ANDOVER NEW STREET v LAVERSTOCK & FORD TUESDAY 18th JANUARY 2022 KICK-OFF 7.45PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Welcome back to you all to Foxcotte Park for our re-arranged midweek fixture with Laverstock & Ford. This evening we’re under the floodlights for what promises to be another keenly contested encounter, especially after our tremendous result on Saturday. The Bull Dogs have after making a slow start in August, have been on an impressive run, which has included draws with leaders Bemerton Heath and Folland Sports and also the win over the Street at the Dell earlier this season. They come to Foxcotte Park a point behind the Street in 6th position, but they have played 4 extra games. Street will need to be on their mettle to ensure their unbeaten run at Foxcotte Park in the league continues. There’s plenty inside this evening’s issue including a match report on Saturday’s win at Bemerton and the thoughts of both manager Jamie Coleman and Football Chairman John Ward, and much more besides. Remember, if you have any feedback on the programme, please do get in touch with us. Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s important match against Laverstock & Ford in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Bull Dogs, including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Laverstock & Ford that have made the journey to Andover this evening and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on tonight. Of course, this fixture quickly follows our success last Saturday against league leaders Bemerton Heath. It was top draw performance from the entire team, in a game that had everything. But what was most pleasing was the character of the side and the desire to put everything on the line to win the game for each other. Bemerton showed why they are top of the league as they made it really difficult, even with 10 men for over two-thirds of the game. The lads, however, were exceptional and it was an excellent strike from Harry Lawton that put us on our way to a crucial three points. The top of the league is starting to bunch together again with the remaining sides at the top all winning, including our visitors tonight, who enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Petersfield Town.

Blistering Our last home league game came against Whitchurch a couple of weeks ago and another blistering first half display put us in control with goals from Ross Cook and Shane Lock. It was an all-round team performance, and we scored some quality goals.

Tremendous I thought the performance from the whole team on that Monday was tremendous. Ross Cook and Cam Thatcher came back into the side, and both can be very pleased with their contributions. Their displays epitomised the strong and committed performance by each and every player and that was the basis for a deserved result in some difficult conditions. After this evening’s game we face another test on Saturday against Folland Sports, who will provide stern opposition at their ground. However, given the levels of support we have received this season, I think your backing can really help us push further on as this campaign gets tougher. It is vital we focus on tonight’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us. I know that the Laverstock & Ford players are going to be really up for this game, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good evening and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Laverstock & Ford, here tonight for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable evening with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into the promotion frame with our hard-fought victory over Bemerton Heath last Saturday – which I hope we can improve on tonight.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Tonight’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Although Laverstock were not consistent at the beginning of the season, they have still produced some

6

impressive results – including draws with both Folland Sports and Bemerton. We will of course need to be on our toes to ensure we can maintain our winning form.

Congratulations Congratulations also need to go to the side for picking up the Club of the Month award, which was presented before our game with Whitchurch United and also further congratulations to Harry Lawton for winning Player of the Month for December. Harry has been a key player for us recently and hopefully will continue that form into the New Year.

We have a number of tough matches coming up with our trip to Folland Sports on Saturday and this is quickly followed up with a North Hants Cup semi-final with Alresford Town, here next Tuesday with a 7.45pm kick-off. One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on Ash United in another important game as we look to move into the top 4 IF we win this evening.

“WE’VE GOT OURSELVES INTO A GOOD POSITION – NOW IT’S UP TO US TO PUSH ON.”

After a great start to the second half last Saturday when we went 2-0 up against Bemerton, following H’s wonder strike in the first half and their own goal just after half-time, we had to withstand some pressure from the league leaders but although we conceded halfway through the second half, we defended well to preserve the lead and the three points. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week. Michael Weatherall has come into the side for the last three games with Paddy out with injury and he has done well with 2 clean sheets. We’ve conceded just three in the last four matches, and it is great to see that our defensive solidity is coming to the fore again, at a time when we need it most.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Given the run we’ve been on it will be easy to get carried away. After 1 defeat in the last nine league games that is no surprise. However, we have a strong and hungry management team, coaching staff and dressing room that will ensure we will not get complacent. As I’ve said, it’s a long old season and a lot can change.

