welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

So, here we are; the Play-Offs. Don’t you just love (and hate them? We look forward to tonight’s and hopefully Saturday’s pulsating, nail-biting matches which will determine whether we go on our holidays celebrating or drowning our sorrows. A warm welcome, especially to our visitors, Laverstock & Ford, who arrive here on a tremendous run. After the result on Saturday and getting back from the Island, I was given the news that Word on the Street have been awarded “Programme of the Year” for League One for the second successive year, which is a massive achievement. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to the programme. It would not be possible to fill each issue without the help from columnists Jamie for his manager notes, John on boardroom notes duty; John Gorman for his excellent match reports; Neil Jensen for his back page thoughts; the Non-League Paper for their column every week and Andy Ormerod for his excellent photography. Finally, massive thanks to you, the supporters, for giving your feedback and continuing to read it. See you back here in late July! Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for what promises to be a thrilling climax to the 2021-22 Wessex League One campaign. Of course, we hope it’s not the last match of the season for us and that we’ll be preparing for another one on Saturday – but we have plenty of work to do to make that a reality. For the third time this season we face Laverstock & Ford, and I’d like to welcome everyone who has travelled across from Wiltshire for this play-off semi-final this evening. That goes for supporters, officials, manager Liam McConnell, his staff and squad. Whatever the outcome, I wish them a safe journey back later on tonight.

Confident We made the long journey to the island on Saturday with the belief that we could not only get the right result at East Cowes but also Andover Town could get a result at Bemerton. Despite the result at Moon Park not going our way and missing out on top spot by just a point, there was no feeling sorry for ourselves. We have had a great season and have a second opportunity to get promoted and the boys are confident enough in the knowledge that our recent form, especially at home, has been first class.

4

“WE HAVE PROVED OVER THE SEASON; WE HAVE PLENTY OF GOALS IN OUR TEAM WITH TWO OF OUR INFORM STRIKERS NEAR THE TOP OF THE GOAL SCORING CHARTS.”

We have proved over the season; we have plenty of goals in our team with two of our inform strikers near the top of the goal scoring charts. What we need is one final push from everyone of Andover New Street persuasion inside this packed ground tonight, whether in the technical area, on the pitch or in the stands, because you can be our proverbial 12th man. I talk about our substitutes being ‘Game Changers’. You can be too. You can help turn this game in our favour.

Proud I always say how proud I am of my players; how proud I am to manage this club and how proud I am of the support we get.

I thank you for your patience, your understanding and your continuous backing since I took over. Finishing second is a great achievement in my first season alongside John in charge. It can get better still. Saturday marked John’s 250th game in charge at the club and I’d like to say thank you for all his support and advice over the season. So, let’s make Foxcotte Park a cauldron, let’s experience one of those famous New Street nights under the lights and move a step closer to fulfilling our ultimate goal for the season. Promotion. Enjoy the game!

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for what promises to be a memorable end to our home season in this Wessex League One play-off semifinal against Laverstock & Ford. We warmly welcome Liam McConnell, his management team and their players to Andover for the second time this season, and of course their supporters who have made the journey for tonight’s game. Statistically, our recent form bodes well, having lost only one in the last 15 matches and taken 15 points from the last 18. No-one will be sitting here at kick-off thinking we’ve nothing but a fair chance of going through to the final. It is all to play for, however long the tie goes on for tonight. Over the past year, since we appointed Jamie as manager alongside John, has shown is that

6

the future is very bright for Andover New Street. The Club is in a sound position financially. We have an excellent young manager, who is hungry for success, and we have a very good core squad to build from – with a number of younger players breaking into the first team this season. With continued activity on and off the pitch at the moment putting the club in the local spotlight we have been inundated with companies interested in becoming sponsors, guests and partners of this fine football club. We absolutely know that promotion to the next level will come. Whether it happens in the next five days, or we have to wait until this time next year, we firmly believe the Street will be a Wessex Premier outfit soon. The Club is more of an attractive proposition to incoming players than we have ever been. We already have a good nucleus of a squad who have performed consistently well all season and who have created competition at every position. The players recognise that they are in a place where they have a manager and team of staff who are a delight to work under and be developed by and at a Club that is progressing.

One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

“HITTING THE PLAYOFFS IN FORM IS Good evening and ALWAYS A MUST AND welcome back to WE ARE FULL OF Foxcotte Park for the biggest game of our CONFIDENCE AFTER A season and we hope RUN OF FIVE GAMES we can put on a good show to bring the WITH MAXIMUM curtain down on 202122 here with a flourish. POINTS.”

It’s not been easy. It’s been a tough season for us, but those 36 games are behind us now as we focus on tonight’s game against Laverstock & Ford.

It’s a horrible cliché’ but it’s 11 versus 11 at the end of the day. All the past matches, all past form and league position goes out the window.

