JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for this afternoon’s encounter against Petersfield Town in Wessex League 1. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to manager Mark Summerhill, his staff and players plus the committee and fans, who have made the journey to Andover today. Petersfield visit us on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Bashley last week but they are a team capable of beating anyone on their day and I know I say it most weeks, but we expecting nothing less than another tough game. We know that we will have to produce good form this afternoon if we’re to find a favourable result.

Happy I’d like to express how happy I am with the whole squad for their attitude, commitment and effort they apply to each game and the intensity that we play at. They are all listening to the instructions that myself, John and the back room staff are giving them and implementing it onto the pitch and reaping the rewards. The back four have been solid and reliable, with Lee Morris adapting to this level really well. He has come into the side and been solid. We have been really happy with his performances and he has cemented his place in the side.

4

“I’D I’D LIKE TO EXPRESS HOW HAPPY I AM WITH THE WHOLE SQUAD FOR THEIR ATTITUDE, COMMITMENT AND EFFORT THEY APPLY TO EACH GAME AND THE INTENSITY THAT WE PLAY AT.”

Also a special mention to Shane Lock, who has moved into a more central role in midfield and has really set the standard with his energetic performances and he is constantly shutting people down and dictating how we play and been fantastic in there and he captained the side really well recently in Scotty’s absence. After today we face a busy schedule, with a number of really tough fixtures in both league and cup but it’s something I’m confident the squad can cope with at what is going to be an important part of the season.

Energy and Expertise I have mentioned before the importance of your support at our matches and it was eveident again last Saturday and we’re going to need that support again this afternoon, and we’re going to need the energy and expertise of the players on the pitch. This season we have already shown what is possible when we are all together. Remember, the stronger the team, the stronger the team. Get behind us once more today and let’s hope for the three points. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

After another victory on our travels, I would like to wish all supporters a warm welcome back to our Foxcotte Park home this afternoon. My greetings are extended to our visitors Petersfield Town, their committee, management, players and supporters, who have made the 76mile round-trip across Hampshire today. The Rams arrive here looking to get their season going with only one win prior to date against struggling Fleet Spurs but they have put in reasonable performances against Wessex Premier Hamble Club in the League Cup and also against Laverstock & Ford, where they picked up a point and also in their last league game at home to Bemerton, where they kept the Quins at bay for the first 45 minutes but made Bemerton work hard for their 3-0 victory, so we need to be at our best again today if we want to obtain the three points.

6

Last Saturday’s performance was encouraging, we dominated for most of the game and the only downside was we had not taken some clear chances that were created and only had the one goal, which proved costly just before half-time when Amesbury scored with a rare attack. We started the second half brightly and deservedly went back in front and there was no stopping us from there. It has presented us with a local derby in the next round as we face Andover Town at the Portway next week. We have also received a bye in the North Hants Senior Cup and face Downton in a few weeks time in the third round of the league cup. Our Swifts side have made an equally impressive start to the season with a great 3-2 away win at South Wonston, followed up with a 9-1 victory here last Saturday against Chamberlayne in the Hampshire Premier Senior Cup. They travel to Silchester this afternoon and we hope they can continue their fine form and return back with another three points.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

We kept up our fine run with a fourth win on the bounce against Amesbury Town on Saturday, which was another result down to a lot of hard work.

“WE WILL BE MAKING SURE WE ARE IN THE PROMOTION MIX COME THE END OF THE SEASON.”

It was a good solid performance and won thanks to a great hat-trick from Lloyd Thompson and a cool penalty from Ross Cook. The lads were excellent and despite being pegged back before half-time, we continued to dominate the game in the second half to progress to the next round of the Vase where we face Andover Town, in a game I know all the lads are looking forward to after last month’s 2-2 draw.

Tough Matches Ahead Today’s match with Petersfield starts a run of tough matches ahead for us, with our Vase fixture next week, quickly followed with an away trip to Fawley, which is never a great place for us and then we have a League Cup tie at Downton. We need to continue to work hard and that’s something I hope is evident to everyone watching our matches. We have begun to start matches on the front foot and put the opposition under pressure from the first whistle.

mistakes but it is at those times in which we need your backing the most, so I urge you all to encourage us – especially our younger lads – as much as possible because honestly it does make a massive difference.

As I’ve mentioned in my previous notes, we are still in the early stages of a long hard season and we know that there is a long way to go But we will be making sure we are in the promotion mix come the end of the season. We are a very level-headed headed bunch and I know that there will be plenty of ups and downs before the season comes to an end. We have got ourselves into a great position through sheer endeavour and teamwork and we must not allow llow our standards to slip. I have mentioned before, the gaffers are going to have one big selection headache when everyone is available. Lastly I’d like to wish Lloyd Thompson the very best with his move to Dubai, hopefully he will be back at some point oint as he has been playing extremely well since he joined last year. Enjoy the game.

