JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another important match against New Milton Town in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Linnets including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of New Milton that have made the journey to Foxcotte Park this afternoon and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on this evening. Our last home game saw us take on the then league leaders Bemerton Heath and I thought we set a terrific pace right from the first whistle, both teams left nothing in the dressing room and showed why we are both near the top of the league. The only thing missing from the game was a goal and we so nearly got that through Liam Hibberd’s first half volley and also late in the second half with Joe Wright hitting the post and then Reece Rusher’s shot being superbly saved by Paddy Creese. Our own keeper Jordi also produced a couple of important saves and your support also helped, with your noise, when we kept pushing towards the end, so thank you for that. The entire side put in a good shift and helped us continue our fine form at home.

4

“BOTH TEAMS LEFT NOTHING IN THE DRESSING ROOM AND SHOWED WHY WE ARE BOTH NEAR THE TOP OF THE LEAGUE”

Was I happy with a point? I guess if you look at it, Bemerton the leaders at home, maybe – but personally I’m never happy with a point. I truly believe you should do everything to convert one point into three. As a display from my players, however, I was absolutely delighted. It was disappointing that the weather caused our game with Romsey to be postponed last Saturday. We were fully prepared for the game but the early inspection and the pictures from Romsey showed that the pitch wasn’t in a great state.

I know that the New Milton players will be really up for this game, they will be looking for revenge after we beat them at their place. They showed in midweek why they are a good side with their win over Ringwood, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park and to keep pushing for promotion. Enjoy the game!

Focus It is vital we focus on today’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us, as we look to continue to move up the table.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon and welcome to the players, staff and fans of New Milton Town, here today for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into a strong position for promotion with our hardfought victories over Totton & Eling and Verwood Town and an impressive battling display in the draw with Bemerton over the last few weeks.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Today’s match is, of course, a difficult one. New Milton will be looking to keep progressing up the table from

6

nineth. They arrive here on the back of an impressive 6-0 win on Tuesday evening. We will of course need to be at our very best today if we can maintain our winning form. With continued activity on and off the pitch at the moment putting the club in the local spotlight we have been inundated with companies interested in becoming sponsors, guests and partners of this fine football club. The current success of not only the first team but the Swifts and ladies’ sides is not only down to the players on the pitch but the financial support off it. If you’re interested in any sponsorship or would like to discuss any corporate partnerships with the Football Club please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Speaking of success, I’d like to congratulate our ladies’ side for progressing to the semi-finals of the Women’s Hampshire Trophy with a 4-1 penalty shoot-out success over US Portsmouth, after the tie finished 1-1 after the 90 minutes. Well done ladies! They face Eastleigh tomorrow afternoon in the semi-final here at Foxcotte Park, with a 2pm kick-off. So come on down and support the ladies.

We have come through a run of tough games, but we still have further difficult games ahead. Starting with today’s game and with the likes of Romsey, Newport (IOW) and Downton all to come in March. It makes for an exciting end to the season. We have finally moved up from 5th position into the top 4 and have a real opportunity to go up this season with a strong squad, that in my opinion, could finish in the top half of the Wessex Premier.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another huge game as we take on New Milton Town in another important game as we continue our pursuit of promotion to the Wessex Premier.

“BOTH SIDES LEFT NOTHING IN THE DRESSING ROOM, BUT I FELT WITH THE CHANCES WE HAD – WE DESERVED THE WIN.”

Today’s game comes after our goalless draw with Bemerton Heath a couple of weeks ago. To come away from the game being frustrated against the league leaders, says a lot about how well we played. Both sides left nothing in the dressing room, but I felt with the chances we had, especially hitting the post and then Reece’s effort seemed destined for the top corner before Paddy Creese pulled off a great save, we deserved the win. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week.

We are now into the business end of the season with our final eight games of the season. We are taking each game as it comes and know that we have a lot of tough games, starting with this afternoon with New Milton Town.

The Linnets come into today’s game on the back of an emphatic win over Ringwood Town on Tuesday night and will be high on confidence, but we won’t be taking things lightly. All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on and keep the pressure on the other sides around us. I don’t need to tell you to get behind us today really. We know you will, and we’ll do all we can to get another win for you in return. Enjoy the game.

