General Information Principal’s Message On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to welcome all new and returning families to Cottonwood Elementary School. We hope that by working together, our students will find school an enjoyable, meaningful and rich experience. Our school is staffed with a team of dedicated, committed professionals working hard to meet the needs of all students. We strive to create an environment where students feel safe, comfortable, and respected. This school year will certainly bring new opportunities and challenges for you and your children. I invite you to become involved in your child's education by volunteering in the classroom, joining one of the parent/school committees, and participating in events and activities that occur throughout the school year. This home-school relationship is only strengthened by your involvement. Active school parents are the key and truly make the biggest difference! First Day of School The first day of school for the 2011-2012 school year will be Thursday, August 18th for grades 1 through 5. Kindergartners will begin school on Monday, August 22rd.

School Hours All-Day K-5th: 8:35 – 3:35 Afternoon Kindergarten: 12:35 – 3:35

Open House Cottonwood Elementary will have a ―Meet Your Teacher Night‖ for grades K-5 on August 16th from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Classroom Placement Classroom teacher assignments will be mailed on Friday, August 12th.

Fees Enrollment Fee Kindergarten: First through Fifth Grades: Technology Fee Kindergarten (1/2 day): 1st—5th and All-Day K:

Proof of Residency Cottonwood Elementary requires 2 (two) proofs of residency for all new students, as required by the Board of Education. Proof of residency may be a housing contract, or rental agreement AND a utility bill.

Birth Certificate It is Andover School Board policy that all students entering kindergarten or first grade shall provide a copy of their birth certificate.

Immunizations & Health Assessment All children are required to have current immunizations (Kansas law) and a current physical examination (USD 385 policy). Please provide the school with a copy of your child’s immunizations. Andover USD Board of Education policy requires that all students entering kindergarten have a physical examination and all students moving from out of state, who are under the age of 9 years, must also have a physical examination.

Bus Transportation The transportation director determines bus routes, drivers and time schedules. Bus routes are not usually finalized until a day or two before school starts. Any questions regarding the busing should be directed to the Transportation Department at 218-4621.

PTO Cottonwood has an active Parent Teacher Organization. Please watch for more information in the Meet Your Teacher Night packet and in future newsletters.

Newsletters Communication is crucial between school and home. The classroom teachers send newsletters home with the students periodically. The end-of-the-month newsletter from the office will contain the next month’s calendar. Information is also available on the district website (www.usd385.org). PTO also send out school updates every other week, via e-mail.

Handbook The Family Handbook has information regarding attendance policy, bus rules, health/medicine information, recess rules and much more. Please take time to familiarize yourself with the school policies. The handbook is available on our website www.usd385.org or you may request a printed copy. Food Service

The safety of our students is always a priority. We review our procedures and try to develop the best solution for all involved. In an attempt to keep the flow of traffic moving and make sure our students and parents get to and from school safely, please observe the following: If you are dropping off or picking up your student, you will have two choices. 1.) Park in the parking lot and walk to the building to meet/deliver your student. Please use the crosswalk for safety purposes. 2.) Car line Drop Off ---Enter the drop off line from Andover Rd. This is a one-way entrance-only drive. Drive forward as far as possible. Let your child off in a timely manner,

as other students are being dropped off and need to get to school on time. You must exit onto Allison Street either left or right. Pick Up---Enter the pick up line from Andover Rd. This is a one-way entrance-only drive. Drive forward as far as possible. You must exit onto Allison Street (south end of parking lot) either to the left or right.

Each student has a Food Service account and payment can be made to this account at enrollment or by sending Traffic Safety money in an envelope, with your child, to the school Do not park in the marked Fire Lanes during the school office. At morning attendance, the students choose the day. Red zones should only be used for emergency option of school lunch they want, or report that they are a vehicles. ―cold‖ lunch. Do not speed. The safety of children and adults is our primary concern. Prices: Lunch $2.05 Cottonwood staff are trained and required to supervise Breakfast $1.50 arrival and dismissal. Breakfast and Lunch Menus The breakfast and lunch menus for the next month will be sent home to all families on the last day of the current month. The menus are also available on the district website (www.usd385.org).