As we go into today’s game it’s important to remember we have a young group of players who need your support. Sometimes we will make

let's go THE STREET’S NEXT PORT OF CALL IS IN FA VASE ACTION NEXT SATURDAY WHEN WE MAKE THE SHORT TRIP TO FACE LOCAL RIVALS ANDOVER TOWN AT THE PORTWAY STADIUM

WHO? Andover Town FC, aka the Town. It’s a local derby next for the Street as we make the short trip across the town to the Portway Stadium, looking to reverse our last visit there last season. WHERE? The trip to the Portway Stadium is the shortest journey for Street fans – a mere 3 miles from Foxcotte Park. As for the stadium itself, the main stand holds around 300 and offers an elevated view from its bench seating. The views are pretty good thanks to no supporting pillars. In addition, there is an area of cover behind on goal for around 70 fans. The rest of the ground is open but is very well kept. The location isn't the best, in the middle of an industrial estate but at least there is plenty of parking. There isn’t much nearby, but at the ground, there is a decent tea bar. TICKETS? Its pay on the day with admission prices set at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. It promises to be a popular game with the recent league fixture attracting a massive 369 attendance, which is the division’s highest attendance so far this season and also the third highest in the Wessex Leagues combined. WHO ARE YA? Now in their 4th season back in the Wessex One after being relegated as punishment for failing to take promotion to the Division One West of the Southern League, when they finished runners-up in the Premier Division in 2017-18. The following season saw

10

major changes at the club with Ron Bertie in charge being assisted by Jason Holmes. The club finished 18th in the 2018-19 2018 season with 26 points. The following 2 season’s saw progression but was cut short due to the global pandemic. HAVE WE BEEN BEFORE? BEFORE Oh yes, the last encounter last month saw the Street make an impressive start but could not find the opening goal and then found themselves 2-0 2 down after 30 minutes in the game, with goals from Josh Bertie and Michael Owen giving the Town the advantage. With time running out in the second half, despite creating a few chances, young Cameron Thatcher burst through to reduce the arrears and then Town went down to 10 men when Primus received a straight red card. card With barely minutes left, Ross Cook equalised when his deflected strike from the edge of the box found the bottom corner. The last competitive game between the two sides at Foxcotte Park, with a below par Street performance perform fortunately winning 2-1 1 in October 2019. Callum Sweeney opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Zach Hine equalised before Jake Curtis headed in his first Street goal. PLAYED FOR BOTH? ? A large number of players have played for both clubs, including current rent Street players Shane Lock, Matt Scott, Gary Thorne and Gunner Yates have all played for the Town, while Owen Trapnell currently current plays for Town. Reece Rusher, Zac Neve, Neve Zach Hine, Dave Tasker, Alex Dockree, Danny Urry and Sam Mills have ave also represented represente both clubs.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

A very happy birthday to Street manager Jamie Coleman, who was celebrating his 35th birthday on Tuesday. We hope you had a great day JC with love from everyone at the club.

STREET AWAY FOR FURTHER CUP TIES IN OCTOBER Following last Saturday’s victory at Amesbury in the FA Vase, we are now drawn away to neighbours Andover Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round. The Town won away 3-1 at Wessex Premier Baffins Milton Rovers last Saturday with Josh Bertie getting a first half brace and Adam Pattison ensuring the victory against the Portsmouth side. The game will take place next Saturday (25th September) with a 3pm kick-off. Admission prices can be found on the previous page.

We’d also like to wish a belated happy birthday to goalkeeper coach Alex Thompson, who celebrated his birthday on Thursday. Happy birthday Thomo. Lots of love from everyone at Andover New Street.

HOOPER HEADS TO HORNDEAN The Street confirmed last week that Luke Hooper has left the club to join Wessex Premier Horndean after the Portsmouth based side put a 7 day approach in for the youngster. Hooper was the club’s top scorer with eight goals in 8 starts and had returned to the club in pre-season after the striker had joined Eastleigh Academy the previous season.

12

We also now know our opponents and also have a date lined up for the Wessex League Cup 3rd Round as we face another away fixture at Downton, who beat Bournemouth Poppies in a high scoring 5-4 victory on Tuesday night. We travel to face the Robins on Tuesday 5th of October with a 7.45pm kick off. Again admission prices can be found on page 11.