There aren’t many sides in our division who can miss four players and keep themselves unbeaten, and it says a lot about the strength of squad here.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD IN A FEW WEEKS TIME WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO FACE ROMSEY TOWN AT THE AEC PROTECTION STADIUM IN THE RE-ARRANGED MIDWEEK FIXTURE

ROMSEY TOWN WHO? Romsey Town, aka the Town, from the AEC Protection Ground, are the Street’s opponents on the 12th of March. Totton lost 51 on Tuesday night against Winchester City in the Southampton Senior Cup, while the Town currently sit 8th place in the league with 50 points and are three points behind 7th place Downton. HOW THEY DOING? The Town got off to a poor start to the season, with three defeats against Newport (IOW), Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Folland Sports before a winning run of 4 matches for the Town, which started with a 3-2 home win over Fawley. Further wins over Totton & Eling, Laverstock & Ford and Ringwood Town followed before a 3-1 defeat at Verwood ended September. October saw Town start with a 1-0 win over Whitchurch, before a 51 defeat over Andover Town. They bounced back with a 5-1 win over Ash United and then a 3-1 win over East Cowes. The month ended with Whitchurch gaining revenge for their defeat earlier in the month with a 2-0 victory. November started with 2 wins over Petersfield and New Milton Town. A run of 2 defeats came mid-month against the Street (4-2) and Downton (3-1). The Town ended November with a 3-0 home victory over Fleet Spurs. December only saw 3 matches played but the Town remained unbeaten with wins over Millbrook (6-1) and Ringwood Town (10) and an impressive 1-1 home draw with leaders Bemerton Heath. 2022 started off well

10

for the Town with three wins over Fleet Spurs, Verwood Town and Ash United. A 2-2 home draw with Newport (IOW) ended the month of January. This month has seen a 2-0 defeat to Folland Sports before a 3-1 win at East Cowes, Oliver Jenkins getting a brace and also Owen Holloway also on target. The Town’s last league match ended in a 3-2 home defeat to Laverstock.

HOW TO GET THERE? The AEC Protection

Stadium is 39 minutes or 21 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A3057 towards Stockbridge. Continue along the A3057 through Stockbridge and Kings Somborne and all the way to Romsey. At the turn left onto The Hundred/B3398. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Bypass Rd/A27/A3090. The ground is on the left.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

our last match at the AEC Protection Stadium came in August 2017 in the Wessex League One and saw the Street lose 4-2 thanks to goals from Tom Ashton, Luis Morais and a brace from Daniel Fox. This came after Zach Hine gave the Street the lead after 34 minutes and Zach Neve got a consolation in the 70th minute. Since that defeat the Street won the return game in December 2017 with a 3-2 score line. The two sides then met in the FA Cup the following season, the Street triumphing 4-0. The two sides then met in the league in November 2019 with Street winning 5-1 but the season ended early before the return game could be played. Romsey then recorded a 2-0 win here in November 2020.

bluffers guide New Milton Town FC... THE CLUB The club was established in 1998 under the name Lymington & New Milton as a merger of AFC Lymington from the Wessex League and New Milton Town from Division Two of the Hampshire League, with the new club playing at New Milton Town's Fawcetts Field ground. The amalgamation of the two clubs also led to the formation of Lymington Town, who entered Division Three of the Hampshire League, and a new New Milton club based in Milford-on-Sea, who joined Division Two for a single season before folding. In their first season, Lymington & New Milton retained the Wessex League title won by AFC Lymington in 1997–98. However, they were unable to take promotion as their ground failed to meet the requirements. They were runners-up in the league in each of the next two seasons, making another failed application for promotion in 1999–2000. In 2003–04 Lymington & New Milton were Wessex League champions, earning promotion to Division One of the Isthmian League. However, after a single season in the Isthmian League, they were transferred to Division One South & West of the Southern League. Despite finishing above the relegation zone in 2006–07, the club resigned from the league at the end of the season after most of the club's officials resigned. Dropping back into the Premier Division of the Wessex League, the club were renamed New Milton Town. In 2012–13 they finished bottom of the Premier Division and were relegated to Division One after rescinding their resignation from the league when a proposed merger with Bashley fell through.

NEW MILTON – THE AREA In March 1888 New Milton railway station was opened, which is still in operation today. A new town developed, which expanded rapidly with the coming of the railway and the name New Milton was used for the first time and can originally be traced back to the Post Office that stood opposite the railway station. There is a mix of housing from cottages on the outskirts to more modern, urban housing in the central area. Milton village subsequently became known as Old Milton and lies between New Milton and Barton on Sea. There are few notable architectural points of interest in the local area. However, a distinctive row of Coast Guard Cottages is to be found in Barton Lane, Barton on Sea; these were built at the end of the nineteenth century by the Government of the day to house armed guards to try to stop the smuggling that was rife at the time. FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM NEW MILTON Neil Moss, former Southampton and AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper was born in the town. Rumer, singer lived and performed her first gig in the town. Ian Wooldridge, the sportswriter, was born in New Milton.

