A SEASON OF THE ARTS SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Saturday, September 16 | 7:30 AM – 9:00 PM G. Ross Anderson, Jr. Student Center Dining Commons Registration: $84 + Dinner on your own | Limit: 20 participants (Register early!)

We begin our morning with breakfast and Dr. David Larson sharing a director’s view about the performance, Shakespeare in Love, at 7:30 AM. We board the vans for Oglethorpe University at 9:00 AM to explore the area a bit before attending Shakespeare in Love. After the performance, we will enjoy dinner on our own at an area restaurant.

This is a must-see play!!! Shakespeare in Love is a romantic comedy for the 1990s set in the 1590s. It imaginatively unfolds the witty, sexy and timeless tale behind the creation of the greatest love story ever told. A young Shakespeare is out of cash and ideas when he meets his ideal woman, and she inspires him to write one of his most famous plays. Dr. David Larson, Dean of the South Carolina School of the Arts and Professor of Theatre at Anderson University, has raised the visibility of Anderson arts programs as the South Carolina School of the Arts, with national accreditation from NASM, NASAD, and NAST (pending). On a rotating year basis, David teaches theatre history and directs plays for the AU Playhouse. Later this fall, he will direct the play, Translations, at Anderson University.

Join Deborah McEniry, director, for tea and hear her speak about her love for this piece, the performance, and the cast she’s selected. Deborah shares with us her appreciation for this piece: “While on educational leave in NYC in Fall 2013, a friend of mine who is on Broadway said to me, ‘If you see nothing else while you’re here, you have to see BIG FISH. I’ve seen it twice!’” She goes on to say, “I took his advice and was totally engaged by the power of the story, the phenomenal music and interesting, deep characters. I am looking forward to working on this beautiful piece of art, which tells the delicate story of a father/ son relationship that is tormented by the father’s desire to impress his son by telling stories. “I was only able to see it once in NYC, but when I saw it, I fell in love with it and knew that I wanted my students to experience the joy of telling the story on Henderson stage.” Dr. Deborah McEniry recently completed her tenth year as Professor and Chair of Theatre Arts at Anderson University in South Carolina.

She received her master’s degree in Vocal Performance/Musical Theatre from NYU’s Steinhardt School and her Ph.D. in Educational Theatre (Teaching Theatre in Colleges and Universities) from New York University. Her bachelor’s degree is in Music Education/Voice Principal from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey.

Deborah is a member of Actors Equity, SAG-AFTRA and the Society of Choreographers and Directors.

TRANSLATIONS,

Dr. David Larson and Dr. Jim Haughey partner again for an introduction and preshow discussions to prepare us to sit back and enjoy the performance! Then, we join the Anderson University cast and Director David Larson as they perform, Translations, a three-act play set in the tumultuous nineteenth century country of Ireland. The action takes place in a hedge-school where students are faced with the invasion of English-speaking soldiers. One of these soldiers falls in love with an Irish girl and then mysteriously goes missing. The son of the master of the hedge-school is forced to go into hiding to keep from being condemned for the crime, although he is not responsible for the soldier’s disappearance. Translations is a play about love, tradition, and the circumstances that force the break with these traditions. Dr. David Larson is the Dean of the South Carolina School of the Arts and Professor of Theatre at Anderson University. David has carried many roles at AU; all of them in the area of arts administration. He administered Centre Stage at Anderson College, led the development and planning for the Rainey Fine Arts Center, served as the founding director of the Anderson Senior Follies, and supervised the four-year transition for Art, Music and Theatre. In more recent years, David has raised the visibility of Anderson arts programs as the South Carolina School of the Arts, with national accreditation from NASM, NASAD, and NAST (pending). On a rotating year basis, David teaches theatre history and directs plays for the AU Playhouse. He is a member of Christ Church, EPC. Dr. Jim Haughey teaches English literature at Anderson University. He has published a book and a number of essays on 20th century Irish writers. Translations takes place in County Donegal where Jim spent many childhood summer holidays in the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht area. His favorite quotation from the play sums up his life: “Confusion is not an ignoble condition.”

TASTE OF ANDERSON COCOBON CHOCOLATIER: CHOCOLATE MAKING AND TASTINGS Monday, September 11, 18, 25 | 3:00 – 4:30 PM | Registration: $40 Limit: 10 participants (Register early!)

Join us downtown Anderson at 111 North Main Street to enjoy the study of chocolate and tastings!

The Nature of Chocolate: In our first session, we will learn about the history and origins of chocolate, where it comes from, how it’s processed, some of its health benefits and why it is so popular. The class includes sampling of different styles of chocolate from different locations. Find out for yourself what makes chocolate so good.

