JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for this afternoon’s encounter against Millbrook in Wessex League 1. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to manager Eugene McManus, his staff and players plus the committee and fans, who have made the journey to Andover today. Millbrook have made an impact in their first season in League 1 of the Wessex League and are in 12th position after the mid-week matches and I know they will be looking to push on and fight for a play-off spot come the end of the season.
Massive Fixture 4 games have passed since I had to put some notes together, I must say, the 4 games had it all. The ups and downs of football! Firstly we overcame a massive fixture at home to Folland Sports, where Ross Cook scored a last minute winner to make it 4-3; all round the lads were superb. Then we travelled to Fawley the following Wednesday and I must say the performance wasn’t great but we got the job done, I’d take a 31 win away from home in any fixture. At the end of the season we will look at results not how we played.
4
“WE WE TRAVELLED TO FAWLEY AND I MUST SAY THE PERFORMANCE WASN’T GREAT BUT WE GOT THE JOB DONE, I’D TAKE A 3--1 WIN AWAY FROM HOME IN ANY FIXTURE. AT THE END OF THE SEASON WE WILL LOOK AT RESULTS NOT HOW WE PLAYED.” .”
Sadly the performance rolled over to Laverstock…where, to be honest neither team looked like doing anything but then Lavvy scored and we completely crumbled, by far our worst performance of the season, it was really disappointing and a big bump back down to earth after being unbeaten in the league since the opener. Somehow I had to get the lads up for what was our biggest game in New Street’s recent history, an FA Vase away trip to Cribbs FC in the first round proper! Well they didn’t disappoint. I changed the shape and personnel slightly and tried to get them to play a way that could have a chance against a side that were top of the league above! I’d watched quite a lot on YouTube of Cribbs and got an idea of how they’d play, I went with what I thought could counter that and it worked, the lads were fantastic. We wanted it far more than them and sometimes it comes down to that, they didn’t have an answer to what we threw at them. A massive thanks to the travelling support and the club and staff for supporting throughout the whole game! I’ve been involved with this club for many years and that was really up there with the best of them. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM
WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD
I would like to wish all supporters a warm welcome back to our Foxcotte Park home this afternoon. It seems like ages ago since we played Folland Sports here and produced another fine display. This was followed with a great win against Fawley. We didn’t have the greatest of games there but we came away with the three points and sometimes you have to win ugly if you want to achieve success. Last Saturday’s memorable performance in the FA Vase was a very proud moment for myself and for all the committee members and volunteers. I thought we played extremely well and although were guilty of missing a few chances. We restricted Cribbs to few chances at the other end.
6
Today we look to produce another performance like Saturday as we aim to get back into the play-off places after last week’s league results saw a couple of teams leap frog us, although they have played at least one game more than us. The Dockers come here today looking to improve their current mid table position and will provide a stern test for our side this afternoon. The win against Cribbs has presented us with a home draw in the 2nd round of the FA Vase against Wessex Premier side Hamworthy United. It’s a tough draw but any team you face in this competition will be tough. The tie will take place on the 20th of November, with a 3pm kick-off. Make sure you’re here to cheer the lads on what I’m sure will be another memorable occasion here at Foxcotte Park. We have also had confirmation this week that the draw for the North Hants Quarter-Finals has been made and we have a home tie against Andover Town, a date has yet to be agreed.
One of the great things about our club is that we are giving the younger players more chances to progress. I am probably old-fashioned, but I love to see young players developed by our system make it to the first team. I am proud of the number of youngsters that are knocking on the first team door, with the likes of Cam Thatcher, Joe Rogers and Ross Belbin staking claims to be in the regular first team squad.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT
It’s good to be back at Foxcotte Park – it seems ages since we were last playing on home soil when we scored an injury time winner against fellow promotion candidates Folland Sports.
I think it says a lot about our character that we were able to come back the way we did against the Planemakers after taking an early lead and then going 2-1 down before half-time, before getting back level through Cookie’s penalty, only to go behind again 3-2 late on and then scoring twice late on to snatch the points shows how far we have come as a team. No disrespects to anyone but we would not have come back from going 3-2 down late on last season.
Achievement Last Saturday we made the long trip to Cribbs in the FA Vase and returned home with our name in the hat for the next round, following an excellent all-round performance. After missing several chances in the first half and restricting Cribbs to few clear opportunities we took the lead halfway through the second half when Cookie got clear and then Lockey made up for the earlier misses when he fired us further in front. It was about time he found the score sheet – but joking aside, regardless of his goal tally he has been in exceptional form for us with his energy in midfield. www.ansfc.co.uk
I want to also mention the return of AP in defence alongside me. It shows how well Lewey Alderman has been playing as he has been keeping AP out of the side following his suspension for the red card against Cowes Sports. AP was outstanding on Saturday and an dealt with everything Cribbs threw at us. There might have even been a few bricks thrown our way but AP is known to be a Header of bricks with his magic hat on!
“I THINK IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT OUR CHARACTER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO COME BACK THE WAY WE DID AGAINST THE PLANEMAKERS.”
facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet
Finally I’d d like to say a huge thank you to those supporters who made the long journey jo to Cribbs. The level of support is phenomenal and the noise you made during the game and afterwards when hen we came to see you was deafening. deafeni It was a great day not only for the club but for the players as well; some of the younger lads wouldn’tt have experienced that before so it all bodes well for our future. Please get behind us again this afternoon, your vocal support can make a difference today. Most importantly, enjoy njoy the game and stay safe.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT SATURDAY WHEN THEY MAKE THE TRIP TO SOUTH TO PLAY RINGWOOD TOWN AT THE MACRA COMMUNITY STADIUM
RINGWOOD TOWN WHO? Ringwood Town, aka the Town, from Long Lane, are the Street’s opponents next Saturday. Richard Morse’s side lost 2-1 against Andover Town last Saturday and currently lie in fourteenth place in League 1. .HOW THEY DOING? After a shaky start with defeats to new boys Millbrook and a 6-1 home defeat to Downton, The Town then impressively won 6-2 at home to last season leaders Laverstyock & Ford, but the Town’s league form has been inconsistent so far this season. That inconsistency is shown in recent weeks a 4-3 home victory over Infinity thanks to a Harry Smith hat-trick was followed up with a 2-0 defeat to Petersfield Town, Brandon Jewell scoring in the second half after Ryan Kennedy had given Petersfield the lead in the 33rd minute. The Town have also exited the FA Vase to Downton (1-2) and the Russell Cotes Cup to AFC Stoneham (0-4).
WHERE? The Street make their first trip to Long Lane in two years. The Street faithful have a 100-mile round-trip to get there and back. It is pay on the day for Street fans and details can be found on the opposite page. There is seating in the main stand on the halfway line opposite the dugouts. The Town’s home record this season currently stands with 2 wins and 3 defeats in their five matches at home, scoring 14 goals but conceding 17.
10
HOW TO GET THERE? From Andover take the A303 East towards Basingstoke before taking the A34 south and then taking the M3 south towards Southampton. At junction 13, use the left two lanes towards the Southampton Docks/Bournemouth. Then merge onto the M27. Continue onto the A31, then after 8.2 miles turn onto Pickett Hill. Continue onto Hightown Hill and then Hightown Road. Just before half a mile turn left onto Crow Lane and follow the road to the left to stay on Crow Lane. Then after 0.6 miles turn right onto Moortown Lane. Long Lane is then 0.5 miles on the left and the ground is on the left handside.
HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? The
Street won on their last Wessex League visit to Long Lane in December 2019, winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Matt Scott and a 87th minute winner from Gerson Ramos on his league debut for the Street. Overall the Street have only won 3 times of their 12 visits to Long Lane, with two of those victories coming in their last two visits. The second victory was during the promotion season in 2018 when we won 3-1 at Long Lane with goals from Callum Sweeney, Zach Hine and Jazz Beavis. The Town’s consolation goal coming from Ben Harris. The other victory came in March 2005 with the Street winning 3-2.

