ANDOVER NEW STREET v RINGWOOD TOWN SATURDAY 2nd APRIL 2022 KICK-OFF 3PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Welcome back to you all to Foxcotte Park for our final home fixture of the season with Ringwood Town. This afternoon’s match promises to be another keenly contested encounter. Ringwood Town have been on an excellent run over the past few matches that sees them pushing to move up from their current 14th position, so the Street will need to be on their mettle to ensure they continue their push for promotion this season. There’s plenty inside this afternoon’s issue including a match report on the previous game against Romsey Town last Tuesday and the thoughts of both manager Jamie Coleman and Football Chairman John Ward, and much more besides. As it’s potentially the last programme of the season, can I thank all those people that have contributed to the programme this season, including Andy Ormerod for his fantastic photos. Remember, if you have any feedback on the programme, please do get in touch with us. Enjoy the game! #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon, welcome back to Foxcotte Park to you all for this big game against Ringwood Town in Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with Ringwood Town, including their manager Richard Morse, his players and staff, plus the committee and supporters of the Town. Ringwood come into today’s game on the back of two wins and will be aiming to finish the season as high up the table as possible and have proven in the past that they can cause the teams at the top problems, their 5-4 victory over Bemerton a prime example of that. Of course, this fixture quickly follows our recent loss to Newport IOW last Saturday. It wasn’t an acceptable first half performance, which left us too much to do in the second half to salvage anything from the game. We performed better in the second period and for a bit of better finishing we may have got a point from the game. Tuesday night’s game with Romsey had all the makings of being a tough encounter and so it proved to be despite us taking a 2-0 lead in the first twenty minutes. We then let Romsey back into the game with the penalty but Cooky completed a perfect hat-trick before half-time to give us a 3-1 lead at the break.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get off to the best of starts in the second half and conceded a poor goal but managed to restrict Romsey after that and then extended our lead when Cooky got his fourth, when he was in the right place at the right time to fire home. We have been on a massive run in some very tough, very physical matches where there were some huge demands on the players. I’m very proud of what we are doing at the moment, and I believe that despite the fact we dropped points last Saturday, we have to keep fighting for everything. There will still be some twists and turns in the league, and if we can keep going, we still have a good chance to do it. The best way to get a disappointment out of your system is to look to your next game, and for us that’s Ringwood Town. You, the fans, have a massive part to play this afternoon, as you know. I’m sure we can count on you, as we have done all season. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Ringwood Town, here today for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into a strong position for promotion with our hardfought victories over Totton & Eling and Verwood Town and an impressive battling display in the draw with Bemerton over the last few weeks.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion either automatic or via the play-offs will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Today’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Ringwood will be

6

looking to continue their fine run of form that sees them coming into this game on the back of two 1-0 victories over Petersfield Town and last Saturday against Whitchurch United. With continued activity on and off the pitch at the moment putting the club in the local spotlight we have been inundated with companies interested in becoming sponsors, guests and partners of this fine football club. The current success of not only the first team but the Swifts and ladies’ sides is not only down to the players on the pitch but the financial support off it. If you’re interested in any sponsorship or would like to discuss any corporate partnerships with the Football Club please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Last week our Swifts side defeated North Waltham 6-1 to reach the North Hants Intermediate Cup Final. A massive well done to Robbie and the team. They will face Broughton in the final on the 28th of April at Longmeadow Sports Club with a 7:30pm kick-off. They also have a game here at Foxcotte Park, on the 13th of April, against North Waltham in the Teamwear Challenge Cup with a 7.45pm kick-off and the lads will be receiving their league title medals and trophy that evening.

We have come through a run of tough games, but we still have further difficult games ahead. Starting with today’s game and with Downton still to come. It makes for an exciting end to the season. We have finally moved up from 5th position into the top 3 and have a real opportunity to go up this season with a strong squad, that, could finish in the top half of the Wessex Premier.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another huge game as we take on Ringwood Town in another important game as we continue our pursuit of promotion to the Wessex Premier.

“EVERY GAME IN THE DIVISION IS TOUGH, ESPECIALLY AS WE ENTER THE FINAL MONTH OF THE SEASON.”

Today’s game comes after our disappointing defeat to Newport IOW last Saturday and then our midweek victory over Romsey Town on Tuesday night. The defeat to Newport was very disappointing. We didn’t get off the best of starts and were then on the back foot for the first 20 minutes. We then got back into the game when Reece’s cross was diverted home by the Newport defender. We then looked the better side but were then caught out twice before half-time to leave ourselves a mountain to climb. . What was frustrating was that Bemerton dropped points with a draw at Andover Town, but we still have a chance of gaining that automatic spot, but we need to win all four of our matches and hope Bemerton don’t pick up maximum points from their final 2 matches.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

We got back to winning ways with a good display at Romsey on Tuesday night.

