Dear Readers, Summer, our beloved summer, has now passed. It seemed surreal with COVID being present. I have not felt a summer go by so quickly. I must admit, I tried to find the good in the bad vibe of COVID, and I did love the way our little Town was transformed by the magic of bistro dining on sidewalks, patios and closed off streets. The community pulled togerther to make Nantucket feel even quainter with umbrella tables and lights strung over dining areas. It was magical at night. Luckily, the weather was accommodating. I now wonder what fall and winter will bring. It was announced that Stroll will happen this year, but it will be different, I’m just not sure how. Nantucket and its residents have survived many adversities in the past. We are a strong community that pulls together. We will make it through this and look back on it, hopefully, soon. How lucky we are to have COVID numbers far lower than the rest of the nation. This little island has always been a “haven” and it is again. Proof of that was evident in the many summer residents who opened their houses earlier and are staying later. I feel they too appreciate the quality of life we have here. Luckily, we do not have crowding on our beaches and the community members care about each other and have done a great job in wearing masks, right from the beginning. Take advantage of the island – go out and walk the many paths on Land Bank and Conservation properties. Enjoy morning walks on the beach, look up and appreciate our clear sky and bath in the beauty of our sunrises and sunsets. I felt I appreciated the beauty of this island before, but somehow, it seemed even more beautiful to me this year. Every time I turned a corner there was beauty to be seen. Before, I took the stately elms, the bunnies on paths, the morning ferry horn at 6:30 am, the church bells at 5pm and seeing the seagulls padding up Main Street in the early morning, for granted. No longer . . . ! I now know why it is so hard to leave Nantucket if you are just visiting. I hope some of what you see on these pages brings back a little of what you remember enjoying while you were here. Sincerely,

Deborah Anderson Publisher

Our waters even offer the chance to target giant bluefin tuna or other offshore species. But then, just like the summer itself, it seems like the fish are gone. The water temperature drops, the fish migrate, and the island’s anglers are left to tell stories—some based in fact, others not so much—until the warmer temperatures return, and we can start it all over again. For those itching to be on the water, so they can wet a line during these cooler months, fear not! There are still plenty of opportunities that abound. It might not offer quite the pulse-racing thrill of seeing the water explode as a hungry bluefish engulfs a topwater plug, but for those who are true anglers, there is still plenty of excitement to be had. For the rod-and-reel set, island ponds can provide endless hours of fishing for various freshwater species.

ON THE EASTERN END OF THE ISLAND, GIBBS POND NEAR ALTAR ROCK is one of the island’s kettle ponds—ponds resulting from the depressions left by retreating glaciers—and is also home to a healthy population of white and yellow perch, as well as smallmouth bass and both

periodically opened to the nearby ocean in order to cleanse the ecosystem. Because of that, it is not uncommon to find landlocked bluefish and striped bass, along with blueback herring, white perch, and other species of fish. Heading out west, anglers have their choice of multiple ponds from which to choose.

HUMMOCK POND STRETCHES

FOR OVER A MILE and provides anglers with the chance to sunfish, crappie, American eels, and smallmouth bass. For those seeking largemouth bass, in addition to smallmouth bass and sunfish, Long Pond is a great spot to hit. MIACOMET POND

IS ANOTHER LOCAL FAVORITE, offering anglers the chance to catch virtually any freshwater species of fish. One of the great things about fishing ponds—especially at this time of year—is that there is usually very limited fishing activity, meaning more often than not you’ve got your pick of spots and the whole pond to yourself. So grab a rod-and-reel and head out to a local pond to test your luck and hone your fishing skills. But what about those days when the fish just aren’t biting? You can only sit on the side of a pond and cast a lure for so long before even the most patient amongst us gets bored. What then?

HUES OF by ANDREW SPENCER

62

T

s we turn the pages on the calendar, it’s impossible not to notice the change in the Nantucket landscape. While some of the colors so familiar to island visitors and residents alike remain, much of Nantucket’s landscape changes as she dresses up for the holiday season. The blues of the sky above us and the water around us are constant, as are the white clouds streaming across the sky and the sand that lines our shores. The beach grass will stay green throughout the winter, and of course, the grey shingles will always be a partof the architectural fabric of the island. The familiar Three Bricks will still stand sentry over Upper Main Street, looking down from their lofty perch on the muted multi-color cobblestones.

