JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for today’s important match against Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with Bemmy including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Bemerton Heath that have made the journey to Foxcotte Park this afternoon and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on this evening. Our last home game saw us take on Verwood Town and once we got the opening goal from Harry Lawton inside 35 seconds, we never looked back. I was really pleased with the performance of the whole side and also for Shane Lock, who never stopped working and was rewarded with his fine 4 goal haul in the second half. It was a game in which we showed all the attributes necessary to win; great pass and move football and a resilience when needed. Your support also helped, with your noise, when we kept pushing towards the end, so thank you for that. The entire side put in a good shift and helped us continue our fine form at home.

“IT WAS A GAME IN WHICH WE SHOWED ALL THE ATTRIBUTES NECESSARY TO WIN: GREAT PASS AND MOVE FOOTBALL AND A RESILIENCE

WHEN NEEDED”

Tremendous It was also great to see the new signings we have been able to bring in settle in so well. With the newest addition Mike Gosney not only putting in an impressive performance but also getting on the scoresheet again to make it two in two. The whole teams display epitomised the strong and committed performance by each and every player and that was the basis for a deserved result in some difficult conditions. It is vital we focus on today’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us, as we look to continue to move up the table. I know that the Bemmy players will be really up for this game, they will be looking for revenge after we beat them at their place. They showed why they are top of the league that afternoon with a determined performance, even with 10 men, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park and to keep pushing for promotion. Enjoy the game!

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Bemerton Heath Harlequins, here today for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into a strong position for promotion with our hardfought victories over Totton & Eling and Verwood Town over the last few weeks – which I hope we can continue today.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Today’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Bemerton Heath will be looking to maintain their position at the top

6

of the league, a position they seem to have had for the majority of the season. They came through a tough encounter against fellow promotion challengers, Newport (IOW). We will of course need to be at our very best today if we can maintain our winning form. With continued activity on and off the pitch at the moment putting the club in the local spotlight we have been inundated with companies interested in becoming sponsors, guests and partners of this fine football club. The current success of not only the first team but the Swifts and ladies’ sides is not only down to the players on the pitch but the financial support off it. If you’re interested in any sponsorship or would like to discuss any corporate partnerships with the Football Club please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Speaking of success, I’d like to congratulate our ladies’ side for progressing to the semi-finals of the Women’s Hampshire Trophy last Sunday with a 4-1 penalty shoot-out success over US Portsmouth, after the tie finished 1-1 after the 90 minutes. Well done ladies!

We have come through a run of tough games, but we still have further difficult games ahead. Starting with today’s game and with the likes of Romsey, Newport (IOW) and Downton all to come in March. It makes for an exciting end to the season. We have finally moved up from 5th position into the top 3 and have a real opportunity to go up this season with a strong squad, that in my opinion, could finish in the top half of the Wessex Premier.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins in another important game as we continue our pursuit of promotion.

“WE’VE GOT OURSELVES INTO A GOOD POSITION – NOW IT’S UP TO US TO PUSH ON.”

After a great start last Saturday we went 5-0 up inside the opening 21 minutes against Verwood Town and to be fair we possibly could and should have had more. What was pleasing was to come away with a win and to keep up the pressure at the top, only 5 points behind Bemerton with 2 games in hand that we know we need to obtain maximum points from. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week.

Given the run we’ve been on it will be easy to get carried away. After 1 defeat in the last 18 league games that is no surprise. However, we have a strong and hungry management team, coaching staff and dressing room that will ensure we will not get complacent. As I’ve said, it’s a long old season and a lot can change.

All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on. This afternoon we take on Bemerton Heath Harlequins, who will be looking to continue their run of good results, including last Saturday’s home win over Newport (IOW), so we know that we will be in for a tough game this afternoon. We’ve already seen some memorable games across the league, let’s hope that today is another one of those occasions. Get behind us once again this afternoon. Enjoy the game.

