STREET WESSEX LEAGUE ONE PROGRAMME OF THE YEAR 2020/21
ANDOVER NEW STREET v FAWLEY AFC SATURDAY 29th JANUARY 2022 KICK-OFF 3PM
welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK
“
Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for this hugely anticipated Wessex League One fixture against Fawley AFC. This afternoon promises to be another keenly contested encounter, especially with our current home form in the league. The Oilers have after making a slow start in the league, been on an impressive run since the start of 2022. They come to Foxcotte Park in 16th position with only a few points separating them from 13th placed Petersfield Town. Street will need to be on their mettle to ensure their unbeaten run at Foxcotte Park in the league continues. There’s plenty inside this afternoon’s issue including match reports on or recent win at Bemerton and draw with Folland Sports and the thoughts of both manager Jamie Coleman and Football Chairman John Ward, and much more besides. Remember, if you have any feedback on the programme, please do get in touch with us. Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for today’s hugely anticipated Wessex League One encounter between ourselves and Fawley AFC. I’d like to welcome to joint managers Lee Shepherd and Dave Smith, as well as the Fawley players, committee and supporters. and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on tonight. Of course, this fixture comes amongst our recent run of tricky fixtures, which so far, we have come out unbeaten in the league, which includes a victory against league leaders Bemerton Heath and draws with Laverstock & Ford and Folland Sports last weekend. It was a battling performance from the entire team against Folland Sports, in a game that had everything. But what was most pleasing was the character of the side and the desire to put everything on the line for each other. It was a tricky pitch, and it was even more of an uphill struggle once we went a goal down and also down to 10 men just before halftime. The lads, however, were exceptional in the second half and it was a great equaliser for Hoops. Just reward for the effort and running that both he and Reece Rusher put in and also the battling performances from our midfielders and some fine and sometimes last ditch defending. The top of the league is starting to bunch together again with Folland Sports picking up a 0-0 home draw with Bemerton on Tuesday evening.
Frustration There was frustration on Tuesday night when we never got going against Alresford Town in the North Hants Senior Cup. The Magpies fully deserved their win, despite the fact we missed 3 good chances in the first half and were ultimately punished. We will, however, be expecting more this afternoon, especially given our strong record here at Foxcotte Park. We also welcome 3 players to the Street squad this week, with the signings of young goalkeeper Jordi Wilson, experienced defender Joe Wright, who offers class and leadership and is an excellent addition to our squad and we have also dual signed striker Chris Flood from National League South Hungerford. Chris has been struggling to get going this season with injuries and has taken the decision to play more locally and we are delighted to welcome here. So, there is a lot to be encouraged about with these signings and that is sure to be of huge benefit to us as the season reaches its climax over the next few months. Your backing here at Foxcotte Park has made this place a real fortress this season, so please turn up the volume, sing your hearts out and, most of all, enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM
WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD
Good afternoon and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Fawley AFC, here this afternoon for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable time with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into the promotion frame with our hard-fought victory over Bemerton Heath and also the battling draw with Folland Sports last Saturday.
– including a 2-2 draw with Downton and wins over Petersfield Town and East Cowes. They also pushed Andover Town in their recent match despite narrowly losing 2-1. We will of course need to be on our toes to ensure we can maintain our form.
Standard
May I take this opportunity to welcome our new signings to the club, Jordi Wilson, Joe Wright and Chris Flood, who all joined us this week and should help push us on further as we look to move up the table and fight for the automatic promotion spot with a host of clubs including Bemerton, Andover Town, Folland Sports and Newport IOW.
To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Today’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Although Fawley have not been as consistent this season, they have still produced some impressive results
6
We have had a number of winnable matches coming up with our trip to Millbrook on next Saturday and this is quickly followed up with a a midweek match with Ash United, next Tuesday with a 7.45pm kick-off. We then face a trip to Petersfield Town before we face Andover Town on the 15th of February, which will be sure to be a classic encounter.
HONOURS Wessex League Div 1:
One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS
THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT
Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on Fawley in another important game as we look to move further up the league table.
“WE’VE GOT OURSELVES INTO A GOOD POSITION – NOW IT’S UP TO US TO PUSH ON.”
After a poor start to the first half last Saturday when we went 1-0 down against Folland Sports, following their free-kick goal and then going down to 10 men following Ross Cook’s sending off just before half-time, we had to withstand some pressure from the Planemaker’s but although we missed a couple of opportunities, we kept going and were rewarded with Luke Hooper’s goal, we defended well afterwards to preserve the draw and the away point. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week. Michael Weatherall has come into the side for the last few games with Paddy out with injury and he has done well. We’ve conceded just four in the last five league matches, and it is great to see that our defensive solidity is coming to the fore again, at a time when we need it most.
www.ansfc.co.uk
facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet
Given the run we’ve been on it will be easy to get carried away. After 1 defeat in the last eleven league games that is no surprise. However, we have a strong and hungry management team, coaching staff and dressing room that will ensure we will not get complacent. As I’ve said, it’s a long old season and a lot can change.
