ANDOVER NEW STREET v ASH UNITED TUESDAY 8th FEBRUARY 2022 KICK-OFF 7.45PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Welcome back to you all to Foxcotte Park for our re-arranged midweek fixture with Ash United. This evening we’re under the floodlights for what promises to be another keenly contested encounter. The Green Army have had a mixed start to the season so far, but they come to Andover on the back of a win over Totton, so the Street will need to be on their mettle to ensure their unbeaten run at Foxcotte Park in the league continues. There’s plenty inside this evening’s issue including a match report on the previous game against Millbrook on Saturday and the thoughts of both manager Jamie Coleman and Football Chairman John Ward, and much more besides. Remember, if you have any feedback on the programme, please do get in touch with us. Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s important match against Ash United in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Green Army, including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Ash United that have made the journey to Andover this evening and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on tonight. Our last home game saw us take on a Fawley side that made it a very tough game, but we collected all three points courtesy of substitute Shane Lock’s goal late in the second half. It was a game in which we showed all the attributes necessary to win; great pass and move football and a resilience when needed. Your support also helped, with your noise, when we were pushing towards the end, so thank you for that. That game saw us give a couple of debuts to new goalkeeper Jordi Wilson and striker Chris Flood. Both put in good shifts and helped us continue our fine form at home.

“IT WAS A GAME IN WHICH WE SHOWED ALL THE ATTRIBUTES NECESSARY TO WIN: GREAT PASS AND MOVE FOOTBALL AND A RESILIENCE

WHEN NEEDED”

Tremendous I thought the performance from the whole team on Saturday was tremendous against Millbrook. Reece Rusher may have got the headlines after scoring five goals and he did play well. But the whole teams display epitomised the strong and committed performance by each and every player and that was the basis for a deserved result in some difficult conditions. After this evening’s game we face another test on Saturday against Petersfield Town, who will provide stern opposition at their ground. However, given the levels of support we have received this season, I think your backing can really help us push further on as this campaign gets tougher. It is vital we focus on tonight’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us. I know that the Ash United players are going to be really up for this game, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good evening and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Ash United, here tonight for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable evening with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into the play-off places with our hard-fought victory over Whitchurch United last week – which I hope we can improve on tonight.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Tonight’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Although Ash have not been as consistent as, no doubt, their supporters would have liked, they have still

6

produced some good results – including a very useful home win against Fleet Spurs at the start of the year and also last Saturday’s win at Totton & Eling. We will of course need to be on our toes to ensure we can maintain our winning form.

Congratulations Congratulations also need to go to our Swifts side who confirmed their league title with a 4-0 victory over Silchester – thanks to a hat-trick from Liam Dufall and a further goal from Nic Turpin. Well done to the lads and to the management team led by Robbie Skeates.

We have a number of tough matches coming up with our trip to Petersfield on Saturday and this is quickly followed up with a re-arranged match with Andover Town, which promises to be a HUGE game. One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on Ash United in another important game as we look to move into the top 4.

“WE’VE GOT OURSELVES INTO A GOOD POSITION – NOW IT’S UP TO US TO PUSH ON.”

After a great start last Saturday when then went 1-0 down against Millbrook, we then played extremely well against the wind and turned our pressure into goals thanks to two quick strikes from Reece. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week. We have made some important signings recently to improve what is already a strong squad with Jordi Wilson, Chris Flood and Joe Wright signing last week. Chris Flood got on the scoresheet on Saturday against Millbrook when he was setup by Reece and Jordi made a couple of excellent saves during the game.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Given the run we’ve been on it will be easy to get carried away. After 1 defeat in the last 14 league games that is no surprise. However, we have a strong and hungry management team, coaching staff and dressing room that will ensure we will not get complacent. As I’ve said, it’s a long old season and a lot can change.

All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on. This evening we take on Ash United, a club very much looking to build on their win at Totton last Saturday, so we know that we will be in for a tough game this evening. Our recent form, especially at home, might mean we go into the match as favourites but that is nothing new to us. With Ash at the other end of the table I guess a lot of people will expecting us to win tonight. In my experience these are the games that are the toughest. We’ve already seen how competitive this league is, and that teams at the bottom can easily beat the teams at the top. Let’s hope that tonight isn’t one of those occasions. Get behind us once again tonight. Enjoy the game.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN THIS SATURDAY WHEN THEY TRAVEL EAST TO FACE PETERSFIELD TOWN AT THE SOUTHDOWNS BUILDERS STADIUM

