welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for the second time in 7 days as we host Fleet Spurs. A warm welcome, especially to the visiting Spurs supporters who have made the trip across from Fleet today. We hope you enjoy your brief stay with us and have a safe journey home. Well, what a game we had here last Saturday, as the team came back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to then go on earn the 3 points with a rush of goals in a frenetic second half. Then we had the even more frantic finish to the local derby match with Andover Town, when we deservedly gained a point with 2 late goals in the last 8 minutes and also a red card. Will there be such drama today? Let’s hope so! We’ve got plenty inside this issue of Word on the Street, including the boardroom thoughts of Football Chairman John Ward plus news and views around Foxcotte Park, including Cameron Thatcher’s thoughts following the 2-2 draw with Andover Town in midweek. Enjoy the game and your reading and we’ll see you again in two weeks’ time when East Cowes Vics are the visitors! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park once again for our second home league match of the season. A warm welcome to joint managers Scott Kemp and Suj Khera, their staff and players plus the committee and fans who have made the journey West on the M3. Fleet Spurs have returned to the Wessex League following the FA league restructure and come into this game on the back of three defeats and will prove to be a different proposition this afternoon as they will no doubt be determined to obtain the three points today. Today is the third game in 7 days after we came through two tough and eventful matches. On Saturday we started slowly against Infinity, who came and made it great battle. We were rather fortunate to be level at half-time, with Infinity missing a few guilt edge chances and after they scored with a free kick, we managed to find an equaliser through Luke Hooper.

Fitness We certainly upped through the gears in the second half after Infinity retook the lead just after the break but the lads showed great spirit to equalise straight away and then went goal crazy during a fine twenty minute spell. The game got stretched during that period and the lads showed their superior fitness levels and it was great to see the attacking prowess of Ross Cook making his full debut. The only disappointing thing was the way the lads eased off towards the end and conceded a third goal that could have been avoided with more concentration.

Tuesday’s game with Andover Town was tough but another great battle and an excellent advert for this level of football. Although we were disappointed not to be in front at half-time, we found ourselves 2-0 behind at the break, despite having numerous chances in the first half. The second half didn’t have the same intensity but credit the lads and Cam Thatcher was able to break through and finish well to reduce the deficit, which was followed by a straight red card for Town’s Nathan Primus for a stamp all made the final eight minutes very tense. Ross Cook came up trumps towards the end and was rewarded with his performance with the late equaliser. What impressed me most on Tuesday, however, was the effort of the players when we were 2-0 down and the enthusiasm and passion from you in the stands. Your support was superb and I thought it was an all-round top effort from everybody which cumulated in us getting the point out of the game. We’re going to need that support again this afternoon, and we’re going to need the energy and expertise of the players on the pitch. This season we have already shown what is possible when we are all together. Remember, the stronger the team, the stronger the team. Get behind us once more today and let’s hope for the three points. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to Foxcotte Park. We also welcome our visitors this afternoon, Fleet Spurs. We meet Fleet for the first time since we lost 2-1 on the 17th December 2016, when Fleet Spurs were last in the Wessex League. What a dramatic 7 days it’s been for the club. Firstly last Saturday when we entertained Infinity, who certainly came here with the aim of picking up the three points. We showed in spells on Saturday what quality we have in the squad with Luke Hooper and Ross Cook forming a good understanding upfront, backed up by the energetic Shane Lock. Again we didn’t get the best of starts with Infinity taking the lead and actually on another day they could and perhaps should have been further in front at half-time, however they didn’t take their chances and Luke Hooper showed them how it’s done just before half-time.

