AU strengthens position in U.S. News top tier rankings Anderson University rose two spots to #21 in the top tier of the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings for 2013 and was named for the fourth consecutive year as one of the 41 “up and coming” institutions in America others should be watching for its quality and innovation the second ranked in The South among regional colleges. Additionally, Anderson gained another prestigious recognition for the first time as it was named one of the 44 universities in America with an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, taking second in The South among regional colleges in that ranking. “We are very pleased that Anderson University continues to be recognized for its academic strength by independent evaluators such as U.S. News & World Report,” said Anderson University President Evans Whitaker. “We are especially
delighted to be named for the first time to its list of the top institutions with a strong commitment to teaching as well as to be named for the fourth consecutive year to the exclusive list of the nation’s ‘up and coming universities.’” Anderson has been named to the list of “up and coming” institutions since the list’s inception four years ago. Innovations like the Mobile Learning Initiative, in which freshmen have been given the latest iPads for use in specially designed classes; AU’s undergraduate cancer research center; an innovative new study abroad program; and a new criminal justice center of excellence have kept it on the list. Being cited as an unusually strong teaching institution is a new honor for the University. The list was developed by the magazine to highlight those colleges and universities that devote more resources to enriching teaching and learning between professors and students in the classroom than taking professors out of the classroom for research. “The awareness of the character and substance of our faculty and students is obviously increasing as is the growth and continuous innovation of the entire university,” Whitaker said.

with original hardwoods intact. In one classroom, the old Anderson College seal survived sanding and refinishing. In a lab that can house 12 cadavers, students will learn about the anatomy of the heart attack they just encountered in a manikin. Cadavers are usually reserved for medical students and physical therapy students. “We envisioned nurses being able to study on the human body instead of cats and frogs and such,” said School of Nursing Dean Pamela Binns-Turner. Binns-Turner said she knows of no other nursing program in the state with a cadaver lab dedicated to nursing students. Only the Medical University of South Carolina has more cadavers and simulators for nursing students, and they are shared with medical students. According to MUSC spokesman Tony Ciuffo, there are 25 manikins at the Charleston school.
Anderson University’s nursing simulation lab looks like a hospital, smells like a hospital and even has seven patients that breathe, blink and give birth. Noelle, Stan and Charlie, who range in age from newborn to adult, are tucked into hospital beds waiting to be pricked and prodded by accelerated nursing students, and later third and fourth year students. They are actually manikins, and each of the seven costs more than a Corvette. And unlike humans, their soft skin can be replaced after receiving several needle marks. The simulation lab looks like a section of a patient wing with its wide doorways and muted colors, and is one of the most advanced technologies that the university’s first nursing class will use to edge their way into a field that is highly in demand. Anderson University’s nursing school held its first classes in August, 50 years after its joint program with Anderson Memorial Hospital ended. It shares Vandiver Hall with the College of Business, in space formerly occupied by Whyte Gym. These days it looks like a miniature hospital outfitted in pale shades of blue, gray and brown