welcome MILLBROOK FC
It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Millbrook Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Dockers make the journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time since their only other visit to Foxcotte Park in 2018. That evening, under their old name, Bush Hill they won 2-1 in the Russell Cotes Cup. This afternoon’s match promises to be a an entertaining game with Millbrook coming into the game in mid table, having made an impressive start to their first season in Wessex League 1. They got off to the perfect start with a 2-0 home win against Ringwood Town, thanks to goals from Callum Drake and Noel McCarthyGardiner. A 3-0 away win at fellow ex Hampshire League side Infinity, Drake was again on target with a Mark Barker brace completing the scoring. They then were brought down to earth somewhat with a 7-2 home defeat against current league leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins, Barker again with another brace Defeats in the Hampshire Senior Cup and Wessex League Cup followed, along with a 7-1 defeat at home to Andover Town.
14
Another home defeat to a resurgent Laverstock & Ford preceded an exit from the FA Vase to Wessex Premier side Shaftesbury. The Dockers will be buoyed by wins away at Fawley AFC (4-2) 2) and at home to Newport IOW (5-2) and a thumping 6-0 0 home win over Ash United. Barker continuing his fine scoring form with a hat-trick, trick, with McCarthy-Gardner McCarthy scoring twice and substitute Owen Garrity finding the net. Newport IOW did gain revenge for their earlier defeat with a 4-2 2 victory at Smallbrook Stadium. Barker’s brace was cancelled out by Connor Kelly’s brace and further goals from Jordan Browne and Joe Craig. Last Saturday the Dockers hosted high flying Folland Sports and lost out in an entertaining nine goal thriller with Matt Barker with two goals and also Perry Harding and Greg King on the score sheet. Manager Eugene McManus has already etched his name into the Dockers history books by guiding them to the Wessex League for the first time and also being successful in the Hampshire Premier for a number of years going back to when they were promoted in 2014.

