ANDOVER NEW STREET v ANDOVER TOWN MONDAY 27th DECEMBER 2021 KICK-OFF 3PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Merry Christmas and welcome back to Foxcotte Park. We trust you’ve had an enjoyable festive period so far and here’s hoping that continues this afternoon. It’s also the last game of a frustrating 2021 for the Street. Despite the fact there hasn’t been the one certain ‘up’ we so desperate crave, who can forget the highs of the FA Vase victories at the Portway and also on the road at Cribbs and also the hard-fought draw at Shepton Mallet in the FA Cup. Not to mention the impressive league form this season? What’s more, win, lose or draw, you’ve been with us every step of the way. We wonder what 2022 lies in store for us but, today, we end the current year with our neighbours Andover Town. Both clubs will be hoping that come the end of the current campaign that they are celebrating a promotion to the Wessex Premier.

JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and Merry Christmas to you all and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for this big game against Andover Town. I’d like to welcome Town boss Ron Bertie, his players and staff, plus the committee and supporters of Andover Town. Today we entertain a side who have followed on from their progression from last season to be up and in and around the promotion picture once more. They are renowned for playing good, attacking football and there is no doubt that this will be a really tough, testing game for us, especially at this hectic time of year. Earlier in the season we beat Town 4-1 in the FA Vase at the Portway Stadium in one of our best performances away from home so far, but today we have to be fully motivated and concentrated to produce our best form against a very dangerous opponent.

Blistering Our last home league game came against Verwood a couple of weeks ago and a blistering first half display put us in control after going a goal down. It was an all round team performance and we scored some quality goals. What made our performance all the more impressive was that it came against a team in Verwood who are an excellent side. It wasn’t like we were playing a side near the bottom of the league.

Unfortunately, one of the floodlights failed towards the end of the first half and although the game was played on until the break, the referee decided that the game would have to be abandoned. I’m not one for publicly criticising officials, especially at our level, but he never gave the club the opportunity to try and get the lights repaired in order to continue the game. It left us frustrated as we fell further behind in the table but also that we were in such a strong position at half-time and now we have another fixture to add into our backlog due to our success in the FA Vase. Throughout a season, at different times, you need to deal with certain situations and I thought we showed real energy and the lads were fantastic in their work-rate last Saturday at Fleet Spurs. Remember you can make a massive difference so please continue your magnificent support you have showed over the first part of the season by continuing that this afternoon and get behind us once more. We are bound to be tested in all sorts of different ways between now and the end of the season. If we work hard on and off the pitch, we can create great things. Thanks once again for your support and enjoy the rest of the festive period, and today’s game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

A hearty seasonal welcome to the players, staff and fans of Andover Town, here today for a crucial clash between two clubs chasing promotion. I hope that everybody has enjoyed a pleasant and relaxing Christmas. We have been playing cat and mouse with Andover Town over the course of this season so far, although a decent run has seen them move up to second in the table, following their win against East Cowes recently. Nevertheless, we are conscious that Andover Town are one of the more free scoring sides in the division and that today’s game will be by no means straightforward. Obviously, I hope we can continue our own spectacular recent form, especially at home, and produce one of the performances that seems to have become commonplace here at Foxcotte Park.

6

The league is still close with no team running away with it, Bemerton could only draw against Romsey Town, 1-1 and Folland Sports also drew by the same score-line at home to Whitchurch. It shows that anyone can beat anyone on the day or evening and that no side can take the opposition for granted. We currently sit in 5th position in the table, the last of the play-off positions, but we have a number of games in hand on the teams above that would see us move up to at least 3rd if we were to win them. I am confident that if we maintain the type of form we have shown here at home, we have the capability of winning today’s game. Equally, however, Jamie Coleman, John Smith and the team will be conscious that anything less than that scintillating form could result in us failing to achieve our best. From a personal perspective, 2021 has been an interesting year, in the course of which we have continued our work, off the pitch, in respect of upgrading the stadium. The fact there have been no definitive announcements does not mean that we are not closely considering all aspects of our premises.

One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on our neighbours and promotion rivals Andover Town.

“SO FAR, THE PERFORMANCES ALL OVER THE PITCH HAVE BEEN TREMENDOUS, NONE MORE SO THAN THOSE OF HARRY LAWTON.”