The Art of the Truffle: For session two, we learn that there are truffles, and there are truffles. CocoBon Chocolatier has perfected the truffle in the European style but made for the American palate. Learn some of our secrets and how others make truffles as well. Sample some of our pieces and watch us work.

Chocolate Pairing: Even though chocolate is great by itself, it pairs well with many different foods and drinks. We’ll sample a variety of different foods and beverages with fine chocolate and walk you through the process in our concluding class. Owner and chocolatier David Saidat got his start in chocolate when his favorite confectioner went out of business in 2002. Thinking he could never get those special flavors again, he set out to duplicate his favorites, with CocoBon Chocolatier being the result. Now joining him is his son Alec who loves the chocolate business too, creating flavor profiles of his own and adding his specialties to the lineup.

ART FURTHER EXPLORATIONS IN DRAWING Wednesday, September 27, October 4, 11, 18 | 4:30 – 6:30 PM Boulevard Baptist Church | Registration: $30 | Limit: 10 participants (Register early!)

This class builds on our previous drawing classes; however, others are welcome to join the group. We begin with an introduction/review of basic line work and depicting dimension through shading. We will move on to composition, awareness of negative space, use of color and depicting texture. Further work in awareness of proportion, use of motion in composition, creating depth, and use of linear perspective will be included as time allows. Ms. Jane List has been an art educator for over 30 years in NJ, FL, and NH. She has taught all age levels: pre-school, elementary, middle/high school, college and adults. She holds a BA in Visual Arts Education and an M ED. in Arts Integrated Curriculum. After retiring to SC, Jane discovered she missed teaching.

Fortunately for us, she also discovered Lifelong Learning.

DEVELOPING SIMPLE BACKGROUNDS FOR WATERCOLOR Wednesday, October 25 | 4:30 – 6:30 PM |Boulevard Baptist Church Registration: $20 | Limit: 10 participants (Register early!)

This is a two-hour, one-session class. We will explore techniques for creating a variety of paper treatments using watercolors. These techniques can be combined with watercolor subject matter or other materials to enhance your finished work. Materials will be provided and shared by the class. HISTORY GLIMPSES OF LIFE IN 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH COLONIES Tuesday, September 5, 12, 19, 26 | 3:00 – 4:30 PM Vandiver Hall Room 134 | Registration: $20 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available What happened in the English colonies between Jamestown (1607) and Plymouth (1620) and the American Revolution (1776)? For many Americans this period is a large blank. This course will look at some highlights in the first half of the 18th century focusing on the Great Awakening and growing Americanization of the colonists. We will feature some of the outstanding personalities of the time including Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. Dr. Bonnie S. Ledbetter is a graduate of Ohio State, Western Reserve, and Tulane, where she received her Ph.D. in American History. She served on the faculty at Texas A&M University and at Clemson.

PRESIDENTIAL COUPLES: PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LIVES OF FOUR U.S. PRESIDENTS AND FIRST LADIES Tuesday, October 3, 10, 17, 24 | 4:00 – 5:30 PM Vandiver Hall Room 134 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available Registration: $20 Join us as four instructors lead us through discussing the legacies of four presidential couples this fall. Along with the impact of the four presidents, the role of the First Lady in the Twentieth Century was expanded by each of these individuals in unique ways. Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy are much better known, but each of these First Ladies further advanced the opportunities for a presidential spouse to have a significant impact during his time in office. The presidential couples to be featured this fall include the following: Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt Wilson (1913-1921), Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover (1929-1933), Franklin D. and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1933-1945), and John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (1961-1963). For spring 2018, LLI will continue this series in a second course for presidential couples. Mr. Mike Kay earned a Bachelor’s in Accounting from Drexel University with a minor in Communication. His interest in history was sparked by his father, who kept the house filled with books and magazines on history.

His dad also wrote several books, monographs and articles about Post Office history. Dr. Joyce Wood is well known for her knowledge, for her ability to engage the participants in the discussion, and was instrumental in locating and archiving many historical items as part of the preparation of the Centennial History for Anderson University 2010-2011. Mrs. Kathryn Smith is a writer and editor whose work has appeared in print and on-line media for more than 40 years. The long-time book columnist for the Anderson Independent-Mail, she is the author of The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand, FDR and the Untold Story of the Partnership that Defined a Presidency (Touchstone). Copies of the book in hardback ($28) and paperback ($17) will be available for cash or check at her lecture. Kathryn lives in Anderson with her husband Leo. Mrs. Pat Mulligan retired as a history professor at AU in 1998, worked in Russia and Turkey 12 years with resident ex-pats, and retired again in October 2014.

