JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for this afternoon’s encounter against Folland Sports in Wessex League 1. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to manager Dave Herbert, his staff and players plus the committee and fans, who have made the journey to Andover today. Folland Sports have made an impressive start to the season with just one defeat in the league to Bemerton Heath Harlequins so far and they will be looking to build on their mid week win over Alresford Town in the Wessex League Cup
Happy I’d like to express how happy I am with the whole squad for their attitude, commitment and effort they apply to each game and the intensity that we play at. They are all listening to the instructions that myself, John and the back room staff are giving them and implementing it onto the pitch and reaping the rewards. The back four continue to be solid and reliable. The suspension of AP didn’t hurt us at all with Lewis Alderman coming into the side and making the centre back position his own with a number of solid performances recently. It certainly gives myself and John a selection headache.

“ALTHOUGH ALTHOUGH THE DEFEAT AT DOWNTON WAS DISSAPOINTING, IT WAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE SOME OF THE YOUNGER LADS AND ALSO SAW AW THE RETURN OF DANNY URRY IN A STREET SHIRT.”
Our last performance here against Petersfield and also the FA Vase match at Andover Town showed what we are capable of. Goals are flowing from all over the pitch and it was pleasing to see how well Daryll Phillips has settled into the side with his hat-trick at the Portway. Although our defeat at Downton on Tuesday night was disappointing, it gave us the opportunity to watch some of the younger lads and also saw the return of Danny Urry in a Street shirt. Welcome back Dan! He nearly capped it off with an equaliser in the second half but unfortunately he got too much of a good connection on his header and it went straight at the keeper. I have mentioned before the importance of your support at our matches, we certainly need it this afternoon as we come up against one of the early contenders for promotion. Get behind us once more today and let’s hope for the three points that will bring us right into the promotion mix. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM
WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD
I would like to wish all supporters a warm welcome back to our Foxcotte Park home this afternoon. It seems like ages ago since we played Petersfield Town here and produced another fine display. This was followed with a great win and performance against Andover Town in the Vase. We simply didn’t allow Town in the game and were dominant from start to finish. Today we look to produce another performance like the ones mentioned above and also put behind us our defeat at Downton on Tuesday night in the League Cup. It was a very poor first half from us and I’m sure the players will be looking to put things right this afternoon but it won’t be easy against one of the inform sides in the league.
6
The Planemakers come here today five points ahead of us, although we do have a game in hand . If ever there was a game best described as a six-pointer then it’s the game here today. Our defence will face a stern test this afternoon with the League top scorer Clayd Roach in their ranks. He has scored 16 goals in just 9 starts in all competitions so will be a real threat to us this afternoon. Our win over Andover Town has presented us with another away trip in the Vase this time to Cribbs FC, who play in the Hellenic Premier League and are based near Bristol. We will be taking a coach to the game and if you are interested in supporting the side then get in touch with the club for details. Our Swifts side have continued their fine start to the season with three wins out of three in the league and today they travel to Hook in the League Cup. Hook are another side, who are unbeaten in the league so it promises to be a hard game for both sides this afternoon.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT
It’s good to be back in league action as welcome Folland Sports to Foxcotte Park for an important fixture in the Wessex League One.
“THE MANAGEMENT TEAM WERE ABLE TO UTILISE MOST OF THE SQUAD. THAT’S A SIGN OF HOW MUCH QUALITY WE HAVE AT THIS CLUB.”
We have come through a couple of tough matches in the past few weeks and we progressed to the First Round of the FA Vase for the first time in the clubs history. The defeat against Downton on Tuesday was disappointing but the management team were able to utilise most of the squad. That’s a sign of how much quality we have at this club.
Tough Matches Ahead Today’s match with Folland Sports starts a run of tough matches ahead for us, with our rearranged trip to Fawley on Wednesday, quickly followed with another away trip to Laverstock & Ford. We need to continue to work hard and that’s something I hope is evident to everyone watching our matches. We have begun to start matches on the front foot and put the opposition under pressure from the first whistle.
mistakes but it is at those times in which we need your backing the most, so I urge you all to encourage us – especially our younger lads – as much as possible because honestly it does make a massive difference.
