In an inspired mixture of video, collage and narrative, the artist explores the history of Spain from unusual angles. Ivan Meštrović, ‘a sculptor amongst sculptors’, created hundreds of works in his career and this exhibit marks 20 years since the establishment of a foundation in his name. In that period, new acquisitions have been collected from his opus and fourteen of these will be presented to the public and art experts for the first time. Croatian bishops, monks, nobles and seamerchants were common clients to these great masters of Venice. They ordered and purchased artworks which defined the lively humanist culture and lifestyle along the Adriatic. Renaissance works that touched hearts in Croatia can be seen along with anthological paintings on canvas and wood made from 1450-1590.

Landscapes alive with colour, luxuriant depictions of scenes from Croatian history, sensitive portraits, still life... Mate Celestin Medović, one of Croatia’s most treasured artists, had a wide-ranging oeuvre and this is a chance to see about 200 of his works. See what influenced the modernist stance in Croatia and why in the 1960s Zagreb was the most interesting centre of modern art in Central and South-East Europe. A geopolitical presentation and a wide spectrum of items cover the most important fields of life, art, culture and politics, vindicating the city’s culture and cosmopolitan feel. This may seem a tad spooky but on the contrary, we have an exhibit into the funeral rituals and cemeteries of Zagreb dating back centuries. See original items, epitaphs, photos, films, press prints and more found from archaeological research that delve into death wills, graves, the blessing of the sick, obituaries and a whole ‘macabre’ more.

One of Europe’s leading badminton events with world ranking points up for grabs which are vital for Olympic Games qualifications. Over 30 nations and 200 competitors in attendance. When Doctor Coppélius makes a life-size dancing doll that a local villager falls head over heels with, you have the makings of a joyous and amusing ballet. Contemporary ballet artist Youri Vámos offers a new story to the famous music by Léo Delibes, turning it into a grand and glowing modern day musical.

Zgraf is Zagreb’s international triennial of graphic design and visual communications, organised by ULUPUH, the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts since 1975. As part of the event there will be an exhibition in the ULUPUH Gallery. If you’re a fan of Swiss design, you must catch this exhibition by typographer and graphic designer Niklaus Troxler. He’s the winner of last year’s grand prize from the Zgraf exhibition of graphic design, which is why he’s putting on a solo show here this year. An exclusive exhibition revealing the intensive use and history of pianos in Croatia. Gašparović, a pianist and professor at the Zagreb Music Academy, presents pianos from the ‘golden age’ by Viennise builders made before or around 1850 through to the end of the 20th century.

ULUPUH (the Society of Fine Artists of Applied Arts) has been gathering fashion designers for years and this is one section of 50 members or so who regularly exhibit at biennials, themes and selective exhibitions. Whether in full force or not, they are there and take action in promoting and vindicating their role in fashion design. You have to see it to believe it! This is fashion frenzy! It is held twice a year and gives visitors an insight into the upcoming season by presenting collections by renowned Croatian and international designers. Sponsored by Dreft, names such as Missoni and Renato Balestra have appeared in the past. Don’t miss the fashion exhibitions, promotions, seminars, blogger conferences and parties.

Tourist information

Zagreb’s public transport has a comprehensive system of tram and bus lines. Both transport systems have daily services beginning at 4-5am through to 11-12pm. Several lines operate throughout the city but at less regular intervals; for all schedules and daily timetables visit www.zet.hr. Identical tickets are used for both bus and tram journeys and are best purchased from kiosks costing 8 kuna each. It is also possible to buy tickets from drivers for 10 kuna, however this does not include the new modern trams. From the moment you board and insert the ticket in the automatic stamping machine, it is only valid for a one-way journey lasting 90 minutes maximum. A daily ticket costs 25 kuna and allows one day’s unlimited travel until 4am the following day. This could prove to be a good choice. If you would like to go sightseeing in the Upper Town, you can buy a ticket for 8 kuna and ride in the popular Uspinjača (Funicular), the 66m lift which is scheduled every 10 minutes and operates from 6.30am to 10pm.

This exhibition shows work by a diverse selection of photographers of all age ranges and using multitude forms of expression. It aims to turn our attention to current issues which might be overlooked had they not attracted the steady eye of the camera lens. South of the River Sava is Novi Zagreb, which grew up after the 2nd World War. Though immensely practical in design, Novi Zagreb has many green spaces, including the park around Bundek lake. This is the location for Floraart, a large exhibition of flowers which will delight you with its myriad colours and heady scents. For these ten days, Zagreb’s streets and squares are awash with performers treating throngs of passers-by to the thrills, spills and surprises of street performance. Music, comedy, magic, song, circus, art… you name it, if it’s weird, wonderful and fun, it’s here!