We’ll explore his first novel, Appointment in Samarra, considered one of the great novels of small town American life. Instructor Marybeth Evans, former Community Services Coordinator for the Anderson County Library System, coordinated a year-long retrospective of O’Hara’s life and worked for public radio in 1995. She’ll use the paperback 2013 Penguin Books Deluxe Edition of the novel in the class.

BEING EMMA: A STUDY OF CHARACTER IN JANE AUSTEN’S EMMA Thursday, November 2, 9, 16, 30 | 4:00 – 5:30 PM Vandiver Hall 202 | Registration: $20 | Teacher Recertification Credit Available Emma Woodhouse possesses many of the desirable attributes of a young woman in Regency England: money, position, beauty, personality, intelligence. She also has few responsibilities and quite a bit of time to fill each day. So, she takes on projects, playing matchmaker and doing makeovers on friends. What she comes to realize, though, is that her greatest project is herself, and self-examination results in changes she never anticipated. Emma, Jane Austen’s fourth novel, demonstrates one of Austen’s greatest skills as an author, that of creating complex characters who are themselves the focus of a study in character. Participants are asked to read Chapters 1 through 12 before the first class meeting. Dr. Karen Zagrodnik is a lecturer in English at Anderson University and has taught classes at the college level on Jane Austen. Her area of specialty is British literature of the eighteenth century. She considers herself both a Janeite and an Austenite.

November 13: When Henry first saw the title “Bernice Bobs Her Hair,” he just KNEW this was going to be boring. He was totally surprised and delighted to be wrong. This F. Scott Fitzgerald story is great fun.

Mr. Henry Spann was a public high school English teacher for over a quarter of a century, after which he was an English instructor at Anderson University for ten years. During those years, he had three NEH fellowships, was an NEH master teacher one summer, and wrote two articles on Eudora Welty and Katherine Anne Porter. For twenty years he was an AP English Literature Exam reader and table leader.

Having graded more than enough essays, he has been fully retired since 2011.

November 20: Bob selected a couple of mysteries: “The Red-Headed League” and “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.” This course will investigate literature’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Participants will explore the world of Holmes’ creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, examine the leading characters of his stories, and identify the ingredients of a successful mystery. Class members are invited to bring their curiosity and attention to details; magnifying glass, pipe, cane, and deerstalker hat are optional. Dr. Bob Hanley serves as Vice Provost for Academic Advising, Chairperson of the English Department, and Professor of English at AU. He loves both poetry and fiction and includes Dickinson, Frost, Eliot, Rash, Conroy, and Wolfe in his list of favorite authors.

November 27: Jim Haughey has chosen a comic tale, Frank O’Connor’s “The Drunkard,” about a young Irish boy who goes to the pub with his father and drinks his father’s beer while his father is distracted. The father then has to return home with the drunken son to face the wrath of his wife. Dr. Jim Haughey teaches Shakespeare and 20th century British literature. His most recent publication was an essay on Irish war poets which appeared in The Oxford Handbook of 20th Century Irish Poetry (2012). He received the 2013 Michael Boles Excellence in Teaching Award at Anderson University.

December 4: “Sweat” by Zora Neil Hurston is a story rich in contrasts, pathos, victory, and humor--albeit dark somewhat. It is one of the best examples of the writing that embodied the aims of the Harlem Renaissance movement. Dr. Nancye McClure received her BA from Erskine, her MA from USC, and her Ph.D. in literature in 2001. She taught at Tennessee Technological University, University of Mississippi, and at Missouri State University. She was a presenter and panelist at American Literature Association and South Central Modern Languages Association conferences.

From Egypt, we will examine a people whose early world saw their leader, the Pharaoh, as a deity and where those who died had their afterlife determined by the weight of a feather. After a sampling of Egyptian myth, we will examine Greek mythology, which holds a unique place in the development of Western Civilization. Even today, the names of the gods who populated their world, as well as many of the myths themselves, are found in the names of our cities and streets, as well as the names of our planets, stars, and moons. As we trace their influence on the Western world, we will learn that Greek mythology is very much all around us. Dr. Bob Hanley earned his BA and MA in English from Clemson University. Ms. Laurie J. Murray teaches creative nonfiction, techniques of persuasive writing, and freshman composition at Anderson University as a lecturer of English. Murray’s essay “Maidenhair,” published in the Winter 2015/2016 issue of The Iowa Review, won the runner-up slot for the 2015 Iowa Review Award in the genre of nonfiction. We depart Anderson University by 8:15 for the State House tour with Ms. Robin Mosely. Remember to wear your comfortable shoes as we will do some walking. After visiting the State House building, we will enjoy lunch on our own. After lunch, we visit the Planetarium, Observatory, and 4D Theater. The Planetarium features different shows throughout the year. Tom Falvey, director of education for the Museum states, “Our planetarium’s amazing projection system and the interactive NASA gallery will literally bring science and outer space to life. What was once incomprehensible to many will become comprehensible.”