STREET 7-1 VERWOOD TOWN LAWTON 1, LOCK 10, 12, 15, 43, GOSNEY 21, FLOOD 73

EVANS 39

WHAT’S THE STORY? Andover New Street entertained in a five-star performance as they scored seven for the third time in five matches. The game then got away to an explosive start with the home side taking the lead after just thirty-four seconds. Mike Gosney charged down a clearance, his cross was only cleared to the edge of the area and Harry Lawton’s low drive found the corner of the net. Verwood had a much changed and youthful side from their previous visit and were simply swept aside in the opening twenty minutes. Mikey Davis was denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Adam Lewingray before the second goal came on ten minutes. Joe Wright went from left back to take a corner on the right and Shane Lock, far from the tallest player in the box, rose unchallenged to head the ball almost out of the keeper’s hands and high into the net. Two minutes later it was three as Chris Flood’s persistence took him down the left flank and the low cross was turned home by Shane Lock. Six minutes after he had scored his first goal he completed his hat trick, collecting a through ball and turning the defender before firing past the rather static keeper, The half’s midway point was marked by goal number five as the visiting defence failed to deal with a through ball and Mike Gosney found the corner of the net with the keeper again seeming flat footed. Another home corner was cleared and this time to good effect as Erhan Quarchioni’s speed took him into space on the right and his cross provided Diop Evans with a simple tap in to reduce the arrears. There was still time for New Street to make it six before the break as Flood’s clever reverse pass sent Shane Lock away, the defence stood off and a cool finish took the striker’s tally to four. The Street got a sixth goal when a Gosney corner from the right cleared everybody, only for Wright to cross from the other flank enabling Chris Flood to control the ball and turn in one movement before beating the overworked Lewingray.

STREET 0-0 BEMERTON HEATH H

WHAT’S THE STORY? First against third as the “Business End” of the season begins to take shape, two committed sides, an attendance well in excess of two hundred and an enjoyable if at times scrappy ninety minutes, though the wind played a large part in that, and in the end all square and a point apiece. The first attempt on goal fell for Andover New Street with a free kick from Reece Rusher, after he had been fouled on the corner of the area, being well saved by keeper Paddy Creese under heavy pressure.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

At the other end Ronan Clancy seemed to get the ball under his feet when well-placed and the chance was lost before Creese came for a corner he appeared to have little chance of reaching and Shane Lock’s snapshot from the loose ball was acrobatically blocked by a defender. Harry Beckley, whose pace was a threat to the home defence all afternoon, found space on the right but fired into the side netting and with the game switching from end-to-end Chris Flood was inches wide of the far post and saw another effort well saved by Creese after Joe Wright and Lock had created the opening. The half ended with another excellent save from Creese, tipping a thunderbolt from Liam Hibberd over the bar after a corner had only been partially cleared. The second half saw Some brave keeping by Jordi Wilson in the home goal averted danger from an in-swinging corner and after Ross Cook saw a close range shot rather fumbled round the post by Creese and with time running out, Wilson saved twice from Beckley in close succession and a Plummer cross evaded all in the area while at the other end Cook’s first time shot from a Lock cross was nearly inadvertently deflected past Creese by Flood. With time running out Street came closest to breaking the deadlock when Joe Wright clipped the far post and a Rusher effort was held by Creese and five nervous, for both sides, extra minutes could not alter the score line.

4 THE BOSS 21st October 2017 Andover New Street 2-0 New Milton Town Danny Dolan looks ahead to today’s game

The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by heavy defeats at Romsey and Christchurch. By the end of September, the Street were just 1 point off top spot and were in 5th place. East Cowes were defeated 6-2 before the Linnets inflicted a narrow 1-0 defeat on the Street. A 4-0 home defeat to Ringwood Town, with River Smith scoring all four dented the Street’s promotion aspirations before New Milton would be the next visitors to Foxcotte Park.

fire home from close range to give the Street the lead.

The lead was doubled in the 85th minute when Shane Lock produced a fine individual strike to find the bottom corner. Street Keeper Dave Tasker was then called into action with a fine point blank save to preserve the 2-0 score line. Then in the final minutes, Keogh and Flynn caused a flash point with both men wrestling each other to the ground and with various players getting involved, the referee decided to send off Street’s Dean Smith and Linnets Michael Barber.

In a tight first half of few chances, the Linnets missed an opportunity on 15 minutes when Flynn fired high and wide and the closest the Street came to scoring was a free-kick that cannoned around the New Milton 6-yard-box before falling into the keeper’s gloves.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS 'This is the great prize' - Hammers now just ONE win away from FA Vase final at Wembley

Hamworthy United boss Tim Sills is now allowing talk of his team’s Wembley dream becoming a reality, as they moved just one game away from the FA Vase final. In front of a bumper crowd of 741 at the County Ground on Saturday, Sills admitted he thought his side’s chances of progression to the semi-finals of the competition may have gone, after quarter-final opponents Southall netted the opener with five minutes remaining.

