ANDOVER NEW STREET v ANDOVER TOWN TUESDAY 22nd MARCH 2022 KICK-OFF 7.45PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Welcome back to you all to Foxcotte Park for our re-arranged midweek fixture with Andover Town. This evening we’re under the floodlights for what promises to be another keenly contested encounter. The Town have been on an excellent run this season that sees them pushing for promotion and just two point separates the two teams, so the Street will need to be on their mettle to ensure their unbeaten run at Foxcotte Park in the league continues. There’s plenty inside this evening’s issue including a match report on the previous game against New Milton on Saturday and the thoughts of both manager Jamie Coleman and Football Chairman John Ward, and much more besides. Remember, if you have any feedback on the programme, please do get in touch with us. Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another important match against Andover Town in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Town including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Andover Town that have made the short journey to Foxcotte Park tonight and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on this evening. Our last home game saw us take on New Milton and we collected all three points courtesy of Ross Cook’s terrific header. We made a slow start and were indebted to strong defending against the wind first half, with New Milton putting us under extreme pressure at times. We did create a couple of chances and grew into the game and were rewarded when Cooky met Reece’s perfect ball into the box to head home. The second half saw us make a couple of changes and Mikey Davis nearly doubled our lead when his shot from outside the area beat the keeper but unfortunately hit the bar.

4

“OUR LAST HOME GAME SAW US TAKE ON NEW MILTON AND WE COLLECTED ALL THREE POINTS COURTESY OF ROSS COOK’S TERRIFIC HEADER.”

After this we lost Hibbo for 10 minutes and had to grind out the result and actually nearly doubled the lead late on when both Cooky and Shane Lock had half chances that were blocked by their keeper.

Focus It is vital we focus on tonight’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us, as we look to continue to move up the table. We know that the Andover Town players will be really up for this game, they will be looking to continue their impressive run of results. They have showed over the course of the season so far why they are a good side, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it

everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park and to keep pushing for promotion. After tonight’s game we face Newport IOW in another massive fixture, before we travel to Romsey next Tuesday night and then play our final home game against Ringwood Town. However, back to tonight. Please support your team. Remember when you support us you are supporting yourself because everyone is part of this team. Enjoy the game!

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good evening and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Andover Town, here tonight for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable evening with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into a strong position for promotion with our hardfought victories over Totton & Eling and Verwood Town and an impressive battling display in the draw with Bemerton over the last few weeks.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Tonight’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Andover will be looking to continue their fine run of form that

6

sees them right in the promotion race . They arrive here on the back of an impressive 2-0 win on Saturday over Romsey. We will of course need to be at our very best tonight if we can maintain our own promotion chase. With continued activity on and off the pitch at the moment putting the club in the local spotlight we have been inundated with companies interested in becoming sponsors, guests and partners of this fine football club. The current success of not only the first team but the Swifts and ladies’ sides is not only down to the players on the pitch but the financial support off it. If you’re interested in any sponsorship or would like to discuss any corporate partnerships with the Football Club please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Following our win over New Milton on Saturday, I attended the Ladies semi-final match on the Sunday, where they put in a great battling performance against Eastleigh Reserves and were unfortunate to lose 1-0. Despite this defeat, the team can take a lot of positives from their first full season and along with our Swifts side, been a credit to the club.

We have come through a run of tough games, but we still have further difficult games ahead. Starting with tonight’s game and with the likes of Romsey, Newport (IOW) and Downton still to come in March. It makes for an exciting end to the season. We have finally moved up from 5th position into the top 3 and have a real opportunity to go up this season with a strong squad, that in my opinion, could finish in the top half of the Wessex Premier.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another huge game as we take on Andover Town in another important game as we continue our pursuit of promotion to the Wessex Premier.

“WE ARE TAKING EACH GAME AS IT COMES AND KNOW THAT WE HAVE A LOT OF TOUGH GAMES, STARTING WITH THIS EVENING WITH ANDOVER TOWN.”

Tonight’s game comes quickly after our hard-fought win over New Milton Town on Saturday. Although we made a slow start, we gradually worked our way into the game and scored a brilliant goal through Cooky, after a great ball into the box from Reece. I missed the game on Saturday due to injury and I genuinely hate missing games, but I was thrilled that we were able to keep another clean sheet. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week.

We are now into the business end of the season with our final seven games of the season. We are taking each game as it comes and know that we have a lot of tough games, starting with this evening with Andover Town.

Following tonight’s game, we face another tough game at home to Newport IOW on Saturday and with Andover Town playing Bemerton Heath on the same afternoon, the race for promotion may be a little clearer after those matches. All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on and keep the pressure on the other sides around us. I don’t need to tell you to get behind us tonight. We know you will, and we’ll do all we can to get another win for you in return. Enjoy the game.

There aren’t many sides in our division who can miss four players and keep themselves unbeaten, and it says a lot about the strength of squad here. www.ansfc.co.uk

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT TUESDAY WHEN THEY TRAVEL SOUTH TO FACE BOTTOM SIDE TOTTON & ELING AT THE MILLER PARK

TOTTON & ELING WHO? Totton & Eling, aka the

Miller’s, from Miller Park, are the Street’s opponents on the 22nd of February. Totton lost 5-2 last Saturday against mid-table Whitchurch United and the Miller’s currently sit bottom of the league in 20th place with 13 points. HOW THEY DOING? The Millers are currently on a losing run of 14 matches, in fact you have to go back to early November for their last point, which was a 1-1 home draw with East Cowes. They also drew their previous game 2-2 at home to Fawley. Their last win came against Infinity with a 5-1 score line, Alex Sawyer scoring 4 and Ben Roles also finding the net, but this is likely to expunged from the league following the Southampton side’s resignation from the league. Totton’s most recent defeats have included heavy defeats to Bemerton Heath (8-0), Laverstock & Ford (4-0), Folland Sports (7-1) and Millbrook (4-0). They narrowly lost 2-1 at Ringwood Town with Joseph Steel scoring the Miller’s consolation goal. A 3-0 defeat away at Petersfield Town with a brace from Aaron Akoman-Ehikpa and Kieran Alcock scoring the goals for the Rams. A recent 2-0 home defeat to Ash United, the Green Army scorers were Luke Cairns and Zac Aubrey-Simpson doing the damage before their defeat to Whitchurch on Saturday. The Jam Boys scorers were Ryan Long x2, Nathan Lynch, Grant Powell and Craig Rutledge.

