THE MANAGER

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for this afternoon’s game against our visitor’s Folland Sports.

I’d like to welcome the Platemaker’s management team, their staff, players and all officials and supporters who have made the journey to Andover this afternoon. Follands are a club, who have struggled over the past few seasons before last season’s impressive run that saw them lose out to Newport IOW in the Play Off Semi Final like ourselves. This season they have shown what they are capable of when they beat Newport IOW 3 1 on the island and beating current league leaders New Milton Town 2 1. They have also suffered draws with Romsey Town and East Cowes and come into this game on the back of a 1 0 defeat to Hamworthy Rec.

However, the Platemaker’s have always been a tough opposition for us, and I expect nothing different this afternoon. We will need to be at our absolute best to get a positive result.

We come into this game on the back of two away league victories against Millbrook and Fleet Spurs.

The Millbrook game was a very frustrating one as the opposition made it very difficult for us to break them down, especially when they went down to 10 men. We went about our business and went in front just before half time thanks to Alex Dockree’s goal. We continued to press for that crucial second goal but had to wait until late on when Josh Moore cut inside to finish well.

The momentum followed us down to Fleet Spurs again where we were again resilient on Tuesday night It wasn’t the most enjoyable 90 minutes, but we got the job done and three more points that put us in a great position in second place in the league

Please give it everything you’ve got from stands. We’ve had plenty to cheer in recent years and we all feed off each other here, which I know we will be doing again this afternoon as we set about making Foxcotte Park a fortress it usually is.

Enjoy the game.

Action from a previous meeting with Folland Sports in October 2021. Ross Cook turns to celebrate his late, late winner and his third goal of the afternoon. After taking an early lead, the Street had to come from behind twice. Cook’s winner coming in the 2nd minute of injury time.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

WITH MATT BADCOCK – NLP

There would have been a lot of smiling faces at Boreham Wood on Monday night when Sorba Thomas came off the Wales bench to make his World Cup debut.

It's the latest chapter in a remarkable rise for the former National League attacker, who is now starring in the Championship for Huddersfield Town.

It wasn't all that long ago the 23 year old was one of Wood's most important players having come through their academy he regularly returns to give talks to the next generation of hopeful young footballers.

"I genuinely think there is a fine line between arrogance and confidence," Garrard told me last week. "If you're an elite athlete you've got to walk along that line. Sorba does that. He has the confidence in his ability and the arrogance to deliver on it. You see that in his game. That's why he's got his call up for Wales.

"He's got Premier League pace. We've always spoken about that. And he's added to his game, hugely. With us he was always developing. We got him on the coaching side of things so his off the field stuff the tough conversations dropping players in the U19s, people knocking on his door because they're not playing on a Wednesday, these are things he grew off the pitch which definitely helped him grow on the pitch.”

Of course, there are plenty of other former Non League players at this World Cup. Thomas' team mate Kieffer Moore turned the game in Wales' favour when he came off the bench. The striker, now in the Premier League, played for Truro City and Dorchester Town before other spells at Forest Green and Torquay United on loan.

He also represented England C in an International Challenge Trophy game against Estonia.

There are players in the Wales squad who have played Non League like Joe Morrell (Sutton and Margate) and Tom Lockyer, who won promotion with Bristol Rovers. In the full England squad, Nick Pope began at Isthmian League Bury Town. Jordan Pickford had loan spells at Alfreton Town and Darlington, while Callum Wilson turned out for Tamworth and Kettering Town. Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo played on loan for Bath City in 2018.

In recent years we've seen many more examples of players learning their trade in Non League and landing on world football's biggest stages. There is more than one route to the top.

As Garrard adds: "Iliman was at Marseille as a kid, didn't really make it, and was trying to find somewhere to go before he came to us. Sorba was released by West Ham. There are success stories."

THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW

The big game in Division One ended in a surprise score line, if not result, with New Milton Town winning 4 0 at leaders Downton thanks to two goals from Charlie Turner, and singles from Elliot Lines and Ben Cooper, we hear that Linnets’ Callum Butler suffered a bad knee injury, that saw him have to be stretchered off not long before the end hopefully, it is not as severe as a similar injury last season, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Of equal significance was Petersfield’s visit to Newport and a 2 1 victory in what was only the Island side’s second home defeat of the season. Goals from Archie Greenough and Connor Hoare pushed the victors very much in to the top five with Connor Kelly’s goal not enough for the Port.

Andover New Street, still unbeaten, won 2 0 at Millbrook thanks to a goal in each half from Alex Dockree and Josh Moore, with the home side not helping themselves with their lack of discipline, finishing the game with nine men.

Follands were another of the leading sides to lose on the day, a single goal from James King giving Hamworthy Recreation victory at Hamble, while Andover Town stayed in touch with a 5 0 defeat of near neighbours Amesbury Town. A hat trick from Jake Watson added to singles from Ryan Griffiths and Ben Emans making up the nap hand.

Ash United’s long journey to Verwood proved fruitless with goals from Kieran Burpitt, Sam Farndell and Joe Smith giving the home side a 3 0 success while there was a second consecutive away win for Fleetlands, 3 1 at Romsey, whose poor spell continues, Jamie Winter, Jamie Wrapson and Dale Mason on the scoresheet after Toby Gibson had netted the opener for the hosts.

No goals at Totton & Eling and a good point for East Cowes Vics but a double for Pat Correia gave Ringwood a best of three goals win over Fawley for whom Dec Hartigan was on target.

Fleet Spurs trailed 1 0 at the interval and conceded six more at home to Whitchurch for whom new signing Brett Denham marked his debut by scoring six of the goals, four coming in a ten minute second half spell we hear. The other coming from Johnie Gurney opening his Jam Boys account. Denham was a regular marksman for Tadley Calleva over many seasons in the Wessex League and could be very much a shrewd signing.