SHANE WINS PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Street midfielder, Shane Lock picked up the club’s Player of the Month award for August. Lock received the award prior to the game against East Cowes following outstanding recent performances against Shepton Mallet, Infinity, Andover Town, New Milton and Cowes Sports. It was a close contest but Lock came out top of the vote amongst the football committee at the club.

welcome PETERSFIELD TOWN

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Petersfield Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Ram’s make the journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time since their 1-0 victory last season, the Rams snatching the points late on thanks to a Scott Kinge own goal. Petersfield arrive at Foxcotte this afternoon looking to get their campaign started after a 3-0 home defeat to Bashley in the FA Vase last Saturday. Ram’s manager Mark Summerhill will be looking for a vast improvement from his side following two successive relegations from the Southern League Division 1 Central and then the Wessex Premier. Their first season back in Wessex League One saw a 15th place finish, while the 2019-20 & 2020-21 seasons were ended with the Rams in 10th and 12th positions respectively. The Ram’s didn’t get their current campaign off to the best of starts with 3-2 defeat away at Totton & Eling. They then lost 1-4 at home to current leaders Newport IOW.

14

Their only win so far this season came at home to league newcomers Fleet Spurs with a 22 0 victory thanks to goals from Kieran Alcock and Bailey Newbury. A 4-1 home defeat followed against New Milton Town and then a narrow defeat (2-1) 1) at Romsey Town. An impressive 2-2 2 draw at Laverstock & Ford with Jake Alford equalising in the first half and Marvin Orepo scoring in the second half. The Rams interest in the Wessex League Cup ended with a penalty shootout defeat at home to Premier side Hamble Club. Club The Rams certain gave Hamble a run for their money before losing 5-4 4 on penalties after a 2-2 2 draw in the 90 minutes. Their last league game was against Bemerton Heath Harlequins at home a couple of weeks ago and the Rams encouragingly got to half-time half at 0-0. 0. Bemerton eventually took the lead through Danny Young and with the Rams pushing forward for an equaliser, they were caught out ut with space at the back and this was exploited by Bemmie with Harry Beckley scoring past Scott Heelas. The third goal came a minute later from a set piece with substitute Joshua Moore able to convert on the stretch. The Rams will be aiming to stop the rot this afternoon and look to improve on a record at Foxcotte park that has seen them win 10 of their 12 meetings played at Foxcotte Park.

STREET 5-0 EAST COWES VICTORIA RUSHER 18, LOCK 25, 60, THOMPSON 45, LAWTON 75

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street completed their own happy version of Cowes week as they followed up their midweek League Cup win at Cowes Sports with a 5-0 defeat of East Cowes Vic’s. Without skipper Matt Scott and hat-trick hero Ross Cook, were quickly on the front foot and after several chances they took the lead on 18 minutes when Hooper chased down a long ball down the left and moved the ball across to Shane Lock and then onto Reece Rusher, who slotted home inside the far post Halfway through the first half the Street doubled their lead when Lock was put through from a Lloyd Thompson throw in and Lock produced a clinical finish past the advancing keeper. The Street then went 3-0 up just before halftime when Lloyd Thompson pounced on a rebound after the East Cowes keeper had blocked a Hooper effort. The second half started in the same vain as the first and Shane Lock made it 4-0 when he slid the ball home off the far post, after Robbie Owen had outstripped the defence. Hooper, would then earn a second yellow card and be sent off after tangling with the opposition keeper. Down to 10 men the Street made changes and substitute Harry Lawton scored with his first touch with a header from a corner to complete the rout. www.ansfc.co.uk

WHAT’S THE STORY? Lloyd Thompson scored the perfect hat-trick as the Street progressed to the next round of the FA Vase with a emphatic 4-1 victory at Wessex Premier side Amesbury Town. Street took an early lead in the 5th minute. The ball was initially crossed from the right and goalkeeper Ernest Osei twice frantically palmed the ball off the line without too much help from his defence before Lloyd Thompson headed home from close range. A Reece Rusher shot was too high and a slightly cynical challenge by Billy Lawrence on Ross Cook saw the visitors awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. Cook took the kick himself and the ball clipped the top of the bar with the keeper no more than a spectator.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Street were very much dominating possession and the game in general but received something of an awakening on the stroke of halftime when the home side levelled the scores. A free kick from the left looked reasonably innocuous but the defence failed to get the ball away and Josh Carey forced the ball over the line leaving New Street to head for the half time tea wondering why they were not comfortably ahead. SMITH 87 first half, Street scored after As in the five minutes in the second half with the home defence contributing to their own downfall, Thompson’s pace and control took him in to the area, the challenge was awkward and from behind and Ross Cook almost nonchalantly lifted the spot kick high in to the top corner. Street added goal number three on 65 minutes with Thompson collecting a through ball in the inside left channel and coolly beating the advancing keeper. The Amesbury keeper saved another Thompson effort. But the winger was not to be denied a hat-trick and with stoppage time rapidly approaching, he robbed Jack Pitt and beat the keeper at his near post to complete his hat trick and an emphatic win for his side. The Street advanced to the next round and now faces local rivals Andover Town at the Portway Stadium next week.