10

HOW TO GET THERE? Miller Park is 44

minutes or 25 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A3057 towards Stockbridge. Continue along the A3057 through Stockbridge and Kings Somborne and all the way to Romsey. At the turn left onto The Hundred/B3398. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Bypass Rd/A27/A3090. At Ower Roundabout, take the 1st exit onto A36. At Ower Interchange, take the 2nd exit onto A326. Use the left lane to take the A36 slip road to Totton/Town Centre/Ower. Turn left onto Salisbury Rd/A36. The ground, which can be found next to AFC Totton’s ground is on the left.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

our last match at Test Park came in October 2019 in the Wessex League Cup and saw the Street lose 1-0 thanks to an own goal. We also won 3-0 in the Hampshire Senior Cup in August 2019 thanks to a brace from Shane Lock and a Ilyas Warshow goal. Our last league visit at Totton saw the Street claim promotion to the Wessex Premier in April 2018. A Zach Neve hat-trick was backed up with goals from defender Wade Crisp and Casson Spencer to ensure a 5-0 win and guarantee the Street promotion. The Street have already faced Totton & Eling already this season. Back in November the Street won 8-1 here are Foxcotte Park, Luke Hooper, Reece Rusher and Cameron Thatcher all scoring twice with Max Allen and Shane Lock also on target.

welcome ANDOVER TOWN

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Andover Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Town make the short journey across Andover for the first time since their 5-1 defeat in the North Hants Cup last November. Ben Emans gave Town an early lead, but the Street fought back with goals from Reece Rusher, Shane Lock, Lee Morris, Harry Lawton and Josh Jeffery sealed the win and progression to the semi-finals. This evening’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with Andover Town coming into the game two places behind the Street, after their 2-0 victory over Romsey Town on Saturday. So, a win will be important for both sides to maintain their promotion aspirations. Town got off to a perfect start this season with a 3-0 home victory over Fawley AFC. This was followed with a 3-3 draw at East Cowes and then another draw at home against the Street when first Cameron Thatcher and then a late Ross Cook equaliser earned the Street a point. A 4-3 defeat at Downton followed despite Michael Owen levelling and then Josh Bertie putting the Town in front. A crazy second period

14

saw Downton level and re-take the lead to 4-2 before Musah Stamburi got a late consolation for the Town. A 4-2 home win over Folland Sports in the Hampshire Cup was then followed by a 3-1 home defeat against the same opposition. Further wins against Millbrook, Baffins Milton Rovers, Bashley (on penalties), Infinity and Hythe & Dibden, with only the 4-1 defeat to Street in the FA Vase rounding off September. A 4-2 defeat at Shaftesbury in the League Cup was the Town’s only defeat in October as they went unbeaten with wins over Romsey Town, New Milton Town, Fleet Spurs and Ringwood Town. The month ended with a 2-2 draw at Verwood Town. Michael Owen and David Jerrard gave Town a 2-1 lead, but Oliver Davies equalised with 20 minutes to go to earn the Potters a point. Town maintained their league unbeaten run of 15 league matches with wins over Totton & Eling, Ash United, Petersfield Town, Infinity, Laverstcok & Ford and East Cowes through November and December. The start of 2022 saw the Town lose 3-2 at Petersfield (3-2) but claim wins over Fawley, Whitchurch Utd, Fleet Spurs and Downton before two narrow defeats at Folland Sports and Laverstock & Ford. Four further victories followed including a 7-1 win at Ash United.

bluffers guide Andover Town FC... THE CLUB The club was established by staff from Andover College and Sparsholt College in 2013 after Andover F.C. had disbanded; the two colleges approached Test Valley Borough Council about taking over Andover's Portway Stadium to use for their football academy programmes, with the aim of also forming a senior club. The club were elected to Division One of the Wessex League. During their first season they were involved in a Hampshire Senior Cup tie at Brockenhurst which finished 0–0 after extra time; in the subsequent penalty shootout, 29 consecutive penalties were scored, with Brockenhurst eventually winning 15–14. This was later confirmed by the Football Association as an English record (and possibly a world record) for the highest number of consecutive goals scored in a penalty shootout. At the end of the 2013–14 season Andover were Division One runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. The following season saw them make their debut in the FA Vase, and in 2015–16 they played in the FA Cup for the first time. In 2017–18 the club were Premier Division runners-up, potentially earning promotion to Division One West of the Southern League. However, the club turned down promotion and were relegated to Division One of the Wessex League as punishment. The club has since steady progression under the stewardship of Ron Bertie as manager, being assisted by Jason Holmes. This progression has seen them become real promotion challengers this season and they are currently on an impressive 15 league game unbeaten run dating back to their last defeat to Folland Sports in late August.

