ANDOVER NEW STREET v EAST COWES VICTORIA SATURDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2021 KICK-OFF 2PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park after 3 away matches, 2 of which were midweek trips down to Moneyfields and Cowes sports in Hampshire Senior and Wessex League Cup ties. A warm welcome, especially to the visiting East Cowes supporters, who have made the trip across from the Isle of Wight today. We hope you enjoy your brief stay with us and have a safe journey home. It’s been a long couple of weeks with some miles covered during that period. Our trip to New Milton was especially pleasing with an excellent performance to ensure the 3 points and also close the gap on some of the teams above us. As usual we’ve got plenty inside this issue of Word on the Street, including the manager’s thoughts of Jamie Coleman plus news and views around Foxcotte Park, including Ross Cook’s thoughts following his man of the match performances at New Milton and Cowes Sports. Enjoy the game and your reading and we’ll see you again in two weeks’ time when Petersfield Town are the visitors! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park as we host East Cowes Victoria I’d like to extend a warm welcome to manager Ritchie Woodburn, his staff and players plus the committee and fans, who have made the long journey from the island. After experiencing that particular journey on Tuesday and not getting home until after 1pm, I hope your return journey is a safe one and that you get home at a reasonable time later on this evening. After the two long trips we have had to New Milton and Cowes this week, I’d like to express how happy I am with the whole squad for their attitude, commitment and effort they apply to each game and the intensity that we play at. They are all listening to the instructions that myself, John and the back room staff are giving them and implementing it onto the pitch and reaping the rewards.

Fantastic The back four have been solid and reliable, with Lee Morris adapting to this level really well. He has come into the side and been solid. We have been really happy with his performances and he has cemented his place in the side. Also a special mention to Shane Lock, who has moved into a more central role in midfield and has really set the standard with his energetic performances and he is constantly shutting people down and dictating how we play and been fantastic in there and he captained the side really well on Tuesday night in Scotty’s absence.

Ross Cook has also come into the team and has immediately settled into the side and his creativity has been something we have lacked in the past. He has also formed a quick partnership with Luke Hooper, who is back to his best after a quiet pre-season by his standards. Luke is a constant threat and his finishing has been first class. Cameron Thatcher is playing above his years – being only 17, but he is showing great football maturity. I have no doubt that the boy has a fantastic future. We know it’s still early days into the season but we are building something special here and the atmosphere in the dressing room is really good and everyone is fighting for each other. Saturday’s win at New Milton was massive, which we carried into the League Cup tie away at Cowes, where we gave our best performance so far in a 4-3 win, despite playing with 10 men for over an hour. The lads showed loads of character that evening and I know the whole squad was buzzing after that result and performance. Finally a massive thank you to those supporters that made the games at New Milton and Cowes, I know the lads appreciate the support and celebrated with those that made the trip on Tuesday night at the final whistle Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome back to Foxcotte Park for League 1 match with East Cowes. I’d very much like to welcome all the players, club officials and supporters of East Cowes here this afternoon. No doubt they’ll be smarting after losing 5-0 on Bank Holiday Monday to neighbours Newport IOW Can I also say a massive thank you to Darren Dyer for his help on Tuesday evening. “Daz” very kindly picked up myself and the players and drove us to the Westwood Park and also dropped us back after the game. He didn’t even watch what turned out to be a great win for us at Cowes Sports, but we really appreciated his help and hopefully he has been able to get to watch this game this afternoon.

6

Tuesday night’s performance was especially pleasing after we grounded out the result with 10 men for over an hour after Adam Pearson was sent-off, against a higher league opponent, in front of a vocal support as well. The most important thing for me was the way we came back from the disappointment of losing the 2 goal lead right after half-time. Many teams would have folded after that but the lads went about their business and each player worked their socks off to get back in front. This also came off the back of another good result last Saturday away at New Milton. We played much the better football in the first half and although New Milton created a few chances in the second half I thought we grinded out the result well and managed the game towards the end. Our Swifts side start their league campaign off today with an away fixture at South Wonston and I wish Robbie, Andy and Stephen the very best for the season. They have had to wait a little longer for their season to finally get started with the new league structure in the Hampshire Division 1 being split into two separate leagues.