We have made some important signings recently to improve what is already a strong squad with Jordi Wilson, Chris Flood, Joe Wright and Mike Gosney signing recently. And we have also signed a familiar face in Liam Hibberd a couple of weeks ago, with Hibbo moving into the back four from midfield on Saturday, www.ansfc.co.uk

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD IN A FEW WEEKS TIME WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO FACE ROMSEY TOWN AT THE AEC PROTECTION STADIUM

ROMSEY TOWN WHO? Romsey Town, aka the Town, from the AEC Protection Ground, are the Street’s opponents on the 12th of March. Totton lost 51 on Tuesday night against Winchester City in the Southampton Senior Cup, while the Town currently sit 8th place in the league with 50 points and are three points behind 7th place Downton. HOW THEY DOING? The Town got off to a poor start to the season, with three defeats against Newport (IOW), Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Folland Sports before a winning run of 4 matches for the Town, which started with a 3-2 home win over Fawley. Further wins over Totton & Eling, Laverstock & Ford and Ringwood Town followed before a 3-1 defeat at Verwood ended September. October saw Town start with a 1-0 win over Whitchurch, before a 51 defeat over Andover Town. They bounced back with a 5-1 win over Ash United and then a 3-1 win over East Cowes. The month ended with Whitchurch gaining revenge for their defeat earlier in the month with a 2-0 victory. November started with 2 wins over Petersfield and New Milton Town. A run of 2 defeats came mid-month against the Street (4-2) and Downton (3-1). The Town ended November with a 3-0 home victory over Fleet Spurs. December only saw 3 matches played but the Town remained unbeaten with wins over Millbrook (6-1) and Ringwood Town (10) and an impressive 1-1 home draw with leaders Bemerton Heath. 2022 started off well

10

for the Town with three wins over Fleet Spurs, Verwood Town and Ash United. A 2-2 home draw with Newport (IOW) ended the month of January. This month has seen a 2-0 defeat to Folland Sports before a 3-1 win at East Cowes, Oliver Jenkins getting a brace and also Owen Holloway also on target. The Town’s last league match ended in a 3-1 home defeat to Downton.

HOW TO GET THERE? The AEC Protection

Stadium is 39 minutes or 21 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A3057 towards Stockbridge. Continue along the A3057 through Stockbridge and Kings Somborne and all the way to Romsey. At the turn left onto The Hundred/B3398. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Bypass Rd/A27/A3090. The ground is on the left.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

our last match at the AEC Protection Stadium came in August 2017 in the Wessex League One and saw the Street lose 4-2 thanks to goals from Tom Ashton, Luis Morais and a brace from Daniel Fox. This came after Zach Hine gave the Street the lead after 34 minutes and Zach Neve got a consolation in the 70th minute. Since that defeat the Street won the return game in December 2017 with a 3-2 score line. The two sides then met in the FA Cup the following season, the Street triumphing 4-0. The two sides then met in the league in November 2019 with Street winning 5-1 but the season ended early before the return game could be played. Romsey then recorded a 2-0 win here in November 2020.

welcome

BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Bemerton Heath Harlequins Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Quinns make the journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time since their 3-2 victory here in February 2020. The Quinns winning thanks to goals from Justin Bennett (2) and Kane O’Keefe. The Street’s goals coming from Gerson Ramos and a late penalty from Reece Rusher. Jazz Beavis had earlier missed an earlier penalty.

A narrow 2-1 League Cup defeat to Premier Hamworthy United started off October and were followed up with wins over Whitchurch and Totton & Eling. A penalty shootout victory over Ashton & Backwell United saw further progress in the FA Vase, before back-to-back league defeats to Ringwood in a 9-goal thriller and a 10 loss at New Milton. A 0-0 draw at Laverstock & Ford started off November before wins over Fleet Spurs, Ash United, Verwood Town and Newport (IOW). The FA Vase journey ended with a 4-1 defeat to Clevedon Town.

This afternoon’s match promises to be a an entertaining game with Bemerton the current league leaders on 68 points from their 29 games played but have a number of sides just behind them in the race for promotion to the Wessex Premier.

The Quinns started 2022 with a 3-0 win over Laverstock & Ford before the Street inflicted Bemerton’s first home defeat with a 2-1 win. Millbrook were crushed 8-0 before draws at Folland Sports and Downton rounded off January.

The Quinns got off to the perfect start with a 2-1 home win over Ash United, thanks to goals from Justin Bennett and Ronan Clancy. A further 3-1 home win over Romsey Town came next. A 2-2 home draw to Downton and then high scoring victories over Millbrook and Fawley rounded off August.

Bemerton’s recent form has seen them win 1-0 away at Fawley thanks to Justin Bennett. Petersfield Town were then defeated 3-0 and then Verwood 6-0. Last Saturday saw fourth place Newport (IOW) visit Moon Park and in a tight contest a lone Kane O’Keefe goal ensured the three points for the Quinns.

September saw a 100%-win ratio with wins over Petersfield, East Cowes, Folland Sports and Sherborne Town in the FA Vase.