I hope you enjoyed a good Christmas. I’d like to hope we gave you some festive cheer after our win before Christmas Day. . The win over Fleet Spurs was thoroughly deserved against an improving Fleet Spurs side. We knew that Fleet would play a certain way and our gameplan was executed to precision. We were 2-0 up at half-time after a commanding 45 minutes. The goals we scored were absolutely fantastic and well worked and we followed that up with a third goal in the second half from Harry Lawton. It was an added bonus to keep a clean sheet, although the only real time it came under threat was when Fleet were awarded a penalty in the second half but thankfully they hit the post. The result, allied with others elsewhere going in our favour, meant we closed the gap at the top. I know it’s a horrible cliché’ but we really do not focus on any other team apart from ourselves and, of course, the club we are playing on any given day. We know that we are good enough and it’s exciting to see that we are now fulfilling our potential.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

So far, the performances all over the pitch have been tremendous, none more so than those of Harry Lawton. ‘H’ unfortunately picked up a nasty injury at Amesbury in the FA Vase that ruled him out for several weeks, but he has come back into the side and although he doesn’t often get in the headlines, he does an invaluable job for us. He covers every blade of grass and hunts down the opposition, never giving them any rest. And he was rewarded with his efforts against Fleet with his goal.

Andover Town come into this game on an impressive 15 game unbeaten run in the league. They are up there challenging for promotion once more and today will be a tough test for us.

IMPRESSIVE We can take heart from our hugely impressive home form. We’ve won eight of nine league matches so far this season at Foxcotte Park and I must admit I never thought I’d ever write that in my notes, especially given our form here last season. Your support has been a driving force behind that, please keep it up this afternoon. It promises to be a fascinating 90 minutes today so please get behind us. Enjoy the match and stay safe.

welcome ANDOVER TOWN

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Andover Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Town make the short journey across Andover for the first time since their 5-1 defeat last month in the North Hants Cup. Ben Emans gave Town an early lead, but the Street fought back with goals from Reece Rusher, Shane Lock, Lee Morris, Harry Lawton and Josh Jeffery sealed the win and progression to the semifinals. This afternoon’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with Andover Town coming into the game one place above the Street, having played a couple of games more. So, a win will be important for both sides to maintain their promotion aspirations. Town got off to a perfect start this season with a 3-0 home victory over Fawley AFC. This was followed with a 3-3 draw at East Cowes and then another draw at home against the Street when first Cameron Thatcher and then a late Ross Cook equaliser earned the Street a point. A 4-3 defeat at Downton followed despite Michael Owen levelling and then Josh Bertie putting the Town in front. A crazy second period

14

saw Downton level and re-take the lead to 4-2 before Musah Stamburi got a late consolation for the Town. A 4-2 home win over Folland Sports in the Hampshire Cup was then followed by a 3-1 home defeat against the same opposition. Further wins against Millbrook, Baffins Milton Rovers, Bashley (on penalties), Infinity and Hythe & Dibden, with only the 4-1 defeat to Street in the FA Vase rounding off September. A 4-2 defeat at Shaftesbury in the League Cup was the Town’s only defeat in October as they went unbeaten with wins over Romsey Town, New Milton Town, Fleet Spurs and Ringwood Town. The month ended with a 2-2 draw at Verwood Town. Michael Owen and David Jerrard gave Town a 2-1 lead, but Oliver Davies equalised with 2o minutes to go to earn the Potters a point. Town have maintained their league unbeaten run of 15 league matches with wins in November over Totton & Eling, Ash United and Petersfield Town. December has seen them defeat Infinity 4-0 thanks to a brace from top scorer Josh Bertie and further goals from David Jerrard and Ben Emans. While Laverstock & Ford were beaten 3-2, thanks to goals from Bertie, Jerrard and Charles Medway. Their last match saw them win 7-1 at home against East Cowes Vics with Josh Bertie scoring 5.

bluffers guide Andover Town FC... THE CLUB The club was established by staff from Andover College and Sparsholt College in 2013 after Andover F.C. had disbanded; the two colleges approached Test Valley Borough Council about taking over Andover's Portway Stadium to use for their football academy programmes, with the aim of also forming a senior club. The club were elected to Division One of the Wessex League. During their first season they were involved in a Hampshire Senior Cup tie at Brockenhurst which finished 0–0 after extra time; in the subsequent penalty shootout, 29 consecutive penalties were scored, with Brockenhurst eventually winning 15–14. This was later confirmed by the Football Association as an English record (and possibly a world record) for the highest number of consecutive goals scored in a penalty shootout. At the end of the 2013–14 season Andover were Division One runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. The following season saw them make their debut in the FA Vase, and in 2015–16 they played in the FA Cup for the first time. In 2017–18 the club were Premier Division runners-up, potentially earning promotion to Division One West of the Southern League. However, the club turned down promotion and were relegated to Division One of the Wessex League as punishment. The club has since steady progression under the stewardship of Ron Bertie as manager, being assisted by Jason Holmes. This progression has seen them become real promotion challengers this season and they are currently on an impressive 15 league game unbeaten run dating back to their last defeat to Folland Sports in late August.