63

But outside of those Nantucket constants, there is plenty of changing hues all over the island. Look around and you will be met with an explosion of color that captures the true essence of fall on the Little Grey Lady. Purple beach plums and blue-grey bayberries hang from bushes, and the scarlet red of the cranberries ready for harvest tell us that winter is on its way. Pine trees seem even more vibrantly green at this time of year, surrounded by the brittle brown needles strewn beneath their canopy. The different shades of brown of wild rabbits and deer seem more evident with the dwindling crowds. And birds of many varieties lend their own plumage to the island’s kaleidoscope of colors: the dull greys of the seagulls, the brilliant reds of the cardinals and the pure white of the snowy owls. The local seals, with their coats of mottled browns and blacks, dot the beige sand or lounge atop the algae-covered rocks that make up the jetties, white waves crashing around them. The weather, too, provides its own injection of color to the Nantucket landscape. Our ubiquitous fog is still with us, as are some of the most fantastic sunsets to be found anywhere in the world. On a cold winter’s day, though, the Nantucket sky is dramatically blue, and on more than one occasion that sky clouds over and opens up, covering the island in a coating of ivory-white snow. On Nantucket, the off-season is often referred to as “the quiet season,” a time for regeneration, a time for resting, a time for recharging. There is a sense of hibernation that pervades the island after our summer visitors leave, as locals gather together—though always happy to see visiting faces willing to join them for a bowl of chowder at a local watering hole—to talk about the summer past and to look forward to the coming summer that’s just a few calendar pages away. The off-season is a quieter time, to be sure. And because of the period of inward reflection that accompanies the winter on Nantucket, it’s easy to miss the natural beauty that surrounds us, to witness the changes in our landscape that create such wondrous panoramas. For that reason, we are ever thankful for the collection of amazingly talented artists who call Nantucket home. It is they who are able to convey the true spectacle of the island during this time. It is they who are able to translate the natural beauty that seemingly defies description and recreate it on canvas in all of its natural glory. We have invited several local artists to present their Nantucket works, paintings inspired by the colors of fall and winter on the island. Our little island is truly a summer paradise. But as these artists’ works can attest, it’s a pretty amazing place in the winter, too.

It is crafted with only locally collected items – whelk shells, striped bass scales, and tiny seed scallop shells donated by Tara Riley, Nantucket’s shellfish biologist. O

ne of the real tricks of building any

house is creating a space that, regardless of size or layout, feels like home. It’s easy to say, but can be incredibly hard to actually do. And the homeowners of this Cliff Road summer residence wanted just that. They didn’t want a glamorous showpiece, and they certainly didn’t want something that felt akin to a museum. “And they were adamant that the place feels like a home. The family comes at the beginning of the summer and stays for the whole season,” said Kris Perez of Falkon Builders, the company who constructed the home.

89

The process from start to finish took a little over a year, but Kris and his team succeeded in their pursuit of the family’s goal. “When they walked through the front door for the first time, I was upstairs, but could hear how much they loved it.” Of course, creating such an enclave takes a team of folks working together, and Kris was quick to sing the praises of those involved. “There were a lot of hands that went into building this house,” he said, “and everyone did a tremendous job.” The family was very involved in the process working closely with the architect during the design phase. They meticulously planned the house to fit their personal wants and needs, with every room planned out individually. Case in point, the home office offers a direct sight line through the door out into the adjoining living room and the kitchen beyond. “The father wants to be as involved and connected as he can be with his family when he’s working,” Kris explained of this particular feature. Another specific feature that Kris called out was the masonry work around the fireplace. Like the home’s design itself, the fireplace is the result of meticulous work. “Every stone was cut piece-by-piece,” Kris said. “It’s really a work of art.”

90

The home’s location was ideal for the family, as it is situated near both the beach and Town, with direct access to a bike path. With two high schoolers in the family — whose father is an avid cyclist — that proximity makes for easy travel back-and-forth. The main house features six bedrooms spread across three floors, while the guesthouse has two bedrooms. All bedrooms are well-used, as many close friends come to visit Nantucket as often as they can. Outside, the home features a pool with a nearby pool house that offers the convenience of a place to change clothes, shower, or grab a cold drink. The family spends the off-season in Bermuda, but relishes the time when the calendar pages turn to summer, and they can return to Nantucket. They have owned multiple homes on the island, with the wife’s family being multi-generational summer residents here, so their Nantucket roots run deep. However, their arrival on-island still excites them. And, with the stunning beauty of the home that awaits them, it’s impossible to blame them for that joyous excitement.

He has served on the boards of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the Nantucket New School and the ’Sconset Chapel and as the long-time treasurer of NAREB, the Island's association of real estate brokers. He enjoys golf and the views of Sankaty Lighthouse and the expansive moors. He loves to share his history and knowledge of the Island with clients for rentals and sales.

his well-maintained, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, post and beam frame beach house with attached garage has the benefit of easy access to the beach walk. It offers distant sound views through the abutting greenbelt of undeveloped land forever protected from building. Moreover, the greenbelt abuts the walking trails and paths of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s 275 acres of open space dominated by coastal heathlands, sandplain grasslands, and vegetated wetlands. These habitats provide a sanctuary for an abundance of wildlife. Enjoy all the amenities of the Fishers Landing Association, including two tennis courts, boat storage, and water access from Warren's Landing. Great location with nearby 'Wave" bus shuttle, the Madaket bike path, and Madaket Harbor while only being 4 miles to the town center. Easy access to several beaches, including North Shore beaches, Madaket beaches, Hither Creek, Jackson Point, Madaket Harbor, and the Walter Barrett public pier. 19 Ridge Lane, Fishers Landing $1,650,000
