ANDOVER NEW STREET v ASH UNITED TUESDAY 11th JANUARY 2022 KICK-OFF 7.45PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Welcome back to you all to Foxcotte Park for our re-arranged midweek fixture with Ash United. This evening we’re under the floodlights for what promises to be another keenly contested encounter. The Green Army have had a mixed start to the season so far, but they come to Andover on the back of a three-game winning run, so the Street will need to be on their mettle to ensure their unbeaten run at Foxcotte Park in the league continues. There’s plenty inside this evening’s issue including a match report on the previous game here against Whitchurch United and the thoughts of both manager Jamie Coleman and Football Chairman John Ward, and much more besides. Remember, if you have any feedback on the programme, please do get in touch with us. Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s important match against Ash United in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Green Army, including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Ash United that have made the journey to Andover this evening and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on tonight. Of course, this fixture quickly follows our postponed fixture last Saturday against East Cowes. I know everyone within the club was frustrated once again with the weather causing the postponement, but it is something we have to move on from and we are thankful that the revised fixture list has been kind to us, with the re-arranged game being on a Saturday, rather than a mid-week game. We have made that trip to the Isle of Wight in midweek once already this season when we played Cowes Sports, and thankfully we haven’t got to do it again, as we did not get back to Andover until gone 1am!

Blistering Our last home league game came against Whitchurch last Monday and another blistering first half display put us in control with goals from Ross Cook and Shane Lock. It was an all-round team performance, and we scored some quality goals.

Tremendous I thought the performance from the whole team on Monday was tremendous. Ross Cook and Cam Thatcher came back into the side, and both can be very pleased with their contributions. Their displays epitomised the strong and committed performance by each and every player and that was the basis for a deserved result in some difficult conditions. After this evening’s game we face another test on Saturday against league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins, who will provide stern opposition at their ground, Moon Park. However, given the levels of support we have received this season, I think your backing can really help us push further on as this campaign gets tougher. It is vital we focus on tonight’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us. I know that the Ash United players are going to be really up for this game, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good evening and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Ash United, here tonight for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable evening with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into the play-off places with our hard-fought victory over Whitchurch United last week – which I hope we can improve on tonight.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Tonight’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Although Ash have not been as consistent as, no doubt, their supporters would have liked, they have still

6

produced some good results – including a very useful home win against Fleet Spurs in their last game at the start of the year. We will of course need to be on our toes to ensure we can maintain our winning form.

Congratulations Congratulations also need to go to the side for picking up the Club of the Month award, which was presented last week and also further congratulations to Harry Lawton for winning Player of the Month for December. Harry has been a key player for us recently and hopefully

will continue his form into the New Year. We have a number of tough matches coming up with our trip to Bemerton Heath on Saturday and this is quickly followed up with a re-arranged match with Laverstock & Ford. Following our postponement of our trip to East Cowes, we now face them on the final day of the season, hopefully with promotion to play for.

HONOURS Wessex League Div 1: Runners-up 2017-18

One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on Ash United in another important game as we look to move into the top 4 IF we win this evening.

“WE’VE GOT OURSELVES INTO A GOOD POSITION – NOW IT’S UP TO US TO PUSH ON.”

After a great start last Saturday when we went 2-0 up against Whitchurch United, we had to withstand some pressure from the Jam Boys but although we could and perhaps should have been 4 or 5 up even by half-time, we defended well to preserve a clean sheet and the three points. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week. Michael Weatherall has come into the side for the last two games with Paddy out with injury and he has done well with 2 clean sheets. We’ve conceded just twice in the last three matches, and it is great to see that our defensive solidity is coming to the fore again, at a time when we need it most with some big games coming up against Bemerton Heath and Laverstock & Ford.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Given the run we’ve been on it will be easy to get carried away. After 1 defeat in the last eight league games that is no surprise. However, we have a strong and hungry management team, coaching staff and dressing room that will ensure we will not get complacent. As I’ve said, it’s a long old season and a lot can change.