ANDOVER – THE AREA The town is on the River Anton, a major source of the Test, and is situated alongside the major A303 trunk road at the eastern end of Salisbury Plain, 18 miles (29 km) west of the town of Basingstoke, both major rail stops. It is 14 miles (23 km) NNW of the city of Winchester, 35 miles (56 km) north of the city of Southampton and 65 miles (105 km) WSW of London. Andover is twinned with the towns of Redon in France, Goch in Germany, and Andover, Massachusetts in the United States. Watermills have formed an important part in Andover's history. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded six mills. Rooksbury Mill is one of the few surviving mill buildings in Andover. The existence of Rooksbury Mill is first recorded by name in the 17th century. Functioning as a flour mill, it has passed through a succession of owners. Milling ceased in the early 20th century, after which the mill building went through a series of uses including being used as a small theatre. Test Valley Borough Council sold the building in 2002, shortly after it had been devastated following an arson attack. The new owners, Anthony and Sarah de Sigley, restored the building in 2003, rebuilding much of the original structure. A large flour mill, McDougalls, is close to the railway station. 2018 RUSSELL COTES CUP FINAL SUCCESS The new season opened with a 6-1 home league win against Bemerton Heath Harlequins. The club then progressed on an unbeaten run in the league of 16 games, finally losing 3-0 at Alresford Town on 8th November. Whilst their cup encounters didn't fare as well - after two wins in the FA. Cup, including beating Southern League, Wimborne Town after a replay, before losing at home to Cadbury Heath from Bristol. Then a quick exit from the FA. Vase losing to Horndean after extra time. Halfway through the season after 21 games, the club were riding high at the top of the table. By the end of the season with two matches left, the club clinched promotion to the Southern League West division, for the first time in their short history. The season also saw Town achieve the most goals scored (116) since their formation in 2013 and the most points in a season (99) plus of course the highest ever finish as runners up (second place) in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league. The FA conducted their assessment at Portway. Indeed, Chris won the coveted award .... A STREET... …AND A BLUEBIRD

A number of players have served both the Street and the Bluebirds down the years. George Baxter, Michael Horne, Dave Tasker, Michael Weatherall, Luke Dempsey, Liam Hibberd, Mark Keogh, Sam Mills, Alfie Moulding, Adam Pearson, Matt Scott, Dean Smith, McAulie Stubbs, Owen Trapnell, Joe Wright, Craig Blakeman, Gary Thorne, Zach Hine, Reece Rusher, Claudio Herbert and Alex Dockree are names familiar to both sets of supporters. One name that does stick out is Callum Sweeney. Callum started at Street, where he played sporadically over the course of a few seasons and made 10 appearances for the and scored 1 goal. It was then in the 2016-17 season that he played for 3 local sides in one season. He made 11 appearances for Street, 10 for Whitchurch United, scoring twice and finally 6 appearances at the Portway for the Bluebirds. He returned to Foxcotte Park for the successful 2017-18 season, where he played a key role in the Street obtaining promotion to the Wessex Premier and also win both the North Hants Senior Cup and the Andover Open Cup. Sweeney would make 41 appearances that season and scored 18 times including a crucial goal against Christchurch late in the season and he would also have a hand in many of the goals that season.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE? Today will be the 11th meeting between the Street and the Bluebirds and will be the fifth at Foxcotte Park. The Street have a slight edge against today’s visitors, winning five of the 10 matches. One has ended all square whilst Andover Town have won the other four. That sole draw came earlier this season at the Portway Stadium with 369, the highest attendance of the season so far this season, witnessing Andover Town taking a two-goal lead into half-time, through Josh Bertie and Michael Owen. The Street would fight back late in the second half with first Cameron Thatcher scoring and then Ross Cook equalised late on, when he fired home from the edge of the box following a Street corner. Nathan Primus was sent -off for Andover Town between the two goals going in. The Street have also played Andover Town in two cupties this season. The first saw Daryll Phillips make an outstanding debut for the Street, when he scored in the first 30 seconds of the match and would go on to score an

20

The following season saw him make a further 39 appearances for the Street and although the campaign would see them relegated, Sweeney’s performances would ensure silverware would be secured again with both the North Hants and Andover Open Cups retained.

