THE MANAGER
Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for today’s Sydenhams Wessex League One fixture against Downton. I’ll start by welcoming Ben Smith, his staff and players and supporters who have made the short journey today to Andover. The Robins have made a similar start to the season like ourselves and we both find we are not where we hoped to be after last season was stopped so suddenly. Downton have started to find their form with a comfortable 3-0 away victory over Totton & Eling last Saturday. It seems ages ago since our last home game, which was another disappointing result for us against Romsey Town back in early November just before the second lockdown. We have tried to take advantage of the lockdown break by bringing in some fresh blood and have also said goodbye to a couple of players.
I’m m pleased to see the lad’s lad back at training and it’ss clear to see that they have been working hard on their fitness levels during the lockdown. Jamie,, Jason Ja and Thomo certainly put the lads through some hard training sessions on their return and the boys certainly put a shift in against Sholing last Saturday in our friendly game after our league game at New Milton was postponed. I thought ght the lads played really well at Sholing and showed what a great side we can be, it was good to give some of the new players some minutes under their belt and also gave us a chance hance to see which players can compete againstt higher league opposition. We will continue to focus on the next game and take it one game at a time. I’m confident we will start to pick up points and put this blip behind us. Enjoy today’s ’s game and please get behind your team as you always do. That support is vital in helping us close that gap to the teams above us. May I also wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Please enjoy e yourselves but stay safe and we will hopefully see you on the 28th for our local derby against Andover Town. Up the Street!
Please welcome Liam Hibberd, Luke Dempsey, Joe Wright, Lloyd Thompson and Craig Harding. All of these players are proven winners not just at this level but also in the divisions above and will give us the experience that we have been lacking at times.

MATT SCOTT
GREAT SCOTT THE CAPTAIN’S LOG Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Foxcotte Park for another tough game, this time against Downton this afternoon. It’s been awhile since we have played at home with the reinforced lockdown in November and we have faced tough opposition in our return to action with three away matches. Laverstock was always going to be a tough game for us as they are currently flying in the league and are a good bet for promotion this season if they can continue that form. Having missed that game I was pleased to get 90 minutes under my belt on Saturday when we travelled to Sholing for a friendly. Although we lost 3-0 and conceded an early deflected goal in the first half, I felt we played really well overall and deserved at least one goal.
The performance was really pleasing especially with the new players that have come in recently and I know the lads want to start making up for lost time and get back to dominating and winning matches, starting this afternoon. Downton won’tt make it easy for us and they come here off the back of an important win against Totton & Eling, so we know we are in for a hard game today, just like the previous fixture at their place in October. This time last season we were starting off on an impressive winning run and that’s that what we need to do now if we want to be in with a chance of gaining promotion. The Th points difference isn’’t too great at the moment but we have to start turning draws into victories and I’m m confident that we will do that. As this is the last game before Christmas, I’d d like to wish you all a happy Christmas, in what are unusual times for us all. Try to enjoy the Christmas break but stay safe and hopefully we will have three points at 5pm this evening. I hope you enjoy the game.

THE BOARDROOM
JOHN WARD Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to today’s game against near neighbours Downton. These are my first notes for a while and although the results and performances haven’t reached the expected levels as yet I’m confident that Danny and Jamie can get us moving in the right direction. It’s important that we start to pick up points so the gap between ourselves and the top four doesn’t become impossible to overturn. Laverstoke & Ford have made an impressive start to the season as have Folland Sports but there is already a massive gap between those two teams. Our first game back from lockdown couldn’t have been more difficult against the unbeaten league leaders at their place on a cold Tuesday evening. The difference between the two teams on the night was that they scored their chances and we created very little in front of goal. I’m sure that this will change with the latest new additions to the squad.
There have been a few changes in personnel in the past few weeks. We have seen Brett Denham move back to Tadley Calleva, while Cameron Rohart-Brown and Alfie Moulding have also left the club. We wish them all well for the future. In a similar vein we welcome Liam Hibbard, Luke Dempsey, Joe wright, Lloyd Thompson and Craig Harding to the club, we hope they all have an enjoyable and successful time with us. I must also welcome back goalkeeper Chris Wing, who has returned to us from Amesbury, after leaving Foxcotte, to get some minutes under his belt. I know the lads were happy to see the return of Wingy and he has been christened hristened with a new nickname of “Boomerang Boomerang”, I’m not sure if that will stick! Lastly, can I thank everyone at the club for their continued hard work during difficult times, hopefully next year we will wi all be in a much better position. position After today we have another home game on Monday 28th of December against Andover Town with a 3pm kick-off, off, which should be a great game so make sure you are here to witness it. it Please enjoy today,, be safe and have a wonderful Christmas.