All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on. This afternoon we take on Fawley, who are 16th in the league, and we will be in for a tough game this afternoon. Our recent form, especially at home, might mean we go into the match as favourites but that is nothing new to us. In my experience these are the games that are the toughest. We’ve already seen how competitive this league is, and that any team can beat any other side if the mentality and preparation is not right going into the game. We will be ready and looking forward to another battle this afternoon. Get behind us once again today. Enjoy the game.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT WEEK WHEN THEY TRAVEL SOUTH TO PLAY MILLBROOK AT TEST PARK
MILLBROOK WHO? Millbrook, aka the
Docker’s, from Test Park, are the Street’s opponents on the 5th of February. Millbrook won 3-1 in their most recent match against QK Southampton in the Southampton Senior Cup and they are currently in 11th place in the division with 38 points and are level with Verwood Town and behind 9th place New Milton by 2 points. The Street will be looking to get all three points after drawing against Millbrook here in late October when a last-minute penalty ensured a 3-3 draw.
HOW THEY DOING? Millbrook won their opening two matches in the league, as they defeated Ringwood Town and Infinity before they were defeated 7-2 at home to Bemerton Heath. Further defeats followed against Whitchurch, Andover Town and Laverstock & Ford, before they got back to winning ways with a 4-2 away victory over today’s opponents, Fawley. A fine 52 victory over Newport IOW came at the end of September before October saw a 6-0 win over Ash United but defeats to Petersfield, Newport IOW and Folland Sports. The Dockers form since Christmas as seen them pick up 9 points with wins over New Milton Town (4-2), Whitchurch (21) and Totton & Eling (4-0). They did feel the backlash from Street’s victory over leaders Bemerton a couple of week’s ago, as the Quins were 5-0 up by half time and rounded off a fine with three further goals in the second half.
10
HOW TO GET THERE? Test Park is 39
minutes or 35 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A303 towards Basingstoke. Then join the A34 and head towards and join the M3 heading south. At junction 13, Use the left 2 lanes to exit towards So'ton Docks/Bournemouth and merge onto the M27. At junction 3, Use the left lane to take the M271 S exit to Southampton/Docks. After 0.2 miles at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the M271. At junction 1, exit towards Lordshill/A3057/Nursling. After 0.6 miles at the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Brownhill Way. Stay on Brownhill Way and then turn left onto Lower Brownhill Road. Stay on Lower Brownhill Road before turning left and Test Park is on the left.
HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,
we have been there before, but we then played Team Solent in the Wessex Premier. The Street would lose 4-2, despite taking an early lead in the 4th minute through Ilyas Warshow. Shane Lock got Street’s other goal with Solent’s Hashim Kasimu getting a hat-trick and Silvano Obeng also netting. We have only met Millbrook once before our league game this season when they were named Bush Hill in the Russell Cotes Cup. The game played at Foxcotte Park in 2017, would see Shane Lock give the Street a 10th minute lead before Bush Hill would strike twice, once in each half to progress to the next round.

welcome FAWLEY AFC
It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Fawley Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Oilers make the journey to Foxcotte Park for the first time since a 4-3 defeat in November 2019, with a brace from skipper Matt Scott and further goals from Jazz Beavis and Luke Hooper securing the three points. Jake Biffin, Mark Lilley and Peter Southwick scored what turned out to be consolation goals for the Oilers. This afternoon’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with Fawley looking to get back to winning ways after their 2-0 defeat to New Milton Town last Saturday. Fawley didn’t get off to the best of starts to the season with a 3-0 defeat at Andover Town, an entertaining match for the neutral followed with a 4-4 draw with East Cowes. In fact, Fawley’s first win came at the start of September with a 2-0 home win over Verwood Town in the Wessex League Cup, Lee Burch and Elliot Earl on target. An impressive 2-2 draw at Downton was the only high point in September with defeats to Infinity and Millbrook in the league and also FA Vase and League cup exits to Laverstock & Ford and New Milton Town. To find out more about Fawley AFC visit: www.fawleyafc.com
October started with the Oiler’s first league win, a 4-2 win at home over Fleet Spurs and this was followed up with a 3-1 defeat to the Street. Further defeats to Verwood Town and Newport IOW came next but a 2-2 draw with Totton & Eling rounded off October. A thumping 6-0 defeat at Folland Sports, with Nathan Gray grabbing a Hat-trick, started off November. Infinity were then seen off 4-1, thanks to a Jake Smith double and Dylan Knight and Jacob Sheath also on the scoresheet. Laverstock & Ford took all three points with a narrow 1-0 win, before the Oilers picked up 4 points from their remaining 2 games in November with a 2-0 win at Petersfield Town and a 0-0 home draw with Ringwood Town. December saw three matches with a win, draw and defeat to Ash United, Millbrook and Whitchurch respectively. 2022 started with 2 wins over East Cowes and BTC Southampton in the Senior Cup. A narrow 2-1 defeat to Andover Town came before a midweek 12-0 win over Southbrook also in the Senior Cup. A 1-1 draw with Fleet Spurs, Dylan Knights goal being cancelled out by Thomas White’s 88th minute equaliser. New Milton Town then took all 3 points last Saturday with Luke Stone and Ben Cooper on target.