Callum Sweeney

Callum would move from the Street to Tadley Calleva in the middle of the 2019-20 season, where he would make 12 appearances and scoring 4 times for Tadley. In 2020-21, he would go back to the Portway for a second time and would make just 9 appearances that season, scoring twice. This season Sweeney is applying his trade at current league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins. He has made 23 appearances to date, scoring 4 goals – including 1 penalty. amazing hat-trick in the 4-1 victory at the Portway Stadium. Town captain Brendon Holmes scoring a late consolation for the Bluebirds. The other cup-tie would take place last month in the North Hants Senior Cup and again the Street were victorious, even though they would have to come from behind after Ben Emans had put the Town ahead in the first half. The Street responded and would score twice late in the 1st half through Shane Lock and Reece Rusher. The second half would see Town go down to 10 men when JJ Tucker was sent off for the visitors. The Street would take advantage with further goals from Lee Morris, Harry Lawton and Josh Jeffery. At Foxcotte Park the Street have won two of the four games. The Street’s other win here came in the league in 2019 when a penalty from Callum Sweeney was cancelled out by a free-kick equaliser from Zach Hine, before Jake Curtis scored a fine header to win the three points. The Town won the first two meetings at Foxcotte park back in 2014 (0-2) and 2015 (0-9) in the League Cup.

Alex of Andover HE’S ONE OF A SELECT GROUP OF PLAYERS THAT HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH STREET AND TOWN. MIDFIELDER ALEX DOCKREE REFLECTS ON THE UPS AND DOWN DURING HIS TIME AT FOXCOTTE PARK AND THE PORTWAY STADIUM. “No, I think the uncertainty of the season not going the full distance played a key part, we were always wondering if the game we had next would be our last!” The Street would end the nightmare 2020-21 season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Downton, which would see Street miss out on promotion by 1 point on the points per game calculations made by the League over the last two curtailed seasons. It was probably one of the toughest seasons in Dockrees career. But more of that later – let’s start at the beginning. Everyone likes a hometown boy done good. The same can be said of Alex, although he didn’t begin his career in football at one of the Andover sides.

“Don’t worry I could talk about football all night,” says Alex Dockree as we usher our apologies for interrupting his Thursday evening. As the phone call ticked around the hour mark Dockree has reminisced about his playing career, as the conversation wandered from his time as a youngster at Whitchurch United, to joining his hometown club – Andover Town to finally playing for Street during two Covid-19 hit seasons. “It’s been amazing to recall my playing career!” he says. Dockree is excited, it’s the evening before the last day of term and Alex, who’s main profession when he isn’t playing football is a teacher, is already looking forward to the Christmas break. The former Street midfielder reflected on last season’s disappointing early ending, and we asked if the team had a hangover from the 201920 seasons unscheduled finish with 10 games to go?

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“I started out playing men’s football for Whitchurch Reserves. I signed up in the New Year of 2008, as soon as I was eligible to play,” explains Dockree. “I had just turned 16 and wanted to step up away from youth football. “I played just under a dozen games for the reserve side that season and even got one goal but can’t remember who it was against or what it was like.” What he does remember was the following 2009-10 season as it marked his first team debut for Whitchurch, even though he played very few reserve matches that season. “There is a very good explanation for that. I was playing for Basingstoke Town Academy U19’s that season but was also dual signed with Whitchurch so when Basingstoke’s season ended, I was able to play for the Jam Boys. I had a good season with Basingstoke, and it helped set me up for the future.” Alex’s first appearance for Whitchurch was an important one too – “It was the Andover Open Cup Final against Otterborne. I can remember going into the changing room and some of the guys were like ‘who’s this kid?’ but Marc Rees stood up

going home to play rugby, so I wasn’t missing out by going home and I was also getting paid. I could get a train home from Cardiff for £8 then and I would make the most of getting my washing done at home. I’d also did coach up at Andover Youth on a Saturday morning, so my weekends would be fairly busy with football.” “Whitchurch were in a progression stage and building for the future, the aim was to get into the Wessex Premier. We had some talented players like Paul Coventry and Brett Denham in the squad, but we finished in 8th position.”