PETERSFIELD TOWN WHO? Petersfield Town, aka the Rams, from The Southdowns Builders Stadium, are the Street’s opponents on the 12th of February. Petersfield lost 3-0 last Saturday against current league leaders Bemerton and they currently sit in 13th place with 27points and are ahead of tonight’s opponents Ash United by 2 points, although the Green Army have 2 games in hand, which includes tonight’s fixture. The Rams went into the game against Bemerton on the back of a 3-0 win over Totton & Eling and an impressive 2-1 win at Wessex Premier side Horndean in the Portsmouth Senior Cup. HOW THEY DOING? The Rams lost their opening two matches against Totton & Eling, 3-2 and then 4-1 at home against Newport IOW. A 20 win over Fleet Spurs was followed up with a 41 defeat to New Milton Town. A 2-2 draw with Laverstock & Ford ended August. Further defeats against Bemerton, the Street and Folland Sports came before a 3-1 victory over Millbrook, thanks to a Brandon Jewell brace and Jake Bourton with the goals. Following a 2-0 away victory against Ringwood Town and a 1-0 win over Whitchurch, the Rams then went six league games without a win. This poor run was ended with a 3-0 home win over East Cowes and was followed up with a 4-1 win over Infinity and an impressive 3-2 home win over Andover Town. The Rams did narrowly lose 1-0 at Newport IOW and also a 2-0 home defeat to Laverstock & Ford.

HOW TO GET THERE? Love Lane is 54 minutes or 40 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A303 towards Basingstoke. Join the A34 towards Winchester and after 8 miles, take the 2nd exit at the roundabout onto the A272. At the Spitfire roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Petersfield Road/A31. At Percy Hobbs Roundabout, take the 4th exit and stay on Petersfield Rd/A31. Keep left to continue on A272. At the next roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Winchester Rd. Then at the next roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on Winchester Rd. Then continue onto Station Road, take the slight right at Ramshill and then take the slight right onto Tor Way/B2070. Love Lane is on the left. HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

but it’s a game the Rams would like to forget as we were triumphed 7-1 in September, with Shane Lock scoring a hat-trick and further goals coming from Reece Rusher, Michael Davis, Lloyd Thompson and Josh Jeffery. Max Paddon scored the Rams consolation. The Rams won their previous game at Foxcotte Park with a 1-0 victory over the Street in September 2020 thanks to a late Scott Kinge own goal. The Street’s last game at Love Lane saw a 4-2 victory, with Luke Hooper scoring in the 33rd minute. Petersfield then took a 2-1 lead early in the second half before Jason Silver equalised for Street and then a rare Matt Marriner goal gave the Street a 3-2 lead and Shane Lock sealed a 4-2 win in the 94th minute.

welcome ASH UNITED

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Ash United Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Green Army make the journey to Foxcotte Park for the first time ever, after they were forced to join the Wessex League at the start of this season along with Fleet Spurs. This evening’s re-arranged fixture promises to be an entertaining encounter with Ash United looking to back up their win on Saturday at Totton & Eling. However, Street will be looking to continue their fine form at home, with 10 wins and 2 draws in their 12 matches at Foxcotte Park, to maintain their promotion aspirations. The Green Army didn’t have the best of starts to their first season in Wessex League One when they lost their opening three matches against Bemerton Heath Harlequins, New Milton Town and Whitchurch United. Their first three points came with a 4-0 home win over Infinity and then this was followed up with a 4-3 thrilling win away at Ringwood Town. August ended with a surprising 1-0 defeat in the League Cup to Fleet Spurs. September saw the Green Army lose 2-0 at home to Downton before an impressive 2-0 win

over Wessex Premier side Hythe & Dibden saw Ash progress in the FA Vase. A narrow 2-1 league defeat at Verwood Town was quickly followed up with further progression in the Vase following a 5-3 penalty shootout success after a 2-2 draw with Whitchurch after 90 minutes. A 4-3 home defeat to East Cowes was followed up with heavy defeats to Millbrook and Romsey Town. North Greenford United would edge out the Green Army in the FA Vase and then Newport IOW would end October with a 3-0 win at the Shawfield Stadium. Ash would start November with a 2-0 win at Fleet and follow it up with a 2-0 win over Totton & Eling and then a 1-1 draw with Petersfield Town. Their progression continued against league leaders Bemerton Heath, with the Quins winning by a narrow 1-0 score line. However, four defeats on the trot against Andover Town (3-0), Folland Sports (3-0), Laverstock & Ford (3-1) and Fawley (2-1), put the Green Army on the back foot but they have since ended 2021 and started 2022 well. A 3-0 win over Fleet Spurs was in front of a crowd of 227 with goals from Jordan Devanney, Ryan Green and Harley Webster. However, backto-back defeats to Romsey Town and Ringwood Town quickly followed and they also lost 6-0 to Metropolitan Police in the Surrey Premier Cup.