I’d also like to wish Kyla Tobin and her ladies side the best of luck as well this coming season. Finally their fixtures have been released this week for the first month and they start with a hard game at home a week on Sunday (12th of September) against Cowes Sports. Please come on down and support the girls as they look to build upon their great start to last season. We also have a comedy night here at the club on September the 25th with three comedians and also a Ploughman’s supper. The doors open at 7pm and tickets cost £10 for members, £12 for non-members and £15 on the night. Tickets are selling fast for this popular event so please contact Paul Reidy on preidy1@live.co.uk for more details and to buy your tickets.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

The only disappointment What a great week on Saturday was conceding a “WE HAVE EVERY we have had recently goal. We can’t afford to with a third league RIGHT TO GO INTO switch off in games, victory away at New especially when we think the job’s done. It’s not good THIS GAME WITH Milton Town, who were enough and it is very unlike unbeaten until then us. We haven’t conceded THE CONFIDENCE and this was followed many goals this season but up with an impressive the one on Saturday Saturda was OF EARNING frustrating. We’ll use it as League Cup victory at another thing to learn from ANOTHER WIN” Cowes Sports on and hard work on the training Tuesday night, both ground will rectify that. results were down to a lot of hard The most encouraging thing is that we have a work. It was also down to the goalscoring exploits of Cookie, who followed up his goal and assist on Saturday with a tremendous hat-trick and another assist against Cowes on Tuesday. We were all absolutely delighted for him, we know how much of a good player he is and it’s great to see him earning the plaudits. The gaffer’s and us, his team-mates, have always believed in his ability. Tuesday’s performance underlined his importance to us – well done Cookie.

Stronger In both matches we started well and got onto the front foot early, which is exactly what we want to do. We came on strong and, as has been the case, we got stronger as the game went on. Cookie got a chance one on one with his marker and made no mistake with his effort to get the ball rolling and we never looked back. www.ansfc.co.uk

number of players not even on the bench, that are sitting in the stands, that could easily walk into any other team in League 1. The gaffer’s are going to have one big selection headache when everyone is fitt and available. What a great position to be in. It means those in the starting XI have to work doubly hard to keep their place in the team. We can take masses of positives from the run that we’re on and while there are no easy games in this league we e have the right to go into this game with every confidence of earning another win. Thank you for your support last Saturday and on Tuesday – please get behind us again today and enjoy the game.

let's go THE STREET ARE BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT SATURDAY WHEN WE MAKE THE SHORT TRIP TO AMESBURY FOR THE 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND OF THE FA. VASE...

AMESBURY TOWN

WHO? The club was established in

1904 as Amesbury Football Club. They joined the Salisbury & District Junior League, before becoming members of the Salisbury & District League in 1906. After winning the league in 1955–56, they became members of Division One of the Wiltshire League. However, after finishing third in Division One in 1958–59, the club left the division. They returned to Division One in 1972–73; despite finishing bottom of the table, they were not relegated. The following season saw them finish second-frombottom of the division, but in 1974–75 they were league champions. They were runners-up the following season and were placed in Senior Division One in 1976 after the league merged with the Wiltshire Combination to form the Wiltshire County League. Amesbury began entering the FA Vase in 1978– 79 and were Division One runners-up. The following season saw them win the league and reach the third round of the Vase. In 1983–84 they won the Wiltshire Senior Cup for the first time. The club were renamed Amesbury Town in 1984 and after finishing second in 1989–90, they were champions in 1990–91. They retained the league title in 1991–92 and after finishing as runners-up in 1993–94 also winning the Wiltshire Senior Cup, the club moved up to Division One of the Western League. However, after finishing bottom of Division One in 1996–97 they left to rejoin the Salisbury &

10

District League. After finishing as runners-up runners in the Salisbury & District League Premier Division in 1997–98, 98, Amesbury joined Division Three of the Hampshire League. A fourth-place fourth finish in their first season in the league was enough to earn promotion to the Premier Division amidst league reorganisation. In 2004 the league merged into the Wessex League, with the club becoming members of Division Two, which was renamed rename Division One in 2006.

HOW THEY DOING? Following their

promotion to the Wessex Premier in 2019, they have struggled in the higher division but have been saved from any relegation fears with 2 abandoned seasons due to Covid. This current season has again see them struggle with a couple of heavy defeats against Shaftesbury (9(9 2) and most recently Horndean (5-1) (5 but they have picked up three points with a home ho victory over Christchurch, which see’s them in 17th place.