ANDOVER – THE AREA The town is on the River Anton, a major source of the Test, and is situated alongside the major A303 trunk road at the eastern end of Salisbury Plain, 18 miles (29 km) west of the town of Basingstoke, both major rail stops. It is 14 miles (23 km) NNW of the city of Winchester, 35 miles (56 km) north of the city of Southampton and 65 miles (105 km) WSW of London. Andover is twinned with the towns of Redon in France, Goch in Germany, and Andover, Massachusetts in the United States. Watermills have formed an important part in Andover's history. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded six mills. Rooksbury Mill is one of the few surviving mill buildings in Andover. The existence of Rooksbury Mill is first recorded by name in the 17th century. Functioning as a flour mill, it has passed through a succession of owners. Milling ceased in the early 20th century, after which the mill building went through a series of uses including being used as a small theatre. Test Valley Borough Council sold the building in 2002, shortly after it had been devastated following an arson attack. The new owners, Anthony and Sarah de Sigley, restored the building in 2003, rebuilding much of the original structure. A large flour mill, McDougalls, is close to the railway station. The FA conducted their assessment at Portway. Indeed, Chris won the coveted award .... A STREET... …AND A BLUEBIRD

A number of players have served both the Street and the Bluebirds down the years. George Baxter, Michael Horne, Dave Tasker, Michael Weatherall, Luke Dempsey, Liam Hibberd, Mark Keogh, Sam Mills, Alfie Moulding, Adam Pearson, Matt Scott, Dean Smith, McAulie Stubbs, Owen Trapnell, Joe Wright, Craig Blakeman, Gary Thorne, Zach Hine, Reece Rusher, Claudio Herbert and Alex Dockree are names familiar to both sets of supporters. One name that does stick out is Callum Sweeney. Callum started at Street, where he played sporadically over the course of a few seasons and made 10 appearances for the and scored 1 goal. It was then in the 2016-17 season that he played for 3 local sides in one season. He made 11 appearances for Street, 10 for Whitchurch United, scoring twice and finally 6 appearances at the Portway for the Bluebirds. He returned to Foxcotte Park for the successful 2017-18 season, where he played a key role in the Street obtaining promotion to the Wessex Premier and also win both the North Hants Senior Cup and the Andover Open Cup. Sweeney would make 41 appearances that season and scored 18 times including a crucial goal against Christchurch late in the season and he would also have a hand in many of the goals that season.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE? Today will be the 11th meeting between the Street and the Bluebirds and will be the fifth at Foxcotte Park. The Street have a slight edge against today’s visitors, winning five of the 10 matches. One has ended all square whilst Andover Town have won the other four. That sole draw came earlier this season at the Portway Stadium with 369, the highest attendance of the season so far this season, witnessing Andover Town taking a two-goal lead into half-time, through Josh Bertie and Michael Owen. The Street would fight back late in the second half with first Cameron Thatcher scoring and then Ross Cook equalised late on, when he fired home from the edge of the box following a Street corner. Nathan Primus was sent -off for Andover Town between the two goals going in. The Street have also played Andover Town in two cupties this season. The first saw Daryll Phillips make an outstanding debut for the Street, when he scored in the first 30 seconds of the match and would go on to score an

20

The following season saw him make a further 39 appearances for the Street and although the campaign would see them relegated, Sweeney’s performances would ensure silverware would be secured again with both the North Hants and Andover Open Cups retained.

Callum Sweeney

Callum would move from the Street to Tadley Calleva in the middle of the 2019-20 season, where he would make 12 appearances and scoring 4 times for Tadley. In 2020-21, he would go back to the Portway for a second time and would make just 9 appearances that season, scoring twice. This season Sweeney is applying his trade at current league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins. He has made 23 appearances to date, scoring 4 goals – including 1 penalty. amazing hat-trick in the 4-1 victory at the Portway Stadium. Town captain Brendon Holmes scoring a late consolation for the Bluebirds. The other cup-tie would take place last month in the North Hants Senior Cup and again the Street were victorious, even though they would have to come from behind after Ben Emans had put the Town ahead in the first half. The Street responded and would score twice late in the 1st half through Shane Lock and Reece Rusher. The second half would see Town go down to 10 men when JJ Tucker was sent off for the visitors. The Street would take advantage with further goals from Lee Morris, Harry Lawton and Josh Jeffery. At Foxcotte Park the Street have won two of the four games. The Street’s other win here came in the league in 2019 when a penalty from Callum Sweeney was cancelled out by a free-kick equaliser from Zach Hine, before Jake Curtis scored a fine header to win the three points. The Town won the first two meetings at Foxcotte park back in 2014 (0-2) and 2015 (0-9) in the League Cup.

Alex of Andover HE’S ONE OF A SELECT GROUP OF PLAYERS THAT HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH STREET AND TOWN. MIDFIELDER ALEX DOCKREE REFLECTS ON THE UPS AND DOWN DURING HIS TIME AT FOXCOTTE PARK AND THE PORTWAY STADIUM. “No, I think the uncertainty of the season not going the full distance played a key part, we were always wondering if the game we had next would be our last!” The Street would end the nightmare 2020-21 season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Downton, which would see Street miss out on promotion by 1 point on the points per game calculations made by the League over the last two curtailed seasons. It was probably one of the toughest seasons in Dockrees career. But more of that later – let’s start at the beginning. Everyone likes a hometown boy done good. The same can be said of Alex, although he didn’t begin his career in football at one of the Andover sides.

“Don’t worry I could talk about football all night,” says Alex Dockree as we usher our apologies for interrupting his Thursday evening. As the phone call ticked around the hour mark Dockree has reminisced about his playing career, as the conversation wandered from his time as a youngster at Whitchurch United, to joining his hometown club – Andover Town to finally playing for Street during two Covid-19 hit seasons. “It’s been amazing to recall my playing career!” he says. Dockree is excited, it’s the evening before the last day of term and Alex, who’s main profession when he isn’t playing football is a teacher, is already looking forward to the Christmas break. The former Street midfielder reflected on last season’s disappointing early ending, and we asked if the team had a hangover from the 201920 seasons unscheduled finish with 10 games to go?