They won the league in 1948–49, 1951–52, 1964–65 and 1966–67. In 1968 they moved up to the Surrey Senior League but had to drop out of the league three years later when they were forced to leave their Ash Common Ground. FOLLAND SPORTS 1-1 STREET BANHIRE 17

HOOPER 79

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street earned a hard-fought point at fellow promotion challengers Folland Sports, despite trailing 1-0 at half-time and with only 10 men after Ross Cook was sent-off. The game was slow to get going – three injury stoppages in the opening five minutes did not help - and the first real action saw visiting goalkeeper Mike Weatherall confidently claim a dangerous free kick. The home side’s Augustine Banhire, who was a threat all afternoon, came off worse in a collision with Weatherall after chasing a through ball and the keeper then palmed away a fierce drive from Fabio Manuel. Street’s first attack of note saw a Ross Cook shot deflected for a corner, the first of three in quick succession that came to nothing, before the opening goal after eighteen minutes. Banhire won, what looked from the side lines, a rather soft free kick on the edge of the D and then added insult to injury as far as the visitors were concerned by cleverly curling the ball round the wall and inside the post Both Reece Rusher and Luke Hooper tested home goalkeeper Sam Webb before Will Genge missed a golden opportunity at the other end, lifting the ball over the bar after Weatherall parried an effort from former Street player Ilyas Warshow. Banhire found the net again, but the offside flag curtailed the celebrations, Hooper was denied by Webb’s legs and Cook was well stopped by Connor Rowe – which turned out to be the striker’s last positive action in the game. On the brink of half time something happened off the ball, Cook was infuriated and in the current vernacular, “lost it” and was shown a deserved red card. On the restart a Manuel shot was saved at the expense of a corner and Hooper was stopped by weight of numbers on reaching the area as the visitors made the better start before the home side should have extended their lead. Weatherall did extremely well to deny Banhire at point blank range, but Genge lifted the loose ball over both the keeper and the bar. Banhire was, not for the first time, denied by Wetherall as the game moved in to the final ten minutes with the scores suddenly level. Rusher’s long diagonal run took him to the bye line on the right and the low cross was coolly slotted past Webb by Luke Hooper, a reward for the effort and running of both players over the ninety minutes. The home side pressed desperately to try and restore their advantage, but the visiting defence stood firm, with substitute Adam Pearson winning most of the aerial duels, and despite some five or six minutes of stoppage time, they had to settle for a share facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet of thewww.ansfc.co.uk points.

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street rediscovered their shooting boots and came back from conceding the opening goal to remind all that they are still very much part of the Division One promotion race. Street started brightly with two early corners and home keeper Ed Kitcher tipped a Shane Lock effort over the bar and parried a fierce Harry Lawton drive, though he may not have known too much about the latter as it flew through a crowded area. Morgan Callaway glanced a header just wide for the home side before Kitcher rescued his side again, denying Reece Rusher at point blank range after Chris Flood made the opening.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

The visitors were looking the more dangerous but needed to make their pressure count and when the first goal of the game came midway through the half it went to the home side. Street lost the ball in midfield, the through ball down the middle split the defence and a Mark Barker drive from the edge of the box put the home side in front. Kitcher produced a superb save to keep out a Flood header and Street did not make the most of a series of crosses and corners until the 35th minute when a corner was only cleared to the edge of the area and Reece Rusher’s low drive found the corner of the net. One goal quickly became two as a cross from the left found the far side of the home defence totally absent and Rusher had time and space to put the visitors in front. Wilson held a cross under pressure and Flood was narrowly wide before the half time whistle.

After eighteen minutes in the second half further pressure from Street told as Rusher picked the ball up on the right touchline and cut inside before firing low past Kircher, who perhaps could have expected more from his defenders. Four minutes later Rusher again came in from the right, the original cross or shot was blocked only for the winger to coolly find Chris Flood on the edge of the sixyard box and he made it four with his first goal for the club. Rusher was inches away after a good advantage by the referee before Street made it five just after the half hour, Rogers was again involved in midfield and the through ball gave Rusher the chance to coolly round the stranded goalkeeper. Millbrook occasionally did not help themselves by trying to play the ball out of the area and the irrepressible Rusher seized on to a misplaced pass for his fifth and his side’s sixth goal. That was after forty minutes but there was still time for number seven as Joe Rogers rounded the overworked Kitcher and rolled the ball in to the empty net. The final whistle came as a relief to all, albeit for differing reasons, and signified a www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet comfortable win for the visitors.

NON-LEAGUE NEEDS YOU!