It’s the high-tech manikins that are most unusual. Binns-Turner talks to them as if expecting them to talk back. And sometimes they do. She walks to Hal, a five-year-old male manikin wearing blue shorts, and touches his arm. “How are you today, Hal?” she asks. “Don’t touch me,” he says. She leans back. “Are you all right?” she asks. “I want to go home,” he whines. Such interactions are common, and knowing how to respond to a child who is scared before dealing with the real thing makes better bedside manner. “It gives them the opportunity to be in a safe environment,” Binns-Turner said. “It allows them to make mistakes that we would never let them make on a patient.” Denise New, an accelerated student, said the simulators and cadavers attracted her to Anderson University’s program. “I think that’s a neat way to see the pathology and how everything works,” she said. She and other students have already begun
Binns-Turner calls him “Oz behind the curtains.” He even mixes the stand-in bodily secretions. His latest concoctions are neon yellow urine and green stomach fluid. Practicing with manikins should alleviate fear that so many students experience before they see real patients. “That was big for me,” Thrift said. “This is a little bit closer to the real thing.” He and the other eight other faculty members, including Binns-Turner, each work one day a week at a hospital in their chosen specialty. It keeps instructors in the loop, she said, and satisfies the nurse in them. installing catheters, listening to lung sounds and checking skin for abnormal lumps. “They can actually move nodules around in the simulators,” she said. “It’s not like you can tell the next student, ‘Oh, it’s to the left.’ You actually have to perform the technique to find it.”
The school will admit students once a year in the fall, Binns-Turner said, and next year it could have 10 more spots. The first class of 50 includes 32 traditional students in the four-year program and 18 accelerated students who will graduate in 15 months. Those students already have bachelor’s degrees and are embarking on a second career.
The nursing school’s wireless capabilities and pantilt zoom cameras in lab ceilings allow students to practice installing a nasogastric tube, for example, and then press the record button to be tested and later assessed by an instructor.
Accelerated student Chris Tate of Pendleton originally wanted to go to medical school, but the money required and time he would spend apart from his new wife changed his mind.
“We don’t even have to be in South Carolina,” Binns-Turner said.
“I’m more of a preventive care-type person,” he said. “A lot of doctors push procedures and treatment over preventive medicine. The nursing model is pushing preventive care over that.”
As fascinating as the manikins are, she said, it is the debriefing room where the most learning happens. After a hands-on test, instructors and students sit around a table and talk. It is akin to the morning rounds doctors do. They talk about the mechanics and emotions involved in scenarios. Sometimes manikins are programmed to die. Others may have seizures. “They’re like real people,” said Anderson University spokesman Barry Ray. “They moan and groan and change their breathing. It’s almost spooky.” Jason Thrift, a registered nurse on staff, programs the manikins’ actions and voices from a centralized room that looks into patient rooms by window or computer.

Anderson University has joined the University Center of Greenville The Board of Trustees of the University Center of Greenville, Inc. (UCG) announced the addition of Anderson University (AU) as the University Center’s seventh Academic Member. The addition of AU strengthens UCG’s mission as a coalition of community leaders working in collaboration with academic and public sector leaders to advance access and attainment of higher education bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees benefiting the citizens and economic community of Greater Greenville, South Carolina. A team from Anderson University has been busy preparing new space in the University Center that will serve as Anderson’s presence in Greenville. The first MBA class will begin on January 13. Ben Haskew, President of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, added, “Anderson University’s partnership with the University Center of Greenville is good news for our community. As we continue work to grow per capita income, education is one of four driving factors that will make Greenville and the Upstate region stronger economically. The additional MBA programs A nderson University will offer will be attractive to our citizens and the business community.” A long-standing institution in the Upstate, AU celebrated its Centennial in 2011, and was named the #1 “Up and Coming” college in the South by U.S. News & World Report. As a part of AU’s continued growth over the last several years, it will expand into the Greenville market first with its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. The AU MBA focuses on quantitative and qualitative management practices within a Christian ethical framework. “Not only is the Anderson MBA one of the most affordable and convenient programs available in the Upstate, but its focus on ethics distinguishes it
from other programs,” says Barry Ray, Anderson University spokesman. “Our graduates believe that it is important to be given the most effective and cutting-edge tools to develop business leadership, but that those tools should be employed within an ethical framework so that they can lead with integrity. Additionally, our program is designed with ‘real world applications’ drawn from the widely varied professional backgrounds of our professors. These backgrounds include various sectors of industrial as well as military careers.” David A. Taylor, President and Chief Operating Officer of UCG, added, “A nderson University’s academic programs will be excellent complements to over 70 bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees offered by Member Academic institutions at UCG. The initial offering of Anderson University’s fully-accredited and very competitively-priced MBA program directly supports our mission of facilitating attainment of cost-effective and centrally-located higher education degrees for the benefit of Greater Greenville’s citizens and economic community.” Designed for the working professional, the MBA program offers one of the best values in the Upstate, as the tuition for the program is significantly less than most other locally-available accredited MBA programs. This local value is further reflected by the university’s fourth consecutive placement on “America’s 100 Best College Buys” – an independent ranking by Institutional Evaluation & Research, Inc. Classes will be offered at UCG and the 36 credit hour program can be completed in just 20 months. Instructors include professional faculty members, all with PhD’s and industry experience. Students will have the advantage of completing the program in cohorts, and focusing on one course at a time. “We are most excited to be partnering with the University Center of Greenville. As we launch this initial program, we look forward to becoming an integral part of the great opportunities UCG provides to students in the Greenville area,” said Dr. Danny Parker, Anderson University Provost. “We believe that UCG is one of the most important educational assets in the state and we’re happy to be a part of expanding its already impressive list of degree options.”