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“I started out playing men’s football for Whitchurch Reserves. I signed up in the New Year of 2008, as soon as I was eligible to play,” explains Dockree. “I had just turned 16 and wanted to step up away from youth football. “I played just under a dozen games for the reserve side that season and even got one goal but can’t remember who it was against or what it was like.” What he does remember was the following 2009-10 season as it marked his first team debut for Whitchurch, even though he played very few reserve matches that season. “There is a very good explanation for that. I was playing for Basingstoke Town Academy U19’s that season but was also dual signed with Whitchurch so when Basingstoke’s season ended, I was able to play for the Jam Boys. I had a good season with Basingstoke, and it helped set me up for the future.” Alex’s first appearance for Whitchurch was an important one too – “It was the Andover Open Cup Final against Otterborne. I can remember going into the changing room and some of the guys were like ‘who’s this kid?’ but Marc Rees stood up

going home to play rugby, so I wasn’t missing out by going home and I was also getting paid. I could get a train home from Cardiff for £8 then and I would make the most of getting my washing done at home. I’d also did coach up at Andover Youth on a Saturday morning, so my weekends would be fairly busy with football.” “Whitchurch were in a progression stage and building for the future, the aim was to get into the Wessex Premier. We had some talented players like Paul Coventry and Brett Denham in the squad, but we finished in 8th position.”

for me and said, ‘no he’s quality, we’ll be ok tonight with him in the side.’ Well, I came on and endorsed what Marc said, as I played well and even scored at the end of the game in the penalty shoot-out victory. “I don’t know what it was, but I didn’t feel any pressure when I was younger taking a penalty. The game was played at the Portway, and I can remember placing the ball and looking at the goal and it looked massive, and I just didn’t care, which I know sounds awful, but I was young and very confident. Missing never entered my head. These days I’m a bag of nerves over a penalty kick!” he laughs. Following that season Alex was furthering his education at Cardiff University. After partaking in pre-season training at Andover. “I took part in the pre-season training at Andover but knew that I would be at Cardiff when the season started. I joined the Cardiff Met university side and we were training and playing twice a week, we were trained by Christian Edwards , who had played for Swansea, Notts Forest and Bristol Rovers so he was very experienced. “University not only gave the qualifications to start me on my road to become a teacher, but it also helped my progression in regards my football career. It was a tough environment, but it stood me in good stead. These days I see a lot of young players have everything delivered to them on a plate. I think all young players need to learn discipline and the respect. Cleaning boots for the older pros is not a bad thing.” The 2011-12 season would see Dockree return to Whitchurch, “I got a call from Jim Macey, and he wanted me to play. My mates at Uni were

24

“The following season, I played just the one game for Whitchurch, which was in the FA Cup against Folland Sports. To be honest, I tried to please everybody and signed for both Cardiff Met and Whitchurch. In the end I had to make a call to Jim and say that I wasn’t coming back and that I would be playing in Wales. I know it made Jim cross with me and don’t get me wrong we are on good terms now, but I know he wasn’t best pleased with my decision. In the end it worked out well for both sides.”

“Going up a division after having such a successful season the previous year was very tough, most of the players you come up against have played at a higher level and are either looking to return up the footballing ladder or looking for one last pay day until they give up playing. Either way you’re playing against top quality opposition, week in, week out and it can be hard. I also wasn’t enjoying my football at the time. Andover Town had just reformed and were going well in Division 1 and I really wanted to be a part of it. So, after 6 games I made the decision to move to Andover Town. The players they had at the time was unbelievable. Quality all over the pitch; Lewis Benson, Claudio Herbert, Lloyd Foot and Michael Dixon. “That season for Cardiff Met was unbelievable we won everything. It was like all the seasons before we were geared up for this one season. We won the Welsh League Division Two and had to play at some horrendous places. I was also playing up-front for the side and some of things that the centre backs use to do behind the refs back were shocking! But we just got on with it. We were miles better than the other sides in the league and fully deserved the title. Whitchurch also achieved promotion. Missing out on the title on goal difference to Brockenhurst.” The following season was not so happy a time for Alex as he returned to Whitchurch for the challenge of Wessex Premier football.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make but I needed a change of scene and I always wanted to play for my local side. That season was another good one in the end, although we ended up finishing second in the league to Petersfield Town by a point. We drew against them on the Easter Saturday and felt that as long as we kept winning, they wouldn’t be able to catch us, unfortunately on the Easter Monday we drew with Tadley Calleva, and Petersfield never looked back.” Alex would also end the season missing out on silverware following injury in the Andover Open Cup against Otterbourne.

“I got knocked out during the final, so I wasn’t able to take a penalty in the shootout. Otterbourne were a good side at the time and were managed by Richard Luffman. Fortunately, I was able to play in the Hospital Cup Final against Bemerton. I remember scoring to make it 2-1 after Claudio equalised and Lloyd Foot got the winner late on. It was a great final.” Dockree would continue to play at the Portway, although he remembers not always fitting into manager Neil Bensons plans. “I was starting from the bench quite often and I was knocking on the managers door, demanding to know why I wasn’t starting matches. I then got a chance up front and started to find the back of the net. I was very much a confidence player. If I started well then, I would be consistent always through the game. I also often scored in batches and if I scored one, I would more than likely get a second in the same game. It was at this time that Alex would receive recognition for reaching 100 appearances for the Town. “I got a hat-trick that game,” he recalls. “We played Fareham Town and I was presented with my 100 appearances trophy and then went on to score a hat-trick in front of nearly 200 people for my hometown club. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

26

It would get better for both Andover sides in 2017-18 when both would finish as runners-up in their respective leagues. Although both sides would be kicking themselves for not actually winning the leagues. “We were flying in the league, by this time we had Mike Gosney, Zach Glasspool, Jo Chamberlain, Joe Wright to name a few. We were about 15 points clear of Blackfield & Langley and bossing the league. We overcame losing to Blackfield at their place and we went to Hamworthy and came from a goal down to win 41 and went out in Bournemouth to celebrate.” That is where Dockree’s season would come to abrupt end, when he was involved in an incident that so nearly ended his football career. “I basically got hit on the night out and ended up fracturing my skull. I do not remember how it happened or who did it, but I was side-lined with the doctors telling me I could not play but I was desperate to finish the season. The most frustrating thing was I could not even go and watch the first three matches after the incident, so I was constantly refreshing Twitter to find out what was happening. “I was finally allowed to go watch the side when they travelled to Horndean and we lost 3-2 despite Zach Glasspool scoring twice. I think the day I realised we were not going to win the league was when we drew 3-3 with Team Solent at home.