bluffers guide Fawley AFC... THE CLUB The Club was formed as AGWI United in 1923 and joined the Hampshire League six seasons later. In 1949 they changed their name to Esso Fawley. They won Division Three of the Hampshire League in 1995 and reached the Premier Division in 1999. In 2002 they changed their name again to Fawley AFC and joined Division Two of the Hampshire League in 2005. In 2010 they finished as runners-up and were promoted to the Premier Division. They sustained themselves into the premier division as underdogs every year and narrowly avoided the drop until the season 2016/17. The same year The Waterside Sports and Social Club closed due to financial difficulties, Fawley were relegated on goal difference. In their return to Division One they managed a mid-table finish but will be remembered for reaching the Sydenhams League Cup Final. They beat Shaftesbury, Stoneham, Hamble Club and Sholing on route in a cup run that upset all odds. They subsequently lost 4-0 to AFC Portchester in the final, a result proving it was one upset too far. Lee and Dave are building a team with a blend of experience Wessex League players combine with enthusiastic local young players. Their aim is to have a team that plays attractive and enjoyable football. Over the last couple of seasons our club’s small bunch of energetic committee members lead by Chairman Kev Mitchell have been working hard to upgrade the pitch and facilities and now keenly fund raising to build a new club house. To find out more about Fawley AFC visit: www.fawleyafc.com
FAWLEY – THE AREA A settlement has existed at Fawley for many centuries, and the village itself was recorded in the Domesday Book. Other areas in the parish can boast remains from the Stone Age and Roman occupation. A church at Fawley apparently existed in 971. The present church (All Saints) was built between 1170 and 1340. This church still exists and is the parish church of much of the surrounding area. The arrival of the Esso oil refinery in 1921 transformed a sparsely populated agricultural area into an industrial centre with a population of around 14,500. Modern Fawley is smaller and less populous than its more recently founded neighbours, Holbury and Blackfield, but remains the administrative centre of the parish. Other villages within the parish of Fawley include Hardley (a suburb of Holbury), Langley (a suburb of Blackfield), Ashlett, and Calshot. Calshot possesses shingle beaches and attracts significant numbers of tourists and local visitors during the summer months. Near Calshot is Luttrell's Tower, an 18th-century Gothic folly. BEMERTON HEATH H 1-2 STREET BISHOP 64
LAWTON 31, RAYFIELD OG 46
WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street produced a stunning performance to beat league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2-1, thanks to a world class strike from Harry Lawton and an own goal just 56 seconds into the second half. Andover New Street were without the isolating Ross Cook and there was a rather cautious start to the game from both sides before Reece Rusher saw two efforts fly wide in quick succession. The first threat on goal came with two Bemerton corners, one punched clear by Mike Weatherall and the other somewhat overhit for a throw on the other side. The game was very much end to end, though with Bemerton looking the more dangerous, and then Street enjoyed a spell of possession in which Harry Lawton was inches wide with a volley from Rusher’s cross and Weatherall saved well from a header at the other end. After the save, what can only be described as a fracas occurred. The immediate outcome was a red card for Bemerton’s Ronan Clancy, for an incident involving Shane Lock. Harry Lawton sent one effort across the face of goal but on the half hour mark he collected a partially cleared free kick and rifled the ball into the roof of the net from some thirty yard - a “worldie” in the current terminology. The predatory Justin Bennett was denied the equaliser by a superb last-ditch challenge from Ashley James to leave Street ahead at the break.
MOMENTS
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?
The second half could not have started better for Street as they doubled their lead in the opening sixty seconds. A long cross from the right caused consternation in the home area and the ball eventually went over the line with a defender getting the last touch for an own goal. Bemerton, seemingly deciding that attack was the best form of defence, began to control the midfield and use both flanks with Charlie Rayfield a. constant threat from his right back berth. Both sides made ample us of their substitutes, seemingly all in a matter of minutes, and midway through the fortyfive minutes the deficit was halved. Street had two chances to clear a left wing cross but could not get the ball away, and one of the substitutes, George Bishop, lifted the ball into the top of the net from somewhere near the penalty spot. New Street were now either sitting back, or being pushed back, and Weatherall saved well from Danny Young.