Every game in the division is tough, especially as we enter the final month of the season. March has flown by with the number of massive games we have had against Bemerton, Andover Town and Newport IOW. We will continue to keep working hard and hope that a result will go our way. There is still a way to go yet and who knows how the final table will look at 5pm on the 16th of April.

Today is our final home match of the season, although that might change if we are in the playoffs. I would like to thank you all for your support over the past season and ask you to please get behind us again for our remaining matches as we look to get the three points this afternoon. Enjoy the game.

let's go THE STREET START WITH THEIR FINAL THREE MATCHES OF THE SEASON WITH A TRIP TO DOWNTON AT THE BRIAN WHITEHEAD SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB

DOWNTON WHO? Downton, aka the Robins, from the Brian Whitehead Sports & Social Club, are the Street’s opponents on the 5th of April. The Robins currently sit in 7th place in the league with 62 points and are a point behind local rivals Laverstock & Ford. The Street are the last visitors to the Nest this season and the Robins have one game left at Totton & Eling on the final day of the season. HOW THEY DOING? After a narrow 2-1

defeat at home to Folland Sports, the Robins then went on a five-game unbeaten run, which included wins over Ringwood Town, Andover Town, Newport IOW and Ash United. They also drew 2-2 with Bemerton Heath Harlequins. They then lost 5-0 to Laverstock before going another seven games unbeaten in league and cup, which included beating the Street in the League Cup. A 4-0 away defeat to Royal Wootton Bassett in the FA Vase halted the run and October ended with a 5-1 away win at East Cowes. Back-to-back defeats against the Street and Millbrook and a 1-1 draw at New Milton came before 3 victories at home against Devizes Town in the Wiltshire Senior Cup and league wins over Romsey Town and Verwood Town. December saw the Robins go unbeaten with 2 wins and 2 draws before a 11 draw at Folland Sports kicked-off the New Year. A heavy 7-1 defeat at Newport IOW was overcome with a win over Whitchurch and a 1-1 home draw with leaders Bemerton. Wins over

10

Whitchurch, Fleet Spurs, Romsey and AFC Fawley kept the Robins with an outside hope of promotion. March has seen the Robins overcome a 3-2 defeat at Petersfield with wins against Ash United and Millbrook. They also acquired silverware by beating v Heath 2-0 in the Wiltshire Senior Cup. Last Saturday’s surprise defeat at home to East Cowes has all but written off their chances of reaching the play-offs.

HOW TO GET THERE? The Brian Whitehead

Sports Ground is 38 minutes or 25 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A343 towards Salisbury. Continue along the A343 until it changes to the A30. Continue along the A30 onto London Road. At St Mark's Roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Churchill Way E/A36. At College Roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Churchill Way S/A338. At Exeter Street Roundabout, take the 1st exit onto New Bridge Rd/A338. Continue along the A338 and then turn right onto Wick Lane as you come into Downton. Continue along Wick Lane and the ground and car park is on the left.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

our last match was this season in the League Cup in early October when the Robins came out on top thanks to a 1-0 win with Sam Howe scoring the only goal with a fine e. The Street did win the last fixture between the sides, which was in early November when the Street won 2-0, with two late Mikey Davis goals securing the points in front of a crowd of 125.

welcome RINGWOOD TOWN

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Ringwood Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Town make the journey to Foxcotte Park for the first time since they won 4-0 back in October 2017, with River Smith scoring all four for Ringwood. The Street would win the return game later in the season thanks to goals from Jazz Beavis, Callum Sweeney and Zach Hine in a 3-1 win. This afternoon’s fixture promises to be an entertaining encounter with Ringwood looking to continue their winning ways after obtaining maximum points from their last 2 league games, with consecutive 1-0 victories over Petersfield Town and Whitchurch United. Prior to that they had a 6-0 midweek home defeat to New Milton Town and a narrow 2-1 loss at home to Andover Town. The Town didn’t have the best of starts to their first season in Wessex League One when they lost their opening two matches against Millbrook and Downton. Their first three points came with a 6-2 home win over Laverstock & Ford and then this was followed up with a 1-1 draw at East Cowes. August ended with a 4-3 defeat to Ash United.

