JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s encounter against Downton in Wessex League 1. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to manager Ben Smith, his staff and players plus the committee and fans, who have made the journey to Andover tonight. Downton have made a great start to the season and like us will have their eye on promotion this season. Tonight’s game promises to be an exciting match and from my viewpoint, the lads have something to prove tonight after Saturday’s disappointment. We were also gutted to hear about Danny Urry’s leg injury. Dan had only just forced his way into the side and was looking like his old self, hopefully he will back sooner rather than later but with all injuries it takes time and rest – I for one know all about the frustrations of not being out there helping your team-mates out in the heat of battle.

Massive Fixture Recently we travelled to Fawley and I must say the performance wasn’t great but we got the job done, I’d take a 3-1 win away from home in any fixture. At the end of the season we will look at results not how we played.

4

“WE WE TRAVELLED TO FAWLEY AND I MUST SAY THE PERFORMANCE WASN’T GREAT BUT WE GOT THE JOB DONE, I’D TAKE A 3--1 WIN AWAY FROM HOME IN ANY FIXTURE. AT THE END OF THE SEASON WE WILL LOOK AT RESULTS NOT HOW WE PLAYED.” .”

Sadly the performance rolled over to Laverstock…where, to be honest neither team looked like doing anything but then Lavvy scored and we completely crumbled, by far our worst performance of the season, it was really disappointing and a big bump back down to earth after being unbeaten in the league since the opener. Somehow I had to get the lads up for what was our biggest game in New Street’s recent history, an FA Vase away trip to Cribbs FC in the first round proper! Well they didn’t disappoint. I changed the shape and personnel slightly and tried to get them to play a way that could have a chance against a side that were top of the league above! I’d watched quite a lot on YouTube of Cribbs and got an idea of how they’d play, I went with what I thought could counter that and it worked, the lads were fantastic. We wanted it far more than them and sometimes it comes down to that, they didn’t have an answer to what we threw at them. Thanks once again for your support on Saturday, although it didn’t get us over the line, please continue it again tonight. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for our second home game in the space of four days. Welcome to our friends from Downton, who will no doubt bring a large following with them as they always do and hopefully make it a cracking atmosphere under the Foxcotte lights. Talk of the Robins always makes me fondly remember two of New Street’s greatest old boys, who have played for both the Street and Downton, Vinnie Rusher and Nic Turpin. The signing of Rusher was a masterstroke. He was truly an inspirational player, who was committed and had a presence on the pitch and in the dressing room.

6

Then there was Nic, who is still going strong for our Swifts side and could cause any defence problems with his strength and hold-up play. It certainly felt like a defeat on Wednesday with 2 points dropped against a good Millbrook side, which played some great football and Mark Barker, scored one of the best goals of the season but having got our noses in front, we should be seeing the game out and dealing with whatever the opposition throw at us. But we move on and look to bounce back against another good side in Downton this evening. Ben smith looks to have got his Robins side playing and achieving results this season and will no doubt be eyeing a place in the top 5 at least. So it makes for a very entertaining evening with both sides going for the win. The league is still close with no team running away with it following Bemerton’s recent blip of two defeats in their last 2 matches. It shows that anyone can beat anyone on the day or evening and that no side can take the opposition for granted.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

After not having a home game for awhile, then we have back-toback home games and even more games to come in what is a hectic month with 5 home games in a row after our trip to Ringwood on Saturday.

“ WE KNEW MILLBROOK WOULD MAKE IT TOUGH FOR US AND THEY KEPT THE BALL REALLY WELL, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY TOOK AN EARLY LEAD.”

We knew Millbrook would make it tough for us and they kept the ball really well, especially when they took an early lead. It took us most of the first half to get going and when we finally did we took our opportunity to score through Cookie. Having got back into the game just before half-time, it was really disappointing to concede in the fashion that we did straight after the restart of the second half. A change from the management and we looked and felt a lot better shape wise and were able to put the Millbrook defence under more pressure and it told with Reece being presented with a tap in from close range.

Having aving defended so well against gainst Cribbs the week before it was gutting to concede the late penalty with virtually no time to respond. re We need to put that result behind us and have the perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways this evening, although it won’t won be easy against a very determined Downton side.

We need to continue to work hard and that’ss something I hope is evident to everyone watching. We have some important games in November that could really shape our season. We also have a couple of exciting cupcup ties to look forward too as well but we must take it a game at a time starting this evening. There is nothing better than an evening game under the Foxcotte Park lights so please get behind us again this evening, evening your vocal support can make a difference tonight. to Most importantly, enjoy njoy the game and stay safe.

We were well on the front foot and got ourselves in front thanks to Lockey’s sharpness and reactions while everyone else just stopped, he was quickly onto the rebound after his first effort was parried out.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT SATURDAY WHEN THEY MAKE THE TRIP TO SOUTH TO PLAY RINGWOOD TOWN AT THE MACRA COMMUNITY STADIUM

RINGWOOD TOWN WHO? Ringwood Town, aka the Town, from Long Lane, are the Street’s opponents next Saturday. Richard Morse’s side lost 2-1 against Andover Town last Saturday and currently lie in fourteenth place in League 1. .HOW THEY DOING? After a shaky start with defeats to new boys Millbrook and a 6-1 home defeat to Downton, The Town then impressively won 6-2 at home to last season leaders Laverstyock & Ford, but the Town’s league form has been inconsistent so far this season. That inconsistency is shown in recent weeks a 4-3 home victory over Infinity thanks to a Harry Smith hat-trick was followed up with a 2-0 defeat to Petersfield Town, Brandon Jewell scoring in the second half after Ryan Kennedy had given Petersfield the lead in the 33rd minute. The Town have also exited the FA Vase to Downton (1-2) and the Russell Cotes Cup to AFC Stoneham (0-4).