FOLLAND SPORTS 1-1 STREET BANHIRE 17
HOOPER 79
WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street earned a hard-fought point at fellow promotion challengers Folland Sports, despite trailing 1-0 at half-time and with only 10 men after Ross Cook was sent-off. The game was slow to get going – three injury stoppages in the opening five minutes did not help - and the first real action saw visiting goalkeeper Mike Weatherall confidently claim a dangerous free kick. The home side’s Augustine Banhire, who was a threat all afternoon, came off worse in a collision with Weatherall after chasing a through ball and the keeper then palmed away a fierce drive from Fabio Manuel. Street’s first attack of note saw a Ross Cook shot deflected for a corner, the first of three in quick succession that came to nothing, before the opening goal after eighteen minutes. Banhire won, what looked from the side lines, a rather soft free kick on the edge of the D and then added insult to injury as far as the visitors were concerned by cleverly curling the ball round the wall and inside the post Both Reece Rusher and Luke Hooper tested home goalkeeper Sam Webb before Will Genge missed a golden opportunity at the other end, lifting the ball over the bar after Weatherall parried an effort from former Street player Ilyas Warshow. Banhire found the net again, but the offside flag curtailed the celebrations, Hooper was denied by Webb’s legs and Cook was well stopped by Connor Rowe – which turned out to be the striker’s last positive action in the game. On the brink of half time something happened off the ball, Cook was infuriated and in the current vernacular, “lost it” and was shown a deserved red card. On the restart a Manuel shot was saved at the expense of a corner and Hooper was stopped by weight of numbers on reaching the area as the visitors made the better start before the home side should have extended their lead. Weatherall did extremely well to deny Banhire at point blank range, but Genge lifted the loose ball over both the keeper and the bar. Banhire was, not for the first time, denied by Wetherall as the game moved in to the final ten minutes with the scores suddenly level. Rusher’s long diagonal run took him to the bye line on the right and the low cross was coolly slotted past Webb by Luke Hooper, a reward for the effort and running of both players over the ninety minutes. The home side pressed desperately to try and restore their advantage, but the visiting defence stood firm, with substitute Adam Pearson winning most of the aerial duels, and despite some five or six minutes of stoppage time, they had to settle for a share facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet of thewww.ansfc.co.uk points.

NON-LEAGUE NEEDS YOU!
For the past three seasons I have been involved in volunteering and helping out with Non-League teams alongside my studies. Without Volunteers no Non-League side would be able to possibly function, which is why I would encourage more people to volunteer as the reward is not just colossus for the club, you're helping out with but for yourself also. Since the age of 12 I discovered I had a passion for Non-League football as soon as I attended my first ever game, it was a 0-0 draw between my local club Basingstoke Town and Havant and Waterlooville in the Conference South. It may have not been an encapsulating experience for many, but it was for me! I was in awe with the whole match day experience from the close connections between players and fans, the pulsating, passionate and loud atmosphere as well as the kindness of all around. I felt at one with NonLeague football and realised that it was soon to be an addiction which turned into one of my all-time favourite hobbies and passions.
26
Without Non-League football I cannot imagine what my life would be like, quite literally speaking. After having watched the Dragons for a few seasons I realised that I had a burning passion also for writing football. At this time, I had been running an Arsenal football fan page on Instagram called Gooner Liam Harding for a couple of years, which accumulated a fair number of followers and I realised that I should delve outside of this arena. Into one which would benefit others as well as myself-I turned to Non-League football teams and their programmes. One of the first clubs I contacted was Hendon, due to the connection it had with my Great Granddad Ted Drake who managed the club in the late 1940s after a successful career at Arsenal as Striker. His time as Dons manager proved to be a steppingstone that avalanched him into winning the title with Chelsea in 1955. So, I asked if I could write an article about him and the club accepted my request, offering me the opportunity to write more articles for the match day programme from that day onwards which I’ll never look back on! As many will know the official match day programme for clubs at this level would simply not be produced to such great quality which it is without the aid of volunteers. Due to the fact that the vast majority of Non-League teams operate on a part time basis apart from a few acceptances in the National League.