To find out more about Ringwood Town visit: www.pitchero.com/clubs/ringwoodtown

September started with a 4-1 victory at Totton & Eling before the Town went on a 3league game losing run against Romsey Town, Petersfield Town and Andover Town. A 5-4 home win over league leaders Bemerton Heath was followed up with a 3-1 defeat to Fleet Spurs and then a 3-1 victory at Verwood Town. The Street won 1-0 at Long Lane thanks to Shane Lock’s early strike. Further defeats to Whitchurch United, Newport (IOW), New Milton Town, Folland Sports, Romsey Town and Bemerton gained revenge with a 5-0 home victory. Draws with Fawley, Downton and East Cowes begun a mini revival of form for the Town. Totton & Eling were defeated 2-1 thanks to goals from Ryan Hamm and Joe Petty. Top scorer Harry Smith scored in the 3-0 victory over Ash United, along with Harrison Fray and Ryan Hamm. February saw the Town start with a 3-0 away defeat to Newport (IOW) with Jordan Browne, Joe Butcher and Joe Craig on target for the Isle of Wight side. Before a 6-1 defeat against Folland Sports ended a miserable month for the Town. A 2-1 home win over Millbrook, with Hamm and Joss Horton on target, kicked started March before the defeats to Andover Town and New Milton as mentioned earlier. Town sit in 14th

bluffers guide Ringwood Town FC... THE CLUB Few football clubs in Hampshire can boast that they are over 140 years old, but an ancient copy of the old Ringwood Almanac reveal that Ringwood Town Football Club was formed in 1879. The club is first mentioned in county records in 1886 when it used the title of Ringwood Hornets. The team was disbanded during the 19141918 war and was re-established in 1918 as Ringwood Comrades, consisting mainly of servicemen returning from the battlefields. In 1936 the club reverted to the name of Ringwood Town Football Club but was disbanded again during the Second World War. In 1946 the club was listed as Ringwood and Welworthy Football Club but soon reverted to the title of Ringwood Town FC and has played under that name ever since. The club played at Carvers Playing Fields during the 1950s and 1960s but an ambitious club committee, encouraged by Ringwood Town Council, laid the foundations for the club to move to the present Long Lane ground. Successive committees have continued to improve the facilities at the ground such that the club was able to join the Wessex League in 2004. Ringwood Town have won the Bournemouth Senior Cup on 4 occasions and runner up on a further four. In 1980 the club recorded its most memorable achievement when Southern League opponents were defeated to win the Russell Cotes Cup. Since then the club was promoted to Hampshire League Division One only to be relegated the following season. The club has had notable success in the Bournemouth Leagues and in the Bournemouth F.A. Page Croft Cup.

To find out more about Ringwood Town visit: www.pitchero.com/clubs/ringwoodtown

During 2003-04 season the 1st team reached the final of the Hampshire League Floodlit Cup whilst the reserve team won the Hampshire League Combination 2 Division. In 2005-06 the 1st team finished 9th, with the reserve team 5th in their respective divisions. The re-formed Sunday team won Bournemouth F.A. Division 3 with an unbeaten league record and a new League record, conceding only 9 goals in 22 matches. This improvement was not maintained in 2006-07, with the club finishing next to bottom of the Wessex League Premier Division. Wessex League Division 1 has been their mainstay since. Current manager, Richard Morse, was appointed in June 2018 and is very ambitious to improve on our average league position of 11th and meet the Club’s aspirations of promotion back to the Premier League. RINGWOOD – THE AREA Ringwood is recorded in a charter of 961, in which King Edgar, gave 22 hides of land in Rimecuda to Abingdon Abbey. The name is also recorded in the 10th century as Runcwuda and Rimucwuda. The second element Wuda means a 'wood'; Rimuc may be derived from Rima meaning 'border, hence "border wood." The name may refer to Ringwood's position on the fringe of the New Forest, or on the border of Hampshire. William Camden in 1607 gave a much more fanciful derivation, claiming that the original name was Regne-wood, the Regni being an ancient people of Britain. In the Domesday Book of 1086, Ringwood (Rincvede) had been appropriated by the Crown and all but six hides taken into the New Forest. Prior to 1066 Ringwood had been held by Earl Tostig. During the 12th and early 13th centuries Ringwood, like other manors of which John and Henry III had the immediate overlordship, frequently changed hands.

STREET 1-0 NEW MILTON TOWN COOK 40

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street moved back into third place in the table, after grinding out a narrow 1-0 victory over New Milton Town last Saturday. Reece Rusher was halted in full flow by a well-timed tackle by Elliot Lines and two corners came to nothing before the dangerous Tyrell Sampson took play to the other end with a surging run.

MOMENTS

Rusher broke clear again and was halted by onrushing keeper Luke Dennison with the ball rebounding off his arm, but the referee was saved a difficult decision by a late offside flag. The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock in a furious goalmouth scramble during which the ball was cleared off the line and also struck the post, but it was the home side that did open the scoring five minutes before the break. Awarded a free kick on the left touchline, Rusher swung in the perfect cross and Ross Cook’s header flew into the top corner of the net. Perhaps slightly against the run of play but a picture goal in all respects.