HOW TO GET THERE? THERE From Andover,

Amesbury is 15 miles and around 21 minutes away,, from the A303 take the A345 A34 Countess Road. Then take the 2nd exit at the roundabout continuing along the A345 Salisbury S Road. At the next roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Salisbury Street, follow along this road and as it turns left it becomes Church Street. The ground will be on the left hand side.

welcome EAST COWES VICTORIA

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with East Cowes Victoria Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Vic’s make their first visit to our corner of Hampshire since a 5-2 defeat in September 2019 and will be aiming to pick up three points here for the first time since September 2012. The Vics triumphed 5-3 that afternoon. The Isle of Wight side arrive at Foxcotte this afternoon looking to get their campaign started after a 5-0 home defeat to neighbours Newport IOW on Bank Holiday Monday. Vic’s manager Rich Woodburn has assembled a mix of youth and experience and will be hoping to continue the improving recent season finishing’s of 20th in 2016/17, 16th in 2017/18 and then 10th in 2018/19. The Vic’s didn’t get their current campaign off to the best of starts with 2-0 defeat at home to league newcomers Infinity. They then went on a 4 game unbeaten run. Starting with an 8 goal thriller at Fawley, with current club top scorer Jimmi Burton getting a hat-trick and Toby Snow also scoring to ensure the first point of the season.

12

This was followed up with a 1-1 1 home draw with Ringwood Town. Again Burton was on target for the Vic’s. A 4-3 penalty shootout over Fawley following a 1-1 1 draw in 90 minutes with Burton again on target for East Cowes and Declan Hartigan scoring for the Oilers. Last Saturday the Vic’’s hit five past Fleet Spurs, with five different scorers; scorers a Ryan Gregory penalty after 2 minutes got the Vics off to a perfect start and after hitting the bar twice, the Vics doubled their lead through a Harrison Catania header. Toby Snow made it 3-0 before a simple tap in for Jimmi Burton made mad it 4-0 and Harrison Yates rounded off the scoring late on. Finally on Monday afternoon they entertained Newport IOW in front of a crowd of 292. 292 The Port went into a 1-0 lead through a Connor Kelly penalty after he was brought down in the box. He then turned urned supplier 3 minutes later for Jacob Reynolds to score the second. Kelly assisted the third goal for Newport with his cross being poked home by Joe Butcher. Liam Harper headed home the fourth and Kelly got his second with a well taken lob. East Cowes owes are awaiting a league decision on their game against Andover Town early last month, which was abandoned in the 96th 96 minute when an Andover player collapsed.

FROM THE

AWAY END

Darren Dyer is a club stalwart and also washes the kit, amongst other things. He was also the club secretary for 16 years and has been following the club since the age of 4 as his family have been involved with the club for over 60 years... ► THE SEASON AHEAD WORD ON THE STREET: What are your expectations for East Cowes this season? DARREN: We have a young side, who whilst have a great deal of talent also need to learn the realities of Wessex football so hopefully a mid table finish. Oh and we would love to win the Isle of Wight Senior Cup! WOTS: Which of the new signings for East Cowes is the pick of the bunch in your opinion and why? DARREN: Three young lads who pitched up at pre-season. Kade Woodford, Toby Snow and Charlie Marsek. All 16 years of age but so much talent. WOTS: What do you think of manager Richie Woodburn? Is he doing a good job? DARREN: Woody does a great job. It’s hard in this league for the island clubs, as essentially we are all chasing the same players. Unfortunately the laid back island attitude extends to some lads outlook on football as there are many lads who could play Wessex football but just want to play island league with their mates. That and the fact we don’t pay any money also makes Woody’s job harder. WOTS: Which one of the players who have left the club this summer were you most disappointed to lose?

14

DARREN: Never disappointed to lose a player. If they don’t want to be at the club then go. WOTS: Who do you most want to beat this season? DARREN: Newport IOW FC

► SEASONS PAST... WOTS: Tell us about you. Why do you support East Cowes? When did it all start? What was your first game? What do you remember about it? DARREN: As I said earlier I’ve been involved all my life. I used to go with my late Uncle Alan when he was playing to all the away games. I really can’t remember the first game I went to and I dread to think how many I’ve actually watched. Must be thousands!!! WOTS: Who’s your favourite East Cowes player of all time? And why? DARREN: My uncle Alan Reed. He was my hero growing up and he took me everywhere with him. Al played over 500 games for the Vic’s and was manager of the club when he was tragically killed in a road accident. I miss him so much and hopefully he would be proud of the club now as we try our best to move it forward. WOTS: Which is your favourite season following Infinity? And why? DARREN: Every season brings new optimism so hopefully this season!! WOTS: If you could invite five former East Cowes players and managers to a dinner party, who would they be? DARREN: Al Reed, John Hazel, Graham Daish, Neil Berridge and John Beard.