All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on. This evening we take on Ash United, a club very much on a good bit of form after winning their last three matches, so we know that we will be in for a tough game this evening. Our recent form, especially at home, might mean we go into the match as favourites but that is nothing new to us. With Ash at the other end of the table I guess a lot of people will expecting us to win tonight. In my experience these are the games that are the toughest. We’ve already seen how competitive this league is, and that teams at the bottom can easily beat the teams at the top. Let’s hope that tonight isn’t one of those occasions. Get behind us once again tonight. Enjoy the game.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN THIS SATURDAY WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO LEAGUE LEADERS BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS AT MOON PARK

BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS WHO? Bemerton Heath

Harlequins, aka the Quins, from Moon Park, are the Street’s opponents on the 15th of January. Bemerton’s match against AFC Fawley, like most of the Wessex League, fell foul to the weather last Saturday and they currently lead the division with 54 points and are ahead of Andover Town and Folland Sports by 6 points. The Street are 10 points behind them with 2 games in hand and will need to take maximum points from those games to be just a point behind the Quins, not taking into account this fixture that could well give an indication on who will finish as champions and take the only automatic promotion spot. HOW THEY DOING? The Quins won their opening two matches at home against tonight’s opponents, Ash United, 2-1 and then 3-1 against Romsey Town. A 2-2 draw against local rivals Downton was followed up with a 7-2 thumping of Millbrook. Further wins against Amesbury, Fawley, Petersfield Town, East Cowes and Folland Sports came before a 2-1 defeat to Premier side Hamworthy United in the League Cup. Their first defeat came of a surprise in late October in a thrilling 5-4 encounter at Ringwood Town and then another defeat at New Milton Town by a 1-0 score line raised further eyebrows and a 0-0 draw at Laverstock & Ford kept the chasing pack within touch. However, the Quins would go on to win against Fleet Spurs, Ash United, Verwood Town, Newport (IOW) and a

10

thumping 8-0 win over Totton & Eling was backed up with a 5-0 win over Ringwood. A 1-1 draw with Romsey ended the year before a 3-0 win over Laverstock & Ford ensured they started 2022 well.

HOW TO GET THERE? Moon Park is 33

minutes or 25 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A303 towards Salisbury. At Countess Roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Amesbury Byp/A303, then at the Longbarrow roundabout take the first exit onto A360 then after 5.1 miles take the first exit on the roundabout and stay on the A360. Then just before half a mile take the first exit and stay on the A360 and then go straight through the next roundabout. Continue on Queen Alexandra Rd. Take Pembroke Rd to Hazel Close and the ground is at the end of the road.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

but it’s a game the Street would like to forget as we were thumped 9-1 in September 2019, with Mark Keogh sent off early in the first half, the Street battled well to get back to 1-1 before the Quins took advantage of the extra man in emphatic fashion. The Street had drawn 3-3 the month before in the FA Cup with Luke Hooper, Jason Silver and Matt Scott all finding the net. Callum Sweeney had missed a first half penalty before having to take over in goal from the injured George Baxter. The Street would win the replay 3-2 thanks to first half goals from Ilyas Warshow, Matt Scott and Gunner Yates.

welcome ASH UNITED

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Ash United Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Green Army make the journey to Foxcotte Park for the first time ever, after they were forced to join the Wessex League at the start of this season along with Fleet Spurs. This evening’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with Ash United looking to continue their recent fine form that has seen them win their last 3 matches against New Milton away (3-1), Whitchurch at home (4-0) and local rivals Fleet Spurs (3-0). However, Street will be looking to continue their fine form at home, with 9 wins and 1 draw in their 10 matches at Foxcotte Park, to maintain their promotion aspirations. The Green Army didn’t have the best of starts to their first season in Wessex League One when they lost their opening three matches against Bemerton Heath Harlequins, New Milton Town and Whitchurch United. Their first three points came with a 4-0 home win over Infinity and then this was followed up with a 4-3 thrilling win away at Ringwood Town. August ended with a surprising 1-0 defeat in the League Cup to Fleet Spurs.

To find out more about Ash United visit: www.pitchero.com/clubs/ashunited

September saw the Green Army lose 2-0 at home to Downton before an impressive 2-0 win over Wessex Premier side Hythe & Dibden saw Ash progress in the FA Vase. A narrow 2-1 league defeat at Verwood Town was quickly followed up with further progression in the Vase following a 5-3 penalty shootout success after a 2-2 draw with Whitchurch after 90 minutes. A 4-3 home defeat to East Cowes was followed up with heavy defeats to Millbrook and Romsey Town. North Greenford United would edge out the Green Army in the FA Vase and then Newport IOW would end October with a 3-0 win at the Shawfield Stadium. Ash would start November with a 2-0 win at Fleet and follow it up with a 2-0 win over Totton & Eling and then a 1-1 draw with Petersfield Town. Their progression continued against league leaders Bemerton Heath, with the Quins winning by a narrow 1-0 score line. However, four defeats on the trot against Andover Town (3-0), Folland Sports (3-0), Laverstock & Ford (3-1) and Fawley (2-1), put the Green Army on the back foot but they have since ended 2021 and started 2022 well. Their recent 3-0 win over Fleet Spurs was in front of a crowd of 227 with goals from Jordan Devanney, Ryan Green and Harley Webster.