WHERE? The Street make their first trip to Long Lane in two years. The Street faithful have a 100-mile round-trip to get there and back. It is pay on the day for Street fans and details can be found on the opposite page. There is seating in the main stand on the halfway line opposite the dugouts. The Town’s home record this season currently stands with 2 wins and 3 defeats in their five matches at home, scoring 14 goals but conceding 17.

10

HOW TO GET THERE? From Andover take the A303 East towards Basingstoke before taking the A34 south and then taking the M3 south towards Southampton. At junction 13, use the left two lanes towards the Southampton Docks/Bournemouth. Then merge onto the M27. Continue onto the A31, then after 8.2 miles turn onto Pickett Hill. Continue onto Hightown Hill and then Hightown Road. Just before half a mile turn left onto Crow Lane and follow the road to the left to stay on Crow Lane. Then after 0.6 miles turn right onto Moortown Lane. Long Lane is then 0.5 miles on the left and the ground is on the left handside.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? The

Street won on their last Wessex League visit to Long Lane in December 2019, winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Matt Scott and a 87th minute winner from Gerson Ramos on his league debut for the Street. Overall the Street have only won 3 times of their 12 visits to Long Lane, with two of those victories coming in their last two visits. The second victory was during the promotion season in 2018 when we won 3-1 at Long Lane with goals from Callum Sweeney, Zach Hine and Jazz Beavis. The Town’s consolation goal coming from Ben Harris. The other victory came in March 2005 with the Street winning 3-2.

welcome DOWNTON FC

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Downton Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Robins make the journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time since their 2-1 defeat in December last year. The final match of the 2020-21 season, with the season being abandoned due to the pandemic. This evening’s match promises to be a an entertaining game with Downton coming into the game one place above the Street, having made an impressive start to their season. They didn’t get off to a good start though as they lost 2-1 at home to Folland Sports. A better away day followed with a 6-1 win at Ringwood Town, thanks to goals from Marcel Laptas (2), TJ Moseley, Sam Howe and Paul Gulliver. An impressive 2-2 draw at rivals Bemerton Heath was followed with an entertaining 4-3 home win over Andover Town. 2-0 wins against Newport IOW and Ash United followed. They then were brought down to earth somewhat with a 5-0 away defeat to a rejuvenated Laverstock & Ford. Bournemouth were seen off in the Wessex League Cup, before Fawley came away with a point following a 2-2 draw.

14

Laverstock & Ford were defeated on penalties at the Nest following a 2-2 2 draw. And progression was made in the FA Vase with a narrow 2-1 shoreline away at Ringwood Town. The Street’ss visit came next and the Robins advanced to the next round thanks to a fine freekick from m Sam Howe but they lost TJ Moseley, who suffered a bad injury. Back to back wins over Petersfield and Totton & Eling at home was followed up with a bizarre 4-4 4 draw with Infinity. Trailing 4-1 4 to the Southampton thampton side, the Robins powered back substitute bstitute Lewis Connor scoring a brace and Shaun Kitcher and new signing Callum Kitcher ensuring a point. The Robins FA Vase journey ended in the first round with a 4-0 0 away defeat at Royal Wootton Bassett,, before last Saturday’s Saturday 5-1 victory at East Cowes. Cameron Butler got the Robins off to the perfect start after 2 minutes; this was quickly doubled by Danny Clarke. Shaun Prentice made it 3-0 0 before East Cowes reduced the deficit before Sam Howe got a brace towards the end. The Robins will be looking to continue their fine run and looking to extend their record over the Street from past meetings – something you can read much more on the following pages.

FROM THE

AWAY END

Daniel Newman is a club Chairman and has been following the Robins for over 20 years, a previous player at youth level and then into the adult side. Tonight he answers the questions in the away end...

DANIEL: I played for Downton at Youth level then for the firts team for 15 to 20 years. I captained the first team all my playing career so its an honour to now be Chairman of our wonderful club.

WORD ON THE STREET: What have been the high and low points to the season so far? DANIEL: High points so far would be beating Ringwood Town in the FA Vase and also holding Bemerton Heath to a 2-2 draw at their place. Low points would be the Vase exit and the awful injury to TJ Moseley. WOTS: Which Downton player do Street need to keep an eye on tonight and why?

WOTS: Who is your favourite Downton player of all time and why? DANIEL: I have two, First is Colin “Hoppy” Hopkins. He was the best goalkeeper to play at Wessex League level. My second is Ben Smith. My right arm/leg on the pitch. We played centre half together for over 10 seasons!

DANIEL: Marcel Laptas. He’s quick, strong and clinical in front of goal. A proper centre forward.

WOTS: Which is your favourite season following Downton? And why?

WOTS: How good a job is Ben Smith doing? Does he have a good relationship with the fans?

DANIEL: When we won Wessex League 1 in 2010/11. What a team we had then. We lost 1 game all season.

DANIEL: Benj is a Downton legend. He simply is Downton. The fans, players and club officials think the world of him.