Manager Shaun Hale will be hoping his side can continue their current form with just seven matches remaining.

in opposition OUR AT-A-GLANCE GUIDE TO THE MEN FROM MOON PARK ► MANAGER SHAUN HALE. The former Havant & Waterlooville, Salisbury City and Fleet Town player, took over in December 2020. ► ASSISTANT MANAGER DANNY PROCTOR. Danny, a serving officer in the British Army, had a long and distinguished military footballing career, playing for the British Army and the Combined Service football teams. This is Danny's first venture into coaching a civilian club, but he is already hugely respected. Being fit as a fiddle, Danny is an invaluable member of the coaching team. ► GOALKEEPER COACH JIMMY RICHARDSON. - Jimmy is another serving Warrant Officer within the British Army. He also assists the gaffer with their other representative team, the Royal Artillery FC. Jimmy is a real players favourite and keeps the 1 Harlequins goalkeepers in top condition. The Rayman is an excellent defender who can also get forward and deliver crosses of good quality. Another 20-year-old who has a huge future in front of him. SAM O’HAGAN. - Sam is a loyal club man and whilst he is still a relatively young man, he is already classed as a club stalwart. Sam is a wholehearted defender who has never let his club down, whilst also representing every age group within the senior section. CALLUM COCKS. Callum is a member of the Army Reserve Forces and represents the Royal Artillery and Army Reserve football teams. Cocksy can play at either centre half or centre forward with good effect at both ends of the pitch. Cocksy is a Nottingham lad, so he appearances will be few and far between, but we are happy to be able to call upon the big man whenever he is available. JACK ROBERTS. Jack has had a short sabbatical away from football as he has been busy in his work life. Jack is a steady defender with two good feet. He has a great attitude and has fitted into his new surrounding effortlessly. GEORGE BENNETT. George is a very elegant and comfortable footballer, who can play in a number of positions. Tenacious in the tackle but has an eye for a pass, George was an excellent acquisition in 2019. KANE O’KEEFE. – Kane has already had a great non-league career, playing for a couple of local teams. In particular Kano was the skipper for Salisbury FC as their phoenix side rose from the Wessex league back into the Southern Premier division. Prior to that Kane has made almost 300 appearances for the Harlequins scoring over a hundred goals.

bluffers guide Bemerton Heath Harlequins FC... THE CLUB The Bemerton Club started as a boys' team in 1945 and after beating every other boy’s team in the area, they changed their name to Bemerton Athletic in 1949. The club dominated the Salisbury & District Football League from the start through to the mid-1960s. In 1960–61 they were league champions with a 100% record, also winning the Wiltshire Junior Cup, Morrison Cup, South Wilts Charity 'A' and Lord Bledisloe Cup in the same season. After winning the First Division six seasons in a row, the club moved up to the Wiltshire Football League. They won promotion to Division One in the 1965–66 season. The club won the Wiltshire Combination League in 1972–73 and 1973–74 and the Wiltshire Senior League in 1986–87 after being runners-up for the previous three seasons. Bemerton Heath Harlequins was established in May 1989 as a merger of Wiltshire League club Bemerton Athletic, former Salisbury & Andover League club Moon and Bemerton Boys of the Mid-Wilts League. The new club was accepted into the Wessex league for the 1989– 90 season. In 1992–93 they entered the FA Cup for the first time, reaching the third qualifying round. The season also saw the club win the Wiltshire Senior Cup, beating Wollen Sports 3–1 in the final, as well as a third-place finish in the Wessex League. After winning the Wessex League Cup in 2009–10, Bemerton were Wessex League runners-up in 2010–11, also winning the Senior Cup for the third time after a 2–0 win against Bradford Town. The following season saw them finish as league runners-up again, as well as winning the Hampshire FA's Russell Cotes Cup, beating Christchurch 2–0 in the final.

BEMERTON – THE AREA In 1086, the Domesday survey recorded four households at Bermentone or Bimertone. Until 1894, Bemerton was a chapelry of Fugglestone St Peter, but it was then established as a parish in its own right. In 1927 a large part of Bemerton was transferred to the borough of Salisbury, and in 1934 Bemerton civil parish was dissolved: most of its population was transferred to the newly created parish of Quidhampton, and the remainder to Wilton borough. TOTTON & ELING 0-5 STREET COOK 17, LOCK 24