for me and said, ‘no he’s quality, we’ll be ok tonight with him in the side.’ Well, I came on and endorsed what Marc said, as I played well and even scored at the end of the game in the penalty shoot-out victory. “I don’t know what it was, but I didn’t feel any pressure when I was younger taking a penalty. The game was played at the Portway, and I can remember placing the ball and looking at the goal and it looked massive, and I just didn’t care, which I know sounds awful, but I was young and very confident. Missing never entered my head. These days I’m a bag of nerves over a penalty kick!” he laughs. Following that season Alex was furthering his education at Cardiff University. After partaking in pre-season training at Andover. “I took part in the pre-season training at Andover but knew that I would be at Cardiff when the season started. I joined the Cardiff Met university side and we were training and playing twice a week, we were trained by Christian Edwards , who had played for Swansea, Notts Forest and Bristol Rovers so he was very experienced. “University not only gave the qualifications to start me on my road to become a teacher, but it also helped my progression in regards my football career. It was a tough environment, but it stood me in good stead. These days I see a lot of young players have everything delivered to them on a plate. I think all young players need to learn discipline and the respect. Cleaning boots for the older pros is not a bad thing.” The 2011-12 season would see Dockree return to Whitchurch, “I got a call from Jim Macey, and he wanted me to play. My mates at Uni were

“The following season, I played just the one game for Whitchurch, which was in the FA Cup against Folland Sports. To be honest, I tried to please everybody and signed for both Cardiff Met and Whitchurch. In the end I had to make a call to Jim and say that I wasn’t coming back and that I would be playing in Wales. I know it made Jim cross with me and don’t get me wrong we are on good terms now, but I know he wasn’t best pleased with my decision. In the end it worked out well for both sides.”

“Going up a division after having such a successful season the previous year was very tough, most of the players you come up against have played at a higher level and are either looking to return up the footballing ladder or looking for one last pay day until they give up playing. Either way you’re playing against top quality opposition, week in, week out and it can be hard. I also wasn’t enjoying my football at the time. Andover Town had just reformed and were going well in Division 1 and I really wanted to be a part of it. So, after 6 games I made the decision to move to Andover Town. The players they had at the time was unbelievable. Quality all over the pitch; Lewis Benson, Claudio Herbert, Lloyd Foot and Michael Dixon. “That season for Cardiff Met was unbelievable we won everything. It was like all the seasons before we were geared up for this one season. We won the Welsh League Division Two and had to play at some horrendous places. I was also playing up-front for the side and some of things that the centre backs use to do behind the refs back were shocking! But we just got on with it. We were miles better than the other sides in the league and fully deserved the title. Whitchurch also achieved promotion. Missing out on the title on goal difference to Brockenhurst.” The following season was not so happy a time for Alex as he returned to Whitchurch for the challenge of Wessex Premier football.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make but I needed a change of scene and I always wanted to play for my local side. That season was another good one in the end, although we ended up finishing second in the league to Petersfield Town by a point. We drew against them on the Easter Saturday and felt that as long as we kept winning, they wouldn’t be able to catch us, unfortunately on the Easter Monday we drew with Tadley Calleva, and Petersfield never looked back.” Alex would also end the season missing out on silverware following injury in the Andover Open Cup against Otterbourne.

“I got knocked out during the final, so I wasn’t able to take a penalty in the shootout. Otterbourne were a good side at the time and were managed by Richard Luffman. Fortunately, I was able to play in the Hospital Cup Final against Bemerton. I remember scoring to make it 2-1 after Claudio equalised and Lloyd Foot got the winner late on. It was a great final.” Dockree would continue to play at the Portway, although he remembers not always fitting into manager Neil Bensons plans. “I was starting from the bench quite often and I was knocking on the managers door, demanding to know why I wasn’t starting matches. I then got a chance up front and started to find the back of the net. I was very much a confidence player. If I started well then, I would be consistent always through the game. I also often scored in batches and if I scored one, I would more than likely get a second in the same game. It was at this time that Alex would receive recognition for reaching 100 appearances for the Town. “I got a hat-trick that game,” he recalls. “We played Fareham Town and I was presented with my 100 appearances trophy and then went on to score a hat-trick in front of nearly 200 people for my hometown club. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

26

It would get better for both Andover sides in 2017-18 when both would finish as runners-up in their respective leagues. Although both sides would be kicking themselves for not actually winning the leagues. “We were flying in the league, by this time we had Mike Gosney, Zach Glasspool, Jo Chamberlain, Joe Wright to name a few. We were about 15 points clear of Blackfield & Langley and bossing the league. We overcame losing to Blackfield at their place and we went to Hamworthy and came from a goal down to win 41 and went out in Bournemouth to celebrate.” That is where Dockree’s season would come to abrupt end, when he was involved in an incident that so nearly ended his football career. “I basically got hit on the night out and ended up fracturing my skull. I do not remember how it happened or who did it, but I was side-lined with the doctors telling me I could not play but I was desperate to finish the season. The most frustrating thing was I could not even go and watch the first three matches after the incident, so I was constantly refreshing Twitter to find out what was happening. “I was finally allowed to go watch the side when they travelled to Horndean and we lost 3-2 despite Zach Glasspool scoring twice. I think the day I realised we were not going to win the league was when we drew 3-3 with Team Solent at home.