All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on.

This evening we take on Laverstock & Ford, who are just behind us in the league, so we know that we will be in for a tough game this evening. Our recent form, especially at home, might mean we go into the match as favourites but that is nothing new to us. In my experience these are the games that are the toughest. We’ve already seen how competitive this league is, and that any team can beat any other side if the mentality and preparation is not right going into the game. We will be ready and looking forward to another battle this evening. Get behind us once again tonight. Enjoy the game.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN THIS SATURDAY WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO FELLOW PROMOTION SEEKERS FOLLAND SPORTS AT FOLLAND PARK

FOLLAND SPORTS WHO? Folland Sports, aka the

Planemaker’s, from Folland Park, are the Street’s opponents on the 22nd of January. Folland’s won 7-1 in their most recent match against Totton & Eling and they are currently in third place in the division with 51 points and are level with Andover Town and behind leaders Bemerton by 3 points, but both the Planemaker’s and Town have a game in hand on the leaders. The Street are 6 points behind the Planemaker’s with 2 games in hand and will need to take maximum points from those games to overtake them. HOW THEY DOING? Folland Sports won their opening six matches in the league, as they defeated Downton, Totton & Eling, Romsey Town, Verwood Town, Andover Town and Fleet Spurs before they were defeated 4-1 away at Bemerton Heath. They got back to winning ways with a 3-0 win before a 4-3 defeat here at Foxcotte Park. Since that result, they went on an impressive unbeaten run with wins against New Milton Town, Millbrook, Infinity, Fawley and Petersfield Town before a 4-1 defeat at Newport (IOW). The Planemaker’s have since gone 8 games unbeaten, which includes a 1-0 victory over Premier Division Baffins Milton Rovers in the League Cup and further league wins over Ash United, Ringwood Town and East Cowes Victoria. They also had draws with Whitchurch United and Downton. The Planemaker’s also have former Street striker Ilyas Warshow in their squad, and he has played in their last 2

10

HOW TO GET THERE? Folland Park is 49

minutes or 40 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A303 towards Basingstoke. Then join the A34 and head towards and join the M3 heading south. Take the exit on the M3 towards the Airport/Portsmouth and continue as the motorway merges onto the M27. At junction 7, take the A334 exit to Botley/Hedge End. Keep right to continue towards Charles Watts Way/A334. Take the A27 and then continue on Hamble Lane/A3025, until at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto B3397 and then turn right onto Kings Avenue.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes, we met earlier in the season with the Street coming from behind twice in an entertaining encounter before Ross Cook fired in a lastminute winner. Prior to that the Planemaker’s had lost 6-1 at Foxcotte Park in September 2019 with goals from Luke Hooper, Jazz Beavis and Callum Sweeney put Street in a commanding first half lead but they had to wait until the 85th minute before Jason Silver scored, then substitute Solomon Mawo broke through and rounded the keeper to score in the 88th minute and Alex Dockree rounded off the scoring in the 5th minute of injury time. The Street’s last visit to Folland Park came in November 2017, when the Street ran out 7-3 winners with Zach Neve scoring a hat-trick, Craig Blakeman got a brace and Jamie Pollard and Callum Sweeney also scored. Billy Drever got a brace and Sanchez McLean also scored consolations for the Planemaker’s