WELCOME TO MORE NEW BOYS! LIAM HIBBERD
LUKE DEMPSEY
The Street bolstered their squad during the recent lockdown with the signings of Liam Hibberd, Luke Dempsey, Craig Harding, Lloyd Thompson and Joe Wright. The additions give a wealth of Wessex Premier experience with Hibberd, Dempsey and Wright providing competition to the Street back line. With the addition of Lloyd Thompson, who impressed whilst playing for Whitchurch United recently, will provide much needed energy on the wings. And finally there is the goal scoring ability of Craig Harding, who was Alresford Town’s top scorer last season with 19 league goals from 29 appearances.
CRAIG HARDING
This follows the news that striker Brett Denham has left the club and has returned to Tadley Calleva, also leaving the club is defender Alfie Moulding. We wish both players well for the future.
LEAGUE ROUND-UP Iain Calder has been appointed the new Manager at Totton & Eling he was previously Assistant Manager at Sholing, under Dave Diaper. The Millers have also appointed a new First Team Coach, with Steve Blackburn taking the role.
with a host of clubs – Newport IOW, Havant & Waterlooville, Fleet Town, Welling, Salisbury City and Bashley, more recently he has been coaching youth football at AFC Portchester.
Jamie Cotton has had to stand down as Manager at Bemerton Heath Harlequins with health issues that have affected his ability to give the position the time and attention he feels he needs to give. We wish him a swift recovery. Shaun Hale has stepped into the vacant manager’s position after a playing career that took in spells WORD ON THE STREET | ANDOVER NEW STREET V DOWNTON | 19.12.20

Smith took over the managerial position in May 2017 and guided the club into 12th position in the 2017-18 season. This was followed with a 7th place finish the following season. Last season saw the Robins challenge for one of the four promotion spots available, with them in 5th position and one point behind Bemerton and Hythe before the season was stopped. An optimistic start to the 2018-19 season with the Street making their debut in the Wessex Premier Division, while league wins were hard to come by, progress was made in the FA Cup with a emphatic 4-0 win at home to Romsey, followed by a narrow defeat in the following round at Moneyfields. The Street came back to earth with something of a bang the following Wednesday as they exited the League Cup at the hands of First Division Downton by three goals to one. And on the night the Wiltshire side fully deserved the result which came courtesy of a three minute spell just before half time when they scored their three goals to which
ultimately the home side had little response. After chances at both ends, came the three minutes that decided the game together with an element of controversy. A long through ball saw McGregor break clear from a position that must have been the best part of five yards off side but there was no flag – the assistant was sadly some fifteen yards out of positionand the striker coolly slotted the ball past the advancing Baxter. New Street might have had a grievance over that but there could be no complaints over the events of the next two minutes. McGregor, wide on the right, chipped a diagonal ball in to the area and Shaun Prentice, on the penalty spot, had time to control the ball turn, and fire past Baxter. Downton then won the ball back immediately from the re-start and a cross from Prentice was only half cleared allowing Jamie Clark to make it three. There was time for Street’s Luke Neller to hit the crossbar with a thirty yard free kick before it was first half (and game) over. The Street did pull a goal back in the second half through substitute Jazz Beavis with a header but it was too little too late for the Street with the Robins advancing to the next round for a home tie against Hamworthy United.

ALEX DOCKREE
CENTRE
SPOT Midfielder Alex Dockree is now into his second season at the Street. The 29-year year-old former Whitchurch, Andover Town and Alresford Town player is the latest from the Street to be put on The Centre Spot... >>> Since you came to the Street, what has been your hardest match and why? When we played Bemerton last season, we got battered by them, which was tough to take. We went down to 10 men early on when Mark Keogh got sent off and they had the quality to make us pay. Best player at New Street at present and why?
I use se to always like Newport IOWs old ground – you’ve got to love an island day out! What made you come to New Street? I signed last year after a bit b of time away from football. I already had friends at the club and have always enjoyed playing for a local team. Who would you say you have the most chemistry on the pitch?
Shane Lock - Locky hits high levels consistently. He’s got a great engine, pace, can score a goal and makes life tough for defenders when he plays up front. To quote Locky himself “if I wanted to play left back I’d probably be in the premier league!” Favourite thing to eat before a game? Classic beans on toast. 34
Favourite away ground played at?
I’d say Danny Urry, we always seem to link up well. When I get the ball I’ll always aim to get it into his feet as he can cause the opposition so many problems and he rarely gives the ball away. Do you have any pre--match superstitions? No not really What is your favourite TV programme? I’m a big fan of Suits

