520 freshmen walked through archway of AU, marking the start of college career 520 new freshmen moved onto the scenic campus of Anderson University Saturday, August 17 as the new academic year got underway with Welcome Week festivities for new students. This is the second largest freshmen class in AU history, less than ten below the record set last year. Also, a near record 115-120 transfer students will come to Anderson for a total of 635-640 new students. The University expects to reach 3,000 in total enrollment for the first time in its history in 2014. Though the skies were overcast, spirits were bright on Anderson University’s campus on Sunday, August 18. As hundreds of students had done before them, AU’s incoming freshmen class participated in what is quickly becoming one of campus’s most memorable traditions: the archway walk. The ceremony is one that AU students do only twice: at matriculation to officially begin their college experience, and at commencement to mark the end of their time as an AU student. It bookends the AU experience. On this unseasonably cool August morning, freshmen gathered in front of Thrift Library to prepare for their first archway walk. While waiting, they reflected on words they had just heard from guest speaker and Founder and President of Crossroads Worldwide, Clayton King. Preaching from Luke chapter 2, King had spoken about the opportunities for growth and change when you leave home, asking the students who they want to be when they leave Anderson. “Who you are becoming determines where you are going,” King had said. “And who you follow determines who you become.” It was with this in mind that freshman business major Robert Murphy from Charleston lined up
with his new classmates to begin the walk. He was familiar with the tradition, as his sister, Sarah, is a junior at AU and had walked the same steps just two years earlier. “I think it’s cool that it’s the official entrance and then also the official exit of college,” Murphy said. Approximately 520 freshmen made their way from the library down the Kingsley Road sidewalk and left along South Boulevard. Parents, siblings and friends of the students lined the sidewalk to offer applause and cheers as their loved ones passed by. In the crowd was Murphy’s mother, Susan.
“We feel the archway walk is a way to confirm to new students that they belong here. It is an opportunity for families to show their support and help celebrate the beginning of their student’s college experience. But at the same time, the walk is a reminder of the other bookend: of the goal to graduate.” - Dr. Bob Cline
Vice President for Christian Life
“It’s great to see all the students come through,” Susan Murphy said. “It’s such a neat thing that they do that in the beginning and at the end. I feel like it’s such a great tradition for Anderson, and of course you get really excited when you see your kid come through!” The highlight of the ceremony took place at the historic Anderson University arch, a as students shook hands with President and Mrs. Evans Whitaker before passing through the arch on their way up to Merritt Administration Building. According to Dr. Bob Cline, Vice President of Christian Life, it is a celebratory experience. When all students finished the walk, AU’s newest class enjoyed a quick photo opportunity. President Whitaker then shared a few words before leading the students in a cheer that they will echo at the end of their commencement ceremony: “Long live Anderson!”

done by the faculty and students in the division that beginning today is formerly the College of Visual and Performing Arts. We believe that South Carolina students and talented students from all over will benefit from the opportunity to study and perform with our accomplished faculty and talented students in one of the nation’s outstanding comprehensive universities.” Mann, who has spent his life as a professional musician, composer, conductor, and leader of the Grammy Award winning Johnny Mann Singers said, “My wife, Betty and I, relocated to Anderson from California a few years ago. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some very talented musical artists over my career, and I have to tell you that Anderson University has one of the finest schools of the arts anywhere. We fell in love with AU shortly after we moved here, and the creation of The South Carolina School of the Arts is one of the most exciting things among many that we have seen happen at AU over the last few years. They are doing a great job, and they’ll do an even greater job of preparing professional artists with this new name for the arts division.” Among other notable accomplishments, Mann recorded and released approximately three-dozen
albums, was the musical director for the Joey Bishop Show, hosted the TV show Stand Up and Cheer, and was choral director for the NBC Comedy Hour. In 1967, Mann’s version of the song Up Up and Away, rose to number 6 on the pop music chart in the United Kingdom. He remains active in the music business today. Initially, The South Carolina School of the Arts will be housed in the facilities of the Rainey Fine Arts Center on the Anderson campus, but growth in facilities and enrollment in the program is inevitable.
With a total enrollment in excess of 320 students, the new School of the Arts offers the B.A. in Art with emphases in Graphic Design, Art Education, Ceramics and Painting and Drawing. The Music Department offers B.M. degrees in Vocal, Instrumental and Keyboard Performance, as well as Worship Leadership and Commercial Music. Rounding out the Music program is the B.A. in Music and the successful B.M.E. degrees in Choral and Instrumental Music. The Theatre Department offers a B.A. in Acting/Directing, Dance, Design/Technology, as well as a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre. According to Dr. Jo Carol Mitchell-Rogers, Chair of the Art and Design Department, “the name is symbolic of the caliber of artistic work that is produced here at Anderson. The arts are a celebrated and valued part of our growing community.” In the last five years, Graphic Design at AU has emerged as the dominant regional program, with students winning numerous Gold ADDY Awards at the national level. The Graphic Design program is characterized by successful internships and career placements. Driven by a problem-solving Freshmen Foundations program,
AU’s 160 Art students weave creativity and technical skill into their individual concentration. Music chair, Dr. David Perry, underscores the compelling vision behind the new designation for the South Carolina School of the Arts. With a new curriculum in Commercial Music, and a robust keyboard program, the Music Department is aggressively expanding its influence on the future of Music. The Worship Leadership program is unique in its focus on strong musical fundamentals and flexible application. The Music Education program recently expanded to include a Masters of Music in Music Education degree. Dr. Deborah McEniry, Chair of the Theatre Department notes that “the curriculum and faculty are in place for a dynamic and stellar academic and production oriented Theatre Program.” Building on the strength of the current faculty, the Theatre Department will launch a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre in the fall of 2013. The critically acclaimed production of Barnum was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Regional Festival in February of 2013. Graduates are working as actors and technicians and as M.F.A. students at premiere universities. According to Dr. David Larson, dean of the new school, “The South Carolina School of the Arts believes that intense, transformative mentorship inspires this generation of artists to develop their creative talents to their fullest potential. We also coach students to identify and value how their skills can be applied in the career they envision as well as in related fields. Professors—from Hollywood recording musicians to sought-after art directors—represent the highest level of artistic achievement, and they want to show students how they can get there too.” The South Carolina School of the Arts trains professional visual, musical and theatrical artists who are serious about both their art and Christian faith. Staffed by highly trained and world-class artists, musicians, actors, dancers, theatrical designers, and scholars, we mentor students to develop their artistry to its fullest potential so they may thrive professionally and serve others through the arts.