welcome LAVERSTOCK & FORD

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Laverstock & Ford Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Bull Dogs make the journey to Foxcotte Park for the first time since a 4-2 defeat in January 2020, with a penalty from Jazz Beavis, followed up with further gaols from Alex Dockree, Gerson Ramos and Jason Silver. Jacob Rawkins had equalised before half-time, and Russ Jones also scored for the Bull Dogs. This evening’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with Laverstock looking to follow up their recent 2-0 victory over Petersfield Town and move up into the play-off places at the expense of the Street. Laverstock didn’t get off to the best of starts with a 4-2 defeat at New Milton Town, a 6-1 home win over Fleet Spurs was followed up with a 6-2 defeat at Ringwood Town. August was rounded off with a 5-3 defeat at Newport (IOW) and a 2-2 home draw with Petersfield Town. September started with a 4-2 home defeat to Romsey Town was followed up with a 5-0 win over rivals Downton. A 1-0 win away at Millbrook thanks to a Archie Lovegrove goal, 8 minutes into the second half secured the points.

Cup exits to AFC Portchester and to Downton in the League Cup and Wiltshire Senior Cup overshadowed a 4-0 FA Vase victory over Fawley. October started with a 4-0 win at home over Verwood Town and this was backed up with a 20 win over East Cowes at Beatrice Avenue and a 3-0 home win over the Street thanks to a hattrick from Russell Jones The Bull Dogs then exited the FA Vase to Liskeard Athletic before draws at Folland Sports and in their home derby encounter with Bemerton heath. Wins over Whitchurch United and Fawley were followed up with a 2-2 away draw at Verwood Town, before a 6-1 home win over Infinity and a 2-0 win over Totton & Eling rounded off November. December started with a 3-1 win at Ash United before a narrow 3-2 home defeat to Andover Town. Wins at Totton & Eling (4-0) and a home 4-2 victory over Millbrook rounded off 2021. 2022 started with a disappointing 3-0 defeat at neighbours Bemerton Heath before their 2-0 victory over Petersfield Town last Saturday, thanks to a second half brace for Russell Jones secured the win.

LAVERSTOCK – THE AREA Flint mines and signs of barrows have been discovered on Burrough's Hill, indicating settlement back to Neolithic time. There is also evidence of settlement during the Iron and Bronze Age. A Roman cemetery and settlement has been found on Cocky's Hill. Laverstock has two entries in the Domesday Book which indicate the settlement was then owned by Wilton Abbey with some parts owned by officers of the king. Milford Mill Bridge, linking the parish with Salisbury over the Bourne, dates from the 14th century and is Grade I listed. St Thomas's Bridge to the north was named for Thomas Becket who walked an ancient route through the settlement. It was built around 1700 and widened in 1900. Laverstock once boasted a number of large houses: Laverstock Hall, Laverstock House, Laverstock Hill and Burroughs Hill. Laverstock House was a large and noted private licensed madhouse from the 18th to the 20th century, owned by the Finch family. It closed in 1955 and has since been demolished as have Laverstock Hill and Laverstock Hall to provide modern residential development.

STREET 2-0 WHITCHURCH UNITED COOK 17, LOCK 24

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street started 2022 with a 2-0 win over neighbours Whitchurch United at Foxcotte Park. After a scrappy start the Street very much dominated possession. Ross Cook, back in the side after a three-week absence, controlled a long Reece Rusher cross, lost his footing, recovered and curled his shot past the angle of post and bar.

MOMENTS

Another Rusher cross was rather unconvincingly palmed clear by former Street keeper Chis Wing before the pressure paid off as early as the eleventh minute. Shane Lock collected the ball midway in the opposing half and the through ball split the defence with Ross Cook lifting the ball past the advancing Wing.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Another Lock pass sent Cameron Thatcher free on the left only for the shot to beat Wing and the far post before the score was doubled on 24 minutes. Cook fashioned a shooting chance for Harry Lawton, the shot was deflected over the keeper and Shane Lock turned the ball over the line with the defence completely flat footed. The first attack of note by the visitors sent Craig Rutledge clear on the right but he hesitated as goalkeeper Mike Weatherall narrowed the angle before scooping the ball wide of the post, Cook was inches wide from distance with Wing frantically back pedalling towards his goal and the striker followed that with a booking after a late challenge.

