THE MANAGER

Good afternoon and welcome to Foxcotte Park for today’s Sydenhams Wessex League One fixture against Totton & Eling. I’ll start by welcoming Ben Hillman his staff, their squad and all officials and supporters who have made the journey up from the south coast with Totton. These are my first notes since taking full control as First Team manager and can I say that I am privileged to be taking over from John Smith and Iain Meechan. Both are, I’m delighted to say, staying at the Club as Director & Assistant Director of Football. I know how much both of them love this football club and it’s great that they can now channel that passion across the club, not just the First Team and help and give advice where they can. I’m sure they were surprised by the reaction and messages of thanks and best wishes in their new roles from not only the players, staff and friends but also from outside the club as well. They can look back on their time as First Team managers with pride with where they have taken this club and also put it in a great place for its future.

together with the support of the backroom staff and John, Meechs and the football committee we can build on last season. I’d also like to say thank you to everyone that has made me so welcome at the club since I joined at the start of the year. I feel so comfortable here and I thank the committee, the staff, the players and supporters who have taken the time to wish me luck with taking the role. role Looking back since our last home game, we know that some of the performances haven’t been good enough. We have played well in patches but I saw a significant improvement against New Milton last Saturday in the FA Vase. It wasn’t the result we wanted by going out on penalties but I thought we totally bossed the game and if there was to be one winner in the game then it would come c from us. We must look forward now to today’s game, which will be a tricky game for us. We will prepare for this match like any other fixture. We are simply taking it one game at a time and that’s what we focus on in training. training May I also wish Robbie Skeates and the Swift side all the best this afternoon against Moneyfields Reserves in Division One of the Hampshire League. Enjoy today’s game and let’s hope we can all enjoy a glass of something this thi evening with another three points in the bag. Stay safe.

I’m also really pleased that Jamie Coleman has accepted the role as my assistant manager and

MATT SCOTT

GREAT SCOTT THE CAPTAIN’S LOG

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Foxcotte Park for what will no doubt be a tough game against Totton & Eling this afternoon. First of all on behalf of the players can I say thank you to John Smith and Iain Meechan for what they have done for us lads over the last few years and also the club itself. When you look back , you’ve both done a great job and achieved a lot, especially looking back at where the club was about 5 years ago, you’ve turned it around. Also best of luck to the gaffer, not that he will need it and also to his new assistant, JC. A well deserved promotion! Last Saturday’s performance I thought was excellent and to also keep a clean sheet – plus we could have won the tie if not for some bad luck in front of goal.

It’s going to take the whole squad to achieve what we want to achieve this year. If you’re in the team or if you’re out of the team, you’ve got to play your part. We are a team and we’re all in it together as it’s a long, long season. We set high standards here, and we didn’t play the way we know we can at our o last home game against Petersfield. Our performance improved in patches last Tuesday against Bashley and at times we looked a really good side against Wessex Premier opposition, who could shift the ball about the pitch really well. Totton & Eling have e a former team-mate team of ours in their ranks in Rian Fear. He may only had a short time with us but we are looking forward to seeing him. We know it’s going to be a tough game. We need to bring the same level of intensity that we had for the first game of the he season against Newport IOW. Having you behind us giving us the support will play a massive part, so please give the lads everything this afternoon. I hope you enjoy the game.

It was good to see Danny Urry get through another 90 minutes and also good to see the youngsters coming off the bench with both Kai and Harris putting in good performances and pushing for first team starts.

THE BOARDROOM

CHRIS WHITE Good afternoon and welcome to Foxcotte Park for this afternoon’s match against Totton & Eling. We live in a very peculiar world, don’t we? Since my last programme notes so much has happened. We have lost many dear friends and loved ones and our thoughts go out to you all – this has been a truly horrible time for some. My last programme notes were written when we were pushing for not only promotion but also looked to close the gap on the league leaders US Portsmouth with a number of games in hand on them and with a few points to make up.

As we see all the time, at all levels football is a game where current form and momentum play a major part, so let’s hope we can put together another great run of results, starting with this afternoon’s match. match We continue to invest in facilities and personnel to improve our competitive edge. Under John Smith and Iain Meechan this club has flourished and has gone from being in the bottom two of the Wessex League One to competing for promotion to the Wessex Premier. I would like to thank them for their efforts as first team manager and assistant and I’m delighted you have both agreed to take on the challenging roles in the club. Today’s match will be another tough encounter as are all Wessex League One fixtures, where anyone can take points off anyone. Totton come into today’s game on the back of a 2-1 1 defeat against neighbours Andover Town and were unfortunate to not take something from the game as they hit the woodwork on three occasions.