6

The second half seemed like it was going to follow as similar pattern to the first, especially when Infinity took the lead again early in the second half. However, the lads showed their quality with a fine goal to equalise straight away and then we were treated to some fine attacking play for a 20 minute spell we took the game to our opponents, who had no answer to our superior play. However, we then lapsed and allowed Infinity to get a goal back with lack of concentration but overall it was a satisfactory result to get our first three points of the season. We then followed this up with an excellent performance at Andover Town. We started really well and but for better finishing or just that bit of luck we could have been 3 or 4 up at halftime. Instead we were left to rue a couple of mistakes that Town took advantage of and we were left with a mountain to climb in the second half. It certainly didn’t look like it was going to be our day, especially as in the second half the chances didn’t seem to be happening and we looked a bit short of ideas. Then with 8 minutes remaining we were able to finally get the goal through Cam Thatcher.

With Andover Town sitting back and trying to see out the game, we managed to put a few chances together until Ross Cook sparked jubilant scenes when he scored the equaliser.

Thanks At this point can I say thank you to the supporters that were there on Tuesday night. The clashes with Andover Town are always memorable but to see that many people enjoying a great game and also a great advert for the Wessex League. The crowd of 369 was the 3rd highest at step 6 on Tuesday night with only Nelson FC (530) and North Ferriby (425) having bigger attendances.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

After the defeats at Whitchurch and also against Shepton Mallet in the cup, it was pleasing to bounce back to winning ways last Saturday against Infinity. We were all bitterly disappointed with the performance against Whitchurch. That was very unlike us, but the truth was we never turned up on the night. We let ourselves down, the managers down and you the fans down. However, we needed to believe we had the mental strength to bounce back and I thought we did that really well against Infinity. A lot of people will look at the result and the scoreline and think it was an easy win. That’s far from the truth. It was a difficult game – like a lot of them are, especially at Foxcotte Park.

Work Hard It was fantastic to see Luke Hooper scoring a hat-trick last Saturday. He is working really hard upfront and seems to have formed a great partnership with Ross Cook. We need to continue to work hard and that’s something I hope is evident to everyone watching.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Tuesday’ss game against Andover Town was a prime example of this. The game seemed to be slipping away from us but the lads continued to believe we could get something mething from the game and we kept plugging away right until the end and we deservedly got a point. Deep down I felt we deserved more than the point but being 2-0 2 down with less than 10 minutes to go, I was happy to take the point as it felt more like a victory than a draw. We have been on the receiving end of late goals last season so it was really pleasing to finally be able to celebrate it happening for us for a change.

Winning Mentality Today’ss game will be another tough game as most of the Wessex matches are. Fleet haven’t haven got off to the best of starts but that makes them even more dangerous as they will want to get their season started this afternoon by picking up the 3 points that are available this afternoon. However, we need to start on the front foot this afternoon like we did on Tuesday and we need that winning mentality – and if we can get into habit, who knows what we can achieve. Thank you for your support on Tuesday and get behind us again this afternoon.

word on the street programme of the year

Street’s Media Manager and Programme Editor, Kevin Pipkin said; “It’s wonderful to receive this award for the programme this season. There is a lot of hard work done by the club’s volunteers each year, but it was made even harder this year because of COVID-19 19 restrictions and additional guidelines the club must adhere to. The club is passionate about giving supporters the perfect match experience and the match-day match programme me plays a big part in that. The size of the programme has increased with the amount of fresh content supplied this season and was up to an impressive 72 pages for each game, something not common at Step 6 in non-league league and it is not packed with adverts adver either.

The 20210/21 season may have ended abruptly but the Street were still able to celebrate receiving some silverware when the Wessex League announced that the Club were awarded “Programme of the Year” for Division One.

We try to give a good mix of content with news, interviews, features and match reports of not only our first team, but also our Swifts and Ladies team. We also included 10 pages dedicated to our visitors, which is not normal at our level of football. The club will receive the trophy and a prize fund of £150 from the Wessex League in due course.

