ANDOVER NEW STREET v ANDOVER TOWN TUESDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2021 KICK-OFF 7.45PM
JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s encounter against Andover Town in the North Hants Senior Cup Quarter-Final. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to manager Ron Bertie, his staff and players plus the committee and fans, who have made the short journey to Andover tonight. Andover Town have been on a good run of results of late and will no doubt be high on confidence, especially after their 3-2 victory on Saturday against then league leaders Newport IOW. We have also been on a good run and apart from the defeat against Laverstock & Ford, which was a game we never really got going in, we have played well in patches but more importantly we have been able to grind out the results – even when not playing well.
Defended Well This was the case on Saturday when we travelled to Ringwood Town and took an early lead when Daryll Phillips was able to turn on the edge of the box and then able to lay the ball off for Shane Lock to find the top corner.
“DARYLL DARYLL PHILLIPS WAS ABLE TO TURN ON THE EDGE OF THE BOX AND THEN ABLE TO LAY THE BALL OFF FOR SHANE LOCK TO FIND THE TOP CORNER.” deal with and it was nice to go another game without conceding. Our defence is looking solid again and that is down to a lot of hard work on the training ground. Looking ahead to Saturday, we welcome Romsey Town here, which will be another tough game. Turning our attentions back to tonight, will there be a few changes? Yes there will. We’ll be picking a team to win the game but it’s important that we are able to build up the fitness of some of the squad, whilst also giving those players player who have shown well a chance to do so again, which could push themselves into the forefront of our minds for Saturday. Get behind the lads tonight and enjoy the game.
We then defended well and restricted Ringwood to long range efforts at goal that Paddy was able to

GARY THORNE POSITION: DEFENDER | AGE: 29 STAUS: SIGNED AFTER LEAVING ANDOVER TOWN HE SAID: “It’s a club I’ve been with since the age of 15, growing up in the reserves and then progressing into the first team. When I left last season I thought it was the right decision as I feel the time away has made me a better player. After speaking to John and Danny and seeing the calibre of signings coming in helped massively with my decision. ”
DANNY FIELD POSITION: DEFENDER | AGE: 27 STAUS: SIGNED AFTER LEAVING BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS HE SAID: “I decided to return to New Street because it’s my local club and after a few seasons away I wanted to get back enjoying my football again. welcome ANDOVER TOWN
It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Andover Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Town make the short journey across Andover for the first time since their 2-1 defeat in October 2019. A Callum Sweeney penalty was cancelled out by a Zach Hine free-kick but the Street took the three points through a Jake Curtis header. This evening’s match promises to be an entertaining cup tie with Andover Town coming into the game one place above the Street, having played a game more. Of course league form counts for nothing in a cup-tie but both sides will fancy their chances of progressing tonight. Town got off to a perfect start this season with a 3-0 home victory over Fawley AFC. This was followed with a 3-3 draw at East Cowes and then another draw at home against the Street when first Cameron Thatcher and then a late Ross Cook equaliser earned the Street a point. A 4-3 defeat at Downton followed despite Michael Owen levelling and then Josh Bertie putting the Town in front. A crazy second period

saw Downton level and re-take re the lead to 4-2 before Musah Stamburi got a late consolation for the Town. A 4-2 2 home win over Folland Sports in the Hampshire Cup was then followed follow by a 3-1 home defeat against the same opposition. Further wins against Millbrook, Baffins Milton Rovers, Bashley (on penalties), Infinity and Hythe & Dibden, with only the 4-1 4 defeat to Street in the FA Vase rounding off September. A 4-2 2 defeat at Shaftesbury Shafte in the League Cup was the Town’ss only defeat in October as they went unbeaten with wins over Romsey Town, New Milton Town, Fleet Spurs and Ringwood Town. The month ended with a 2-2 2 draw at Verwood Town. Michael Owen and David Jerrard gave Town a 2-1 1 lead but Oliver Davies equalised with 2o minutes to go to earn the Potters a point. Town have started this month brightly with a 3-0 0 away victory over Whitchurch, before last Saturday’ss game with league leaders Newport IOW, saw the Town go into a 2 goal lead through club top scorer Josh Bertie, ertie, only for the Port to reply twice in the last 10 minutes but there was still time for Freeman Nyakumbi to score the winner for Town in the 87th minute minu and it was his first goal for the club..