As I’ve mentioned in my previous notes, we are still in the early stages of a long hard season and we know that there is a long way to go But we will be making sure we are in the promotion mix come the end of the season. We are a very level-hea headed bunch and I know that there will be plenty of ups and downs before the season comes to an end. We have got ourselves into a great position through sheer endeavour and teamwork and we must not allow our standards to slip. I have mentioned before, the gaffers are going to have one big selection headache when everyone is available. Please get behind us this afternoon.. afternoon. Enjoy the game.
As we go into today’s game it’s important to remember we have a young group of players who need your support. Sometimes we will make

welcome FOLLAND SPORTS
It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Folland Sports Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Planemaker’s make the journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time since September 2019 when the Street eased to a 6-1 victory. This afternoon’s match promises to be a much closer encounter with Folland Sports making an impressive start to the season with just one defeat so far this season. Planemaker’s manager Dave Herbert will be looking for a vast improvement from his side following their relegation from the Wessex Premier at the end of the 2015-16 season. For the next three seasons the club struggled near the bottom of the division. This current season, however, they got off to the best possible start with a 2-1 victory away at Downton with Matt Casey and current league topscorer Clayd Roach getting off the mark. This was followed with a 4-1 home win over Totton & Eling with Roach getting a brace and Joseph Sutherden and Fabio Manuel completing the scoring.
14
Further league victories against Romsey Town and Verwood Town followed before the Planemakers were defeated 4-2 4 by Andover Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup. Cup A 3-1 away win against Andover Town in the league and then an emphatic 6-0 0 home victory over Wessex Premier Hythe & Dibden in the League Cup with Roach scoring 4 of the goals. Lowly Fleet Spurs were then defeated at Folland Park thanks to a Roach hat-trick h and a lone Sutherden goal. A 1-0 0 home defeat to Corsham Town in the FA Vase was then followed with their first league defeat at fellow promotion contenders Bemerton Heath Harlequins with Matt Casey scoring the Planemakers consolation goal in a 4-1 4 loss. The Planemakers got back to winning ways in their last league game witha 3-0 3 victory over Petersfield Town. Fabio Manuel got the first goal on 18 minutes with Matt Casey quickly getting the second, two minutes later. Casey scored the third in the second half. On Tuesday evening the Planemakers got back to winning ways with a comprehensive 5-1 5 victory against Alresford Town in the Wessex League Cup.

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street recorded their 5th win in 7 league matches after a well earned 7-1 victory over Petersfield Town. The first goal came from a Danny Field through ball, down the inside right channel and Shane Lock beat the advancing keeper on 18 minutes. A second goal for Lock came in the 37th minute, when he outpaced a defender on the left touchline and avoided the out rushing keeper and skilfully steered the ball into the unguarded net from a narrow angle. The Street ended the half with a third goal, when Lock played the ball inside the left full back for Reece Rusher to slot home. The second half saw Lock turn provider for Mikey Davis to finish low into the far corner on 56 minutes it 4-0, but Petersfield continued to press and were rewarded when Max Paddon split the home defence and rounded O’Brien to score. There was then a goal rush in the final 5 minutes of the game with substitute Josh Jeffery supplying excellent crosses for Lock to complete his hat-trick on 87 minutes and then Thompson scored a minute later. The rout was completed in the final minute when Jeffery scored to cap a fine performance. www.ansfc.co.uk

WHAT’S THE STORY? Daryll Phillips scored a hat-trick on his debut as the Street produced a dominant display that ensured the club reached the 1st Round of the FA Vase at the expense of local neighbours Andover Town. The game was just 28 seconds old when Phillips picked up a loose pass in the Andover Town half and drove past the Town defender before finishing low into the corner. The Street went on to create further chances with Mikey Davis missing a great opportunity when 1v1 with the Town keeper. Just 4 minutes into the second half and the Street doubled their advantage. Skipper Matt Scott powered a header towards goal from a Reece Rusher corner, which was blocked but the loose ball was powered home by Davis. Phillips then scored a couple of minutes later, when he collected a pass from Shane Lock and curled a delightful shot around the defender and into the top corner. And the hat-trick was completed when he got onto a long clearance from Scott and deftly lobbed the keeper from 18 yards, which bounced in off the crossbar. DEBUT TO REMEMBER FOR PHILLIPS New signing Daryll Phillips didn’t wait too long to make an impact on his debut against Andover Town in the FA Vase when he struck after 28 seconds to give the Street an early lead. The former Winchester City, Alresford Town, Brockenhurst, AFC Stoneham and Tadley Calleva player was surprised to be starting the game, with the Street management making a late decision to include the striker from the start. “It’s got to be the best debut I’ve made ever.” said Phillips to Word on the Street. “First game in and I didn’t expect to start, then topping it off with a hat-trick in the local derby, but more importantly we got the win and on to another round in the FA Vase. It’s got to be my best hat-trick ever, just for the fact it was my debut, against the clubs local rivals, in the Vase. Plus they weren’t bad finishes, even if I do say so myself.” The striker had no hesitation in joining the Street as Phillips explained. “It’s a club I’ve always seemed to keep an eye out for over the years and I nearly joined last season when I had a chat with Football Chairman John Ward before deciding to stay on at Alresford Town. I just think the club have always had a great squad and management.