The club’s programme “Word on the Street”, which constantly looks at ways at improving year on year, was introduced as an online edition for last season for the first time, with printed copies available and posted to customers upon request. The club came top, ahead of other notable entries from Romsey Town, Newport IOW, Downton and New Milton Town.

welcome FLEET SPURS

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Fleet Spurs Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. Spurs make their first visit to our corner of Hampshire since a opening day 3-2 defeat in August 2016 and will be aiming to pick up three points here for the first time since 2014. Fleet Spurs arrive back in the Wessex following four seasons in the Combined Counties League, where they have struggled in Division One. In 2017/18 season they finished 16th on 26 points and conceded 127 goals. The following campaign saw them drop one place into 17th, recording the same amount of points for the season. The men responsible for trying to get the Spurs up the table are joint managers Scott Kemp and Suj Khera.

The Spurs campaign started with a 5-0 5 defeat away at Verwood Town. The Potters were flying out of the traps and were 4-0 up at half-time time through goals by Mathew Burt, Nathan Gray with two and Oliver Davies scoring just before half-time. half The Spurs tightened up at the back in the second half and there was only one more goal for the Potters in the second period and this came late through substitute Owen Nicholson. Nicholso Last Saturday the Spurs travelled to Wiltshire to face last season’s form side Laverstock & Ford. Goals from Russell Jones (2), Archie Lovegrove, Jordan Matthews, Lewis Wakeford and James McSorley ensured the victory. Fleet Spurs were level at 1-1 on the half hour mark thanks to a goal from Thomas White. Finally on Tuesday evening they travelled to Petersfield Town and were undone late in the second half when Petersfield converted a penalty on 70 minutes and ensured the victory with a further goal in the 85th minute.

Fleet haven’t got off to the best of starts this campign and will be looking to pick up their first points of the season this afternoon.

JRC CLEANING

in opposition FLEET SPURS CLUB HISTORY Fleet Spurs Football Club started in 1948, shortly after World War II, when a group of young footballers began playing friendly matches in the Fleet and Aldershot area.

first team was promoted to Hampshire League Division 2 and became ame champions in 1998/99 and was duly promoted to Division 1. They played two seasons in that division, finishing in sixth position, but were immediately relegated to Division 2.

Opponents included the Royal Medical Corps, Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery, Royal Army Service Corps, Parachute Regiment, and Wellington Press. Tradition holds that Fleet Spurs FC was formed as a reaction, or an alternative, to the long-established "semiprofessional" Fleet Town FC. This was to provide an amateur football club for local players with a strong social environment.

After a reorganisation in local football, the club moved into Wessex League Division 3 in 2004/5. Following further reorganisations, including the renaming and renumbering of the divisions, it moved to Wessex League Division 1, which was, and still is, at Step 6 in the English Football League Pyramid. This necessitated significant ground improvements, including the installation of state-of-the the-art floodlights. These improvements were supported suppo by grants from the Football Foundation’s Football Stadia Improvement Fund, the Hampshire Playing Fields Association, the Mike Ritchie Sports Fund and donations from club members. Over the period up to 2016/7, the club remained in Wessex League Division on 1, where its fortunes fluctuated. Its most successful season was 2010/11 when after losing eight of their first 11 games, it narrowly missed promotion, finishing third in the table.

The first club badge was a cockerel on a ball, and was the same as for Tottenham Hotspur FC, the one of the rising stars of English football at the time. The Fleet Spurs cockerel has altered over the years, notably a few seasons ago when the London club threatened legal action if the Fleet club didn’t change their logo. Financial might triumph, and a new logo was designed. The original club colours were black and white, similar to Tottenham’s navy & white. Subsequently, they changed to red and black stripes, like AC Milan, and eventually became the present red and blue. In 1951, Fleet Spurs FC joined the Aldershot and District League. They progressed through that and other local leagues, winning many honours along the way, notably becoming champions of the Aldershot Senior League four times. In 1991 they joined Hampshire League Division 3. By this time, they fielded three other Aldershot League teams - the Reserves and the A & B teams. Up until 1997, the club had played at various grounds in the Fleet area. In the 1997/8 season, they finally established a home at Kennels Lane in Southwood, part of neighbouring Rushmoor. At the same time, the