WOTS: What would be a successful season for Downton? And what’s your prediction for today’s game?

WOTS: Can the Robins make it back to the Wessex Premier? DANIEL: Yes we certainly can. We have a young, hungry squad, who in my opinion would make a superb Wessex Premier side in the next season or two. WOTS: Tell us about you. Why do you support Downton? When did it all start? What was your first game? What do you remember about it?

16

season.

DANIEL: I think a place in the top five this year would be a great As for tonight, it will be a tough game a against a superb New Street side. I’m going to predict a 2-2 draw.

A STREET... AND A ROBIN A number of players have served both the Street and the Robins down the years. Nic Turpin, Vinnie Rusher, Alex Campbell and Dan Sullivan are names familiar to both sets of supporters. One name that does stick out is Mark Keogh. Mark started at Andover, where he played one season and made over 35 appearances for the Lions in the 2005-06 season. He was then snapped up by Bemerton Heath Harlequins and became a regular starter at Moon Park over four seasons. A move to Jeff Softley’s Downton in the summer of 2011 came next, with the Robins having been promoted as Wessex League 1 champions the previous season. Keogh made 37 appearances for the Robins in his one season at the Nest as the Robins finished in a respectful 6th position with 76 points. The Robins did win silverware that season when they triumphed in the Salisbury Hospitals Cup. This led to Keogh moving to Phil Andrew’s Street in 2012. Mark made his Street debut in a league cup first round tie at Foxcotte Park against Stockbridge in a 4-3 defeat with a certain Lewis Alderman scoring for Bridge. Keogh then made his league debut on the 8th of September at Fleet Spurs. He went on to make 28 appearances that season as the Street struggled at the wrong end of the table.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

18

The following season saw him score his one and only goal for Street in a 6-2 defeat at Amesbury Town. The Street were continuing to struggle in 15th place when Keogh left to play for Hythe & Dibden in 2014-15 season, where he Mark Keogh made 15 appearances. Keogh would eventually return to Street in the 2017-18 season as he made 11 starting appearances and 4 off the bench as the Street finished runners-up to Christchurch and gain promotion to the Wessex Premier for the first time. A move to Andover Town followed for one season, before he made another return to Foxcotte Park in the 2019-20 season that was cut short due to the pandemic. Keogh is still involved with the club as he manages one of the youth sides and had been involved with the Swifts side last season. bluffers guide Downton Football Club... THE CLUB Downton Football Club was formed in September 1905, following a meeting which had been arranged by the Rev J.H. Phillips. Early results were not very encouraging. However, after the First World War in 1919 the Robins fared better after entering the Salisbury & District League. In order to progress further, Downton joined the Hampshire League in 1968/69, winning promotion in 1971/72. More promotions followed in 1978/79 and 1979/80. in 1992/93, The Robins were elected to the Wessex League – They won the League Cup in 1994–95, a season that also saw them win the Hampshire FA's Russell Cotes Cup. When the league gained a second division in 2004, Downton became members of Division One. However, after finishing bottom of the division in 2004–05 they were relegated to Division Two. The following season saw the club finish fourth, earning promotion back to the renamed Premier Division. They were relegated again in 2007–08, having finished bottom of the Premier Division. The club went on to win the Division One title in 2010–11 to earn promotion back to the Premier Division, but were relegated to Division One in 2013–14. DOWNTON – THE VILLAGE Downton can trace its ancient inhabitants to the Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon times. Evidence of Neolithic occupation was found at Downton in 1956–7 during archaeological excavations in advance of a housing development. Downton was probably the principal village in the 7th and 8th centuries, and became important as the centre of the manor belonging to the Bishop of Winchester.

20

The manor house at Standlynch was built in 1733 for Sir Peter Vandeput and extended in 1766 by Henry Dawkins, plantation planta owner and Member of Parliament. In 1814 the nation bought the estate and gave it to Lord Nelson's heirs. They changed its name to Trafalgar Park, to commemorate Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. For about a decade from around 1961, Downton had an important part to play in British motorsport. Its Downton Engineering Works produced some of the motors used by racing cars.

FAMOUS AMOUS PEOPLE FROM DOWNTON Walter Judd played youth football for Downton and Nomansland. Before B becoming a professional footballer, he had been conscripted as a "Bevin Boy", working at Blackwood Colliery in South Wales. He was signed by Southampton in August 1949 and spent his first two years at The Dell in the reserves, for whom he scored 27 goals in 34 matches. After forcing his way into the Saint’s ’s side he then earned a call-up to the England B team. The following season would see Judd start as first choice oice centre-forward centre before a career ending injury occurred.

R for Retirement. What would you like to do after you give up playing? I’m a West Ham season ticket holder so it’ll have to be to spend my weekends following them more often.

scout report

Downton will no doubt want to put last season’s short campaign behind them. Similar to the Street, the Robins could not find the consistency that put them in the promotion chase during the 2019-20 season.