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Both sides made a bright start to the second half with Sampson cutting in from the left and striking the far post and Rusher seeing a shot parried by Dennison after collecting a long cross-field ball from Joe Wright. Another Sampson run won a corner and Street replaced Mike Gosney with Mikey Davis. The substitute’s first action was to win and take a corner on the left that was cleared to the edge of the box and met first time by Liam Hibberd with a shot that Dennison saw late and did well to parry. Cook was too high at full stretch and though the visitors were enjoying more of the possession, the home side looked the more dangerous. Max Allen replaced Chris Flood and immediately cleverly turned a Shane Lock through ball into Davis’s path and his curling shot rebounded off the crossbar to safety with the goalkeeper no more than a bystander.

Dennison bravely dived on a loose ball in a crowded six-yard box and a New Milton cross fizzed across the area with nobody able to get a touch before Hibberd queried a decision and was sentenced to ten minutes in the sin bin – with fourteen minutes left on the clock. Street were running down the time now and another low cross came to nothing before Dennison was at full stretch to deny Cook, and the game ended on a strange note when Davis pulled the ball back from the by-line and Lock was adjudged to be offside. Another three valuable points keeps the Street in the hunt for promotion, with both Newport IOW and Folland Sports dropping www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet points.

WHAT’S THE STORY?

With games running out as the end of the season approaches this was a game Andover New Street had to win following the defeat at Newport’s hands three days earlier, but they were made to fight all the way by a determined and skilful Romsey side before claiming the three points. Both sides were going forward at every opportunity, and it was the visitors who made the breakthrough after fifteen minutes, A superb cross field ball from Liam Hibberd found Gosney on the left, his instant control and footwork gained him space and the ball was pulled back for Ross Cook to find the bottom corner of the net from some fifteen yards. This was the first of three goals inside five minutes as Ross Cook, despite looking off balance, stretched to head home a Shane Lock cross at the far post before a Romsey break on the left was halted by a rash challenge and Jack Odam squeezed the penalty in between the post and O’Brien’s hands. As Romsey looked for the equaliser Adam Pearson stopped Ollie Jenkins in the act of shooting, Joe Rogers blocked another effort and a promising break by full back Alex Wilson foundered through lack of support. Five minutes before the break New Street struck again as Gosney superbly cushioned a through ball into Ross Cook’s path and the finish was clinical, giving the striker the perfect hat trick. One left foot, one right foot and one header. Romsey started the second half very much on the front foot and reduced the deficit almost immediately as Jenkins rose highest to head a free kick high into the roof of the net. It was New Street who delivered the killer blow. The home defence failed to clear a free kick and after some pinball in the area Cook stabbed the ball over the line for his 4th.

Ross Cook goes close to scoring in Tuesday’s win over Romsey Town. This time he is denied by Romsey keeper, Jordi Valero. However, Cook did score a perfect first half hat-trick and added a fourth late in the second half.

The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith.

East Cowes continued to show some fight and netted their second of the match through their top scorer Jordan Browne.

Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by heavy defeats at Romsey and Christchurch. By the end of September the Street were just 1 point off top spot and were in 5th place. East Cowes were the next visitors and were second from bottom in 18th position with just 2 points out of 6 games.

Yates netted his second of the game on 84 minutes and four minutes later substitute Nic Turpin put in number six to complete the scoring. The victory would keep the Street in 5th place and how little did we know that they would go on to achieve promotion promot to the Wessex Premier for the first time in the club’s history.

The home side took just fifteen minutes to take the lead as Lock netted the opener. East Cowes however then came back into the game and equalised before half time after missing several clear chances.

SEASON REVIEW AUG P8 ● W3 ● D2 ● L3 ● GS15 ● GA14

NOV P8 ● W6 ● D0 ● L2 ● GS24 ● GA9

Defeat on the opening day, away at Whitchurch, deflated what had been a promising pre-season campaign. But a great display at Shepton Mallett in the FA Cup earned a replay before bowing out with a 4-0 defeat. A local derby with Andover Town came next and we somehow found ourselves 2-0 down despite dominating the half. A point was rescued through Cameron Thatcher and a late Ross Cook strike. Normal service was resumed with a 5-0 win over Fleet Spurs, with a Luke Hooper hat-trick. A 2-0 defeat at Moneyfields signalled a Hampshire Cup exit before an impressive display saw a 3-1 win a New Milton and then a Ross Cook hat-trick saw a 4-3 League cup win over at Cowes, despite playing over an hour with 10 men.

Four wins on the bounce started November, Downton, Ringwood, Andover Town (North Hants Cup) and Romsey were defeated before a muchchanged side exited the Russell Cotes Cup to Locks Heath. The FA Vase adventure was over with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Wessex Premier Hamworthy United. Totton & Eling felt the backlash to that defeat as the Street notched 8 goals. Hooper, Thatcher and Reece Rusher all notching braces. Verwood was seen off 3-2 with the game being played in blustery conditions.