In 2017/18, Fleet Spurs moved into the Combined Counties League, remaining rema at Step 6. This move was instigated by the FA with the intention of helping the club and in particular having the effect of halving the average distance they had to travel to away games. Four seasons later, the FA switched Spurs back into the Wessex League as part of a much wider reorganisation of Step 5 and Step 6 football. The change of leagues ha as led to wholesale changes es in the club hierarchy, including the new joint managers, Scott Kemp and Suj Khera, are both UEFA B Licensed Coaches. PARKER 18, OSMAN 47, 47 WHITE 78

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street came from behind twice to pick up their first points of the new campaign, thanks to a hat-trick from Luke Hooper and further goals from Shane Lock and Ross Cook on his full debut. Infinity certainly had plenty of chances and will rue their missed opportunities; they however took the lead on 18 minutes through a Parker free-kick. The Street were a little fortunate not to be 2-0 down at the break after great defending by Lee Morris, the Street broke and Hooper scored to level on the stroke of half-time. The second half had barely started when Infinity re-took the lead thanks to a turn and shot that hit the post and went across the line from Osman. Street replied immediately through a Shane Lock header from a clever Ross Cook free-kick. And Cook himself gave Street the lead 3 minutes later when he finished a loose ball in the box after Hooper’s effort was blocked. Hooper would then take advantage of the Infinity defence to complete his hat-trick with two fine goals, the second a deft lob over the stranded keeper. There was still time for substitute Jamie White to score a consolation goal for Infinity when he tapped home in the 78th minute. www.ansfc.co.uk

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street came from two goals down to earn a point in a dramatic ending against Andover Town, which saw Town reduced to 10 men. Street made the better start with a Luke Hooper shot turned round the post by keeper Jack Hopwood, a Cameron Thatcher cross emphatically cleared for a corner and a handball claim turned down. Ben Emans bought Town in to the game with a couple of pacy runs and a shot that hit the inside of the far post and rebounded in to play, but after Street goalkeeper Chris Wing bravely saved a Michael Owen shot the home side went ahead on the ten minute mark. A corner, swung in from the left, was headed back in to the six yard box and Josh Bertie was the quickest to react and hooked the ball over the line.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Street bounced back with a fierce Ross Cook volley that was (painfully) blocked and two further efforts from the same player were saved by Hopwood, one with his legs. Hooper’s pace was troubling the Town defence and a Shane Lock cross was headed out of Hopgood’s hands by one of his own defenders before the lead was doubled after twenty six minutes. Wing collected a through ball and under little pressure whilst debating his clearance suddenly trod on the ball, fell over, and Michael Owen almost apologetically rolled the ball in to the empty net. Bertie just failed to make contact with a left wing cross and at the other end Hopwood fumbled a Hooper shot before bravely falling on the loose ball and then denying Cook again as the striker tried to find the far corner. As Street finished the half the strongest the home defence held firm, often with SMITHin87the way of the ball, and the half ended with bodies some superb control by Hooper and an equally superb save by Hopwood. Street came close to reducing the deficit when a home defender swung wildly at a Lloyd Thompson cross and was relieved to see the ball fly over his own crossbar. While Wing produced the save of the evening to turn a Tom Pattison pile driver over the bar. The game came bursting into life again with some six minutes left on the clock. Street made ground down the left, Cameron Thatcher burst into the area and simply kept running and slotted the ball past Hopwood from a narrow angle. There was then a scuffle and a red card for Primus with the referee indicating that he had stamped on an opponent. Normal time had given way to added time when New Street won a corner on the right. The kick cleared everybody and Ross Cook, all alone on the far side of the area, volleyed the ball through the crowd of defenders and attackers alike to find the net inside the far post and cause almost manic celebrations from the white shirted visitors.

