lOReTTa HOllOWay, officially proclaimed in 2011 as “South Carolina’s First Lady of Song,” has been a familiar face in Las vegas and Atlantic City, where she opened for headliners Bill Cosby, Jay Leno, Whoopi Goldberg, Don Rickles, Rich Little, Gary Shandling and Jerry Lewis. Her travels abroad have taken Holloway to Australia where she was presented to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in a Royal Command Performance.

Holloway is no stranger to the theatrical stage, having starred in the New York off-Broadway production of “Mama I Want To Sing II,” Loretta’s movie credits include, Pure Country, with George Strait, and Elvis and Me. She also sang the sound track for the United Artist movie release of “Black Jack.” Watch for Holloway’s cameo appearance in the upcoming movie “Clipped Wing’s, They Do Fly” written and produced by William Michael Barbee. The movie deals with understanding and dispelling the stigmas of multiple personalities and schizophrenia and is slated for an early 2015 release. www.lorettaHolloway.com DOUG nORWIne, an accomplished saxophone player, has received 12 Gold and Platinum records from RIAA for his work as a musician in LA. A busy studio musician in Los Angeles for twenty-eight years, Norwine has been featured on such television shows as Roseanne, Full House, Seinfeld, Mad About You, Rugrats, Suddenly Susan, The Tonight Show, Family Ties, Will and Grace, West Wing, General Hospital, Frasier, and many more. Doug has also been a staff musician for major motion-picture companies including Touchstone, Universal, Warner Bros, Fox, Paramount, and Sony. Doug’s movie credits include JFK, True Lies, Ten Things I Hate About You and Fright Night. In addition to his studio work, Doug has performed and toured with many famous artists such as Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Bette Midler, Tony Bennett and Harry Connick, Jr., Melissa Manchester, Chaka Khan and Frankie valli.

In addition to performing and working in pop culture, Doug is currently directing the jazz band and teaching Jazz Studies, Improvisation, and Theory at Anderson University. He is Co-Musical Director for AUthenticity, Anderson University’s premier touring group, and is the Director of The Johnny Mann School of Commercial Music for the SC School of the Arts. www.dougandkelleynorwine.com Kelley nORWIne began playing the piano when she was three years old and has loved music ever since. Performing throughout the US and Europe, with significant time spent in Los Angeles and Dallas, she has recorded vocals on numerous albums, performed back-up for Barry Manilow, and has worked extensively with saxophonist husband, Doug Norwine. She has been a Minister of Music, Worship Leader, or Musical Director in churches in South Carolina, Los Angeles, and Dallas for 25 years.

She writes music, sings, and plays the piano and can be seen performing around the upstate. She holds a Master’s degree in Ministry and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Music. She joined Anderson University in 2011 as Graduate and Adult Studies Coordinator, and is Co-Musical Director for AUthenticity. Mission The Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University (LLI) is an organization which presents both academic and leisure activities to interest and inform its members. Through opportunities to share learning and to socialize in a school environment without grades or tests, LLU supports mature learners in their quest for knowledge and seeks programs to interest those in our community. LLI maintains a positive, well-rounded partnership with Anderson University.

Membership Interested adults of all ages and educational backgrounds may join LLI by paying $30 annual membership fee. Annual membership is January - December or August - July. Take time to join LLI today and begin enjoying all the benefits of being a member.

The Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University Board requests persons who have strong interests in areas to submit to the director a Course Proposal (found on our website). The LLI programs are determined for the most part by members’ suggestions, so take time to submit a proposal today! Our volunteer presenters represent a host of topics, including music, history, the arts, government, nature, religion, business, entertainment, physical activities, and hobbies. As they share their passion for these topics, they encourage dialogue and opportunities for participants to discuss ideas and build friendships.

Monday, October 19 | 6 – 9 pm Pracht Seminar Room, AU Thrift Library. Registration $35 Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.