Millbrook is a suburb and former civil parish of Southampton. As the area developed, several settlements grew within the parish, some of them becoming parishes in their own right, thus reducing the extent of the Millbrook parish. As well as the Millbrook of today, the original Millbrook parish included Freemantle, Regents Park, and Redbridge. Some of these areas are still referred to as being part of Millbrook. The brook that Millbrook was named after is now known as Tanner's Brook. Millbrook as a district is split by the A35 dual carriageway, Tebourba Way. DEFINING
MOMENTS
WORD ON THE STREET SELECTS 3 KEY MOMENTS THAT HAVE SHAPED THE DOCKERS RECENT ERA
2014 HANTS DIV 1 CHAMPIONS! Millbrook (or then known as Bush Hill) joined the Hampshire Premier League as founder members of the new division one and proceeded to continue their success from the Southampton Saturday League by clinching the title with 48 points and 87 goals scored. They only lost 2 games all season and won the remaining 16 games to finish above Hamble Club by six points and clinch promotion to the Premier Division.
2017 HANTS PREMIER CHAMPIONS! After two seasons finishing in 5th place, the Dockers take the league by storm and power to the title with only 3 defeats out of the 28 league games played. They win an impressive 24 matches, scoring 79 and conceding just 29 all season. The only disappointment that season is an early defeat to Liphook United in the League Cup 1st round, with Liphook progressing via a 5-4 penalty shootout after the game finished 1-1.
To find out more about Millbrook visit: www.millbrookfc.com
2019 THE LEAGUE & CUP DOUBLE! The Dockers piped Infinity to the League title by 3 points. Infinity would gain revenge in the League Cup by knocking out Millbrook 2-1 in the semi-finals and clinching the League Cup by beating Lyndhurst 4-2 in the final. Eugene McManus side would seal the title by beating Infinity in the title decider 4-0 three days later. Perry Harding would score twice and Mark Barker and Callum Drake also on target. The Dockers would also clinch the Hampshire Intermediate Cup with a 4-1 victory in the final over Whitecroft & Barton Sports.

scout report
Millbrook finally celebrated promotion to the Wessex League in the summer, receiving the nod from the FA, after dominating the Hampshire Premier Division since gaining promotion in 2014.
PHILLIPS
LAVENDER
Having won an incredible 12 titles since their formation in 2002, they joined the Hampshire League in the 2013/14 season from the Southampton Saturday League, where they had been extremely successful. As founder members of the new Division One at the time, Millbrook secured the title in their first season, only losing 2 of their 18 games and scoring 87 goals. Having won promotion to the Wessex Premier, a couple of 5th place finishes followed before the club clinched the title in the 2016/17 season and so nearly retained the title the following season but fell short to Paulsgrove. They did however, win the title back the following season (2018-19). That was the last time the title was awarded as despite strong starts to the following seasons, both would be abandoned due to Covid-19. A closer look at Millbrook’s season so far The Dockers are exactly in mid-table in the 11th position on 15 points, 4 points behind New Milton. There are just 3 points that separate New Milton in 10th place and the Street currently in 4th on 22 points, although both Street and Andover Town have at least a game in hand on most of the sides in the top 10. Looking at Millbrook’s away form, they have won 2 and lost 3 of their 5 away matches so far, scoring 10 goals but conceding 17. Their home form is similar with 3 wins and 3 defeats so far with 16 goals scored and 17 conceded. How will they play? Who are their danger men? Youngster Kai Phillips will probably start in goal after recently replacing former number one, Ben Puleo. The Millbrook defence will consist of centre backs James Lavendar and Ben Baddams, while Harvey Thomas will likely be left-back. The Dockers midfield should be made up of captain

WHAT’S THE STORY? Ross Cook struck in injury-time to secure a valuable six points against fellow promotion chasers Folland Sports in an entertaining 7 goal thriller at Foxcotte Park. In front of a crowd of 127, Street got off to a flying start when Cook picked up a through ball from Shane Lock to fire past the exposed Follands keeper after just 3 minutes. Folland replied back on 14 minutes when the Street midfield struggled to get back and Nathan Gray was found unmarked in the penalty area to supply a neat finish. And just after the half-hour mark they took the lead when Fabio Manuel cut in from the left to finish past O’Brien. The second half saw Street come out on the front foot and after Matt Scott was too high with an effort following a goal mouth scramble, the Street levelled in the 70th minute when substitute Danny Urry was upended by a clumsy challenge in the box and Cook sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot. Both sides did not appear to want a draw with substitutes from both sides used to good effect and after Cook grazed the bar at one end Follands regained the lead with an all too simple goal. A diagonal ball in from the left, the defence and goalkeeper froze and the tall Ethan Anders rose to steer the ball home with just eight minutes remaining. Five of those eight minutes had gone when New Street were awarded another free kick on the edge of the area, Whether the Follands wall was mis-aligned was difficult to tell from the side lines but Reece Rusher’s shot seemed to curl past the wall and low in to the bottom corner. 3-3 and a draw looked probably a fair result but still the icing on the cake was to come as far as New Street were concerned. Into stoppage time and Mikey Davis’s persistence won a corner on the left that he really had no right to win, Rusher’s kick cleared everybody in the box and Cook, outside the far post, took one touch and lashed the ball home to complete his hat trick. spark home euphoria and just precedefacebook.com/AndoverNewStreet the final whistle. www.ansfc.co.uk

WHAT’S THE STORY? Lightening struck twice as Ross Cook made it back-to-back hat-tricks and ensured Street kept up their league run of 9 straight wins, despite a below par performance. Cook opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he played a 1-2 with Shane Lock on the edge of the box and the ball sat nicely for the striker to fire home off the inside of the post.
MOMENTS
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?
Danny Urry was introduced early in the second half as the Street looked to get the second goal. Rusher was clattered into in the penalty area after a jinking run down the left but the referee waved play on. Street keeper Sean O’Brien then went off injured to be replaced by Michael Weatherall. Rusher was then sin binned after dissent with the referee with just over 15 minutes to go.
Weatherall then had to make a great double save but from the following corner, a free header for the unmarked Tom Raferty levelled the score. With Fawley on the front foot, the Street broke forward and Shane Lock beat his marker to the ball and was kicked on the back of the foot but stayed on his feet. The referee was quick to point to the spot and Cook was ice cold as he dispatched the penalty to give the Street the lead again. Fawley started to take risks at the back and with Rusher back on the pitch, the Street broke forward again and Cook was able to find space on the left and was played in to score past the keeper to ensure the 3 points and a move up into 2nd place in the league table. During the celebrations, a skirmish occurred with Fawley’s Tom Munday receiving a red card and Danny Urry receiving a yellow.