CAM REFLECTS ON DERBY DRAW Street deservedly fought back from 2-0 down on Tuesday evening at local rivals Andover Town, with youngster Cameron Thatcher getting the Street back into the game with his first goal of the season in the 82 minute. The 17 year-old took his chance well, after collecting a delightful scooped pass from Ross Cook. Thatcher went on into the area before poking the ball past the on rushing keeper to find the net from a acute angel. The Street were not finished either as they attacked right until the final whistle and were rewarded when Ross Cook’s effort from the edge of the box found its way through the bodies into the corner of the net. For Thatcher it was no more than the team deserved and he was happy he was able to make a difference against our near neighbours. “I thought we played well, even when we were 2-0 down, we didn’t lose belief,” said the young midfielder. “We knew we had enough going forward to score goals in that second half and get something from the game.” Thatcher strengthened his grip on a regular starting line-up place, after breaking into the first team during pre-season and playing well in the FA Cup tie at Shepton Mallet. “I was obviously really happy to get my first goal for the first team and for it to be against Andover Town, but I would have been even more happy if we had won the game on Tuesday, but we take the point and move on to the next game at home.” “After my goal and the sending off, it really spurred us on to get that equaliser. They sat back during the second half and that allowed us to put

the pressure right on them and once we did that the chances started to come again.” again. Both Lloyd Thompson and a substitute Robbie Owen when close just after the Street goal but it was Ross Cook that provided the strike to earn the point. “Ross Ross has got that in his locker, to be fair it looked like it wasn’tt going to be his night as he had so many chances that hat were blocked or saved. But credit to him to kept at it and got the goal he so richly deserved.” And what about Cam’ss thoughts on the Street’s Street start to the season? “We We have started well, it was obviously ob a disappointing performance at Whitchurch, but we have done well since and reacted well. I think I’m I playing ok but I’m m always looking to improve. As long as we are winning then I’m I happy.”

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to the Street’s ’s debut in the FA Cup three years ago 4 THE BOSS11th August 2018 Andover New Street 4-0 Romsey Town

Danny Dolan looks ahead to today’s game

In their first season in the Wessex Premier the Street started off with a defeat away at Bashley in blistering temperatures and this was followed with a home defeat to Shaftesbury in a game that the Street felt they deserved at least a point. The FA Cup offered a welcome distraction from the poor league start and it was the first time that the club had entered the competition and John Smith’s men had to endure a tight and tense first half against a Romsey side high on confidence following their opening day win on the previous Saturday. The Street had already signalled their early intent to try and get behind the Romsey back four but the final ball was just lacking that bit of quality. Romsey were also playing some good football and created a couple of half chances that the Street defence dealt with. Then Zach Neve put the Street in front on 27 minutes with a fine finish past Jordan Westbrook in the Romsey goal. Romsey replied and should have perhaps been level on 35 minutes when a cross into the box from the right found Jack Odhambut the Romsey forward skewed his shot wide of the goal from 9 yards. They also tested George Baxter in the Street goal with a long range strike that zipped off the wet turf but Baxter got behind the shot to parry to safety. The Street doubled their lead after the interval on 57 minutes when Neve got his second when he twisted and turned the Romsey central defence before placing the ball past Westbrook into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

THE PROGRAMME The Street produced a 40-page programme, costing the usual £1, for the visit of Romsey. Naturally, manager John Smith, in his column was looking forward to managing the club in it’s first FA Cup match and calling it a massive game for both sides. There was detailed look at the Romsey side and there was the first introduction of the away fan interview, with Romsey supporter Tony Galsworthy in the hot seat. With it being the FA Cup, there was a Stats & Facts article supplied by @FACupFactfile, that looked at all the stats from the previous season’s FA Cup competition. Wessex One side Fawley were pointed out for being second in a list of clubs who have failed to go beyond the Extra Preliminary Round in any of their FA Cup campaigns.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT OUR TEN FAVORITE SOCCER GAMES EVER.... EVER 8

NEW STAR SOCCER

It's rare for a soccer game to be truly original, and yet New Star Soccer manages it. As you might be able to imagine from the title, New Star sees you create a footballer and play with them, dragging them up the rungs of the footballing ladder, while trying tryi not to get in too much trouble along the way. A bizarre, but compelling mix of RPG and sports sim, it's well worth a look, particularly as its a phone game.