“We were 3-0 down and Solent were not exactly a great side and then with 20 minutes to go we started a comeback with Joe Wright and Zach Glasspool scoring. Then Zach got his second to equalise with 3 minutes left and then Mike Gosney struck the crossbar in injury time and if that had gone in then I think we would have won the league. “Meanwhile, I had been working on my fitness to get myself back playing as soon as I could, and I penned in the Russell Coats Cup Final at the end of the season as the match I was aiming for. “I was in the gym every day, desperate to be ready for that game as I had scored in the semifinal, and I was relieved that I made the bench. I did have to wear head protective gear like current Wolves striker Raul Jimenez. People were concerned that I might do more damage to my head, but I wasn’t as the injury didn’t occur on the field playing. I never gave it a second thought. The final was frustrating to watch as Stoneham were bossing the midfield and I just wanted to get on the pitch to affect the game. And I was brought on at half-time and helped win the game 1-0. That would be my last game for Town as during the close season the club rejected promotion and the team disbanded. “I joined Alresford Town, along with a few others from Andover but I didn’t get the best of starts as I broke my foot in the last pre-season friendly, when my foot got kicked by a defender clearing the ball and I knew straight away that it was broke. My wife was not best pleased as we have photos of our holiday and I’m wearing shorts and a massive Robocop style boot! “I got back playing for Alresford, but again I wasn’t enjoying the long drives out for home games all the time and we were expecting our first child soon, so after 25 games I contacted the manager Richard Luffman and explained that things were not working out for me, and he was very understanding as long as I didn’t go straight back to Andover Town or New Street. I was honest with him, and he was fine with that. The itch to get back playing was still there for Alex and at the start of the 2019-20 season it was announced that he had signed for Street. “John Smith had always wanted to sign me, and a number of times made enquiries, but it just wasn’t the right time for me. When he came calling during the summer of 2019 it felt right. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“Again, I didn’t get off to the best of starts as I injured my knee in a pre-season friendly, playing on the Charlton Astro pitch, so my competitive debut didn’t happen until the end of August when we lost 2-1 to Alton in the FA Vase. “After that though we went on an amazing run of results. We had a brilliant squad with the likes of Luke Hooper, Rafa, Jason Silver and Jazz Beavis and were eyeing promotion before Covid hit and put a stop to the season. It then seemed to take ages for us to get back training and we lost a couple of key players. “It was a shame it didn’t work out for Danny Dolan as manager, as he is a great guy and a good technical manager, but JC and Smithy are doing a great job this season and I fully expect the squad they have at their disposal to be promoted at the end of the season.” The most important question for Alex is, who will he be supporting this evening? “New Street! It should be a really good game between two good sides and hopefully a big crowd. I’ve got many more friends at the club now compared to Town, so it has to be Green and Black!” @AndoverNSfc

STREET 1-0 NEW MILTON TOWN COOK 40

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street moved back into third place in the table, after grinding out a narrow 1-0 victory over New Milton Town last Saturday. Reece Rusher was halted in full flow by a well-timed tackle by Elliot Lines and two corners came to nothing before the dangerous Tyrell Sampson took play to the other end with a surging run.

MOMENTS

Rusher broke clear again and was halted by onrushing keeper Luke Dennison with the ball rebounding off his arm, but the referee was saved a difficult decision by a late offside flag. The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock in a furious goalmouth scramble during which the ball was cleared off the line and also struck the post, but it was the home side that did open the scoring five minutes before the break. Awarded a free kick on the left touchline, Rusher swung in the perfect cross and Ross Cook’s header flew into the top corner of the net. Perhaps slightly against the run of play but a picture goal in all respects.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Both sides made a bright start to the second half with Sampson cutting in from the left and striking the far post and Rusher seeing a shot parried by Dennison after collecting a long cross-field ball from Joe Wright. Another Sampson run won a corner and Street replaced Mike Gosney with Mikey Davis. The substitute’s first action was to win and take a corner on the left that was cleared to the edge of the box and met first time by Liam Hibberd with a shot that Dennison saw late and did well to parry. Cook was too high at full stretch and though the visitors were enjoying more of the possession, the home side looked the more dangerous. Max Allen replaced Chris Flood and immediately cleverly turned a Shane Lock through ball into Davis’s path and his curling shot rebounded off the crossbar to safety with the goalkeeper no more than a bystander.

Dennison bravely dived on a loose ball in a crowded six-yard box and a New Milton cross fizzed across the area with nobody able to get a touch before Hibberd queried a decision and was sentenced to ten minutes in the sin bin – with fourteen minutes left on the clock. Street were running down the time now and another low cross came to nothing before Dennison was at full stretch to deny Cook, and the game ended on a strange note when Davis pulled the ball back from the by-line and Lock was adjudged to be offside. Another three valuable points keeps the Street in the hunt for promotion, with both Newport IOW and Folland Sports dropping www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet points.