Attendees learn about all aspects of financial planning. Topics include personal budgeting, investing, retirement planning, insurance, Social Security/Medicare, and estate planning. Attendees get a workbook to guide them and help them plan the future. After the course, all attendees may receive a complimentary, personalized financial analysis with the instructor, a Certified Financial Planner. This allows attendees to begin implementing what they learned in the course on an individual basis and adds value that they can carry forward with them.. Mr. Spencer Metcalf, a South Carolina native, comes from a family of financial advisors. He began his career in the financial planning and investment management business in 2006. Previously, he received a BS from USC Upstate and earned an MBA, with a concentration in Finance, through Strayer University. In 2011 he received a Certificate in Financial Planning from Florida State University and not long after received his CFP® certification from the CFP Board.

The Travel Club functions under the umbrella of the Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University. If travel is a learning experience for you, join the Travel Club that meets on the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 pm at the Anderson County Library.

Annual club dues are $10.00, and new members may join at any time and on meeting dates. The fall Travel Club meeting dates are as follows: Sept. 3, Oct. 1, Nov. 5, and Dec. 3. Members receive postal reminders before each meeting. Programs focus on travels and topics of interest. In addition, travel agencies present upcoming opportunities at each meeting.

Anderson School Districts Anderson School Districts have approved a number of the LLI courses for teacher recertification. In order to enroll in these courses, teachers must first become members of LLI ($30). Most courses are $20. Courses for recertification hours are noted in the course listings and are offered at times convenient for teachers.

After participating in district-approved courses, teachers receive a certificate for credit hours earned. (Teachers may choose to contact their district office before enrolling.)

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY LLI follows the Anderson University inclement weather policy. When AU is closed due to inclement weather, all LLI classes are canceled and may be rescheduled by the instructor and participants.

CAMPUS PARKING and Safety Our Campus Safety Office requires that LLI members display a parking permit on their rearview mirror while on campus. After registering, a campus map, parking permit,registration confirmation, and membership card will be mailed to you. LLI members should park in white spaces reserved for Anderson University students.

All campus buildings are smoke free.

Registration To register for courses, one must become a member by joining LLI for $30. Interested persons may join LLI and enroll in courses in a number of ways.

1. Complete the membership and registration form in the catalog.

Return it with a check made out to Anderson University or complete the credit card information and mail it to the address on the form.

2. Call the Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University Office and register with a credit card (864-231-5617).

FREE sessions for LLI annual members Therapy Dogs

Friday, September 11 | 10:00 am – 11:15 am; lunch 11:15 am - 12:00 pm Pracht Seminar Room, AU Thrift Library SCDogs is an all-volunteer group who take their registered therapy dogs to many different facilities in the Anderson/Clemson/Easley area. Our dogs undergo strict evaluations which include both obedience, disposition and tolerance tests. We will introduce you to several of our dogs, do a mock test and also show you various ways that we interact with clients. It is incredible to see the reaction of people of all ages! Ms. Trish Carter has been doing pet therapy work for almost thirty years. As a retired nurse and dog lover this fit right into her life. She has been a team Leader in SCDogs for fifteen years and is very involved in all aspects of the organization. Ms. Ellen Pohl retired from teaching English at Westside High School in Anderson in 2011. After retiring from Westside, she joined SC Dogs Therapy Group because she saw this as an opportunity to combine her love of dogs and her interest in staying active in the community. Her dog, Ollie, visits a variety of places with SC Dogs and finds this work to be very rewarding.

It Starts With a Conversation – Make Your Wishes Known

Friday, October 23 | 10:15 am – 12:00 pm Chapman Mutli-Media Room , AU Thrift Library Most people have at least heard of Advanced Directives, Living Wills, or Healthcare Power of Attorneys, but advanced healthcare planning is about so much more than just filling out paperwork and putting it away in a safe place. Advanced healthcare planning involves thinking ahead of time about what you want to have happen at the end of life and making sure that your loved ones know what your wishes are. With this course, participants will learn about what Advance Directives are, why they are important, and how to effectively communicate end of life wishes with family members and friends. Ms. Kelly Culpepper graduated Clemson University in nursing. She worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Saint Francis Hospital and has been at Hospice of the Upstate for a year. She is the Clinical Education Liaison at Hospice of the Upstate. Ms. Pam Leitner, a native of SC, worked with Hospice of the Upstate for 22 years. She has a BS in psychology from the USC and a Masters of Science in Thanatology from Breyer State University.