ALSO... Moneyfields end Dover Road life with ‘very comfortable’ Wessex League victory over struggling Amesbury

But Max Wilcock came up with a dramatic last-gasp equaliser to make it 11, after Steve Devlin’s corner was flicked on. And former Dorchester Town keeper Shane Murphy pulled off a pivotal save in the resulting penalty shootout – meaning the Dorset club progressed 7-6 on spot-kicks. And Sills, who featured three times at Wembley as a player, is now dreaming of a monumental occasion at the iconic venue once again. He told BBC Radio Solent: “It is a fantastic achievement. We broke the club record getting into the last 16 – we’re now into the last four and it’s up to us now to go and make even more history and get to the arch. People say, ‘do you talk about Wembley?’ Yes, I do now because, now this is the great prize. We are as close as we can be – why not go and do it?” Apart from a place in the semi-finals, Hamworthy also received £4,125 in prize money for the triumph. Littlehampton, who vanquished Hamworthy’s Wessex Premier League rivals Brockenhurst in an earlier round, are also in the hat, whilst Loughborough University and Newport Pagnell make up the semi-finalists. Speaking about their seventh win in the Vase this season, Sills added: “In terms of the actual game I thought they probably shaded it as the better side if I’m honest. They had the better chances. When they went 1-0 up, I looked around at our players and genuinely thought that we were probably done. “Pulling it back to go to penalties – everyone hates penalties really, but I would have taken penalties all day long at that point. “You just can’t describe what it means to the club going forward. The last four and it is back from the brink.”

36

Joe Briggs had the honour of becoming the last Moneyfields player to score for the club on the grass pitch at Dover Road. He grabbed the second in a routine 3-0 victory over Wessex League Premier Division strugglers Amesbury - the final goal deflected in off a visiting player. It was the final game at the ground before its multi-millionpound transformation into the John Jenkins Stadium complete with two artificial pitches and a host of other facilities. ‘It was very comfortable,’ said Money’s boss Glenn Turnbull. ‘They had an effort early on due to a mix up but after that I don’t think they created anything. ‘If it had been double the score line I don’t think anyone could have complained. ‘It was nice to keep a clean sheet - it’s unbelievable, that’s two in a week!’

ROUND-UP Hammers land away tie in semi-finals of the FA Vase

Hamworthy will face a trip to Newport Pagnell Town in the semi-final of the Buildbase FA Vase, after the draw was made live on TalkSport 2, this afternoon. Tim Sill's side - who earned their spot in the last four with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory over Southall on Saturday - will travel to the United Counties League Premier Division South side on Saturday, April 2. The other semi-final sees Littlehampton Town of the Southern Combination Premier host United Counties League Premier Division North outfit, Loughborough Students. A place at Wembley Stadium is the huge incentive for all the sides, with ties to be decided on the day. www.ansfc.co.uk

Fortune not with Fareham Town as they suffer third defeat to Alresford this season Pete Stiles was left scratching his head following Fareham Town's 2-1 Wessex League Premier Division defeat to Alresford at Cams Alders. The Reds boss stressed his men should have taken six points from their previous two encounters - games against Alresford and Hamble on their own patch - but instead were beaten in both matches. Against Alresford, Archie Willcox had clawed his side level after the visitors' early opener, but Kristian Andonov was on hand to complete his double to secure all three points for the travellers with his second-half effort. Stiles said: ‘How we didn't win that game I'll never know. We've camped in their half second half - they even admitted they got away with it. ‘It's two games (Alresford and Hamble) that we should have easily, easily won. It just won't go in. It's unbelievable. When I look back at the past four games, we've taken one point, we should have had nine! ‘We drew against Moneyfields, we should have beaten them, Shaftesbury, fair enough, our first-half undone us and we deserved to be beaten. But the two this week, we should have had six points. How we didn't have six points I don't know. ‘When you get clapped off by your fans when you've been beaten, you know you're not playing that bad.’

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 WINGERS OF ALL TIME.... 10 RYAN GIGGS WALES

Giggs is the most decorated footballer in England after winning 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three Football League Cups, nine FA Community shields, two UEFA Champions Leagues, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. Pretty impressive trophy cabinet for the Welsh winger. Giggs is also the all-time appearance record holder for the club with 897.

8

ROBERT PIRES

FRANCE

Robert Pires was in his prime when he linked up with Thierry Henry at Arsenal in 2000. Nicknamed D'artagnan after once sporting some chin hair similar to the infamous musketeer, Pires was influential in Arsenal's success in winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two FA Community Shields. Pires also won one Coupe de la Ligue, one UEFA European Championship, two FIFA Confederations Cup and one FIFA World Cup.