THE IMPENETRABLE LIONS OF ROME

Some football moments zip by in a flash and others seem to make time stand still. When Glenn Hoddle's England played Italy in Rome in their final FIFA World Cup 1998 qualifier they provided both in quick succession right at the bitter end. Needing only a draw to qualify, David Seaman got England moving after gathering Christian Vieri's attempted bicycle kick and his Arsenal team-mate Ian Wright skipped past Italian goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi to bear down on an empty net. It was too acute an angle for Wright and his shot struck the post despite a nation willing it into the net. Teddy Sheringham couldn't find a finish in the aftermath and Italy played a long pass of their own. Alessandro del Piero clipped in a precise cross for Vieri, who may as well have not moved from the spot from which his original effort had taken place. With time running out it all came down to Vieri against Seaman. The Italian met the cross full and true as we watched, almost able to track the spin of the ball in agonising slow-motion as it arced towards the corner of Seaman's net. We waited, and waited, and waited. But the bulge in the net never came. Vieri had headed wide; England were through. Hoddle first took to his desk at Lancaster Gate with England on the crest of a wave after UEFA Euro '96, and throughout qualifying for France '98 Wembley was the place to be. It was a vibrant and exciting venue, packed with enthusiastic and noisy school groups and hardened England fans alike, all watching one of England's best ever overlooked teams. And it was the dual with Italy that really etched the 1997 England team into the history books.

38

After Gianfranco Zola's goal had beaten them at Wembley, Ian Wright and Paul Scholes scored the first two goals conceded by Italy under Cesare Maldini at Le Tournoi. By kick-off time in Rome in October it was hoped that England wouldn't require another. The remaining results left Hoddle's team in the driving seat but there was still plenty of room for traditional English pessimism, for the job was not quite finished. Italy had kept Alan Shearer at bay at Wembley and had frightening firepower of their own.

Italy's line-up on October 11th 1997 was fearsome and England needed to thwart them in order to guarantee their place in the World Cup the following summer. Without the injured Shearer, Hoddle played Wright up front with Sheringham. David Beckham and Paul Gascoigne were anchored in midfield by Paul Ince and David Batty, both of whom were pivotal in Hoddle's game plan. In the build-up, the former Chelsea boss (helped with translation on this trip by future England manager Roy Hodgson) had talked to his players about deploying an Italian game against the Italians, aiming to frustrate the post-Catenaccio Azzurri with a strategy based primarily on maintaining possession and limiting the opposition's chances. England's performance was disciplined and Hoddle's approach was executed almost to perfection. The first half was as composed a 45minute spell as one could hope to see from England. Italy's opportunities were kept to an absolute minimum, with Batty and Ince -- who famously finished the match in a head bandage -- wonderfully marshalling Italy's midfield playmakers while Gareth Southgate, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell and Graeme Le Saux happily tidied up any loose ends behind them.

Seaman had little to do. In fact, it was Peruzzi who had to be on his guard when Beckham's diagonal pass to the edge of the area allowed Sheringham to tower above Angelo Di Livio and set up Ince, who arrived at the perfect moment but could only direct his volley straight at the Juventus goalkeeper. Beckham himself soon came close to opening the scoring, sweeping the ball over from 18 yards after playing a delightful, lengthened one-two with Sheringham.

The second half was a scruffier affair, but England kept their heads. Hearts were in English mouths with 17 minutes left on the clock when substitute Del Piero, replacing Zola in his last Italy match, appeared to be upended by Adams just inside Seaman's penalty area. Referee Mario van der Ende was prompted into action not to point to the penalty spot, but to caution the legendary Juventus forward for diving. It was a marginal decision and England had escaped a nervous moment that could easily have gone the other way. Del Piero was in the thick of the action again three minutes later. Producing his trademark trickery on the left wing, he foxed Campbell more than once before the England defender was able to stand his ground while the Italian over-elaborated and surrendered possession. Campbell didn't have the ball for long, however. As he scoped out his options, Di Livio came flying in to plant a vicious and unnecessary lunge on the Spurs man. Van der Ende didn't hesitate, showing the yellow card to Di Livio for the second time and reducing the home side to ten men. They continued to press regardless. England remained equal to the challenge. The match careered towards its dramatic conclusion, which began and ended at England's goalline but left it mercifully unbreeched. England were through and the Lions of Rome returned home as heroes.

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

It's difficult for a goalless draw to echo down the ages but this one came close thanks to England's unravelling in the decade that followed. David Baddiel and Frank Skinner reprised 'Three Lions' with the Lightning Seeds, Rome its renewed focal point.

And as Hoddle, his staff and his substitutes poured off the bench onto the field to join the players' celebrations, there was a real sense that this was England's moment. They'd limited Italy on their own pitch in spite of enormous pressure and world class opposition, and there was no suggestion whatsoever that they hadn't deserved it. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It can turn World Cup Italia '90 heartbreak into an historical zenith, a sacred memory one can only dream of matching. And for all the talk of a supposed Golden Generation of English players who began to make their mark after France '98, the team that secured England's qualification in superb style was a far more capable, much more effective outfit.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 WINGERS OF ALL TIME.... 10 RYAN GIGGS WALES

Giggs is the most decorated footballer in England after winning 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three Football League Cups, nine FA Community shields, two UEFA Champions Leagues, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. Pretty impressive trophy cabinet for the Welsh winger. Giggs is also the all-time appearance record holder for the club with 897.

8

ROBERT PIRES

FRANCE

Robert Pires was in his prime when he linked up with Thierry Henry at Arsenal in 2000. Nicknamed D'artagnan after once sporting some chin hair similar to the infamous musketeer, Pires was influential in Arsenal's success in winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two FA Community Shields. Pires also won one Coupe de la Ligue, one UEFA European Championship, two FIFA Confederations Cup and one FIFA World Cup.

7 JOHAN CRUYFF NETHERLANDS

9

TOM FINNEY

NETHERLANDS

Tom Finney only played for one club for the whole of his career, and that beneficiary was Preston North End. Former Liverpool legendary manager Bill Shankly once said about Finney, "Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age...even if he had been wearing an overcoat." Despite his fantastic talent, Finney never won a thing.