FREDE ERICKS

CLARK

The Robins started the 2020-21 season in dire form failing to win a single game for their first six matches, which included home defeats to Alton and New Milton Town and also a 0-0 draw with Bemerton Heath Harlequins. The season ended just at the right time for the Robins and have already over doubled their points tally from last season. A closer look at Downton’s season so far Ben Smith’s side are sixth in the Wessex League 1 with 24 points having played 12, won 7, drawn 3 and lost two games. The Robins home form is impressive (four wins in 6 matches). Their away form is also good with three wins and 2 draws from 6 games. What’s more their recent form is also impressive as they are unbeaten in their last five league matches, winning 3 and drawing two since their 5-0 away defeat at Laverstock & Ford. The goals have started to flow as well as they have scored 16 and conceded 9 in the last 5 games including their most recent victory – 5-1 away at East Cowes on Saturday. Recent fixtures between the two sides have been relatively close and add to the mix the fact the Robins are a point ahead of the Street, it makes tonight’s match even more fascinating. How will they play? Who are their danger men? Downton are expected to line-up in their 4-4-2 formation tonight and possess a lot of strength in the middle of the park with a blend of energy, physicality and creativity. Matthew Fredericks will start in goal for the visitors and will captain the side. He will be protected by centre back Sam Moss with Sam Howe operating at left back, but can cause problems from dead ball situations as shown in last month’s League Cup tie at the Nest.

LAVERSTOCK & FORD 3-0 STREET JONES 66, 67, 72

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street’s 8-match unbeaten run in League 1 came to an end with a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Laverstock & Ford. The Bulldogs struck twice midway through the second half and sealed the win with 18 minutes to go with Laverstock striker Russell Jiones grabbing a hattrick. The match started with the home side starting strongly and Street keeper Michael Wetherall had to re-act smartly to save at close range from Archie Lovegrove. They maintained the early pressure, making good use of the through ball, before New Street’s first attack saw Alexis Aguero snatch a Shane Lock cross off Ross Cook’s head. Jordan Matthews sent a free header straight at Weatherall and as the visitors began to find a foothold in the game Cook was narrowly offside and the referee played an advantage when they would have preferred the free kick. Jake Rawkins fired across the face of the Street goal and Cook’s strength and persistence won a corner which was cleared with some difficulty. Both Max Allen and Reece Rusher was denied by a smart full stretch saves by Bulldog keeper Alexis Aguero and Shane Lock was also inches wide as Street desperately tried to respond. Michael Owen and Daryll Phillips were introduced as the Street tried to get something from the game but it was Laverstock that could and perhaps should have scored again when Jones and Dom Jackson broke clear but then left the ball to each other and allowing a defender to make the block. Jackson was foiled by Weatherall and the keeper gratefully held on to a free header from a corner before Street had one final chance but Rusher’s free kick cannoned to safety off the defensive wall, though it was www.ansfc.co.uk all too little and toofacebook.com/AndoverNewStreet late.

CRIBBS 1-2 STREET HODGSON 90+1

COOK 70, LOCK 74

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street became history makers as they beat their Hellenic League opponents and put their name in the Second Round draw for the first time in the club’s history. Street quickly found themselves on the back foot with Cribbs forcing five corners in the opening four minutes largely spearheaded by the pacy Nick Jones on the left flank. Street came back with a Shane Lock effort that was inches too high and a Darryl Phillips lob that the goalkeeper was grateful to see land on the top of the net and another Lock effort went across the face of the goal and the wrong side of the far post. Sean O’Brien was at full stretch to hold on to a low drive from Jake Hodgson, his first save of any real note though Cribbs did fashion one more chance before the whistle, but Hodgson’s shot was both high and wide and the half ended with the visitors perhaps the happier of the two sides.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

On the re-start New Street were quicker in to their stride and Cook, one on one with the goalkeeper, slid the ball the wrong side of the post before having a second attempt well saved by Kingston after Lock created the opening. The deadlock was broken when a superb reverse pass from Lock sent Cook clear on the left and he cleverly steered the ball across the keeper and just inside the far post. And just 4 minutes later Lock doubled their advantage when Lock drove forward and from some twenty yards found the bottom left-hand corner of the net with Kingston well beaten. Cribbs did pull one back deep in stoppage time but the Street would advance into the next round with Adam Pearson a tower of strength in the air when the defence were put under pressure.

LOCK ON HISTORIC DAY Shane Lock recently celebrated making 200 appearances for the club but nothing could compare to all of those matches to the victory over Cribbs a couple of weeks ago. The historic victory saw the Street progress to the 2nd round of the FA Vase for the first time in the club’s history. “It’s absolutely amazing.” said Lock to Word on the Street. “I’ve played in some big games for the club over the years and we have won cup finals, but the victory today with the support we received and to beat a side at the top of their division is probably one of my finest moments in a Street shirt.” Lock played a crucial part in both goals, playing a reverse pass into Ross Cook, that sent the striker through on goal to score the first. Then the energetic midfielder turned his marker and drilled a low shot from around 20 yards into the bottom corner to extend the Street’s lead. It didn’t however looked like it would be Lock’s afternoon, as he had missed several chances in the first half. “I was disappointed not to get on the score sheet earlier, the most frustrating thing for me

was I didn’tt hit the target. But it’s it a great win and this is a hard place to come, but we could have been out of sight by the time they scored, I’ve I missed 3 chances, Cookies dragged one wide at the start of the second half and a Mikey Davis should ould have buried a chance late on. If half of those go in we are looking at 4-0 4 and things are different.” Lock paid tribute to the strength and depth of the Street’ss squad following the recent form that has seen Street challenging near the top of the table. “Both Both John and JC have built a really good squad,” Lock told Word on the Street. “They have a tough task in keeping everyone happy but it’s it a nice task to have because we have so many good players to call all upon when we need them. We need everyone to push for a place in the team to spur the others on.” “You You can understand why we were struggling at first,” Lock said. “We We had a few younger players that had to get use to this level of football. Players like ke Cam Thatcher, Joe Rogers are learning all the time, but we’ve ve got in players like Ross Cook and Daryll Phillips and they have made a big difference, you need players like them playing at this level and above.”