PEARSON DELIGHTED WITH RETURN Adam Pearson only made a cameo appearance in the midweek win at Fawley but he was delighted to get back on the pitch after his red card at Cowes Sports and following suspension, which resulted in him being out of the side for longer than expected following the form of his replacement Lewis Alderman. “Lewes come into the side and played well,” said Pearson. “He’s been a rock at the back and it’s no surprise that he picked up the Player of the Month award of September. His form has been excellent.” “It’s was frustrating for me as it was a very harsh red card against Cowes. The club backed me in appealing it with the video evidence but it was turned down. I then had to watch from the sidelines as we continued our great run of results.” The tall defender was forced to come on late in the midweek match at Fawley when Alderman went off injured, at a time when Street had just come back into the game and got back in front through Ross Cook’s penalty. “It’s not easy coming on into games when it’s that frantic and we were entering the final stages of the game. We had just got back in-front when Lockey was fouled and Cooky has done what he always does and dispatched the penalty away, so it was crucial we didn’t make any mistakes to cost us the points at that late stage.” “Thankfully we managed to defend their onslaught and caught them on the break to seal the win. It was important to keep that momentum going and the win moved us up into second place. There is a long way to go but we need to be in and around the top places come the latter part of the season.”

“Hopefully Hopefully Lewes going to be ok, he’s he in the best possible e hands with Pete and he should be back fighting for a place in the side fairly soon. It’s It good to have that competition for places as it keeps you on your toes. You’re You only one bad game or a suspension away from being out of the side.” side “When you aren’tt in the team it can be tough but your there supporting the other 11 players that are on the pitch. As the gaffer keeps saying that there are plenty of games coming thick and fast not just in the league but we have the trip to Cribbs in the FA Vase soon to look forward to as well so everyone will get the game time, those not in the side just need to be patient.”

Shane Lock was on target against Bush Hill
This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by a heavy defeat at Romsey and a narrow exit of the FA Vase at Tadley Calleva. The distraction of the League Cup gave manager John Smith the opportunity to give some of the fringe players a start and this was also the case in the Salisbury Hospital Cup, which Amesbury Town progressed with a 4-0 win. The league continued to be the main priority with a 6-2 home win over East Cowes Vics was quickly followed by back-to-back defeats at New Milton (0-1) and a thumping 4-0 home defeat to Ringwood Town. There was further progression in the League Cup with a 1-0 home win over Wessex Premier side Lymington Town, thanks to a late Jazz Beavis goal in the 85th minute.

Street gained ed revenge for the New Milton 72 FIXTURES defeat earlier inAND the RESULTS season as they won 2-0 2 in the return withprogress goals from Gunner Yates Follow game the Street throughout 2021/22 and Shane Lock in the second half. Another cup distraction raction came in the Russell Cotes Cup, which saw Street paired with Hampshire Premier side Bush Hill. Bus Hill were in the middle of a purple patch and were flying in the league, but it was the Street that were flying as they took an early lead in the 10th minute when Shane Lock Lo scored. Bush Hill did not look overawed by the occasion and equalised in the first half through Levi Mulligan and then turned the tables on the Street when they then went in front halfway through the second half, again through Mulligan The Street tried to battle back but could not find a way past the Bush Hill defence and it would be the Southampton side that would progress to the next round where they faced a strong Sholing side,, who were then in the Wessex Premier and would go on to win 5-0 5 against Bush Hill. Kevin Brewster and Alex Sawyer with 2 goals each and Rory Wood with the goals.

THE PROGRAMME The Street produced a colourful 24-page programme for the visit of Bush Hill priced at £1. Manager John Smith, in his notes pointed out Bush Hill’s threat as they were currently unbeaten in the league, but also noted that the Street were capable of putting together a decent run and show the character and resilience that the side has in abundance. There was a match reports on win against New Milton, while striker Zach Neve gave his thoughts on his Street Team-Mates. Christchurch at Hurn Bridge.