Faces of AU Anderson students teach and perform in China and Peru while at least one person they touched finds a new home at AU. Meet the MISTERs
Call Me MISTER by Evelyn Beck In the late 1990s, African American males made up less than 1 percent of the teachers in South Carolina public schools. So even though a third of the state’s students are African American, only 200 of 20,000 teachers were black men. “Every research report anywhere shows that teachers teaching in communities and schools that reflect their same background tend to be more effective,” says Dr. Roy Jones, executive director of Call Me MISTER at Clemson University. To address that shortage, Clemson University and three historically black colleges—Benedict College, Claflin College, and Morris College—collaborated to create the Call Me MISTER program in 2000. “MISTER” is an acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role-models. The program’s purpose is to recruit African American males in

South Carolina into the teaching profession, especially at the elementary school level. The Misters receive tuition assistance and mentoring and are part of a support system, but that’s not all. “We’re not a scholarship program; we’re not just giving out money,” says Jones. “We really are a leadership development program. These students are developing skill sets that are beyond what is required of teacher education programs.” They develop through weekly meetings with their peers, statewide summits each semester, summer internships, and leadership institutes. “We’re preparing well-rounded, well-developed teachers to go into pretty tough situations,” says Jones. Students in the program commit to teach in South Carolina public schools for one year for each year of support they receive. AU became involved in 2010. “Anderson University was pretty critical in terms of our expansion,” says Jones. The fact that AU does not charge nonresident
tuition was important in attracting students from out of state. Also key was that it’s small and faith-based. “For a lot of our students, that is a preference,” says Jones. The AU program, which is part of the College of Education, currently has eight students. “We’re not trying to reach a certain number,” says program director Beverly McAdams, AU’s Associate Vice President for Student Development. “We look more for who is a good fit, who feels this is a calling to devote their career to. They have to be disciplined and understand the expectations. They are their brother’s keeper. They encourage and help each other as far as academic and emotional and spiritual support.” The Misters at AU are always looking for ways to make an impact. In March they hosted their first middle school conference. About 60 boys from five middle schools attended sessions on topics such as bullying, study habits, and peer pressure. The Misters also volunteer in four schools as mentors and tutors: Calhoun Elementary School, Nevitt Forest Elementary School, Robert Anderson Middle School, and Glenview Middle School. James Hogue, a senior, first got involved with Call Me MISTER at Greenville Technical College, then was drawn to AU by its involvement with the program. Home schooled by his parents, Hogue always valued education, but he’s seen a lot of others who don’t. “I want to be the person in a child’s life to show them you need to do this or that and not to do this or that, to rise above,” he says. He enjoys going into schools and talking to students. He often hears boys say their goal is to play football or basketball. “We encourage them that it’s okay to have those dream; but if you don’t have the education to back it up, the likelihood is extremely low,” he says. And he talks about “having integrity, being a person of character, who you are
when no one is looking.” Senior Alven Brown talks with fatherly pride about the progress of the youngsters he’s worked with: “They’re saying thank you and yes sir and no sir. Small things like that make it worth it for me. Nobody ever took the time out to teach them how polite they need to be. Hearing it from us made them feel that it was important enough to work on. We don’t necessarily see academic scores, but they’re interested in school and want to do the work. Having college students talk to them lets them think, ‘We can go to college.’ They don’t have to follow the statistics and flunk out of high school. Having someone who looks like them in the classroom gives them hope it can be done.” Shondarious Williams, a junior, agrees. “We bring different vibes and are closer to their ages,” he says. “We show them how to live and can be an example. We grow a lot through doing this. These people look up to us. It’s like I have 20 little brothers. I want the best future for them.” That future is already looking brighter. Since 2004, the Call Me MISTER program has graduated about 100 young men, with 143 more currently enrolled. Every single one of them has found a teaching position. All of them are making a difference. Some have earned recognition as their school’s Teacher of the Year, and some have even become principals already. “We’ve debunked any ideas that black males don’t want to be teachers, even at the elementary level,” says Jones. “We’ve attracted some wonderful young men. I look forward to their graduating and getting in the game.”

