THE MANAGER

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for today’s game against our visitor’s Ringwood Town.

I’d like to welcome the Ringwood management team, their staff, players and all officials and supporters who have made the journey to Andover this afternoon. Ringwood are a club, who have struggled over the past few seasons battling at the wrong end of the League One table. This season they made a terrific start by winning their opening three matches and have provided stern opposition against Andover Town, Newport IOW and ourselves in the reverse fixture back in October last year

The Town have always been a tough opposition for us, and I expect nothing different this afternoon. We will need to be at our very best to get a positive result.

We come into the game having continued our impressive unbeaten run in the league into the new year with victory over league leaders New Milton Town.

I thought the game with the Linnets was a good advert for the Wessex League. Both sides went for it in difficult conditions

I’m not being biased when I say my team were magnificent, and so were you in the stands. We showed great character to weather the New Milton attacks in the first half and scored a great goal from a Mikey Davis corner that beat the keeper and gave Scott Hassell the easiest of headers to give us the lead.

In the second half, we showed the attacking prowess we have as we grew stronger and created a few opportunities to double our lead but were denied by resolute defending by our hosts

Just when it looked as though we would hold on to a 1-0 win, Cooky broke through to make certain of the points and put us level with New Milton with 5 games in hand.

This has put us in a strong position moving into January, with so many matches to play this month, the whole squad will be needed if we are to maintain our levels of performance.

Enjoy the game.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

WITH MATT BADCOCK – NLP EDITOR

It’s the debate which has raged on in Non-League football for years but one which, up until now perhaps, has consistently been likened to flogging a dead horse.

But now it appears there could be light at the end of a long dark tunnel.

With all but a couple of National League clubs are operating full-time – and often out-performing many of their League Two counterparts –surely it’s only right that the idea of increasing the number of promotion places from the top-flight to the Football League to three is revisited?

At their current pace, the National League’s top three of Notts County, Wrexham and Chesterfield are all on to go through the 100-point barrier – and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they all (only) exceeded 90.

But with just one automatic promotion spot, and six ultimately battling it out for the second place through the play-offs, there are going to be some very disappointed clubs when the bubbly has dissipated in a few months’ time.

This week, NLP editor-at-large Matt Badcock spoke to three of the Football Conference’s unlucky losers from over the years – NonLeague legends from the last decade who missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins, despite enjoying groundbreaking campaigns.

Wrexham fans still talk about their 98-point season. A cloud has hung around since 2012 when they missed out to Fleetwood Town by five points.

In the play-offs, they had their second chance wrecked in the semis by a Luton who finished 18 points behind.

Kidderminster Harriers felt similar pain the following year. Steve Burr's side racked up 93 points, but Mansfield Town won it on the final day, finishing two clear. Kiddy went out in the semi-finals, ironically to Wrexham.

As it stands, talks are currently deadlocked between the EFL and Premier League for more funding from the top-flight. It is acknowledged, however, that the EFL have a responsibility to assist clubs further down the pyramid and the best way of achieving this, in many eyes, is by offering an additional promotion place.

Currently, no fewer than seven clubs in English football’s third tier have come up through the NonLeague system over the last decade or so, with one club, Luton Town, competing in the higher reaches of the Championship.

“It’s not like they’re asking for a lot – it’s only one extra space,” said Steve McNulty, who eventually won promotion into the EFL three times with Fleetwood, Luton and Tranmere Rovers.

"There has got to be some compromise somewhere. They’ve got to bridge that gap and give clubs a chance.”

THE WESSEX LEAGUE PREVIEW

Sadly we start again with the weather which, as almost per normal now, decimated proceedings with five matches in the Premier Division and four in Division One falling by the wayside.

The Premier Division programme started on Friday evening with Christchurch earning a creditable point with a two all draw at Moneyfields. Ryan Pennery notched both the home goals with Fawzi Saadi and Jack Barton, in the dying seconds of the game replying. With AFC Portchester and Horndean not in action, AFC Stoneham confirmed their second place with a 2-1 win over Cowes Sports, but they were given a fright. Fin Phillips gave the Island side the lead in the first half only for two late goals from Jim Orvis and Liam Callaghan to deprive them of the points. Goals at Gang Warily where Blackfield & Langley defeated Brockenhurst 6-2 helped by a hat trick from Sam Woodward. Nick Yeomans started proceedings with a brace and Junior Kamara completed the six. Ollie Dennett and an own goal registered for the visitors.

Goals also at Portland where the home side and visitors US Portsmouth shared six between them. Six different scorers as well with Ben Morris, Liam Sayers and Greg Borthwick claiming the home goals and Danny Burroughs, Brodie Spencer and Reece Frost replying. We understand that Harry Thomas has made 50 appearances for Portland, not bad considering he is not quite 18.

Three good and welcome points for Paghman, to win by the odd goal in five against Shaftesbury at Nyetimber Lane. Oscar Johnson with two and Alfie

Davidson for the home side while Ash Pope claimed both the Rockies goals.

Into Division One and we start with the game at Fawcetts between the top two in the table, New Milton Town and Andover New Street. It finished 2-0 to the visitors thanks to goals from Scott Hassell and Ross Cook and the two sides are now level on points at the top of the table.

Two more promotion contenders, Folland Sports and Newport met at Hamble with a lone Jordan Browne goal giving the Island side the points. Downton remain in the running following a 3-0 win at Romsey –Cam Butler, Theo Wolfarth and Tom Rafferty on target. We heard that referee Ade Skeates had a medical issue before the end, we understand that he is OK, and it was likely due to a chest infection from Christmas. Ringwood and Ash United finished three apiece, while two goals from Louis McWilliams gave Verwood victory over Amesbury

Fleet Spurs registered their first points of the season with a 2-1 win over East Cowes Vics at Beatrice Avenue. Ollie Manning scored the two all important goals with Charlie Marsek replying for the Vics. No significant changes to the tables with some Clubs having now reached the halfway mark in terms of matches played.