10 ACTUA SOCCER

Developed by Sheffield-based team Gremlins Interactive, Actua Soccer was one of the most wellrounded soccer games ever, when it was released in 1995. For the first time in a home-console football game, there was a fully-3D graphics engine. Its gameplay was superb, featuring deep strategy and fantastic visuals, but perhaps most interestingly of all, it actually featured motion capture technology. Three players from Sheffield Wednesday - Chris Woods, Graham Hyde, and Andy Sinton - were brought in for just such a purpose. A very cool little game, all things considered.

7

KICK OFF 2

You know a game is good when nearly 30 years after its release, there are still annual tournaments held with it. Kick Off 2 is often held up as one of the finest soccer games ever made, and it's hard to argue with that. The game's graphics haven't aged well, wel but its gameplay is still sharp after all these years.

9

VIRTUA STRIKER

Little-remembered these days, Virtua Striker, from the developers of Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter, is hugely important in the history of soccer games. It was the first soccer game ever to use 3D player models, and boy did we love it. The arcade version had you competing in a tournament, alongside 16 other teams, desperately trying to make it through to the final. It wasn't complex, by any means, but it was incredible fun, and for those who'd grown up with top-down soccer games, incredibly realistic.

36

It's hard, but that's how a sports game should be, and when you can pull off sweet moves at the game's breakneck pace, you start to feel less like a mess and more like Messi. There are a huge variety varie of shots available, despite being played on a one-button one joystick. It's still well worth playing today if you want a blast from the past.

6

FEVER PITCH SOCCER

This game was absolutely barking mad. Taking a slapstick approach to soccer, teams could play super dirtily, or cleanly, depending on the squad. Each player also had access to special abilities, such as being able to dive to attempt to win a spot kick. You could take your pick from 51 national sides, and compete with up to four friends. Its mechanics mecha would be imitated in RedCard, which came out in 2002, but it would never be equalled.

5

WORLD CUP 98

The first World Cup game developed by EA, World Cup 98 showed us what sports games could be. The fact that every one of the French stadia got its own little cinematic intro, along with the 3D player graphics and accurate national kits, it was revolutionary at the time. The voice overs in the UK version of the game were starstudded, with commentary from John Motson and Chris Waddle, and match introductions by Des Lynam and Gary Lineker. It hasn't aged all that well, but it was the first of its kind and deserves recognition.

3

FIFA

The de facto king of modern football games, the FIFA series deserves its place this far up the list. Obviously, the gameplay is superb and gets continually refined every year, but it's more than that. The massive selection of modes, from "The Journey" to "House Rules" and "Ultimate Team," provide near endless replay value. The graphics are fantastic, while the multitude of licenses lic keeps the game as real as can be. If you want the bestbest looking, most developed soccer game, you go to FIFA.. Regardless, Pro Evo will always have a special place in my heart.

4

PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. If you grew up in the early 2000s, PES was the de facto football game for all true fans. Despite having some incredibly silly club names to get around licensing (ST Red for Stoke City, or West Midlands Village for Aston Villa, anyone?), it was incredibly tight, realistic, and challenging. That all changed when FIFA caught up. Thanks to FIFA's essential monopoly on licenses, the incredible phenomenon of "Ultimate Team," and countless improvements in gameplay, it can't keep up. Regardless, Pro Evo will always have a special place in my heart.

2

FOOTBALL MANAGER

The Football Manager series is where soccer gets very serious, indeed. The tactical depth available to coaches is absolutely bananas, letting you create your own tactics and prove yourself to be a revolutionary footballing mind or a total fool. The squad dynamics ynamics modeling means that if you upset too many players you're risking your job. The detail goes all the way down to pitch condition at tiny, minor league grounds. If you want to take the Metropolitan Police's team from the Southern League Premier Division South all the way to the Premier League, you can! Set training schedules, hire and a fire staff, scout players, arrange friendlies, negotiate with the chairman, there is essentially nothing that you can't do in these games.

