STREET WESSEX LEAGUE ONE PROGRAMME OF THE YEAR 2020/21
ANDOVER NEW STREET v ALRESFORD TOWN TUESDAY 25th JANUARY 2022 KICK-OFF 7.45PM
JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s North Hants Cup Semi-Final match against Alresford Town. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Magpies, including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Alresford Town that have made the journey to Andover this evening and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on tonight. This evening’s game gives us an opportunity to take a break from league action after what has been a manic couple of weeks with two games a week certainly taking its toll on some of the players recently. We have come through a tough set of fixtures unbeaten and with an important three points at leaders Bemerton and also an important draw at Folland Sports last Saturday, especially with us playing the second half with ten men. I thought we deserved something from the game on Saturday as we still posed a threat up front and Luke Hooper fully deserved his goal after working tirelessly up-front and also the work rate of our midfield was second to none.
We will of course be treating tonight’s game as any other and will prepare for it in the same way. It’s an opportunity to reach a cup final and we are also the holders of the cup. We have been fortunate to retain this cup over the years with our last final against Alresford at the Camrose. Alresford come into this game on a bad run of results, with their last win against Blackfield & Langley at the start of December and they lost 60 to high flying Brockenhurst on Saturday. They will come into the game looking to rectify recent results and have a few familiar faces in their squad that will certainly test us this evening. After tonight’s game we face Fawley here on Saturday as we look to maintain our promotion push. Again, it will be another difficult game, but most are now as we enter the business end of the season. Your backing here at Foxcotte Park has made this place a real fortress, so please turn up the volume, sing your hearts out and most of all, enjoy the game.
We also defended really well against the extra man with some important blocks and a couple of good saves by Weathers as well to keep us in the game.

welcome ALRESFORD TOWN
It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Alresford Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Magpies make the journey to Foxcotte Park for the first time since a 5-0 victory in April 2019, with a Lukas Swaby-McCartney first halfstrike being followed up with second half goals from Paul Coventry, Samuel Bert and a brace from Luke Rae. This evening’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with the prize of a cup final appearance at stake for the winners. The Street have won the North Hants Cup on the last two occasions it was contested with a memorable 3-2 victory over tonight’s visitors the last time it was contested in March 2019. Jamie Coleman gave the Street an early lead, before Paul Coventry equalised and then Sam Doswell gave the Magpies the lead, 5 minutes into the second half. Callum Sweeney equalised with a long range free-kick and then Magpie keeper Jordan Tewkesbury was sent off before substitute Ilyas Warshow scored a fantastic winner. Alresford started the season with a 0-0 draw with Horndean before a 1-0 home defeat to

Alton and a 4-2 away defeat at Portland rounded off August. Back in league action and the Magpies saw off Hamble Club 4-3 and then drew 1-1 with Baffins Milton Rovers. A 2-2 draw with Hamworthy was followed up with a 2-1 win at Shaftesbury. Alresford then crashed out of the league cup with a 5-1 defeat at Folland Sports and further league defeats to AFC Stoneham and AFC Portchester didn’t improve matters. A 5 league game winning run started with a 3-2 win over Bournemouth and further victories over Amesbury Town, Christchurch, Fareham Town and Hythe & Dibden. Before it was halted with a 4-0 away defeat at Hamworthy. Blackfield & Langley were defeated thanks to a Kristian Andonov double. December then saw defeats to Moneyfields and Bashley and a 5-3 defeat at Alton didn’t start the New Year off to a good start but they did pick up draws at Cowes Sports and US Portsmouth, both matches ending 1-1 before a 6-0 defeat against Brockenhurst last Saturday. The Magpies reached this stage of the competition with a 5-3 victory over Tadley Calleva, thanks to a Ilyas Warshow brace, Marcio Neves, substitute Jake Adams and an own goal.