7 JOHAN CRUYFF NETHERLANDS

9

TOM FINNEY

NETHERLANDS

Tom Finney only played for one club for the whole of his career, and that beneficiary was Preston North End. Former Liverpool legendary manager Bill Shankly once said about Finney, "Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age...even if he had been wearing an overcoat." Despite his fantastic talent, Finney never won a thing.

On top of being one of the best wingers, Cruyff is one of the best players that has ever lived. You could argue Cruyff was a striker by trade, but such was the system of total football employed by his former club Ajax back in the 60s and 70s. He often switched to the wing to confuse opponents and was equally as devastating there. The man has his own move named after him—what more can be said? Cruyff won eight Eredivisie titles, five KNVB Cups. three European Cups, one Intercontinental Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, one UEFA Intertoto Cup, one La Liga title and one Copa Del Rey.

6

RONALDINHO

BRAZIL

Whilst Roberto Rivelino invented the "flip flap", Ronaldinho certainly perfected it. In his heyday at Barcelona, Ronaldinho was one of the most feared players on the planet. His skills whilst running at full speed were unbelievable and no one knew what he was going to do next. Ronaldinho eventually lost some of his explosive speed, but he still played for a top European club in AC Milan before moving to Flamengo.

38

5

MARC OVERMARS

NETHERLANDS

Overmars is perhaps most famous for his spells at Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona, where he won plenty of silverware, including three Eredivisie titles, one KNVB Cup, two Johan Cruyff shields, one UEFA Champions League, one European Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup, one Premier League, one FA Cup and one FA Charity shield.

3

DAVID GINOLA

FRANCE

Suave French midfielder David Ginola was one of the most exciting wingers ever seen in the English Premier League. Blessed with fantastic balance and a great flair for the game, Ginola was a fan favourite—although he was not always popular with his manager due to his tendency not to bother playing defence. Ginola could create something from nothing and the video above shows one of his finest goals in the 1999 FA Cup.

2 4

JOHN BARNES

ENGLAND

ANDREI KANCHELSKIS

RUSSIA

John Barnes was born in Kingston, Jamaica, but was capped 79 times for England.

Andrei Kanchelskis played for a number of clubs throughout his career, but he was perhaps better known for his time at Manchester United.

Barnes rose to fame for his graceful performances on the wing for Liverpool FC in the 1980s, but he was always tainted with critics who said he never performed as well for his country as he did for the Merseyside Reds.

Blessed with a sparkling pace, Kanchelskis ultimately fell foul of manager Alex Ferguson and was sold to neighbouring club Everton.

Barnes won two League Championships, two Charity Shields, two FA Cups and one League Cup in his distinguished career.

1 DAVID BECKHAM ENGLAND

In comparison to Marc Overmars, David Beckham is a completely different type of winger. Beckham was blessed with possibly the most accurate right foot in the world, and his crosses and free kicks are absolutely deadly. Beckham's game was never about pace which gave him the longevity to play until he was 37 – a 20-year career, during which he won 19 major trophies.. Beckham was won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four FA Community Shields, one FA Youth Cup, one UEFA Champions League, one Intercontinental Cup, one La Liga title, one Supercopa de Espana, two MLS Supporters Shields and one MLS Cup.

BY CHRIS NEE -

THE IMPENETRABLE LIONS OF ROME

Some football moments zip by in a flash and others seem to make time stand still. When Glenn Hoddle's England played Italy in Rome in their final FIFA World Cup 1998 qualifier they provided both in quick succession right at the bitter end. Needing only a draw to qualify, David Seaman got England moving after gathering Christian Vieri's attempted bicycle kick and his Arsenal team-mate Ian Wright skipped past Italian goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi to bear down on an empty net. It was too acute an angle for Wright and his shot struck the post despite a nation willing it into the net. Teddy Sheringham couldn't find a finish in the aftermath and Italy played a long pass of their own. Alessandro del Piero clipped in a precise cross for Vieri, who may as well have not moved from the spot from which his original effort had taken place. With time running out it all came down to Vieri against Seaman. The Italian met the cross full and true as we watched, almost able to track the spin of the ball in agonising slow-motion as it arced towards the corner of Seaman's net. We waited, and waited, and waited. But the bulge in the net never came. Vieri had headed wide; England were through. Hoddle first took to his desk at Lancaster Gate with England on the crest of a wave after UEFA Euro '96, and throughout qualifying for France '98 Wembley was the place to be. It was a vibrant and exciting venue, packed with enthusiastic and noisy school groups and hardened England fans alike, all watching one of England's best ever overlooked teams. And it was the dual with Italy that really etched the 1997 England team into the history books.