For the past three seasons I have been involved in volunteering and helping out with Non-League teams alongside my studies. Without Volunteers no Non-League side would be able to possibly function, which is why I would encourage more people to volunteer as the reward is not just colossus for the club, you're helping out with but for yourself also. Since the age of 12 I discovered I had a passion for Non-League football as soon as I attended my first ever game, it was a 0-0 draw between my local club Basingstoke Town and Havant and Waterlooville in the Conference South. It may have not been an encapsulating experience for many, but it was for me! I was in awe with the whole match day experience from the close connections between players and fans, the pulsating, passionate and loud atmosphere as well as the kindness of all around. I felt at one with NonLeague football and realised that it was soon to be an addiction which turned into one of my all-time favourite hobbies and passions.

26

Without Non-League football I cannot imagine what my life would be like, quite literally speaking. After having watched the Dragons for a few seasons I realised that I had a burning passion also for writing football. At this time, I had been running an Arsenal football fan page on Instagram called Gooner Liam Harding for a couple of years, which accumulated a fair number of followers and I realised that I should delve outside of this arena. Into one which would benefit others as well as myself-I turned to Non-League football teams and their programmes. One of the first clubs I contacted was Hendon, due to the connection it had with my Great Granddad Ted Drake who managed the club in the late 1940s after a successful career at Arsenal as Striker. His time as Dons manager proved to be a steppingstone that avalanched him into winning the title with Chelsea in 1955. So, I asked if I could write an article about him and the club accepted my request, offering me the opportunity to write more articles for the match day programme from that day onwards which I’ll never look back on! As many will know the official match day programme for clubs at this level would simply not be produced to such great quality which it is without the aid of volunteers. Due to the fact that the vast majority of Non-League teams operate on a part time basis apart from a few acceptances in the National League.

Soon afterwards I contacted Hartley Witney, Woking, Slough Town, Kingstonians, Paulton Rovers and various other Non-League teams from up and down the country to help out with writing Match day articles for. One day I was even invited to Salisbury to go and watch a game for free in the press box and write an article about my match day experience which turned out to be a thrill and a very cherish able experience at their expense. In April 2019 after Basingstoke were relegated from the Southern Premier after their final game at the Camrose losing 1-2 to Taunton Town, a very sorrowing occasion after having watched them only two seasons before being demoted from the National League South. The club were forced to play down at Winchester City's ground in order to carry on surviving in the now Southern League Division One South, which meant that every other week myself and my Granddad would have to make the 19-mile trip just to be able to carry on supporting them. It was at this point that the Announcer stepped down and I stepped up to volunteer and help out the club representing it with pride and passion for a season. I couldn’t have felt any more joyful communicating to all fans at the game through a microphone in a small garden shed educating them on fixtures, team line ups, substitutions and goal scorers. Without the travelling of the fans and the volunteers the club would have gone bust as little revenue was being made through ticket money.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

It was then that made me realise that Volunteers can be the difference between life and death for a Non-League club. Fortunately, as of the 2020/21 season which folded rapidly due to Covid-19 Basingstoke returned to playing football within the Town at Winklebury. While ongoing negotiations await a return to the Camrose or a like-for-like ground between the Basingstoke and Deane Council and football club. As well as previous owner Rafi Razzack who evicted them from the Camrose being refused to go forward with his 89 house and caring home application on the Camrose ground nearly a year ago. Recently I have not been as busy volunteering due to attending Solent University since September and enduring a Sport Journalism course, to link up my passion of writing with my career goal of getting into the Sport Journalism industry. Nevertheless, I was still able to find loopholes which allowed me to carry on doing so in some shape or form helping out with recording post-match interviews for Whitchurch United. Another kind and friendly team this time in the Wessex League Division One, currently nesting 12th in the table. It made me realise that with so little time with part time work as well you can still manage to volunteer if you are willing and wanting to, and that time is not just of an essence.

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to a previous clash with Folland Sports in 2017 17.

Andover New Street 2-1 Folland Sports 12th September 2017 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by a heavy defeat at Romsey and a narrow exit of the FA Vase at Tadley Calleva. The distraction of the League Cup gave manager John Smith the opportunity to give some of the fringe players a start wityh Nic Turpin making a rare start up-front. Fellow League One side Folland Sports were the visitors under the Foxcotte Park floodlights. The Planemakers were struggling near the foot of the table with 4 points from their opening 6 matches. Street started the game well and Turpin perhaps should have done better when he blasted wide in the opening minute with just the keeper to beat. The Street continued to create chances with Zac Hine, Jazz Beavis and Gunner Yates all going close to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS Fareham striker Gary Austin closing in on another milestone ahead of potentially calling time on his prolific non-league career Gary Austin has one regret ahead of potentially calling time on his playing career. It has nothing to do with the fact he was released by Portsmouth after a few years in the Blues’ academy when he was a teenager.