Also the people behind the scenes have done a lot of improvements around the club and their ambitious so it was an easy decision for me in the end.” “I’ve ’ve settled in really fine, they are all top lads and made me feel really welcomed and an I knew the likes of Scotty and Reece from my time at Winchester City. I also know Paddy, Macca and Ross from when I played at Tadley Calleva. Calle And the likes of Locky and Pearson I knew from the Wessex League circuit.” And even though Phillips has only been with the squad a few weeks, he can see the potential of the squad and predicts a successful season. “II think we have a great chance of promotion. We have a great squad of players and are usually in and around the promotion places by April. The lads have started the season great and I hope I can help p as much as I can. You just have to keep pushing right until the death. Obviously there are a few good sides in the league that have started well, but we just have to keep winning games and digging out results no matter how you win them.” them Phillips certainly brings a lot of experience to the side having played for a number of sides in and around the Wessex League. “I’m 34 so looking at the squad I’m m one of the oldest. Like they say age is just a number and I still like to think I can do my part in the side.” side

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street endured a narrow defeat in the League Cup at Downton on Tuesday. The Street made a couple of changes to their starting line-up with Michael Weatherall making his debut in goal and also starting were Joe Rogers in central midfield and Josh Jeffery on the right wing.
MOMENTS
The first half saw Downton create the better chances and Weatherall had to be alert to make several routine saves. Street had strong claims for a penalty mid way through the half when Michael Davis appeared to have his shirt pulled back when running through the penalty area.
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?
Downton took the lead 5 minutes before half-time when skipper Matt Scott was adjudged to have fouled TJ Mosley, which saw the Robins striker leave the field with a suspected dislocated shoulder and Sam Howe curled a strike into the top corner.
The Street produced a better performance in the second half but ultimately failed to convert any of them, with sub Reece Rusher striking a post and fellow sub Danny Urry heading straight at the keeper from six yards. The Street also had another strong penalty claim rejected in the second half but in the end it was the Robins that go into the next round.

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to a previous clash with Folland Sports in 2017 17.
Andover New Street 2-1 Folland Sports 12th September 2017 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by a heavy defeat at Romsey and a narrow exit of the FA Vase at Tadley Calleva. The distraction of the League Cup gave manager John Smith the opportunity to give some of the fringe players a start wityh Nic Turpin making a rare start up-front. Fellow League One side Folland Sports were the visitors under the Foxcotte Park floodlights. The Planemakers were struggling near the foot of the table with 4 points from their opening 6 matches. Street started the game well and Turpin perhaps should have done better when he blasted wide in the opening minute with just the keeper to beat. The Street continued to create chances with Zac Hine, Jazz Beavis and Gunner Yates all going close to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

The Street scored two goals in each half as they overcame Bedhampton Village in their latest Hampshire League Two fixture. TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 FOOTBALL FILMS.... 10 MARADONA (2019)
It was a cinematic marriage made in heaven. Volatile Argentina football legend Diego Maradona opening up his life for equally mercurial Serbian director Emir Kusturica, who followed the Pibe de Oro across Buenos Aires in this enthralling documentary. The filmmaker could be accused of getting a little too close to his subject; the mutual understanding between the two temperamental artists at times grates, as Kusturica willfully glosses over the less savoury details of Diego's life in favour of presenting the myth. But he is redeemed by some truly brilliant scenes.