In the Observatory, the Clark telescope will be available for solar viewing during the day. The 4D Theater presents movies that showcase museum exhibits for all ages. During our museum visit, Mr. Paul Matheny, curator of art and collections, will take us on a backstage Museum tour. Between our programs, let’s take a break and enjoy a snack and a bit of shopping in the Cotton Mill Exchange.

Ms. Robin Moseley retired from the SC Senate after almost 20 years of service. With a view of the State House from her Gressette Senate Office Building window and many visits to the Senate Chamber, her appreciation for the architecture, beauty, and history of the building grew. Robin is currently an Interpretive Guide for Historic Columbia Foundation. Mr. Paul Matheny, Director of Collections, received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Winthrop University and his Master of Arts in Arts Administration. While attending Winthrop University he was the Assistant City Art Coordinator at the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, responsible for exhibiting local artists in citywide public art spaces including City Hall Galleries. Later, he accepted the position of Associate Curator of Art at the Museum of York County until 2001, when he accepted the position of Curator of Art at the South Carolina State Museum. He has served as the Chief Curator of Art (2002-2014), Chief Curator of Collections (2014-2015) and Director of Collections (2016) for the SC State Museum. During this time, Matheny has completed over 30 major art exhibitions, 7 major publications and has collaborated on documentaries with SCETV. Since 2001, he has exhibited the work of over 800 artists in the State Museum’s Lipscomb Art Gallery.

Popular in the late 1800’s, it is said that the center square of a log cabin quilt block represents the hearth of a log cabin and is the ‘heart’ of the home. AARP DRIVER’S COURSE: THE SMART DRIVER CLASS Monday, August 28, 4:00 – 8:00 PM | Vandiver Hall, Room 134 Registration: $15 for AARP members (AARP Membership card required); $20 for nonAARP members The Smart Driver Class (SDC) is an AARP driver four-hour refresher course designed specifically for seniors, age fifty and over. In a classroom setting, the course will guide the participants through six units of driver safety video segments intended to refresh and upgrade your current safe driving skills. It includes elements to help you minimize crash risks. The class is an important and useful review of the correct topics all drivers should cover relative to driving safely on the road.

It presents changes that have occurred over the years in the driver, the vehicle, and the driving environment that affect driving safety.

There is not a behind-the-wheel test or final exam run-through. The state of South Carolina law mandates that SC auto insurance carriers offer a reduction in auto premiums for class participants finalizing the course and being awarded a completion certificate. Mr. John Brown is a native New Yorker who moved to Anderson, SC, in 2000. He is a retired business manager, real estate broker and property manager.

He volunteers in several capacities in AARP state and local activities and has served as an AARP Driver Safety Instructor for fourteen years.

Mr. Doug Norwine, an accomplished saxophone player, graduated from Bowling Green University in Ohio with a Bachelor of Music degree and received a Masters Equivalent in Performance from Berkley College of Music in Boston, where he taught prior to moving to Los Angeles. Doug has received 12 Gold and Platinum records from the RIAA for his work as a musician in LA, has been featured on numerous television shows, and has also been a staff musician for major motion-picture companies. He has toured with and/or been a soloist on numerous recordings. Mrs. Kelley Whitlock Norwine, a former Miss Liberty, started playing the piano and singing at age three. She has performed throughout Europe and the United States, recorded vocals on numerous albums, sung with Steve March Torme, and performed back-up for Barry Manilow. Doug and Kelley are employed at Anderson University where Kelley is the Director of External Relations for the SC School of the Arts, and Doug directs the jazz band and teaches. They are Co-Musical Directors for AUthenticity, the school’s scholarshipped touring band.

Tuesday, October 3, 10, 17, 24 | 6:00 – 7:00 PM Rainey Fine Arts Center, Gallant Gallery | Registration: $20 In 1999, George Harrison had this to say about the ukulele: “Everybody should have and play a ‘UKE.’ It’s so simple to carry with you, and it is one instrument you can’t play and not laugh!” This class is a continuation of Beginning Ukulele using Mel Bay’s book, Fun with the Ukulele. In it, we will expand our use of the basic chord progressions in the keys of C and G and add a few more chords to our repertoire. We’ll also learn more about different strumming rhythms to add variety to our playing. Pre-requisite for the class is experience in playing in the keys of C and G on the ukulele or guitar. Come and find the “joy of uke” with the magical ukulele! Please include the type of ukulele you have: standard (C tuning) or Baritone (G tuning) when registering.