STREET 5-0 FLEET SPURS HOOPER 12, 25, 66, THOMPSON 44, LOCK 55

WHAT’S THE STORY? Luke Hooper scored a hat-trick as the Street was dominant against a struggling Fleet Spurs side that is still looking for its first point of the season. Street’s first attack saw Ross Cook clip the top of the bar before the opening goal came on 12 minutes. The ball was worked down the left flank, turned inside and Luke Hooper fired across the goalkeeper in to the far corner. From then it was largely one way traffic and New Street doubled their advantage on 25 minutes, Morris found Lock moving down the inside left channel and a square pass enabled Hooper to show his finishing prowess again. The Street went further ahead just before halftime, when a corner from the right caused confusion in the area and Lloyd Thompson fired home. The second half saw a tremendous run by Lee Morris led to goal number four. The young full back chased and controlled a through ball and was denied his first senior goal by Fleet keeper Coleman’s outstretched hand before watching Shane Lock roll the loose ball into the net. Twenty minutes on the clock and it was a nap hand for Street and a disaster for the young Spurs keeper, A cross from the right was well within his reach but under no pressure he dropped the ball and Hooper gratefully completed his hat trick and seal the three points. www.ansfc.co.uk

MONEYFIELDS 2-0 STREET BURROUGHS 21, BAILEY 80

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street was knocked out of the Hampshire Cup with a disappointing 2-0 2 defeat at Moneyfields last week. The Portsmouth side advanced to the next round for a home tie with Lymington Town thanks to a goal in each half. Moneyfields took the lead in the 19th minute. They broke down the left and when the ball was squared across Danny Burroughs was there to put the home team in front. Good play by Harry Lawton that could have come to something. He sent over a great cross cros but although the home keeper fumbled he quickly recovered. Street were holding our own but still trailed at the break. The Street had plenty still to play for but had not really created many chances in the first half. However after the interval they started well. Harry Lawton had a shot at goal but it was just too high and then the same player had another effort that ended up in the side netting! ting! Substitute Cam Thatcher came on for Harry Lawton. With 15 minutes to go a chance was created for Street but Luke Hooper’s volley was just wide with the keeper scrambling across his goal. Moneyfields finally sealed things with another cross from the left that was converted by Josh Bailey. www.ansfc.co.uk

NEW MILTON TOWN 1-3 STREET LONG 65

COOK 4, THOMPSON 23, HOOPER 53

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street made it back to back league wins with an excellent away performance at previously unbeaten New Milton last Saturday. The game was only 4 minutes old when Luke Hooper played the ball in for Ross Cook to beat the keeper to give the Street an early lead. The Street doubled their advantage on 23 minutes when Lloyd Thompson intercepted a clearance from the New Milton defence and promptly advanced before finding the corner of the net. In the second half, New Milton pressed further forward and created a couple of chances but the Street produced an excellent counter-attack on 53 minutes with Shane Lock threading a pass into Cook on the right wing. Cook then squared the ball into Hooper’s path and he finished low past the keeper to give the Street a 3-0 lead. New Milton did pull a goal back on 65 minutes when from a deep free kick, Sean O’Brien was beaten to the ball by Christopher Long, who headed into the far corner, but the Street managed the game after that towww.ansfc.co.uk ensure the three points. facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

COOK’S PERFECT WEEK The Street got off to the perfect start last Saturday after Ross Cook was put through one-on-one with his marker and he didn’t hesitate to dispatch his shot past the New Milton keeper to give the Street a 4th minute lead. It was Cook’s third goal of the season, which started off his man-of-the-match performance. The striker reflected on the game. “It doesn’t get much better really,” Cook said. “We knew we needed to get a good start and when the ball was put through to me I knew that I was going to hit the target.” The striker was also provider for Street’s third goal when after breaking free on the right side, he had the presence of mind to square the ball for strike partner Luke Hooper to score his eighth goal of the season. “When you come into a new club, all you can think about is contributing to the team,” Cook added. “The third goal more or less killed the game for me. It’s a great goal and a brilliant move. The ball from Lockey was perfect and I knew Hoops would be making the run in support and it’s a cool finish from Hoops.” The striker believes there is still more to come and that he will continue to create and keep finding the back of the net when the chances come his way. “I always go into a game thinking I will score,” the striker told Word on the Street. “I always think I will get a couple of goals. Lately they have been going in for me and the team have been getting results. The main thing is picking up results and if I can get a few goals on the way that’s fine by me. I’ve got faith in my own ability and with the chances the lads around me create I am more than capable of putting them away.”

