FASHION! For me, it was Meryl Streep’s character in The Devil Wears Prada that got me paying attention to the way that high-end fashion filters down and affects everyone…. even us, the regular people who don’t walk the runway in New York Fashion Week! It stuck with me how the choices of those elite designers do, in fact, make important artistic statements through their choices in color, texture, material, and overall design. Those choices from the runway and the covers of Vogue do indeed find their way to the clothes we buy and wear on a daily basis. They also translate into our lives by way of interior design. In this issue, we are taking inspiration from Paris, New York, and Milan - showing you how the colors, textures, and materials on the runway can translate to your hallway or home. This season, we have seen bold colors, transparent materials, pattern play and futuristic moments. That kept us at AndersonSomerselle.com busy with ideas, and we are excited to share them with you! So, sit back (perhaps in an Andersonsomerselle.com recommended chair?), and get ready to be taken on a fashion journey!

TRANSPARENT Social media has allowed us unprecedented access to public and private information. This has opened many doors and sounded many alarms -- and now, finally, many people are becoming aware of long-standing inequalities and injustices. The trend is toward transparency: the simple concept that those in power should operate with openness, honesty, and accountability. I’ve found that fashion tends to be a reflection of the times, so I’m not surprised to see a lot of design houses showcasing transparent wear in their spring/summer collection. This season, designers seem to be aligning themselves with society’s call for transparency. Maison Margiela

Armless Juliette by ModShop elevates your basic dining chair. Featuring a fully lucite body and a customizable seat cushion in velvet, this chair is big on style, without being visually heavy.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) - an acrylic glass commonly known as Lucite or Plexiglass - is helping the interior design industry join the call for transparency. This durable, low density, water/ UV-resistant material made its consumer market debut in the early 1930s after being created in the late 1920s. During WWII, acrylic glass was used for a variety of applications ranging from windshields to submarine periscopes. Acrylic glass made its way into the fashion industry in the 1960s, and later was made popular in the interior design world through Kartell’s collection of contemporary home furnishings.

Acrylic had a bit of a come back in 2002 when Philippe Starck introduced the Louis Ghost Chair, produced by Kartell. Sixteen years later, acrylic is one of the hottest trends in interior design. With companies like Modshop (photos 1 and 3) and Jonathan Adler (4) and Alteriors (2) making acrylic a featured element of their designs, it’s clear that this trend is here to stay!

ove over, millennial pink! There’s a new “it-color” in town, and her name is Lavender. Lavender has been making some noise on the runways this spring/summer, and we are living for it. This light shade of purple is soft and sweet, but still manages to stand out from the rest of the pastel family. Being a soothing and calm color, Lavender is perfect to bring some relaxing energy to any room. Give your bedroom a little refresh with a lavender wall, as interior designer Jessie D. Miller did for a recent project (1). Jonathan Adler’s Barcelona table lamp will light up your world with its lavender and gold base (2). We found that this X-ray tulip throw pillow adds the sweetest touch of lavender to your bed, sofa or accent chair (3). The aroma of Voluspa’s French Cade Lavender candle will help transport you a lavender oasis (4).

FRINGE-TASTIC

F

ringe first became a decorative fashion embellishment in the 1920s as part of the flapper look, and since then it has established itself as a fashion mainstay. This dramatically

playful embellishment has reinvented itself more times than Cher! From its native tribal beginnings, to dazzling in the 1920s, to spreading peace and love in the 70s, all the way to rocking with the best of them in 1980s. In 2018 you’ll find fringe hard at work in high-fashion runway looks for today’s biggest designers. From skirts to jackets, fringe’s quest for world domination isn’t limited to just clothes. Fringe is popping up in footwear, accessories, handbags and even home decor ... NOTHING IS SAFE! Below are just a few things we are “fringing” crazy about.

Fashion powerhouses Gucci, Dior, and Balenciaga sprung into fall by modernizing floral prints for their fall collections. Yes, that’s right, floral for fall… groundbreaking! Now, translating floral into the world of interior design can be a bit tricky because it can look dated. But, have no fear, we’re here to help you hone your flower power. 4.

ink and Red has to be one of my favorite color pairings that is trending right now. Once considered a fashion faux pas, the combination of red and pink is very on-trend thanks to design houses like Oscar De La Reta, Hermes and Rebecca De Ravenel. Since these designers embraced their rebellious side by breaking this fashion rule, this bold pairing has been the summer’s new “it couple. We here at AndersonSomerselle.com wanted to show you how this dramatic pairing can translate from the runway to your hallways!

PLAID-A-LICIOUS

Since its creation in the 16th century, plaid has a multitude of functions. Known in Scotland as a “tartan,” each unique pattern can represent a specific Scottish clan or family. Here in the states, plaid has surprised many by becoming one of this season’s hottest trends. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that plaid sweater grandma gave you for Christmas last year is in vogue! This checkered pattern is infiltrating our interiors from table runners to dining chairs to cookie jars.

obby Berk is everybody’s new favorite interior designer, thanks to his recent shot to stardom on the hit Netflix series, Queer Eye. However, you may not know that this Missouri native has been making a name for himself in the design world for quite some time. He has been successful long before his Queer Eye days with his design firm and online store, Bobby Berk Home.

Design should make you happy, its not about what’s on trend or what a design tells you should like. It should be about what you like you.”

As one of the more reserved members of the new “Fab Five,” Bobby may have taken some time to grow on his audience. But once you have seen how his refined style and attentive eye gives new life to all kinds of homes across America, you can’t ignore that he is one of the most talented designers on TV right now. Bobby is quiet and humble throughout much of the series, but speaks frankly and openly about his past in some of the episodes. Bobby started from humble beginnings, growing up in a conservative part of the country .

Responsive Homes Project located in Henderson, NV

His teen years weren’t a walk in the park. Bobby left his parent’s house at age 15. He struggled to find his way in Missouri, sometimes sleeping in his car and crashing on friends’ sofas as he worked double and triple shifts to get by. At the age of 22 with few hundred dollars in his pocket, Bobby packed his bags and headed to the Big Apple (New York City). After going a few months without finding work, Bobby finally landed a job with interior design giant Restoration Hardware. Sadly, Bobby was let go from RH for accurately adjusting his time card after working late to prepare his store for a television event. Ironically, that television event was a shoot for Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the orignal version of the show that would bring him success years later. With his head held high, Bobby moved on to Portico, a highend home furnishing company. With no high school diploma or formal training, he worked his way up to being the Creative Director. After Portico folded in 2006, Berk founded his online venture BobbyBerkHome.com and the rest is history.

Escala Development in Henderson, NV.

Aside from “trending” on social media, Bobby has gotten my attention by hitting trends in the interior design world. Take a look at how he incorporates textures into wall and ceiling coverings to transform a space into something completely new and beautiful. From the showstopping black wall in Axis, NV to the origami inspired wall in Henderson, NV, it’s clear Bobby has an eye (pun intended) for this textured trend in interior design.