Soon afterwards I contacted Hartley Witney, Woking, Slough Town, Kingstonians, Paulton Rovers and various other Non-League teams from up and down the country to help out with writing Match day articles for. One day I was even invited to Salisbury to go and watch a game for free in the press box and write an article about my match day experience which turned out to be a thrill and a very cherish able experience at their expense. In April 2019 after Basingstoke were relegated from the Southern Premier after their final game at the Camrose losing 1-2 to Taunton Town, a very sorrowing occasion after having watched them only two seasons before being demoted from the National League South. The club were forced to play down at Winchester City's ground in order to carry on surviving in the now Southern League Division One South, which meant that every other week myself and my Granddad would have to make the 19-mile trip just to be able to carry on supporting them. It was at this point that the Announcer stepped down and I stepped up to volunteer and help out the club representing it with pride and passion for a season. I couldn’t have felt any more joyful communicating to all fans at the game through a microphone in a small garden shed educating them on fixtures, team line ups, substitutions and goal scorers. Without the travelling of the fans and the volunteers the club would have gone bust as little revenue was being made through ticket money.
www.ansfc.co.uk
facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet
It was then that made me realise that Volunteers can be the difference between life and death for a Non-League club. Fortunately, as of the 2020/21 season which folded rapidly due to Covid-19 Basingstoke returned to playing football within the Town at Winklebury. While ongoing negotiations await a return to the Camrose or a like-for-like ground between the Basingstoke and Deane Council and football club. As well as previous owner Rafi Razzack who evicted them from the Camrose being refused to go forward with his 89 house and caring home application on the Camrose ground nearly a year ago. Recently I have not been as busy volunteering due to attending Solent University since September and enduring a Sport Journalism course, to link up my passion of writing with my career goal of getting into the Sport Journalism industry. Nevertheless, I was still able to find loopholes which allowed me to carry on doing so in some shape or form helping out with recording post-match interviews for Whitchurch United. Another kind and friendly team this time in the Wessex League Division One, currently nesting 12th in the table. It made me realise that with so little time with part time work as well you can still manage to volunteer if you are willing and wanting to, and that time is not just of an essence.

Andover New Street 2-1 Folland Sports 12th September 2017 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by a heavy defeat at Romsey and a narrow exit of the FA Vase at Tadley Calleva. The distraction of the League Cup gave manager John Smith the opportunity to give some of the fringe players a start wityh Nic Turpin making a rare start up-front. Fellow League One side Folland Sports were the visitors under the Foxcotte Park floodlights. The Planemakers were struggling near the foot of the table with 4 points from their opening 6 matches. Street started the game well and Turpin perhaps should have done better when he blasted wide in the opening minute with just the keeper to beat. The Street continued to create chances with Zac Hine, Jazz Beavis and Gunner Yates all going close to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

WESSEX LEAGUE
LATEST NEWS Fareham striker Gary Austin closing in on another milestone ahead of potentially calling time on his prolific non-league career Gary Austin has one regret ahead of potentially calling time on his playing career. It has nothing to do with the fact he was released by Portsmouth after a few years in the Blues’ academy when he was a teenager.
ALSO... AFC Portchester strike star Lee Wort's third chance to reach significant season goal milestone in Wessex Premier battle with Bashley
Instead, the Fareham Town striker wishes he had spent the whole of his adult playing days at Cams Alders. As it was, he had started out at Horndean in 2005 before following boss Mike Benfield to Fareham two years later. He later had spells under Dave Carter at both Horndean and Moneyfields. After playing for Moneys in the Southern League, Austin returned to Fareham in the summer of 2018. Now 36, he confesses this might be his last season for the Reds. If it is, it could be one to remember. Last weekend, he celebrated his 350th competitive appearance for Fareham, having made his debut in August 2007. The breakdown was as follows - 224 Wessex League starts, 49 league sub appearances, 63 cup starts, and 14 cup sub outings. Coming on as a sub, he struck late on to give his side a 3-3 draw. It was his 96th competitive Fareham goal. Austin is aiming to become only the 10th Fareham player ever to score a century of goals for the club. He is currently 11th in the all-time list - own goals (120) are eighth overall - with Micky Swain (103) immediately ahead of him. According to stats compiled from the Wessex League page on the FA’s FullTime website, the forward has netted 204 times in league and cup action for Horndean, Fareham and Moneyfields (but only when the latter were a Wessex club). Austin also has a chance to reach the first cup final during his Fareham career. To do so, the Reds must knock out ‘El Creekio’ rivals AFC Portchester in a mouth-watering Wessex League Cup semi-final at Cams Alders on March 22.