Rusher was narrowly wide from the edge of the area before the half ended with a long and powerful run from Rutledge which ended through lack of support. The second half started in the manner of the first with a Rusher cross that evaded three green shirts and another that was headed narrowly wide by Matt Scott who had momentarily abandoned his defensive duties. Wing was a long way out of his area to deny Rusher and dealt confidently with a number of crosses but could do nothing with a twenty-five-yard piledriver from Zach Hine that crashed against the post and rebounded to safety. Robbie Owen was just too high at one end, after the ball had carelessly been given away, before Weatherall was at full stretch to hold a Cameron George effort at the other. There were just two more efforts on goal before the final whistle. A Whitchurch corner caused a lengthy scramble in the sixyard box, with Thatcher hooking the ball off the line to prevent an own goal, and Wing acrobatically tipping an Owen header over www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet the crossbar.

BEMERTON HEATH H 1-2 STREET BISHOP 64

LAWTON 31, RAYFIELD OG 46

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street produced a stunning performance to beat league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2-1, thanks to a world class strike from Harry Lawton and an own goal just 56 seconds into the second half. Andover New Street were without the isolating Ross Cook and there was a rather cautious start to the game from both sides before Reece Rusher saw two efforts fly wide in quick succession. The first threat on goal came with two Bemerton corners, one punched clear by Mike Weatherall and the other somewhat overhit for a throw on the other side. The game was very much end to end, though with Bemerton looking the more dangerous, and then Street enjoyed a spell of possession in which Harry Lawton was inches wide with a volley from Rusher’s cross and Weatherall saved well from a header at the other end. After the save, what can only be described as a fracas occurred. The immediate outcome was a red card for Bemerton’s Ronan Clancy, for an incident involving Shane Lock. Harry Lawton sent one effort across the face of goal but on the half hour mark he collected a partially cleared free kick and rifled the ball into the roof of the net from some thirty yard - a “worldie” in the current terminology. The predatory Justin Bennett was denied the equaliser by a superb last-ditch challenge from Ashley James to leave Street ahead at the break.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

The second half could not have started better for Street as they doubled their lead in the opening sixty seconds. A long cross from the right caused consternation in the home area and the ball eventually went over the line with a defender getting the last touch for an own goal. Bemerton, seemingly deciding that attack was the best form of defence, began to control the midfield and use both flanks with Charlie Rayfield a. constant threat from his right back berth. Both sides made ample us of their substitutes, seemingly all in a matter of minutes, and midway through the fortyfive minutes the deficit was halved. Street had two chances to clear a left wing cross but could not get the ball away, and one of the substitutes, George Bishop, lifted the ball into the top of the net from somewhere near the penalty spot. New Street were now either sitting back, or being pushed back, and Weatherall saved well from Danny Young.

The victorious New Street side of 1993 after winning the North Hants Senior Cup against Stockbridge. Street went into a 2-0 0 lead in the opening five minutes thanks to a volley from Sean Rogers and the second the result of a goalmouth scramble converted by Chris Sutton. Stockbridge scored early in the second half but Sutton soon afterwards added to his tally t to make it 3-1. 1. Stockbridge grabbed a second goal 15 minutes from time thanks to midfielder Paul Appleton, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Street from claiming more silverware. The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith.

East Cowes continued to show some fight and netted their second of the match through their top scorer Jordan Browne.

Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by heavy defeats at Romsey and Christchurch. By the end of September the Street were just 1 point off top spot and were in 5th place. East Cowes were the next visitors and were second from bottom in 18th position with just 2 points out of 6 games.

Yates netted his second of the game on 84 minutes and four minutes later substitute Nic Turpin put in number six to complete the scoring. The victory would keep the Street in 5th place and how little did we know that they would go on to achieve promotion promot to the Wessex Premier for the first time in the club’s history.