If you could live in one movie, show, game or book what would you live in and why?
no.10 I’ve seen in terms of playing between the lines and he had really quick feet. Reminds me a lot of Bruno Fernandes for Utd.
Inception is a great movie - living in worlds created from dreams would be class! Who do you think is the best football player of all time? Zidane – he had unreal vision and quality and he turned it on when it really mattered. Do you think a central midfielder can learn or be taught to be comfortable on the ball under pressure or do you think you are born with the ability? Some players do have a natural ability to be aware of what’s happening around them but you can definitely be taught. Making it a habit to always be checking your shoulders mean you know where opponents are and therefore can make decisions before receiving the ball. Describe your pre match preparation? Nothing exciting - alway try and eat fairly well the night before and the morning of a game and then usually turn up 10 minutes late

Loudest? Funniest: Gunner. Serious: Kingey. Most untidy: I’d say I’m up there Loudest: Locky What famous player did you pretend to be when at school and what club did you grow up supporting? Steven Gerrard! Absolutely idolised him growing up! I’ve always been a Saints fan.
Who is the best player you have played with? Simon Dunn at Basingstoke. The best engine I’ve seen on a football pitch. He would win the ball back so quickly but also have so much quality on the ball. He could receive the ball in tight areas, turn on a sixpence, score a goal, set up a goal and just made life so easy as his midfield partner. Who is the best player you have played against? I remember we played Farnborough in the FA Cup for Andover Town and Jamie Cureton played up front for them. Even though he was around 40 I think I’ve never seen somebody so sharp around the box.

Who was your biggest influence growing up? My Dad - always found the time to take me and my brother to our many football commitments.
POINTING THE WAY...
Any Pressure as captain? I’m vice skip to Scotty and always enjoy taking the armband if he isn’t available. I wouldn’t say there’s any pressure - I always like to lead and communicate even when I’m not captain. I’m a huge believer that captains should lead from the front so I always enjoy the challenge to ensure I’m doing that.
Who in the charging room has the worst habit? Probably Matt Scott and his leadership of the fines. Literally nothing gets past him! All for a good cause though! Who is the best manager you have ever had? I couldn’t choose. Jason Bristow at Basingstoke just made you feel so relaxed and ensured you enjoyed football. Christian Edwards at Cardiff Met was an ex premier league pro and his understanding of the game and high standards really improved me as a player. Glenn Burnett at Andover Town really believed in me as a player. Always filled me with confidence and made you feel like you could always go out and win. Favourite pair of boots you’ve worn? And when did you wear them? White and black champions league predators! Wore them at under 18s for Andover!