9 FOOTBALL FACTORY (2004)
Not all football films deal with what happens inside the pitch. Some of the most popular titles of the last few years prefer to highlight the dark side of our game: the hooligans. Enter The Football Factory, based on John King's novel, a dystopian interpretation of the Chelsea firm full of petty theft, cocaine abuse and casual racism. The film charts Danny Dyer's descent into a state of extreme paranoia after an unfortunate encounter with the family of Tamer Hassan, head of the hooligan outfit for bitter rivals Millwall. The movie closes with a brutal pitched battle arranged before a ChelseaMillwall cup clash, and a rendition of The Jam's "Going Underground" is the perfect way to end any film.
8 ESCAPE TO VICTORY (1981)
It might not be the most polished piece of film ever to grace the big screen, but Escape to Victory provides plenty of enjoyment to those willing to suspend their
36
disbelief somewhat. The plot sees Caine play the role of a British POW and former professional footballer, roped into organising an exhibition game against the guards, which quickly turns into a publicity stunt for the German authorities. Against all odds, the ragtag side, bolstered by the inclusion of Pele and most of the Ipswich Town first-team squad of the early 1980s, come back from 41 down to secure an agonising draw. Not only that, but the heroes take advantage of a pitch invasion at the final whistle to escape their captors' clutches, Stallone provoking madness with a frankly improbable save that keeps the game level. Unmissable.
7
MEAN MACHINE (2001)
6
LOOKING FOR ERIC
Taking broadly the same premise as Escape to Victory, Mean Machine changes the setting from a POW camp to a grim, modern British prison for this Vinnie Jones vehicle. In this remake of American football flick The Longest Yard, Jones plays a former England captain who is haunted by allegations of match-fixing as his career went into a tailspin. An assault on a police officer leads to him being banged up alongside convicts who resent his betrayal and champagne lifestyle, but he finds redemption after being roped in to coach his inmate friends against the guards. From that point it's fairly predictable, underdog-comes-through-to-win fare we've seen in millions of sports movies, but the journey and the ragtag characters of the prison keep the action light-hearted and energetic. Watch out for Jason Statham, who adopts an almost unintelligible Scottish accent to play the team's unhinged, martial artsobsessed goalkeeper with a grudge.
(2009)
This Ken Loach film is not so much about what happens on the pitch, rather an essay on the nature of fanaticism itself and how the game provides an escape from the drudgery of regular life. Cantona-obsessed Eric Bishop slowly watches his life fall apart as he contends with a dead-end job, a strained relationship with his ex-wife and a son who appears to be slipping further under the wing of a local drug baron. The turning point, however, comes after smoking his boy's marijuana, when he sees the Gallic genius turn up and start to give him advice. The film is gritty and escapist at the same time, and the ex-Manchester United legend's superbly hammy acting lights up the screen with every appearance.
5
ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTUARY PORTRAIT (2006)
As arguably the greatest French player in football history, it was perhaps inevitable that Zinedine Zidane would sooner or later be given the documentary treatment in his home nation. The result in A 21st Century Portrait, however, is far from a one-sided adoration of the ex-Real Madrid star. Zidane reduces the story of his subject to just a single game in his career, a Liga clash against Villarreal in 2005, where the midfielder was sent off for his part in a brawl. Zizou is followed around for every minute of the match by 17 synchronised cameras, and the filmmakers achieve a breathtakingly austere portrait of the player, captured on camera like never before. Add to these glorious visuals an understated acoustic soundtrack prepared by Mogwai, and you have a powerful piece of arthouse cinema that is well worth a look.
3
FEVER PITCH (1997)
2
THE DAMNED UNITED
Many critics hold up this study of an Arsenal fan whose life revolves around his club as an exemplary study into the phenomenon enomenon of middle-class middle fanaticism, as events in the last 20 years have forced football to diversify from its traditionally working base. Fever Pitch, based on Nick Hornby's book of the same name, follows Paul as he juggles a job as a teacher and a newlynewly blossoming relationship with his love for the Gunners that paralyses him on matchdays. The action culminates with Paul watching his beloved team take on Liverpool in the last game of the season, mirroring the final in 1989 when the London club struck to win in the title in injury time. It's a gripping, enthralling film, not to be confused with a dreadful remake starring Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore that moves the focus to Boston and the Red Sox.
