THE MANAGER

Good evening and a very warm welcome to Foxcotte Park and also a happy new year to all our supporters for this evening’s game against our visitor’s Fleet Spurs.

I’d like to welcome the Spurs’ management team, their staff, players and all officials and supporters who have made the journey to Andover this evening. Fleet Spurs are a club, who have struggled over the past few seasons since their move back to the Wessex League This season they have struggled but have certainly given us a couple of tough matches at their place in both league and cup, and I fully expect another tough game tonight.

We will need to be at our very best to get a positive result. Which leads me very nicely to our performance last week at neighbours Andover Town.

We come into the game having continued our impressive unbeaten run in the league and with Town ’s excellent home form it promised to be a n exciting encounter.

From 1 to 16 we were super b from the first whistle. We weathered an early onslaught, which we excepted from our hosts and then broke to score a wonderful individual goal from Cooky.

We continued to create chances but had to wait until the 45th minute for our next goal, when Cooky was put clear and was brought down by the keeper.

Cooky has been so reliable from the spot, so it was no surprise when he made it 2-0.

A slight change at halftime, with Harry Beckley moving onto the right and Cam Thatcher coming on for Mikey Davis. We continued to show the attacking prowess we have as we grew even stronger in the second half.

Harry Beckley perhaps will be disappointed not to get on the scoresheet with a couple of opportunities, but he had an outstanding game, and it was left to Cooky to get his hat-trick and his 16th of the season in the league.

After tonight’s game we move into an important phase of the season with an away game at New Milton and then facing Newport IOW at home – both games could be vital in our bid for promotion.

Please continue to give it everything you’ve got from stands.

Enjoy the game.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

WITH MATT BADCOCK – NLP EDITOR

Each week we are kindly invited onto Tim Fuell’s Non-League Show where we talk about all the latest goings-on around the game.

Most episodes this season we have got onto the managerial merry-goround. It certainly seems to be spinning at all levels this season with dug-out changes aplenty. Sometimes it can be hard to keep up with all the ins and outs!

But we often question if NonLeague management is one of the most unique jobs in football?

And why would any of them do it!?

Love and obsession for the game no doubt, but there can’t be many ‘part-time’ jobs – as is the case for the majority in Non-League outside of the top flight – that have the same stresses and strains – and all in the public eye of a paying public, who will often criticise with the benefit of hindsight.

Last week, saw the return of Peter Taylor as he was appointed new manager of Step 4 Maldon & Tiptree.

Taylor has worked at all levels of the game, with the best players in the country and tasted success.

“The level doesn’t faze me at all,” Taylor told my colleague Jon Couch. “I’ve helped a lot of players progress at many different levels as a coach – that’s something I’m very proud of.

“I’d like to think that if the Maldon lads look at my experience and see the clubs I have been with then they will look forward to working with me too.

“I’m the type of coach who likes improving players and hopefully I can use that experience in giving the lads a bit of a boost.”

Taylor has seen it all in the game, no doubt. Arriving at the other end of the management career spectrum is a newbie, Dean Cox, who has taken over at Lancing.

The former Brighton and Leyton Orient winger has been around the game long enough himself to have be prepared for his latest step as he goes from pitch to dug-out.

Chairman Steve Taylor said: “If Coxy can transfer his playing success to managerial success then we will be extremely happy.”

He certainly experienced the highs and lows in his first game at the helm as the Lancers came from two goals behind to win 3-2 with Reece Hallard’s game-winning double coming on 83 and 90 minutes.

And that feeling is probably why they do it!

THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW

Mention first of an occurrence on Tuesday that puts everything else in the shade. The Premier Division game between Laverstock & Ford and Bemerton Heath Harlequins was abandoned after one of the Assistants, Andy Brown, collapsed. Andy is a popular and long serving Official on the League (some ten years or more) and immense credit and thanks are due to the physios and officials of both Clubs for their handling of the situation. Andy suffered a bleed on the brain and was transported by Air Ambulance to Southampton Hospital where his recovery is under way. All connected with the League in any way will hope that the recovery is full, and thoughts and wishes are with Andy and his family.

Football seems a little mundane after that, but AFC Portchester maintained their lead at the top of the Premier Division with a three all draw at Havant & Waterlooville against Moneyfields, watched by a crowd of just over 1,000. Portchester were 2-0 up at the break before a second half fightback ensured Moneys a share of the points. Charlie Bell with two and Callum Laycock were the home scorers with a Brett Pitman double and one from Conor Bailey the Portchester marksmen.

Six goals at Hurn Bridge as well with Christchurch defeating Bournemouth by four goals to two thanks to a double from Micky Finch and singles from Sami Makhloufi and Jack Mann, while Joe Freak and Kyle Graham were the Poppies scorers. Just one goal in the other Premier match at Shaftesbury with Ash Pope giving the home sid e the points against Brockenhurst.

Division One started on Monday at Beatrice Avenue where a goal in each half from Joe Craig gave Newport victory over East Cowes Vics in front of an attendance exceeding 300. On to Tuesday and New Milton maintained their top placing with a 5-1 home defeat of Ringwood Town. As is customary the goals were shared around with Tyler Rudd netting twice and Noel McCarthy-Gardiner, Tyrrell Sampson and Charlie Turner also on the score sheet. Ringwood’s consolation came from a late p enalty converted by Harry Smith.

300 plus people at The Portway saw Andover New Street win the Andover Derby by three goals to nil thanks to a Ross Cook hat trick. No goals at Love Lane where Petersfield Town and Folland Sports fought out a goalless draw while the other three games finished in away victories. Millbrook added to Romsey’s losing run with a 4-1 success and Hamworthy Recreation kept up their fine form with a 3-1 win at Verwood, Chris Long scored twice and Jack Satterley added the third for the Rec

With seven minutes remaining on the clock at Kennels Lane Fleet Spurs looked on target for their first win and points of the season as they led Ash United by two goals to one but two late strikes from the visitors meant it was not to be.