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street moved in to third place in the table, with a comfortable, almost routine win over Totton and Eling at Millers Park, completing the double over the home side and taking their total of goals scored in the last four League matches to twenty-two. Street showed their intentions straight from the first whistle with a close-range Chris Flood effort from a Harry Lawton cross saved by keeper Ciaran Hinds and new signing Mike Gosney having a shot cleared off the line. A neat home move was halted by goalkeeper Jordi Wilson saving at Traore’s feet before Gosney just failed to make sufficient contact with a Flood cross at the other end. The pressure was eventually rewarded in the twelfth minute when a Gosney corner from the right was bundled over the line by Harry Lawton despite the close attentions of a home defender. New Street were dominating possession, while having to be wary of Traore’s pace on the break, and after Flood had been crowded out by weight of numbers, they doubled their lead just before the half hour.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Gosney switched to the right flank and pulled the ball back from the by line for Shane Lock to react the quickest and turn the ball past Hinds. The home side escaped when a Flood header from a Joe Wright cross smacked against the underside of the bar, bounced down on the line and into the hands of the grateful goalkeeper, but the visitors were not to be denied and added a third on the stroke of half time. Gosney found space on the left and his low hard driven cross came off a defender’s foot on to his arm, and whilst there was no intention to handle the ball, under the present illogical rules it was a penalty and Chris Flood made no mistake from the spot. If three nil at the break suggested game over it was surely confirmed within sixty seconds of the re-start when Street added goal number four, Lock cleverly turning the ball in to Mike Gosney’s path and the finish past the advancing goalkeeper was cool and clinical. The home side responded with a break down the right and a chance, with a cross that was rather scuffed into Wilson’s arms by Dominey from close range. Lock had a shot well saved and the hard-working Mikey Davis was too high after being found by Lawson before Flood suffered a similar fate. Midway through the half it was five as a move involving four or five players ended with Shane Lock collecting his second and the side’s fifth goal, turning Davis’s cross past the overworked Hinds. The scorer then gave way to Ross Cook who immediately was foiled by the goalkeeper’s legs and Wilson had confidently dealt with a dangerous cross. Late on Cook had a free www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet kick that was pushed round the post by Hi d

EVANS 39

WHAT’S THE STORY? Andover New Street entertained in a five-star performance as they scored seven for the third time in five matches. The game then got away to an explosive start with the home side taking the lead after just thirty-four seconds. Mike Gosney charged down a clearance, his cross was only cleared to the edge of the area and Harry Lawton’s low drive found the corner of the net. Verwood had a much changed and youthful side from their previous visit and were simply swept aside in the opening twenty minutes. Mikey Davis was denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Adam Lewingray before the second goal came on ten minutes. Joe Wright went from left back to take a corner on the right and Shane Lock, far from the tallest player in the box, rose unchallenged to head the ball almost out of the keeper’s hands and high into the net. Two minutes later it was three as Chris Flood’s persistence took him down the left flank and the low cross was turned home by Shane Lock. Six minutes after he had scored his first goal he completed his hat trick, collecting a through ball and turning the defender before firing past the rather static keeper, The half’s midway point was marked by goal number five as the visiting defence failed to deal with a through ball and Mike Gosney found the corner of the net with the keeper again seeming flat footed. Another home corner was cleared and this time to good effect as Erhan Quarchioni’s speed took him into space on the right and his cross provided Diop Evans with a simple tap in to reduce the arrears. There was still time for New Street to make it six before the break as Flood’s clever reverse pass sent Shane Lock away, the defence stood off and a cool finish took the striker’s tally to four. The Street got a sixth goal when a Gosney corner from the right cleared everybody, only for Wright to cross from the other flank enabling Chris Flood to control the ball and turn in one movement before beating the overworked Lewingray.

4 THE BOSS Andover New Street 6-2 East Cowes Vics 30th September 2017 Danny Dolan looks ahead to today’s game

The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by heavy defeats at Romsey and Christchurch. By the end of September, the Street were just 1 point off top spot and were in 5th place. East Cowes were the next visitors and were second from bottom in 18th position with just 2 points out of 6 games.

East Cowes continued to show some fight and netted their second of the match through their top scorer Jordan Browne. Yates netted his second of the game on 84 minutes and four minutes later substitute Nic Turpin put in number six to complete the scoring. The victory would keep the Street in 5th place and how little did we know that they would go on to achieve promotion to the Wessex Premier for the first time in the club’s history.