She is a certified as a grief counselor and recognized as a Fellow in Thanatology by The Association on Death Education Counseling.

While progressing through life, one might find herself/himself at the proverbial fork in the road... such as the shape of a wishbone. Life tends to branch off into two distinct and diverse lifestyles. When the wishbone snaps, knowing which side you are left holding may be a Divine treasure!

Thursday, October 1 Day Trip to Old Washington, Georgia Let’s drive the pretty roads to Washington, Georgia – one of the state’s most important antebellum “upcountry towns.”

Washington was the “Edgefield of Georgia” (that spoken by a South Carolinian) in the mid-19th century . . . and we’ll explore local stories about Alexander H. Stephens and Robert Toombs, two of the antebellum South’s most powerful men.

This is an overview of American Sign Language (ASL), its basic vocabulary, structure, syntax and grammar. Focus will be on mastering the basics of finger-spelling, numbers, colors, facial grammar and sentence structure; participants will also learn conversational/cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation in ASL, with deaf/hard-of hearing native users of the language. At age 8, he received his first guitar and rushed home to lunch and immediately after school every day to practice the guitar. At age 13, he was playing with bands. He played in 17 area bands and formed 13 of these bands. Had Butch and his band accepted the invitation to sign a record contract, we would have known him from attending his concerts. He graduated Penn State University and moved with his family from Corning, NY, to SC in 1981 to work for BASF until his retirement.

RELIGION The Apostle Paul: His Life, Letters, and Legacy

We’ll begin our study by looking at the person who went from being an avid persecutor of Christians to becoming one of the key figures in the establishment of the Church’s foundational beliefs. general and spend extra time in his letter to the early Roman Christians. We’ll conclude with his impact then and now on the Christian Church.

Dr. Jim Motes is Associate Professor of Christian Studies at Anderson University. He brings fourteen years of teaching experience at AU and twenty years’ experience serving churches in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina to the classroom. Dr. Motes has a strong emphasis on discipleship in the Christian faith in the various courses he teaches.

Over four weeks the vital parts and functions of a variety of cameras will be explored for participants to learn the essential uses of capturing that picture that is worth a million words.

At the conclusion of the course, participants will enter their “best” photo in the Lifelong learning Institute’s Photography Show Exhibit. Lessons begin with an exhibit of photography by the instructor and an explanation of how the pictures

were captured. Sessions will also focus on the capabilities of the camera to capture different styles of pictures such as portraits, landscape, or video. Then, participants will take pictures, bring them to class, and discuss techniques to improve on the pictures. Before the final class, participants will select one picture to enter into a photography contest to be judged and set up in a “LLI Photography Exhibit.”

Norma Hughes-Smith explains how photography is about capturing pictures of People, Places, Faces and Beyond. She worked as a feature writer and photographer for the NewsChronicle while double majoring in elementary education and journalism at Anderson University. After retiring from teaching, she returned to pictures and writing articles for the newspaper, Anderson Magazine.

Nature What’s Up There Tonight?

Dr. Jonathan Jennings has been exploring the night sky for over 50 years. “The science of Astronomy may be enjoyed without expensive equipment,” says Dr. Jennings, “and the stars are a free show for everyone’s enjoyment and amazement.” The three-fold purposes are as follows: (1) to present background information about the Earth’s movements relative to the Moon, the Sun, and the Stars, (2) to help the participants explore how and where to observe objects that appear in the night sky by participating in outside viewing sessions (particularly the Moon and planets), and (3) to identify free online and print astronomy resources. We see different portions of the night sky each night, but the constellations appear unchanging over the years. Classroom presentations and nighttime viewing sessions will help participants understand better the dynamic motions of the planet on which we live.