We welcome Laverstock & Ford back here for the second time this season after our 3-3 draw back in January. The Play-Offs are a new experience for all of us, but having watched them involving teams from higher divisions, its very rarely do you get one side running away with it by half-time in the tie. They are always tight, cagey affairs between sides who have finished in the top places for a reason, and this one will be no different. Hitting the Play-Offs in form is always a must and we are full of confidence after a run of five games with maximum points. In that time, we have conceded just four goals. It’s a massive testament to everyone involved in getting us over the line.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

They say it’s the best way to go up, so all I ask for tonight is that you continue your fantastic support that has been on display all season and help us book a trip to the final. We are on our own patch, and we know that everyone will be desperate for a party atmosphere when the final whistle blows. On behalf of the squad, I thank you for all your backing throughout the season. Let’s have one last push to get over the line. Enjoy the game.

welcome LAVERSTOCK & FORD

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Laverstock & Ford Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Bull Dogs finished in 5th place and six points behind the Street. They stand in the way of a Play-Off Final for the Street. But no chickens can be counted yet as the Wiltshire side warmed up for tonight’s encounter by smashing five goals past Ash United at Church Road. Laverstock & Ford are definitely the in-form team in the division as they are currently unbeaten in 14 league games and won their last 11, which includes some victories over Andover Town, Folland Sports and Newport IOW. The Bull Dogs have certainly hit a purple patch of late and there is no doubt they have some of the meanest strikers in the league – including Archie Lovegrove, who was on the scoresheet at the weekend, and he has 17 goals to his name this season.

The meanest striker of the Bull Dogs squad is Russell Jones. The striker has netted 24 times this season and has been the figurehead of the promotion push and their season-long battle of playing catch-up after a disastrous start to the season – he will have to be watched. Liam McConnell’s men won 3-0 at home against an out of sorts Street team in October. Jones hit a second half hat-trick, capitalising on a couple of defensive errors, while the Street struggled to create any clear-cut chances at the other end. The reverse fixture in January at Foxcotte Park was an entertaining one for the neutral amongst the 169 crowd that saw the Street lead on three separate occasions only to be pulled back by the Bull Dogs each time. With Jones chipping home a 90th minute equaliser after Ross Cook looked to have won the Street the points with an 89th minute strike. On recent form the Bull Dogs will fancy their chances but with the Play-Offs the form book goes out the window, with the Street looking to maintain their fine home record.

The club finished bottom of the Premier Division in 2011–12 and were relegated back to Division One. LAVERSTOCK – THE AREA Flint mines and signs of barrows have been discovered on Burrough's Hill, indicating settlement back to Neolithic time. There is also evidence of settlement during the Iron and Bronze Age. A Roman cemetery and settlement has been found on Cocky's Hill. Laverstock has two entries in the Domesday Book which indicate the settlement was then owned by Wilton Abbey with some parts owned by officers of the king. Milford Mill Bridge, linking the parish with Salisbury over the Bourne, dates from the 14th century and is Grade I listed. St Thomas's Bridge to the north was named for Thomas Becket who walked an ancient route through the settlement. It was built around 1700 and widened in 1900. Laverstock once boasted a number of large houses: Laverstock Hall, Laverstock House, Laverstock Hill and Burroughs Hill. Laverstock House was a large and noted private licensed madhouse from the 18th to the 20th century, owned by the Finch family. It closed in 1955 and has since been demolished as have Laverstock Hill and Laverstock Hall to provide modern residential development.

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Andover New Street promotion bandwagon rolled on at Ash but not without over coming some bumps in the opening half, and on their first ever visit to the neat Shawfield Road ground they eventually recorded the same score line as the meeting between the two Clubs earlier in the season. The Street did not get off to the best of starts when a long ball split the Street defence and Jake Martin coolly slotted the ball past Sean O’Brien to put his side in front. With ten minutes left in the half the scores were level. Cook’s header from a Gosney corner was cleared off the line only for Shane Lock to prod the ball home in the ensuing scramble. A fierce free kick by Martin from the edge of the “D” was well parried by O’Brien and an equally strong effort from Cook at the other end was blocked at danger to life and limb and scrambled clear before all retired for the half time break.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Max Allen replaced Pearson on the re-start and in the opening attack Cook slid the ball home only to be denied, rightfully, by a rather late offside flag. The home side were no doubt hoping to continue in the same vein as the first half but found themselves behind for the first time after just seven minutes when Cook’s through ball allowed Mike Gosney to beat the advancing keeper. Rusher struck the bar after a neatly worked corner before Gosney returned the compliment with a through ball to Cook who was bought down by Fredericks and the penalty awarded. Happily, the referee deemed that was sufficient punishment and Ross Cook converted the spot kick with his usual aplomb. Martin collected the only caution of the afternoon for a late challenge and then saw the visitors make it four one on the half hour mark as Joe Wright overlapped on the left and the low cross was turned home by Mike Gosney. The scorer then gave way to Mikey Davis and a Cook header was tipped on to the bar by Fredericks before the striker was replaced by Josh Jeffery with Street then adding three further goals in the last six minutes as the home heads dropped. Lock’s determination set Reece Rusher up for number five before SHANE LOCK himself made it six, cutting in from the left and finding the corner despite Fredericks getting his hands to the ball, before a solo effort by Josh Jeffery made the total seven on the brink of stoppage time.

