Sidney’s work captures the most evasive of images, colours and textures: the effects of the transparent elements, water and air, over time. He scours the city for overlooked corners of buildings, the details, colours and life of abandoned architectural pockets. These are the places where water has penetrated and has, with its vital force, transformed the base material, be it stone, concrete, wood or iron into a deep and nuanced range of colours and textures. Once an interesting landscape in miniature is found, the artist returns repeatedly to the same location at different times of day, in different lights to contemplate the colours and the effects. In the studio, from memory, he paints a composite recollection of these complex, atmospheric places and surfaces in the process of transformation. Looking at the canvases, one is drawn into deep landscapes from which one imagines a boat emerging, or thick willowy foliage draping into the watery environment. These are highly contemplative, absorbing paintings, which display a profound understanding of colour, materials and textures.

Justin Sidney Justin Sidney (b. 1974) trained as a painter at the Lauder College in Dumferline, Scotland. From 2006 to 2009 he lived in The Netherlands where he studied Dutch art and developed his practice. The misty, water laden atmosphere and the plentiful waterways of the country informed his choice of subject matter and deeply influenced the effects he achieves in his paintings. Sidney’s work focuses on the overlooked, neglected and abandoned parts of the built environment and how the passage of time transforms these surfaces. The focus of his attention is texture and time-worn matter: beach glass, cracked and weathered wood, abandoned buildings, rusted metal and corroded surfaces. His work is often perceived as abstract, however, each painting draws from reality and is influenced by various sites and locations, textures and colours. Sidney paints from memory, allowing the complexity of surfaces, the atmosphere of the tiniest of details or ‘micro worlds’ as he calls them, which most pass unnoticed but which feed Sidney’s imagination. The paintings are created on the studio floor using a sophisticated mix of acrylics, which allow him to gradually build up the surface of the painting in many layers before judiciously allowing pools of water to form before using a rag, a brush or improvised implement to create the required effect. Looking at the canvases, one is drawn into deep landscapes from which one imagines a boat emerging, or thick willowy foliage draping into the watery environment. These are highly contemplative, absorbing paintings, which display a profound understanding of colour, materials and textures. The artist lives and works in London.