The home side took just fifteen minutes to take the lead as Lock netted the opener. East Cowes however then came back into the game and equalised before half time after missing several clear chances.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS Baffins Milton Rovers aiming to join Horndean and Hamworthy in three-way tie at the top of the Wessex League

ALSO... Verwood appoint Darren Shepherd and Danny Tabor as co-managers

Rovers will move level on points with the top two if they can claim a seventh successive Premier Division victory against Bournemouth Poppies. The game was washed out last weekend at the PMC Stadium but has been hastily rearranged (7.45pm). Baffins normally play midweek home games on a Wednesday, but Rover’s boss Shaun Wilkinson explained: ‘Poppies actually turned up at the ground (on Saturday) before it was called off. We asked them if they could play midweek and they said they could play Tuesday, not Wednesday. As they’d come all that way, we basically let them pick the date. ‘With Hamworthy and Shaftesbury winning at the weekend, this is an important game. We’re top of the form table, but we’ve got two tricky games now (Baffins travel to Christchurch next Saturday). We’ll be saying to the players ‘don’t look at the league table - there’s no gimmes in this league.’ ‘It’s points over performance at this stage of the season but we still have to do the right things. ‘If we turn up, be professional and bring our ‘A’ game I don’t think there’s a team in the league who can live with us.’ It would be a major shock if Poppies avoided defeat. The Dorset club haven’t won for 15 league games, since a 2-1 victory against second bottom Amesbury in late September. They have only picked up two points from their last nine outings, one of which was a draw against Amesbury. Having recently signed veteran striker Craig McAllister, Wilkinson admits he would bolster Baffins’ first-ever serious Wessex title challenge with one more addition. ‘I’d like a defender, someone who could play anywhere across the back,’ he said. ‘I’ve only got out and out centre halves in Lee Molyneaux and Ed Sanders. We’ve got Josh Warren who’s a big asset, but he’s had long Covid and only played once all season.’ Wilkinson said Baffins would take promotion to the Southern League if they either won the title or finished runners-up and went up via a play-off. ‘I don’t think the club would ever turn it down,’ he remarked. ‘I think we’re a couple of years ahead of schedule. ‘There’s a long way to go yet. At the moment we’re contenders but any of the top seven are capable of putting together a run of eight or nine wins.’

Verwood Town have announced a new management team, bringing in Darren Shepherd and Danny Tabor from neighbours Wimborne Town. The Potters had been looking for a new manager since club legend Adie Arnold stepped down last month, with Arnold ending a near 30-year association with the club in order to retire from football. Shepherd and Tabor, alongside kit-man Paul Mitchell who has also joined the club, arrive from Wimborne, where they managed the club’s development side.

ROUND-UP Josh Bertie joins Dorchester Town from Andover Town on dual terms

FA Vase star Tom Price returns to US Portsmouth – with boss Tom Grice confessing: I did all I could NOT to re-sign him!

Boss Tom Grice has revealed he initially had no intention of bringing one of US Portsmouth’s FA Vase heroes back to the club. Goalkeeper Tom Price has returned to the Victory Stadium after being one of numerous players to follow ex-boss Glenn Turnbull to Moneyfields last summer. Price had started 14 of Moneys’ first 15 Wessex League games this season but lost his place last month after a 5-5 League Cup draw at Shaftesbury. Since then, Callum McGeorge has played in Moneys’ last four league games. Dorchester Town have added prolific striker Josh Bertie to their ranks on dual registration terms. British Virgin Islands international Bertie, 25, joins from Wessex League Division One title challengers Andover Town. Bertie has scored 31 goals in 26 games for the Bluebirds this campaign, and in October became Town's all-time top goal scorer. Scoring a brace against Fleet Town, in his 100th game for the Hampshire side, took his record to 56 goals. Bertie has since extended his tally to 71 in 112 games before Dorchester came calling. www.ansfc.co.uk