The home side took just fifteen minutes to take the lead as Lock netted the opener. East Cowes however then came back into the game and equalised before half time after missing several clear chances.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS The season targets Wessex League Premier title-chasers Horndean are pushing to achieve in final run-in Horndean boss Michael Birmingham revealed his squad are still chasing achieving two in-house season targets in their final nine Wessex League Premier Division fixtures. The Deans currently sit second in the table and remain in title contention, although leaders Hamworthy are a point ahead of them with two games in hand. Birmingham told how his side have long surpassed the first of three season targets by reaching the 35-point mark to ensure Wessex Premier 'safety'. Now sitting on 67 points from 31 league fixtures so far, they have been pushing for two more campaign aims for a sustained period. But Birmingham revealed they are 'not quite there yet' in terms of ensuring his second season aim is reached, while the Deans boss stressed his squad are 'nowhere near' securing his third and final target set out at the start of the season - but remained tight-lipped on the exact details of either of those ambitions. ‘ We made three targets (for the season), the first target was to hit 35 points to stay up - we hit that - second target we’re not quite there yet, the third target we’re nowhere near there yet. When we hit the second and third target I’ll know how we’ve done as a season,; revealed Birmingham. Horndean are preparing to head to second-bottom Hythe & Dibden this weekend with both leading scorer Connor Duffin and 11-goal striker Harry Jackson available again after serving suspensions. Dual-signed Chichester City forward Callum Overton will not be involved this weekend having featured in last weekend's win over Baffins Milton Rovers. But Karol Skoczen is in contention again after netting on his Horndean debut last time out after arriving from Alton. Birmingham added: ‘Terry (Cox) has come back in charge (at Hythe), and he’s got them going again. They had a great result at Moneyfields a few weeks ago, 3-1 beating them in their own backyard, so they can’t be taken lightly. They’re going to be a tough team to break down.’

36

ALSO... Baffins Milton Rover’s boss Shaun Wilkinson admitted his side are a ‘soft touch’ at the moment after their dismal Wessex League Premier Division run was extended. Three weeks after being seven minutes away from taking over top spot, Rovers slumped to a 3-2 home loss to AFC Stoneham last night. That was their fifth defeat in six league games, and they have now taken just five points from a possible 24. They trail leaders Hamworthy by nine points, having played two games more, and are eight behind second-placed Horndean having played the same number of matches.

ROUND-UP Hammers land home tie in last eight of the FA Vase

Newport FC announce start of new stadium work this week

Hamworthy United are poised to welcome another bumper home crowd to the County Ground as they get set to face Southall in the quarterfinals of the FA Vase.

Preliminary work at the site of the new Newport Football Club ground at the Racecourse is to begin this week.

A hat-trick from Bailey Rowe sent Tim Sills’s side through to the last eight of the national competition on Saturday, as they sealed a 31 victory over Tunbridge Wells. And Hammers will be at home once again in the next round, as they were drawn against Combined Counties League Premier North outfit Southall.

Newport FC chairman, Pete Westhorpe, said: “There are one or two issues that need to be agreed with the Isle of Wight Council before the main work on the new stadium can begin, but I know supporters will be encouraged to see this preliminary work get underway.”

Sixth in their respective division, Southall have come through their past two Vase ties on penalties. They beat Clevedon 5-4 from the spot after a 1-1 draw in round four, before holding their nerve to overcome Stansfeld 4-2 on penalties on Saturday, following a goalless stalemate. Their next clash in the competition is set to take place on Saturday, March 12. Should Sills’s side be victorious, they would scoop £4,125 in prize money, as well as then be just one step away from a Wembley final. www.ansfc.co.uk

The main part of the works will be the creation of a visibility splay from the proposed access to the Racecourse, by cutting back the hedgerow. New hedgerow planting will be undertaken to compensate for this, with the works supervised by an ecological consultant, with the approval of the Isle of Wight Council.

The club is currently ground sharing with Ryde Saints at Smallbrook, Ryde, while the new stadium is constructed. Part of that ground-share agreement requires new floodlights at Smallbrook to be provided.