YESTERDAY’S PAGES
Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to a previous clash with Andover Town in 2019 19.
Andover New Street 2-1 Andover Town 8th October Octo 2019 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2019/20 season with a 1-1 home draw with fellow promotion challengers US Portsmouth. Luke Hooper got off the mark in the 18th minute, while the Portsmouth side would equalise in the 83rd minute through substitute Jay Ripiner. This was followed up with a 2-0 victory at Verwood Town, with Hooper and Ilyas Warshow scoring. An entertaining 3-3 draw at Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the FA Cup with Callum Sweeney missing a penalty and then having to go in goal when regular shot-stopper George Baxter went off injured in the first half. The replay was just as entertaining with Street winning 3-2. A 4-2 away victory at Petersfield Town was next and then a comfortable 3-0 victory at Totton & Eling in the Hampshire Senior Cup. Thatcham Town proved too strong against the Street in the next round of the FA Cup and Alton would win 2-1 in the FA Vase. September started with a 4-1 defeat against Downton was followed with a 6-1 home win over Folland Sports. Wessex Premier Division side Horndean were brushed aside in the Hampshire Senior Cup 4-1 and then a 5-2 victory over East Cowes Victoria with Street goals from Callum Sweeney, Matt Scott, Alex Dockree, Kieran Le Brun and Shane Lock. A forgettable 9-1 defeat at Bemerton came next with Street battling back to 1-1 early on and then having Mark Keogh sent off for a last man challenge, with Bemmie taking advantage of the extra man.

October started with a narrow 1-0 1 defeat in 72 FIXTURES AND at RESULTS the Wessex League Totton & Eling but no one seemed to the disappointed as itthroughout avoided a2021/22 Follow Street progress midweek trip to the Isle of Wight in the League Cup. A Tuesday night derby with Andover Town was next and in front of a bumper crowd of 248 the Street got off to a great start when a penalty was awarded in the 15th minute, which was dispatched by Sweeney but the Street couldn’t add to their lead. The second half started and a Town equaliser came from a great free-kick free from former Street midfielder Zach Hine. The free-kick free smashing in off the crosss bar with keeper Chris Wing beaten. The he Street would immediately respond when following a cleared Street corner, the ball was whipped back into the box and centre back Jake Curtis would be presented with a free header to give the Street the lead once again. The Street would manage to hold on to the lead until the end this time though to cue the celebrations and get their promotion push back on track, although the season would eventually finish early due to the Covid-19 Covid outbreak.

THE PROGRAMME The Street produced a colourful 24-page programme for the visit of neighbours Andover Town, with a cost price of £1.. Manager John Smith, in his notes mentioned embracing the challenge of catching the teams above them, which they eventually did. HOLLYWOOD NON-LEAGUE LEAGUE By Matt Badcock
You have to wonder what Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney really made of their first experience of Non-League football. In case you hadn’t heard, the actors who bought Wrexham turned up at Maidenhead United to see their first Red Dragons in the flesh last week. For people who roll in some pretty high-profile and glamorous circles, walking in to be greeted with some heckling must have been an eyeopening experience. I doubt that happens on the red carpet. The depth of the National League System on full show with more than 1,600 turning out on a dark night to watch 90 minutes of the Beautiful Game. Fantastic. I imagine they returned home with an even greater sense of how vital all these clubs are to their communities, not to mention how much it means to the supporters of the club they now own. Of course, as is the way with these things, their team lost 3-2 before conceding a late equaliser against Torquay United on Saturday to draw 1-1. The documentary covering their take-over will be titled Welcome to Wrexham. Last week was also a Welcome to Football. Where it rarely goes to plan. After Tuesday’s defeat, Deadpool star Reynolds – a seriously successful businessman to boot – described his feelings on an instagram post.
www.ansfc.co.uk
facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet
“Football is a staggering, heartbreaking, gorgeous, tommy-gun gun of soul-deadening, soul evil and beauty and I'm never sleeping again ever, ever.” Whether you are interested in their takeover or are indifferent, we can probably all relate, in some form, to that summary. Whoever you support, there must have been times when you think: Why do I do this? I know I have. There are millions of people in this country who have no interest in this mad game. Who don’t spend their Saturdays – or midweek evenings – standing in the cold, or glued to websites and social media to see how their team and rivals have got on.And sometimes, after those last-minute goals, you do wonder if it would be easier to not bother. But that’s the thing with football. It hooks you in. It refuses to let go. Conceding stoppage-time stoppage goals is equalled out by those stoppage-time stoppage winners. Or at least the hope of one. And there’s something some bizarrely magical about being out in the freezing cold watching a drab draw. Especially in NonNon League. Where you’re so close to the action and feel so much a part of it. I think we’ve seen that this season with some of the attendances across all levels – a combination of people just happy to be out at games again, mixed with an apathy of the higher reaches of the game. Because, yes, football can be a real pain at times. There are issues at all levels that really grate and things in Non-League League that th could be better. But it also provides more drama and moments than any Hollywood script. Hopefully the Wrexham duo saw that for themselves.