THOMPSON’S PERFECT AFTERNOON The perfect hat-trick was scored by Lloyd Thompson on Saturday afternoon after the midfielder scored with both feet and his head to help guide the Street to victory over Amesbury Town in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round. It was Thompson’s first senior hat-trick and his fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the season. The midfielder reflected on his three goals after the game. “I thought we started the game quite well, taking an early lead, particularly against a team a league above, it always helps settle the nerves and in turn allows you to play more football.” Thompson said to Word on the Street. “Though I do think 5/10 minutes before half time, we weren’t playing like we usually. This obviously led to a goal on the stroke of half time from a dodgy decision from the ref on Scotty. However, the second half turned back on its head and we were the better side again. Good to finally finish our chances and walk away with four goals. Not to mention the unreal atmosphere and celebrations in the changing rooms after the game!” The midfielder scored the perfect hat-trick, netting with his right foot, left foot and head to score the three goals, Thompson talked us through how the goals were scored. “I can’t lie, the first one weren’t my best goal… after a couple of chances from I think it was Reece and Robbie, the jump and contact was so poor I’m surprised it went in, but you got to be in the right place at the right time I guess. As for the second goal, Cooks has played me through with the keeper coming out, so I’ve just played it on my left side and tucked it underneath the goalkeeper.” “Then finally, with 10 minutes to go, I’ve seen the keeper do some weird throw to their full back and I’ve sort of anticipated his next pass, cut it

out and seen an empty net with the keeper in no man’ss land. When I saw the open goal, my first thought was ‘finally a hat trick for New Street’, but then I did think get the job done first f before getting ahead of myself! self! Anyway, it was a good feeling to finally score a few goals in a game… it’s been a long time coming and to see all the boys come and celebrate in the corner after, including Paddy, was even better.” The young midfielder will shortly be off to live in Dubai and we asked how the preparations for the move were going? “The he preparations are going well. I’m doing my best to stay fit so I can continue to play out in the Middle East. As for getting all the boring stuff sorted like visas and jobs etc, it has taken me a little longer than anticipated to sort, however I’ve been lucky enough to have a job offer now. So yeah overall the preparations are going well.” well. And will we ever see him back playing for Street? “100%. 100%. Even though it’s only been about a year now playing forr street, I can definitely see myself back in the shirt. From the management, to the other back room staff all the way to the players, they’re a great group of lads and it definitely will be a shame not playing with them week in week out. However… if (when) (when we get to the FA Vase final, I think I’ll have to travel back b and put that shirt on again.” again @AndoverNSfc

4 THE BOSS 3rd March 2020 Andover New Street 3-1 Petersfield Town

Danny Dolan looks ahead to today’s game

The Street were looking to bounce straight back up to the Wessex Premier following their relegation the previous season. A positive start with only 2 defeats in the opening 10 league games, which included a 4-2 victory early on at Love Lane, with second half goals from Jason Silver, Matt Marriner and a late Shane Lock strike sealing the three points after the Rams had gone 2-1 in front just after half-time. Following a 2-1 defeat at Laverstock & Ford in early December, the Street went on an impressive 10 game winning run, with high scoring victories at Fawley (5-0), New Milton (60).and East Cowes (4-1). Bemerton then ended the run with a 3-2 win at Foxcotte Park, with Jazz Beavis missing a penalty. The next visitors to Foxcotte Park were Petersfield, who were comfortably in mid-table and looking to dent Street’s promotion push. After receiving the January Club of the Month Award prior to kick off it appeared after forty five minutes that the perceived “curse” of same had struck again, but the second half was very much a different story. With the customary Respect proceedings abandoned before kick off the home side made very much the brighter start with visiting keeper Matt Petts saving at Shane Lock’s feet in the opening seconds. Reece Rusher won two corners in quick succession and a free kick was cleared after a mighty scramble in the six yard box but the anticipated goal did not come as Petersfield worked their way in to the game and then took the lead, albeit still rather against the run of play, after twenty minutes. Jazz Beavis

A routine long ball was totally t missed by a defender and the speedy Luke Hooper raced clear to slot the ball past Petts. The game entered the last five minutes with a sharing sharin of the points looking likely until Scott headed the ball down from a free kick and Hooper initially juggled it over his shoulder before turning and lifting it over the keeper. A class goal from a very promising player, who then completed his hat trick in stoppage time with another cool finish as the goalkeeper advanced. A sterling performance by the home side and whilst the plaudits go to Hooper the game was otherwise decided in midfield, an area which Petersfield dominated ominated in the first half but became Street’s domain after the break.