YESTERDAY’S PAGES

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to a previous clash with Downton in 2020.

Andover New Street 2-1 Downton 19th December ember 2020 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2020/21 season with a 2-0 away victory over Newport IOW, thanks to a debut goal from Ally McCracken and Shane Lock securing the win in the second half. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 defeat at home against Peterasfield, with the unfortunate Scott KInge scoring an own goal late on. Cup defeats followed at Bashley and New Milton – on penalties. A much needed win at home to lowly Totton & Eling with Brett Denham getting off the mark with two goals, set-up a midweek league match against near neighbours Andover Town. The Street looked in a commanding position 2-0 up at half-time through a spectacular Danny Urry strike and a Scott Kinge header, but a bizarre second-half and some questionable referee decisions resulted in a 5-2 defeat and the Street finishing with only 7 players – two sent off and two in the sin-bin. Further draws against Hythe & Dibden, Downton and Fawley saw the Street in mid-table and losing ground to the sides at the top of the table. A narrow midweek home win against Whitchurch United didn’t seem to get the recation needed as defeats against Romsey Town and runaway leaders Laverstock & Ford followed. Worse was to come from the Laverstock defeat with midfielder Scott KInge stretchered off with a serious injury. Downton were the next visitors to Foxcotte Park, who themselves were not having the best of seasons after the previous campaign had seen them challenging for promotion before the

It was through Harding that the Street took the lead halfway through the first half when he neatly controlled a high ball on the right wing and played a delightful cross field ball for Shane Lock to score. Harding would then get on the score sheet himself minutes later as the Street went in at half-time in the ascendancy. ascendancy The Robins however came out positive in the second half and reduced the deficit to 2-1 2 when TJ Moseley finished off a fine flowing move but despite putting the Street defence under pressure they could not find an equaliser. This would d all be played in vain however as at 4pm that very afternoon it was announced that the country would go back into lockdown over Christmas and well into the New Year, which would mean a second abandonment of the season, one that I think both Street and Downton nton were keen to put behind them.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS No easy rides for Horndean in 'most competitive' Wessex League Premier Division for several seasons

Roach seals Royales Move

Horndean manager Michael Birmingham believes the Wessex League Premier Division is the most competitive it's been for a number of years this season. Horndean head into it having been held to a 0-0 draw by rivals AFC Portchester on Saturday despite Steve Ramsey being shown a straight red card for the visitors inside two minutes. As a result, Birmingham's men dropped down a place to third in the table with Baffins Milton Rovers leapfrogging them after a weekend win at Amesbury. And, with ninth-placed Alton visiting Five Heads Park next, the Horndean boss is expecting another tough run-out in what he deems as one of the most competitive Wessex Premier's for several seasons. Birmingham said: ‘Alton have been outstanding. They’ve got great honesty, they’ve got a very, very good manager who knows his stuff, the boys certainly play for him - they’re going to be a very difficult team to play against. ‘They’re not going to be easy, there are no easy games in this league, this league is probably the most competitive it’s been for a good six or seven years. ‘You had Sholing and Sholing were outstanding, apart from those couple of years, it’s been competitive. This now, I think it’s a really competitive league.’ Horndean had both Tommy Tierney and Alfie Lis forced off through injury in the weekend stalemate with Portchester and they will have to wait to see if either are available to face Alton. But Birmingham is hopeful of being able to call on some of the several first-teamers who missed the Royals meeting against Alton.

36

Folland Sports striker Clayd Roach has signed for Wessex Premier AFC Portchester. The Pacey Striker/Winger is current top scorer in the Wessex League 1 and will bring plenty of goals to the Portchester attack, scoring 16 in 9 starts this season! The Planemakers, who currently sit in second place in the league are surely to miss Roach’s goals as he nearly has scored half the sides total goals this season – 39. Roach’s last appearance for Folland Sports was back in mid September, when he was substituted during the 41 defeat at Bemerton Heath Harlequins

ROUND-UP Fareham Town hoping for similar feeling at Cams Alders

Pete Stiles is refusing to look too far ahead as Fareham Town hope for a repeat of their last home performance when they welcome Shaftesbury on Saturday. Fareham produced a stunning victory to defeat Jersey Bulls on penalties to progress to the second round of the FA Vase last weekend. “Every game is a tough game in this division at the moment, we’ll just have to keep going. It’s not the end of the world a draw at the moment. It’s a long, long season with funny twists and turns to go yet.”

Moneyfields FC thank local football community for their support Moneyfields FC have thanked the local football community for their support and donations after one of their players was the victim of a serious assault. The Portsmouth-based club have been inundated with messages of goodwill since news broke that defender Stanlie Hopkins was hospitalised after an incident in the Red Lion pub car park in Cosham on Monday. An online Crowfunder set up by the club to raise £1,000 for the player – who remains in hospital in Southampton – has already seen that total passed in only a few hours. Portsmouth FC have also donated a signed shirt to be auctioned or raffled off, while former Blues players Christian Burgess and Ben Close have donated shirts and boots. Moneys first team boss Glenn Turnbull said: ‘We’ve been blown away by the support. ‘I’m not really surprised, it’s what the football community does. Everyone is friends off the park. That’s the good thing about being in a football club - people will come together as a group when you need them. We must have had over 100 messages of goodwill and people asking if there’s anything they can do. Ninety nine per cent of the time you’ll never need to ask, but it’s good to know the support is there if we do.”