Strike ace Lee Wort will be looking to make it third time lucky in his bid to chalk up a magnificent AFC Portchester goal milestone this season on Saturday. The Royals marksman has stood on 29 goals for the campaign in his side's past two outings - failing to find the net in trips to AFC Stoneham or Amesbury in order to take him through the 30-goal barrier. Wort, whose 29 strikes have come in 34 appearances this term, had the ball in the net in the midweek 2-0 win at bottom-side Amesbury - only for his effort to be ruled out for offside. And after being denied on a couple of other occasions, boss Dave Carter is finally hoping to see his hitman reach 30 goals when they entertain Wessex League Premier sixth-placed Bashley on Saturday.
ROUND-UP Smallbrook flood damage headache for speedway and Ryde Saints The extensive flooding which hit Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde after road improvement contractors accidentally burst a mains water pipe, is causing huge headache for Island Speedway and Ryde Saints Football Club chiefs who share use of the sports facility. With Smallbrook's pitch lying on a clay layer, drainage this time of the year tends to be a relatively slow process, so this flood will be a blow to the club — and Newport Football Club who groundshare this season — in their efforts to get games on. Ryde Saints chairman Jamie Humm said: "Our drainage ties in to the stadium site's main drainage system, so an assessment will need to be carried out in due course to see what damage may have been done to the drainage network as shale was washed into it. "It's going to be a bit of a wait and see about what this flooding has had on our drainage and pitch playability." www.ansfc.co.uk
FA issues update on Brockenhurst's FA Vase fifthround tie with either Athletic Newham or Littlehampton
The FA have commented on the confusion surrounding Brockenhurst's FA Vase fifth round tie. The Badgers had initially been drawn away to face Athletic Newham in the fifth round, before reports emerged that the London-based side had played two different suspended players in two separate ties. Charges were subsequently raised by the FA, as Athletic Newham were charged twice for the separate offences, with the FA telling the Daily Echo: “It is alleged that the club played a suspended player against Abbey Rangers FC in the Third Round Proper on Saturday 11 December 2021, and played a separate suspended player versus Littlehampton Town FC in the Fourth Round Proper on Saturday 15 January 2022." On Thursday evening, Brockenhurst and Littlehampton were informed that Littlehampton had been reinstated into the competition - subject to an appeal by Athletic Newham. That appeal has now been made, with both clubs tweeting that the fixture was back in limbo. After being approached for comment by the Daily Echo, the FA stated: "Athletic Newham FC has been removed from The FA Vase for a breach of the competition’s Rule 15(d) that occurred during a tie against Littlehampton Town FC in the Fourth Round Proper on Saturday 15 January 2022. "Athletic Newham FC denied a charge in relation to fielding a suspended player during this tie but The FA’s National Game Competitions Sub-Committee found it to be proven during a subsequent hearing after considering the evidence. Littlehampton Town FC was awarded the tie and reinstated into the competition by the Committee and is now scheduled to play Brockenhurst FC at home in the Fifth Round Proper on Saturday 12 February 2022 subject to any appeal by Athletic Newham FC. The separate charge in relation to allegedly fielding a suspended player against Abbey Rangers FC in the Third Round Proper on Saturday 11 December 2021 was withdrawn following receipt of evidence from Athletic Newham FC." Whilst the FA did confirm that one of the charges had been withdrawn, they did not comment on whether an appeal had been made - despite the updates from Brockenhurst and Littlehampton.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 GOALKEEPERS OF ALL TIME.... 10 GORDON BANKS
Gordon Banks is widely regarded as the greatest England goalkeeper. The Sheffield-born shot-stopper died in 2019 at the age of 81 and will be forever remembered for that save against Brazil in the 1970 World Cup. Producing a save that stopped the world, Banks pulled off an incredible reflex save against the powerful and directive header from Pele - with fans and pundits around the world dubbing it 'the save of the century'.
8
PETER SCHMEICHEL
Alongside Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's most legendary goalkeepers.
The world-class Dane was one of the best reflex savers that the world has ever produced, and won five league titles with Manchester United, as well as the Champions League in 1999. He is among the all-time greatest footballers in the history of Scandinavian football and is widely known for his trademark shouts at defence to command them.
7 OLIVER KAHN
9
EDWIN VAN DER SAR
Edwin van der Sar was a truly outstanding goalkeeper who arguably shone brightest during the final years of his career with Manchester United.
Saving here, there and everywhere, the Dutchman was a force between the sticks for the Red Devils where he won four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
Oliver Kahn is best remembered for his 14-year spell with Bayern Munich, where he won multiple titles including eight Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League. Kahn was a runner-up with Germany at the 2002 World Cup but won the Golden Ball that tournament. He also finished third in the voting for both the 2001 and 2002 Ballon d'Or awards.
Before United, he also starred for Ajax in the 1990s before moving on to Juventus and Fulham.