After relocating, they rejoined the Surrey Senior League in 1976, In 1978 the Senior League became the Home Counties League, with Ash finishing as runnersup in its first season and winning the George Allen Memorial Cup. The league was rebranded as the Combined Counties League the following season, with Ash finishing as runners-up again. The 1981–82 season saw the league split into Eastern and Western Divisions, with Ash winning the Western section and the overall league title with a 3–0 aggregate win (1–0 at home, 2–0 away) against Malden Town in the championship play-off. The league then reverted to a single division, with Ash finishing in the top five for the next four seasons, before winning the title again in 1986–87. STREET 2-0 WHITCHURCH UNITED COOK 17, LOCK 24

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street started 2022 with a 2-0 win over neighbours Whitchurch United at Foxcotte Park. After a scrappy start the Street very much dominated possession. Ross Cook, back in the side after a three-week absence, controlled a long Reece Rusher cross, lost his footing, recovered and curled his shot past the angle of post and bar.

MOMENTS

Another Rusher cross was rather unconvincingly palmed clear by former Street keeper Chis Wing before the pressure paid off as early as the eleventh minute. Shane Lock collected the ball midway in the opposing half and the through ball split the defence with Ross Cook lifting the ball past the advancing Wing.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Another Lock pass sent Cameron Thatcher free on the left only for the shot to beat Wing and the far post before the score was doubled on 24 minutes. Cook fashioned a shooting chance for Harry Lawton, the shot was deflected over the keeper and Shane Lock turned the ball over the line with the defence completely flat footed. The first attack of note by the visitors sent Craig Rutledge clear on the right but he hesitated as goalkeeper Mike Weatherall narrowed the angle before scooping the ball wide of the post, Cook was inches wide from distance with Wing frantically back pedalling towards his goal and the striker followed that with a booking after a late challenge. Rusher was narrowly wide from the edge of the area before the half ended with a long and powerful run from Rutledge which ended through lack of support. The second half started in the manner of the first with a Rusher cross that evaded three green shirts and another that was headed narrowly wide by Matt Scott who had momentarily abandoned his defensive duties. Wing was a long way out of his area to deny Rusher and dealt confidently with a number of crosses but could do nothing with a twenty-five-yard piledriver from Zach Hine that crashed against the post and rebounded to safety. Robbie Owen was just too high at one end, after the ball had carelessly been given away, before Weatherall was at full stretch to hold a Cameron George effort at the other.

There were just two more efforts on goal before the final whistle. A Whitchurch corner caused a lengthy scramble in the sixyard box, with Thatcher hooking the ball off the line to prevent an own goal, and Wing acrobatically tipping an Owen header over www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet the crossbar.

ANDOVER LAUNDERETTE

Shane Lock Shane Lock was given license to roam around Foxcotte Park in a more advanced position in our last home game against Whitchurch United and the midfielder’s influence on the game was evident throughout.

The 28-year-old touched the ball more than any other Street player with 89 ‘actions’ according to statistical boffins at VEO. 65 per cent of those actions were deemed successful but, as his touch graphic shows the former Andover Town man popped up all over the field against the Jam Boys to deliver a fine performance. His most successful action was his goal which put the Street 2-0 up on 24 minutes, having exploited the deflection from Harry Lawton’s shot, to tap home after the ball deceived Whitchurch keeper Chris Wing. Lock also assisted in the opening goal on 17 minutes when his fine ball through led to Ross Cook to score past the exposed Wing to give the Street the lead. The midfielder’s pass accuracy rate reached 70 per cent, but what was most impressive was his ability to keep things ticking over in so-called ‘non-attacking’ moves. Lock was accurate with 19 of his 20 passes in non-attacking passages of play. Overall Lock received 44 passes from team-mates, only second to fellow midfielder Harry Lawton, who was given 57. The duo received more passes than any other player on the pitch, including the Whitchurch players, an interesting statistic given the pair’s involvement in the final third of the pitch in the formation the Street began with.