Anderson Students Share Love, Music and Education All Over the World In the past few years, we’ve chronicled dozens of mission trips involving hundreds of AU students to places like Honduras, Guatemala, Italy, India, and every other corner of the globe. There will be mission trips to those places and more throughout the year, but Anderson also provides cultural and educational trips. A key part of Anderson University’s strategic plan is a robust and widely varied International Studies program. Two such overseas exchanges are featured in word and pictures here. The Anderson University Chamber Singers participated in a March cultural visit to Peru. 13 students, three faculty/staff, and two of their

The singers performed at universities with local choirs, convention center, and other venues. They also got to visit the spectacular Machu Picchu. One student summed the trip up this way:
“I enjoyed having the opportunity to experience a new culture - especially through music! Being able to sing alongside a Peruvian choir put into perspective how music breaks cultural barriers. As musicians from two completely different worlds, we were able to come together and enjoy the joy of music.”

miraculous road leads Chinese student to Anderson Her given name is Xiaoyan Jiang, but on the Anderson University campus and anywhere else in the U.S. for that matter, her name is simply Gemma. If you stand in one spot long enough on campus, you’re bound to meet her because the petite bundle of boundless energy from China is determined to make the most of her time here. Studying at Anderson University has been a dream of hers for years; and thanks to a dedicated professor, some unlikely benefactors, and a set of miraculous circumstances, her dream is coming true. Gemma’s journey actually began with another journey by someone she had never met. Associate

Professor of English Sarah Sprague traveled to China in 2006 to map out a sabbatical she hoped to take the next year. Working through the Consortium for Global Education, of which Anderson is a member, she taught in Chinese schools and toured a country with which she had long been fascinated. Growing up, she had always said that if she didn’t get married, she’d love to be a housemother in an orphanage. Though she did in fact marry fellow AU faculty member Stuart Sprague, derailing those plans, she maintained a fascination with orphanages and visited one in China. By chance during that visit, she was taken with a young teen with a bright smile and an engaging, energetic personality. It was Gemma, and she was as fascinated by this American teacher as the teacher was with her. “We stayed in contact by email, and we saw each other the next year on my sabbatical,” recalls Sarah. They connected on later trips as well as the Anderson University study abroad program took
shape and groups of students and professors traveled to China. Gemma proved a skilled translator and guide as well as a favorite character for AU students. “In 2011 I gave out an evaluation form at the end of the trip for our students to fill out,” Sarah remembers. “Gemma rated higher with the students than the Great Wall!”
“Non-profit organizations are like patients who need blood from others to live. We want to generate our own blood.”
Gemma AU student
This summer the Anderson University Teaching Fellows traveled to Shanghai to work in a school. The trip was led by Margaret Hicks of Anderson’s College of Education. Sarah Sprague accompanied the group on the trip; and once again, Gemma was the trusted guide and translator. Having graduated from a prestigious Chinese university, Gemma was working for a non-profit organization called, Vision in Practice, which provides cataract surgery for those living in poor, rural areas of China. “The work is very good and well-intentioned,” says Gemma during a break from studies in the library. “I felt we needed good business practices to make our work sustainable though. We need to rely less on donations and become more of a sustainable organization. Non-profit organizations are like patients who need blood from others to live. We want to generate our own blood.” Gemma and Sarah decided an MBA from Anderson University would give Gemma the business savvy she needed to help Vision in
Practice. But even though Sarah had a place in her own home for Gemma, there were countless obstacles to overcome. If the dream were to become reality. The biggest the cost of not only the MBA program, but the prerequisite courses she needed to qualify for the MBA cohort. Sarah, in her words, “kept looking in different corners” to help Gemma realize her dream. When all possibilities seemed exhausted, Jane Cahaly, who heads AU’s study abroad program and is a Rotary Club member in Anderson, recalled scholarships for foreign students Upstate South Carolina clubs provide. A few more strange connections involving parents of incoming students and hundreds of emails, Skype interviews, and other serendipitous quirks of fate, each of which would make a good story, Gemma found herself at AU with a full scholarship, a place to live and a dream come true. She smiles when she thinks about her fortune while Sarah calls it the providence of God and a miracle, concepts Gemma is only now beginning to learn about. One thing she does know for certain, however, is that she loves the openness and warmth of the Anderson University community. “The biggest surprise has been a good one,” she says. “The professors are very accessible here. In China, even though I attended one of the most prestigious universities in the whole country, I couldn’t approach a professor. Here they answer my questions and are accessible and very competent as well.” She also finds her fellow students to be quite different from the people she grew up with in China. “The students are so open to each other here,” she says. “They will always smile and say hello. In Shanghai, people don’t talk to each other.” That is, people not named Gemma, whose natural curiosity and eagerness to meet people in 2006 began a friendship that led her down a remarkable path to a dream come true.