EAST COWES VICTORIA 0-2 STREET COOK 4, 56

WHAT’S THE STORY? On a sunny day on the Island, Andover New Street ensured second position in the table – their Championship hopes thwarted by Bemerton Heath’s win over Andover Town – but it was a match that had all the elements of an end of season game. surprisingly, given what was at stake. Street made the better start with two crosses causing danger in the home area and a goal bound shot blocked but after just five minutes the visitors took the lead. A diagonal ball from Reece Rusher found the defender the wrong side of Ross Cook and the striker coolly beat the exposed Woodford in the home goal. A Vics free kick was scrambled clear, and Cook was too high after Cameron Thatcher made the opening but with Ryan Gregory and Ollie West winning the aerial battles, clear cut chances were few. Street rather wasted a free kick after Shane Lock was bought down just outside the area and the referee stopped play twice in as many minutes when he got in the way of the ball. At the halfway point Street were forced into a change with Max Allen replacing Adam Pearson and though play was generally scrappy Sean O’Brien in the visiting goal was at full stretch to keep out a Sam Cant drive and Rusher was twice only inches too high at the other end, Vics’s endeavour was keeping them in the game and O’Brien saved well from Connor Lyon. Lock was denied at close range when he met a Mike Gosney cross and Cook’s fierce drive after he had fastened on to a Lee Morris through ball was deflected behind for a corner, probably to the relief of the goalkeeper. However, the respite was brief as the corner was swung in from the right, keeper Woodford, under no pressure, missed the ball completely and it finished up inside the far post with Ross Cook claiming the last touch. It was very much all New Street now with Rusher hitting the side netting, Thatcher having a shot blocked and a Lock snapshot inches too high. New Street should have scored more, with respect to their opponents, - it was that sort of game - but they did all that was required to take the three points and bring their League Programme to a successful close.

The most goals scored by a Street player is Shane Lock, who edges 2 ahead of Ross Cook on 26 and Reece Rusher on 18. Street have failed to score in 2 league fixtures this season, and this occurred in a 3-0 defeat against Laverstock & Ford at Church Road and 0-0 in the home draw with Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

7 36

The number matches played in the Wessex League 1 this season, with Street winning 26, drawing 6 and losing 4 times. The Street have scored 120 goals and conceded 41, giving them 84 points and a goal difference of plus 79.

33

The most appearances in the league by a Street player is Shane Lock, who only didn’t feature in the games against Laverstock & Ford and away at Folland Sports. Lock is closely followed by Danny Field on 30 appearances, 1 appearance was from the substitutes bench. Lock has the longest run of consecutive league appearances 21.

32

The number of different players to have featured for the Street in this competition this season. 1 of these players have appeared only once: Kieron Le Brun played in the opening day loss to Whitchurch United and has been an unused substitute once against Folland Sports.

26

The biggest margin of victory and it’s happened twice during the season. The 8-1 home win over Totton & Eling was matched with our last home game, the recent 7-0 home win over Ringwood Town. 7-1 has been a repeating margin of victory for the Street this season, with the score line appearing on 5 separate occasions with victories over Petersfield Town, away at Millbrook, home to Ash United, the revised home win over Verwood Town and the away match at Ash United.

11

The number of clean sheets in the 36 fixtures with 4 coming away from home. The Street managed 2 consecutive clean sheets in the Wessex League on 2 occasions.

26

The number of times the Street have scored first in a Wessex League 1, and they’ve ended up winning 23 of these. The sole defeat came on the opening day of the season against Whitchurch when the hosts scored just before half-time and then with 20 minutes to go after Street had taken a 38th minute lead through Luke Hooper.

3

The number of times the Street have won after conceding the first goal, two of these have been mentioned already as they were 7-1 victories both away at Millbrook, where Reece Rusher scored 5 and also assisted Chris Flood and Joe Rogers scored and at Ash United with Shane Lock and Mike Gosney both scoring twice and Ross Cook, Reece Rusher and substitute Josh Jeffery also netting. The other win was the 2-1 win over Fawley also here at Foxcotte Park. The Oilers had taken an early lead through Dylan Knight, but the Street equalised when Harry Lawton scored and then left it late before Shane Lock scored the winner in the 85th minute.

14

The longest unbeaten run of the season started on 18th December at Fleet Spurs as Lock, Robbie Owen and Lawton scored in a 3-0 win at Fleet Spurs. Nine wins, and a further four draws followed as the Street scored 44 goals and conceded 11 times, keeping five clean sheets in the process. After six consecutive victories over Fawley, Millbrook, Ash United, Petersfield Town, Totton & Eling and Verwood Town, the Street drew with league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins in an amazing goalless game. Both teams left everything on the pitch, and it was the Street that created the better opportunities, with Shane Lock’s early chance being cleared off the line and Liam Hibberd’s fine edge of the box volley being saved by Bemmy keeper Paddy Creese. The second half had a few chances at both ends with Joe Wright striking a post and then Reece Rusher curling a shot that seemed destined for the top corner before it was spectacularly kept out by Creese to ensure a point a piece.

The game against Bemerton was the only goalless draw for the Street in the League. There was one other 0-0 draw, away to Shepton Mallett in the FA Cup in early August. Of the other score draws, two have come against Andover Town, with Cameron Thatcher and Ross Cook scoring late to snatch a deserved point off Town at the Portway and the 1-1 draw here last month with Cook’s second half strike being cancelled out by Adam Pattinson. Other disappointing home draws came against both Millbrook and Laverstock & Ford, with both visiting sides scoring late on to take a point with 3-3 score lines. The remaining draw came at Folland Sports, with Street coming from behind with 10 men for the entire second half after Cook’s red card.