The victorious New Street side of 1993 after winning the North Hants Senior Cup against Stockbridge. Street went into a 2-0 0 lead in the opening five minutes thanks to a volley from Sean Rogers and the second the result of a goalmouth scramble converted by Chris Sutton. Stockbridge scored early in the second half but Sutton soon afterwards added to his tally t to make it 3-1. 1. Stockbridge grabbed a second goal 15 minutes from time thanks to midfielder Paul Appleton, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Street from claiming more silverware. The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith.

East Cowes continued to show some fight and netted their second of the match through their top scorer Jordan Browne.

Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by heavy defeats at Romsey and Christchurch. By the end of September the Street were just 1 point off top spot and were in 5th place. East Cowes were the next visitors and were second from bottom in 18th position with just 2 points out of 6 games.

Yates netted his second of the game on 84 minutes and four minutes later substitute Nic Turpin put in number six to complete the scoring. The victory would keep the Street in 5th place and how little did we know that they would go on to achieve promotion promot to the Wessex Premier for the first time in the club’s history.

The home side took just fifteen minutes to take the lead as Lock netted the opener. East Cowes however then came back into the game and equalised before half time after missing several clear chances.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS Baffins Milton Rovers aiming to join Horndean and Hamworthy in three-way tie at the top of the Wessex League

ALSO... Verwood appoint Darren Shepherd and Danny Tabor as co-managers

Rovers will move level on points with the top two if they can claim a seventh successive Premier Division victory against Bournemouth Poppies. The game was washed out last weekend at the PMC Stadium but has been hastily rearranged (7.45pm). Baffins normally play midweek home games on a Wednesday, but Rover’s boss Shaun Wilkinson explained: ‘Poppies actually turned up at the ground (on Saturday) before it was called off. We asked them if they could play midweek and they said they could play Tuesday, not Wednesday. As they’d come all that way, we basically let them pick the date. ‘With Hamworthy and Shaftesbury winning at the weekend, this is an important game. We’re top of the form table, but we’ve got two tricky games now (Baffins travel to Christchurch next Saturday). We’ll be saying to the players ‘don’t look at the league table - there’s no gimmes in this league.’ ‘It’s points over performance at this stage of the season but we still have to do the right things. ‘If we turn up, be professional and bring our ‘A’ game I don’t think there’s a team in the league who can live with us.’ It would be a major shock if Poppies avoided defeat. The Dorset club haven’t won for 15 league games, since a 2-1 victory against second bottom Amesbury in late September. They have only picked up two points from their last nine outings, one of which was a draw against Amesbury. Having recently signed veteran striker Craig McAllister, Wilkinson admits he would bolster Baffins’ first-ever serious Wessex title challenge with one more addition. ‘I’d like a defender, someone who could play anywhere across the back,’ he said. ‘I’ve only got out and out centre halves in Lee Molyneaux and Ed Sanders. We’ve got Josh Warren who’s a big asset, but he’s had long Covid and only played once all season.’ Wilkinson said Baffins would take promotion to the Southern League if they either won the title or finished runners-up and went up via a play-off. ‘I don’t think the club would ever turn it down,’ he remarked. ‘I think we’re a couple of years ahead of schedule. ‘There’s a long way to go yet. At the moment we’re contenders but any of the top seven are capable of putting together a run of eight or nine wins.’

36

Verwood Town have announced a new management team, bringing in Darren Shepherd and Danny Tabor from neighbours Wimborne Town. The Potters had been looking for a new manager since club legend Adie Arnold stepped down last month, with Arnold ending a near 30-year association with the club in order to retire from football. Shepherd and Tabor, alongside kit-man Paul Mitchell who has also joined the club, arrive from Wimborne, where they managed the club’s development side.

ROUND-UP Josh Bertie joins Dorchester Town from Andover Town on dual terms

FA Vase star Tom Price returns to US Portsmouth – with boss Tom Grice confessing: I did all I could NOT to re-sign him!

Boss Tom Grice has revealed he initially had no intention of bringing one of US Portsmouth’s FA Vase heroes back to the club. Goalkeeper Tom Price has returned to the Victory Stadium after being one of numerous players to follow ex-boss Glenn Turnbull to Moneyfields last summer. Price had started 14 of Moneys’ first 15 Wessex League games this season but lost his place last month after a 5-5 League Cup draw at Shaftesbury. Since then, Callum McGeorge has played in Moneys’ last four league games. Dorchester Town have added prolific striker Josh Bertie to their ranks on dual registration terms. British Virgin Islands international Bertie, 25, joins from Wessex League Division One title challengers Andover Town. Bertie has scored 31 goals in 26 games for the Bluebirds this campaign, and in October became Town's all-time top goal scorer. Scoring a brace against Fleet Town, in his 100th game for the Hampshire side, took his record to 56 goals. Bertie has since extended his tally to 71 in 112 games before Dorchester came calling. www.ansfc.co.uk