Dr. Jonathan Jennings is a retired educator from Anderson School District Five. He taught science for 13 years and served as a school administrator for 24 years. He holds degrees from Clemson University (BS), Furman University (MA), and SC State University (Ed D). He has served as an Adjunct Science Instructor at Anderson University since 2011.

Recognizing Local Birds: Their Sounds, Homes, and Habitats

An introduction to the identification, life history, ecology and importance to humans of birds commonly observed in Anderson County, SC. Approximately twenty birds will be highlighted. Techniques for observation of birds by sight and sound will be presented. Field observations of birds in their native habitat in the Anderson University wetland and upland will be the culmination of the course. How to become involved in “citizen science” through birding will be emphasized. Binoculars required.

Drs. Kozel and Norris are Professor and Associate Professor, respectively, of Biology at Anderson University. Dr. Norris is long-time participant in the SC Christmas Bird count and other organized birding activities.

World War II: Part I—The European Theater

Want to know more about the history of the towns and cities of Anderson County? Come join us as historians and residents of our towns guide us on a journey around the county without leaving the classroom. Thomas Addison is an art teacher at Palmetto Middle School. Reared in Greenville, he is employed in the Williamston community of his parents’ birth and home for generations on both sides of his family. Carol Burdette, a native of Pendleton, served on the Pendleton Town Council as the town’s first female mayor. Philip Cheney will present the story of Anderson.

He has served as a member of the Anderson City Council and as president of the Anderson County Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society. Alison Ashley Darby is an author, educator, and community volunteer and has written two books on the history of Belton. She will tell stories of the entrepreneurs and the town’s eccentric characters, and present fascinating facts of another age and time. Fredda Gilmer will present our session on Honea Path. Elaine Hunt has edited and written three books about Pelzer and has more on her schedule. Donald Roper is a local textile historian and a lifelong resident of Piedmont. He writes under the pen name, “Saluda Sam,” and has been honored with several awards. Tim Taylor will present the town of Iva and serves as their Town Clerk.

The World Plunges into the Abyss: This session will review a general outline of the war and the causes and opening events.

Hearing about WWII from the perspectives of a German citizen and from a United States citizen will remind us of the challenges from both sides.

The Home Front: A personal perspective from the letters of Gertrude Hardesty, 1942-45. This session follows the story of a young North Carolina woman against the backdrop of World War II, which interrupted and redirected her life and separated her from people she loved as it did for millions of others, too.

The German Perspective: The war from a German perspective, by a native-born German, covers the period from January 1943 (loss of Stalingrad) to June 1948 (introduction of the Deutsche Mark and the Marshall plan).

Victory-- Hot War to Cold War: The long years of warfare, suffering and loss came to an end in 1945 but also sadly launched another, different, type of war that lasted for the next fifty years, the Cold War. Dr. John Lassiter, Professor of History at Anderson University, has taught at Anderson University since 1984.

He received his Ph.D. in History from UNC-Chapel Hill, with specialization in early modern England. His connection to WW2 is his parents, now deceased: his mother worked for a contractor in construction of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, NC, in 1941-42; his father served in US Navy (naval intelligence) stationed at Charleston and Savannah and was sent to Okinawa and Kume Shima in 1945.

Mr. Tony Mollgaard was born in Northern Germany in Bredstedt. He learned to speak English and French with his other courses and followed with a three-year apprenticeship as an electrician. Shortly after completing the apprenticeship, Tony immigrated to the USA and began work on production lines. In 1960 he started a four-year study at MilwaukeeSchool-of-Engineering in electrical engineering, which culminated in a BSEE Degree in 1964. In 1974 Tony joined Michelin North-America in their central engineering group and was involved in various aspects automation equipment for the rubber and tire process. He retired from Michelin and is volunteering, traveling, writing, and involved in various other activities.

Dr. Joyce Wood received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Winthrop University and her Ph.D. in History from the University of S.C. Though her main scholarly interest has been in subjects related to World War I, she grew up in a home where her parents had been deeply affected by the Depression and WW II. Her father served in the Army-Air Force in WWII, and her mother spent a portion of the war working in an aircraft plant in Texas that built B-24 bombers.