WESSEX LEAGUE
LATEST NEWS No easy rides for Horndean in 'most competitive' Wessex League Premier Division for several seasons
Roach seals Royales Move
Horndean manager Michael Birmingham believes the Wessex League Premier Division is the most competitive it's been for a number of years this season. Horndean head into it having been held to a 0-0 draw by rivals AFC Portchester on Saturday despite Steve Ramsey being shown a straight red card for the visitors inside two minutes. As a result, Birmingham's men dropped down a place to third in the table with Baffins Milton Rovers leapfrogging them after a weekend win at Amesbury. And, with ninth-placed Alton visiting Five Heads Park next, the Horndean boss is expecting another tough run-out in what he deems as one of the most competitive Wessex Premier's for several seasons. Birmingham said: ‘Alton have been outstanding. They’ve got great honesty, they’ve got a very, very good manager who knows his stuff, the boys certainly play for him - they’re going to be a very difficult team to play against. ‘They’re not going to be easy, there are no easy games in this league, this league is probably the most competitive it’s been for a good six or seven years. ‘You had Sholing and Sholing were outstanding, apart from those couple of years, it’s been competitive. This now, I think it’s a really competitive league.’ Horndean had both Tommy Tierney and Alfie Lis forced off through injury in the weekend stalemate with Portchester and they will have to wait to see if either are available to face Alton. But Birmingham is hopeful of being able to call on some of the several first-teamers who missed the Royals meeting against Alton.

Folland Sports striker Clayd Roach has signed for Wessex Premier AFC Portchester. The Pacey Striker/Winger is current top scorer in the Wessex League 1 and will bring plenty of goals to the Portchester attack, scoring 16 in 9 starts this season! The Planemakers, who currently sit in second place in the league are surely to miss Roach’s goals as he nearly has scored half the sides total goals this season – 39. Roach’s last appearance for Folland Sports was back in mid September, when he was substituted during the 41 defeat at Bemerton Heath Harlequins
ROUND-UP Fareham Town hoping for similar feeling at Cams Alders
Pete Stiles is refusing to look too far ahead as Fareham Town hope for a repeat of their last home performance when they welcome Shaftesbury on Saturday. Fareham produced a stunning victory to defeat Jersey Bulls on penalties to progress to the second round of the FA Vase last weekend. “Every game is a tough game in this division at the moment, we’ll just have to keep going. It’s not the end of the world a draw at the moment. It’s a long, long season with funny twists and turns to go yet.”