42

After Gianfranco Zola's goal had beaten them at Wembley, Ian Wright and Paul Scholes scored the first two goals conceded by Italy under Cesare Maldini at Le Tournoi. By kick-off time in Rome in October it was hoped that England wouldn't require another. The remaining results left Hoddle's team in the driving seat but there was still plenty of room for traditional English pessimism, for the job was not quite finished. Italy had kept Alan Shearer at bay at Wembley and had frightening firepower of their own.

Italy's line-up on October 11th 1997 was fearsome and England needed to thwart them in order to guarantee their place in the World Cup the following summer. Without the injured Shearer, Hoddle played Wright up front with Sheringham. David Beckham and Paul Gascoigne were anchored in midfield by Paul Ince and David Batty, both of whom were pivotal in Hoddle's game plan. In the build-up, the former Chelsea boss (helped with translation on this trip by future England manager Roy Hodgson) had talked to his players about deploying an Italian game against the Italians, aiming to frustrate the post-Catenaccio Azzurri with a strategy based primarily on maintaining possession and limiting the opposition's chances. England's performance was disciplined and Hoddle's approach was executed almost to perfection. The first half was as composed a 45minute spell as one could hope to see from England. Italy's opportunities were kept to an absolute minimum, with Batty and Ince -- who famously finished the match in a head bandage -- wonderfully marshalling Italy's midfield playmakers while Gareth Southgate, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell and Graeme Le Saux happily tidied up any loose ends behind them.

Seaman had little to do. In fact, it was Peruzzi who had to be on his guard when Beckham's diagonal pass to the edge of the area allowed Sheringham to tower above Angelo Di Livio and set up Ince, who arrived at the perfect moment but could only direct his volley straight at the Juventus goalkeeper. Beckham himself soon came close to opening the scoring, sweeping the ball over from 18 yards after playing a delightful, lengthened one-two with Sheringham.

The second half was a scruffier affair, but England kept their heads. Hearts were in English mouths with 17 minutes left on the clock when substitute Del Piero, replacing Zola in his last Italy match, appeared to be upended by Adams just inside Seaman's penalty area. Referee Mario van der Ende was prompted into action not to point to the penalty spot, but to caution the legendary Juventus forward for diving. It was a marginal decision and England had escaped a nervous moment that could easily have gone the other way. Del Piero was in the thick of the action again three minutes later. Producing his trademark trickery on the left wing, he foxed Campbell more than once before the England defender was able to stand his ground while the Italian over-elaborated and surrendered possession. Campbell didn't have the ball for long, however. As he scoped out his options, Di Livio came flying in to plant a vicious and unnecessary lunge on the Spurs man. Van der Ende didn't hesitate, showing the yellow card to Di Livio for the second time and reducing the home side to ten men. They continued to press regardless. England remained equal to the challenge. The match careered towards its dramatic conclusion, which began and ended at England's goalline but left it mercifully unbreeched. England were through and the Lions of Rome returned home as heroes.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

It's difficult for a goalless draw to echo down the ages but this one came close thanks to England's unravelling in the decade that followed. David Baddiel and Frank Skinner reprised 'Three Lions' with the Lightning Seeds, Rome its renewed focal point.

And as Hoddle, his staff and his substitutes poured off the bench onto the field to join the players' celebrations, there was a real sense that this was England's moment. They'd limited Italy on their own pitch in spite of enormous pressure and world class opposition, and there was no suggestion whatsoever that they hadn't deserved it. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It can turn World Cup Italia '90 heartbreak into an historical zenith, a sacred memory one can only dream of matching. And for all the talk of a supposed Golden Generation of English players who began to make their mark after France '98, the team that secured England's qualification in superb style was a far more capable, much more effective outfit.

CELEBRATING NON-LEAGUE DAY!

By Jon Couch

When James Doe created Non-League Day in 2010, not even he could have imagined the beast he had unmasked. What started off as a suggestion to help acknowledge the plight of Non-League football in the community has now become one of the biggest occasions in the Non-League calendar, celebrating all aspects of the game outside of the Premier League and EFL. Year-on-year, the turnstiles continued to click, and Non-League Day got bigger and bigger until Covid brought the concept to an abrupt halt in 2020 and 2021. Now, however, it’s back for the first time in three years and Doe believes this year’s event has the potential to be the best yet. “I think it has the potential to be the biggest one yet,” Doe said of the event, which takes place on Saturday March 26 this year. “We’ve had a couple of years off and the world of football has changed quite a bit. “I think there’s still a bit of reaction to the whole European Super League filtering down, I think a lot of people discovered Non-League during the pandemic because they were locked out of their big clubs. As we’ve seen, there are big crowds at lots of games this season that you wouldn’t necessarily normally get. “It feels extra special this year because of the gap. We’ve had a couple of false dawns where we thought we would go with it and then things flared up and new variants appeared. Doe, a QPR fan, came up with the idea when watching his local side Harrow Borough. And its legacy has already contributed to huge rises in attendances up and down the country which was strangely enhanced by Covid and the government restrictions which went with it. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