That seems like a world away now as we now look forward to this new season that is already 5 games (including cup-ties) old.

Finally thank you for your continued support. We appreciate the efforts you go to and will always endeavour to repay that commitment on the pitch.

Last Saturday saw us go down in a defeat on penalties to New Milton Town. We all felt we deserved to go through and played some decent football but goals win games and our finishing was awry. A lot of the games we have lost in the past have been down to silly mistakes at one end missed chances at the other.

Enjoy today’s game.

TRANSFER ROUND-UP UP The Street have been busy over the extended break to strengthen the squad with a number of new faces – and a very familiar one after the briefest of spells away – as we kick-off the Sydenhams Wessex League One season. We offer a warm Foxcotte Park welcome to the first half-a-dozen recruits, some of which are well-known to Manager Danny Dolan having worked with goalkeeper Sean O’brien, Scott Kinge, Connor Thorne and Brett Denham during his time at Tadley Calleva, all add a wealth of experience in both Wessex One and also the Wessex Premier.

BRETT DENHAM POSITION: FORWARD | AGE: 28 STAUS: SIGNED AFTER LEAVING BADSHOT LEA

Danny Field joins from Bemerton Heath Harlequins and has been a target to bring to the club for a few seasons and the management team are delighted to have him finally on board. Gary Thorne has returned to Foxcotte Park following a brief move to neighbours Andover Town last season and completes an ever impressive defensive unit. The majority of last season’s squad have resigned, including fans favourites Shane Lock, Max Allen and Kieron Le Brun. We did however said goodbye to Luke Hooper, who has earned a place at Eastleigh Academy and we wish him all the best of luck. Rafa Ramos also left to try his luck at Southern League football and joined Sholing.

HE SAID: “II worked with Danny Dolan for a few years at Tadley. I really enjoyed working with him and he got the best out of me, so hopefully he can do that again, I have played Wessex Premier a few years ago under Danny and Adam Clark, so hopefully I can show what I can do again.”

We wish all our former players well with their new clubs and thank them for their service to the Street.

When I left last season I thought it was the right decision as I feel the time away has made me a better player. After speaking to John and Danny and seeing the calibre of signings coming in helped massively with my decision. ”

DANNY FIELD POSITION: DEFENDER | AGE: 27 STAUS: SIGNED AFTER LEAVING BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS HE SAID: “I decided to return to New Street because it’s my local club and after a few seasons away I wanted to get back enjoying my football again. MATTHEW HARTMAN HARTMANN Hartmann, who recently joined the Millers, Millers arrives at Millers Park following a short stint at neighbours AFC Totton.

Hartmann went through the ranks at Portsmouth until he was released at the end of the 2006–07 2006 season. In his final year with Portsmouth, he went out on loan to Weymouth eventually making a total of four appearances for the club. In July 2007, Nottingham Forest signed Hartmann on a free transfer joining as a third year academy member. By July 2008 he was released and signed for Bognor Regis Town on a free transfer and made five appearances for the club. In early September 2011, Hartmann signed for Filipino side Loyola Agila, thus joining his two brothers who already play for the club. In April 2015 Global announced that Hartmann has signed with them and joined up with his brother Mark Hartmann, Hartmann who was already with the club. On 1 March 2019 Hartmann signed for Southern League side Gosport Borough ugh before moving to AFC Totton in June 2019. He can play in either midfield or defence and made his debut in the 6-1 1 away defeat at Alton earlier this month. month @AndoverNSfc |

PLAYERS...

CLUB HISTORY The Club was formed in 1925 as Bramtoco FC from the workforce of the British American Tobacco Company and changed its name to BAT Sports in 1971, the same year as they entered the Hampshire League. They progressed through the Leagues, winning Division Two in 1975 and being Champions of Division One in both 1988 and 1989. At that time the installation of floodlights, the construction of a small stand and a permanent fixed barrier enabled them to join the Wessex League. An additional stand and covered standing area followed in due course. Since joining the League they have twice reached the 3rd Round of the FA Vase, on the second occasion being drawn against AFC Wimbledon. They worked hard in getting a side that would compete and were eventually rewarded in 2009 winning the 1st Division easily with over 100 points and goals regaining Wessex Premier Football again. The next year the Club moved to their new and present ground Miller Park at Little Testwood Farm which is adjacent to AFC Totton.