The former Wallingford and Thatcham man played for Overton United in a pre-season pre friendly against the Street this summer and was one of the stand out players that evening, even though he was playing as centre-half. half. But has proven his worth already up front for the Street, with his ability to bring others into play and his experience of playing at a higher level, Cook has also formed a connection with strike partner Luke Hooper. Cook then put in another man-of-the-match man performance against Cowes Sports on Tuesday evening. He hit a hat-trick trick in fine style with a great header from a Reece Rusher deep cross, then he turned provider with a flick pass, perfectly weighted into Shane Lock’s path for him to score. In the second half he lead the line superbly with the Street down to 10 men, he latched onto a flick on from Rusher to score from a tight angle and then 5 minutes later he was put through and finished on the half volley to ensure the Street progressed into the next round of the League Cup.

PHILIPS 46, NASH 57, THOMPSON (OG) 74

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street progressed through to the 3rd round of the Wessex League Cup on Tuesday evening with a superb performance against Wessex Premier Cowes Sports. A midweek trip to the Isle of Wight is never easy but the Street were fast out of the blocks and could have taken the lead as early as the first minute when Robbie Owen warmed Cowes Keeper Hatt’s gloves. The Street did take the lead in the 10th minute when Ross Cook headed home when he was un marked at the back post. Cook provided Shane Lock with an opportunity after 25 minutes and the midfielder finished well to make it 2-0. A nasty clash of heads between Lloyd Thompson and Lock with the referee playing on despite angry calls for the game to be stopped, finally ended with a free-kick for Cowes and after the Street players demanding to know why the game was not stopped, a red card was then produced to Adam Pearson. Cowes responded quickly after half time to get back on level terms with two quick goals, but the Street kept creating chances and got back in front thanks to another excellent finish from Cook. The lead was extended four minutes later when Reece Rusher won the ball and fed Cook, who completed his hattrick with a neat finish to silence the noisy home support. Cowes made it 4-3, when the unfortunate Lloyd Thompson deflected the ball into net from a Lee Morris clearance but the Street held on for a memorable victory on the facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet island. www.ansfc.co.uk

The victorious New Street side of 1993 after winning the North Hants Senior Cup against Stockbridge. Street went into a 2-0 0 lead in the opening five minutes thanks to a volley from Sean Rogers and the second the result of a goalmouth scramble converted by Chris Sutton. Stockbridge scored early in the second half but Sutton soon afterwards added to his tally t to make it 3-1. 1. Stockbridge grabbed a second goal 15 minutes from time thanks to midfielder Paul Appleton, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Street from claiming more silverware. East Cowes continued to show some fight and netted their second of the match through their top scorer Jordan Browne.

Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by heavy defeats at Romsey and Christchurch. By the end of September the Street were just 1 point off top spot and were in 5th place. East Cowes were the next visitors and were second from bottom in 18th position with just 2 points out of 6 games.

Yates netted his second of the game on 84 minutes and four minutes later substitute Nic Turpin put in number six to complete the scoring. The victory would keep the Street in 5th place and how little did we know that they would go on to achieve promotion promot to the Wessex Premier for the first time in the club’s history.

The home side took just fifteen minutes to take the lead as Lock netted the opener. East Cowes however then came back into the game and equalised before half time after missing several clear chances.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 ECCENTRIC FOOTBALLERS EVER....

10 JOSE LUIS CHILAVERT

They say all goalkeepers are mad. And this one certainly lives up to this view. Not only did he manage to score an incredible 27 goals for his country Paraguay and countless more for his clubs, he also stole the cap off a ball boy and threatened to beat-up a photographer by the pitch for taking too long to throw the ball back. The sight of him sprinting back to goal after an unsuccessful free-kick fully deserves the title eccentric.

9

PAUL GASCIOGNE

No list of eccentrics, footballers or otherwise would be complete without a mention of Gazza. His close relationship with Vinnie Jones and extraordinary celebration after scoring against Scotland in Euro ’96 epitomised his unique character.

36

8

GEORGE BEST

7

STUART PEARCE

6

ERIC CANTONA

Whether or not he was truly eccentric, his actions off the pitch were at best memorable. Of particular note was his legendary popularity with women and his constant enjoyment of going out when meant to be training or even a match. Although by today’s standards he may seem tame, in his day Best was a bit special in many ways.

