THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW

As is sadly too often the case a wet week and a wet November 5th, which no doubt not only put paid to a few Firework displays but also somewhat decimated the Wessex League programme with only seven matches completed – two in the Premier and five in Division One.

In the Premier the Portland Twitter page in midweek suggested they would have to keep a close eye on Brett Pitman when AFC Portchester came visiting on Saturday, but it was not close enough as the striker scored all three goals as a 3-2 victory took them back to the top of the table. Greg Borthwick and Ryan McKechnie scored the home goals in what was a creditable performance.

At the other end of the table Blackfield & Langley recorded their first win of the season last week, scoring four goals in the process, and followed that up and bettered it with a 6-0 defeat of Cowes Sports. Sam Woodward with a hat trick, two from Rich Bakary and a single for Charlie Rattley. In Division One Downton took over top spot after a single goal victory over Fleet Spurs – Shaun Prentice on target – and Andover New Street moved in to third place after defeating local rivals Whitchurch United 31 thanks to two goals from Shane Lock and one from Ross Cook with Craig Rutledge the visitors marksman.

Andover Town went down 3-0 at Verwood with Joe Smith notching two and Regan Mason scoring from inside his own half while a few miles down the road Petersfield won at Ringwood for the second time in almost as many weeks. Joe Hughes scored the home goal with the visitors three coming from Matt Dougan, Josh Rose and Mino Djaura and we understand all three scorers started the game on the bench. Inspired managerial substitutions perhaps.

Lastly a little fortune went Amesbury’s way as a lastminute goal gave them a share of the points at Ash United with the game finishing at three goals apiece. Darren Wheeler, Kareem Foster and Ryan Green for the home side and Alfie Budd, Taylor Budgell and Jake Terry for the men from Wiltshire.