The Street put on a brilliant performance last Sunday in their league opener against Cowes Sports, which saw them score eight goals and keep a clean-sheet.

The third goal duly arrived 5 minutes later when Chevette Steel broke through to power her shot into the bottom corner. Cowes were then reduced to 10 players due to an injury and with no substitutes, manager Cowes did create a couple of openings and Kyla Tobin sportingly took off another player to Cherie Rowlands was forced to tip a looping make it 10 v 10. effort over the bar towards the end of the half. During the last 15 minutes the Street were breaking through with ease as Cowes played a high line, which made it easy for the Street ladies to play through them. Sam Meredith went close on a couple of occasions before Noni Davis cut inside her marker to score and then Shelena elena Woodley scored the seventh with another fine finish before leaving the field as Cowes lost another player to injury.

The Street continued to dominate the game early in the second half and on 55 minutes, substitute Kiera Seabrook raced through the static Cowes defence to make it 4-0 with a neat finish. Chevette Steel then made it 5-0 in the 62nd minute with another well taken goal and Jade Lucas so nearly made it six shortly after with a scissor kick following a Steel corner but was brilliantly kept out by the Cowes keeper. With just 9 players on the pitch each, lots of space started to appear and Noni Davis completed the scoring with another effort on 89 minutes. Steel was determined to end her first league start for Street with a hat-trick hat but saw her effort strike a post. A delighted manager Kyla Tobin told Word on the Street: “It’s a great start to the season, every player put in a performance today, t we’ve seen real progress over the close season as this result shows. It is still early days and a long season ahead but we now focus on a difficult game against Eastleigh next Sunday.” Sunday.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 WORST FOREIGN IMPORTS....

10 EMILIANO DIAZ (Oxford)

With Oxford Utd struggling to avoid relegation, Chairman Firoz Kassam brought in Argentine Ramon Diaz to try and steady the ship. It worked to a certain degree in that the U’s finished the season in mid-table. However, among the players that were brought in by Diaz were his two sons. Emiliano was a skilful, tough tackling rightwinger, with an eye for goal and two good feet. Well he would have been if he was playing with a bunch of six year-olds. In one memorable game away at Swansea, the fans got on his back by singing “The wheels on your house go round and round”, five minutes later, the away fans started joining in as well!

9

LI WEIFENG (Everton)

By remarkable coincidence, the moment Everton signed a sponsorship deal with a Chinese company in 2002, two Chinese players arrived at Goodison. Li Tie acquitted himself moderately well. The more introspective, chronically homesick Li Weifeng, who spoke no English, did not, despite his initial assertion that “I am very happy to be here because I like Liverpool very much. The Beatles are very famous in China”. He got himself booked in his sole Premiership outing, a defeat at Southampton. Soon he was on a plane home, and would not return to Merseyside for all the tea in China.

8

PAL LYDERSEN (Arsenal)

Poor Pal. It wasn’t really his fault that he wasn’t up to the task. The tall Norwegian full back had been signed in 1991 by manager George Graham, in effect, for a bung from

36

Lydersen’s disgraced agent Rune Hauge. Lydersen’s positional sense gave Tony Adams the screaming heebie-jeebies, and his overall standard was more Bury than Highbury. Graham was in a tricky position, so he hit on the inventive wheeze of only playing him in meaningless games, before releasing him four years later after 15 starts.

7

SEAN DUNDEE (Liverpool)

6

CORRADO GRABBI

In 1998, Karlsruhe were relegated from the Bundesliga. Their tubby star forward, Sean Dundee, scored just three times. These facts did not deter Liverpool manager Roy Evans from splashing out £2m for the German international who claimed to be as fast as Michael Owen. In fact, he wasn’t as fast as Liverpool fan Michael Howard. Liverpool’s official website noted that Dundee was “possibly the worst player to have donned the red of Liverpool”.

(Blackburn Rovers)

How the Italians chuckled in 2001 when Graeme Souness, manager of Blackburn Rovers, paid £6.75m for Juventus cast-off Corrado Grabbi, who had just scored 19 goals in 34 Serie B (not to be confused with Serie A) games for Ternana. Grabbi’s work ethic was never in doubt, but 2 goals in 30 Premiership games suggested Souness might have been better buying a Serie A player. After an especially profligate performance in the 2003 Uefa Cup against Genclerbirgli, Souness lost patience. Grabbi was bought by Ancona. The fee was undisclosed, but it wasn’t £6.75m.