ALSO... Ben Hatch has stepped down as 1st team manager of Christchurch.

The Crowdfunding page was set up earlier today and has already raised over £1,100.

He has been replaced by ex manager Graham Kemp, who has teken over on a temporary basis.

Moneyfields’ Wessex League rivals Baffins Milton Rovers have donated £100, while AFC Stoneham and Andover New Street have also donated. Portsmouth Sunday League club The Meon have also given £100.

The club have invited experienced applicants to contact their club secretary.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 FOOTBALL BOOTS.... 10 ADIDAS F50 (2004)

The first thing you'll notice about this boot is exactly what made it revolutionary: It has no laces. It actually does, but they are under the upper of the boot. Eventually everybody would find out that covering the laces isn't that good at all, but in 2004 for a boot to conceal its laces was absolutely revolutionary stuff. Its apparently primordial features wouldn't be groundbreaking at all, but the ones underneath the hood would eventually lead to perhaps the most ground-breaking boot today, which will be featured later on this list.

8 NIKE AIR ZOOM TOTAL 90 ii (2002)

Nike's first pure power boot, it featured a whole ad campaign that in itself was quite historic. The design and its name are meant to give a player comfort the whole 90 minutes without losing power or accuracy, and the off-centre lacing was completely revolutionary at that point in time. The inclusion of air in the sole, although short-lived, was also remarkable in its own right.

7

MIZUNO WAVE CUP

(197)

Getting a world-class player like Rivaldo to put on an unknown brand like Mizuno is a hard task, but once the Japanese brand did that the Wave won its place on this list. The most revolutionary aspect of this boot was the configuration of its studs. The "major" brands went on to copy them, while Mizuno continues to use a very similar arrangement to this day in the boots that Japanese allstar Keisuke Honda famously wears.

9

PUMA V1.06 (2006)

It might look a lot like a normal boot today, but the weight and look for 2006 was completely unusual and revolutionary. In fact, it was the lightest boot ever made when it debuted at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In a time where power boots were in vogue, the Puma V1.06 transformed the market and eventually made every other major brand shift to where they are today: creating lighter, faster boots.

6

NIKE MERCURIAL SL

(2008)

The grandchild of a boot you will see later on this list, this boot featured the addition of carbon fibre technology, and it was (for a little while) the lightest boot ever made. At first it was advertised as a conceptual boot, with its eventual evolution in the market to the flywire clad Superfly we've all grown accustomed to see on CR7's feet. It was the first boot to introduce a carbon fibre sole-plate, and it started the race to make the world's lightest boot that every brand in the world is still competing for.

38

5

ADIDAS COPA MUNDIAL (1979)

The best-selling boot of all time, the Copa Mundial is still being sold today on sporting stores worldwide. Made of kangaroo leather, the Copa Mundial was the lightest boots ever made and were made to exploit speed and versatility. In that regard it is considered the first "modern" boot, and would be years ahead of its competition and still competes favourably in the market today.

4

3

NIKE AIR MERCURIAL

(1998)

Specifically engineered for Ronaldo, the Air Mercurial were the world's best boots on the best player in the world's feet. These bootss changed the boot industry forever towards a speed and lightweight market that wasn't important to anybody before their release and that is the dominant one today. They were also Nike's first incursion into the synthetic material for uppers. In other words, rds, just as R9 revolutionized football, the Air Mercurial revolutionized football boots as we know them and are a big legacy of what we see today on the pitch.

ADIDAS F50 ADIZERO

(2010)

This version of the boot finally threw away all the bells and whistles the F50 line had for years and went for the most vital thing in football today: speed. With a lightweight upper and a ground-breaking sole-plate, players are flocking towards this boot because simply put: It's the most revolutionary boot in quite some time. The newest version, adiZero Prime, made this boot even better, and it seems to have a good hold on the speed boot market.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

2

PUMA KING (1970)

Like Pelé, they're definitely not called the King for nothing. They were O Rei's boot of choice as he won World Cups with Brazil, and as such they instantly have a place in history. Especially if they also fuelled the adidasPuma rivalry. This was also the boot that started boot sponsorship deals. But more than the history itself this boot was one that introduced the concepts of weight (they were lighter than ever before) and design to the football boot world, introducing colored boots (all white) for the first time.

@AndoverNSfc

39

1 ADIDAS PREDATOR (1994)

The boot that defines modern football is the Predator. It's as simple as that. It's also the top selling boot worldwide today. The idea behind this boot was to increase power and spin by adding fins to the boot, an idea featured in almost every single boot on the market today. It also featured the red details and the three white stripes that we see on every Predator from 1994 to this day and that features on almost every match you see. If all the other boots in this list have made strides to evolve football, the Predator has to be the highest point in evolution a football boot has achieved. For now, at least.

Travellers’ EDITOR KEVIN PIPKIN TELLS HIS STORY OF THE STREET’S FA VASE GAME AT CRIBBS FC...

