Student Social Media Policy Public Media: Public media refers to technologies used to communicate messages and whose mission is to serve or engage a public. Public media domains include print outlets, traditional broadcasts, and digital. When utilizing any public media outlets, students are expected to conduct themselves responsibly as members of their respective class, school, district and community. Social Networks: Social network sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and other digital platforms and distribution mechanisms facilitate student communication with other students. Participation in such networks has both positive appeal and potentially negative consequences. It is important for a student to be aware of these consequences and exercise appropriate caution if they choose to participate. Students are restricted from using any non approved online social network sites and digital platforms during the school day or from any school or district computer of any kind. Facebook and similar directories are hosted outside of the Andover Public Schools’ network. Violations of district policy (e.g. harassing language, drug or alcohol policy violations, copyright infringement, etc.) or evidence of such violations in the content of online social networks or digital platforms are subject to investigation and District policies. Violations are also subject to the authority of law enforcement agencies. It is incumbent upon students to be aware of District and building regulations, as well as state and local laws. Ignorance of these regulations does not excuse students from adhering to them. Guidelines for Students District guidelines are intended to provide a framework for students to conduct themselves safely and responsibly in an online environment. These guidelines will help students to use Social Media safely and effectively. 1. Be careful with how much and what kind of identifying information you post on social networking sites. Virtually anyone with an email address can access your personal page. It is unwise to make available information such as date of birth, social security number, address, phone numbers, class or work schedules, bank account information or details about your daily routine. All of these can facilitate identity theft or stalking. Facebook and other sites provide numerous privacy settings for information contained in its pages; use these settings to protect private information. However, once posted, the information becomes property of the website and also be shared with other people by your “friends.� 2. Be aware that potential current and future employers often access information you place on online social networking sites. Consider how information you post on Facebook or similar directories potentially provides an image of you to a prospective employer. The information is considered public information. Protect yourself by maintaining a self-image
that you can be proud of years from now. 3. Be careful in responding to unsolicited e-mails asking for passwords or PIN numbers. Reputable businesses do not ask for this information electronically. 4. Do not have a false sense of security about your rights to freedom of speech. Understand that freedom of speech is not unlimited. The online social network sites are NOT a place where you can say and do whatever you want without repercussions. 5. Any inappropriate activity or language in violation of the above prohibitions, including first time offenses, is subject to investigation and possible disciplinary action by Andover Public Schools, as well as civil authorities. 6. Be smart. Be respectful. Be human. 7. Be authentic. When you post or comment in social media always state your name. 8. Be aware that no use of any school photos, student photos, district or school logos or tag lines, is allowed without prior authorization from the District Office. 9. It has been suggested that you shouldn’t send anything via Social Media or email or texting that you wouldn’t want to appear on the front page of the paper. Nothing in the world of Social Media remains private. 10. In the end, be mindful of your online presence. Step back and think about what you're about to post online. 11. Keep in mind that district and school guidelines that govern behavior also govern behavior online that may spill over into the school day.