ALSO... AFC Portchester strike star Lee Wort's third chance to reach significant season goal milestone in Wessex Premier battle with Bashley

Instead, the Fareham Town striker wishes he had spent the whole of his adult playing days at Cams Alders. As it was, he had started out at Horndean in 2005 before following boss Mike Benfield to Fareham two years later. He later had spells under Dave Carter at both Horndean and Moneyfields. After playing for Moneys in the Southern League, Austin returned to Fareham in the summer of 2018. Now 36, he confesses this might be his last season for the Reds. If it is, it could be one to remember. Last weekend, he celebrated his 350th competitive appearance for Fareham, having made his debut in August 2007. The breakdown was as follows - 224 Wessex League starts, 49 league sub appearances, 63 cup starts, and 14 cup sub outings. Coming on as a sub, he struck late on to give his side a 3-3 draw. It was his 96th competitive Fareham goal. Austin is aiming to become only the 10th Fareham player ever to score a century of goals for the club. He is currently 11th in the all-time list - own goals (120) are eighth overall - with Micky Swain (103) immediately ahead of him. According to stats compiled from the Wessex League page on the FA’s FullTime website, the forward has netted 204 times in league and cup action for Horndean, Fareham and Moneyfields (but only when the latter were a Wessex club). Austin also has a chance to reach the first cup final during his Fareham career. To do so, the Reds must knock out ‘El Creekio’ rivals AFC Portchester in a mouth-watering Wessex League Cup semi-final at Cams Alders on March 22.

36

Strike ace Lee Wort will be looking to make it third time lucky in his bid to chalk up a magnificent AFC Portchester goal milestone this season on Saturday. The Royals marksman has stood on 29 goals for the campaign in his side's past two outings - failing to find the net in trips to AFC Stoneham or Amesbury in order to take him through the 30-goal barrier. Wort, whose 29 strikes have come in 34 appearances this term, had the ball in the net in the midweek 2-0 win at bottom-side Amesbury - only for his effort to be ruled out for offside. And after being denied on a couple of other occasions, boss Dave Carter is finally hoping to see his hitman reach 30 goals when they entertain Wessex League Premier sixth-placed Bashley on Saturday.

ROUND-UP Smallbrook flood damage headache for speedway and Ryde Saints The extensive flooding which hit Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde after road improvement contractors accidentally burst a mains water pipe, is causing huge headache for Island Speedway and Ryde Saints Football Club chiefs who share use of the sports facility. With Smallbrook's pitch lying on a clay layer, drainage this time of the year tends to be a relatively slow process, so this flood will be a blow to the club — and Newport Football Club who groundshare this season — in their efforts to get games on. Ryde Saints chairman Jamie Humm said: "Our drainage ties in to the stadium site's main drainage system, so an assessment will need to be carried out in due course to see what damage may have been done to the drainage network as shale was washed into it. "It's going to be a bit of a wait and see about what this flooding has had on our drainage and pitch playability." www.ansfc.co.uk

FA issues update on Brockenhurst's FA Vase fifthround tie with either Athletic Newham or Littlehampton

The FA have commented on the confusion surrounding Brockenhurst's FA Vase fifth round tie. The Badgers had initially been drawn away to face Athletic Newham in the fifth round, before reports emerged that the London-based side had played two different suspended players in two separate ties. Charges were subsequently raised by the FA, as Athletic Newham were charged twice for the separate offences, with the FA telling the Daily Echo: “It is alleged that the club played a suspended player against Abbey Rangers FC in the Third Round Proper on Saturday 11 December 2021, and played a separate suspended player versus Littlehampton Town FC in the Fourth Round Proper on Saturday 15 January 2022." On Thursday evening, Brockenhurst and Littlehampton were informed that Littlehampton had been reinstated into the competition - subject to an appeal by Athletic Newham. That appeal has now been made, with both clubs tweeting that the fixture was back in limbo. After being approached for comment by the Daily Echo, the FA stated: "Athletic Newham FC has been removed from The FA Vase for a breach of the competition’s Rule 15(d) that occurred during a tie against Littlehampton Town FC in the Fourth Round Proper on Saturday 15 January 2022. "Athletic Newham FC denied a charge in relation to fielding a suspended player during this tie but The FA’s National Game Competitions Sub-Committee found it to be proven during a subsequent hearing after considering the evidence. Littlehampton Town FC was awarded the tie and reinstated into the competition by the Committee and is now scheduled to play Brockenhurst FC at home in the Fifth Round Proper on Saturday 12 February 2022 subject to any appeal by Athletic Newham FC. The separate charge in relation to allegedly fielding a suspended player against Abbey Rangers FC in the Third Round Proper on Saturday 11 December 2021 was withdrawn following receipt of evidence from Athletic Newham FC." Whilst the FA did confirm that one of the charges had been withdrawn, they did not comment on whether an appeal had been made - despite the updates from Brockenhurst and Littlehampton.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 GOALKEEPERS OF ALL TIME.... 10 GORDON BANKS

Gordon Banks is widely regarded as the greatest England goalkeeper. The Sheffield-born shot-stopper died in 2019 at the age of 81 and will be forever remembered for that save against Brazil in the 1970 World Cup. Producing a save that stopped the world, Banks pulled off an incredible reflex save against the powerful and directive header from Pele - with fans and pundits around the world dubbing it 'the save of the century'.