“We were 3-0 down and Solent were not exactly a great side and then with 20 minutes to go we started a comeback with Joe Wright and Zach Glasspool scoring. Then Zach got his second to equalise with 3 minutes left and then Mike Gosney struck the crossbar in injury time and if that had gone in then I think we would have won the league. “Meanwhile, I had been working on my fitness to get myself back playing as soon as I could, and I penned in the Russell Coats Cup Final at the end of the season as the match I was aiming for. “I was in the gym every day, desperate to be ready for that game as I had scored in the semifinal, and I was relieved that I made the bench. I did have to wear head protective gear like current Wolves striker Raul Jimenez. People were concerned that I might do more damage to my head, but I wasn’t as the injury didn’t occur on the field playing. I never gave it a second thought. The final was frustrating to watch as Stoneham were bossing the midfield and I just wanted to get on the pitch to affect the game. And I was brought on at half-time and helped win the game 1-0. That would be my last game for Town as during the close season the club rejected promotion and the team disbanded. “I joined Alresford Town, along with a few others from Andover but I didn’t get the best of starts as I broke my foot in the last pre-season friendly, when my foot got kicked by a defender clearing the ball and I knew straight away that it was broke. My wife was not best pleased as we have photos of our holiday and I’m wearing shorts and a massive Robocop style boot! “I got back playing for Alresford, but again I wasn’t enjoying the long drives out for home games all the time and we were expecting our first child soon, so after 25 games I contacted the manager Richard Luffman and explained that things were not working out for me, and he was very understanding as long as I didn’t go straight back to Andover Town or New Street. I was honest with him, and he was fine with that. The itch to get back playing was still there for Alex and at the start of the 2019-20 season it was announced that he had signed for Street. “John Smith had always wanted to sign me, and a number of times made enquiries, but it just wasn’t the right time for me. When he came calling during the summer of 2019 it felt right. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“Again, I didn’t get off to the best of starts as I injured my knee in a pre-season friendly, playing on the Charlton Astro pitch, so my competitive debut didn’t happen until the end of August when we lost 2-1 to Alton in the FA Vase. “After that though we went on an amazing run of results. We had a brilliant squad with the likes of Luke Hooper, Rafa, Jason Silver and Jazz Beavis and were eyeing promotion before Covid hit and put a stop to the season. It then seemed to take ages for us to get back training and we lost a couple of key players. “It was a shame it didn’t work out for Danny Dolan as manager, as he is a great guy and a good technical manager, but JC and Smithy are doing a great job this season and I fully expect the squad they have at their disposal to be promoted at the end of the season.” The most important question for Alex is, who will he be supporting this afternoon? “New Street! It should be a really good game between two good sides and hopefully a big crowd. I’ve got many more friends at the club now compared to Town, so it has to be Green and Black!” @AndoverNSfc

NEWPORT IOW 2-1 STREET KELLY 22, 32

HOOPER 45

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street slipped to their third defeat of the season as they could not recover from going two goals down in the first half on the Island. In bright sunshine the Andover New came close to taking the lead in the opening minute with Luke Hooper forcing a good save from Joe McCormack and the home side then retaliating with two corners in quick succession. Connor Kelly, who was to torment the Street left flank all afternoon, broke clear and his low cross took a deflection off a defender before hitting the post and being cleared to safety.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Newport wasted a free kick on the edge of the “D” – one of many strange decisions over the course of the afternoon – but broke the deadlock after twenty-three minutes when Kelly outpaced the defence on the right and slotted the ball past the advancing O‘Brien in the New Street goal.

Almost immediately the score was doubled as Kelly collected a through ball, this time on the left, the defence appealed vainly for an offside flag that was rightly not raised and the finish again was coolly executed. Street came back into the game and after McCormack had brilliantly turned a close range shot from Adam Pearson over the bar Street reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time. An attack was stopped on the corner of the penalty area, the referee awarded yet another free kick, and Luke Hooper lifted the ball over the wall and high into the far corner of the net. The Street battled hard in the second half but were indebted to O’Brien as he saved late on but despite plenty of the ball in the opposition half, the Street could not find the final pass to create an opportunity at goal and would leave the Island pointless.