They managed to stay in the Premier division until 2015 when with a lack of funds with having no clubhouse and a real lack of people to help, the club got relegated to Division 1 after a great fight back right till the end of the season which saw them narrowly relegated on the last day of last season. They have been rebuilding the club over the last couple of seasons with their youth and go again this term in Division 1. WORD ON THE STREET | ANDOVER NEW STREET V TOTTON & ELING | 26.09.20

Following relegation from the Wessex Premier, the Streets’ tough start to 2019-20 – a 1-1 home draw with US Portsmouth – caused a little anxiety amongst fans, but the Street then went on a 3 game winning run, which included a 3-0 victory at Millers Park. A climb into the promotion places began, there were a couple of setbacks along the way and after a 1-0 defeat in the League Cup again at Millers Park and a 2-1 defeat away at Laverstock & Ford a short while later. Most fans knew a run of winning results was required to get back into the Wessex Premier. The run of results the Street went on after that defeat in Wiltshire was

amazing, and 5 back to back victories later catapulted the Street back into the promotion frame. The first match back after New Year was against Totton & Eling, with the Street bringing in newly acquired striker Rafa Ramos from Brockenhurst to partner Luke Hooper upfront. Ramos would cause the Millers backline all sorts of problems and in the first minute he bullied a defender off the ball and powered his way towards goal and finished well to the delight of the Street fans behind the goal. Burns would equalise for the Millers on 23 minutes and then a crazy final 3 minutes to the first half saw Ramos claim a Hat-trick but Matthews had equalised again for the Millers between Ramos’ second and third strikes. The Rafa show was far from over as he got his and Street’s fourth goal just after half-time. He then powered in a 5th with a bullet header on 50 minutes. To everyone’s surprise there was no further scoring until Max Allen popped up on 86 minutes to score a rare goal to make it 62, but the scoring was not finished and the Millers got a 3rd goal from the penalty spot in injury time through substitute Dan Gain.

STORY OF THE MATCH A unfortunate own goal from Scott Kinge proved to be the game’s only goal as the Street failed to build on the previous Saturday’s excellent performance at Newport IOW. The result could have been so much different if Shane Lock had been able to put away his opportunity in the 5th minute of the game. Lock was put clear following a high press on the Petersfield defence and he saw his right footed effort pushed away by Rams keeper Jackson.

The Rams then created a half chance when Charlie Merritt broke down the right and played in Matt Andrews but the Rams striker fired over the bar. The only goal came just after half-time with a Will Webb free-kick into the area being headed into the far past by Kinge while under pressure. The Street brought on Kai Sterne, Brett Denham and Danny Urry in an attempt to get back in the game but found Jackson in fine form as he denied Sterne and also dealt with the crosses into the box. However Denham could still have got a point with the last touch of the game but saw his effort rise over the bar.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street were knocked out of the Sydenhams League Cup at Bashley last week. The Wessex Premier side played some terrific football at times and the Street played well in spells but ultimately were left to rue defensive lapses that cost them the tie. Bashley went ahead on 20 minutes through McGrath and this was followed by a Morgan strike on 24 minutes that Sean O’Brien had no chance of stopping. The Street had chances and early in the second half Shane Lock reduced the deficit with a fine strike and the Street nearly caught their hosts out when they hit the bar on the hour. Then another defensive mistake saw Morgan grab his second of the game and then the quick Alexander, who recently joined Bashley from Sholing, made it 4-1 with a goal on 80 minutes to send Bashley into the next round.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street suffered a painful penalty shootout defeat to New Milton Town in the FA Vase. The Street dominated the game and will look back on a number of missed chances, especially in the first half but in the end the Linnets progressed to the next round to a home tie against Totton & Eling. The first half started with the Street very much on the front foot and Brett Denham was unlucky when he was put through and saw his shot crash against the crossbar. The second half was very much the same with the impressive Danny Urry producing a fine performance. However no clear openings were created and so the tie went to penalties. Both sides produced some quality strikes until O’Brien produced a great save on the New Milton 3rd penalty, only to see first Kai Sterne and then Jake Curtis have their efforts saved. O’Brien got a touch on the New Milton 7th penalty but couldn’t stop it entering the net for the Linnets to progress.