THE CAMERA NEVER LIES Name: Martin Tobin Age: 59 Where do you watch games from: Mainly from behind the goal, but sometimes from the main stand. First game: The first game I watched would have been up at London Road, it was a long time ago. They didn’t have their own ground or clubhouse like we have now. They would play on pitch number 2 and Mick O’Connor was manager at the time.
The worst match: The worst match for me was the game against Cowes I mentioned earlier. It was freezing cold day and it was touch and go with the pitch conditions. The atmosphere was very poor, nobody wanted to play, even the referee wasn’t very keen but the game went ahead and there wasn’t much football and a lot of arguments going on during and after the game. game
First memory: Playing for the Street and going to East Cowes on a cold early January game in the Hampshire League, which we won 1-0 but nobody wanted to play as it was so cold!
Best Individual performance by a player: pl Best performance I’ve seen was by Dave Bird. He was a towering centre half at New Street. He was captain of the team and he was the master and just superb and drive the team really well. He would always give 110 %. He was Mr New Street at the time but it would be close between him and Dave Selby, who was as hard as nails in the midfield.
Best goal seen: The best goal for me was Ily Warshow’s winner in the North Hants Cup final a couple of years ago against Alresford Town at the Camrose Basingtoke. There was good build up to that goal and young Ily took the goal well.
Favourite Street kit: The home green and black stripes. I love all the green and black kits. Although its important from a financial point of view to have a sponsor, sponso for as long as the kit is green and black then thats the most important thing to me. .
Best match witnessed: It would have to be Favourite All-Time Time Player: That a tough one my last game for New Street A. Nick to answer but I’d have to go for Dave Selby. MARTIN’S ALL TIME NEW STREET XI: GK: IAN BARTON
RW: ALAN KENNEDY
RB: DANNY FIELD
CM: DAVE MURPHY
Always reliable, fantastic goalkeeper. Great shot stopper. He had great hands and unbelievable distribution. Was a great organiser of the defence and talker in the side.
I like Danny Field, I think he’s brilliant. He’s reliable. Comfortable on the ball and very good with his distribution. Again he’s a talkative player. He doesn’t waste passes and is a great tackler.
Class player, very good on the ball. Had loads of energy. Provided and created chances for the sides he played for. And he could also score goals by cutting in from the right wing.
I grew up with Dave and played football with him. Very commanding and very good on the ball. He was solid, He was the midfield general in any side he played for.
CM: DAVE SELBY
As I’ve said he was my favourite all time player I can’t really leave him out can i? His attitude during the game was exceptional and that desire to win would make him instrumental to my dream team!
LM: GUNNER YATES
RIGHT BACK | DANNY FIELD
LB: PAUL REIDY
Brilliant on the ball, great distribution and hardly gave the ball away. He was a clever player and worked hard for the team.
CB: STEVE BROWN (C)
Top quality centre back. Outstanding when he played for the club. Would dominate a game and is a great player, especially when you consider the difficult times the side had when he played.
CB: DAVE BIRD
As I mentioned earlier, he was a towering centre back and formed an excellent partnership with Steve Brown. Hardly anything would get past those two on the pitch.. An excellent captain and his leadership skills were second to none. I wouldn’t give him the title of “Mr New Street” for nothing!
I like Gunner. I think Gunner on his day is the best I’ve ever seen in that position and in this league. Ability wise he is unbelievable and if he comes on he can change hange a game and certainly influence a match with his wing play and ability to take a man on.
ST: SEAN ROGERS
Big, strong lad. He was excellent in the air and could hold the ball up really well. He would score goals for fun and he’s an excellent striker.
ST: VINNIE RUSHER
Vinnie had that ability to destroy defenders. He could take defenders on and fantastic ability to cross the ball. He’s shooting skills were also exceptional ceptional and would always hit the target.
MANAGER: MICK O’CONNOR
Great manager, he was really good with the players.. He knew football and had been around the game for a long time and at the top level. He always treated the players with respect but also als let them know what he expected from them at the same time. He was never afraid of talking to players in the right manner. A very nice guy as well.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street returned to match action last week against run away league leaders Laverstock & Ford. A fairly even first half saw the Street 2-0 down at halftime as two defensive mistakes were capitalised on by the league leaders. First a deep cross from the right hand side evaded both centre backs and was touched in off the far post by Chae Sykes in the 25th minute. The lead was doubled in the 38th minute when Laverstock broke down the left wing and another cross into the box found Russell Jones unmarked to score from close range. The game was effectively over 8 minutes into the second half when Laverstock were awarded a penalty that was converted by Archie Lovegrove. The Street scored a late consolation through a Alex Dockree penalty that resulted in Scott Kinge being stretchered off with a broken metatarsal.