8

PETER SCHMEICHEL

Alongside Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's most legendary goalkeepers.

The world-class Dane was one of the best reflex savers that the world has ever produced, and won five league titles with Manchester United, as well as the Champions League in 1999. He is among the all-time greatest footballers in the history of Scandinavian football and is widely known for his trademark shouts at defence to command them.

7 OLIVER KAHN

9

EDWIN VAN DER SAR

Edwin van der Sar was a truly outstanding goalkeeper who arguably shone brightest during the final years of his career with Manchester United.

Saving here, there and everywhere, the Dutchman was a force between the sticks for the Red Devils where he won four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

Oliver Kahn is best remembered for his 14-year spell with Bayern Munich, where he won multiple titles including eight Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League. Kahn was a runner-up with Germany at the 2002 World Cup but won the Golden Ball that tournament. He also finished third in the voting for both the 2001 and 2002 Ballon d'Or awards.

Before United, he also starred for Ajax in the 1990s before moving on to Juventus and Fulham.

6

PETR CECH

Arguably the greatest goalkeeper of the Premier League era, Petr Cech won four league titles with Chelsea, plus the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. Cech was as important as John Terry in their superlative defensive record between 2004 and 2006, in which they conceded just 15 and 22 goals in back-to-back Premier League title wins. The 38-year-old spent the final four years of his career with Arsenal, although he is listed as Chelsea's current emergency goalkeeper.

38

5

MANUEL NEUER

Manuel Neuer, an unorthodox but supremely talented goalkeeper, has enjoyed huge success with Bayern Munich and Germany over the past decade. The 35-year-old is one of the greatest and most decorated goalkeepers in the world and was the best German footballer in the first half of the 2010s. It's not unusual to see him 30 plus yards off his line, too, playing a sort of sweeper-keeper role - making him one of the bravest and most confident goalkeepers we've ever seen.

3

GIANLUIGI BUFFON

Gianluigi Buffon was the greatest goalkeeper in the world in the 2000s and is considered by many as the greatest Italian shot-stopper ever, even above the great Dino Zoff.

4

DINO ZOFF

Dino Zoff is one of the best goalkeepers the world has ever seen - and that's a fact.

Still going strong at the age of 43, Buffon is a muchloved figure in the world of football. The Juventus legend played 178 times for Italy between 1997-2018 and lifted the World Cup in 2006. He is also the all-time most capped player for Italy and has made around 350 clean sheets in first-level club games - just ten behind Zoff. Maybe he's still playing at 43 for his love of the game or to break Zoff's record, who knows?

The Italian, now 79 years old, famously played for the likes of Napoli and Juventus. He won the World Cup in 1982 and the European Championship 14 years earlier. Incredibly, he boasts the record for having kept a clean sheet the longest amount of time (1,142 minutes) from September 1972 to June 1974. To put his tremendous career into context, he has kept 360 clean sheets from 720 first-level club games, which is truly outstanding.

2

IKER CASILLAS

The Champions League, European Championship and World Cup, you name it, and Iker Casillas has won it. His trophy haul says a lot and the rest of the talking was done by his sheer brilliance showcased on the pitch. Best remembered for his glittering 16-year senior career with Real Madrid, Casillas played 725 times for Los Blancos before moving to FC Porto in 2015. Casillas was also Spain's first-choice goalkeeper during the country's most successful period in their history between 20082012, when La Roja won two European Championships and the World Cup. www.ansfc.co.uk

1 LEV YASHIN

Lev Yashin is, without a shadow of a doubt, the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the game and is regarded as Soviet Union's greatest football ever. One of football's truly legendary names, Yashin spent his entire professional career with Dynamo Moscow, but it was his performances at international level with the Soviet Union that caught the world's attention. During his career, he had stopped around 150 penalty kicks, which is the best record of all-time, while keeping an incredible 270 clean sheets from approximately 420 career games played. More importantly, he remains the only goalkeeper in history to win a Ballon d'Or and it is likely that it will be some time before that is replicated.

NON-LEAGUE & SOCIAL MEDIA

By Jon Couch

So, after much deliberation, doubt and concern, England C is back – and in a whole new guise.

“I would definitely recommend England C to any young Non-League players who are aspiring to move forward in their careers.”

It’s been two-and-a-half years since Paul Fairclough led out Non-League’s Young Lions with many fearing that crippling FA finances from the pandemic may spell the end of the institution which has had young semiprofessionals dreaming of representing their country since 1979.