URRY UPBEAT DESPITE VASE EXIT Striker looks at the positives after sudden death penalty defeat Danny Urry says that he and his Street team-mates are striving to get back to level they reached last season before the global pandemic. The striker put in a great performance in the FA Vase tie last Saturday and was a constant threat to the Linnet’s backline. With the match ending in a stalemate and no extra time, it was decided on a penalty shootout, with Urry coolly stepping up to despatch the Street’s second penalty. Unfortunately, Kai Sterne and Jake Curtis saw their efforts saved despite Sean O’Brien producing a fine save during the shootout and also getting close on numerous occasions. “I think we have picked up performance wise, we’ve been playing a lot better and we’ve been competitive this afternoon.” “We’ve bossed the game today and created a few chances but we just don’t seem to be able to convert the chances at the moment, but it’s only a matter of time and it will all click together.” he added.

By Kevin Pipkin The Street are now out of both the League Cup and FA Vase after Tuesday night’s defeat at Bashley but the Street forward is focused solely on gaining promotion. “The main aim for us this season is to finish off last season’s hard work and gain promotion this season. “I think we’ve got a great squad, a great group of lads who have never wavered, Our focus shifts straight to Saturday’s game at home against Totton,” he said. “We’ve worked hard on the training pitch with Jason and JC this week and we will be ready. We all believe that every game, home or away we can pick up points. We just need to start to build momentum, starting with Saturday.” Urry is certainly motivated to continue working hard for the team, insisting; “I will keep grinding, as long as the gaffer keeps believing in me that’s the main thing, I will try my hardest to get us in the promotion places.”

THE CLINIC

JUDE FLEET Welcome to Foxcotte Park for today’s match against Totton & Eling. These are my first programme notes of the season and with the help of Pete Tunney, we will give you an insight into the medical side of the club. I’m just going into my third year of university studying Sports and Exercise Therapy at Solent, Southampton University and this will also be my second season with The Street. So far I have gained lots of experience not only doing the first teams pitch side first aid but working alongside Pete in the treatment room. I’ve also been given the opportunity to work independently with the newly formed women’s team.

Once all the pre-match match things are sorted with the players, I will walk across the pitch and sit in the dugout, watch the game and watch for if any players get injured. When players get injured on the pitch I will run on assess the injury and determine de whether the player is alright to continue playing or if a substitution is needed. When a substitution is needed to replace the injured player I will further on assess the injury when in the dugout. The majority of the injuries I have seen are either eithe serious impact injuries or rolled ankle sprains. I would say ankle sprains are the most common injury in football. When rolling an ankle inwards, it will affect the 3 different ligaments that are on the outer side of the ankle. This will affect the outer er ligaments as they would w be over stretching and there re are 3 tests that can be performed to indicate what the damage is on the ankle.

Before kick off on a match day, I will shadow Pete and watch him treat, assess and revaluate any new or reoccurring injuries. Treating injuries require specific techniques to the needed area as well as deep tissue massage if needed. Pete is currently teaching me the Swedish massage techniques. This will allow me to learn the different massage styles that need to be used when doing a pre-event massage. Having this new skill set will allow me to perform pre-event massages on away games of and when players need it.

Testing positive for any one of the tests will tell me that there is some sort of damage to the ankle. Then obviously, testing negative will show me that the player has little to no damage to the ligaments. After testing positive for any one of the tests, I will wrap an ice pack around the ankle to decrease the swelling and tell the player that they’re will need to rest. They will need to continue to ice the ankle then attend regular treatment sessions will Pete on Tuesday evenings.

MY STREET

THIS SEASON WE ARE ASKING FOR SUPPORTERS TO GO DOWN MEMORY LANE AND ANSWER A SELECTION OF QUESTIONS BASED ON THEIR TIME FOLLOWING THE STREET. GLEN BUTTERFIELD KICKS OFF THIS FEATURE AND SHARES HIS VIEWS AND SELECTS HIS ALL TIME FAVOURITE STREET XI

Name: Glen Butterfield

League football with Sunday league players. It was a bad day at the office but I can’t remember who it was against.