The second half started and a Town equaliser came from a great free kick from former Street midfielder Zach Hine. The free-kick smashing in off the cross bar with keeper Chris Wing beaten. Harry Lawton scored his fifth goal of the season in the 3-0 win over Fleet Spurs in our last match before Christmas. The midfielder was again a major influence in his familiar role at the heart of the Street midfield. As you can see from the graphics, the majority of Lawton’s touches on the ball were through the centre of the field, including the allimportant through ball for Shane Lock to put the Street in front. Just 10 of his 94 touches occurred on the left hand-side of the pitch, but ironically his goal came from a touch on the lefthand side of the pitch. What’s also worth noting is the midfielder’s touches in his own half. Interestingly two out of Lawton’s first eight touches in the first 10 minutes came in the Fleet Spur’s half of the pitch as Street enjoyed the best of the early exchanges.

The website really is the best way to keep up to date with everything at Foxcotte Park including what social events are going on at the club. Alongside our Facebook and Twitter accounts we are looking to bring in a Youtube channel, which will show match highlights, pre and post match interviews – we have provided a potential taster below on a matchday.

TEAMSHEETS

Match line-ups have to be confirmed in writing to the referee one hour before kickoff; not long after the match officials have seen them they are available to for you to view on Twitter.

FREE CLOCKWATCH

Also on Twitter, you can see our popular live, minute by minute text commentary, absolutely free, direct from the ground. Every incident is reported from the games – chances, goals, substitutions, bookings, you name it – it is the most comprehensive free service for Street games anywhere.

FULL-TIME REPORT

As soon as the full-time whistle blows, a match report will be being worked on and will be available to read on www.andovernewstreetfc.co.uk as soon as possible. The report is our breakdown of the key incidents as the match unfolded.

POST-MATCH REACTION

We will bring you all of manager’s John Smith and Jamie Coleman’s reaction from their post-match interview on www.andovernewstreetfc.co.uk. Youtube viewers will also be able to watch player reaction from the dressing room.

SEE THE HIGHLIGHTS

Approximately 48 hours after the final whistle, you can re-live all of the action again with home match highlights on the club’s Youtube channel.

REFEREES THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE NON-LEAGUE GAME! Whether they be taking charge of a local game on a Sunday morning or a cup final in front of a 80,000 capacity stadium, referees and their assistants get called all sorts. But certain names that never get muttered by managers, players or supporters alike are “vital”, “integral” and “lifeblood” of the game we all love. Last week, we ran a feature on a dangerous shortage of officials which is threatening to send the grassroots game spiraling into crisis. Already, it has led to matches at Step 7 and above being played without a qualified referee or, even worse, cancelled altogether. Indeed, the Liverpool County Premier League has even had to scratch scheduled games in the divisions below its topflight this season due to their pool of referees being required to officiate matches in FA competitions or County Cups. And it’s not just a problem being experienced at local level. This season, three referees who normally operate in the Championship were drafted in to take charge of FA Trophy qualifiers during the October international weekend due to shortages. Just why the situation has worsened so suddenly is unclear, but it doesn’t take a genius to work out where the problem may lie. Covid hasn’t helped, of course, but abuse directed at match officials for just doing their job (voluntarily in many case) is a problem which sadly won’t go away. The NLP’s feature highlighted the work done by Cheshire FA to recruit new match officials and protect existing referees from becoming victims. “Abuse directed at match officials is one factor but that’s been a problem for a while,” said Cheshire League chairman Rob Goodwin-Davey. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

By Sam Emery

“But it’s definitely not the sole reason. “We’ve all lost match officials, but not been able to replace them. There isn’t a quick fix.” Another bone of contention is the cost of applying for a place on the course – a problem which the West Lancashire League is trying to address. The fee, around £130, is said to have put off potential match officials – and it’s easy to see why. I mean, who would cough up £130 just to qualify to be abused week in, week out? With this in mind, the West Lancashire League has pledged to reimburse newly qualified referees a percentage of the course price once they’ve taken charge of five fixtures in that competition. Barry Cropp, referee appointments officer for the West Lancashire League said: “Registrations are down in Lancashire and the £20 fee for doing so should have been waived this season to encourage people back. “The same goes for the course fees. It’s a lot of money when you don’t often read positive news about refereeing.” Keeping the conveyor belt of new referees rolling with courses such as this have now become vital in ensuring the grassroots game has a future. For all the negativity, which is publicised, a career as a matchday official has many perks and advantages and can often provide a healthy second income at senior NonLeague level. As New Year’s Resolutions go, I would thoroughly recommend you get in touch with your local county or regional FA and enquire about becoming a football referee. You may just even contribute to help save the beautiful grassroots game. We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at The NLP. @AndoverNSfc