325 graduate at Anderson University in May ceremony Commencement group the 7th consecutive record for AU Further demonstrating its remarkable growth over the past decade, Anderson University gave diplomas to a record 325 students on a chilly Saturday during commencement exercises, surpassing last year’s record number of 307 graduates. Despite temperatures in the 50s, a brisk wind and the threat of rain, graduates and their families were thankful that this class was able to participate in the time-honored tradition of commencement on the scenic front lawn of the campus. Of the 325 students graduating on Saturday, 49 received Masters degrees in AU’s graduate program. David L. Warren, president of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities praised Anderson University as one of the most nationally recognized emerging universities among private schools in the nation. He delivered a challenging and inspiring address urging graduates to focus on the “boundary” decisions in life – those that would separate them from their families and friends and establish them as independent forces for change in society. Focusing on the historical examples of Winston Churchill and President Harry S. Truman, Warren recounted difficult and controversial
decisions each man faced as boundary decisions, aligning their minds with their hearts. He told the Anderson graduates that their generation would face boundary decisions about human cloning, the scientific extension of human life beyond quality of life and how to deal with the most vulnerable in society – the very old, the very young, the very sick and the very poor. “I hope as Harry Truman told his biographer,” he told the graduates, “that you will be able to say ‘I did the very best that I could and I have no regrets’ and that, like Churchill, you will be able to say ‘I never gave up.’” David L. Warren became president of the NAICU in 1993, after nearly a decade as president of Ohio Wesleyan University. A tireless crusader for America’s private colleges and for increased financial aid funding for all college students, Dr. Warren is widely regarded as one of the most persuasive and influential voices for higher education within Washington, D.C. He is frequently asked to speak at higher education national conferences and on campuses, and is regularly quoted by the news media on national higher education issues. John Miller, CEO of AnMed Health and Peggy Deane, retired from AnMed, were honored by the University with honorary degrees during commencement exercises. Biology majors Katey Robinson, Zach Perdun travel to Peruvian rainforest, test extract for cancer treatment Two AU biology majors have joined the fight to find a cure for cancer as a result of a school-sponsored trip to a remote area in the Amazon jungle. Greenwood, South Carolina, native Katey Robinson, and Zach Perdun, a junior from Simpsonville, South Carolina, are researching compounds that could be developed into cancerfighting drugs. Their research is a direct result of an AU trip to Peru in 2012 to study the Amazon’s ecology as well as rainforest conservation.

“A principal reason I selected AU is due to its reputation for exposing students to different cultures through study abroad. This was emphasized during freshman orientation, and when I heard about an opportunity to go to Peru at an AU Science Club meeting, I was hooked.” - Katey Robinson Robinson, Perdun and six other students formed the AU contingent, along with biology professors Dr. Frank Norris Jr. and Dr. Margarit Gray, who led the group. Dr. Diana Ivankovic, director of the AU Center for Cancer Research, also participated and played a key role in the decision by Robinson and Perdun to undertake the research, which centers on evaluating a plant extract found on the trip for its
cancer-fighting ability. Dr. Ivankovic developed an interest in the plant, an interest shared by Robinson and Perdun, who signed up to conduct tests on the extract to figure out what it contains.
and she is leaning toward working in the medical field after she graduates. Perdun plans to enter medical school with a goal of becoming a neurosurgeon.
Robinson and Perdun developed proposals for their research in 2013 with plans to start fullscale testing at the Center for Cancer Research in the fall under Dr. Ivankovic’s leadership.
Both students also agree that the experience was rewarding because it forced them out of their comfort zones and immersed them in a completely different culture. With the other members of the AU group, they flew to Lima, Peru’s capital, headed for Iquitos, a city in the northeast, and then traveled by boat for two hours up a tributary of the Amazon to Chino, a small village near the convergence of the borders of Peru, Brazil and Colombia.
Robinson pointed out in her proposal that compounds from plant extracts found in the Amazon region have been used in countless cancer studies.
“My research will focus on whether the extract has any effect on cancer cells that attack the human digestive system.” - Katey Robinson Robinson will use part of the extract to determine its effect on pancreatic cancer cells, while Perdun will use a portion of it to evaluate its influence on cancerous nerve cells. Dr. Ivankovic said Robinson and Perdun’s effort could be a stepping stone in the quest for a cancer cure. “Stranger things have happened in medical research,” Dr. Ivankovic said. One of the goals of the Center for Cancer Research is to help students gain first-hand scientific research experience, whether on a national or international scale. Robinson and Perdun agree that AU excels at this and points to the trip to Peru as a prime example. The trip was influential in other ways as well: “I may make Spanish my minor,” Robinson said,
“We were truly in the depths of the Amazon rainforest,” Perdun said. “ ‘Remote’ is an appropriate description of our location.” Despite its remoteness, the village was ideal as a base camp for studying the rainforest. However, a chance encounter with a village leader brought a different focus to the trip. The equivalent of a neighborhood doctor, the leader shared with the group his methods of treating sick people, one of which is to use an extract from the bark of a local plant to alleviate stomach cancer. Dr. Ivankovic immediately spotted an opportunity here.“Most of the cancer research underway today involves testing different plants to determine if they might yield the right compounds to make drugs that will one day cure this dreaded disease. So I bought a quantity of his extract to take back to our Center for Cancer Research for evaluation.” Robinson and Perdun shared her enthusiasm for the extract’s potential, and now they’re devoting their time and effort to determining its secrets as a cancer fighter. “It was an outstanding experience,” Perdun said. “As for the trip to the Amazon, I’d love to go again.”