SEP P4 ● W4 ● D0 ● L0 ● GS20 ● GA3 Another 5-0 victory at Foxcotte Park against East Cowes started the month before a 4-1 win over Amesbury in the FA Vase with Lloyd Thompson netting a hat-trick. Thompson was on target again as the Street ran riot with a 7-1 win over Petersfield, Shane Lock earning a hat-trick this time. The month ended with another local derby at the Portway in the FA Vase and Daryll Phillips made an immediate impact by scoring inside the first minute and ending the game with the match ball in a fine 4-1 win.

OCT P6 ● W3 ● D1 ● L2 ● GS12 ● GA12 A month of mixed results for the Street with 2 league wins over Folland Sports, Ross Cook coming to the rescue in the last minute and another hat-trick from Cook sealed a 3-1 win at Fawley. Dropped points at home with a 3-3 draw with Millbrook, while a 3-0 defeat at Laverstock & Ford and also a 1-0 defeat to Downton in the League Cup. But the highlight of the month was the progression in the FA Vase with a superb performance at Cribbs, goals from Cook and Lock took the Street into the next round.

DEC P2 ● W1 ● D0 ● L1 ● GS4 ● GA2 Short month with games postponed during the month due to waterlogged pitches. One game that was played and perhaps shouldn’t have been was at Newport (IOW), with the sodden pitch causing a number of injuries, notably Jeffery and Cook leaving the pitch early through injury. The Port winning 2-1 with all 3 goals in the first half despite the Street pressure in the second half. The only other game saw the Street ease to the three points with a 3-0 victory at Fleet Spurs, Lock, Owen and Lawton on target.

JAN P6 ● W3 ● D2 ● L1 ● GS10 ● GA10 The New Year started with a 2-0 win over neighbours Whitchurch, early goals from Cook and Lock saw off the Jam Boys in front of a crowd of 240. The biggest game of the season then took place at leaders Bemerton Heath. Harry Lawton’s spectacular strike and an own goal saw off Bemmy, who made a fight of it, even with 10 men. A 3-3 draw with Laverstock & Ford followed before another spirited display from the Street saw them earn a point at Folland Sports, despite playing the second half with 10 men after Cook’s dismissal. A dismal 4-0 defeat to Alresford in the North Hants Cup was followed up with a narrow 2-1 win over Fawley. Lock returning from injury to net a late winner.

FEB P5 ● W5 ● D0 ● L0 ● GS29 ● GA4 As far as perfect months go, this has to be up there with the best of them. A well-fought 7-1 win at Millbrook, despite going a goal down. Reece Rusher played a part in seven goals, scoring 5 and setting up the other 2. Chris Flood got off the mark following his dual signing from Hungerford Town. The Street hit seven again the following Tuesday against Ash United despite no recognised striker in the side. Jeffery fully deserving his hat-trick with an energetic display. Then 3 goals in six minutes earned the points at Petersfield with the returning Liam Hibberd coming off the bench. Another signing, Mike Gosney made his debut in the game against Totton & Eling and created the opener and also got on the scoresheet in the second half of a 5-0 win over the Miller’s. The month ended with another 7-1 win, this time over Verwood Town in the re-arranged fixture. The Street were 6-1 up at half-time with Lock scoring 4 but could only add one more after the breakthrough Flood.

MAR P5 ● W2 ● D2 ● L1 ● GS8 ● GA6 A BIG month of important home matches started with leaders Bemerton Heath visiting Foxcotte Park. The Street were the happier side with a point following the 0-0 draw, but perhaps should have won the game with Joe Wright hitting a post and both Hibberd and Rusher being denied by superb saves by keeper Creese. A narrow 1-0 win over New Milton Town came courtesy of a great Ross Cook header. The local derby with Andover Town saw a league record attendance for the season of 570 watch a tense and nailbiting encounter with both sides desperate for www.ansfc.co.uk

the three points. The first half saw the Street miss several chances but eventually took the lead in the second half, through a great Cook strike, after Town had hit the bar from Holmes. The Town did earn a point however when Adam Pattinson was left unmarked at the back post to drill home. Last Saturday saw another important weekend with Andover Town taking points off leaders Bemerton Heath with a 1-1 draw. However, Street could not take advantage as a below par first half display saw them trail Port 31 at the break. And despite an improved performance in the second half, could not earn any points, with Shane Lock’s goal in the second half only turning out to be a consolation. Tuesday night saw the Street return to winning ways with Cook scoring all four goals in a 4-2 win over Romsey.