In the past, clubs have embraced Non-League Day with quirky events and traditions to get supporters through the gates. Bungay Town handed out mushrooms on the door and even paid each supporter 5p one year in order to hit the headlines. At Great Yarmouth Town, you got a free fish sandwich and Grantham Town dished out gingerbread men, courtesy of the chairman. Once again this year, Prostate Cancer UK are supporting the event – as they have done since 2014. They are urging fans to be aware of their risk of the most common cancer in men by taking a 30-second test on their website, while Doe is promoting awareness by pulling on a PCUK jersey for his annual Non-League Day ground hop. A match map, detailing which games are on, is now live on the Non-League Day website, and Premier League clubs have also got involved, promoting local games in their jurisdiction. “It’s always been a celebration, it’s not a protest,” Doe said. “We’re trying to being every element of the football community together. That’s the idea and I think it largely has done. “It will be good to get as many people involved as possible and be as positive as we can. It’s supposed to be a bit of fun. “I’ve been chatting to the guys at Harrow recently and they’ve got someone who has become an outreach officer. They did their first big promotion against Taunton where they invited loads of school kids and they pretty much all turned up. It doubled the crowd, from an incredibly diverse background with people who would have never stepped foot in a football ground before that and it could be really transformative. “We’d love as many clubs as possible to get involved.” @AndoverNSfc

league look It must have been a nerve-racking afternoon at the County Ground for the 743 spectators plus the players and officials of Hamworthy United and Southall with the Buildbase FA Vase Quarter Final going to penalties in which the Wessex League side triumphed 7-6 and moved in to the last four.

In a way it was apt, and probably rather expected by many, that it was decided in such a manner as both sides had progressed more than once by the same route to reach todays stage. Max Wilcock scored the all-important goal in the dying moments of normal time for the Hammers who go into Monday’s draw with Loughborough University, Newport Pagnell Town and Littlehampton Town, meaning that the possibility of a long trip to Wythenshawe in Manchester or North Shields has been avoided. Despite missing out on a League match today, Hamworthy remain at the head of the Premier Division with Shaftesbury and Bashley now in the top three. Shaftesbury won the “big match” at Five Heads Park by the odd goal in five, thereby relegating Horndean to fourth place. Luke Burbidge, Billy Maybury and Asa Phillips scored the vital goals for the visitors with the home reply coming from Connor Duffin and Harry Jackson. It will be no doubt little consolation to the losers that they became the second side to top one hundred goals in the League this season. Bashley defeated US Portsmouth 2-0 at Bashley Road with the goals coming in the first half from Jamie Webber and Dan Thompson and Brockenhurst remain very much in contention after a lone Kieran O’Donnell strike earned them all three points at Baffins Milton Rovers. Bournemouth and AFC Stoneham shared eight goals and the points at Victoria Park – a good result for the Poppies – with a hat trick for both sides. Sami Garcia and Callum Laycock were the three goal marksmen with Jonny Efedje (Bournemouth) and Jim Orvis (Stoneham) also on the score sheet. It was honours even at AFC Portchester as well with Felipe Barcelos on target for the home side and Kelvin Robinson, who has been in the goals of late, ensuring Hamble Club a point. Moneyfields defeated bottom Club Amesbury 3-0 at Dover Road courtesy of goals from Dec Seiden and Joe Briggs coupled with an own goal, while Fareham’s poor run continued with a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Alresford Town – Archie Wilcox for the Creeksiders and a Kristian Andonov double for the visitors.