Anderson University interior design dean wins national award The American Society of Interior Designers has named Anderson University’s Anne Martin as the national faculty advisor of the year. Martin was honored at the national ASID conference in Los Angeles in June. Martin and Interior Design student Misty Brecht were honored in a lavish ceremony in the Crystal Ballroom at the historic Millennium Biltmore hotel in downtown Los Angeles for Celebration. The ASID Design Awards were hosted by Emmy Award-winning television host Mark Brunetz, the evening honored the recipients of the 2013 ASID Design Awards and the 2013 ASID Class of Fellows, among others. Student Chapters of ASID
from across the country nominated their faculty advisors for recognition. Last year, Martin was also honored with an honorable mention in the same category. Elisabeth Lyons, the president of the student chapter of ASID for Anderson University says Martin’s students were delighted that she received the recognition for her longtime record of excellence in teaching and mentoring students. “As the president of our Student Chapter of ASID, I have had the privilege of working closely alongside Ms. Martin over the past year, says Lyons. “Her guidance and leadership has been instrumental in the growth of our chapter and of each of us personally. It is such an honor for our chapter of ASID to have this national recognition, and we are pleased that our student nomination of Ms. Martin has played a part in her receiving this award.” Ann Martin, Dean of the School of Interior Design

AU interior design major given national recognition
“With the sponsorship of HGTV, we are able to communicate the importance of design to a larger audience of design enthusiasts and underscore the value of education. The caliber of the work submitted gives great hope to the future of an industry which thrives on improving the human experience.” “HGTV is proud to partner with ASID on this initiative which honors future designers, sustainability and social good. This competition underscores the value of how thoughtful planning can create spaces with purpose, one of the principles of good design.” Vikki Neil, Senior Vice President & GM of HGTV Digital. Brecht’s winning entry, “On Track” featured the repurposing of rail lines and rail cars in her home town of Lancaster, SC, hit so hard by the economic depression that in 2008, it was named the most vulnerable town in America by Forbes.
Anderson University Interior Design major Misty Brecht has been recognized by The American Society of Interior Design for her initiative to improve conditions in her hometown of Lancaster, SC. The national competition was sponsored by HGTV. The competition’s theme REPurpose For Today challenged design students to create an environment that helps address a current social crisis through design of an existing structure.
“There is no better way to demonstrate design’s real world impact than to highlight the work of our design students’ solutions to some of our world’s most important social issues,” - Randy Fiser
ASID EVP and CEO
In the essay supporting her design, Brecht described her initiative: There are not enough jobs for all the displaced workers. Surrounding cities with better economic conditions offer relief, but the commute can prove too far and too expensive for many people. Providing a less expensive and more sustainable method of travel allows more people to work outside of Lancaster, thereby decreasing the unemployment rate. Underutilized existing railroad systems provide the possibility for the much needed link for transportation from Lancaster. This connection opens the potential for many more job opportunities in a wider variety of career fields and, thereby, lowering the unemployment rate. Reopening the rail lines for passenger travel and reusing existing passenger cars is a sustainable solution to utilize the existing track infrastructure to its fullest potential, getting both the trains and people’s lives back on Track.

AU names new VP for student development
During Fereira’s 13-year tenure as dean of students at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, he helped create an exceptional student development program, which earned him the reputation as one of the top student development professionals in the country, Whitaker said. “We fully expect him to create nothing less than a model student development program to fit Anderson University’s emerging reputation as one of the leading Christian universities in the nation,” Whitaker said. Fereira says he joined AU because he believes in its mission of offering students an outstanding academic education in a Christian environment. As the new VP for student development, he plans to foster relationships between university departments that help students, create a student development program that’s custom-fit for Anderson University, and forge a strong staff that explores and shares new ideas.
A nationally known leader among student development programs became the new vice president for student development at Anderson University this spring. Jim Fereira, a 28-year student life veteran who formerly served at a 6,300-student university in Minnesota, started work at AU in March. He fills the position left vacant by AU Vice Provost for Academic Advising Bob Hanley, who oversaw student development at the university for 18 years. AU school officials say Fereira’s professional values and experiences make him a perfect fit for Anderson University. Fereira, 53, believes that effective student development programs work in tandem with academic programs by helping students prepare emotionally and spiritually for their careers. “He embodies the values and commitments of Anderson University and is an excellent fit for our institution,” said AU President Evans Whitaker.