On top of being one of the best wingers, Cruyff is one of the best players that has ever lived. You could argue Cruyff was a striker by trade, but such was the system of total football employed by his former club Ajax back in the 60s and 70s. He often switched to the wing to confuse opponents and was equally as devastating there. The man has his own move named after him—what more can be said? Cruyff won eight Eredivisie titles, five KNVB Cups. three European Cups, one Intercontinental Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, one UEFA Intertoto Cup, one La Liga title and one Copa Del Rey.

6

RONALDINHO

BRAZIL

Whilst Roberto Rivelino invented the "flip flap", Ronaldinho certainly perfected it. In his heyday at Barcelona, Ronaldinho was one of the most feared players on the planet. His skills whilst running at full speed were unbelievable and no one knew what he was going to do next. Ronaldinho eventually lost some of his explosive speed, but he still played for a top European club in AC Milan before moving to Flamengo.

42

5

MARC OVERMARS

NETHERLANDS

Overmars is perhaps most famous for his spells at Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona, where he won plenty of silverware, including three Eredivisie titles, one KNVB Cup, two Johan Cruyff shields, one UEFA Champions League, one European Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup, one Premier League, one FA Cup and one FA Charity shield.

3

DAVID GINOLA

FRANCE

Suave French midfielder David Ginola was one of the most exciting wingers ever seen in the English Premier League. Blessed with fantastic balance and a great flair for the game, Ginola was a fan favourite—although he was not always popular with his manager due to his tendency not to bother playing defence. Ginola could create something from nothing and the video above shows one of his finest goals in the 1999 FA Cup.

2 4

JOHN BARNES

ENGLAND

ANDREI KANCHELSKIS

RUSSIA

John Barnes was born in Kingston, Jamaica, but was capped 79 times for England.

Andrei Kanchelskis played for a number of clubs throughout his career, but he was perhaps better known for his time at Manchester United.

Barnes rose to fame for his graceful performances on the wing for Liverpool FC in the 1980s, but he was always tainted with critics who said he never performed as well for his country as he did for the Merseyside Reds.

Blessed with a sparkling pace, Kanchelskis ultimately fell foul of manager Alex Ferguson and was sold to neighbouring club Everton.

Barnes won two League Championships, two Charity Shields, two FA Cups and one League Cup in his distinguished career.

1 DAVID BECKHAM ENGLAND

In comparison to Marc Overmars, David Beckham is a completely different type of winger. Beckham was blessed with possibly the most accurate right foot in the world, and his crosses and free kicks are absolutely deadly. Beckham's game was never about pace which gave him the longevity to play until he was 37 – a 20-year career, during which he won 19 major trophies.. Beckham was won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four FA Community Shields, one FA Youth Cup, one UEFA Champions League, one Intercontinental Cup, one La Liga title, one Supercopa de Espana, two MLS Supporters Shields and one MLS Cup.

CELEBRATING TITLE SUCCESS

By Matt Badcock

We had a bit of a novelty for last Sunday’s NLP – for the first time since 2019, we were able to feature a team from outside of the National League celebrating a title. For those who missed it, Macclesfield FC – formed from the ashes of Macclesfield Town – have won the North West Counties League Premier Division title at the first time of asking and booked their place at Step 4 next season. Over the coming weeks there will be plenty more promotion celebrations across the country and, of course, some less exuberant scenes that follow relegation. Promotion and relegation is vital to the flow of the National League System and it’s so good to have it back again. There were times this season where we perhaps feared we could be heading for a third disrupted campaign. But thankfully that hasn’t materialised and we’re now on the home straight. Last summer there was some movement in the NLS with the elevation of clubs to help reshape the Pyramid – everyone will be glad to see it happen on the pitch this season. It’s been two years since the final round of games of 2019-20 before the country went into lockdown and the season was halted. Flicking back through that edition of The NLP, there is a strong sense everyone knew what was coming – albeit perhaps not to the extent it turned out to be. But among the worry and fears of Covid, there were still the words and pictures of teams striving to get over the line. All in vain. That won’t be the case this time. So Macc are up and there will be more soon. Banbury United and Bracknell Town to name two are inching closer to the finish line, as are Worthing in the Isthmian Premier.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Other promotion races look set to go down to the wire with a chunk of points still to play for deciding who will be crowned champions and who will reach the play-offs. At the other end of the tables there is going to be some real intrigue with the Inter-Step playoffs that will see runners-up at Step 5 get a shot at promotion in one-off games against Step 4 strugglers. It’s a new element to add to the season and we’ll all watch with interest as to how it pans out and how fans take to the format. The last two years has seen a Non-League emerge from the pandemic with real credit. Crowds are booming at all levels; many people seem to have been awakened to this level of the game and the appetite for local football growing. Non-League Day on Saturday, March 26 will be the perfect celebration of everything we love about Non-League football. And it will also be another crucial weekend in the ebb and flow of a football season. It’s great to have it all to look forward to again. @AndoverNSfc