27

The number of goals scored in the final 15 minutes of the second half. Just 16 goals have been scored in the opening 15 minutes of the first half. Defensively, just 5 goals were conceded in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, with 13 goals conceded in the middle 15 minutes of the second half, between minutes 60 and 75.

116

The average attendance for away matches this season, with 369 being the highest at the Portway in our previously mentioned 2-2 draw. The lowest away attendance was at Fleet Spurs with just 35 people watching. In contrast the average attendance 163, with the highest being 570 for the Andover derby last month. In total we have had 3,006 spectators through the turnstiles at Foxcotte Park this season.

Street went into a 2-0 0 lead in the opening five minutes thanks to a volley from Sean Rogers and the second the result of a goalmouth scramble converted by Chris Sutton. Stockbridge scored early in the second half but Sutton soon afterwards added to his tally t to make it 3-1. 1. Danny Dolan looks ahead to today’s game

In their first season in the Wessex Premier the Street started off with a defeat away at Bashley in blistering temperatures and this was followed with a home defeat to Shaftesbury in a game that the Street felt they deserved at least a point. The FA Cup offered a welcome distraction from the poor league start and it was the first time that the club had entered the competition and John Smith’s men had to endure a tight and tense first half against a Romsey side high on confidence following their opening day win on the previous Saturday. The Street had already signalled their early intent to try and get behind the Romsey back four but the final ball was just lacking that bit of quality. Romsey were also playing some good football and created a couple of half chances that the Street defence dealt with. Then Zach Neve put the Street in front on 27 minutes with a fine finish past Jordan Westbrook in the Romsey goal. Romsey replied and should have perhaps been level on 35 minutes when a cross into the box from the right found Jack Odhambut the Romsey forward skewed his shot wide of the goal from 9 yards. They also tested George Baxter in the Street goal with a long range strike that zipped off the wet turf but Baxter got behind the shot to parry to safety. The Street doubled their lead after the interval on 57 minutes when Neve got his second when he twisted and turned the Romsey central defence before placing the ball past Westbrook into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

THE PROGRAMME The Street produced a 40-page programme, costing the usual £1, for the visit of Romsey. Naturally, manager John Smith, in his column was looking forward to managing the club in it’s first FA Cup match and calling it a massive game for both sides. There was detailed look at the Romsey side and there was the first introduction of the away fan interview, with Romsey supporter Tony Galsworthy in the hot seat. With it being the FA Cup, there was a Stats & Facts article supplied by @FACupFactfile, that looked at all the stats from the previous season’s FA Cup competition. Wessex One side Fawley were pointed out for being second in a list of clubs who have failed to go beyond the Extra Preliminary Round in any of their FA Cup campaigns.

IN SAFE

HANDS

STREET KEEPER IS GOING FOR GLORY There are a select group in the Street squad that have been in and out of the side over the course of the season, Sean O’Brien is one of those men. The 34-year-old has had, by his own admission, an up and down season. Unable to get a starting place at the beginning of the season, with Chris Wing between the sticks, before uncharacteristic mistakes by Wing saw O’Brien regain the number one jersey, which coincided with Street’s up turn in results. And after his injury at Fawley saw him replaced by Michael Weathers and a defeat followed at Laverstock & Ford without O’Brien in the side. The fact remains that the Street have lost only one league game with O’Brien between the sticks. That was the narrow 2-1 defeat at Newport IOW. He was then displaced by fellow stoppers Weatherall and Jordi Wilson, the former Tadley stopper has made a huge impact in the Street’s recent matches towards the end of the league campaign. For O’Brien though, it’s vital that the Play-Offs are approached in the same manner as if it was a run-of-the-mill league fixture in the middle of the season. Too much pressure at this stage could be calamitous. “We had our goal at the start of the season to get promoted and didn’t get it, so the next step is to do it via the Play-Offs, and we have a good chance as any.” O’Brien tells Word on the Street. “It will be tough, but we go into it on the back of a good run of 5 wins. We wanted to push Bemerton all the way and we did that by taking

36

it all the way to the last day of the season, they dealt with the pressure of needing to win and fair play to them. We have to settle for a Play-Off spot, and we go into the game in good form. “We’ll approach the game like we would any other. I’m sure we’ll put on a good show and hopefully have the advantage of playing at home and get the right result to take us to the final. “We have plenty of experience in our squad with some of the players previously playing and winning important big matches. We will be looking to get on the front foot and trying to win the game – like we have done in the majority of our fixtures this season. It’s going to be tough for all four teams in the Play-Offs and we have as good a chance as any.” The goalkeeper has been around long enough to deal with the highs and lows of football and after the disappointments of sitting on the bench for a couple of months from January, O’Brien is delighted to see the confidence return to the side in recent weeks. “Some of the performances this season have been unbelievable, we have played in some big games and put everything into them. Away cup performances at Shepton Mallet, Andover Town and Cribbs in the FA Vase. We also pushed Hamworthy all the way in the Vase tie at home and had some hard-fought victories in the league – against the likes of Downton, Folland Sports and we were the first and only team to beat Bemerton Heath at Moon Park this season and we were also unbeaten against them, after the 00 match here. “On the flip side of that, we have had a couple of disappointing performances against Alresford in the North Hants Cup and also the defeats to Laverstock & Ford and both the home and away