Anyone whose nickname is ‘psycho’ surely deserves a place in this list. Pearce’s toughtackling and thunderous free-kicks were not his only notable features with his shouting and extraordinary celebrations during his playing career and also evident on the touchline as a manager.

Cantona was one of those players that for 99% of the time was sheer brilliance and for the rest of it was a bit barmy. Whilst some remember his FA. Cup Final goal and his sublime skill, he will largely be known for his karate kick on a Crystal Palace supporter and numerous stamps on opposition players.

5

BRUCE GROBBELAAR

Bungs and match fixing aside, Grobbelaar truly was an eccentric footballer. For all his brilliance, he could be seen sprinting half the length of the pitch to berate his players, and wobbling his legs to put off opposition players. His amazing ponytail whilst playing for Southampton only serves to emphasise his position as eccentric.

4

FRANCIS LEE

The Manchester City legend was seen as a completely eccentric in his day as he was the first to use a simulated fall (dive) to win penalties. As well as this he had several memorable on-the-pitch fights with opponents and team-mates alike – truly unique.

3

SOCRATES

2

FABIAN BARTHEZ

This man would have avoided this list if only he hadn’t joined the British non-league non side Garforth Town after his glittering career with Brazil, sparking Pele to name him as ‘one of the best ever’. Whether this was a shrewd transfer or not is unclear, but certainly a little eccentric.

Another goalkeeper! For all of his brilliance, Barthez has had moments of deep eccentricity in his career, such as trying (and failing) to take on an opposition striker when keeping goal for Manchester United and also requiring a kiss on the head from Laurent Blanc before every international game for his native France. Mad.

1 VINNIE JONES Jones was central to the resurgence of Wimbledon during the era of the ‘Crazy Gang’ during the 1990’s and his behaviour certainly lives up to the title. He once got a booking after five seconds and was one of the original Premiership hard men getting sent off twelve times in his career.

Travellers’ EDITOR KEVIN PIPKIN CONTINUES TO WRITE ABOUT FOLLOWING THE STREET ON THEIR TRAVELS THIS SEASON. THIS WEEK WE LOOK BACK ON THE LONG TRIP TO NEW MILTON...

TALES

NEW MILTON TOWN ● SATURDAY 28th th AUGUST 2021 THE JOURNEY It’s an early start for one of our longest trips of the season, not only do we have the Bank Holiday traffic to contend with but we also have a festival in the local area resulting in an earlier kick-off time of Noon. I’m at Foxcotte Park nice and early to get the team sheets printed off, there isn’t much else I can do as John has the kit and Jamie has all the warm-up equipment. The management and backroom staff arrive at 8:30 and before we set off the shirts are put onto coat hangers. The new light blue

goalkeeper’s shirt has had a modification after the number 1 on the back was put on back to front and wasn’t noticed until before setting off for the Moneyfields game in midweek – only at New Street! We set off at 9am and make good progress, missing out the potentially hazardous A34 & Bank Holiday traffic on the M3 by taking the back roads through Romsey and joining the M27 before driving through the picturesque New Forest. Physio Pete Tunney gives me a history lesson on the origins of the New Forest and that it was claimed as a royal forest by William the Conqueror, featuring in the doomsday d book. We arrive at New Milton’s JMC Stadium with plenty of time and get the dressing room ready with some of the players already there waiting. THE GROUND The JMC Stadium is a nice venue, with main stand running centrally along one of the sides. With the earlier kick-off off a larger crowd is expected with ground hoppers given the opportunity to watch this game and then catch one of the nearby games at 3pm. However, an official attendance of 79 was recorded so I guess many decided to watch the Man City vs. Arsenal game on TV instead. THE FOOD The refreshment kiosk offers hot or cold drinks, as well as a hot pie, sausage roll, vegan sausage roll or chocolate olate bars. There are no cheese burgers or hot dogs offered and I don’t have time to partake in a pie, although I do have a sausage and chips in the clubhouse