The Anderson County Emergency Services Department has been very active in preparing agencies in our area for possible emergencies as well. FEMA’s National Center for Biomedical Research and Training, Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education from LSU taught a three-day training session for emergency preparedness personnel from Anderson, Abbeville, Oconee, and Greenville counties, the Oconee Nuclear Center, DHEC, and others,” he added. While the center is now alive with activity throughout the week, there is still room in the renovated building in downtown Anderson for other partners to become a part of the Center of Excellence. Negotiations are ongoing with local, regional, state, and even national law enforcement and emergency preparedness partners on possible future collaborations as the center grows.
A nderson University’s first permanent off-campus learning center, The Criminal Justice Center of Excellence and Homeland Security opened in August as AU’s Criminal Justice program and Command College of South Carolina began holding classes, while the Anderson County Emergency Operations Center joined them in one of the few collaborations between education and working law enforcement and emergency operations in the country.

I have had a number of students remark about how much they enjoy having classes in this building. They are also excited about sharing a building with Anderson County law enforcement officials. Personnel from the Anderson County Emergency Services are equally excited about their facilities in this building.”

After claiming its second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Tournament title in 2011, the Anderson University men’s soccer team was picked to finish third this season in a vote by the league’s coaches, but the reigning regular-season South Atlantic Conference champions and two-time defending tournament titleholders will be looking to replace four All-Conference performers, including twotime SAC Player of the Year Lasse Sohrweide. A nderson, which finished last season ranked 25th in the nation, set a new school record with 17 wins and advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament after posting a perfect 9-0 regularseason conference record. The Trojans also posted a school-record 11-match win streak en route to climbing as high as sixth in the polls. A trio of seniors — Lukas Hesse, Shu Ogawa, and Ben Jones — will be expected to lead the Trojans as they defend the title. Hesse started every match between the pipes last season en route to garnering first-team all-conference accolades a year ago and recorded nine shutouts on the season. His save percentage of 0.79 ranked 39th in the country and goals against average (0.996) was in the top two in the league and 43rd in the nation. Hesse posted 79 saves, while playing all but 19 minutes of the season.
Ogawa, a defensive midfielder, was named secondteam all-region and ranked third on the team with three assists on the season. He started 14 consecutive matches last season before suffering an injury. Jones, a 5-foot-7 midfielder, has started 45 matches and seen action in 61 contests during his three-year career. He notched a goal and a pair of assists last season and also performed in the classroom, being named the SAC Scholar-Athlete for men’s soccer. Ogawa and Hesse earned first-team preseason allconference accolades in August, while sophomore Tapiwa Munetsi and senior Zak Moss garnered second-team honors. Munetsi, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, saw action in 20 matches and started three contests. He was second in a very balanced offensive attack with 15 points on the strength of seven goals and an assist, while also ranking among team leaders with 14 shots on goal. The Anderson native booted two gamewinners last season, recording the first goal in a 3-0 shutout past Catawba and also notched the winning score in a 4-2 win over Wingate. Moss, a 5-foot-6 defender, played in 20 matches and drew a starting nod in 19. He played a pivotal part in AU’s nine shutouts and notched an assist in the Trojans’ 2-0 shutout at Brevard.
women’s soccer The Anderson women’s soccer team, which surprised a number of opponents a year ago, is determined to build on its previous success in 2012. The Trojans, who were tabbed to finish sixth in the South Atlantic Conference Coaches’ Poll, returned nine starters off last season’s squad that posted a 9-10-1 record and advanced to the semifinals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Tournament under firstyear head coach Samar Azem. Four of the top six scorers from last season are back on the pitch, while the nucleus of a stellar defensive unit that set a school record with seven shutouts will also return. Six of the returnees earned either first or secondteam preseason all-conference honors after turning in outstanding efforts last season and helping lead the squad to a No. 10 ranking in the Southeast Region during the season. Blending seven newcomers in with the returning veterans to build team unity was one of the goals of the preseason. A pair of seniors, Jessica Kleinberg and Carrie Settle, along with junior forward Krystal Goss are expected to lead the way up top.