In addition to this support, a Eagle IT Support engineer can also attend the customer’s premises and work directly on the PC, thereby identifying any potential issues.

1 SENSIBLE SOCCER

From serious to sensible, Sensible Soccer is still a fantastic game to this day, and, in our view, the greatest soccer game ever made. It's accessible, with ludicrously simple controls, yet a massive amount of depth. The gameplay is tense, yet hilarious. You fly around the pitch, and slide tackling is brutal! The shooting mechanics are absolutely wonderful, including an aftertouch mechanic that, once mastered, will be your best friend. What makes it so truly wonderful is its simplicity. There aren't any complexities. No distractions. Just pure soccer.

Pre-season season Predictions

By Edd Paul

The only problem with pre-season predictions in print is people remember them. Sometimes they even cut them out and keep them. Some get stuck on a dressing room wall and used to create motivation or a siege mentality. Of course, a correct pre-season prediction is worth its weight in gold. If you’ve delivered your tips in late July or early August and they come off by the end of April or May, then you can take your lap of honour. It’s part of the new season fun. Who has signed well? Who looks to have strong foundations from last season? Who might drop off? This season that has been harder than ever. The majority of Steps 3-6 didn’t kick a ball from November onwards last season, Step 2 stopped early, with just the National League’s top flight completing a full campaign. So it’s difficult to quite know how teams will come back. How players will return after missing so much competitive football. But, even when a full season has been completed, predictions are just that. Guess work! Because if we knew what would happen, then there wouldn’t be much point in all turning up every Saturday. The opening weeks are always fascinating. Most teams fancy their chances of having a special year, believing they can be the ones fighting it out even when no one else thinks they will be.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Just ask Sutton United. Not many expected Matt Gray’s side to be in the title race. Outsiders for a play-off off place? Sure. But not leading everyone else and lifting the championship. Yet, last week they were at Cardiff City in the EFL Cup as they embark on their first ever season in League football. It’s quite a story. And this season will throw up many more. Every league has its fancied sides, the big spenders who ‘should’ be in the mix. But every league will have some who come from nowhere, where everything ng falls into place and it they really do have the season of their lives. Like Hornchurch last season celebrating FA Trophy glory under the arch. There can’t have been anyone in the country who foresaw that happening. This weekend the Step 1 clubs are getting ge underway to make it a full Non-League Non house. The FA Cup is in full swing, crowds are up, goals are flying in. It feels almost normal again. There may be some bumps in the road this season, Covid hasn’t gone away and a glance across the fixture list shows the pandemic is still having an impact on postponements. But, after a long absence, it feels good to be inching back towards that routine. And the normality of all my predictions falling flat on their face by the end of September! Enjoy your game…

league look In Division One on Friday evening Follands proved too strong for old rivals Totton & Eling running out as 4-1 winners at Hamble Park, Clayd Roach with two, Joe Sutherden and Fabio Manuel for the Planemakers with Alex Sawyer claiming the Millers’ goal. At Fawley the game against Millbrook was abandoned in the last three minutes after a serious injury to the home side’s Mike McLeod and all wish him a speedy recovery. Much praise was expressed over the actions of the physios on the evening and it shows again the importance of having experienced people in that role. New Milton followed up their opening day win with three more points, Jack Dacombe and George Deem giving them a 2-0 victory at Ash United, and there were plenty of goals at Andover New Street. Strikes from Luke Hooper and Callum Parker made it all square at the break but in the second half Hooper completed his hat trick to add to goals from Shane Lock and Ross Cook while goals at the other end from Harry Osman and Jamie White left the final score as five three in Street’s favour. Goals also at Laverstock & Ford with the home side overwhelming Fleet Spurs 6-1. Russell Jones with two, Archie Lovegrove, James McSorley, Lewis Wakefield and Jordon Matthews with the six; Tom White for the visitors. Newport look as though they are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season as they completed a 4-1 win at Petersfield. Bailey Newbury notched the lone home goal whilst Joe Craig with two, Jacob Reynolds and Jordan Browne made it a happy ride home for the Islanders.