Since 1999 Fereira’s leadership contributed to the success of Bethel’s student development programs, which serve about 3,000 traditional undergraduates. He has overseen the school’s counseling center, health services, disability services, residence life, leadership development, and intercultural and international student services. Fereira also transformed the university’s student government from a club into an organization that Bethel students take pride in during regional and national student government conferences. In addition to serving at Bethel, Fereira worked for nearly a decade as dean of students at North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, overseeing athletics, campus ministries and outreach, counseling, health services, residence life, multicultural diversity, and new student and student leadership programs. During his tenure at North Central University, he also served on the president’s cabinet for two years. Fereira, a native of central Illinois, began his career as a resident director at Evangel University in Missouri, where he oversaw a 216-student resident hall for seven years. He and his wife Linda have two teenage daughters and a nine-year-old son.

College of Business equipped recent grad to lead ministry that helps girls in Honduras
The initial trip was exploratory with a goal of determining a framework for aiding the girls. The AU team decided that the first priority should be to teach them financial literacy and computer skills. Following that first trip, the team returned to campus and developed a plan to create a financial curriculum and the organization of a campaign to obtain computers through donations.
By Don White Thanks to an AU ministry led by College of Business grad Chase Heatherly, girls in Honduras are breaking the cycle of poverty, pursuing careers in business, furthering their education, and spreading the Gospel. The ministry Project Talitha Cumi teaches girls the financial and business skills to overcome their impoverished backgrounds, Heatherly said.
“The name ‘talitha cumi’ sums up the ministry’s mission,” he said. “It’s a Hebrew term from the Bible, Mark 5:41. In the scripture, Jarius’s daughter has died, and he asks Jesus to heal her. Jesus tells the girl, ‘talitha cumi,’ which means ‘Little girl, I say to you, rise up.’ The ministry has that very mission: to raise up Honduran girls from the ‘dead’ life of poverty, share the Gospel with them, and allow them to be successful.” The project measures success in small increments. Most of the girls haven’t typed on a computer keyboard. Now, Heatherly says, they are using them daily in the computer lab created by the AU project team. Three years ago, Heatherly joined Enactus, a campus group devoted to teaching free enterprise. Through it, he became involved in Project Talitha Cumi and eventually assumed the leadership role. He has traveled three times with AU teams to Las Esperaza, the city in Honduras where the ministry is based.

When the AU contingent returned to Las Esperaza, it focused on executing its plan. “On our second trip, we taught the girls about basic financial matters, such as budgeting, price comparisons, and balancing checkbooks,” Heatherly said. The AU team also set up a computer lab with equipment donated by AnMed Health System and Anderson County. The lab has 10 computers and a printer. Heatherly led the effort to acquire the decommissioned, but operable, computers from Anderson County. With the help of the computers, the project has continued to progress. Now the emphasis is on teaching the girls entrepreneurial skills. The team is working with the girls to establish
a business that sells coffee and woven baskets through an e-commerce website to customers in the United States. The goals for this phase include building the website and solving shipping and packaging issues. As the project has moved forward, so have the lives of the girls. Twelve have graduated and are university students, business owners, and employees of other ministries. New girls enter the program constantly; 30 are currently in the ministry. Heatherly said the skills he learned at AU have contributed significantly to the success of the

project. His business professors preached the value of initiative, which helped guide him to lead the mission trips. Exposure in the classroom to different business disciplines, ranging from accounting and economics to statistics and business law played a critical role, as well, he said. Heatherly is happy he chose AU. “I had offers from other schools, but AU was the best fit for me because of its excellent academic reputation and Christian surroundings. My success is rooted in that environment and in the solid education that I received through the College of Business.”
As Presidential Intern, Davis, a 2013 graduate of AU who majored in business at AU, will also work to complete a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Anderson and plans a career in marketing.
“I can’t think of a more qualified person to serve as the first Presidential Intern. Mr. Davis has represented the University extremely well as an undergraduate student and will be an even more valuable resource in this new role. Not only will he gain priceless experience in working with our leadership team, but we will benefit from his talent, perspective and enthusiasm.”
Anderson University president Evans Whitaker has announced the first recipient of what will become a coveted internship position at the institution. Calvin Davis, a recent graduate of Anderson’s College of Business, will work closely with the president, the vice president for presidential affairs and the senior leadership team of the University during the one-year internship. The Lexington, S.C. native will gain valuable experience and a rare insight into the executive level of one of the South’s most rapidly emerging comprehensive universities.

