Named for the blonde jokes we all know and love, this exhibition looks at the various social views behind these stereotypes. It will open your eyes to the stereotypes we hear daily and the prejudices behind these harsh words we sometimes ignore.
The Archaeological Museum in Zagreb marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of one of Croatia’s greatest writers, August Šenoa, with this commemorative exhibition. It is less well known that he was also a notable numismatist who, in his lifetime, had collected a significant number of coins, dating from ancient to modern times. The exhibition will showcase 90 coins as part of his impressive collection.

An exhibition that gives a closer look at the orphans, the poor, vulnerable, and neglected children in Croatia at the turn of the 19th century, amidst the legal, educational, and social context of the period. The display was named after two of the most famous orphans in Croatian children’s literature – Hlapić and Gita, the main characters of the Croatian classic ‘The Marvellous Adventures and Misadventures of Hlapić the Apprentice’, which can be regarded as Croatia’s ‘Oliver Twist’. The exhibition also marks a celebration of the first publishing of this popular book by the famous Croatian writer Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, in 1913.
Birds represented in every colour, shape, and size, their beauty captured in various objects used throughout human history, will be showcased at this exhibition. The featured items have been classified into six groups which cover the periods from prehistoric to early modern age, showing the neverending link between nature and people. A retrospective exhibition by this Zagreb artist, who specialised in metalwork and jewellery design. Having held numerous national and international exhibitions, Pavliša was especially devoted to researching the extremely difficult technique of igniting enamel on copper. Besides primarily designing artistic jewellery, she also worked with enamel on large formats such as sculptures, painted surfaces, and reliefs.
This themed exhibition tries to shed a light on the role and rich artistic heritage of this noble Croatian family who left a big mark in Croatian culture between the early 18th and mid 20th centuries. The exhibition will showcase over a hundred works of art (paintings, sculptures, prints, etc.), as well as the history of the family castles, estates, and its prominent members (most notably the first Croatian female composer Dora Pejačević) who were also known as art collectors and patrons.

This festival is iconic in Croatia since it is not only the oldest festival of popular music in this part of Europe, but it is also just four years younger than its idol, the San Remo Festival. The main emphasis has always been on the songwriters and songs and not so much on interpretation. Today, its focus is on young artists who are just beginning to leave their mark on the Croatian music scene.
Two amazing artists unite to perform works by some of the greatest Italian composers of the Baroque period. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and R. Schumann.
A garden is seen by many as an escape, a sanctuary, a private return to nature. The uplifting of the spirit definitely occurs here between two women with Bach’s (There is no soundness in my body) in the background. The setting is that of a garden, a place of reconciliation in the context of the piece.

This exhibition will be showing the work of performance artist Vlasta Delimar from over the past thirty-five years. Internationally recognised, through her numerous works she has examined the status of women in society as social and creative beings, and has focused on their multiple roles as housewife, mother, artist, lover, etc. During this exhibition, Delimar will perform two performances: ‘A call to socialise’ and ‘My Temporary Home.’ The second performance will take place in the exhibition hall of the museum, which will temporarily become the artist’s home where she works and lives. This unique and extraordinary performance is a must-see!
The Cravat Regiment is the Croatian light cavalry regiment from the 17th century, known for their uniforms and picturesque scarves after which the ‘tie’ was named. Their ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremony takes place in the Upper Town, which begins before noon with an attractive procession of the Guard and their weapons. The ceremony involves a formation of thirteen soldiers, four horsemen, armourers, trumpeters, drummers, flag bearers, and a commander.
This scrumptious festival is focused specifically on the promotion of national cuisine and wine. With up to 10,000 visitors attending last year’s premiere, this year is bound to be a hit. Special events include workshops, along with cooking and wine shows. This delicious festival will leave your mouth watering!

As soon as the April sun shines upon the city, Zagreb’s streets become reminiscent of age-old traditions with historical figures dressed in costumes, folklore ensembles, promenade concerts in various city parks, street performers, and ‘kumice’ (market ladies) strolling about. All of which evoke the warm spirit of the city and its people, just as it used to be!
Nasta Rojc will celebrate not one, but two anniversaries in 2014! The 130th anniversary of her birth (1883), and the 50th anniversary of her death (1964). She was one of the first women to receive equal footing, among her male colleagues, in Croatian modern art. The exhibition will include 100 pieces of work from numerous museums, as well as a large number of works from private collections. You go girl!

A comprehensive opus by the Croatian 20th century artist Edita Schubert will for the first time be presented to the Croatian public. She was known for innovative artistic approach, thus most of her art works were of experimental and conceptual character. The bequest of her art consists of several hundred works from the 1970s and 1980s, many of which have never been exhibited before.
Steep yourself in the history of this majestic castle, located in the outskirts of Karlovac, in the small town Novigrad. Proclaimed as a cultural monument in 1953, restorative work has been ongoing at Frankopan castle over the past ten years. In addition to the exhibition, educational workshops, and lectures, organised visits to the castle are on offer, catering to larger groups.
This exhibition is aimed at exploring freedom and equality in education. It focuses on the fundamental thoughts of Jacques Rancière and how education should be a joint creation between teacher and students, and not simply a transfer of knowledge. Take a look at how art and visualisation can be used to increase interest in education! Museum of Contemporary Art, Avenija Dubrovnik 17, phone 00385 1 605 27 00, www.msu.hr