TALES

CRIBBS FC ● SATURDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2021 THE JOURNEY After some short journeys it was back on the long haul for the game at Cribbs. I arrived at the ground at 9am in order to get everything prepared and ready. Boxes packed, kit bagged up and paperwork printed it was time to get the coach loaded up and be on our way. The coach sets off just after 10:30 and we make steady progress up A34 but just before we reach our turn off to the M3, there is tailbacks due to everyone wanting the M3 today. Is everyone travelling to Cribbs? After about a 10 minute delay we are on the M3 and ahead of schedule so a stop off at the services is welcomed to stretch the legs and get a drink. Back on the coach and we turn off the M3 just before further traffic congestion and we arrive at Cribbs ground with plenty of time. While the players take in the clubhouse and the pitch, myself and my helper Les are shifting all the equipment into the dressing room and getting the kit and equipment all prepared and setup.

46

THE GROUND Cribbs ground looks very nice and in great condition, with perimeter fencing all around and a couple of seating stands behind and next to the dugouts. Outside the gate for the pitch is the clubhouse, which is very nice and welcoming. Also next to the clubhouse are some 4G pitches and some additional training pitches , which are used for the teams to warm-up warm next to. THE FOOD There was a tea hut outside the perimeter fencing and was mainly serving hot drinks but I was informed they were selling hotdogs as well as crisps and chocolate at the usual prices. pric THE PROGRAMME The programme was slightly disappointing considering Cribbs are a division higher in the Hellenic League,, I expected something more exciting. The programme itself had a welcome to the game and also gave a match report from Cribb’s ’s top of the table clash in mid-week, mid but someone should have told him that they were playing us and not Ringwood Town.

There was also the usual features from a standard programme at our level. club histories, lots of pages highlighting sponsorship opportunities and results and league tables from the Hellenic League Premier as well as the match-day squad list. THE GAME Cribbs started the game on the front foot and were able to win a number of corners in quick succession, which we were able to defend well against. We then started to build and created a couple of gilt edged chances that Shane Lock perhaps should have converted. The second half starts and Cookie drags an opportunity wide, but then half way through the second half, Lockey plays a reverse ball into Cookie and he’s through and although the keeper gets a touch the ball enters the net – pandemonium scenes behind the goal! Four minutes later and Lockey turns his man and hits an effort from 20 yards straight into the bottom corner. The cheers from behind the goal get even louder! Mikey Davis comes on and so nearly makes it 3-0 but is denied by the keeper then in injurytime, Cribbs pull one back. The Street hold out for the few minutes remaining before the real celebrations begin. SUMMARY An amazing day and journey home full of high spirits for the next round. As I’m packing away some of the Cribbs backroom staff offers their congratulations. In truth the better side won and if we can keep performing like that then we could go far in this competition with a little bit of luck!

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

The journey home seems shorter than the journey going as the club supply the beers to celebrate a job well done and most of the squad are in the Street clubhouse when we get back to continue the celebrations. Man of the Match has to be AP, as he was everywhere at the back winning headers and defending well.

ONLY IN NON-LEAGUE LEAGUE

By Sam Elliott

There’s a little phrase we like to use here at NLP Towers; “only in non-league”. As soon as those words are uttered, I pretty much know we’ve got our page three in the can for another week! It often feels like the good people that inhabit the grass-roots game like to make our storyfinders lives a lot easier by doing something barking mad. So, as a tribute to those helpful souls that help make our paper what it is, here’s a selection of off-the-wall managerial funnies or unfortunates that have found their way on our pages over the last few years. THE ONE THAT WOULDN’T GO AWAY We’ve all know a manager who’ll tell anyone that’ll listen how angry he is to be dismissed. Meet the man that refused to accept his sacking! Barry Town were a club in crisis. Boss Gavin Chesterfield was on a hiding to nothing but when he was told he had to leave by unpopular chairman Stuart Lovering, he simply said no – taking training as if nothing had happened and telling the chairman he would be in the dugout the following Saturday, regardless of what he thought. The pair sat down on the Friday night and he was err, reinstated. Now why didn’t Di Matteo/AVB/Carlo Ancelotti/Avram Grant/The Special One think of that! SACKED FOR BEING TOO SUCCESSFUL Once Steve King was enjoying the limelight as his Macclesfield side beat Cardiff in the FA Cup, you wouldn’t feel the need for any sympathy towards him. But not long ago he was out of work for doing too well. King had taken tiny Lewes from Ryman South into the Conference Premier in 6 glory-filled seasons. Apparently they’d come too far too soon, and the

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

decision was made to cut right back – his contract was not renewed and all-but all one of the club’ss title winning players were told to leave. “II would still have a job if we hadn’t hadn gone up,” King said at the time. “II have essentially been sacked for being too successful.” successful. “However, in terms of how we undertake the role we have different traits that we can bounce off each other. It’s all about open communication. We’re not going to agree on everything but that’s great as well.” I KNEW THE GAME WAS UP – AT HALF-TIME Sometimes you just get the feeling your time at a club is coming to an end. But a text message from a friend at half-time half of an important league match is perhaps not the best way to find out. Jon Newby’ss Colwyn Bay weren’t weren having the best of seasons in the Blue Square Bet North. Newby said; “It It was handled very poorly, I actually found out I was going to be sacked at half-time time during the Vauxhall game after receiving a text from somebody who had heard about the new manager phoning round the players. There was somebody else doing my job while hile I was still in it! There’s There no excuse for that.” BUT AT LEAST HE WASN’’T OFFICIALLY GIVEN THE BULLET DURING A GAME! Few stories will ever beat the tale of Mark Poulton – fired during a game his board of directors forgot was happening! Sussex County unty League Chichester City were in action against Redhill in the Sussex Cup when manager Poulton heard his phone ringing in his pocket. When a director’ss name came up, he knew he had to take the call. It was one he wished he’d d left to go to voicemail. “It’s the most unprofessional and shambolic shamboli organisation I’ve ever been involved with,”” he fumed.