defeats to Newport IOW. It has been a weird situation as we have always been playing catchup and perhaps some of our confidence went after the Newport defeat. It is a young squad. There isn’t a lot of us over the age of 30 and when you’re playing in front of big crowds and things aren’t going your way players go inside their shells. Confidence is huge in football and now its role reversed and its great to see. We’re doing well at the moment. We’re organised, stronger and playing with confidence. We have sharpened up our defensive game and we need to take that into the Play-Offs.” So, as one of the elder statesmen, does he have a role in geeing up his team-mates before they go into battle? “We have a lot of experienced lads on the pitch. Locky’s vocal. He still young. But he’s played over 200 games for the club. The changing room is full of good characters. “AP, Scotty, Cooky and Ash James are all good at that. Ash and Cooky have played at Wembley and won the Vase, their passion for the game certainly comes out. “I have the best view in the house – watching the quality in our side go forward and attack teams.”

SEASON REVIEW AUG P8 ● W3 ● D2 ● L3 ● GS15 ● GA14

NOV P8 ● W6 ● D0 ● L2 ● GS24 ● GA9

Defeat on the opening day, away at Whitchurch, deflated what had been a promising pre-season campaign. But a great display at Shepton Mallett in the FA Cup earned a replay before bowing out with a 4-0 defeat. A local derby with Andover Town came next and we somehow found ourselves 2-0 down despite dominating the half. A point was rescued through Cameron Thatcher and a late Ross Cook strike. Normal service was resumed with a 5-0 win over Fleet Spurs, with a Luke Hooper hat-trick. A 2-0 defeat at Moneyfields signalled a Hampshire Cup exit before an impressive display saw a 3-1 win a New Milton and then a Ross Cook hat-trick saw a 4-3 League cup win over at Cowes, despite playing over an hour with 10 men.

Four wins on the bounce started November, Downton, Ringwood, Andover Town (North Hants Cup) and Romsey were defeated before a muchchanged side exited the Russell Cotes Cup to Locks Heath. The FA Vase adventure was over with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Wessex Premier Hamworthy United. Totton & Eling felt the backlash to that defeat as the Street notched 8 goals. Hooper, Thatcher and Reece Rusher all notching braces. Verwood was seen off 3-2 with the game being played in blustery conditions.

SEP P4 ● W4 ● D0 ● L0 ● GS20 ● GA3 Another 5-0 victory at Foxcotte Park against East Cowes started the month before a 4-1 win over Amesbury in the FA Vase with Lloyd Thompson netting a hat-trick. Thompson was on target again as the Street ran riot with a 7-1 win over Petersfield, Shane Lock earning a hat-trick this time. The month ended with another local derby at the Portway in the FA Vase and Daryll Phillips made an immediate impact by scoring inside the first minute and ending the game with the match ball in a fine 4-1 win.

OCT P6 ● W3 ● D1 ● L2 ● GS12 ● GA12 A month of mixed results for the Street with 2 league wins over Folland Sports, Ross Cook coming to the rescue in the last minute and another hat-trick from Cook sealed a 3-1 win at Fawley. Dropped points at home with a 3-3 draw with Millbrook, while a 3-0 defeat at Laverstock & Ford and also a 1-0 defeat to Downton in the League Cup. But the highlight of the month was the progression in the FA Vase with a superb performance at Cribbs, goals from Cook and Lock took the Street into the next round.

DEC P2 ● W1 ● D0 ● L1 ● GS4 ● GA2 Short month with games postponed during the month due to waterlogged pitches. One game that was played and perhaps shouldn’t have been was at Newport (IOW), with the sodden pitch causing a number of injuries, notably Jeffery and Cook leaving the pitch early through injury. The Port winning 2-1 with all 3 goals in the first half despite the Street pressure in the second half. The only other game saw the Street ease to the three points with a 3-0 victory at Fleet Spurs, Lock, Owen and Lawton on target.

JAN P6 ● W3 ● D2 ● L1 ● GS10 ● GA10 The New Year started with a 2-0 win over neighbours Whitchurch, early goals from Cook and Lock saw off the Jam Boys in front of a crowd of 240. The biggest game of the season then took place at leaders Bemerton Heath. Harry Lawton’s spectacular strike and an own goal saw off Bemmy, who made a fight of it, even with 10 men. A 3-3 draw with Laverstock & Ford followed before another spirited display from the Street saw them earn a point at Folland Sports, despite playing the second half with 10 men after Cook’s dismissal. A dismal 4-0 defeat to Alresford in the North Hants Cup was followed up with a narrow 2-1 win over Fawley. Lock returning from injury to net a late winner.