Peter added: “I am pleased to say we are moving forward on this issue too and I expect there to be some tangible developments in the very near future.” If remaining issues with the council are overcome, the hope is that work can commence on the new Racecourse stadium — to include an all-weather pitch, l bh d l ki g i M db l t d i th t

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 MIDFIELDERS.... 10 FRANK LAMPARD

8

Part of England's golden generation, Frank Lampard was an integral part of Chelsea's emergence as a European superclub. One of the greatest box-to-box midfielders the world has ever seen, Lampard's tendency to arrive late in the box helped him grab many crucial and match-winning goals. The only midfielder to have scored more than 150 goals in the Premier League, Frank Lampard won an incredible 13 trophies with Chelsea. The former England international was arguably at the peak of his career from 2004-06 and even came second in the Ballon d'Or standings in 2005 losing out to the legendary Ronaldinho. An accurate penalty and set-piece taker, Frank Lampard will forever be remembered fondly by Chelsea fans for his important contributions and inspirational performances.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, Luka Modric, comes in at number 8 on this list. One of the most complete midfielders to ever play the game, Modric has consistently been among the best players in the world for over a decade. Capable of picking defence splitting passes and equally adept at doing his defensive duties, Modric has continuously evolved and improved his game in the last few years. A crucial part of the Real Madrid team which won 3 UEFA Champions League trophies in a row, the Croatian midfielder was the first player in over a decade to break the dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and win the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year Award in 2018.

7 STEVEN GERRARD ENGLAND

9

JOHAN NEESKENS

NETHERLANDS

An extraordinary player in his own right, Dutch midfielder Johan Neeskens was often overshadowed by his more famous countryman, Johan Cruyff. The steel to Cruyff's grace, Neeskens was an integral part of Ajax and the Netherlands national team which played some beautiful and stunning football in the 1970s. The Dutch midfield maestro was known for his tireless running, relentless pressure on the opposition and immense passing skills. He was also extremely talented and skilled on the ball. Neeskens' presence in the Ajax and Dutch national teams helped the more creative players express themselves and play with freedom. A true team man, Neeskens played an integral role in Ajax's 3 consecutive European Cups. He also had a successful stint at Barcelona before winding down his amazing career in the United States of America.

38

Arguably the greatest player to never win the Premier League, Steven Gerrard is undoubtedly the greatest Liverpool midfielder of all time. The Liverpool legend's leadership skills and inspirational performances are well renowned and his penchant for big match performances enhanced his reputation as one of the best English footballers of this generation. Capable of playing all across the midfield line, Gerrard almost single-handedly dragged Liverpool to their incredible 2005 UEFA Champions League triumph. From 20042010, Gerrard was nearly unplayable and drove an average Liverpool team to great heights with some stunning individual performances.

6

PAUL SCHOLES

ENGLAND

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes takes the #6 spot on this list. One of Sir Alex Ferguson's most trusted players, the 'Ginger Genius' played a huge role in making Manchester United the European Super Club it is today. One of the most gifted midfielders to ever play in the Premier League, Paul Scholes' range of passing was simply stunning. The England midfielder won every trophy possible with Manchester United and was highly regarded by both his teammates as well as opponents.

ANDREA PIRLO

ITALY

Current Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo redefined the role of a deep lying playmaker with his extraordinary vision and passing skills. Winner of the World Cup, UEFA Champions League, multiple Serie A titles and domestic cups, Andrea Pirlo is one of the most decorated midfielders in European football history. Andrea Pirlo's expertise with the dead ball led to many crucial goals and breakthroughs for both his club and country. One of the most elegant and technically gifted players to ever grace the game, Pirlo's class and importance to football can perhaps be best summed up by this simple quote from the legendary Johan Cruyff: “Pirlo can make his feet do whatever he wants. He’s a genius.”

4

DIDI

Brazil has produced a number of brilliant footballers, but Brazil's greatest ever central midfielder is arguably Waldyr Pereira, fondly known as Didi. The player of the tournament at the 1958 World Cup, Didi was the brains behind Pele and Garrincha's stunning feats with the Brazilian national team. Didi often had his best performances on the biggest stage. The Brazilian midfielder had some amazing games in the 1958 and 1962 World Cups, winning both of them. Ranked the 7th greatest Brazilian player of the 20th century by IFFHS, Didi was quite clearly the best midfielder of his generation and one of the greatest Brazilian players of all time.

Xavi's long-time midfield partner at both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, Andres Iniesta, is one of the most talented midfielders to ever play the game. Blessed with incredible vision, passing skills and an uncanny knack for performing when it matters the most, Iniesta will go down in Spanish history for his incredible performance and match-winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final. Technically gifted and extremely skilled on the ball, Andres Iniesta's style of play was pleasing to watch and extremely effective on the field as well. CHANGING KEEPER FOR SHOOTOUT!