Grice said he knew Price wanted to leave Dover Road early last week but was not planning a move due to the form of young Dylan Kramer. That changed, though, when Kramer suffered a hamstring injury during last Tuesday’s Wessex loss at table topping Horndean. Grice tried to bring in a keeper for Saturday’s league game with Alresford but moves for Hawks’ Charlie Searle and Gosport’s Ellis Grant failed. In desperation, he put a message in a Wessex managers WhatsApp group chat on Friday - and Money’s boss Glenn Turnbull offered to waive the seven days’ notice if he wanted to sign Price. ‘It was totally my intention not to sign Pricey at all,’ Grice said. ‘I did speak to Tom, as he’s a friend of mine, and I said ‘Dylan’s my No 1, he’s been one of our best players this season. After Dylan got injured, I spent Wednesday and Thursday trying to find a keeper. I did everything I could NOT to sign Pricey! On the Friday Glenn phoned me up and offered Pricey. I think Tom’s glad to be back. Of all the players we lost last summer, Pricey was for me the biggest blow. He was probably the best out of all of them. He will be an asset to us on and off the pitch. We’re a young team and he’s got experience of playing at a higher level. It will be good to see him working with Dylan in training.’ Price will be USP’ seventh goalkeeper when he makes his second debut for the club in next Saturday’s home league game with Amesbury. Kramer has made 15 league appearances so far, while Damien Kelsall, Lewis Broughton, James Hedley, Roux Hardcastle and Owen Craig have also featured. He will be the 41st player used by US in a first team game - more than any of the other five Portsmouth area Wessex Premier clubs. Last season Price was one of the stars of US’ run to the Vase semis and Wessex League Cup final.

TOO MANY GAMES AT CHRISTMAS?

By Matt Badcock

Happy New Year and first we must ask: Is everything OK in the Premier League? It’s been difficult to open a newspaper, listen to the radio or watch the TV without hearing a topflight boss moaning about playing too many games over the festive period, bleating about a lack of players, not being able to use five subs in a game or even the League Cup schedule clogging up the calendar. Apparently, there is also concern about the fixture congestion after 18 games needed to be postponed in recent weeks. Although some welcome relief that UEFA will allow games to be played on the same nights as Champions League matches. Phew! That sound you can hear is a collective laugh from Non-League as a whole, including fixture secretaries who might lose twice that amount of games to bad weather in the space of three days. Look, it’s easy to take pot shots at the whinging managers. When they are paid as well as they are, have access to the best facilities in elite sports and can rotate their squads far more easily than they let on, they probably deserve a bit of dig in the ribs. Non-League managers and players will have a wry smile when thinking about the schedules their players, all while working proper day jobs around it, go through. I’ve always felt that if those at the top of the game are concerned about player welfare, then it should be listened to. It should also be pointed out that the TV money they benefit from is based on the fact they have to play a lot of games, particularly around the Christmas period where demand is high. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

But Christmas 2021 has also shown the interest for Non-League football, with crowds booming across the Pyramid. Four-figure crowds suddenly don’t seem all that unusual at Steps 4, 5 and even 6. And that’s key for clubs to boost the coffers. Festive football is such an important money spinner for all Non-League clubs where the pounds across the turnstiles and the second spend in the bar is so crucial. Fans flocking to grounds can probably be put down to a combination of factors. Apathy at the cost of higher football, thirst for live sport, people feeling comfortable in lower crowds are no doubt among a number of reasons. Hopefully people have also seen enough that they want to return regularly. There are plenty of games to come this season. And after the last two seasons were hit by Covid, you won’t hear much moaning about it down here. @AndoverNSfc