APR The Street end the month with today’s final home game with Ringwood and then three massive away fixtures at Downton, Ash United and East Cowes. With other matches elsewhere also impacting the final league standings, the final outcome could be decided on the last day with Bemerton Heath entertaining Andover Town, who could also require points to secure a play-off space with Laverstock & Ford looking to make a late surge into the top 5. If the Street do end up in the play-offs then it would mean a match-up with either Folland Sports, Newport (IOW), Andover Town or Laverstock & Ford depending on the final league positions. With second place at home against fifth and home advantage also going to third place, as they entertain the fourth placed side.

TOP TEN COLLECTION WE CONCLUDE THIS SEASON BY LOOKING AT THE TOP 10 STRIKERS OF ALL TIME.... 10 GIUSEPPE MEAZZA ITALY

Perhaps the greatest player Italy has ever birthed, Giuseppe Meazza was football's rock and roll throughout the 1930s and 40s. When not effortlessly slicing through defences with runs and firing a ball home for Inter or Italy, he was setting up a teammate and looking good doing it. Meazza transcended the football world and became an icon away from Italy, enjoying life's finer fruits away from the pitch while still playing out of his skin.

8

ROMARIO

BRAZIL

The pinnacle of penalty box merchants, Romario made a career of being ruthless from close range. The Brazilian made the toe poke finish look exquisite which tells you all you need to know, and starred on domestic and national fronts, notably with fellow Brazilian Ronaldo. Go and read his stats if you must, but just know he's the sixth highest scorer of all time and now your favourite Brazilian socialist.

9

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI

POLAND

Something about him playing in a league with a poor defence in an exceptional team. Absolute rubbish. Robert Lewandowski could come to your house for tea and still find the back of the net in a football match in another country. His scoring rates have transcended ridiculous, and he now embodies the 'scoring for fun' phrase. 41 Bundesliga goals in a single season has seen him snatch the record from Gerd Muller. 41!.

7 MARCO VAN BASTEN NETHERLANDS

Injuries poisoned one of the greatest forwards of all time just as he was entering what is said to be a player's peak years, but that's what makes Marco van Basten even better. The Dutchman didn't need those peak years to convince the world of his greatness. By age 28, Van Basten retired with over 300 goals, three Ballons d'Or and trophies at domestic and international level. Sometimes, things are better left short and sweet.

6

ALFREDO DI STEFANO

ARGENTINA

Alfredo di Stefano's excellence with Los Blancos throughout the mid-20th century has been key in setting a modern-day precedent that forever sees Real Madrid held in immeasurably high regard. 216 goals from 282 games in the league alone with Real Madrid doesn't even account for his heroics in European competition. The Argentine was a wizard on the field and his abilities in inspiring Real to new heights remains a key component of the club's success in the modern day. and one Ballon d'Or.

38

5

FERENC PUSKAS

HUNGARY

Another iconic name from Hungary's golden era, Ferenc Puskas has also shaped modern football. The man who has inspired the Puskas Award, the Hungarian possessed the perfect balance of flair, power and passion. Puskas excelled on all fronts and official records have him down as the games third highest scorer with a mesmerising 808 official goals.

4

EUSEBIO

PORTUGAL

Eusebio possessed an unimaginably powerful, rocket shot before it was ever cool to do so. The Portugal international is considered one of the best ever and ripped it apart for Benfica throughout the 1960s and 70s and finished top scorer for Portugal at the 1966 World Cup. Eusebio is considered by many greats from a similar era as the greatest to play the game. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

3

GERD MULLER

GERMANY

There are fewer nicknames in football as cool as Der Bomber which signifies just how electric Gerd Muller was. The German loved a goal and possessed a magical IQ which allowed him to thrive in close range finishing. His mind blowing 1971/72 season saw him bag 40 league goals in one campaign and has only been bettered once in the time since. 68 goals from 62 international caps and a winner at the 1974 World Cup, too - good effort.

2

RONALDO

BRAZIL

The man who can make perhaps the worst haircut of all time become an iconic look in pop culture. While Romario was dominating the penalty box for Brazil, Ronaldo was dominating just about everywhere else. R9 turned heads wherever he showed up to play and struck fear into opponents, fans and stadiums across the globe. O Fenômeno is truly an icon.

1 PELE BRAZIL

Go on, moan about how he's a fraud. Boring.

Face it, Pele's records are obscene and there are enough clips floating about to prove that he was absolutely scintillating. Yes, those friendly records are a tad ropey, but what isn't ropey is how - aged 17 - put the world on watch as he danced his side to the 1958 World Cup. Pele is the blueprint. The greatest of all time.