league look In Division One the leaders Bemerton Heath were held to a one all draw at Romsey Town – Charlie Rattley and Justin Bennett on target for the two sides - and there was a similar score line at Follands where Whitchurch were the visitors. Ethan Anders scored for the home side with the Jamboys goal coming from Cameron George in another good result for Whitchurch having taken a point from Newport last week. Seven days on and a lone goal from Josh Younie gave Port the points against Petersfield Town at Smallbrook but the top scorers of the day, both collectively and individually, were Andover Town who continued their almost inexorable rise up the table with a 7-1 win over East Cowes Vics at the Portway, setting a new record of 30 of scoring in consecutive games according to their Social Media. Josh Bertie very much led the way with four goals with Brendan Holmes, Ben Emans and Brendan Ebireri completing the seven, although there does seem to be some discrepancy over who scored. Jordan Chapman netting a consolation for the Vics. Andover New Street remain in fifth spot but have narrowed the gap on two of the Clubs above them after a comfortable 3-0 win at Fleet Spurs. Shane Lock, Robbie Owen, and Harry Lawton with the goals. Verwood Town’s current poor run continued with a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Downton – Sam Howe and Shaun Prentice with the goals while Laverstock & Ford quickly bounced back to winning ways with a 4-0 win at Totton & Eling thanks to Chae Sykes (2), Harrison Hale and Jake Rawkins, but New Milton’s Vase form deserted them as Ash United journeyed south and returned home with an impressive and much needed 3-1 victory. Zak Aubrey-Simpson with two and Lochlan McNicholl scored the all-

52

important goals with Ben Cooper claiming the home side’s consolation. Infinity switched their game to Ringwood Town and “re-paid” their hosts with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Danny Phillips and Andy Powell against a lone strike from Joss Holford. Finally, Millbrook and Fawley finished all square at one apiece at Test Park with the goals credited to James Clifton for the visitors and an own goal for the hosts.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN This time around, Jürgen Klopp has a point, with all that’s going on, the fixture list is less than sympathetic to footballers as they cope with the latest wave of the pandemic. While most of Britain is being told to work at home, avoid certain places and keep those masks on, players run the risk of infection every time they run out on the pitch. Football is a combat sport to some extent, so isolation while on duty is impossible. However, there’s a degree of contradiction given the low level of vaccination among players in England. If players and managers are that worried about their wellbeing, then why has the Premier League got the lowest level of vaccination among the top leagues in Europe. Fair play to Klopp for saying, publicly that an unvaccinated player is no use to him. In Britain, the attitude towards vaccination suggests many things, not least that other countries do not want Brits arriving at airports at the moment. But compare the vaccination rate of the Premier (68%) at the last count compared to Serie A (98%), Ligue 1 (95%), Bundesliga (94%) and La Liga (90%) – it is really quite shameful and very irresponsible. Fans are told to take their lateral flow tests and behave responsibly, showing evidence of a clean bill of health and double vaccinations, so why don’t players also tow the line? The next batch of figures are due any moment now, so we will see if the trend has changed.

Recently, I was on a coach going to an away match with my local step three nonleague club and we were told to wear masks while we were in our seats. The officials and fans on the coach adhered to the rules, but the players were without masks. This was, in my view, a kick in the teeth to the people playing ball. Some might argue that it’s a generational thing, that older folk will wear masks as they are more vulnerable, but the unmasked are also capable of infecting others. The masks may not be 100% reliable, but they stop other picking up your droplets. From the clubs’ perspective, surely, they would insist on their players being vaccinated? These young men are in a team game, changing together, showering alongside each other, celebrating together. If nothing else, would they not want to protect themselves to limit the damage done by the virus? And if they are the role models they claim to be and community-minded characters that support worthy causes, how can they shy away from vaccinations? The clubs have decided to push ahead with the Christmas programme, despite some rumblings that they were concerned. So, for all the mumbling about unacceptable fixtures, to quote the typical post-match manager, “we go again… and again”. If the current rate of infection continues, nobody will be going again for a while.