league look In Division One the leaders, Bemerton Heath, lost for the second time in five days, this time to a single Tyrrell Sampson goal at New Milton. Newport took advantage with a comfortable 3-0 victory on their first ever visit to Ash United with two goals from Joe Craig and one from Connor Kelly, a result that leaves Ash firmly in the bottom three. Follands were held to a one all draw at Hamble by Laverstock & Ford – Will Gange and Peter Fletcher the scorers – while it was also honours even at Potterne Park where Verwood and Andover Town finished with two goals apiece with Matt Vining, Ollie Davis, Michael Owen and David Jerrard on the scoresheet. Shared points at Charlton as well where Andover New Street twice came from behind against Millbrook before going ahead only for a late penalty to level the scores. Ross Cook, Shane Lock and Reece Rusher for Street and Perry Harding, Mark Barker and the penalty from Ben Baddams for Millbrook.

Downton travelled across the Solent and defeated East Cowes Vics by five goals to one – two from Sam Howe plus singles from Cameron Butler, Danny Clarke and Shaun Prentice too much for the consolation from Liam Newbold – while a single second half goal from Charlie Oakwell-Boulton gave Petersfield the points against Whitchurch at Love Lane. On Friday evening a three-figure crowd saw Fawley lead 1-0 at half time at Totton & Eling before three goals after the break made the final score two all. On the scoresheet were Yusupha Badjie and Alex Sawyer for the Millers and Dylan Knight (2) for the Oilers. Lastly back to Saturday and if anyone tells Ringwood that football is a funny old game, they may find some heads nodding in agreement. On Tuesday Ringwood beat leaders Bemerton by the odd goal in nine – four days later they lose 3-1 at home to bottom Club Fleet Spurs, providing the North Hampshire Club with their first League win of the season. Tom White with two and Ryan Goddard with one were the Fleet marksmen with Joe Petty getting a late consolation for Ringwood. At the end of the above Bemerton, Newport and Follands are on level points heading Division One. But the day belongs to Fleet Spurs. They have had many obstacles to overcome, suffered some heavy defeats but have gradually been pulling things round culminating in today’s victory. Hopefully they enjoyed their evening.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN Given the nation is in the grip of Old Etonian dominance (two or our most recent Prime Ministers were members of the infamous Bullingdon Club), it is worth recalling in this 150th year of the FA Cup, that the competition threatened to become the jealously-guarded property of the privileged classes. The Downton Abbey-esque English Game, a drama written by Julian Fellowes, gave a somewhat tame and polished view of the early days of the FA Cup. It highlighted the prejudice of the south towards the north – in one scene, a member of the Old Etonians, working for a bank, was asked to go to Lancashire. The look of fear on his face highlighted how people once viewed northern England with great suspicion. At the time, though, the north dealt in reverse snobbery, regarding the well-heeled, welleducated and well-fed southerners as pampered folk leading far easier and safer lives. The English Game could not resist a few cliches that underlined that the sport was rapidly becoming the pastime of the sweaty, horny-handed sons of the soil. I experienced this prejudice when I started my career in the mid-1970s, the public school fraternity at my workplace referring to me as “Comp” because I had come from an Essex comprehensive school. The Old Etonians were one of a number of teams from the Old Boy network who championed the game and made their mark in the early years of the FA Cup. Their first appearance in the competition was in 1874-75 when they reached the final but lost to the

54

Royal Engineers after a replay. The following season, they were beaten finalists again, this time losing to the Wanderers. The early star of the FA Cup was Alfred Alf Lord Kinnaird, who played in nine finals, winning five with firstly the Wanderers (1873, 1877 and 1878) and then the Old Etonians (1879 and 1882). Kinnaird’s lifetime achievements marks him as a man very much of his time, as well as a prominent figure in the development of football, he was also president of the YMCA, a director of Barclays Bank and Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was president of the Football Association between 1890 and 1923 and when he studied ied at Cambridge University, he was a tennis blue and a champion swimmer. As a footballer, Kinnaird was reputed to be the toughest of all tacklers and was not shy in using strong-arm arm techniques against his opponents. He was, nevertheless, capped by Scotland. In 1881, the Old Carthusians became the second OB team to win the competition, beating ting the Etonians in the final by 3-0. The day of the gifted amateur was coming to a close.. The turning point came on March 31, 1883 at the Oval. Blackburn Olympic, a team founded in 1878, beat the Etonians 3-0 3 to become the first team from the north to win the competition, ending the dominance of southern clubs. The old boys never went close again. Blackburn had professionals in their line-up, up, which was not to the Etonians liking. This was a seismic moment in the history of the game and prompted calls for the Football Association to investigate the finances of the northern clubs. Success, it would seem, has always been bought!