6
PETR CECH
Arguably the greatest goalkeeper of the Premier League era, Petr Cech won four league titles with Chelsea, plus the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. Cech was as important as John Terry in their superlative defensive record between 2004 and 2006, in which they conceded just 15 and 22 goals in back-to-back Premier League title wins. The 38-year-old spent the final four years of his career with Arsenal, although he is listed as Chelsea's current emergency goalkeeper.
38
5
MANUEL NEUER
Manuel Neuer, an unorthodox but supremely talented goalkeeper, has enjoyed huge success with Bayern Munich and Germany over the past decade. The 35-year-old is one of the greatest and most decorated goalkeepers in the world and was the best German footballer in the first half of the 2010s. It's not unusual to see him 30 plus yards off his line, too, playing a sort of sweeper-keeper role - making him one of the bravest and most confident goalkeepers we've ever seen.
3
GIANLUIGI BUFFON
Gianluigi Buffon was the greatest goalkeeper in the world in the 2000s and is considered by many as the greatest Italian shot-stopper ever, even above the great Dino Zoff.
4
DINO ZOFF
Dino Zoff is one of the best goalkeepers the world has ever seen - and that's a fact.
Still going strong at the age of 43, Buffon is a muchloved figure in the world of football. The Juventus legend played 178 times for Italy between 1997-2018 and lifted the World Cup in 2006. He is also the all-time most capped player for Italy and has made around 350 clean sheets in first-level club games - just ten behind Zoff. Maybe he's still playing at 43 for his love of the game or to break Zoff's record, who knows?
The Italian, now 79 years old, famously played for the likes of Napoli and Juventus. He won the World Cup in 1982 and the European Championship 14 years earlier. Incredibly, he boasts the record for having kept a clean sheet the longest amount of time (1,142 minutes) from September 1972 to June 1974. To put his tremendous career into context, he has kept 360 clean sheets from 720 first-level club games, which is truly outstanding.
2
IKER CASILLAS
The Champions League, European Championship and World Cup, you name it, and Iker Casillas has won it. His trophy haul says a lot and the rest of the talking was done by his sheer brilliance showcased on the pitch. Best remembered for his glittering 16-year senior career with Real Madrid, Casillas played 725 times for Los Blancos before moving to FC Porto in 2015. Casillas was also Spain's first-choice goalkeeper during the country's most successful period in their history between 20082012, when La Roja won two European Championships and the World Cup. www.ansfc.co.uk

1 LEV YASHIN
Lev Yashin is, without a shadow of a doubt, the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the game and is regarded as Soviet Union's greatest football ever. One of football's truly legendary names, Yashin spent his entire professional career with Dynamo Moscow, but it was his performances at international level with the Soviet Union that caught the world's attention. During his career, he had stopped around 150 penalty kicks, which is the best record of all-time, while keeping an incredible 270 clean sheets from approximately 420 career games played. More importantly, he remains the only goalkeeper in history to win a Ballon d'Or and it is likely that it will be some time before that is replicated.

NON-LEAGUE & SOCIAL MEDIA
By Matt Badcock
When I was a junior reporter starting out at The NLP, there was a Friday afternoon task I dreaded. Through the long summer months, and with blank pages to fill, we used to have a weekly short on every club at Steps 1 and 2. The idea was to fill it with the latest transfer, maybe a nice little quote from the manager about how his squad was shaping up or similar. Without naming names, there were a few clubs you didn’t want on your list. Nothing against them, but there were a handful of teams where finding a fresh nib of news was not easy. Club websites wouldn’t be updated since the last time you checked. The manager’s phone would have the dialling tone you hear when someone is on holiday…it was a thankless task and all part of the learning. Of course, this was all before the days of twitter and a constant stream of updates. Back then, people would nominate people for our Goal of the Season with a written description of the goal. If you were lucky, you’d get a hazy piece of footage to go from. It’s amazing quite how much the media landscape has changed for Non-League clubs. Now games are filmed by automated cameras and wonder goals – the National League teams aside with their weekend embargo – are there to see within 30 minutes of the final whistle. Ollie Babington scored a screamer for Clevedon Town at the weekend that is being mentioned as a Puskas contender and has been seen worldwide.