Ms. Linda McMakin is an old hippy folk singer who has been a singer/ song writer for most of her adult life. She picked up the guitar in the early ‘60’s when the Kingston Trio showed up and didn’t put it down until about four years ago when she inherited her dad’s Baritone ukulele. Since then, she’s been a member of three different upstate ukulele bands, teaches intermediate and advanced ukulele classes, and likes nothing better than sharing the “joy of uke” with others.

You will be entertained through these contrasting genres. Mr. Leonard Mansfield Johnson, a church musician and director (minister of music), also provides instrumental and vocal music for pageants, fashion shows, weddings and more. He is a natural baritone, but is able to utilize his falsetto to create different and unique vocal styles and sounds. Leonard earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from Clark Atlanta University and has worked within the music arena including The Project MAD (Music, Art and Drama); organizing the Project MAD Community Choir (later renamed “the Mansfield Ensemble”); the Phillis Wheatley Repertory Theatre of Greenville; and directing the Anderson University Ensemble (Gospel Choir) for 32 years. For the past 37 years, he’s also been employed as Minister of Music at Maple Creek Baptist Church in Greer, SC.

FOLLOWING THE KINGDOM OF GOD THROUGH THE SCRIPTURES Monday, November 6, 13, 20, 27 |2:30 – 4:00 PM Vandiver Hall Room 205 | Registration: $20 The course will explore the Kingdom of God through the pages of our sacred scripture. We will begin by looking at the Old Testament concept of a united Israel under King David. Then, we will move through the historical tragedy of a broken and divided Kingdom expressed in the prophetic books. We will witness the incarnation of God’s Kingdom through the gospels in the birth, teachings, miracles, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Then we will discuss the consummation of the Kingdom with a New Heaven and New Earth. Mr. Greg Allgood currently serves as Instructor of Christian Studies and Associate Director of Campus Worship at Anderson University. Prior to joining the full-time faculty, Greg was the Director of Campus Ministries.

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY-EVERYBODY LOVES A GOOD STORY: KINGDOM PARABLES FOR MEN Monday, September 11, 18, 25, and October 2 | 6:00 – 7:00 PM Vandiver Hall Room 201 | Registration: $20 Jesus knew how to communicate with people… all kinds of people from rich to poor, well-educated and uneducated, the Godly and the Godless. Mrs. Becky Walker is the Associate Campus Minister for Women at Anderson University. Becky seeks to passionately reach out to women to assist them in finding their passion, potential and purpose for ministry. Becky has served as a missionary for the International Mission Board and worked in the Gaza Strip.

She served as a church planter among the deaf through the North American Mission Board. She has worked with several Universities as well as secular agencies. She values relationships and seeks to help women through discipleship and mentoring. She attended Gardner Webb University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

CODE OF CONDUCT The Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University is an organization of knowledgeable and interested adults. To participate in LLI classes and events, respect for one another is imperative. All participants must treat different viewpoints respectfully. Intimidating comments will not be tolerated. Violations may lead to loss of privileges to participate in the LLI program. The LLI director, board, advisory council, and class monitors are responsible for ensuring the Code of Conduct is being followed in all LLI programs.

REFUND POLICY To withdraw from a LLI $20 course, notify the LLI Office in writing by email or by mail to be received at least two days prior to the course beginning to receive full credit. To withdraw from a course that includes travel and/ or food, the written request must be received at least ten (10) business days prior to the beginning of the course to receive any credit. In some instances, no refunds or credits are given when travel and food are included because nonrefundable tickets and meals may be paid in advance. It is best to find someone who will take your place. A credit is not a refund but credit toward $20 LLI courses.

One goal of the LLI program is to take photographs of our course participants for publicity. If you wish not to be publicized in our catalogs, on our website, or on our Facebook page, please remove yourself from the area when pictures are being taken.

THE TRAVEL CLUB of Anderson Even though separate organizations, the Travel Club functions under the umbrella of the Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University. If travel is an interest for you, join the Travel Club that meets on the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 pm at the Anderson County Library. Annual club dues are $10.00; new members may join on meeting dates. The fall Travel Club meeting dates are as follows: September 7, October 5, November 2, and December 7. Members receive monthly email reminders for each meeting and quarterly mailed reminders in September, December, and March. Programs focus on travels and topics of interest, and travel agencies present upcoming trips at each meeting.