Moneyfields FC thank local football community for their support Moneyfields FC have thanked the local football community for their support and donations after one of their players was the victim of a serious assault. The Portsmouth-based club have been inundated with messages of goodwill since news broke that defender Stanlie Hopkins was hospitalised after an incident in the Red Lion pub car park in Cosham on Monday. An online Crowfunder set up by the club to raise £1,000 for the player – who remains in hospital in Southampton – has already seen that total passed in only a few hours. Portsmouth FC have also donated a signed shirt to be auctioned or raffled off, while former Blues players Christian Burgess and Ben Close have donated shirts and boots. Moneys first team boss Glenn Turnbull said: ‘We’ve been blown away by the support. ‘I’m not really surprised, it’s what the football community does. Everyone is friends off the park. That’s the good thing about being in a football club - people will come together as a group when you need them. We must have had over 100 messages of goodwill and people asking if there’s anything they can do. Ninety nine per cent of the time you’ll never need to ask, but it’s good to know the support is there if we do.”
ALSO... Ben Hatch has stepped down as 1st team manager of Christchurch.
The Crowdfunding page was set up earlier today and has already raised over £1,100.
He has been replaced by ex manager Graham Kemp, who has teken over on a temporary basis.
Moneyfields’ Wessex League rivals Baffins Milton Rovers have donated £100, while AFC Stoneham and Andover New Street have also donated. Portsmouth Sunday League club The Meon have also given £100.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 FOOTBALL FILMS.... 10 MARADONA (2019)
It was a cinematic marriage made in heaven. Volatile Argentina football legend Diego Maradona opening up his life for equally mercurial Serbian director Emir Kusturica, who followed the Pibe de Oro across Buenos Aires in this enthralling documentary. The filmmaker could be accused of getting a little too close to his subject; the mutual understanding between the two temperamental artists at times grates, as Kusturica willfully glosses over the less savoury details of Diego's life in favour of presenting the myth. But he is redeemed by some truly brilliant scenes.
9 FOOTBALL FACTORY (2004)
Not all football films deal with what happens inside the pitch. Some of the most popular titles of the last few years prefer to highlight the dark side of our game: the hooligans. Enter The Football Factory, based on John King's novel, a dystopian interpretation of the Chelsea firm full of petty theft, cocaine abuse and casual racism. The film charts Danny Dyer's descent into a state of extreme paranoia after an unfortunate encounter with the family of Tamer Hassan, head of the hooligan outfit for bitter rivals Millwall. The movie closes with a brutal pitched battle arranged before a ChelseaMillwall cup clash, and a rendition of The Jam's "Going Underground" is the perfect way to end any film.
8 ESCAPE TO VICTORY (1981)
It might not be the most polished piece of film ever to grace the big screen, but Escape to Victory provides plenty of enjoyment to those willing to suspend their
38
disbelief somewhat. The plot sees Caine play the role of a British POW and former professional footballer, roped into organising an exhibition game against the guards, which quickly turns into a publicity stunt for the German authorities. Against all odds, the ragtag side, bolstered by the inclusion of Pele and most of the Ipswich Town first-team squad of the early 1980s, come back from 41 down to secure an agonising draw. Not only that, but the heroes take advantage of a pitch invasion at the final whistle to escape their captors' clutches, Stallone provoking madness with a frankly improbable save that keeps the game level. Unmissable.
7
MEAN MACHINE (2001)
6
LOOKING FOR ERIC
Taking broadly the same premise as Escape to Victory, Mean Machine changes the setting from a POW camp to a grim, modern British prison for this Vinnie Jones vehicle. In this remake of American football flick The Longest Yard, Jones plays a former England captain who is haunted by allegations of match-fixing as his career went into a tailspin. An assault on a police officer leads to him being banged up alongside convicts who resent his betrayal and champagne lifestyle, but he finds redemption after being roped in to coach his inmate friends against the guards. From that point it's fairly predictable, underdog-comes-through-to-win fare we've seen in millions of sports movies, but the journey and the ragtag characters of the prison keep the action light-hearted and energetic. Watch out for Jason Statham, who adopts an almost unintelligible Scottish accent to play the team's unhinged, martial artsobsessed goalkeeper with a grudge.
(2009)
This Ken Loach film is not so much about what happens on the pitch, rather an essay on the nature of fanaticism itself and how the game provides an escape from the drudgery of regular life. Cantona-obsessed Eric Bishop slowly watches his life fall apart as he contends with a dead-end job, a strained relationship with his ex-wife and a son who appears to be slipping further under the wing of a local drug baron. The turning point, however, comes after smoking his boy's marijuana, when he sees the Gallic genius turn up and start to give him advice. The film is gritty and escapist at the same time, and the ex-Manchester United legend's superbly hammy acting lights up the screen with every appearance.
5
ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTUARY PORTRAIT (2006)
As arguably the greatest French player in football history, it was perhaps inevitable that Zinedine Zidane would sooner or later be given the documentary treatment in his home nation. The result in A 21st Century Portrait, however, is far from a one-sided adoration of the ex-Real Madrid star. Zidane reduces the story of his subject to just a single game in his career, a Liga clash against Villarreal in 2005, where the midfielder was sent off for his part in a brawl. Zizou is followed around for every minute of the match by 17 synchronised cameras, and the filmmakers achieve a breathtakingly austere portrait of the player, captured on camera like never before. Add to these glorious visuals an understated acoustic soundtrack prepared by Mogwai, and you have a powerful piece of arthouse cinema that is well worth a look.
3
FEVER PITCH (1997)
2
THE DAMNED UNITED
Many critics hold up this study of an Arsenal fan whose life revolves around his club as an exemplary study into the phenomenon of middle-class middle fanaticism, as events in the last 20 years have forced football to diversify from its traditionally working base. base Fever Pitch, based on Nick Hornby's book of the same name, follows Paul as he juggles a job as a teacher and a newlynewly blossoming relationship with his love for the Gunners that paralyses him on matchdays. The action culminates with Paul watching his beloved ed team take on Liverpool in the last game of the season, mirroring the final in 1989 when the London club struck to win the title in injury time. It's a gripping, enthralling film, not to be confused with a dreadful remake starring Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore that moves the focus to Boston and the Red Sox.
(2009)
4
THE GOAL! TRILOGY
(2005, 2007, 2009)
This 300-minute marathon could well be dubbed the Lord of the Rings of professional football. Across three films, Goal! charts the story of Santiago Munez, a Mexican immigrant living in Los Angeles who works as a gardener but dreams of making the most of his outrageous talents on the pitch. His dreams come true when he wins the opportunity of a trial with Newcastle United, and while he struggles with the rain and cold of the British North East, Munez slowly makes a name for himself in his adopted nation. There are plenty of slowmotion moments and plenty of agonising last-minute goals, as Santi earns Newcastle a place in the Champions League, proving his worth. The next films see a move to Real Madrid, an appearance at the World Cup finals and, as the title probably suggests, no shortage of goals, goals and more goals. The trilogy will not be showing up on any critics' shortlists, but global takings of over $35 million for the first two films alone prove that football can bring in the audiences.

Legendary English manager Brian Clough is remembered almost as much for his volatile, eccentric temperament as he is for his brilliance from the bench. The Damned United tries to capture both sides of the late ex-Nottingham Nottingham Forest and Derby County trainer, focusing on one of the darkest eras of Cloughie's career. The film tells the story of the 44 days Clough spent as manager of Leeds United in 1974, an era that has gone down as one of the most infamous, controversial spells in football history. Already an unpopular figure with the Elland Road players and fans, the new manager's methods and abrasive personality led to almost open warfare in the dressing room, before he was sacked just over a month into his stay. Michael Sheen is a force of nature in the main role, exposing Clough's insecurities and bluster as he struggled against the tide in his new club while keeping his human side intact. Other were not so happy: Dave ve Mackay sued the producers over what he saw as an inaccurate portrayal in the film.