league look In Division One Follands Sports went to the top of the table on Tuesday, lost the position to Newport on Wednesday, and then regained it by winning 3-1 at Petersfield whilst Newport were beaten by the fast climbing Andover Town. Fabio Manuel with two and Jake Newton claimed the Follands goals with Petersfield’s single reply coming from Ben Cooper. At the Portway Josh Bertie gave Andover a two goal lead that was cancelled out in the final fifteen minutes by Joe Craig and Connor Kelly only for substitute Freeman Nyakumbi to score the winner with his first goal for the Club. Bemerton Heath remain in the top three after two goals from Justin Bennett and one from new signing George Bishop gave them a 3-1 win over Fleet Spurs at Western Way – Shane Gibson with the Spurs goal. Andover New Street and Verwood both recorded away wins to keep themselves in contention with Shane Lock scoring the only goal of the game for Street at Ringwood while Verwood found things a little easier at Beatrice Avenue with a 5-1 victory over East Cowes Vics. – Sam Chilman, Ollie Davies, Jake Kelly, Alex Hancox and Harry Osman for the Potters- with Jimmi Burton the Vics marksman. Downton went down by the odd goal in three at home to Millbrook with Shaun Prentice’s goal not enough against strikes from James Lavender and Callum Drake that took the League new boys in to the top half of the table. Laverstock & Ford beat Whitchurch 3-2 at The Dell courtesy of goals from Archie Lovegrove, Russell Jones and Harrison Hale with the Jamboys reply coming from Nick Yeomans

and Grant Powell. Romsey maintained their current run of form with a best of three goal home win over New Milton – John Cole and Brad Strickland against one from Tyler Rudd as the visitors recent run of poor results continued. A bad week for Infinity ended with a 4-1 defeat at Fawley meaning they have now conceded more than fifty goals in the League so far. A welcome win for the Waterside club thanks to two goals from Jake Smith and singles from Dylan Knight and Jacob Sheath while Joel Francis was the lone Infinity scorer. A welcome win for Ash United as well with two goals from Zac Ashley-Simpson, very much the leading scorer for the Club, giving them victory over Totton and Eling and taking them out of the bottom three. Another week gone and Follands lead the way, no doubt there’s more twists and turns to come

HOLD THE WITH NON-LEAGUE NOTES BY THEBALLISROUND.CO.UK Lewes's first five games of this season saw them lose them all and hitting the bottom of the league. That certainly wasn't in the plan nor did their performances in some of those games warrant zero return. Results since have certainly been better although they are under no illusion this will be a tough season in a very competitive league. However, spare a thought for the fans of Stoke Gabriel Football Club who ply their trade in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division East, step 6 of the English National League structure. The club hail from the beautiful village of the same name in Devon on the banks of the River Dart, playing their home games at the modest Speedwell KIA Stadium. The club have played ten games as of the 19th October and lost the lot. I am sure there are other clubs that have yet to get a point (Ossett United in the Northern Premier League North West for instance or Mangotsfield United in the Southern League, South Division) but it is the nature of the defeats that have see them hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. Having been in 16th place when the 2019-20 season was curtailed by COVID-19, the club has seen personnel changes during the summer with players, coaches and committee members moving on, meaning that the squad is built around the club's Under18s side. "You can't win anything with kids" - the famous line uttered by Alan Hansen on the opening day of the 1995/96 season after Manchester United's Class of 92 had been beaten by Aston Villa. Never has such a true sentence been uttered in the case of Stoke Gabriel.

They kicked off the season with an away game at Torridgeside. They lost 14-0. 14 In their first home game of the season against Crediton United they did better, keeping the score down to 13-0. 0. Since then they have lost all eight games. There was a glimmer of hope last week that new signings would have a positive impact as they restricted Ivybridge Town to just three second half goals go but on Saturday they finished with ten men due to injuries against Plymouth Marjon who scored ten unanswered second half goals to make the final score 14-0. Whilst they recorded their biggest defeat of the season so far against third from bottom Bovey Tracey, they did get off the mark themselves in the 18-1 1 defeat and followed it up with another goal in the 9-1 9 defeat at Elburton Villa. Their star players so far? Seventeen year old goalkeeper Josh Organ, naturally. Whilst the young squad uad is finding life at the senior level tough, they are more than good enough playing at their own age level, winning three of their four league games so far. The village has an approximately 1,0001,000 year-old old yew tree in the churchyard of The Church of St Mary and St Gabriel, a church which has stood since Norman times. Legend has it that if you walk backwards seven times round the yew's main stem you will be granted a wish – I think now may be the time for the fans to start walking around that tree!