(2009)
4
THE GOAL! TRILOGY
(2005, 2007, 2009)
This 300-minute marathon could well be dubbed the Lord of the Rings of professional football. Across three films, Goal! charts the story of Santiago Munez, a Mexican immigrant living in Los Angeles who works as a gardener but dreams of making the most of his outrageous talents on the pitch. His dreams come true when he wins the opportunity of a trial with Newcastle United, and while he struggles with the rain and cold of the British North East, Munez slowly makes a name for himself in his adopted nation. There are plenty of slowmotion moments and plenty of agonising last-minute goals, as Santi earns Newcastle a place in the Champions League, proving his worth. The next films see a move to Real Madrid, an appearance at the World Cup finals and, as the title probably suggests, no shortage of goals, goals and more goals. The trilogy will not be showing up on any critics' shortlists, but global takings of over $35 million for the first two films alone prove that football can bring in the audiences.

Legendary English manager Brian Clough is remembered almost as much for his volatile, eccentric temperament as he is for his brilliance from the bench. The Damned United tries to capture both sides of the late ex-Nottingham Nottingham Forest and Derby County trainer, focusing on one of the darkest eras of Cloughie's career. The film tells the story of the 44 days Clough spent as manager of Leeds United in 1974, an era that has gone down as one of the most infamous, controversial spells in football history. Already an unpopular figure with the Elland Road players and fans, the he new manager's methods and abrasive personality led to almost open warfare in the dressing room, before he was sacked just over a month into his stay. Michael Sheen is a force of nature in the main role, exposing Clough's insecurities and bluster as he struggled against the tide in his new club while keeping his human side intact. Other were not so happy: Dave Mackay sued the producers over what he saw as an inaccurate portrayal in the film.

1 MIKE BASSETT: ENGLAND MANAGER
A clever piece of cinema that revels in subverting the usual expectations of underdog sports movies. Mike Bassett tells the story of an uncouth, foul-mouthed lower league coach who finds himself in England's top job, and all hell breaks loose as he prepares them for the World Cup. A comedy of errors ensues as the protagonist, played by a perfectly-cast Ricky Tomlinson, goes from disaster to disaster at the helm. Whether its calling up two useless midfielders Benson and Hedges, due to a confusion stemming from a team list written on the back of a cigarette packet, or the star of the team getting romantically involved with a Brazilian transexual, nothing can go right for the hapless manager. There is redemption at the end. England do not win the World Cup, but a respectable defeat to Brazil in the semi-final restores Bassett's reputation and ensures his family can once more leave the house without being abused and pelted with fruit. The manager comes home with his head held high and changes his previous decision to resign in favour of staying with the Three Lions.
Travellers’ EDITOR KEVIN PIPKIN WAS ON THE ROAD AGAIN ON TUESDAY...HERE’S WHAT HE MADE OF OUR TRIP TO DOWNTON...
TALES
DOWNTON ● TUESDAY 5th OCTOBER 2021 THE JOURNEY A midweek trip to Downton doesn’t sound that bad but when you are working in Sutton Scotney and trying to get back in time for a lift it can become a manic rush.. After leaving Sutton Scotney at 5pm, I manage to get back to Andover before 5:30 so I can get picked up by JC and Thomo and make our way to Downton. We make great progress and even have time to stop off at the petrol station for a drink before we arrive at the already busy car park at 6:15pm. THE GROUND Downton have made a number of improvements to their ground over the last couple of years. This season see’s a scoreboard near the entrance and also their new refurbished clubhouse, which I enter after the game for an after match drink. There is also a container that has been turned into a programme shop, which has a vast amount of programmes from not just Downton but across the Wessex League and beyond. As for the ground there is one stand for seating on the half-way line opposite the dugouts THE FOOD The refreshment kiosk offered hot or cold drinks, as well as the usual burgers and hot food. I didn’t get a chance to take a look at the selections on offer and what the prices were like but the queues were quite long at half-time so it looked like they were making great business.