40

after the game. THE PROGRAMME The programme had a welcome to the Street from both the New Milton Chairman, Lou Fern and also Linnet’s boss Paul Turner. A page was dedicated to the club’s history and there was a back page squad list but that aside there wasn’t a great deal in it. THE GAME It was all change for the Street with five changes, with Danny Field, Adam Pearson and Lee Morris all making returns to defence. Shane Lock also returned after missing Tuesday’s defeat at Moneyfields and Ross Cook also returned to team after getting stuck on the A34 on Tuesday. The Street were looking to get a good start to continue their recent form but were up against a New Milton side who had won their opening four league games. Despite going into the wind first half, the Street got off to a perfect start within 4 minutes when Ross Cook took on his marker and then smashed his effort past the New Milton keeper. Halfway through the half the lead was extended thanks to the persistence of Lloyd Thompson, who quickly intercepted a pass out from the back and fired his effort past the keeper to make it 2-0! New Milton did create a couple of chances but nothing that caused Sean O’Brien any issues in the Street goal and if anything we could have added to the lead with a couple of efforts from Cook and Luke Hooper. The second half started with New Milton pushing further forward and their main threat Chris Long missing the target with a couple of efforts. The game was effectively killed off thanks to a brilliant counter attack move that www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

started with the energetic nergetic Shane Lock winning the ball in the middle of the Street half and playing a delightful ball on the right to Ross Cook, who squared the ball into Luke Hooper’s path and the young striker showed why he’s at the top of the goal scoring charts with a fine finish. New Milton to their credit kept going and got what turned out to be a consolation halfway through the second half when a deep free-kick free was headed home.. This woke up the local support that had been relatively quiet q for the majority of the game. Towards the end of the game things t were getting a little feisty with some poor challenges going in, but there was little threat in front of goall and at the finish it was the Street who ran out as winners and was New Milton’s first taste of defeat in the League this term. MAN-OF-THE-MATCH There were a number of candidates for manman of-the-match match after this game. Lee Morris putting in another solid performance at left back, Shane e Lock was his usual energetic self, full of running and keeping possession well, but Ross Cook got the award with his fine display that was noticed by not only Street supporters but by the opposition fans on Twitter during the game, with one tweet claiming claimin that the number 8 was superb! SUMMARY An excellent day overall, despite the early start,, we leave New Milton smiling and the t three points were crucial in closing the gap at the top with Newport also losing. Folland Sports continue to set the pace with 5 wins out of 5 and I monitor the scores as we head for home and we safely arrive back at 4pm. We now look forward to another long midweek trip to Cowes in the League Cup!

Pre-season season Predictions

By Matthew Badcock

Pressure in football is supposedly reserved for managers, players and even referees – but there can’t be anyone who has to perform when it really matters like the physio. Most of the time we’re used to seeing them dash on for minor knocks and strains. A bit of treatment, a blast of the freeze spray, a dab of the magic sponge, a squirt of the water bottle and on we go (I’m sure it’s roughly that easy!). Yet nobody is in the bar after saying, “Physio had a great game today”. It’s probably how they prefer it. Unseen, just going about their business quietly and efficiently. But I’m here to argue physios – and other medical staff at games – are the most important people in a football ground. Because when something really goes wrong, they are front and centre – often with hundreds, if not thousands, of eyes staring right at them. Anyone who has been in a ground when a bad injury occurs knows it can be quite a scary time – especially anything involving the head, neck or spine. I’ll never forget hearing a striker’s leg break in a challenge at the other end of a ground. Or seeing a player having a seizure on the ground. But the medical experts can’t get caught up in all that. Keeping calm, assessing the situation, they go through their processes, using all their knowledge from years of studying and observing to give the best possible care to a player. Already this season we’ve seen cases of games abandoned because of really bad injuries.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Last season Darlington’s Nicky Hunt suffered a head injury in a National League North game against Boston United. Darlo therapist Danny O’Connor – who was helped by the Pilgrims’ medical staff as well – spoke after about the situation that even saw Hunt stop breathing twice. The team stayed in position for hours waiting for an ambulance, keeping Hunt comfortable. “You kind of go into robot mode when something like this happens,” he told NE Sport News. “It’s a bit strange because you’re just dealing with the situation and everything else becomes irrelevant. “It’s quite interesting really because when I’ve spoken poken to people afterwards the majority say they wouldn’t know what to do in that situation, whereas I felt quite comfortable knowing what to do and when to do it, but that just comes down to experience.” It’s a remarkable responsibility to take on – I’d wager the majority of us couldn’t do a job like that. Last month Hallam physio Shannon Brooks drew high praise for her expertise and care when assistant referee Andrew Jarvis fell in during a game. Her er quick actions saved his life and has led Shannon to fundraise for defibrillators having seen the importance of one being available first-hand. Thankfully, incidents like this tend to be few and far between. Hopefully at your game today you have no o real need to notice any of the medical staff. But let’s keep showing them the appreciation they deserve.