It’s now commonplace to see Step 5 and 6 clubs using animated graphics when they score a goal, uploading interviews with managers and players, putting excellent highlights packages together, all on top of their other social media posts. While the odd account will use their platform to hammer a referee over a perceived injustice, the majority are becoming more and more ‘professional’. No doubt it has an impact on getting more people through the gate. Being proactive can make a big difference. Dorking Wanderers have an insider documentary that is on YouTube and has millions of views on TikTok. The club say it is noticeable people have attended their games, or purchased items from the club shop, on the back of it. There is so much high-quality content to consume and is a credit to all those who do their bit for their local club. It certainly keeps us at The NLP on our toes and helps keep our team informed on what is happening across the country. We could even bring back those news nibs this summer…

league look The Division One programme started on Friday evening with a two all draw between Downton and Laverstock & Ford in front of a staggering attendance of 401, the highest in the Division this season. Sam Howe and Marcel Laptas scored in the first half for the Robins with Chae Sykes notching a goal in each half for the visitors. Leaders Bemerton bounced back in style from last Saturday’s defeat with an 8-0 rout of Millbrook at Moon Park. Justin Bennett (inevitably) led the way with a hat trick, Ronan Clancy notched two and George Bishop, Jake Burgess and Cameron Roach completed the eight. Millbrook will no doubt be relieved that they do not have to face Bemerton again this season having conceded fifteen goals in the two meetings. Goals from Adam Pattison and Jordon Smith gave Andover Town the spoils at the Portway in the local derby with Whitchurch while Follands and Andover New Street drew one a piece at Hamble. Gus Banhire gave the hosts the lead before Street, who were reduced to ten men for half the game, equalised through Luke Hooper ten minutes from time. Newport reversed their fixture with Verwood to Potterne Park but overcame any difficulties with a 6-1 victory after the scores had been level at the break. Joe Butcher with three, Josh Younie two and Jordan Browne for the Port and Matt Vining credited with the Verwood consolation, Romsey continued their bid for a top five place with a two-goal win over Ash at the AEC Protection Bypass ground – Charlie Rattley and Jack Odam on target – while New Milton returned to winning ways with a best of three goals victory at East Cowes Vics. Noel McCarthyGardiner and an own goal with a lone strike from Sam Cant not enough for the home side.
48
A similar score line at Ringwood, though with the home side coming out on top, courtesy of goals from Joe Petty and Ryan Hamm against one from Joe Steel for Totton & Eling. The final game between Fleet Spurs and Fawley ended one all with a late goal from the home side’s Tom White cancelling out a first half effort from Dylan Knight and the results of those last two matches means that Fleet Spurs have moved off the bottom place in the table to be replaced by Totton & Eling.

HOLD THE
Back Page WITH NON-LEAGUE PAPER REPORTER DAVID RICHARDSON The phrase ‘magic of the cup’ is synonymous with the FA Cup’s early rounds but in recent weeks it has been used alongside the FA Trophy. The competition for the top four tiers of nonLeague football is now entering the last 16 and those clubs will be starting to dream of the Wembley final in May. While some National League sides may devalue the Trophy in place of league success and promotion to the Football League, the knock-out competition, which has been played since 1969, provides a valuable opportunity to lower-league clubs. Just look what it meant for Needham Market last weekend winning a dramatic penalty shootout 8-7 at top-flight Yeovil Town, who have created plenty of their own cup history. Market boss Kevin Horlock described it as a ‘special day’ for the Step 3 side. Elsewhere, Cheshunt, also playing at the same level as Needham, won 3-0 at National League South club St Albans City while Morpeth Town came out on the right side of a seven-goal thriller against Step 2 Boston United, winning 4-3. Tonbridge Angels upset National League King’s Lynn Town too. And it’s not even the victories that can provide memories. Larkhall Athletic, of the Southern League Division One South, enjoyed a trip to National League high-flyers Stockport County on Saturday. It was the furthest the club had been in the competition, and they made sure to make the most of it by staying over on the Friday night AND Saturday to enjoy themselves postmatch. The Larks supporters travelled well too with 169 in attendance at Edgeley Park.
54
Larkhall manager Ollie Price, no stranger to a big cup tie having played against Norwich City in a televised FA Cup first round game for Paulton Rovers, told The NLP of the club’s excitement before the Stockport fixture. “It’s an absolutely incredible draw, it’ll be a fantastic day for the club, and everyone connected,” he said. “This is what it’s all about. I know they say the magic of the FA Cup, but this is the magic of the Trophy!” The FA Trophy is made extra special by the FA’s persistence to play the final at Wembley on Non-League Finals Day, also featuring the FA Vase which always delivers a brilliant spectacle – the last six finals have produced 24 goals between them! Some supporters may say the final should be held at a smaller, more intimate ground but speak to any manager or player and they will say they want to be walking out under the arch. We’ve been treated to so many great finals over the years, not least most recently when Step 3 Hornchurch beat Hereford. It’s given many clubs from the same level hope they can go all the way too. Brackley Town’s penalty victory over Bromley was also dramatic, so too was North Ferriby United’s upset of Wrexham in 2015. The memories go on and on. So, the Trophy is still special, still ‘magic’ and it was a pleasure to have Needham Market’s upset taking centre-stage on our front-page last weekend – sorry Yeovil fans, you had your turn last month in the FA Cup!