Trojans in motion! Anderson’s successful women’s basketball program is under new leadership and some fascinating new athletes are on campus
Garrity named women’s basketball head coach Anderson University Athletic Director Nancy Simpson announced in early August that former Clemson assistant coach and UNC Wilmington associate head coach, Jimmy Garrity, has been named the women’s basketball coach.
Garrity graduated from Elon in 1989 with a degree in business administration and marketing and later earned a Master’s in sports administration from St. Thomas University in Miami, Fla. in 1990. Garrity carries a wide array of athletic experience, beginning as an intern with the Miami Heat in 1989 and NC State in 1990. Later, he was hired as the Director of Ticket Sales and Services at NC State in 1994. He would eventually serve as Field Representative for the Wolfpack in 1998.
Garrity, who spent last season at Clemson University and the previous ten years at UNC Wilmington working in three different positions within the basketball program, replaces Jim Brunelli who spent five seasons at AU prior to be being hired at Gannon University. At Clemson, Garrity was responsible for the team’s guards, scouting, practice planning, game scheduling, community service and alumni relations. Garrity was also the coordinator for the Lady Tiger website and monitored the academic progress of the student-athletes. Before spending the 2012-13 season with the Tigers, Garrity was the Director of Basketball Operations at UNCW for both men’s and women’s basketball, beginning in 2002. The Elon University alum was with the men’s program until 2006 and the women’s team until 2007, before being hired as an assistant coach with the women’s team in 2007. Working as an assistant until 2010, Garrity was promoted to Associate Head Coach of the Seahawks in 2011. In that season, UNCW advanced to the second round of the WNIT.

Garrity is married to Jenny Garrity, who served as UNCW’s women’s tennis coach for 13 seasons. The couple have two daughters Kacey, 16, Carly, 8, and a son Corey, 11.
Taylor, USDWNT captures gold in Deaflympics Finishing the tournament with an undefeated 5-0 record and allowing just one goal, Anderson University women’s soccer player Madison Taylor and the United States Deaf Women’s National Team defeated Russia in the gold medal match, 2-1, to bring home the gold medal from the 2013 Deaflympics. Entering the six-team tournament, Team USA and Russia were slotted as the favorites of the tournament, meeting in the championship game of the World Deaf Football Championships last year in Turkey. The U.S. capitalized on two second half goals and maintained the pace

The first place finish is Taylor’s second-straight major championship, being a part of the 2012 team that won the World Deaf Football Championships. Madison got a start in every match on the backline and was a major part of claiming four shutouts for the tournament. For the five matches, the Americans outscored their opponents 27-1. “Winning that gold was unbelievable,” Taylor said. “Receiving the gold was a proud moment for all of us. We wanted to win so badly. Before the game the nerves where setting in, but once we stepped onto that field nothing mattered but winning that gold. We are all so beyond proud to represent the USA and we can’t wait to get our fourth medal next time.”

Lough signs contract with Danish soccer team In late summer, Former Anderson University women’s soccer player Adrienne Lough signed a contract to play professionally for Taastrupt FC of Denmark’s First Division in Taastrupt, Denmark. Lough, who played in 76 games in her AU career with 69 starts, became the first AU women’s soccer player to play professionally. With the Trojans, Lough was part of a backline that ranked seventh in the country in shutout percentage and broke the school record with 10 shutouts in 2012. Lough will be playing alongside two members of the Danish Women’s National Team and will be fulfilling a lifelong goal.
Head Coach Samar Azem was a major part of Lough’s professional contract, as she set up the tryout with the Danish club. Lough was able to take full advantage of the opportunity was able to make the squad for the 2013-14 season. “I began training by doing three-a-day training work outs with two sessions a day doing ball work or small sided pick up soccer, and one utilizing training methods Coach Azem implemented during my career at Anderson,” Lough said. “It was very important for me to take a chance with any opportunity I was given.” The language barrier at the tryout was overwhelming and intimidating for Lough, but she was able to communicate with the other players before the given drills so she could focus on her game and give a full effort. “Before the tryouts I was definitely nervous of course,” Lough said. “Trying out in Denmark and taking the flight out there on my own to achieve my dream reminded me of how important it is to take opportunities that are given to you and not only do your best, but to appreciate the beauty of a new opportunity in life at the same time because anything is possible if you are willing to put in the work.” Lough was confident heading into the tryout because of the training and the goals she set while she was at Anderson. The centerback scored two goals and notched five assists all from the backline in her four-year career, but this was a new challenge for her career.
“It was my dream to play professional soccer in Europe since I was little,” Lough said. “Especially after I traveled to Italy with my Woodbridge Woman’s soccer team (club team) and I was asked to stay and play there, but decided to get my degree and play at Anderson University first instead.”