league look In Division One three sides, Newport, Follands and New Milton, went into the day with one hundred per cent League records but by quarter to five only Follands could still claim to be in the same position. They returned to Andover Town, where they lost in midweek in the Hampshire Senior Cup, this time winning by three goals to one courtesy of goals from Fabio Manuel, Clayd Roach and Jo Sutherden with Luke Adams on the mark for the home side. Newport made the long journey to Downton and went down to goals from Paul Gulliver and Craig Tyson whilst the noon kick off at New Milton seemed to better suit visitors Andover New Street who were three up through Ross Cook, Luke Hooper and Lloyd Thompson before Chris Long netted for the home side. Linnets’ striker Luke Stone picked up an ankle dislocation and ligament damage about midway through the first half, we wish him a speedy recovery. Bemerton Heath added to their goal tally with a 4-1 home win over Fawley – Justin Bennett, Harry Beckley, Callum Sweeney and Zach Hine against one from Dec Hartigan - and there were four goals as well for Ash United at who are now rapidly finding their feet in the League. It was a personal triumph for Zac Aubrey Simpson who netted all four goals at Ringwood for whom Harry Smith, Harrison Clark and Sam Brown scored in reply. Nathan Gray registered a hat trick for Verwood in their 3-0 win at Infinity while East Cowes Vics achieved their best win for some three seasons scoring five without reply against the luckless Fleet Spurs - Toby Snow, Jimmi Burton, Harrison Yates, Ryan Gregory and Harri Catania the scorers.

44

Lloyd Thompson on target last Saturday at New Milton Town Laverstock & Ford and Petersfield shared four goals at The Dell – Russ Jones and Archie Lovegrove against Jake Alford and Marvin Orepo - while Whitchurch won by the odd goal in three at home to Millbrook. Craig Rutledge gave the home side the lead before Lewis Goodwin’s equaliser was quickly cancelled out by George Bishop. Finally in what almost counts as a local derby Romsey proved too strong for Totton & Eling, two goals from Jack Odam and one from Kieran Hancock for the home side with the lone Totton goal from Sam Ellis.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN As we all know, football has become a global language to such an extent that you could strike up a meaningful conversation with virtually anyone if they are even vaguely interested in the game. That global language extends beyond the great cities of the world, out into the suburbs, the countryside and even to orphaned islands in the Pacific or Atlantic oceans. Give a small child a ball and they will inevitably end up kicking it around. Football is as ubiquitous as ocean plastic waste, as accessible as eating, drinking and sleeping. When we think of islands, it’s a fair bet Easter Island will be uppermost in our thoughts. Those imposing statues, which have been likened to immobile Championship defences or giant, monolithic centre backs, are not only iconic, but have inspired many debates about their origin, purpose and meaning. Easter Island, which has a population of between seven and four thousand, depending on your source of reference, actually has a football team called CF Rapa Nui. The red and white shirts of Rapa Nui played their first official game on August 5 2009 when they hosted Colo-Colo (the only Chilean side to win the Copa Libertadores) in the Chilean Cup. Virtually the whole island turned out to see the cup tie, with one of the huge statues overlooking proceedings. Colo-Colo won 4-0. Prior to this tie, Easter Island played against the Juan Fernándes Islands which are largely uninhabited locations, but it is fair to say

football resides on Robinson Crusoe Island (population less than 1,000). Remote can also be something brought about by an incident. The Ukrainian town of Pripyat is one such place, an eerie and forboding area that was in the shadow of the terrible Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The population today is, understandably, zero, but at the time of the nuclear power station’s meltdown, 50,000 people lived there. Now, assorted wildlife roam around the abandoned amusement park and municipal apartment blocks . You would think that you cannot get more barren than the Antarctic, but football has left its mark there. In 2006, 18 explorers from Bulgaria and Spain played the first full football game on the frozen terrain. The match took place at the Livingston vingston Island in South Pole with the support of the Bulgarian champion football club CSKA Sofia. The Spanish explorers prepared a makeshift stadium, while the Bulgarians brought the ball, bearing the CSKA logo. Despite the freezing temperatures of minus seven degrees Celsius, the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Playing football or indeed, any sport, is seen as one of the corner stones of civilisation. To many, a football club or team is as important to society as those traditional totems, the church and pub. p It may be a simple game, but where there is a will, there is a way to make football possible, be it on a tropical island, frozen tundra, steamy jungle or parched middle-eastern eastern desert. Across the globe, there is always someone wanting to kick a ball, and, nd, somewhat peculiarly, someone who wants to watch the action!