5

ELENA MARCELINO (Newcastle )

Having watched Marcelino play the proverbial blinder in the 1999 Cup Winners’ Cup final, Newcastle manager Ruud Gullit decided the headband-wearing Spanish international defender was the man to shore up a porous defence. He wasn’t. Nor was he worth the £5.8m Guillit paid for him. In his first game, the poor lamb hurt his groin and was substituted at halftime. From there it was injuries all the way, including a lengthy absence caused by a poorly finger. Four years and 19 calamitous starts later, he was shipped back to Spain. In a crate, for all the Gallowgate End supporters cared. “The fans called me a thieving Spaniard and a gypsy who was robbing the club’s cash,” he said. For probably the first time in their relationship, chairman Freddie Shepherd almost concurred. “They say you should only say good things about people, so I’ll say this, he’s gone – good.”

4

MARCO BOOGERS (West Ham)

In 1995, West Ham manager Harry Redknapp had the option of spending £1m on Bristol Rovers sharpshooter Marcus Stewart or Dutch striker Marco Boogers. Bravely, he plumped for Boogers, without actually ever seen him play. In the event Boogers failed to start a game, but did achieve national acclaim on his second substitute appearance when he was sent off for a shocking tackle on Gary Neville, just 90 seconds after replacing Danny Williamson. After two further substitute appearances against Aston Villa and Blackburn, making a total of 83 competitive minutes in the Claret and Blue, Boogers fled Upton Park to live in a caravan, accompanied by a doctor’s note saying he was mentally unfit to play football. After two years of Calor gas canisters and chemical toilets, he returned to Dutch football with RKC Waalwijk.

3

WINSTON BOGARDE

(Chelsea)

When Chelsea thrashed Barcelona 3-1 in the champions League in 2000, assistant manager Graham Rix admitted they had targeted the defender they perceived as the Catalans’ weak link, Winston Bogarde. Curious , then, that a few weeks later, having fallen out with the Nou Camp management, the Rotterdam-born Rotterdam Dutchman who represented Holland in the 1996 European Championship and 1998 World Cup in France, became Gianluca Vialli’s final signing, a free transfer replacement for Emerson Thome. Good value? Well maybe not considering that he was on £42k a week! Four years and two games later Bogarde left London proclaiming himself “the biggest outcast in England”.

2

ALI DIA (Southampton)

Picture it. You are former Scottish hard-man hard Graeme Souness, now manager of a struggling Southampton side and the telephone rings. Who is it? Of course it’s former World Footballer of the Year George Weah offering you his 30-year-old 30 cousin who played 13 times imes for Senegal. Without a moment’s hesitation, you agree to take the player on loan. You try to play Dia in a midweek reserve team game, but the weather intervenes so you put your new budding superstar on the bench for Saturday’s game against Leeds. After Afte 32 minutes you replace Matt Le Tisser with Dia and the sense around the ground is very much of a torch being passed from one genius to another. Fifty-three Fifty jaw-dropping dropping moments later Dia is himself being replaced for the simple reason that he is cack and not a footballer. He isn’t even George Weah’s cousin, but his agent does a fantastic Weah impersonation, especially when Souness has never met Weah. Dia has not been heard of since!

@AndoverNSfc

37

1 MASSIMO TAIBI (Man United)

How then, to replace Peter Scmeichel? In 1999 with Raimond van der Gouw always wearing his bridesmaid’s outfit and Mark Bosnich too cocky by half, Sir Alex Ferguson splashed out £4.5m on Venezia journeyman Massimo Taibi. The omnipresent tracksuit bottoms should have caused Ferguson to pause for thought. Instead, Taibi conceded two sloppy goals at Liverpool on his debut and one to Wimbledon the following week. Then the fun really began! Southampton scored three at Old Trafford, including a Matthew Le Tissier “shot” that trickled through Tiabi’s legs and was so soft, it barely crossed the line. Eight days later, Chelsea put five past him at Stamford Bridge and this Italian’s job was over, little more than a month after it had begun. Taibi rotted in the reserves until Reggina took him on loan before a £2.5m purchase at season’s end. He was, noted a generous Roy Keane, “clearly a good keeper”. Clearly!

Travellers’ EDITOR KEVIN PIPKIN CONTINUES TO WRITE ABOUT FOLLOWING THE STREET ON THEIR TRAVELS THIS SEASON. THIS WEEK WE LOOK BACK TO THE SHORT TRIP TO AMESBURY TOWN...

TALES

AMESBURY TOWN ● SATURDAY 11th SEPTEMBER 2021 THE JOURNEY After the recent long trips to New Milton and also Cowes in midweek, it was nice to have a relatively short journey down the A303 to Amesbury for our FA Vase clash. During my time following the Street, I have never been to Amesbury, so it was a new ground to look forward to. After meeting at the club to pick up the kit and equipment, we make relatively quick journey to Amesbury and arrive at the ground in plenty of time and immediately start preparing the away changing room with the kit and also prepare the team-sheet.