44

Downton were also six shooters on the day at Ringwood with the home side managing a single James Matthews goal in reply. The Robins scorers were Marcel Laptas(2), Paul Gulliver, Sam Howe, Josh Cummings and Tom Moseley. The Romsey versus Bemerton game was switched to Western Way where two goals from Eddie Perrett and one from Justin Bennett more than cancelled out a goal for Romsey – sadly the scorer is unknown. Verwood now proudly top the table on goal difference after adding four against visitors Whitchurch to the five they scored last week. Ollie Davies scored two with Nathan Gray and Matt Vining notching the others and George Bishop getting the Jamboys consolation. Confusion at Beatrice Avenue where East Cowes Vics and Andover were drawing 3-3 in second half stoppage time when the visitors Jordan Smith collapsed on the pitch causing a lengthy delay and the eventual apparent abandonment of the game though neither side seems too sure if that was the outcome. Jimmi Burton, Harri Catania and Toby Snow scored for the Vics with Josh Bertie getting two of the Andover goals, Something for the League to decide upon but the main thing is that the Andover player makes a rapid and full recovery.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN It was fitting that the sun shone on the opening day of the football season as clubs up and down the country welcomed fans back to their grounds. The familiar rituals of matchday may have been disrupted over the past 18 months, but the spectators soon slipped back into old habits – abusing the opposition, berating the referee, celebrating with gay abandon. In Stevenage, a club that has now shed almost all of the remnants of its non-league past, they played host to Barrow, whose followers had a 530-mile round trip to see their heroes. Stevenage have now been members of the English Football League since 2010, the 202122 season will be their 12th at that level. Towns like Stevenage are tailor-made for league football, but they have to overcome the hurdle of being close to London and the even more significant obstacle of legacy. When the new towns were built after the second world war, they acted as a filtering system of the inner-city population. Londoners moved to Basildon, Harlow and Stevenage and they took with them family links to the likes of West Ham, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal, among other clubs. Establishing a new generation of supporters takes time but Stevenage seem to have achieved that. When you see fans with their colours on neighbouring railway stations, you know you’ve made progress. The presence of EFL football in a town means something, not just in footballing terms, but in putting a pointer on the map. For example, who would have heard of Scunthorpe, Mansfield, Sutton or Walsall if it

50

were not for their football clubs? Stevenage is well known because of three things – it’s a stopping point for what we used to call InterInter City trains, it’s a new town and they have a football team. Of course, there’s plenty of other reasons for knowing about Stevenage, but for most people, these are the dominant indicators. It is fair to say Stevenage are now an established EFL club, but life can be a bit of a struggle. The pond they paddle in is far bigger than non-league, so their attendances are always at the bottom end of League Two. In fact, Stevenage could attract more people in their non-league league heyday, although today, crowds are about the same as they were in 1996-97. 97. Their stadium is an excellent example of a small, neat and uniform ground, with a modest but adequate capacity. The latest development, the north stand, offers a comfortable view of the action. The game itself was lively, rarely dull, but short on real quality and long on yellow cards (10 in total). Stevenage did enough to deserve the points, scoring a well-crafted well goal in the 48th minute, Reid dashing to the byline, crossing low and Reeves arrived to sweep the ball into the net. Reid almost added a second sec later but Farman, who played for Stevenage between 2018 and 2020, pulled off a good save. Victory, however narrow, was a satisfactory start for Stevenage, but for Barrow, it was a long way to come for no reward. For the interested observer, it was good goo – and a little strange – to see a stadium with fans enjoying themselves in the right way. It’s back!