1 MIKE BASSETT: ENGLAND MANAGER
A clever piece of cinema that revels in subverting the usual expectations of underdog sports movies. Mike Bassett tells the story of an uncouth, foul-mouthed lower league coach who finds himself in England's top job, and all hell breaks loose as he prepares them for the World Cup. A comedy of errors ensues as the protagonist, played by a perfectly-cast Ricky Tomlinson, goes from disaster to disaster at the helm. Whether its calling up two useless midfielders Benson and Hedges, due to a confusion stemming from a team list written on the back of a cigarette packet, or the star of the team getting romantically involved with a Brazilian transexual, nothing can go right for the hapless manager. There is redemption at the end. England do not win the World Cup, but a respectable defeat to Brazil in the semi-final restores Bassett's reputation and ensures his family can once more leave the house without being abused and pelted with fruit. The manager comes home with his head held high and changes his previous decision to resign in favour of staying with the Three Lions.
Travellers’ EDITOR KEVIN PIPKIN TELLS HIS STORY OF THE STREET’S GAME AT FAWLEY...
TALES
FAWLEY AFC ● WEDNESDAY 13th OCTOBER BER 2021 THE JOURNEY An unusual Wednesday night trip to Fawley, I’m use to Tuesday night midweek matches. The journey down seems to drag on for some reason, but the traffic is not too bad apart from at Romsey, where the traffic backs up near the football ground. We make good time and arrive just after 6pm, even though we miss the entrance to the car park, due to not recognising the place as one of the buildings has been knocked down near the car park. THE GROUND Fawley’s ground remains the same with port cabins being expertly used for changing rooms and also for the clubhouse facilities. The pitch is in good condition but we are playing there before the wintery conditions arrive and the pitch can get boggy during that time.
There is stilll the seated stand across the pitch from the dugouts and also two sheltered areas for standing in on either sides of the dugouts. THE FOOD The refreshment kiosk offered hot or cold drinks, as well as the usual chocolate bars. I bought myself a tea, which was priced at £1.50. THE PROGRAMME A 32 page full colour programme is on offer for the usual £1. The cover is an excellent James Bond sniper scope with the title “No Time To Lose”,, a spin on the new James Bond film. The Oilers produce a different cover based on a different film each time. This programme is the one produced from the original fixture 2 weeks before There is a nice welcome message for the Street from the club Chairman, who may or may not have attended as he was w in Spain according to his notes and there is the club history and a couple of interviews with Fawley players. THE MATCH A Ross Cook goal early on gives us the lead but we fail to double our advantage, despite having a clear penalty ignored by the ref. He further frustrates the players ayers when Cam Thatcher is clearly fouled but Reece Rusher oversteps the mark and is sin-binned. sin Our worst fears are realised when Fawley equalise and look odds on to win but then a soft penalty and a late breakaway see the Street take the points and another hat-trick trick for Rossi Cook. MAN-OF-THE-MATCH Has to be Ross Cook but in honesty we didn’tt play that well but still sti have 3 points to move us up the table into 2nd place.

Premier Non-League League
By Sam Emery
Stourbridge did something a little unusual last week. The Southern League Premier Central club appointed Leon Broadhurst and Stuart Pierpoint as joint-managers – something seldom seen in English football. The pair are no strangers at the War Memorial Athletic ground. Broadhurst is the Glassboys’ leading appearance holder with 780 in total while Pierpoint has four fruitful seasons at the club. They’ve been playing Non-League football for 20 years and were both still turning out this season – Broadhurst with Bromsgrove Sporting and Pierpoint at Coalville Town. The popular duo had always said they would go into management together and once Stourbridge approached them it was near impossible to turn down. Their return to the club has brought excitement added to by a 3-0 victory over Lowestoft Town last weekend in their first game in charge, but how will the uncommon approach of being joint-managers work in the long-term? “We’ve been close friends and played together for many years so we know our skillsets,” Broadhurst told The NLP. “The first training session it fell into place without our different skills. It was brilliant to see how Stu concentrated on one area and I concentrated on another.” Pierpoint added: “We didn’t really verbalise how it was going to work because it’s a learning curve for both of us. There will be different elements we’re probably not aware of at the moment that will come up.

“But, as Leon said, we do have different skillsets which will benefit us. We have a very similar outlook and similar approach with regards to our expectations and how we see s the future. “However, in terms of how we undertake the role we have different traits that we can bounce off each other. It’s all about open communication. We’re not going to agree on everything but that’s great as well.” In the Premier League and Football Footba League there aren’t any managerial partnerships with only Danny and Nicky Cowley coming closest, having worked their way through Non-League, Non although older brother Danny is officially ‘manager’. Doug Livermore and Ray Clemence were once first-team bossess at Tottenham Hotspur but both were soon axed before Gerard Houlier and Roy Evans took charge of Liverpool in 1998, and Evans quickly resigned. There are plenty of successful examples outside of the EFL. Chester bosses Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley have ave won five promotions together at Ramsbottom United and Salford City while Neil Baker and Jon Underwood have taken Slough Town from Step 4 to National League South. Carl Withers and Jamie McClurg led Binfield to last season’s FA Vase final and promotion from Step 5. Rick Andrews and Angelo Harrop, in their short time in charge of AFC Sudbury this year, reached the FA Cup first round proper and are going well in the Isthmian League North. Broadhurst and Pierpoint have the makings of another successful duo as more Non-League Non clubs will be asking themselves, is two better than one?