40
THE PROGRAMME A 28 page full colour programme is on offer for the usual £1. There is a nice welcome message for the Street from the club Chairman and there is the club history and a nice article looking at the Toolstation Western League. THE MATCH A slow start by Street see’s see Downton take the lead after a disputed free-kick free and the officials have a poor game, which is commented on by both sets of supporters. Street perform better in the second half but can’tt find the equaliser despite hitting the post and d having a clear penalty turned down! MAN-OF-THE-MATCH Cameron Thatcher made a difference to our performance when he came on at half-time half and was hands down the best player in the green and black on Tuesday. He maintained possession and kept us pushing forward. forward

Premier Non-League League
By Sam Emery
Recreation Ground, Aldershot. Circa 2001-02 season. I had made my way pitchside, waiting for Aldershot Town manager George Borg to emerge back from the tunnel for post-match interviews. Behind me were two young boys, aged between four and seven I’d say, kicking a football between them on the pitch (don’t tell the groundsman, I’m not sure they were allowed). I knew at the time one of the lads (the younger one I think) to be the son of Stuart Cash, the Aldershot Town assistant manager. He had come along with his Mum to cheer on Dad from the directors’ box – I’m guessing his first football memory. That young boy is now, of course, Matty Cash, Aston Villa’s talented young right-back, signed from Nottingham Forest for a cool £16 million just over 12 months ago. These days, having helped Terry Brown guide AFC Wimbledon into the Football League, Stuart is enjoying the lap of luxury at Premier League grounds up and down the country following his son in a similarly proud show of family loyalty and support. Matty’s plight to the very top got me thinking about players who were brought up in the NonLeague way. Yes, there’s the Jamie Vardys, Andre Grays and Nick Popes of this world who earned big moves to the top, but how about those with a professional grounding but nurtured off-the-field from a grassroots background.
It was there where Tyrone was spotted by then Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy, who spent £10,000 to bring him to the Championship. The rest, as they say, is history. Adie later followed his son into the Premier League and is now a scout cout at Chelsea. And how about one of the top-flight’s top newest stars, Crystal Palace’s Conor Gallagher? He is the youngest of four brothers with his siblings all having played at Non-League League level. Jake Gallagher, 28, enjoyed a solid career at the likes of Welling elling United, Aldershot Town and Dorking Wanderers, while twin brother Josh served a number of clubs at Steps 3 and 4, such as Staines Town, Met Police, Leatherhead and Farnborough. Third brother Dan, 24, is currently at Dorking Wanderers. It’s groundings such as these which have completely changed the perception of NonNon League football from the upper echelons over the years. No longer is life outside the professional game seen as a poor relation, a kick-and-rush kick fest played on a quagmire of a pitch, it’s now n a hotbed of playing and managerial talent with a refreshing purity about it. And if it hadn’t have been for the lure of NonNon League and grassroots football then perhaps young Matty Cash might never have got his clear passion for the game.
Indeed, Matty doesn’t have to look far to see that he’s in good company. His Aston Villa teammate Tyrone Mings is another taught the Non-League way from his father Adie, who spent six years in charge at Chippenham Town. www.ansfc.co.uk

league look For the first time this season the weather played a major role, probably the major role, in the day’s proceedings with the incessant rain causing nine matches to be postponed and three abandoned across the two Divisions. In the Premier Division the matches at Amesbury, Cowes, Hythe & Dibden and US Portsmouth were postponed while those at Christchurch, Hamble Club and Horndean started before falling victims of the weather. Just three games were completed with a surprise score line at AFC Stoneham. The home side are capable of beating anyone on their day but to score six against Fareham, who have been scoring goals almost for fun themselves, was a very creditable victory. Callum Laycock (2), Ben Clarke, Scott Hills, Diego Romero and an own goal made up the six with Archie Wilcox getting a consolation for the Creeksiders. There was always going to be a game at Alton on the 3G surface and the home side took advantage with a 3-1 defeat of visitors Bashley. George Bowerman, Ed Dryden and Dylan Riley on target for the Brewers with the Bashley reply coming from Lewis Ross. Alresford made the long cross-country trip to Shaftesbury and recorded their second win of the season, coming out on top by the odd goal in three. Louis Russell and George Winser claiming the visitors’ goals and Cameron Beard on target for the Rockies. In the abandoned matches AFC Portchester were four up at Christchurch when play was halted early in the second half, Hamworthy United had scored five without reply at Hamble Club at the half time finish while Horndean were leading Blackfield & Langley by the odd goal in three when the game finished just before the hour mark.