Kleinberg led the team with six goals last season and earned first-team preseason All-SAC honors, while Settle saw action in every match and scored a goal in the 3-1 road win past Converse. Goss was a second-team All-SAC selection after posting 33 shots a year ago and booted a pair of gamewinning scores on the season, while adding a team-best four assists. Carrie Settle, Chelsea Hamrick and Olivia Scalzitti also offer the Trojan coaching staff some options, as the trio possesses the versatility to see playing time in the midfield. The Trojans’ net-minder, junior Kaitlyn Neipp, also earned a preseason all-conference nod after a superb sophomore campaign that saw the T.L. Hanna product rank 47th nationally in save percentage while garnering 94 saves on the season and anchoring the defense. “We had a couple of last-minute roster changes, but it’s not necessarily about the quantity of players. It’s about the quality of players we have on our roster. We have very good quality players and I’m very excited about moving on with them. They have what it takes to achieve our goals and the best thing is that they are a very passionate, committed group. Opposing teams will have to work hard and give it everything to beat us and that’s what makes me feel so positive about the players we have coming in and the players we have returning.”
men’s cross country The Anderson University men’s cross country team posted a third-place finish in its inaugural appearance in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships in 2010, then notched second place as an encore last season. If the Trojans are to contend for the top spot in the SAC, they will have to break Mars Hill’s grip on the title, as the Lions have claimed the crown an astounding 15 consecutive years. Mars Hill has not finished lower than first place since Elon captured the title in 1996 – with MHC finishing second that year. No other school in the history of the SAC has taken home the championship besides Mars Hill, Elon (three times) and Lenoir-Rhyne (once).

Mars Hill was tabbed as the preseason favorite again in 2012, narrowly edging AU for the top spot in the SAC Coaches’ Poll. Anderson had three student-athletes named to the preseason AllSAC Team, including first-teamers Parks Edwards and A lex Pena. Both finished in the top 10 at last year’s SAC Championship. “Our goal is to win the conference championship,” said Anderson head coach Randy Greer. “We were very close last year. It’s going to be a lot closer this year, if it can be closer. For the most part we have the same team back from last year and the guys have a chance to finish strong again this year. Our top five runners will be just as strong as last year.” The Trojans nearly dethroned nationally fifthranked Mars Hill last season, finishing just two points behind the Lions and return four runners who posted top-15 finishes in last season’s championship. Edwards paced the Trojans with a fourth-place effort, earning First-Team All-SAC accolades. Pena garnered an eighth-place finish, while junior Kyle Koby was named Second-team All-SAC after crossing the line in 12th.
“The conference is much stronger than it used to be. Mars Hill has had a long run, and both Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne are going to be strong.”
of the top three teams – it’s just a matter of how we match up and how we do on that particular day. It will be a challenge to finish as high at the regional level.”
women’s cross country
Every returning Trojan runner posted a top-25 finish in last year’s league championship, with Robles leading the group with a ninth-place finish,
After winning its second consecutive Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship last October, the Anderson University women’s cross country team will be looking to make its mark in league history this season. No South Atlantic Conference team has claimed three straight championships since Mars Hill put a stranglehold on the title with five consecutive SAC crowns in the late nineties, while CarsonNewman notched three championships earlier in that decade. In its debut in the SAC, Anderson snapped Lenoir-Rhyne’s two-year win streak with the Trojans’ first league title in 2010. If AU head coach Randy Greer, the two-time SAC Coach of the Year, is to guide his squad to a successful encore, the Trojans will need to find a way to replace former standout and current assistant coach Whitney Bishoff. The Winder, Ga., native posted a phenomenal career during her time at Anderson, earning Conference Runner of the Year in both the South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas, while capturing the individual title at the league championships and made two consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, earning All-America status in 2009 and holding numerous school records. Anderson was been voted No. 1 in the 2012 preseason SAC Coaches’ Poll, despite losing Bishoff, last year’s SAC Championship individual runner-up, to graduation and receiving five first-place votes in the poll. AU had three studentathletes named to the 2012 preseason All-SAC Team, led by first-team pick Hannah Robles. “It will be a completely different year without Whitney up front,” said Greer. “There will be a different feel to the team. We’ll be more of a pack-oriented team this year. We can do well at the conference level and we do have a shot at the conference championship. I believe we can be one
while also garnering second-team all-conference honors. Senior A manda Mahaffey, who crossed the line in 14th, was also named Second-Team All-SAC. Sophomore Sydney Hazel was named to the conference A ll-Freshman team after finishing 15th, while senior Emily Eckroth crossed the line in the 20th spot and junior Rachel Westberry finished 25th a year ago. “We’re going to have a group of girls that have won two conference championships; and with the exception of Whitney, they’re all still together,” added Greer. “We have a very experienced team.”