XMAS FIXTURES THE LOST TRADITION OF CHRISTMAS DAY FOOTBALL
The hectic Christmas schedule may be a bone of contention for many in the game but it was not so long ago that there were actually matches on Christmas Day itself. That’s right: football was once as much part of the big day as sprouts and repeats of Only Fools and Horses. So why did this festive tradition die out and what are the chances of us seeing fixtures on 25 December again? At a time when we are constantly told, usually by managers and players rather than fans, that there is too much football being played at Christmas, the thought of a full Christmas Day fixture list is hard to comprehend. Games are already rammed into the festive period like a chocolate orange into a stocking, but there was a time when even Christmas Day itself was just like any other when it came to our national sport. Unlike now, when the vast majority of the population have little choice but to talk to 44
their relatives or endure the Queen’s speech, as recently as the 1960s the British public were actually able to go and watch a game of football – and they turned out in their thousands. Of course we all know the incredible story of the German and Allied troops who halted hostilities on 25 December 1914 and played a game of football on the western front, but even back then the concept of playing a match on Christmas Day wasn’t as crazy as it seems today. The first Christmas Day fixture was held in only the second season of the Football League back in 1889, as Preston North End beat Aston Villa 3-2 2 and the idea quickly caught on, particularly after the First World War. In the early part of the 20th century Christmas Day itself was just one of very few public holidays at the time, and football was one of the few activities people could enjoy as a family. Sprawling on the sofa and watching the box set you’d just been given by auntie simply wasn’t an option, so the next best thing was to go out to watch watc a game instead.
@AndoverNSfc |
facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet | www.ansfc.co.uk
And it wasn’t as if the now-traditional Boxing Day fixtures gave way to make room for Christmas Day games either. Teams simply played both. In fact Everton once played two matches on December 25th, then another the following day, something which would be absolutely unthinkable today, but not then. On Christmas morning they played against Blackburn Park Road at Anfield in a Lancashire Cup tie. Then in the afternoon they took part in an annual exhibition match against Ulster FC for the huge crowd who were obviously looking for any excuse to get out of the house. 24 hours later they travelled the short distance for a game with Bootle, which completed a trilogy that is downright ridiculous by today’s standards.
For logistical reasons Christmas Day games usually pitted local rivals against each other, which often threw-up a number of tasty derby games — though some were played in anything but the spirit of Christmas. Like when Blackburn Rovers faced Darwen in 1890, the match ended in violence as players and fans clashed. But as the Football League began to grow, clubs became willing to travel longer distances as a full public transport schedule meant fans and players could take trains and buses to away games. And with the longer distances teams were
prepared to travel, came the rather obscure tradition of Christmas double-headers. This is where teams would face each other on Christmas Day, before squaring-up again 24 hours later. As well as providing plenty of opportunity for festive feuds to be carried over, like a family get-together, the matches would often see extremely odd score lines as sides didn’t have to wait long for the opportunity to exact revenge. Heavy defeats were often avenged or reversed as the form book was thrown out of the window like an old Christmas tree in a lay-by. In 1914, Oldham Athletic played out a 1-1 draw at Bradford Park Avenue, then on Boxing Day hammered them 6-2 at home. While the Sheffield Owls beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at home, before being defeated 6-1 in North London 24 hours later. In an era when nearly all players drank and smoked, you can’t help but wonder if a little too much Christmas spirit was behind these strange scorelines. Between the two World Wars, Christmas Day football grew in popularity and it wasn’t unusual for children to receive tickets for games as presents from relatives, maybe looking for a little peace and quiet themselves? For the many thousands of fans that did venture out on December 25th, they were rarely disappointed as teams often served up something of a festive treat for this, the most wonderful time of the year. The 40 league matches played on Christmas Day 1940 were no exception. They provided a real goal-fest with Southend beating Clapton Orient 9-3, Bournemouth thrashing Bristol City 7-1, Mansfield hammering Stoke 7-2, while Bury and Halifax fought-out a 5-5 draw. Meanwhile, Norwich faced a Brighton & Hove Albion team that could only muster five players and had to put together a starting eleven which contained reserve

players and volunteers from the crowd. So it was no surprise when they lost 18-0 Several teams actually played two games that day, with the craziest of double headers being the clash between Leicester City and Northampton Town. The Foxes lost 5-2 at Northampton in the morning and then recovered from this heavy defeat to beat their opponents 7-2 back at Leicester that afternoon — no doubt after a hearty lunch. In 1949, over three million fans attended the Football League’s annual Christmas programme, with three sets of matches being played over a four-day period. Fans often joined together to sing carols before the match and shared a little festive spirit in the form of cigars, sweets, fruit and brandy on the terraces. But as the country began to move out of the post-war era and entered the more optimistic days of the 1950s, there was less of a need for games to be played on Christmas Day itself. By now many grounds had erected floodlights, meaning that games could be played at night, and didn’t have to take place during the few public holidays that existed at the time. 46
By the 1950s, 0s, attitudes had also changed when it came to playing sport on Christmas Day. Public transport became less reliable so crowds started to dwindle as fans actually preferred to stay at home with their families, either that or they had no choice. The final programme of games in England on December 25th was in the 1957-58 1957 season, which saw Blackpool hammer Leicester 5-1; 1; Manchester United beat Luton 3-0, 0, and Sheffield Wednesday and Preston draw a 4-4 4 thriller. Chelsea beat Portsmouth 7-4, 4, with a young Jimmy Greaves reaves finding the net four times for the Blues that day. But the Boxing Day “curse” struck once again when the two teams met the following day at Fratton Park and Portsmouth ran-out out 3-0 3 winners. The following year there were only three First Division matches ches played on Christmas Day and by 1959 just one. The last time English football was played on Christmas Day was when Blackpool faced Blackburn Rovers in 1965, which the Tangerines won 4-2. Christmas Day football was not so much of a tradition in Scotland, but fixtures were still fulfilled when the big day happened to