league look In the Premier Division the top match was at the Sunseeker International County Ground where Hamworthy United retained their five-point lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 defeat of Horndean. All the goals came in the second half with Lee Francis and Cameron Munn on target for the hosts and Brandon Miller getting a late consolation for the visitors. The Deans have hit a bad patch and this defeat, their third in as many games, drops them to fifth place in the table. Shaftesbury remain in second place after a 4-0 win at US Portsmouth with a double from Greg Peel and strikes from Asa Phillips and Luke Burbidge while Bashley and Brockenhurst changed places. Bashley were held to a one all draw by AFC Stoneham – Adam Grange and Mat Bainbridge respectively – while the Badgers came out on top by the odd goal in three against Fareham. Mitch Speechley-Price and Ben Dukes with the home goals and Casey Bartlett-Scott for the visitors. The Friday evening clash between AFC Portchester and Moneyfields finished all square at one apiece – Lee Wort and Josh Hazell – but as expected drew a healthy attendance of 447. Portland recorded their second away win in five days with a 2-0 success at Hamble Club, Matt Burrows and Greg Borthwick scoring either side of the break, while Baffins Milton Rovers showed their old form with a 3-0 win at Blackfield & Langley with Jason Parish, Rudi Blankson and James Cowan on the scoresheet. Bournemouth continued their current run of results in securing a two all draw at Alton, goals from Pat McKay and Marcus Cullen cancelling out efforts from Rob Carr and Oli Graham. At the bottom of the table, with Amesbury not playing, Christchurch shared the points at Cowes in a one all draw with the goals credited to Jez Conway and Luke Chalwell while Hythe & Dibden continued their revival with a 2-1 win at Alresford Town, their third win in a row. Filippos Terzidis and Cairo Burton scored the goals – Kristian Andonov replying for the hosts - and they may be too far behind but they are certainly giving it a go at this late stage of the season. In Division One the Bemerton Heath bandwagon rolled on but there were defeats for two of their main challengers. Bemerton won 4-1 at Whitchurch with a hat trick from Justin Bennett and a single from Harry Beckley – Dec Shuttleworth with the home goal – and regained the number one place from Follands who went

52

down 1-0 at Fawley, Dec Hartigan scoring the allimportant goal for the Oilers. Newport lost by the same score at Laverstock & Ford, who played over half the game with ten men and for whom Chae Sykes was on target, and both the Andover sides picked up three points. A Ross Cook header just before half time gave New Street the points against New Milton in a game marred by a very strong wind while a mile or so up the road Andover Town defeated Romsey Town 2-0 thanks to Adam Pattison and Ryan Griffiths. Downton maintained their interest with a 4-0 win at Millbrook, the goals coming in the second half from Sam Howe with two, Ollie Davies and Robbie Owen while Ringwood bounced back from a 6-0 defeat in midweek with three points, Harry Smith scoring the only goal of the game at Petersfield.

An important game at the bottom saw Fleet Spurs gain a valuable 3-1 win over East Cowes Vics at Kennels Lane with the goals coming from Jack Wilson, Jonny Miller and Tom White. Harrison Yates scored for Vics who, along with Fawley and perhaps Ash United, may now be looking over their shoulders. No relief however for Totton & Eling who went down 4-0 at home to Verwood for whom Joe Freak scored twice to go with goals from Jake Carswell and Matt Vining. The Millers are now some 14 points from safety and things are looking grim for a long-established Wessex League Club.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN

Football’s unsustainable finances continue to be affected by external affairs and suboptimal practices, the latest hurdle will doubtless emerge from the war in Ukraine, although the full economic impact of the conflict is still a long way from being known.

However, even before the pandemic and the behaviour of Vladimir Putin, football’s business model was being exposed on a daily basis and covid-19 merely provided the final straw for some clubs. According to Fair Game, the organisation promoting sustainability, integrity and community orientation, 44 of the 85 clubs that filed financial returns for 2019-20 were technically insolvent. These included Premier League clubs West Ham, Brighton, Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United. The most “technically insolvent” club in the Fair Game list is Stoke City with a negative figure of £154.4 million. At the opposite end of the table, the balance sheet equity figures of the big and powerful dwarf the majority of the 92 clubs. Manchester City, for example, had balance sheet equity of £ 631 million, while Chelsea (£511m), Arsenal (£345m), Tottenham (£340m) and Liverpool (£ 208m) were the only others with figures in excess of £ 100 million. Technical solvency is calculated by taking all the club’s assets (including stadium, training ground and players) and subtracting the liabilities (including debt). If liabilities outweigh assets, the club can be categorised as technically insolvent. Niall Couper, CEO of Fair Game, said in a press release: “These pre-pandemic figures should be a huge alarm bell to anyone interested in football. Most clubs only exist because of a wealthy benefactor. Which leads the obvious question: What happens if they walk away?” The football world will soon see what happens when one of the most generous benefactors, Roman Abramovich, leaves Chelsea, and how the new owners of the club eventually run the business. Here we have an example of a club that has enjoyed huge

58

levels of backing suddenly without the man who has funded unprecedented success. The Premier League clubs, generally, have a high degree of solvency which is boosted by TV revenues, amounting to almost £ 2.5 billion in 2020. Couper added: “The problem is that the vast majority of that sum stays in the Premier League and this has created a dangerous culture. Clubs are gambling their very own existence to chase the siren call of the Premier League, with Derby County the latest example.” The Championship, of which Derby have been members for 14 seasons, is renowned for overspending, primarily on players wages. For example, in 2019-20, the wage-toincome ratio in the division rose to 120%, up from 107%. TV revenue distribution needs to be examined closely, for only 1.2% of the total is distributed to clubs below the top two tiers, while 12% goes towards parachute payments for relegated clubs from the Premier. A fairer method would ensure the whole of League One and Two attain technical solvency. Couper says: “There is so much money in football, yet there is no holistic view on how to use it to benefit the game overall.” Fair Game is calling for an independent regulator, a key element of the recent government study on football, but also considers a sustainability index a priority built around four criteria: financial substainability, good governance, equality standards and community and fan engagement. Perhaps there is a need for a credit rating agency of a sort to monitor the financial health of clubs on a real time basis? Although the past two years have seen football struggle against a difficult backdrop, the fact so many clubs have announced financial distress should concern everyone. The geopolitics, the pandemic, the global economy and the UK’s departure from the European Union have all contributed to the current situation. And with the immediate horizon looking very depressing and uncertain, we can only assume more clubs will stare into the abyss at some stage. We have been warned.