NON-LEAGUE CELEBRATIONS

By Jon Couch

We have a saying at NLP Towers, probably not too dissimilar to the thoughts of thousands of fans up and down the country each and every Saturday. While the concept of Non-League Day must be embraced and celebrated , for us, every day is Non-League Day. We live and breathe it 365 days a year as I know you all do too. So, even though last Saturday was ‘just another day’ at the office for us, for others it opened up the game at this level to a wider audience while players from the top two tiers of the English game were representing countries over their clubs. And what an introduction they had. Back after a two-year Covid-forced absence, Non-League Day made a hard-hitting return to the fixtures calendar with fans flocking in their droves to get a piece of the action. None more so than at Notts County for the big game of the day where a stonking crowd of 10,334 witnessed their derby visit of promotion rivals Chesterfield, who themselves contributed 2,719 visiting fans to that gate. At Step 2, a gate of 3,317 saw in-form York City take on Leamington – and turnstiles clicked furiously lower down the pyramid with Ilkeston Town attracting just short of 1,000 for their visit of Yaxley at Step 4. Non-League Day, as we know, is renowned for its special events and celebrations – and this year’s occasion didn’t disappoint. South Shields’ 1st Cloud Arena was the destination for Alex Scott and the BBC’s Football Focus team as the cameras witnessed the celebration of the Mariners’ visit of Stafford Rangers. Those who stuck around after the match were able to watch England’s friendly with Switzerland and even join in with a bit of karaoke!

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Dover Athletic fans had a day to remember too. Those who made the long trip up to Wrexham were not only treated to free pies by their hosts, but also an 11-goal thriller with Jordan Davies’ 98th-minute winner clinching a stupendous 6-5 victory for the home side. Co-owner Ryan Reynolds should be used to such scripts as a Hollywood A-lister but even he tweeted that he had “lost nine years of his life” given the high-octane entertainment which saw his side hit back from 5-2 down against the already-relegated Whites. In Southern Central League Division One, Welwyn Garden City celebrated their centenary with a bumper crowd clicking through the turnstiles for their match against Wantage Town. Fans watched the match for free and at the same time learned about the club’s 100-year history with an exhibit in the clubhouse with many former players and coaches turning up to support them. Aylesbury Vale Dynamos also allowed fans in for free if they donated an item of clothing to those affected by the war in Ukraine or KitAid Africa. Half-price tickets were on offer at Harrow Borough as they took on Merthyr Town in the Southern Premier South while, at Redcar Athletic, entrance was just £4 by proudly wearing a red Middlesbrough FC shirt. A dance troupe and marching band greeted fans of Wessex League side US Portsmouth. So, another huge Non-League Day success and plenty to crow about as the season comes to a nail-biting head, both in the leagues and on the road to Wembley in the FA Trophy and FA Vase. But, as mentioned earlier, every day is NonLeague Day for us regulars and your continued support remains as vital as ever in keeping your football club alive – and at the heart of community

league look The final Saturday in March, which tends to signify that the end of the season is approaching, and nothing is really settled, especially in Division One. Hamworthy United however, look increasingly likely to take the Premier Division crown and added three more points to their tally with a 2-1 victory at Blackfield & Langley. George Over gave the home side the lead before goals from Cameron Munn and Harvey Wright turned the game in the visitors’ favour. Bashley are in second spot and have opened up a four-point gap on those behind them after a comprehensive 5-0 defeat of Fareham Town at Station Road in front of an attendance of 452, most of whom will have no doubt enjoyed a Matt Tubbs hat trick and two strikes from Adam Grange, all in the first half. Third place Shaftesbury suffered their heaviest defeat of the season as they went down 5-1 at home to AFC Portchester. The latter have been among the goals of late and five different scorers made a marked improvement to their goal difference. Sam Pearce, Felipe Barcelos, Lee Wort, George Barker and Archie Greenough were the marksmen with Aidan Shepherd getting a late consolation for the hosts. Horndean returned to winning ways with a best of five goals win at Portland – the usual pairing of Connor Duffin (2) and Zack Willett claiming the goals with Portland’s credited to George Borthwick and an own goal – but Brockenhurst went down again, losing 3-2 at AFC Stoneham. Scott Hills with two and Jim Orvis scored the home goals with Mitch Speechley-Price and Addwell Chipangura replying and the win moves Stoneham in to the top five. Alton scored twice late in the game through Rob Carr and Liam Knight to record a 2-0 victory at Baffins Milton Rovers and Alresford defeated Cowes Sports 3-1 at Arlebury Park. Alfie Mahon with two and Sutcha Shepherd scored the home goals with Teddy Mumford notching the sole reply. Bournemouth’s recent fine run came to a crashing halt as Hamble Club, ever inconsistent, won 5-1 at Victoria Park with goals from Ryan Wilkins, Sanchez McLean and Jamie Ovington adding to two from Kelvin Robinson before Nil Canadel scored a late consolation for the home side. The final game between US Portsmouth and Christchurch ended in a goalless draw. In Division One it was a bad day for Andover New Street as they were the only side in the top five to not get at least one point after they went down to a 3-2 home defeat to Newport. Connor Kelly, Joe Craig and