44
In Division One four games ran their course and East Cowes Vics lead the evening’s parade with a best of seven goals success at Ash United. Vics were 4-0 up at one stage and probably in something approaching seventh heaven through goals from Jimmi Burton (2), Ryan Gregory and Harri Catania before the home side fought back as Jake Wilson, Luke Roper and Jake Ochiltree took the score to 4-3 (and they missed a penalty at 4-1!). Laverstock & Ford also scored four against visitors Verwood Town courtesy of goals from Lewis Barr, Dom Jackson, Jake Rawkins and Jim Ward with the Potters failing to trouble the scorers.
Archie Lovegrove and Jake Rawkins celebrate against Verwood Town
Petersfield recorded their second win of the campaign with a 3-1 success over Millbrook at Love Lane, two goals from Brandon Jewell and one for Jake Bourton against a lone strike from Ben Baddams, and just one goal in the final game. Liam Magee’s late effort giving Romsey the three points at Whitchurch. The postponed matches were at Andover Town, Downton, Fawley, Fleet Spurs (who had arranged to play at Fleet Town) and Ringwood. No changes at the top and bottom of either Division, and our thanks to all for the efforts put in on what was a very inclement day.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN Our heroes are being taken away from us with alarming speed. Those icons of the bubble gum card era are disappearing one-by-one. The 1966 World Cup winning squad has been decimated in recent years, Jimmy Greaves, the finalist that never was, has now gone, passing into football history as arguably the greatest natural goalscorer of his or any other era.
party, but deep down, the fan in him would have been rejoicing. Sir Alf Ramsey had his reasons – England with Greaves had laboured a little through the group stages, drawing 0--0 with Uruguay and winning 2-0 0 against Mexico and France. The 1966 World Cup film, “Goal”, scripted by Brian Glanville, had pointed out that Greaves was “allergic to World Cups”.
Greaves and 1966 is a story that will be told for years to come. In fact, with his passing, there may be more light thrown on the subject. Greaves was the golden boy of his time, a remarkable footballer who was copied by every schoolboy in the 1960s – “who do you think you are, Jimmy Greaves?” – a goal machine for Chelsea, Tottenham and England before bowing out at West Ham, disillusioned and in physical decline.
Ironically, given he died on the day that Spurs and Chelsea met in the Premier League, he made his bow at White Hart Lane as a 17 year-old. old. The game ended 1-1 1 and Greaves netted towards the end with a trademark goal. The plaudits poured on the spiky-haired Chelsea youngster – his poise, control and intelligent use of the ball were all highlighted. Greaves, meanwhile, was modest about his first game: “I didn’t think I had a particularly good game”. The Times “football correspondent”, was impressed, however: “Greaves may have a rich future”. How right he was.
It says a lot about the standing of Greaves that his absence from the 1966 World Cup final is just as discussed as Geoff Hurst’s hattrick or that other tale from that glorious few weeks in London, the disappearing trophy and the dog – Pickles – that found 12 inches of gold in a hedge.
In four seasons at Chelsea, a poor Blues side to be fair, he scored 132 goals in 169 games, a goals-per-game game ratio of 0.78 – a figure he never bettered at any other club. The year after he left for AC Milan, Mi Chelsea were relegated, Greaves had been the only reason they hadn’t faltered earlier.
In modern times, the squad game ethic would have compensated Greaves, maybe 20 minutes as substitute against West Germany, but back in 1966, there was no option. When the team photos were taken with the trophy, it was 11 in red sitting proudly with the Jules Rimet in Bobby Moore’s hands. Greaves’ expression as England won was clearly of a man who was crestfallen at not being at the
After spells at AC Milan, Spurs and West Ham, he e returned in the 1980s to co-host co the TV show, Saint & Greavsie with Ian St. John and became even more popular than he had been in his playing days. His brave battle against alcoholism also won the hearts of the people. To many experts, Jimmy Greaves was the greatest st goalscorer ever produced by England.