“Playing at Anderson prepared me to take on new challenges. I have always had high expectation for myself, however Coach Azem set an even bigger bar for me to reach and it allowed me to push myself even harder,” Lough said. “I have learned a lot from the AU program, as they continuously used their passion for the game to challenge me in our team training sessions, and I’m grateful for that.” With the contract completed, Lough is looking forward to this new experience very few players are able to accomplish.
athletic update men’s soccer Looking to feed off an undefeated mark in its last four matches from a season ago, Anderson University men’s soccer seeks its fourth-straight South Atlantic Conference tournament championship in 2013. Even though AU is slated to return four starters from a season ago, head coach John Murphy brings in 18 new faces to a team that went 4-4-1 in conference play last year. With multiple tough road matches to go along with an always strong conference slate, the upperclassmen will have to mesh quickly with the youth of the roster to improve on last season’s 6-10-4 overall mark. Key non-conference contests against Flagler, UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion tie into tough road SAC matches against last season’s regular-season champion Mars Hill and always tough Wingate combines one of the toughest schedules in the region. Goalkeepers: With the graduation of Lukas Hesse from last season, Murphy will be looking for a new starting goalkeeper for the season. A trio of keepers enter the season with one already being on the roster in redshirt freshman Devon Ashy (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann). Ashy will be joined by freshmen Bo Hoag (Stuttgart, Germany) and Grant Strickland (Columbia, S.C./Brookland-Cayce), as all the goalkeepers will compete for playing time in 2013. Defense: Despite junior Lars Zimmerman (Malente, Germany/Gymnasium Eutin) leading the team in goals playing as a forward last season, Murphy will move the Zimmerman back to his natural position, centerback. Zimmerman will be joined by senior Stefan Veljovic who started in all 20 matches a season ago. Filling in the last spots on the backline will be a challenge, but with juniors William Treichler and James Somerville to match with newcomers Oliver Wright (Auckland, New Zealand), Paul Von Hinuber (Wuerttemberg, Germany), Alex Delpy (Munich, Germany), Chandler Lindler (Columbia, S.C./Chapin) and Sam Brown (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine), Murphy is excited about his potential of the defense.
Midfield: Juniors Mattias Schyberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Atletica Gymnasiet) and Martin Brain (Beckley, England/Tunbridge Wells Grammar) are the lone returners to the midfield after combining for 30 appearances and 27 starts a season ago. Murphy would like Schyberg to play more of an attacking position, so Brain may be the lone upperclassman in the middle. Newcomers Henrique Gazzi (Caxias do Sul, Brazil), Brad Du Plooy (Greenville, S.C./Oakbrook Preparatory) and Johnny Fana (Ponte Vedra, Fla./St. Joseph Catholic) could see significant minutes. Forwards: With Zimmerman making the move back to defense, AU will be seeking new goal scorers for the upcoming season. The lone forward that returns to the roster is junior Corbin Bowers who saw action in just 10 matches in 2012. With the amount of newcomers Murphy has brought in, a new look to the front line is expected. To go along with Schyberg upfront, Andre Carle (Sydney, Australia), Benoit Torres (France), Bernd Muxel (Schoppernau, Austria), Luke Jones (Anderson, S.C./Belton-Honea Path) and Aaron Robinson (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian River) could see roles at the position this season.
women’s soccer With an early exit in last season’s South Atlantic Conference tournament looming in the back of the minds of the Anderson University women’s soccer team, the Trojans look to bounce back in 2013 with a trio of senior leaders, a couple of Division I transfers and a pair of international players. Anderson was eliminated in the opening round of the 2012 SAC Tournament by Catawba, a team it defeated during the regular season. The Trojans closed the season with a 7-7-3 record and a 4-3-2 mark in SAC play. A lot of new faces will be on the pitch for head coach Samar Azem, as she returns just four players from a season ago and welcomes 17 newcomers in one of the biggest and impressive recruiting classes in program history. Goalkeepers: Senior workhorse Kaitlyn Neipp returns to the roster for her fourth and final season with the Trojans. Neipp has been a four-year starter with 52 appearances in a black

returnee to the midfield. The Brecksville, Ohio native started 16 matches and tallied two goals to go along with 27 shots, the second most on the team. The midfield will be Anderson’s youngest position, as eight of the 10 midfielders listed on the roster are freshmen. One name that stands out is Azem’s first recruit from outside the United States in Paige Gowans-Smith. Gowans-Smith comes to the Upstate from Lancashire, England where she played club soccer for Liverpool Ladies FC. Transfer Emily Cowan also adds experience to a midfield after competing for Cleveland State for the last two seasons.
and gold uniform. Last season, the Anderson native posted seven shutouts, which tied her for the most in the SAC. Neipp has played in over 4,658 minutes and carries a career goals against average of 1.22. Behind Neipp will be freshman Sadie Lancaster who comes to AU from Celina, Texas. Lancaster succeeded on the club level with Andromeda FC where she once posted 28 consecutive shutouts. Defense: Azem’s team will bring back just one member off its backline from a season ago, as Heather Hooper leads the outside of the defense. Hooper appeared in 10 matches as a freshman, including her debut in the 4-0 win over Erskine. Despite the lack of returnees to the defense, Azem likes the experience with Division I transfer Faith Johannes (UNLV) and international player, Anna Masdottir (Iceland). AU also welcomes freshman Madison Taylor who brings some international experience playing with the United States Deaf National Team, winning goal in the 2013 Deaflympics and 2012 Deaf Football Championship. Midfield: Senior Olivia Scalzitti, who played her first season at AU last season after beginning her career at Ohio Dominican, will be the only