48

Josh Younie scored the Port goals with Shane Lock and an own goal making up the Street double. Just down the road Andover Town and Bemerton Heath shared two goals and the points – Ryan Griffiths and Harry Beckley on target – but no problems for Follands, the fifth member of the leading quartet. They defeated Millbrook, who have fallen away badly after a good start the season, 9-0 at Hamble with seven different scorers. Connor Rowe and Nathan Gray both scored twice with Jake Long, Tremayne Moore, Gus Banhire, Ethan Anders and Matt Casey making up the nine and taking Follands past the 100 League goals mark for the season.

There was a surprise defeat for Downton, 1-0 at home to a Sam Cant goal for East Cowes Vics and New Milton also suffered a home defeat, 3-2 at the hands of Petersfield, Tyrrell Sampson and Chris Long put the Linnets ahead in the first half before Petersfield scored three times to take the points. Cameron Smith, Charlie Merritt and Ryan Kennedy being their scorers. Sadly, Ash United have yet to provide their details following their welcome 3-0 win over Verwood Town while towards the other end of the County a late Ryan Hamm penalty, the only goal of the game, gave Ringwood Town the points against Whitchurch. Home keeper Joel Hirdle suffered a serious leg injury early on and his stand in later saved a penalty. We trust the player has a speedy recovery. In the game played on Friday evening Romsey won 3-0 at bottom Club Totton and Eling courtesy of goals from Jack Odam, Craig Bryant and Adam Shepherd, the only consolation for the Millers being a gate of around 200.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN For around 30 years, Hitchin Town’s attendances were remarkably consistent, rarely wavering from 350-400 people, sometimes dropping a little when things were not going so well on the pitch.

The club’s image was one of an austere place where middle-aged men got their regular dose of live football, some occupying the same spot on the terrace or in the stand for many years. The fans were loyal but ageing by the season. The crumbling wooden terracing, rusting corrugated metal and damp fibre board fencing did not entice younger fans. The perception was very much Top Field as a museum piece full of old boys. Success has never been consistent at Hitchin, but since 2018, when the Canaries reached the first round of the FA Cup, the club has undergone something of a transformation off the pitch. On the field, the football has deteriorated but this doesn’t seem to have affected the mood of the club. Far from it, in fact, for the enthusiasm for the club seems to be on the rise in the market town of Hitchin. It may just have something to do with economics, for Hitchin has become an upwardly mobile town where smashed advocado is consumed in the many – too many – cafes and bars and coffee (the new tin of beans barometer for the price of goods) can cost as much as £ 4 for a latte. House prices have become unrealistic and young people are being driven out of their hometown, rather like nearby St. Albans. Hitchin has, since the 1980s, always been a dormitory town, but the pandemic has driven disposable income back into the local economy. Part of that could well be a shift into supporting local entities such as a football club. More than ever, people are realising that attending matches at Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, among others, is a pastime of the wealthy and well-heeled. Taking a family to the Emirates is almost like splashing out on a budget-price holiday. The pandemic and the lack of spectator-permitted football may have got some people out of the habit. How many people feel comfortable being in a 60,000 crowd anymore or squeezing onto public transport?

54

This may have diverted football fans away from £50 tickets to the more manageable and accessible non-league game. Admittedly, the quality of football leaves a lot to be desired, but then how many times have we come away from a major stadium event disappointed? Hitchin Town’s attendances are quite unexplainable, averaging 480 this season for league games, despite their form. Interestingly, the impressive figures have come in 2022, where the average is well over 500. Even Monday night matches have attracted decent crowds. One reason could be the growing interest in the club among younger people. The demographics have certainly changed, boosted by a more inclusive attitude at the club. In the past, the club hosted special days for the armed forces/services (part of the game’s obsession with the military) and women, but this has broadened to include a rainbow laces day which shows a definite transformation of mindset. Demonstrating this level of awareness is very good to attract younger audiences and marks any club as being modern, forward-thinking and keen to embrace all sectors of the community. Non-league football has long needed more women to ensure there’s less testosterone around and the influence of people like Kate Dellar, whose tireless energy has been very influential, is very evident. Hitchin Town is virtually unrecognisable from the club of the 1990s and early 2000s and this bodes well for the future. If the club can attract such attendances when the team is struggling, then even moderate success could be rewarded with four figure crowds. At the special “pay what you want” game against Rushall Olympic (a muchneeded 2-0 win to ease relegation worries), there were over 600 people present. This does make you wonder what lower admission prices might deliver – at present, non-league football is still too expensive at some clubs and the success of flexible entrance fees shows that other people think that way too.