47

league look The top game in Division One was the Salisbury Derby at Bemerton where in front of an attendance exceeding three hundred the home side ended Laverstock & Ford’s recent successful run with a 3-0 victory courtesy of two goals from Ronan Clancy and one from Cameron Roach and strengthened their own position at the top of the table. This was also helped by Andover Town’s defeat at Petersfield. The two sides met a month or so ago at the Portway with Andover coming out on top by the odd goal in five, but Petersfield turned the tables with the same score line and bought Town’s long unbeaten run to an end. Aaron Akoman, Paul Agbeseyi and Brandon Jewell scored the home goals with Josh Bertie and an own goal making up Andover’s tally. With Newport not playing and Follands not in action until Tuesday, Andover New Street closed the gap at the top with a 2-0 win at home to Whitchurch that was more comfortable than the score suggests thanks to goals from Ross Cook and Shane Lock. Verwood returned to winning ways with a 3-2 win at near neighbours Ringwood Town courtesy of an Ollie Davis hat trick with Harry Smith claiming both the home goals. Two goals also for Jack Odam for Romsey which coupled with one from Charlie Rattley gave them a 3-2 win over Infinity for whom Jamie White and Danny Phillips were on the mark. New Milton continues to struggle in the League, going down 4-2 at home to Millbrook for whom Callum Drake and James Lavender added to two goals from Mark Barker while Charlie Turner and Luke Stone were on song for the Linnets. Fawley continue to move up the table after a 2-0 win on the Island at East Cowes Vics – Dylan Knight and Tom Munday on target – while the

48

ex-Combined Counties clash between Ash United and Fleet Spurs ended 3-0 in the home side’s favour. Harvey Webster, Jordan Devanney and Ryan Green with the goals with the visitors not helping themselves by collecting two red cards. On Tuesday promotion hopefuls Follands were held to a one all home draw by Downton with Sam Howe giving the visitors a half time lead and Jake Newton equalising after the break. Saturday’s matches were hit by the appalling weather, which meant only three games started on the day and one of those was abandoned at half time. The two completed games were in the Premier Division with a first half goal from Billy Walker giving Hamworthy the three points against AFC Stoneham, meaning that they are now level with Horndean at the top of the table. At Shaftesbury Mac Gange gave Hamble Club the lead at the break only for goals from Greg Peel, Aidan Shepherd and Ash Pope to turn the game in the home side’s favour. Shaftesbury remain in sixth place but closer to the top five. The abandoned game was at Test Park between Millbrook and Petersfield and thanks to all for their efforts in trying to get the game completed. All the postponements were down to the weather with the exception of the Laverstock & Ford v Newport match, which was called off in midweek whilst the home side resolve long standing administration problems. Sadly, three of the postponements saw clubs travel- one of over 120 miles round trip; only to have the game called off late in the day.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN The third Round of the FA Cup gets underway this weekend, arguably one of the most interesting stages of the competition. It is 150 years since the world’s oldest knockout cup was inaugurated, so the 2022 final is sure to be a special occasion. The cup was renowned for its romantic tales of bravery, heroic performances, and the spirit of the unexpected. That aspect of the competition seems to have been forgotten, giant-killings are hard to come by these days, and it is 42 years since West Ham United became the seventh and most recent second division (now Championship) team to lift the old trophy. The nearest we have to a cup final upset in recent years must be 2013’s victory by Wigan against Manchester City. It’s hard enough for teams outside the Premier to get as far as the last eight – in the past five years only three Championship sides (Bournemouth 2021, Swansea and Millwall in 2019), two League One and a nonleaguer (Lincoln) have managed to reach the quarterfinals. In the past 10 years, 63 of the 80 quarterfinalists have come from the Premier, 12 from the Championship, four from League One and there’s been a solitary non-league club. If you consider that the 1970s provided more surprises – three second division FA Cup winners – then a comparison with that decade may illustrate how the game has changed. The second tier has certainly

54

16 between 1970-71 and 1979-80. Some critics say the Premier clubs are not terribly interested in the FA Cup, but aside from fielding weakened sides – which are still too strong for most opponents – the facts don’t lie. In the past 10 years, the so-called “big six” clubs have filled 14 of 20 cup final places and since West Ham’s 1980 success, those half dozen clubs have won 83% of finals. West Ham, in 1980, won the FA Cup with a very decent team. Having been relegated in 1978, manager John Lyall had rebuilt his side and in 1979, added Queens Park Rangers’ Phil Parkes, Ray Stewart from Dundee United and Manchester United’s Stuart Pearson to his squad. West Ham’s cup run included some memorable victories against first division teams West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Everton. They went on to beat cup holders Arsenal who were contesting their third consecutive FA Cup final. A year later, the Hammers won the second division and reclaimed their place in the topflight. Can a Championship team win the FA Cup in the modern game? On average over the past five years, half of the division’s 24 teams fall at the third round and by the sixth round, there’s scarcely a team left. As the statistics confirm, the competition is being dominated by the elite clubs, so it really is time for one of those stories that created the magic of the FA Cup. Bring it on.