bluffers guide Alresford Town FC... THE CLUB Football in Alresford has been found back to the late nineteenth century, but the formation year of the present ALRESFORD TOWN FC side is shown as 1989. Starting in the now defunct North Hants League, Town moved immediately into the Hampshire League before withdrawing in 1996. They returned, again from the North Hants League, in 2000 and then came the 2004 move; they’ve remained members of our league since and have been a top tier side since 2007. The original Alresford Town was established in 1898 and were members of the Winchester & District League. The modern club was established in 1989 and joined the North Hants League. After finishing as runners-up in their first season, they moved up to Division Two of the Hampshire League. The club were Division Two runners-up in 1990/91, securing a second successive promotion to Division One. However, after finishing second-from-bottom of Division One in 1994/95, they were relegated back to Division Two. At the end of the following season the club left to re-join the North Hants League. Alresford were North Hants League champions in 1999/00 and returned to Division Two of the Hampshire League. After finishing second in Division Two in 2001/02 they were promoted to Division One. In 2004 the Hampshire League merged into the Wessex League, with the club becoming members of the new Division Two. The division was renamed Division One in 2006 and Alresford were runners-up in 2006/07, earning promotion to the Premier Division. After five seasons in the lower-mid table, the club were Premier Division runners-up in 2012/13, a season that saw them win the Hampshire League (beating AFC
6
Bournemouth in the final), the League Cup and the North Hants Senior Cup. They were Premier Division runners-up again the following season, also retaining the League Cup and the North Hants Senior Cup, as well as winning the Aldershot Senior Cup. In 2018/19 Alresford won the Southampton Senior Cup, beating AFC Stoneham 3–0 in the final. The 2019/20 season was abandoned due to the coronavirus pandemic with Alresford top of the Premier Division. FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM WHITCHURCH ALRESFORD – THE TOWN A vision of pastel perfection, Alresford (pronounced Allsford) is a handsome Georgian town of colour-washed houses, riverside walks, specialist shops and the UK's capital of watercress farming. The town’s history is punctuated with fires, despite the abundance of water in the area. The buildings that you see today rose from the ashes of the great fires of the 17th century. If you want to find out more about Alresford’s history and inhabitants, pick up a copy of the ‘Millennium Trail’, a self-guided walk that links together footpaths with illustrated boards around the town. The Mid Hants Railway, known locally as the Watercress Line, can be found here too. Hop on board one of the powerful steam locomotives for the 10-mile trip to Alton, or simply take in the sights, sounds and smells of the superbly restored station. NOTABLE PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH ALRESFORD Artist Graham Ovenden, novelist and dramatist Mary Russell Mitford and of John Frederick Peel Rawlinson, lawyer, politician, and goalkeeper for Old Etonians F.C. in three early FA Cup Finals, were all born in Alresford.

HOLD THE
Back Page WITH NON-LEAGUE PAPER REPORTER DAVID RICHARDSON The phrase ‘magic of the cup’ is synonymous with the FA Cup’s early rounds but in recent weeks it has been used alongside the FA Trophy. The competition for the top four tiers of nonLeague football is now entering the last 16 and those clubs will be starting to dream of the Wembley final in May. While some National League sides may devalue the Trophy in place of league success and promotion to the Football League, the knock-out competition, which has been played since 1969, provides a valuable opportunity to lower-league clubs. Just look what it meant for Needham Market last weekend winning a dramatic penalty shootout 8-7 at top-flight Yeovil Town, who have created plenty of their own cup history. Market boss Kevin Horlock described it as a ‘special day’ for the Step 3 side. Elsewhere, Cheshunt, also playing at the same level as Needham, won 3-0 at National League South club St Albans City while Morpeth Town came out on the right side of a seven-goal thriller against Step 2 Boston United, winning 4-3. Tonbridge Angels upset National League King’s Lynn Town too. And it’s not even the victories that can provide memories. Larkhall Athletic, of the Southern League Division One South, enjoyed a trip to National League high-flyers Stockport County on Saturday. It was the furthest the club had been in the competition, and they made sure to make the most of it by staying over on the Friday night AND Saturday to enjoy themselves postmatch. The Larks supporters travelled well too with 169 in attendance at Edgeley Park.

Larkhall manager Ollie Price, no stranger to a big cup tie having played against Norwich City in a televised FA Cup first round game for Paulton Rovers, told The NLP of the club’s excitement before the Stockport fixture. “It’s an absolutely incredible draw, it’ll be a fantastic day for the club, and everyone connected,” he said. “This is what it’s all about. I know they say the magic of the FA Cup, but this is the magic of the Trophy!” The FA Trophy is made extra special by the FA’s persistence to play the final at Wembley on Non-League Finals Day, also featuring the FA Vase which always delivers a brilliant spectacle – the last six finals have produced 24 goals between them! Some supporters may say the final should be held at a smaller, more intimate ground but speak to any manager or player and they will say they want to be walking out under the arch. We’ve been treated to so many great finals over the years, not least most recently when Step 3 Hornchurch beat Hereford. It’s given many clubs from the same level hope they can go all the way too. Brackley Town’s penalty victory over Bromley was also dramatic, so too was North Ferriby United’s upset of Wrexham in 2015. The memories go on and on. So, the Trophy is still special, still ‘magic’ and it was a pleasure to have Needham Market’s upset taking centre-stage on our front-page last weekend – sorry Yeovil fans, you had your turn last month in the FA Cup!