Quilting Bee

Monday, October 12, 19, 26, and November 2 4:30 – 6:00 pm | Boulevard Baptist Church Registration: $20 Need a way to use up those scraps of cotton fabric from other sewing projects? In these sessions quilters will learn to make a crazy patch square and a square using strip paper piecing.

Once you know how to make these squares, you can work on your own to make a quilt using the pattern you like best.

The other one can be made into a pillow top. In addition, we will learn to make a jelly roll quilt either using scraps or a purchased jelly roll.

Mrs. Brenda Gray learned to quilt from a lady in the community and has a passion for quilting gleaned from her grandmother. Mrs. Betsey Matheny began quilting when she took a class on making a sampler quilt with Mary Isbell.

Beginning Sailing

Literature and Writing C.S. Lewis’s The Problem of Pain

C.S. Lewis is arguably the most influential author of the 20th century, reaching audiences through academic works, fantasy novels, and apologetic works defending the reasonableness of the Christian faith. For many, his most celebrated works are The Chronicles of Narnia and Mere Christianity, but before he wrote those works, he began his theological writings by addressing a perennial question related to the perplexities of pain and suffering.

Together, we will wrestle with this “problem” in a discussion based, seminar-like class in 4 sessions: 1) Divine Omnipotence & Divine Goodness (Chs 1-3); 2)Human Wickedness & The Fall of Man (Chs 4-5); 3) Human Pain (Chs 6-7); and 4) Hell & Heaven (Chs 8 & 10). (Before class, participants purchase the book, The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis, which will be used during the class sessions for discussion.)

Dr. Patty Slaughter is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences. In her free time, she likes to run and read, with Lewis being one of her favorite authors. Dr. Ryan Neal is Associate Professor of Christian Studies and serves as Director of the University’s Honors Program. His teaching and research focus on theology, and one of his favorite courses is on the theology and writings of C.S. Lewis.

YOUR Life Matters: Writing About Your Life

Join Charmaine Smith-Miles, the Independent Mail’s Storyteller, and learn how to tell your own story. In the first session, learn why our stories matter, personally and collectively. In the second session, learn how to listen to your own narrative and shape it into something that you can pass

on to your children or grandchildren. In the third session, all participants will bring in a written story from their own life that they can then share with the class. In the fourth and final session, Ms. Smith-Miles will share her own feedback on what makes each of those stories powerful.

SC Academy of Authors Book Discussions

2016 marks the 30th Anniversary of the SC Academy of Authors, and they are going to celebrate here in Anderson! The South Carolina Academy of Authors was founded at Anderson University in 1986 with the principal purpose to identify and recognize the state’s distinguished writers and to promote their literature’s influence on our cultural heritage. Haven’t read all the books? Come anyway!

October 7: Pat Conroy (1988) – one of South Carolina’s most well-known authors. Mickey Spillane (2012) – mystery writer, creator of hardboiled detective, Mike Hammer.

October 14: Dorothea Benton Frank (2015) brings the SC Lowcountry to life with her books; Sue Monk Kidd (2011), author of The Secret Life of Bees and Invention of Wings, lived in Anderson for a number of years.

October 28: Julia Peterkin (1988), winner of SC’s first Pulitzer prize for Scarlet Sister Mary; Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. (1998), newspaper journalist and author of Cheaper by the Dozen.

Theatre takes center stage in this fall’s Weekender, climaxing with a Saturday trip to the Flat Rock Playhouse for the musical comedy, Pump Boys & Dinettes. Friday afternoon and evening, two veteran theatre directors will discuss aspects of theatre.

Dr. David Larson, dean of AU’s South Carolina School of the Arts, will share how to get the most out of attending theatre.

Emeritus Professor Lawrence Webb will lead an interactive session on religious and ethical implications of contemporary dramas and musicals. These engaging Friday evening sessions PROMISE to be uplifting and interesting! On Saturday morning, join Dr. Larson, for drama-talk about the play, Pump Boys & Dinettes before leaving for Flat Rock to enjoy the play and other festivities!