Thankfully, calls for a reunification of the England C post-Covid have been heard and last week it was announced that the Three Lions would return to play their first game since June 2019 when they take on Wales C at Caernarfon Town on Wednesday, March 30.

You needn’t go far to realise just what donning those Three Lions means to a NonLeague footballer. Players now playing in the top-flight of English pride have done so with immense pride and speak fondly about how the experience helped develop them as a player – and as a man. Only a few weeks ago, NLP columnist Tony Incenzo spoke to QPR’s former Watford striker Andre Gray about his six England C caps won between 2012 and 2014 while playing for Luton Town. “I loved my time with England C,” he said. “We travelled to countries that we probably never would have visited otherwise and saw some unreal places. The support from the coaching staff was really hands on and they were very good at the diet and psychology side of things. People might be surprised by how professional the England C set-up is run. It was such an honour to be capped at international level as a Non-League player. I found it a great opportunity to test myself against top young footballers from places like Russia and Turkey. Most of the players around me in Paul Fairclough’s squad moved into the Football League and the Premier League. I am sure that my England C appearances helped me progress as a footballer. The whole experience prepared me towards playing at a much higher level of club football.

As he has since 2003, Paul Fairclough will once again take the reins – but this time has an altogether different job on his hands with his squad selections no longer limited to players under the age of 23. That means, the veteran former Barnet and Stevenage chief literally has the pick of NonLeague football to choose a squad from and with the likes of Wrexham, Stockport and Chesterfield all spending big and taking the National League to a whole new level, that’s a pretty mouth-watering task. Interestingly, this new England C set-up will no longer by funded by the Football Association but instead jointly by the National League and the Trident Leagues at Steps 3 and 4. The FA have remained pretty tight-lipped on the reason for this but, thinking about it, with the TV connections that the National League have, could it be that the England C team begin to get the exposure that they deserve? This, in turn, can resurrect careers and propel new ones with players of all levels vying for their chance to go under the spotlight. At The NLP, we are naturally delighted to see the England C team back in action and can’t wait to see how the new venture unfolds. It may have taken a while, but the Three Lions are roaring again. @AndoverNSfc

league look Plenty of goals yesterday, especially in the Premier Division, and also a change at the top of the Premier Division table. Leaders Horndean went down 2-1 to Blackfield & Langley on the Waterside thanks to goals from Owen Fee and Luke Gray outweighing a single effort from Ash Howes, leaving Hamworthy United with the chance to take over the number one spot.

The Hammers surprisingly dropped two points in midweek but there were no problems this time round as two goals apiece from Matt Neale and Bailey Rowe added to singles from Eddie Hodge, Max Wilcock, Cameron Munn and Steve Devlin gave them an 8-1 victory over Hamble Club for whom Ryan Wilkins notched the solitary consolation. Brockenhurst kept in touch with a 4-2 success at Bournemouth, a double from Mitch Speechley-Price adding to goals from Kieran O’Donnell and Christie Ward while Kyle Graham and Sami Garcia were on target for the Poppies. After a poor run of results Baffins Milton Rovers returned to winning ways, beating bottom Club Amesbury Town 3-1. Ed Sanders, Alex Przespolewski and Tommy Scutt secured the three points with Josh Moore the Wiltshire side’s goal scorer. Bashley, very much one of the form sides at present, marched on with Bue Bennett, Adam Grange and Lewis Ross giving them a 3-1 win over Alton for whom Oli Graham was on the scoresheet. Fareham’s propensity for both scoring and conceding goals surfaced again as they went down 5-0 to a rampant AFC Stoneham at Cams Alders. Duarte Martins with two, Scott Hills, Will Wiseman and Jim Orvis completing the nap hand. AFC Portchester were the day’s highest scorers, hitting nine without reply against Christchurch with the attendance, as at Fareham, over the 200 mark. Regular scorers Rafa Ramos and Lee Wort led the way with four and three respectively and Brad Lethbridge and Harvey Aston were also on the mark. Shaftesbury made the long journey to Alresford and returned home with all three points thanks to a Gary Bowles goal and