Grice said he knew Price wanted to leave Dover Road early last week but was not planning a move due to the form of young Dylan Kramer. That changed, though, when Kramer suffered a hamstring injury during last Tuesday’s Wessex loss at table topping Horndean. Grice tried to bring in a keeper for Saturday’s league game with Alresford but moves for Hawks’ Charlie Searle and Gosport’s Ellis Grant failed. In desperation, he put a message in a Wessex managers WhatsApp group chat on Friday - and Money’s boss Glenn Turnbull offered to waive the seven days’ notice if he wanted to sign Price. ‘It was totally my intention not to sign Pricey at all,’ Grice said. ‘I did speak to Tom, as he’s a friend of mine, and I said ‘Dylan’s my No 1, he’s been one of our best players this season. After Dylan got injured, I spent Wednesday and Thursday trying to find a keeper. I did everything I could NOT to sign Pricey! On the Friday Glenn phoned me up and offered Pricey. I think Tom’s glad to be back. Of all the players we lost last summer, Pricey was for me the biggest blow. He was probably the best out of all of them. He will be an asset to us on and off the pitch. We’re a young team and he’s got experience of playing at a higher level. It will be good to see him working with Dylan in training.’ Price will be USP’ seventh goalkeeper when he makes his second debut for the club in next Saturday’s home league game with Amesbury. Kramer has made 15 league appearances so far, while Damien Kelsall, Lewis Broughton, James Hedley, Roux Hardcastle and Owen Craig have also featured. He will be the 41st player used by US in a first team game - more than any of the other five Portsmouth area Wessex Premier clubs. Last season Price was one of the stars of US’ run to the Vase semis and Wessex League Cup final.

TOO MANY GAMES AT CHRISTMAS?

By Matt Badcock

Happy New Year and first we must ask: Is everything OK in the Premier League? It’s been difficult to open a newspaper, listen to the radio or watch the TV without hearing a topflight boss moaning about playing too many games over the festive period, bleating about a lack of players, not being able to use five subs in a game or even the League Cup schedule clogging up the calendar. Apparently, there is also concern about the fixture congestion after 18 games needed to be postponed in recent weeks. Although some welcome relief that UEFA will allow games to be played on the same nights as Champions League matches. Phew! That sound you can hear is a collective laugh from Non-League as a whole, including fixture secretaries who might lose twice that amount of games to bad weather in the space of three days. Look, it’s easy to take pot shots at the whinging managers. When they are paid as well as they are, have access to the best facilities in elite sports and can rotate their squads far more easily than they let on, they probably deserve a bit of dig in the ribs. Non-League managers and players will have a wry smile when thinking about the schedules their players, all while working proper day jobs around it, go through. I’ve always felt that if those at the top of the game are concerned about player welfare, then it should be listened to. It should also be pointed out that the TV money they benefit from is based on the fact they have to play a lot of games, particularly around the Christmas period where demand is high. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

But Christmas 2021 has also shown the interest for Non-League football, with crowds booming across the Pyramid. Four-figure crowds suddenly don’t seem all that unusual at Steps 4, 5 and even 6. And that’s key for clubs to boost the coffers. Festive football is such an important money spinner for all Non-League clubs where the pounds across the turnstiles and the second spend in the bar is so crucial. Fans flocking to grounds can probably be put down to a combination of factors. Apathy at the cost of higher football, thirst for live sport, people feeling comfortable in lower crowds are no doubt among a number of reasons. Hopefully people have also seen enough that they want to return regularly. There are plenty of games to come this season. And after the last two seasons were hit by Covid, you won’t hear much moaning about it down here. @AndoverNSfc