FEB P5 ● W5 ● D0 ● L0 ● GS29 ● GA4 As far as perfect months go, this has to be up there with the best of them. A well-fought 7-1 win at Millbrook, despite going a goal down. Reece Rusher played a part in seven goals, scoring 5 and setting up the other 2. Chris Flood got off the mark following his dual signing from Hungerford Town. The Street hit seven again the following Tuesday against Ash United despite no recognised striker in the side. Jeffery fully deserving his hat-trick with an energetic display. Then 3 goals in six minutes earned the points at Petersfield with the returning Liam Hibberd coming off the bench. Another signing, Mike Gosney made his debut in the game against Totton & Eling and created the opener and also got on the scoresheet in the second half of a 5-0 win over the Miller’s. The month ended with another 7-1 win, this time over Verwood Town in the re-arranged fixture. The Street were 6-1 up at half-time with Lock scoring 4 but could only add one more after the breakthrough Flood.

MAR P5 ● W2 ● D2 ● L1 ● GS8 ● GA6 A BIG month of important home matches started with leaders Bemerton Heath visiting Foxcotte Park. The Street were the happier side with a point following the 0-0 draw, but perhaps should have won the game with Joe Wright hitting a post and both Hibberd and Rusher being denied by superb saves by keeper Creese. A narrow 1-0 win over New Milton Town came courtesy of a great Ross Cook header. The local derby with Andover Town saw a league record attendance for the season of 570 watch a tense and nailbiting encounter with both sides desperate for www.ansfc.co.uk

the three points. The first half saw the Street miss several chances but eventually took the lead in the second half, through a great Cook strike, after Town had hit the bar from Holmes. The Town did earn a point however when Adam Pattinson was left unmarked at the back post to drill home. Last Saturday saw another important weekend with Andover Town taking points off leaders Bemerton Heath with a 1-1 draw. However, Street could not take advantage as a below par first half display saw them trail Port 31 at the break. And despite an improved performance in the second half, could not earn any points, with Shane Lock’s goal in the second half only turning out to be a consolation. Tuesday night saw the Street return to winning ways with Cook scoring all four goals in a 4-2 win over Romsey.

APR P4 ● W4 ● D0 ● L0 ● GS18 ● GA2 The Street ended the final month with another 7-1 victory over Ringwood Town with Shane Lock scoring four and Ross Cook getting a hat-trick. A tense away match at Downton was next with Reece Rusher scoring early on after great control by Lock setup the opportunity. Ollie Davies took advantage of a defensive error to drill his effort past O’Brien to bring the Robins level, before with just 20 minutes left, Lock produced another assist to pick out Rusher again for his second. An unfamiliar trip to Ash United was next and in a sluggish first half the Street managed to recover from going a goal down to win – yes you guessed it - 7-1! The final game at East Cowes was comfortably won with just a Cook brace although it should have been more. Now onto the Play-Offs…

SUPER SUPPORT Once again your support this season has been incredible – just over 3,000 of you passing through the Foxcotte Park turnstiles in matches in the Wessex League One matches alone. From the 36 league matches the average attendance here has been a fantastic 163 – by far the largest average in the division with the next best average just 2 behind from Downton at 161. Our average figure isn’t far away from our last home fixture against Ringwood Town. In total the league attendance this term was 3,006. One attendance exceeded 500 with 570 attending the Andover derby in March. There were also healthy attendances for the games against Downton – 240, Bemerton Heath Harlequins – 233, and Verwood Town with 209. There was also a high midweek attendance when tonight’s visitors last came to Foxcotte Park when 169 clicked through the Foxcotte Park turnstiles. The lowest league gate was the 65 that witnessed the 5-0 victory over East Cowes Victoria in early September. Not included in those figures are the cup ties, the highest attendance in any cup match coming in the North Hants Quarter-Final tie against Andover Town when 220 witnessed the 5-1 win.

HOME & AWAY Average Foxcotte Park league attendance: 163 Highest Foxcotte Park league attendance: 570 vs Andover Town – Mar 22 Average Away league attendance: 116 Highest Foxcotte Park league attendance: 369 vs Andover Town – Aug 21

Away from home, the total aggregated attendance works out at 1978 and gives an average of 116. The biggest gate the Street have encountered on their travels was the 369 that watched two late goals from Cameron Thatcher and Ross Cook gain a deserved draw with Andover Town at the Portway on the 17th August. The lowest attendance was at Fleet Spurs on the 18th December when just 35 people were in attendance with the Street winning 3-0. Of the six away cup matches, the highest attended was at the Portway in the FA Vase with 279 witnessing our 4-1 victory. This just pipped our FA Cup trip to Shepton Mallet in early August when we grinded out a 0-0 draw to earn a replay.

UPS & DOWNS

WHO THE STREET COULD BE FACING NEXT SEASON DOWN FROM SOUTHERN LEAGUE Should the Street be successful in their quest for promotion then supporters will face at least one new side into the Wessex League. Barnstable Town have been confirmed as relegated and at the time of going to print Mangotsfield United still have an outside chance of finishing in the third-from-bottom play-off spot but at least that would give them a chance to remain at Step 4 level. Lymington Town have also been relegated due to ground grading. Whoever ends up being relegated from the Southern League South Division One there is sure to be a league restructure so it remains unclear who will be moving into the Wessex Prem.