fall on a Saturday, though poor weather conditions and a reluctance of players to play would often put pay to holiday matches. The last scheduled round of league fixtures was on Christmas Day 1976 as Clydebank and St Mirren drew 2-2 in the First Division and Alloa Athletic beat Cowdenbeath 2-1 in the second. There was even a failed attempt to revitalise the tradition of Christmas Day fixtures as recently as 1983 when Brentford scheduled their game against Wimbledon for 11am on December the 25th.
We can only guess at how many people would be keen to watch Chelsea v West Ham United or Manchester United v Liverpool on Christmas evening with a glass of wine in hand after gorging themselves at the dinner table earlier in the day. Obviously there would be dissenters but it’s fair to say there would probably be plenty in favour too. More football anyone?
It seemed like a good idea but the game was doomed from the moment that Brentford official Eric White claimed the fixture would be, “the perfect opportunity for the husband to go to football while the wives stay at home and cook the turkey.” Protests from women’s groups meant the club were forced to play the game on Christmas Eve with Wimbledon eventually winning 4-3. With the clamour, particularly from foreign coaches, to reduce the Christmas programme, rather than increase it, the chances of a return to a full Christmas Day fixture list looks unlikely to say the least. But, as we all know, it’s the television companies that call the shots these days. The Festive football programme means almost blanket TV coverage right across the holiday period, so what harm would one more day do? Particularly one where the majority of the nation are sat in front of the television. In America it’s common to see huge audiences for traditional NFL and NBA matchups on Christmas Day, as friends and family gather round the television after lunch for a festive feast of sporting action between rivals like the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lons. It’s as much part of the tradition there as watching Dr Who or Downton Abbey is in the UK.

THE CLINIC
SAM ARMSTRONG Good afternoon and welcome to today’s match against Downton. I’ve recently joined the club as the First team’s Medic working alongside Jude our Physiotherapist. I have been a medic for various organisations over the last couple of years, and hope to qualify as a Paramedic in the upcoming years. I thrive on delivering the best possible first aid service to players and club visitors. I pride myself on dedication and knowledge within the medical field, and I am constantly looking at ways to improve my skill set, always ensuring I deliver over and above anybody’s expectations. Giving a patient confidence at a time when they feel most vulnerable gives me tremendous job satisfaction and I am delighted to be a part of New Street’s medical team. You’ll always find me in the dug-out or in the medical room.
The most commonly treated injuries within football is bone and muscle related, however we do see some minor and major trauma at times, which is where I excel with my knowledge. I am always following the game, to know exactly what has happened to one of our players, so I can respond promptly when needed. I ensure that I carry out pre and post player checks, to enable all players are fit to play, and any injuries or issues occur, I am up to date with them and treat them accordingly. We use effective equipment which allows us to carry out my job accordingly, knowing where everything is at the time when I most need it. I am the link between myself and my colleagues within the ambulance ambu service, and I am very capable of communicating effectively to the responders, ensuring they are fully briefed before they’re arrival on pitch side. I have the knowledge of knowing which hospitals are best for the injury, and what will deliver the most mo appropriate treatment when most needed. I hope you see you all around the club soon, Enjoy the game.

LEAGUE LOOK THE LATEST IN SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE A splendid day in the FA Vase for the Sydenhams League with four sides progressing to the next round. All deserve credit but pride of place goes to New Milton Town who in defeating Gloucestershire side Longlevens, have reached the Third Round for the first time in their current guise, having made the Quarter Final in 1998/99 as Lymington & New Milton. The game was goalless at the break but goals from Conor Jevon and Luke Stone saw the Linnets through. Fareham made the immensely long journey to deepest Cornwall and made the return trip enjoyable with a goal in each half from Charlie Cooper and Archie Willcox giving them a 2-0 victory over Helston Athletic.
House the scorer – and Horndean remain third after a goalless draw at Hamble Club. Both Blackfield eld & Langley and AFC Stoneham maintained their push for the top five with comfortable home victories. The Watersiders defeated Bournemouth 4-1; 4 Sami Makhloufi (2, River Smith and Dom Panesar Dower, Matt Lock on target for the PoppiesPoppies whilst two goals from Scott Hills added to one from Duane Martins proved too much for Tadley Calleva. In Division One leaders Laverstock & Ford took their tally of League Goals to 45 and remain seven points clear at the top of the table. The usual names appear on the scoresheet scoresh – Chae Sykes (2), Jake Rawkins and Russell Jones – while Charlie Rattley and John Cole replied for Romsey. Alton continue to lead the chasing pack after although the 3-1 1 scoreline may or may not be allowed to stand as the game was abandoned at a very late ate stage against East Cowes Vics on the Island – Oli Graham. Luke Perkins and George Bowerman for Alton and Jordan Chapman for Vics but third place Follands were held to a draw at home by Verwood. Two regular names credited with the goals – Clayd Roach and an Matt Vining respectively.
Christchurch overcame stiff opposition in the form of Cribbs at Hurn Bridge with a best of three goal victory and Nick Swann and Will Fletcher on the scoresheet. First Division US Portsmouth confirmed their promotion credentials with a 2-1 win over Premier Division Brockenhurst in the only all Wessex tie – goals from James Franklyn and Andy Todd against the Badgers’ reply from Toby Bailey.
Andover Town, going well before the lockdown, went down to their second defeat since the resumption with Newport claiming a very good 3-1 3 win at the Portway with Connor Kelly scoring twice and Jordan Browne adding the third, Zac Z Hine scored for the Town. Bemerton were also among the goals as Fawley, who scored six in midweek, found the boot or boots on the other foot as they conceded five without reply. Greg Peel and Justin Bennett both scored twice with Ronan Clancy adding the fifth.
In the Premier Division AFC Portchester’s skilful marketing of the visit of League leaders Hamworthy United was rewarded with a capacity crowd but a disappointing outcome as the Hammers recorded a 4-0 victory to remain top of the table, goals from Cameron Munn (2), Eddie Hodge and Steve Devlin did the damage for a side who could well make their mark this season.
Petersfield and Hythe & Dibden shared four goals and the points at Love Lane – Bailey Newbury and Will Essai for the Rams and Zac Willis and Steve Green for Hythe – while Downton gained three valuable points at Totton and Eling with a 3-0 3 victory. Tom Moseley, Ben Starr and Jack Mann with the goals that left the home side still bottom of the table.
Lymington retained their second place and 100% record with a lone goal victory at bottom club Amesbury – Sam
Lastly, an impressive win for the ever improving Ringwood who marked their trip to Whitchurch with a 4-1 1 victory with goals from Shaun Prentice, Harrison on Fay, Ryan Hamm and Ryan Osman; whilst George Bishop notched the Jamboys consolation.