This fun fest is one for the rock and alternative crowd. Though the bands confirmed at the time of going to press included monsters of rock Slayer, Mastodon and Gojira, there are sure to be mellower sounds too. Past acts have included Primal Scream, The Fall and The Lemonheads, as well as legends of the local alternative scene. Two pieces by two of the world’s finest contemporary choreographers, Marco Goecke and Uwe Scholz, set to music by Bach and Schumann. Ever since their first shows they have been praised by European audiences. Both ballet works will be presented by the famous European ballet artist Giovanni di Palma, with original scenography. Vintage cars and old-timer vehicles take over the city with the aim of preserving mechanical culture. There are driving skills competitions and a parade of classic vehicles being driven throughout the city centre on the second day. Great for photos!

Wood has been used to build cottage-type homes for centuries in Croatia. This exhibit looks at the preservation, renovation and maintenance of the wooden houses of the Posavina region, especially as they have great potential in becoming tourist attraction. An exhibition of unique wooden furniture will also be presented by Luka Jelušić and Hrvoje Vulama. Welcome to Croatia’s largest open-air festival which has attracted top musical acts in the past including Massive Attack, Franz Ferdinand, Nick Cave and hundreds more. Stay posted as the festival’s 7th edition is sure to surprise, there is also a festival camp, games, projections and so much more… The FIA-CEZ Championships Car Rally is coorganised by the Delta Car Club and the Dugo Selo Auto Club. It attracts rally fans to the famous Martin Breg (Martin Hill). Feast your eyes on spectacular fireworks painting the sky over Bundek lake in colours. If you don’t like loud noises, bring some earplugs! Fiction, sci-fi, horror, thriller, suspense, animation, drama and experimental film are the genres that appear here. This summer event is an open-air film festival set up at the atmospheric locations of Gradec and Tuškanac. Some sense that the old legends of Zagreb such as the Witch from Grič and the Bloody Bridge may be reappearing here, hehehe! Every three years, this event presents a crosssection of the best of Croatian sculpture since the previous Triennale. Artists compete for one of four prizes, while the winner of the Grand Prize gets a solo show at the next Triennale. This year you can see the work of last time’s winner, Predrag Pavić. The craft of lacework in Croatia is centuries old (the intertwining of threads and lace into a decorative item) and was common amongst peasants. UNESCO has enlisted the lace craft in Croatia under its list of non-material heritage, and this exhibit celebrates this milestone and in doing so, presents some fantastic textile pieces in the process. From classical music through jazz to folk, true music lovers are in for a treat in the Zagreb summertime. The strains of music reach you as you round every corner of the old parts of the city, filling the night with romance. Zagreb Summer Nights present both well-known artists and young performers, who bring great spirit and modernity to the proceedings. 17.2.2012. 23:55:12

A week-long festival encompassing dance, theatre, visual arts and work which transcends traditional boundaries, with a focus on artists from Croatia and the surrounding region. This year’s theme is climate change, and the highlight is Performance Night. The plenary session of the International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts will host over 550 artists from more than 50 countries. There will be 15 performances by Croatian artists as well as presentations, panels, working groups and a supporting programme of performances. Zagreb will be the World Cat Capital in October and all breeders, exhibitors and lovers of cats are welcome. The event will be held at the beautiful new Zagreb Arena and during the time-outs, an interesting and rich program will be held on the main stage. There will also be small sculpting and art workshops for children, gala events and much ‘miaow’ more. This is a platform that questions the use of public space in our city. Events take place in the city’s parks, streets and squares and include visual arts, music and drama, as well as multimedia and more. The topical issues of capital versus culture, consumption, and the co-existence of space are reviewed.

Croatia’s finest national folk dance ensemble LADO will bring cheer to your Holy Season with a vocal and instrumental performance pertaining to Christmas. Their spectacular choreography and harmonious undertones have travelled the world over. Not to be missed, and the event takes place at the Saint Anthony of Padua Church, at Zagreb’s Sveti Duh. Zagreb is a colourful and cosy place to be in the run-up to Christmas. The city’s favourite gathering places, its squares, are enlivened with live music of all kinds. Of course, everything is decorated, and stalls sell winter warmers like spicy sausages, mulled wine and Zagreb specialities. A Christmas Fair displays products made by Croatian artisans: toys, jewellery, art, food and drink - which all make for perfect gifts. All the venues of the Student’s Centre at Savska 25 will be jam-packed with this traditional event which promotes the works of artists across all fields (theatre, dance, performance, film, fine arts, music and design). It’s a stage to exemplify one’s talent, knowledge, skill and craft. Free entry! Just one take: montage, cutting and splicing are banned here! This format encourages an exciting approach to all kinds of genres. This festival has spawned similar events elsewhere, but the Zagreb one is the original and best. A fun event with loads of going on, and guests from around the world wondering who will win this year’s Grand Prix. Viva le Paris! The holy ground of modern fine art became a stronghold in the early 20th century for Croatian painters to master their talents. See works by Bukovac, Račić, Kraljević, Šohaj, Dešković, Meštrović and many others. 230 paintings, watercolours, prints and sculptures can be seen featuring Parisian landscapes, cafes and other sources of inspiration. International success has seen Mladen Stilinović travel the world and present his form of conceptual art. He has attended many Biennials and his works can be found in renowned museum collections such as the Vanabbe Museum in Eindhoven and Moderna Museum in Stockholm. Over 500 of his works in different media will be presented here.