with different looks, depending on who’s playing well,” said Mosqueda. “And we will be better both offensively and defensively.”
Trojan fans will undoubtedly be familiar with this year’s Black and Gold, as fourth-year head coach Craig Mosqueda’s roster features 11 returning letterwinners, including eight sophomores, one junior and two seniors, along with four newcomers who are expected to vie for playing time.
Mosqueda believes he has the right mix of leadership, proven contributors and incoming talent to compete in the South Atlantic Conference.
Eight of the returning letterwinners saw significant playing time during the 2011 campaign and four have already made their mark in the school record books.
Mosqueda will rely on Meghan Cautero (So., 5-9, S) to set the table for her teammates this season after the sophomore saw action in all 30 matches during her rookie season a year ago. She already ranks in the top ten in the school record books in career assists after just one season, dishing out 753 assists, which was good enough for fourth place in assists per set (7.68) in Trojan volleyball history. The Naples, Fla., native recorded at least 30 digs on seven occasions last season, while notching three double-doubles.
The team boasts proven academic prowess, with an impressive nine team members named to the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll last year, and earned AVCA Team Academic honors during the offseason. AU will look to match that academic success with on-the-court achievement as well. “We will be very versatile and have the flexibility to move players around to different positions and go

middle blockers Standout Tiffany Rowe (Sr., 6-3, MB) returns for her senior season and is expected to anchor the middle defensively after leading the team in blocks each of the past two seasons. One of the most accomplished blockers in Anderson history, Rowe ranked 26th in the nation in blocks per set (1.14) last year, while equaling the seventh-highest singleseason block tally with 112 last year. She notched a staggering 13 total blocks versus Mars Hill in late October; and entering her final season, the native of Myrtle Beach is poised to move even higher in the AU record books. Quality depth and versatility is a luxury Coach Mosqueda possesses this season, with another formidable sophomore, Hailey Pittman (So., 5-10, MB) in the middle. Pittman was third on the team with 137 kills last season and posted 27 total blocks. She ripped 12 service aces and led the team in attack percentage, posting a season-best .467 attack percentage at Lincoln Memorial on Oct. 22.
outside/rightside Shannon Gillespie (So., 5-10, OH) is a sophomore who brings tremendous athletic ability to the outside position; and in 2011 the Fishers, Ind., native asserted herself as one of the most powerful offensive weapons on the team, finishing first on the team with 312 kills, 26 service aces and ranked third on the team with 278 digs. Gillespie erupted to lead the Trojans in kills nine times, while reaching double-figure kills on 16 occasions and posted 12 double-doubles on the season. Joining Gillespie on the outside will be the squad’s lone junior, Joy Hiller (Jr., 6-0, OH/RH). A native of Greenville, S.C., Hiller was second on the team with 142 kills, leading the Trojans with a season-high 14 kills versus Flagler and 13 versus Lenoir-Rhyne, while rightside hitter Kelley Lacey (So., 5-9, RS), a sophomore from Farmland, Ind., will also see action on the outside. Lacey played in 29 matches, posting 136 digs, 95 kills and 18 assists on the season and was fourth on the team with 11 service aces.
defensive specialist/libero Another pair of sophomore leaders, Alix Hooker (So., 5-6, DS/L) and Kalie Endres (So., 5-6, DS/L) will be patrolling the backcourt again this season and Mosqueda again enjoys the flexibility of being able to switch players listed as liberos and defensive specialists on the roster. Endres ranked eighth in the league with nearly 400 digs last season, seeing action in 28 matches, while Hooker ranked second on the squad with more than 300 digs to her credit.