Forwards: Senior Krystal Goss returns as one of top goal scorers in Trojan history, as she enters her final season with 15 goals under her belt. Goss paced the team with eight goals and seven assists to accumulate 23 points which tied for fourth in the league. Like the rest of the positions, there will be new faces joining Goss up top, as Azem will look for goals from freshmen Helena Moore, Nicole Bulding and Alaina Gay. Moore, who scored 14 goals during the 2012 season at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, S.C., will add speed and an excellent attacking ability to a front line that will look to add pressure to backlines throughout the season.
volleyball If game experience and potential is any indication, the Anderson University volleyball team is on the eve of a successful and exciting campaign in 2013. Head coach Craig Mosqueda, who is entering his fifth season at the helm of the Trojan program, boasts a veteran squad that returns eight players with a wealth of experience, including four juniors who have already combined to play in nearly 900 sets in just two seasons and started nearly 60 matches apiece during their first two seasons. The Trojans are poised to capitalize on their potential as they begin the 2013 campaign. With a talented nucleus returning to the AU lineup, Mosqueda and the Trojans will be looking to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish in the South Atlantic Conference after seeing 17 contests reach at least four sets a year ago.
Staying focused and finishing will be a key for the Trojans. Setter: Mosqueda will again rely on Meghan Cautero ( Jr., 5-9, S) to set the table for her teammates this season, with the junior having seen action in all 60 matches during her first two seasons wearing the Black and Gold. She already ranks fifth all-time in the school record books with 1,810 assists after handing out more than a thousand assists last season alone. The Naples, Fla. native should move into fourth place early in the season, needing just 47 assists. She posted a career-best 55 handouts at Lenoir-Rhyne a year ago and recorded at least 30 assists on 22 occasions last season.
Middle Blockers: Replacing former standout Tiffany Rowe, one of the most prolific middle blockers in AU history, will be a challenge but Mosqueda expects junior Hailey Pittman ( Jr., 5-10, MB) to again play a key role in the middle for the Trojans. Another returner, Cameron Ohls (So., 5-11, MB), turned in an impressive spring campaign and will compete for playing time along with incoming freshman Jessica Harris, a 5-foot11 middle blocker from Franklinton High School in North Carolina. Another newcomer, Allison Gaminde, has played in the middle during her entire career, but Mosqueda sees the left-hander also garnering playing time as a rightside hitter.
Pittman is formidable threat both offensively and defensively after finishing last season 10th in the conference with 329 kills and was second on the squad with 38 total blocks. She ripped 15 service aces and displayed the best accuracy on the team, leading the team in attack percentage on seven occasions, including a team season-high .550 versus Barton in early September. Ohls played in 13 matches last season, including 20 sets, and notched eight kills and two block assists. Outside/Rightside: Shannon Gillespie ( Jr., 5-10, OH) earned Second-Team All-SAC accolades following her second consecutive stellar season a year ago. The Fishers, Ind. native gave posed problems for opponents, ranking sixth in the conference with 355 in kills and leading the Trojans in kills 10 times. She concluded last season needing just 119 kills to move into the top-10 in AU’s all-time record books and holds the school record for attack attempts in a single match with 82 at Lenoir-Rhyne. Kelley Lacey ( Jr., 5-9, RS), will hold down the rightside spot as well as attack from the outside after seeing action in 29 matches and recording 139 kills, 38 total blocks and 18 service aces last season. The Trojans will welcome Priscilla Irizarry to the court after the Moca, Puerto Rico native redshirted last season, providing an additional weapon in Mosqueda’s arsenal. Gaminde will see playing time on the rightside as well as in the middle after earning SCISA State Player of the Year honors twice during her prep career. A pair of talented and athletic newcomers, Tinsley Hallman and Alicia Lewis will enhance the Trojans’ depth at outside hitter in 2013. A 5-foot-11 transfer from Gardner-Webb University, Hallman led her Wando Warriors to a 33-6-1 overall record during her senior season, while Lewis, a true freshman, helped lead her Warner Christian Eagles to three consecutive state championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Defensive Specialist/Libero: Another team leader, Alix Hooker ( Jr., 5-6, DS/L), along with incoming freshman Taylor Underwood, will be patrolling the backcourt this season, with Mosqueda again being able call upon Lacey to play the libero spot after the versatile junior ranked

third on the team last season with 314 digs. Hooker has played in every match during her two seasons with the Trojans and led the team with 552 digs last season, while ranking 54th in the nation in digs per set. The Plant City, Fla., native tied the school record with 32 digs in a single match at Lenoir-Rhyne last September.

rest of the South Atlantic Conference will look to break Mars Hill’s stranglehold on the conference championship, as the Lions have claimed 16 consecutive SAC titles. women’s cross country The Anderson women’s cross country team will depend on gifted newcomers as well as several talented returners, as the Trojans will look to return to the top of the South Atlantic Conference this season. AU came up just shy last season in its bid to become the first team to claim a third consecutive league title since Mars Hill won five straight SAC championships in the late nineties. Anderson snapped Lenoir-Rhyne’s two-year win streak with the Trojans’ first league title in their SAC debut in 2010. The Trojans followed up by claiming their second consecutive conference crown in 2011 before finishing third a year ago. No SAC team has claimed three straight championships since Mars Hill claimed the five consecutive SAC crowns, while Carson-Newman notched three championships earlier in that decade. Eighth-year head coach Randy Greer will look to replace the departed Emily Eckroth, who paced the Trojans in five events last season, by merging five returners with five newcomers to the squad.
Led by Second-Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection Parks Edwards, the Anderson men’s cross country team will look to overcome youthfulness and taste success this season.
Paced by a pair of juniors – Sydney Hazel and Madison Guest – along with seniors Hannah Robles and Rachel Westberry and sophomore Devan Fisher, the Trojan squad expects to be in the hunt for their third SAC title in four years.
Eighth-year head coach Randy Greer will look to blend a trio of seasoned veterans with four talented newcomers this fall, as Anderson and the