league look The only possible place to start is the FA Vase where, after today’s two matches. the League has two Clubs through to the last sixteen of the Competition. In front of a staggering attendance of 850 plus – where did they all park? – Brockenhurst defeated fellow Wessex League side New Milton 2-0 with the second half goals coming from Matt Sheedy and Alex Haynes. Delight for the Badgers, despair for New Milton, but the latter can be proud of the Vase exploits this season. At the County ground a superb second half performance saw Hamworthy United come from two goals down against visitors Glebe FC from Kent to win 3-2 thanks to goals from Steve Devlin, Eddie Hodge and Jamie Beasley. In Division One four of the top five in the table won with Follands leading the way with a 7-1 victory at Totton & Eling on Friday evening. Ethan Anders notched a hat trick with Tremayne Moore, Brad Johnson, Jake Newton and an own goal making it seven up and Sam Ellis scoring for the beleaguered home side. Newport matched that with a similar result against Downton with the game being played at East Cowes Vics. Again, there was a hat trick – from Connor Kelly – with two from Jordan Browne and singles credited to Joe Craig and Spike Pearce with Sam Howe replying for the visitors. Andover Town won by the odd goal in three at Fawley – Ben Bolton’s goal being bettered by Charles Medway and David Jerrard – and the only side to lose were the leaders Bemerton Heath. They were forced to play with ten men for three quarters of the game against Andover New Street at Moon Park, went 2-0 down to Harry Lawton and an own goal but in a spirited second half showing they could only score once through George Bishop.

48

Just outside the top five- two goals from Russell Jones gave Laverstock & Ford victory at Petersfield and Romsey Town achieved the same result at Fleet Spurs thanks to goals from Owen Holloway and Jack Odam. Cameron George gave Whitchurch the lead at Test Park but goals from Callum Drake and Johnny Macaulay saw Millbrook home and in the final game neither Ringwood Town nor East Cowes Vics could find the net. The match between Ash United and Infinity was postponed with the latter still struggling administratively. The position at the top of the table remains unchanged but Bemerton’s lead has been narrowed while Totton & Eling and Fleet Spurs are looking a little isolated at the bottom.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN The third Round of the FA Cup gets underway this weekend, arguably one of the most interesting stages of the competition. It is 150 years since the world’s oldest knockout cup was inaugurated, so the 2022 final is sure to be a special occasion. The cup was renowned for its romantic tales of bravery, heroic performances, and the spirit of the unexpected. That aspect of the competition seems to have been forgotten, giant-killings are hard to come by these days, and it is 42 years since West Ham United became the seventh and most recent second division (now Championship) team to lift the old trophy. The nearest we have to a cup final upset in recent years must be 2013’s victory by Wigan against Manchester City. It’s hard enough for teams outside the Premier to get as far as the last eight – in the past five years only three Championship sides (Bournemouth 2021, Swansea and Millwall in 2019), two League One and a nonleaguer (Lincoln) have managed to reach the quarterfinals. In the past 10 years, 63 of the 80 quarterfinalists have come from the Premier, 12 from the Championship, four from League One and there’s been a solitary non-league club. If you consider that the 1970s provided more surprises – three second division FA Cup winners – then a comparison with that decade may illustrate how the game has changed. The second tier has certainly

54

16 between 1970-71 and 1979-80. Some critics say the Premier clubs are not terribly interested in the FA Cup, but aside from fielding weakened sides – which are still too strong for most opponents – the facts don’t lie. In the past 10 years, the so-called “big six” clubs have filled 14 of 20 cup final places and since West Ham’s 1980 success, those half dozen clubs have won 83% of finals. West Ham, in 1980, won the FA Cup with a very decent team. Having been relegated in 1978, manager John Lyall had rebuilt his side and in 1979, added Queens Park Rangers’ Phil Parkes, Ray Stewart from Dundee United and Manchester United’s Stuart Pearson to his squad. West Ham’s cup run included some memorable victories against first division teams West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Everton. They went on to beat cup holders Arsenal who were contesting their third consecutive FA Cup final. A year later, the Hammers won the second division and reclaimed their place in the topflight. Can a Championship team win the FA Cup in the modern game? On average over the past five years, half of the division’s 24 teams fall at the third round and by the sixth round, there’s scarcely a team left. As the statistics confirm, the competition is being dominated by the elite clubs, so it really is time for one of those stories that created the magic of the FA Cup. Bring it on.