SWIFTS UPDATE The Swifts faced local rivals Broughton in what was always a hotly contested game. The Swifts came into this after a 4-0 thumping over this seasons surprise package Netley and turned in up in a confident mood to carry on from Wednesdays good work. But it was the home side who scored first, with a well worked goal and good finish to put The Swifts behind. The Swifts showed great resilience and started playing the football which has been eye catching at times. Ellis Cleary-Tucker found some room on the right hand side and delivered a superb cross for Lee Morris to direct his header over the goalkeeper and into the net, 1-1. The Swifts then pushed and dominated the game, Sam Thomson then caught the home goalkeeper cold with a cross come shot, to make it 1-2! Sam scoring 2 goals in as many games as Wednesdays man of the match showed again why he is so highly rated.
The Swifts didn’t stop there, with Ellis Cleary-Tucker Tucker bringing the ball down from a corner and smashing it into the roof of the net, 1-3! The Swifts were still not finished with Cam Thatcher finding himself one on one and slotted home with a cool and composed c finish to make it 1-4! 4! What a turn around! The Swifts were controlling the game in the midfield with Ross Allen, Callum Buck abs the returning Ryan Facey dictating the pace of the game. The home side then managed to pull a goal back from a deflected effort which managed to wrong foot Mike Horne, 2-4 2 a very busy first half then came to a close. The second half started and it was all too comfortable for the Swifts who looked dangerous every ry time they had the ball. Joe Woodward was proving to hot too handle with the Swifts forward being able to hold the ball up and find team mates at will. Sam Cooke came on to make his Swifts debut, the new signing nearly scored with his first touch of the e game, what a start to the green and black that would of been. Finally a breakthrough which killed the game off once and for all, Liam Dufall was sent through with a thunderous strike which went straight past the keeper. 2-5 2 to The Swifts it ended with the boys now scoring a much needed 9 goals in 2 games.

LADIES ANDOVER NEW STREET 2 PORTSMOUTH DEVELOPMENT 5
STREET LADIES SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON AGAINST STRONG POMPEY SIDE Street ladies were left to rue a below par performance in the first half as they suffered their first defeat of the season. After the postponed game against Cowes due to a waterlogged pitch, the Street looked off the pace in the opening half against a strong Portsmouth side.
Further goals followed before half-time half and the Street were relieved to hear the halfhalf time whistle so they could regroup at 4-0 down at the break. The second half was a complete turnaround with the Street competing against their opponents and winning the ball higher up the pitch. Nikki Barnes was pushed up front and responded with a goal that further lifted the Street.
Pompey were keeping possession much better than New Street and were exploiting the space on the pitch and using the ball effectively.
Barnes was on target again from a corner shortly later and an unlikely comeback was suddenly on. This however was denied when Portsmouth broke on the left hand side and scored to make it 5-2. 5
It wasn’t long before they made it 1-0 when they were able to break through down the right hand side to score.
The Street continued to match their opponents for the remainder of the game but unable to reduce the deficit further.
The second goal was not long in coming as Portsmouth played a ball through the middle of the pitch and were quickly through to score and give the Street a mountain to climb.
Manager Kyla Tobin said after the game; “We We showed great character in the second half as we didn’t compete in the first half. We did start with a different formation and maybe we shouldn’t have tried that today, but we were excellent second half. Kate Probert was outstanding in midfield, constantly winning the ball for us and making us tick in the second half.”