league look A very successful day for the Wessex League Clubs in the Buildbase FA Vase with nine of the fifteen Clubs that were in action through to the Second Round Proper on the 23rd November, three of them from the First Division and it is with those that we will commence our round up. Pride of place goes jointly to Andover New Street and New Milton Town who both won away against higher ranked opposition who are going well in their own Leagues, New Street travelled to the outskirts of Bristol and defeated Hellenic League leaders Cribbs by the odd goal in three through strikes from Ross Cook and Shane Lock with the home side’s response coming deep in second half stoppage time. New Milton were also in the surrounds of Bristol coming away 4-2 winners over Western League Bitton with goals from Tyler Rudd and Tyrell Sampson adding to a double from Chris Long. Bemerton, the third member of the trio, gained a goalless draw at Ashton & Backwell, also in the Bristol area, before going through 5-4 on penalties. The most convincing winners on the day were Premier League leaders Brockenhurst who thumped Bodmin by six goals to nil with Silvano Obeng and Christie Ward both scoring twice and Mitch Speechley-Price and James Shorey also on the scoresheet. Not too many miles away Blackfield & Langley proved too strong for Combined Counties Wokingham & Emmbrook, going through to the next round by means of goals from Rafa Ramos, Sami Makhloufi, Dom Panesar-Dower and Ali Zintany. Hamworthy United were another to travel to the environs of Bristol where a Lee Francis goal earned them a one all draw with Cadbury Heath before winning the penalty shootout six five. There was a similar scoreline and outcome at Cams Alders where an attendance of 273 saw Fareham come from a goal down to beat Jersey Bulls in the penalty shootout after Calum Benfield had levelled the scores.

Bashley made the long trip to Dobwalls in Cornwall and will have enjoyed the journey home after River Smith (2) and Lewis Aimson gave them a 3-0 victory and the last of the successful nine were Shaftesbury, who also won 3-0 on their visit to Longlevens in Gloucester with Asa Phillips, Aidan Shepherd and Luke Delaney the marksmen. On the down side so to speak, Alresford found the Kent air far from their liking, going down 6-0 at Chatham Town while Moneyfields went out by the odd goal in five at Littlehampton Town, Steve Hutchings and James Franklyn their scorers. Laverstock & Ford and Bournemouth both made long trips to Cornwall, but to no avail with both going down by four goals to two. Laverstock at Liskeard Athletic despite goals from Jake Rawkins and Archie Lovegrove and the Poppies at Wendron United where Conor Jevon and Lewis Harvey were on the mark for the Wessex League side. Lastly Downton went out 4-0 away from home at Royal Wootton Bassett and Ash United succumbed 3-2 at North Greenford with their consolation goals coming from Zak Ashley Simpson and Jay Ochiltree. In Division One Newport maintained their position with a best of five goals win at Fawley – strikes from Steve Green and Dylan Knight not enough against goals from Joe Craig, Jacob Reynolds and Joe Butcher – while at the Portway Josh Bertie added two more goals to his season’s tally as Andover Town defeated Ringwood two one. Harry Smith with the visitors’ goal in front of an attendance around the 150 mark. A goal glut at Test Park where Millbrook scored four but had to give best to five in reply from Follands. Mark Barker (2), Perry Harding and Greg King with the four and Luke Bartlett, Ethan Anders, Nathan Gray, Matt Casey and James Johnson with the five. Verwood continued their good form, goals from Harry Osman and Ollie Davis giving then a 2-0 success at Petersfield and a similar scoreline at Romsey with Whitchurch winning through goals from Ryan Long and Nick Yeomans. Lastly a convincing 5-1 win for Totton & Eling over Infinity with Alex Sawyer the top marksman of the day, his four goals adding to one from Ben Roles against a lone strike from Andy Powell.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN It still feels like something of a novelty at the moment, but the 202122 season has been quite enjoyable so far. It has been great to be back inside stadiums and experiencing a proper matchday atmosphere. But there is something of a darkening cloud on the horizon as we move out of autumn – government suits are on TV talking of a coming crisis concerning infection rates, deaths and precautionary measures. It’s time to rinse out those face masks and exercise some caution. Covid-19 aside, we have been reminded that the football crowd has never been the land of milk and honey. The recent scenes in Budapest and Wembley were a throwback to the days when going to the match was laden with hurdles around personal safety. Despite the gesturing, PR campaigns and signalling, football remains a heady mix of tribal bonhomie, good-natured jousting, bad behaviour, foul language and, unfortunately, racism and bigotry. Of course, we should not forget the Euro 2020 final, when we witnessed atrocious antics from fans making central London a playground for the drunk and disorderly. We should not pretend football life before covid-19 was perfect, but games were generally well policed, stewarded and administered. Britain made enormous progress in the late 1990s and into the 2000s around staging football and trouble was at a relatively low level. This environment dovetailed with the gentrification of the game, which certainly took a step

backwards at Wembley in July 2021. It would be a great shame if all the good work of the past starts to unravel. The pandemic has changed many things in our everyday lives and we are far from out of the woods. For all the rainbow drawings, clapping and good work done by volunteers, there are folk who seem to have adopted a “survival of the fittest” approach when it comes to food and fuel shortages. There’s also blatant disregard for precautionary measures among some groups, hence facemasks are almost totally to absent from crowds and public gatherings and joyous celebrations are ignoring the concept of keeping safe. When it comes to the crunch, people will crawl over each other to gain an advantage… or some unleaded petrol! Football stadiums are certainly more comfortable than they were in the past, but do we now have some psychological discomfort about being in a 30,000 crowd even though the chances of infection are lowered by being in the open air? Some of the animal spirits of the football crowd may need to be tempered as we move forward – cold weather is approaching and infection rates are rising once more. Britain will not easily deal with yet another lockdown, economically, mentally or physically. If recent news is leading us towards a lockdown or lockdown-lite, lite, football can play its part to ensure it keeps running. Instead of waiting ing for the government to shut it down, come up with an alternative that allows clubs to keep running, albeit at a reduced rate. Otherwise, it could be back to square one.