The Street could face Michael Birmingham’s Horndean next season

IN WESSEX PREMIER The Street definitely won’t be playing Hamworthy United following their elevation to the Southern League. The Hammers secured the Wessex Premier title in style with a 4-1 win at AFC Portchester. Bashley have joined them in second place but needed one more victory to achieve the points per game ratio to secure automatic promotion, they achieved that on Saturday with a 4-0 away win at Christchurch. Of those clubs not involved in last day drama that the Street could face include Shaftesbury, Horndean, Brockenhurst, AFC Stoneham, AFC Portchester, Baffins Milton Rovers, Alton, Hamble Club, Fareham Town and Blackfield & Langley – the only team in the Wessex Premier that the Street have not played in the Prem. For ground hoppers, Moneyfields are currently building their new ground at Dover Road that will consist of two artificial pitches forming part of the multi-million-pound John Jenkins Stadium redevelopment. Amesbury Town are confirmed as relegated and Hythe & Dibden are second from bottom but have been confirmed as staying up thanks to a 3-0 win at Cowes Sports on Saturday.

www.ansfc.co.uk

WESSEX LEAGUE ONE Should the Street be in the Wessex premier next year then they will meet champions Bemerton Heath Harlequins once more. The Play-Offs are all contested by sides with Wessex Premier experience with the second semifinal between third-placed Newport IOW and fourth-placed Folland Sports. The Street will definitely not be playing Totton & Eling following their relegation from the Wessex League One. Fleet Spurs are confirmed in 18th position but maybe reprieved of relegation depending on the success of the sides applying for promotion to the Wessex League.

UP FROM DORSET & HANTS LEAGUE Should the Street face another season in the Wessex League One they could face any of the successful applicants from the feeder leagues from the Dorset & Hampshire Premier Divisions. The applicants are: Fleetlands, Stockbridge, Hamworthy Rec, Dorchester Sports and Denmead, however, Denmead have failed their ground grading. @AndoverNSfc

NON-LEAGUE UNSUNG HEROES

By Jon Couch

Northern Premier League chairman Mark Harris has a good way of explaining the value of volunteers. If you offer a club £10,000 or ten volunteers, he poses, then the majority will take the volunteers without a second thought. Volunteers are so vital. They are the heartbeat that keep Non-League clubs going. Turn up at a random Non-League ground during the week, and the chances are pretty high someone will be there, be it cutting the grass, adding a lick of paint to the fences – all done for the love of the game and their club. We’ve seen the value of volunteers through the covid pandemic. The fact so many clubs were able to withstand the gates being shut for so long is, in the majority of cases, down to the selfless work of so many. It’s a reminder that Non-League clubs will only thrive if they are able to find people to give up some of their spare time.

People probably underestimate how they can help. It’s not only about weeding the terraces, there are so many different skills that are invaluable to clubs and transfer across from the world business, social media or many other different walks of life. And sometimes even just distributing a few fliers advertising games around the town can make a big difference. We’re really excited to have the return of the annual National Game Awards this season. If you’ve grabbed a copy of the paper recently, you would have seen all about it. Among the individual and team awards for achievements on the pitch, there is a very special gong that never fails to raise a smile. Our title sponsors Buildbase are also putting their name to this year’s Unsung Hero award. Every club has that special person who goes above and beyond. Not that they do it for the pats on the back, but it’s nice to give them some recognition. We need your help to make sure this year’s Unsung Hero ends up in the most deserving hands. If you know of someone you think should be in the running, then please drop us a line. We’d love to hear all about the work they do at your club – and how valuable they are. league look The final Saturday of the season and with the Premier Division Title already decided, attention was focused on Division One where the Title race went down to the wire, to quote a hackneyed phrase. Odds were very much in Bemerton Heath’s favour in that a win would ensure them of the title, regardless of other results, and they duly achieved same with a 3-1 defeat of Andover Town.

It was fitting that Justin Bennett, the Division’s leading scorer, claimed two of the goals with Danny Young adding the third. Andover Town, who were in the promotion race until the final two to three weeks, saw their goal come from Ben Emans. Andover New Street, the only side who could have denied Bemerton the Title, won 2-0 at East Cowes Vics thanks to a Ross Cook double, to take second place and a few miles across the Island Newport’s 3-1 victory over Whitchurch gave them third spot, The visitors scored first through Nathan Lynch but goals from Jordan Browne, Joe Butcher and Aaron Burford saw Newport home. Follands, without a game on the day, took fourth place and Laverstock & Ford finished a superb second half to the season with a 5-0 win over Ash United at the Dell to reach the final play off place, the goals coming from Jake Rawkins with a double, plus singles from Archie Lovegrove, Chae Sykes and Lewis Wakeford. Two Clubs who had been on the fringe of the promotion race all season, New Milton Town and Romsey Town, shared the points in a one all draw – Noel McCarthy-Gardiner and Liam Magee with the goals – while Downton, another Club who were there or thereabouts all season without greatly challenging the top five, finished in style with an 8-0 win at bottom Club Totton & Eling, Ollie Davies led the way with four, Cameron Butler added two and there were singles from Shaun Prentice and Will Mackie. A rather ignominious end to an awful season for the Millers who are now likely to lose their League place after some thirty years under their present name and past life as BAT. Millbrook have endured a season in which when they have lost, they have frequently lost heavily, and such was the case again with visitors Petersfield winning 6-2. Max Paddon scored four with Keiran Alcock and Aaron Akoman making up the six. Sean Haines and Martyn Randall providing the Dockers goals.