When I left last season I thought it was the right decision as I feel the time away has made me a better player. After speaking to John and Danny and seeing the calibre of signings coming in helped massively with my decision. ”

OUR NEXT OPPOSITION
UP NEXT
FORMED: 2013 | NICKNAME: THE BLUEBIRDS | 2018/19 SEASON: 18TH IN WESSEX ONE FOLLOW THEM ON TWITTER: @ANDOVERTOWNFC | COLOURS: BLUE & WHITE GROUND: THE PORTWAY STADIUM | MANAGER: RON BERTIE
WHO?
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?
Now in their 3rd season back in the Wessex One after being relegated as punishment for failing to take promotion to the Division One West of the Southern League, when they finished runners-up in the Premier Division in 2017-18. The following season saw major changes at the club with Ron Bertie in charge being assisted by Jason Holmes. The club finished 18th in the 2018-19 season with 26 points. The following season saw progression but was cut short due to the global pandemic.
Don’t remind us. The 5-2 5 defeat in September is still fresh in the memory. Before that the two sides met last season at Foxcotte Park, with a below par Street performance fortunately winning 2-1 2 in October 2019. Callum Sweeney opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Zach Hine equalised before Jake Curtis headed in his first Street goal.
KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU A large number of players have played for both clubs, including current Street players Shane Lock, Alex Dockree, Danny Urry, Matt Scott, Gary Thorne and Gunner Yates have all played for the Bluebirds, while Dave Tasker, Owen Trapnell and Zach Hine are current Town players. Reece Rusher, Zac Neve and Sam Mills have also represented both clubs in the past. 68
STADIUM – THE PORTWAY STADIUM The club took over Andover F.C.'s Portway Stadium following a vote at Test Valley Borough Council in July 2013. The stadium had been built in 1989 at a cost of £850,000. A large stand with bench seating was built on one side of the pitch and slightly raise above it, with the other three sides left open. After being refurbished, the ground was reopened on 28 December 2013 for a match against Team Solent, with Andover winning 4–0 0 in front of a crowd of 161.

THE LAST WORD BY MATT BADCOCK – EDITOR AT THE NON LEAGUE PAPER So, it's Marine against Mourinho. Who says the magic has gone from the FA Cup? Last week's glamour third round tie, which pitted the Northern Premier League Division One North West Mariners with Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur. A difference of 166 league places to be precise – is a Christmas fairytale come true for Neil Young's men and indeed for all the football purists who vigorously defend the FA Cup's proud stance as the greatest cup competition in the world. Who would've believed that Marine's modest Rossett Park backdrop of the BBC live broadcast where presenter Mark Chapman chatted by Turner and other FA Cup heroes from Chorley and Stockport County - would soon play host to 'The Special One' and his star-studded Spurs side in one of the ties of the century? And the wasn't just the Mariners being looked after by the FA Gods. Stockport were also pitted against Premier League opposition in West Ham United, Chorley were drawn with Wayne Rooney's Derby County and Boreham Wood got 2004 finalists Millwall. All at home, all undoubtedly in front of the TV cameras. It was stuff that dreams are made of. 70
With five promotions as a manager under his belt – including three at former club Chester – not a lot fazes the wily Young in the world of football. But the humble surroundings at his new home at Rossett Park, however, clearly hold a place in his heart. Young talks openly of regularly bumping into the assistant referee as he leaps out of his manager's dugout and watching neighbours peer through the wire fence from adjoining gardens as his team take to the field. Indeed, ndeed, tied to one of the aforementioned aforemen wire fences in a sign with '29' on it, indicating which house to retrieve the ball from should it be hoofed over in that direction. Imagine dear old Mrs Smith wrapped up in front of the fire and enjoying a peaceful afternoon's telly only to be disturbed by a fully-kitted kitted Harry Kane knocking at her door and asking for his ball back!
While the probability is that the likes of Kane maybe afforded the weekend off with Marine's centre-halves halves desperate to lock horns with the England captain, other ot star names will be called upon to get the job done. Dele Ali, Lucas Moura, Harry Winks...all are likely to play a part in an occasion to remember for the Marine faithful on Merseyside. You can bet your bottom dollar, however, that the Spurs boys are not n looking forward to it one little bit!