THE GROUND Amesbury’s ground Bonnymead Park has it’s changing rooms and facilities on a raised bank behind one of the goals and a small main stand between the two dugouts on one side of the pitch and a small wooden fence, fence to segregate the ground from the public park, park on the other. The away changing room was very small with very little room. THE FOOD The refreshment kiosk offered hot or cold drinks, as well as a rolls or chocolate choc bars. There were no hot food offered that I could see and I didn’t bother with any food. THE PROGRAMME A 28 page full colour programme is on offer for the usual £1. There is a nice welcome message for the Street and I even get a special mention, offering congratulations on winning the programme of the year for last season. A very nice gesture! THE MATCH This was a very dominant display from Street when you think we were playing a team a division above, it certainly didn’t look that way on the pitch. The only downside was that we were drawing 1-1 at half--time after creating so many chances. We need not have worried as the second half is more of the same but we stroll to a 4-1 4 win thanks to a Ross Cook penalty and a perfect hat-trick trick from Lloyd Thompson. MAN-OF-THE-MATCH Lloyd Thompson for his hat-trick, hat he could and perhaps should have had even more with the chances we had especially in the first half but job done we are in the next round.

Non-League League Family Ties

By Matthew Badcock

It’s funny how things fall into place sometimes. As much as we plan The NLP’s pages each week, occasionally you stumble into the perfect storm.

“I could see what he was going to do so when he cut in and scored it was probably the best feeling I’ve ever had on a football pitch - you can see that from my reaction.”

Take last week’s paper, where three of our FA Cup previews worked perfectly in tandem with a family theme. In many ways, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Non-League football in particular has always had the family feel. In this weekend’s FA Cup, that’s no different. But these feel-good stories only served two underline just how many strong links run through the game.

There will be a slightly different feel at Brackley Town’s game with Coalville Town where Dean twins Gaz and Alex play each other in a competitive game for the first time. At 31, they’ve had to wait for the chance — although mum Gill isn’t thrilled about the showdown!

First stop is Nuneaton Borough, where dad and son are making waves in the FA Cup. Carl Baker has had a fine career that took him from Non-League with Prescot Cables and Southport to the Football League where he won promotions with MK Dons and Portsmouth, after spending five seasons with Coventry City. At 38 he may be on the back nine of his career, but he’s still going strong — although son Louis is now grabbing the headlines too. There can’t have been a much better feeling for Carl to be on the same pitch as his 20-year-old son, and Boro team-mate, when he scored an excellent goal against Lichfield City. “I probably celebrated his goal more than I’ve ever celebrated any of my own,” he said. “The stats on my GPS probably showed I ran quicker then than at any other time in the game as I went to jump on his back. It was a fantastic feeling. We were leading 1-0 at the time with about five minutes to go. As he’s striding up the pitch I’m on the opposite side thinking he should just go and hold it up in the corner.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“Mum’s not happy,” Brackley defender Gaz told us. “I got a text saying, ‘Be nice to your brother’. She says it’s her worse nightmare come true because she’s going to have one disappointed twin. But it’s probably my dad’s dream to see us go toe-to to-toe with each other – it’s opposite ends of the spectrum between the two parents, I think.” Alex added: “When we were little we were terrible — we used to fight all the time e over any sport in the garden. We were blessed with where we lived because we had a good d sized garden so we were forever playing football, cricket, badminton – anything like that. I am competitive. But he is ten times worse. He gets ever so grouchy.” Although Gaz has promised to buy his brother a pint in Brackley’s bar after. And at Sutton Common Rovers it will be a proud day for manager Darren Salmon. The gaffer has been involved with the club for 35 years having played and become manager of the team, then playing in Sunday League, aged 21. His dad, Alan, founded the club in 1978 and is i still chairman while his brother Justin is club secretary. Family ties will be everywhere in Non-League Non this weekend. We enjoyed scratching the surface.

league look Division One started on Friday evening when some three hundred people saw Laverstock & Ford beat Downton 5-0 at Church Road in an incident filled match. The visitors had two players sent off in the opening twenty five minutes but kept the score to 1-0 at the break. Laverstock scored again early in the second half before their numerical superiority showed with three goals in the last five minutes. On Saturday, a couple of miles up the road from Laverstock, Bemerton Heath defeated East Cowes Vics 4-1; Eddie Perrett, Justin Bennett, Ronan Clancy and Josh Moore against one from Jimmi Burton – while at the bottom end of the table there was a welcome 3-1 win for Infinity over Fawley AFC. Jamie White, Wayne Boud and Braydon Douglas scored for the League newcomers with James Clifton netting the Oilers consolation. The most important result however was probably on the Island where Newport defeated one of their nearest rivals, New Milton, 1-0 with Connor Kelly scoring the goal that keeps the Port in pole position in the table. On to the sixteen Buildbase FA Vase First Round qualifying ties. The largest reported attendance, 177, watched AFC Portchester beat Division One Romsey Town 4-0 courtesy of a hat trick from Kieran Roberts and a single from Marley Ridge. 4-0 at AFC Stoneham as well as the hosts bounced back from their midweek defeat to progress at Portland United’s expense. Duarte Martins (2), Will Wiseman and Mat Bainbridge with the goals as the Dorset side’s poor start to the season continued.