48

Lastly Fleet Spurs and Ringwood finished all square at Kennels Lane after Joe Petty had given the visitors the lead and Tom White had claimed the equaliser. Baffins Milton Rovers and Hamble Club started the Premier Division fixtures rolling with a game on Good Friday where the home side came out on top by three goals to nil courtesy of Oscar Johnston, Tommy Scutt and Miles Everett. The attendance just topped the three-figure mark which was perhaps disappointing. Moving to the Saturday Hamworthy United finished their highly successful season with a best of three goals home victory over Fareham Town -goals from Lee Francis and Steve Devlin outweighing one from Siph Mdlalose – while Bashley celebrated their second place with a 4-0 win at Christchurch with Matt Tubbs, Liam Farrugia, Harry Bunce and Lewis Ross on target. Shaftesbury, the leading scorers in the Division, added five more to their tally against Alton with the Brewers scoring twice in reply, Shaftesbury have had the wonderful knack all season of the goals being shared around and such was the case again with Asa Phillips, Luke Delaney, Sam Davidson, Greg Peel and Luke Burbidge on the scoresheet with Junior Kamara and Luke Perkins replying for the visitors Horndean ensured fourth place with a 3-0 win at Alresford thanks to Zack Willett, Karol Skoczen and Arty Kerton while AFC Stoneham leapfrogged Brockenhurst and took fifth place on goal difference thanks to strikes from Jake Thomson and Mat Bainbridge. AFC Portchester completed their fine second half to the season with a 4-1 win over Portland with Rafa Ramos, Liam Robinson, Sam Pearce and George Barker on target, Troy Walbridge replying for the visitors. And finally last day success for three Clubs who have been in or around the relegation area all season. Bournemouth won 3-1 at home to US Portsmouth with two goals from Kyle Graham and one from Marcus Cullen against one from Luke Slade, two goals from Filippos Terzidis and one from Stefan Williams gave Hythe & Dibden a 3-0 victory at Cowes Sports and a lone goal from Josh Moore against Blackfield & Langley enabled Amesbury to at least finish the season on a high note.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN

In those sepia-tinted days, the memento of a football match was the programme, hence they were called just that, “Souvenir Programme,” a reminder of an afternoon or evening shouting yourself hoarse for 90 minutes of exhilaration or disappointment. Programmes are, sadly, dying out and it is hard to see a future beyond five years for a commodity that was once a staple of any matchday.

There were other items of memorabilia that accompanied the fan experience: rossettes, rattles and scarves. The wool version of the scarf was later replaced or complemented by a “silk” version, although there wasn’t an ounce of silk in them and you didn’t want to get too close to anyone with a cigarette in their hand for fear of third degree burns. Football violence dissuaded many fans from carrying their colours, but in the Premier League age, the sign of allegiance is the football shirt, that highly flammable, static-inducing garment that beer bellies and bingo wings are squeezed into at every opportunity. Football in major cities has become a tourist attraction and crowds at places like Stamford Bridge, the Emirates and the Tottenham stadium are full of day-trippers and visitors to London. They empty the club stores of merchandise, hungrily snapping-up evidence of their trip. At the same time, they take photos on their phones, even record the action from high up in the stands. Quite often, they will have a scarf around their neck, a poorly constructed strip of synthetic fabric with the fixture emblazoned across it: Chelsea v Lille or Arsenal v Villareal, for example. Regulars and old-school supporters despise these scarves, considering they are unnecessary and a sign of a lack of fanatical, even myopic, devotion to the cause. They also reflect the contemporary need to demonstrate where the owner of the scarf has been. Doubtless, the item will be seen on social media before the game has even kicked off.

54

But what is so offensive about these scarves? I would agree they are unnecessary and pretty tasteless, but then wandering around in your best football shirt is also an acquired habit. Likewise, blind devotion in this age of so many alternatives is also a little limiting. So why not show appreciation for both teams? Why not reveal a flag of friendship? These scarves have been “invented” to cash in on experience-hungry fans from younger generations. It is doubtful any club would issue official scarves of this nature (maybe they do???), but somewhere, in an industrial unit in a grubby corner of a home counties town, somebody is knocking-out these scarves. It is no different to the many hawkers who peddled metal badges and other such throwaway items that exploited fans eager to fill their homes with memorabilia. We’ve all been there, especially when we were young – I had a leather key ring that buttoned-up to conceal a fold-out strip of tiny shots of the Chelsea team of 1971-72 that I kept for some 30 years. I bought it at the UEFA Cup final at Tottenham in 1972. I was recently in Madrid and the craze has arrived in the Spanish capital, although “Atlético v Manchester United” is sure to be a collectable item in the years ahead. At the end of the day, these items are hardly scarce or even valuable as there have been produced in bulk. Admittedly, the football shirt can be classed as an item of clothing that spans the generations, but does it… really? Half-and-half scarves are for a specific audience and while I wouldn’t be seen with one draped around my neck, the audience that would buy them, in some ways, represents the future. The old guard are fading fast, their arthritic hips and knees forcing them into the main stand in their living rooms. Ultimately, who needs a football shirt or scarf or that item of mass-produced object d’art to show their preference anyway?