Anderson Alumnus honored for preserving military history
“They could pick up a book and read certain areas of wars and certain things that have happened there but here we can give them everything with every artifact that’s here,” Buchanan told Greenville television station W YFF, which covered the ceremony.
Anderson alumnus Cecil Buchanan has long sought to preserve the history of those in the Upstate of South Carolina who have fought for their country in conflicts throughout history. His efforts recently earned him the ultimate recognition – the naming of the museum he has worked for so tirelessly in his honor. Buchanan was one of the earliest male students at Anderson, graduating in 1948. In a ceremony this summer, the Greenville Post 3 of the American Legion officially named the museum after Cecil D. Buchanan. More than 200 people attended the dedication ceremony. Back in the 1990s, local legion members met and brought their collections of war history and decided those items should be displayed. That idea turned into the American Legion War Museum and many credit Buchanan for creating it. “Because of your hard work, even in times of peace, we will have a constant reminder to bring our children and grandchildren so they never forget that what they enjoy today, some people gave everything they have to make sure they enjoy it,” Congressman Trey Gowdy said in his keynote speech. Buchanan, a Korean War Veteran and Greenville’s first county manager, said the museum gives the community an exclusive look into the country’s past and gives children an education they’re not taught in schools.
Gov. Nikki Haley awarded Buchanan the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor a civilian can receive. The former U.S. ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins, presented it to Buchanan. He also read part of a message Haley wrote to Buchanan. “South Carolina is blessed by your tremendous work and community service. Thank you for your efforts to make our state an even better place to live, work and learn.” When asked what he thought about the museum dedication, Buchanan said, “Actually I said no at first. I said I don’t deserve it.” He also said, “Well, honestly it makes me feel like I got a lot of friends.”

in memoriam Linda Miller Morris, ’67, died April 15. She had been the President/CEO of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities (ARMHC) for the last 19 years. Linda was the visionary behind the strategic development and growth of the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House programs, the cornerstone of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. Linda is credited for the success of the two-phased House expansion which launched in 2005 with the capital campaign to build a new 50 room Ronald McDonald House in order to increase capacity by 300% and purchase property for Phase Two. The Phase One fundraising goal was exceeded in 2.5 years, and the new facility opened June 5, 2008 near Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. As a tribute to her many contributions and commitment to ARMHC, the Board of Directors named the Administrative Wing of the new House on Gatewood Road in her honor. She was currently leading the effort to complete Phase Two with a new 31 room Ronald McDonald House on Peachtree Dunwoody Road near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. Primarily due to her efforts, the capital campaign for Phase Two has now exceeded half of the campaign goal. Prior to joining the staff of ARMHC, Linda held the position of Director of Community Relations for Scottish Rite Children’s Healthcare System, one of the

leading pediatric hospitals which merged in 1998 with Egleston Children’s Healthcare System, to become Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Before joining the staff at Scottish Rite in 1989, Linda was President of the hospital’s 500 member auxiliary and led the group in its first fundraising efforts. During her tenure at Scottish Rite, the hospital purchased and donated a home that would become the second Ronald McDonald House, which opened in 1994. As a key member of the development team, Linda’s role included raising major funds for the construction and soliciting significant in-kind products and services for the new Ronald McDonald House, as well as encouraging volunteer and community support. She also guided the formation of volunteer groups to support both the new House and the first Atlanta House established in 1979. Linda is a past member of RMHC’s Global Advisory Council. She was a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Friends Volunteer Organization, Decatur, GA Rotary Club, and Peachtree Presbyterian Church. In 2005 Linda was selected by Atlanta Women Magazine as a candidate for Woman of the Year. In 2009 she was recognized by The Piedmont Review as one of Atlanta’s Charitable Leaders. In July 2011, she was selected by Business to Business magazine to receive their Women of Excellence award given to Atlanta’s most outstanding professional women. 2013 annual report The pages of this magazine are full of dramatic accomplishments at Anderson University by our students, our faculty, and our administration. None of what we do would be possible without the support of those who have stood by us through the years with generous support. You who are the benefactors of this university understand our unique mission – you believe in that mission – and you are willing to provide the resources we need as we stretch toward the goal of becoming the force for good in the lives of our students and in the world. The 2013 fiscal year (concluded in June) was the fourth largest year in our 102-year history in total gifts received by the institution. A total amount of $5,182,977 was received during the year. One highlight of the year was the significant number of new endowed scholarships established as well as significant contributions made to existing endowed scholarships. These scholarships are critical to the growth of our endowment and growing them is one of the institution’s greatest long-term needs. More than $1,097,000 was added to the endowment during the fiscal year, bringing our overall endowment to approximately $34 million. Of course, fundraising for the largest single capital project in our history is well underway. The campaign to build a new student center and dining
hall to serve our students has reached the $10 million mark toward a goal of $15.2 million. Our desire is to break ground for this historic project next fall. In order to do so, we will need to reach at least the $12.5 million mark. The remaining funds for the 80,000-square-foot facility will be raised during the construction phase. We were especially pleased to see a dramatic increase in the Trojan Club funds that support all of our NCAA Division II athletic programs. To get an idea of just how much that support has grown, consider that in the 2008-2009 fiscal year, we received $15,187 in contributions and this past fiscal year we received $80,653. More than $30,000 in restricted gifts was also received during the year. You may have read that we are in the process of revising and expanding our plans for our athletic campus. Our tennis and softball facilities will have to be relocated to the Athletic Campus during the construction of our student center, so there is no better time than the present to be involved in assisting our athletic programs, especially since they are competing at such a high level. Let us take the opportunity to give each of you in the pages that follow a heart-felt “thank you” for standing with our university as we grow. We treasure our relationship with you and always do our very best to be good stewards of your support.

Update on Gifts and Pledges for Student Center Campaign The entire Anderson family is excited about the progress being made in the Student Center campaign. If fundraising continues to grow in the early part of 2014, a groundbreaking date can be set and our students will finally see the work begin that will transform the campus for the next 100 years. We hope that if you have not been a part of this momentous moment in our history that you will consider doing so. To learn more about the new Student Center,