Portland United and Cowes Sports shared six goals with both sides probably happy with a point. Troy Walbridge, Ben Morris and Oli Lowes were the home marksmen with the Cowes response coming from Jack Barsdell, Ji Nash and an Own Goal. With all respect to those already mentioned possibly the result of the day in the Division was Hythe & Dibden’s 3-1 win at Moneyfields. Filippos Terzidis, Sam Woodward and Ben Slade were the happy goal scorers with Tyler Moret the Moneys marksman. Bemerton Heath continue to lead Division One after goals from Cameron Roach, Danny Young and Jake Burgess gave them a 3-0 win over Petersfield at Moon Park and Newport regained second spot with a similar score line against Ringwood Town, Jordan Browne, Joe Craig and Joe Butcher on target. The clash between Folland Sports and Andover Town ended with a best of three goals win for the home side with goals from new signing Jamie White and Fabio Manuel, one of which was in the last minute, after Brendan Holmes had given the away side the lead. Andover New Street were the highest scorers and also possessed the day’s top individual scorer as they won 7-1 at Millbrook. Mark Barker gave the home side the lead but Reece Rusher with five, Chris Flood and Joe Rogers made it a comfortable afternoon for the visitors at a windy Test Park. Both Romsey and Downton came back from midweek defeats with victories. Romsey crossed to the Island and defeated East Cowes Vics 3-1 with two goals from Ollie Jenkins and one from Owen Holloway proving too much for the lone Vics strike from Keiron Hancock. Downton completed the double over Whitchurch, scoring three without reply through Shaun Prentice two and Sam Howe. Verwood gained a 4-2 win over Fawley at Potterne Park with Ollie Davies two, Matt Vining and Jack Broad their scorers. Dylan Knight claimed both the Oilers goals. Finally, no joy for either of the two bottom Clubs as they both lost at home. Fleet Spurs found New Milton too strong as Charlie Turner (2), Chris Long and Noel McCarthy-Gardiner gave the visitors a 4-1 win, Tom White claiming the lone Spurs goal.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN The challenges facing top-level football continue to escalate, ranging from macroeconomic to political and social concerns on a global scale. The finances of clubs and leagues are coming under considerable pressure. Just as banks, nation states and corporates sought alternative sources of support during the financial crisis of 2008-10, football is now turning to different and less traditional avenues of financing. The recent aborted discussions around a takeover of Bradford City by a group of investors aiming to harness the potential of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) demonstrated that change is coming.

Increasingly, hedge funds, private equity firms and family offices are getting involved in football, offering investment where historic lenders may no longer be prepared to tread with comfort. The reputation of alternative investors has always been a sector with a short-term perspective, one that pursues quick returns and has a limited attention span. Given football is an industry that has hordes of stakeholders, the dynamic between supporters and professional investors from London, New York, Asia and the Middle East, is not necessarily comfortable. Invariably, Wall Street and the Square Mile are mistrusted by football fans. But sport and private equity are not such unnatural bed fellows, in fact, firms have been dipping their toes in the water for some years. The pandemic has arguably accelerated their involvement. While the reception to private equity has not always been positive, but as more people understand the intention of such companies, the fears have subsided. In fact, some of the deals being talked of at present have much longer timeframes than those usually associated with the sector. The growth in American ownership such as the Fenway Sports Group at Liverpool, the Glazers at Manchester United and Stan Kroenke at Arsenal has experienced mixed relationships with fans. Initially, there was resistance, but ultimately, if a club is successful, the mood shifts substantially. It is not inconceivable that private equity will no longer be looked as a two-horned devil in the near future.

54

Spain’s La Liga has just announced their deal with CVC has now been approved by 37 of its 42 clubs. There was an attempt to head the transaction off by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao with a bank-backed consortium, but the € 2 billion package will give CVC an 8.25% stake in La Liga’s media rights for 50 years. Spanish clubs will be able to spend 70% of the proceeds on infrastructure, 15% on servicing debts and 15% in the transfer market. The three clubs are now challenging the deal, so the story could run for a considerable period. Likewise, there was resistance in Italy when a group of private equity firms were in talks with Italian league Serie A. This transaction involved the provision of a credit line of € 1.2 billion for a 10% stake in the league. Three of Italy’s most influential clubs, Juventus, Inter Milan and Lazio, blocked the deal, so CVC turned its attention to Spain. However, there is still a possibility that one of the firms may resurrect the proposal. The Bundesliga also flirted with the idea, but the clubs were mostly very opposed to any private equity investment. KKR, Bridgepoint and CVC were all part of discussions with the aim of a 25% stake in the league’s overseas broadcasting rights. In May 2021, the clubs broke off talks, but interestingly the caveat was, “for now”. While the possibility of a league transaction is not universally welcomed, clubs have been bought – and sold – by private equity companies. Clubs such as AC Milan, Genoa, Bordeaux, Burnley, Nancy and Toulouse all benefitted from some sort of private equity investment. It would appear that while banks largely steer clear of football that alternative finance will continue to grow among major clubs. In addition to requiring security for any lending, banks are also reluctant to get into a situation where they have to force a club to fold. If, as promised, the game becomes better regulated, some of those concerns may diminish, but in the meantime, clubs are tapping markets that are willing to provide muchneeded funds. How this can be aligned with the emotional aspects of football remains to be seen.