At Amesbury there was victory for Division One over the Premier Division as Andover New Street recorded a 4-1 success with a Ross Cook penalty and a hat trick from Lloyd Thompson too much for a lone Josh Carey goal. Hythe & Dibden are still seeking their first win in any Competition after going down to goals from Jake Wilson and Luke Cairns at Division One new boys Ash United and there was a surprise at Premier Division high fliers Baffins Milton Rovers where in form Andover Town won by three goals to one. Josh Bertie (2) and Adam Pattison scored for the winners with Ed Sanders getting the home reply. That superb win for Andover was matched by near neighbours Whitchurch United who travelled to Hellenic Premier League side Calne Town and returned home after a 4-1 victory with goals from Nick Yeomans (2), Dave Parry and George Bishop. Seven goals at Westwood Park with visitors Bournemouth accounting for four through Conor Jevon (2), Matt Steele and Tyrone Carkeet with Connor Furmidge, Morgan Perrin and Callum Chase replying for Cowes. Follands went out to a very late goal from Corsham Town at Hamble, the only goal of the game, but there were rather more goals at Five Heads Park. Horndean seem to have something of an eagle eye over Hamble Club for having beaten them 7-0 earlier in the season, they went two better with a 9-0 success this time round. Harry Jackson led the way with a hat trick, Zack Willett scored twice and Rob Taw, Ben Anderson, Evan Harris and Ash Howes were also on the scoresheet. Ash Pope and Aidan Sheppard saw Shaftesbury through at Millbrook and there was a comfortable victory for Moneyfields over Totton & Eling, Steve Hutchings (2), Bradey Norton and Josh Bailey scoring without reply from the Division One Club. Bashley journeyed cross country to Petersfield where two goals from Harrison White and one from Ollie Bradley ensured a happy ride back to the Forest.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN In November 2021, it will be 150 years since the first FA Cup games were played. Was it really 50 years ago that we celebrated the 100th anniversary with the bruising Leeds United v Arsenal final? Later this year, there’s a planned tournament involving the “original” teams from that inaugural competition. Although the legitimacy of some of those teams, notably Hitchin and Crystal Palace, is debatable, it looks good to have sides resembling those FA Cup pioneers. Meanwhile, the 2021-22 campaign has been underway for some weeks, but the road to Wembley started for clubs like Biggleswade Town and Hitchin Town on September 4, a local derby played against the background of speeding cars whizzing past on the A1 racetrack. Ironically, given Hitchin’s tenuous FA Cup ancestry, the Canaries ran out at Biggleswade in fuschia and black shirts, a startlingly eyecatching strip that is a marked improvement on their usual all-green away strip. The game attracted around 500 people, many of whom took the opportunity for a “day out” to see Hitchin away from home. Certainly, their support outnumbered the Waders’ contingent. Hitchin, who hadn’t had a good start to the season, losing three of their four league games, looked much better than their previous showing when they were comfortably brushed aside by a robust and experienced Royston Town. But against Biggleswade, Hitchin were in control from the start, playing confidentially and with a high level of energy.

The cup tie also provided rovided a reminder that the non-league league game is not just about watching 22 young men kicking a leather ball around. There was an atmosphere of rediscovery for some people, who had spontaneously decided they wanted to watch some football. The past 18 months have seen many a weekend routine destroyed by the pandemic. Fans are only just getting into their old habits of attending games once more and they’re clearly enjoying the experience. Win, lose or draw, it’s good to be watching football again. But we’re re all older and the players look younger – given the demographic of nonnon league football, 18 months away from regular games does have an impact of the appearance of most supporters. Hair has disappeared, crevices have developed on faces and those replica shirts s are now straining at the seams. Hitchin, for example, have lost a number of their senior supporters, including some legendary figures. It’s a reminder that football is certainly not more important than life and death. One loyal Canary, a so-called lled “legacy fan”, was seeing his first game as he’s boycotting the club because of the “online only” advanced ticket regime. As for the game it turned out to be a surprisingly stressless victory for Hitchin and kept their hopes of a lucrative FA Cup run alive for at least another couple of weeks. And there was the added bonus of £ 2,250 in prize money. What’s not to like about the FA Cup?