By Matthew Badcock

If you caught any of the League Cup final from Wembley last Sunday, you will already know the story well. Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy had a fantastic game against Liverpool but with a few minutes of extra-time to go, the TV cameras had already picked up on Thomas Tuchel’s masterplan for the penalty shoot-out. Readying himself on the bench was stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who then came on before time ran out with the theory his penalty saving record would tip the balance in the Blues' favour. Of course, we are familiar with strikers coming off the bench in the final minutes of games to specifically take a spot-kick. As England found out in the European Championship final, it doesn't always work. And, as events would have it, the move also backfired for Chelsea. Kepa couldn't keep out any of Liverpool’s 11 penalties and then blazed his over the bar to hand Jurgen Klopp’s team victory. It seemed, with the hindsight factor we all love to ignore, a crazy decision. Who knows… Mendy staying on may have yielded the same result. But the decision was a big post-match talking point. We've seen managers try it a few times over the years. There was even a moment in this season’s FA Vase when it worked to perfection for Wallingford. Lawrie Aitchison is usually a defender by trade but had to pull on the gloves in the second round qualifying when regular stopper Sam Baldock was ruled out in the warm-up as a precautionary measure while still feeling the effects of a suspected concussion in a previous game.

After a 4-4 thriller with Bishops Cleeve, Aitchison saved two penalty shoot-out kicks and his side advanced. It set the cogs whirring in boss Lee Matthews brain. So, when the 21-year-old centre-back woke up on the morning of their first-round game against Ascot United, he had a message from the gaffer telling him to bring his gloves. And not to tell anyone! Now this story wouldn’t be told if the game had ended with one side winning after the 90 minutes. Again, Wallingford staged a comeback to draw 2-2 and send the game to penalty kicks. Aitchison swapped his outfield jersey for a spare keeper’s one and got ready to stare down his opponents. And he went even better for the Step 6 outfit, saving three times to help his side continue their Vase run. So, thinking differently and trying to be clever can work. Not that it will help Chelsea fans feel any better!

league look Important games at the top of both Divisions and thankfully, after last week, no problems with the weather, but the Programme and football in the area in general was shrouded by the postponement of Laverstock & Ford’s fixture after the passing of their player Freddie Jones-Fontete in tragic circumstances during the week. The thoughts and sympathy of all go to his family and friends and all at Laverstock & Ford. In the Premier Division Hamworthy United stretched their lead at the top to six points following a 2-0 win at Cowes Sports with Jack Lovell and Max Wilcock on target and they were helped by two of their closest rivals, Horndean and Brockenhurst, battling out a goalless draw at Five Heads Park. Bashley maintained their challenge with a 3-0 win at Portland courtesy of two goals from Jamie Webber and a Lewis Ross penalty but Baffins Milton Rovers slipped out of the top six after a 4-0 defeat at AFC Portchester – Marley Ridge (2), Steve Ramsey and Rafa Ramos with the goals in front of an attendance not far short of 300. Shaftesbury are now in fifth place after a 5-1 win at home to US Portsmouth and, as is their custom, the goals were shared around with Greg Peel, Asa Phillips, Joe Wickham, Luke Delaney and Luke Burbidge on the score sheet while Cameron Quirke notched the visitors’ goal. AFC Stoneham now complete the top six after coming from behind to defeat Alton 2-1. George Bowerman gave the visitors the lead before two late goals from Callum Laycock and Jim Orvis ensured the points went to the home side. Moneyfields and Fareham shared six goals, not surprising given both sides propensity for scoring, with Joe Briggs (2) and Corey Heath on target for the Moneys and Archie Wilcox, Curt Robbins and Josh Benfield replying for the Creeksiders. In a game that may not have been included in the Preview – and apologies if that is the case – Bournemouth and Alresford finished all square at one apiece at Victoria Park with Nil Canadel and Sutcha Shepherd the marksmen.