48

Cowes Sports and Blackfield & Langley finished with a goal apiece on the Island through Gareth Bricknell and Kai Mellor whilst there was a fourth win of the season for Hythe & Dibden; 2-1 at Portland United. Sam Boon scored both goals for the Waterside visitors with a late goal from Oli Lawes the home reply. Given the overnight weather it was fortunate that only three games were postponed overall and two involved sides in the Division One promotion chase – Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Andover New Street. Bemerton do not lose many games to the weather but their fixture with New Milton was a non-starter as was New Street’s trip to Romsey. So, they were forced to sit and watch as the other three members of the leading quintet all added three points to their tally. Follands were a goal behind to a Declan Shuttleworth header at Whitchurch but were then a goal ahead at the break and finished 4-1 winners with Nathan Gray, Fabio Manuel. Jake Long (penalty) and Ethan Anders claiming the goals. Newport made the long journey to Fleet Spurs and returned home with a 3-1 victory to their credit, Joe Craig, Joe Butcher and Jake Reynolds for the Port and Tom White adding another goal to his tally for Spurs. Andover Town were also on the road and achieved a best of three goals win at Ringwood with Ryan Hamm’s strike for the home side being more than cancelled out by Town’s Ryan Griffiths and Brendan Holmes. Joint highest scorers of the day were Downton as Ash United’s woes on their travels continued with a 5-0 defeat at Wick Lane. Sam Moss scored three of the five with Ollie Davies and Danny Clarke also on target. Verwood broke a run of poor results with a 3-0 home victory over East Cowes Vics – Jake Carswell with two and Billy Bradley claiming the goals. The final game was likely to have a bearing on the relegation struggle and finished with an emphatic 5-1 victory for Fawley over Totton & Eling on the Waterside that widens the points gap between themselves and Fleet Spurs and leaves their opponents rather becalmed at the bottom of the table. Alex Sawyer (2), James Clifton, Jamie Elkins and Tom Rafferty supplied the nap hand with Mitch Wood replying for the Millers. The third game that fell foul of the weather was a Southampton Senior Cup tie at Millbrook where Winchester City were to be the visitors. One other game outside the League with Petersfield putting up a spirited performance at Gosport in the semi-final of the Portsmouth Senior Cup before going down to the only goal of the game, scored by former Baffins striker Ryan Pennery. Gosport will now meet Moneyfields in the Final.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN

Football’s unsustainable finances continue to be affected by external affairs and suboptimal practices, the latest hurdle will doubtless emerge from the war in Ukraine, although the full economic impact of the conflict is still a long way from being known.

However, even before the pandemic and the behaviour of Vladimir Putin, football’s business model was being exposed on a daily basis and covid-19 merely provided the final straw for some clubs. According to Fair Game, the organisation promoting sustainability, integrity and community orientation, 44 of the 85 clubs that filed financial returns for 2019-20 were technically insolvent. These included Premier League clubs West Ham, Brighton, Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United. The most “technically insolvent” club in the Fair Game list is Stoke City with a negative figure of £154.4 million. At the opposite end of the table, the balance sheet equity figures of the big and powerful dwarf the majority of the 92 clubs. Manchester City, for example, had balance sheet equity of £ 631 million, while Chelsea (£511m), Arsenal (£345m), Tottenham (£340m) and Liverpool (£ 208m) were the only others with figures in excess of £ 100 million. Technical solvency is calculated by taking all the club’s assets (including stadium, training ground and players) and subtracting the liabilities (including debt). If liabilities outweigh assets, the club can be categorised as technically insolvent. Niall Couper, CEO of Fair Game, said in a press release: “These pre-pandemic figures should be a huge alarm bell to anyone interested in football. Most clubs only exist because of a wealthy benefactor. Which leads the obvious question: What happens if they walk away?” The football world will soon see what happens when one of the most generous benefactors, Roman Abramovich, leaves Chelsea, and how the new owners of the club eventually run the business. Here we have an example of a club that has enjoyed huge

54

levels of backing suddenly without the man who has funded unprecedented success. The Premier League clubs, generally, have a high degree of solvency which is boosted by TV revenues, amounting to almost £ 2.5 billion in 2020. Couper added: “The problem is that the vast majority of that sum stays in the Premier League and this has created a dangerous culture. Clubs are gambling their very own existence to chase the siren call of the Premier League, with Derby County the latest example.” The Championship, of which Derby have been members for 14 seasons, is renowned for overspending, primarily on players wages. For example, in 2019-20, the wage-toincome ratio in the division rose to 120%, up from 107%. TV revenue distribution needs to be examined closely, for only 1.2% of the total is distributed to clubs below the top two tiers, while 12% goes towards parachute payments for relegated clubs from the Premier. A fairer method would ensure the whole of League One and Two attain technical solvency. Couper says: “There is so much money in football, yet there is no holistic view on how to use it to benefit the game overall.” Fair Game is calling for an independent regulator, a key element of the recent government study on football, but also considers a sustainability index a priority built around four criteria: financial substainability, good governance, equality standards and community and fan engagement. Perhaps there is a need for a credit rating agency of a sort to monitor the financial health of clubs on a real time basis? Although the past two years have seen football struggle against a difficult backdrop, the fact so many clubs have announced financial distress should concern everyone. The geopolitics, the pandemic, the global economy and the UK’s departure from the European Union have all contributed to the current situation. And with the immediate horizon looking very depressing and uncertain, we can only assume more clubs will stare into the abyss at some stage. We have been warned.