Finally, still no joy for Amesbury as Hamble Club ran out four one winners at Bonnymead Park. Josh Carey claimed the lone Amesbury goal but sorry to say that no details have been supplied as regards the Hamble scorers. That means that Amesbury and Hythe & Dibden, who did not play today, remain marooned at the bottom of the table. The battle at the top of Division One is very much of similar interest and in the top match of the day a single goal from Kane O’Keefe gave Bemerton Heath victory over Newport, and the Islanders cause was also not helped by the three other main contenders all winning and winning handsomely. Follands scored eight against Ash United, who have conceded heavily of late, with doubles from Jamie White and Nathan Gray added to goals from Nick Watts, Jake Newton, Fabio Manuel and Ethan Anders. Luke Cains was the Ash scorer. It was a good day for both Andover clubs with New Street winning 7-1, the third time they have scored seven in the last five games, and Town 5-0. Street defeated a youthful Verwood side in the “replay” of a game that was abandoned in December because of floodlight problems, with six of the goals coming in the first half and four in the opening 15 minutes. Shane Lock led the way with four, all in the opening blitz, backed up by Harry Lawton (after thirty-five seconds), Mike Gosney and Chris Flood with Diop Evans notching the Verwood consolation. A mile or so down the road Ryan Griffith with two, Jamie Ritchie, Adam Pattison and an own goal saw Town go nap against Millbrook, who have lost their way of late after a promising start to the season. Downton and Romsey Town, both on the fringe of the promotion race, both recorded away wins. Ollie Davis, Danny Clarke and Sam Howe gave the Wiltshire side a 3-0 victory at Fawley while Jack Odam and Craig Bryant helped Romsey secure the double over Petersfield whose single goal in reply was scored by Jamie Randall. New Milton completed a slightly truncated Division One programme with a 4-2 win over East Cowes Vics, Luke Stone added to a Chris Long hat trick for the Linnets with Conor Lyon and Jordan Chapman the Vics marksmen. Bemerton still lead the table with Follands and Andover New Street now leading the chasing pack.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN

If anyone needed a reminder about the strength of the Premier League versus the rest of Europe, the displays of Liverpool and Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League provided clear statements of intent to the other contenders.

The Premier has provided two all-English finals in the last three years in the Champions League and one in the Europa League. At least three of the four clubs in the last 16 should get through to the quarter-finals, Manchester United possibly having the hardest task in Spain. With their financial advantages, big squads and top coaches, this could be a golden time for English clubs in Europe. It is very clear Manchester City and Liverpool are the strongest teams in the Premier and as the league campaign progresses, the gap seems to be increasing once more. City are currently 20 points clear of fourth place Manchester United, with another dozen games to go. In 2020-21, the difference between first and fourth was 19 points, while in 2019-20, Liverpool had 99 points to Chelsea’s 66 – a massive 33-point margin. The way City are accumulating points at the moment, it is not out of the question they will hit the 100 mark and be closer to 40 points in front of fourth position. Both teams are not only highly skilled, strategic and canny, they are also extremely resilient. If they fall behind, they invariably recover and win or draw. Liverpool were losing at home to Norwich in their latest league game and ran out 3-1 winners, City had a rare off day and were beaten 3-2 at the Etihad by Tottenham, despite coming from behind twice. It’s no coincidence Liverpool and City have the greatest level of stability when it comes to managing their teams. Jürgen Klopp (win rate 60.7%) and Pep Guardiola (73.4%) have been in charge since 2015 and 2016 respectively and have managed their teams for well over 300 games. Admittedly, they are privileged individuals as they are coaching clubs with resources, but it says a lot about continuity and the process of building a structure with a very distinct culture. There are other ways that are also effective, such as Chelsea’s creative tension that delivers trophy after trophy.

54

Klopp and Guardiola are part of a society of top managers that have been drawn to the Premier League, a group that also currently comprises Antonio Conte, Thomas Tuchel and Marcelo Bielsa and once included José Mourinho, Rafa Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti. Just as the presence of top players underlines the power of the league, the ability to lure the best coaches also emphasises the Premier’s professional appeal – the top managers want to be involved. However, Klopp and Guardiola will not be around forever, and Liverpool and Manchester City will do well to learn from the succession mistakes made by Arsenal and Manchester United. The Premier’s other representatives are some way behind Liverpool and City, even though Chelsea continue to win trophies and Manchester United should be in much better shape than they appear to be. The Champions League holders do not have a style embedded into their club culture because the manager changes so often. One might argue this means the system doesn’t allow anything to get stale, but essentially, Chelsea have developed into a cup side, albeit on a grand scale. Stability is needed for marathons, rather than the sprints Chelsea have perfected. They could win the Champions League again, but back-to-back success is hard to achieve. Manchester United are very unlikely champions, because they seem to be a club at odds with itself at the moment. They’ve spent vast sums, but have little to show for their market activity. Furthermore, the post-Ferguson hangover goes on and nobody is quite sure what Ralf Rangnick’s role really is. They will do well to make the last eight. The first leg games involving Liverpool and City demonstrated just how formidable these teams have become, although there are surely stronger opponents ahead for both. It was the way they confidentally managed the games while having something in reserve. The Premier league has provided eight of the last 24 quarter-finalists, it’s a fair assumption those statistics will undoubtedly look more impressive by the end of the season.