Age: 60 Where do you watch games from: Behind the goal. First game: I can’t remember who it was against but I know I had taken on the role as Reserve Team Manager here and the 1st team finished second in the Hampshire League in 2002. First memory: It would have been when I took over as Reserve team manager, Paul Reidy had asked me to come up here and I was managing Amesbury at the time. We had a good season. It was a successful season for the club. Best goal seen: It has to be the season we got promoted. We were away at Tadley and were down to 10 men. I think Callum Sweeney had got sent off. It was 2-2 and Luke Neller hit a free-kick from about 20 yards out and he’s bent it around the wall and I was behind the goal, as soon as it left his foot I knew it was in. Best match witnessed: Alresford Town in the North Hants Cup Final at Basingstoke. That was a quality night, I loved it. And that 3rd goal when it went in, it knocked the stuffing out of them! The worst match: When I was managing up at the club, we lost about 10-0; we struggled to get a side together. During that time it was difficult to get players up here. We had no money. The decent players around were at Andover and Whitchurch Utd. No disrespect to the players we had at the time, but you were trying to play Wessex

Best Individual performance by a player: Again I go back to the season when we got promoted to the Wessex Premier. There were some great performances that season, Lockey, Gunner, Nic Turpin. Turps could turn a game on six-pence. pence. Matty Scott has been phenomenal at times in games. In midfield you’ve got Callum; I’ve seen Paul Reidy control games. Then you’ve got Rafa Ramos, who on his debut was unbelievable last season. He scored 5 goals in 50 minutes and was quality, so going on recent memory I’d have to say Rafa. Favourite Street kit: Green and black stripes. It is what it is. I like the one we have now, the Nike one. Favourite All-Time Time Player: Nic Turpin without a shadow of a doubt.. He came to play for me here in the reserve side. It was hard to get him to come here, but the thing with Nic is he e was so loyal, once he signed for you that were it. It didn’t matter who came in for him and offered whatever amount of money they offered him, he was with you for the remainder of that season and in regards to being a central striker, he could score goals goal for fun! Whenever we were in trouble he always came up with a goal, if you gave him half a chance he would score goals and I still think he could do this now. I love New Street because... because it’s a great family club,, I’ve got some great friends here over the years and you just feel part of it. To me this place is home, at other clubs I just did the job, here it’s personal. Once you become part of it, you’re hooked.

GLEN’S ALL TIME NEW STREET XI: GK: DAVE TASKER

Mr Reliable, in my opinion, when he was in his prime I think he was the best keeper in Hampshire. There was no keeper better than him. He gave some outstanding performances.

RB: PAUL REIDY

He’s out of position but he had to be in my side and he could play anywhere. Reidy gives 100% every game and he could ping a ball with that left foot. He was quality.

LB: MARK KEOGH

He had bags of potential, I loved him. Not a big bloke but blimey when he went into a tackle! He didn’t let anyone dominate him. He was reliable and is a great lad.

CB: STU ANDERSON

He was past his best when he played at New Street but he was still so good! He’s an honest 100% player, even if things were going bad, he’d still be giving the same effort that he did in the first minute. He would run himself into the ground. He’d give blood, sweat and tears.

CB: MATT SCOTT

When he left New Street at the end of the promotion season, you could see the hole in the side, we were missing him. He does what he has to do, nothing fancy – he just goes about his job and always gives 100% effort, rarely has a bad game.

RW: SHANE LOCK

He’s Mr Dependable. Some of the games I’ve seen him play, he’s been outstanding. His work rate is absolutely phenomenal. He’s a box to box player and a great lad. I’d never pick a side and not have him in it! Also knows where the goal is.

CM: JAMIE COLEMAN (C)

He played for me in the reserves as a young lad and you could see his potential. He was always going to be a good player. He wants to win; he hates losing, so I don’t know why he supports Spurs! He loves the club, it’s in his blood.

CAPTAIN | JAMIE COLEMAN

CM: CALLUM SWEENEY

So many games he took it by the scruff of the neck and turned it around for us. One pass, one run, one shot, the games turned in our favour. And a nice lad. I wish he was still here.

LM: GUNNER YATES

I’ve known some good left midfielders in my time but Gunner’s got pace, enthusiasm, drive. He’s daft as a brush, he just makes me smile. Got bags of energy and is dangerous when w he takes on opponents.

ST: NIC TURPIN

He’s a top draw bloke, he was unbelievable for me. As I’ve mentioned earlier he was always able to score from anywhere. He was lethal and banged goals in for fun. He’s still doing it now for the Swifts at the age of 40!

ST: VINNIE RUSHER

You couldn’t have a New Street side without him in it! I saw him play when he was a young lad l and he was unbelievable. He’s a natural goal scorer.. His left foot was sublime. I’d love to have seen him and Turps play together as they th would have fought to see who could score the best goals.

MANAGER: PAUL REIDY

I’d love to have managed this team with so much quality. I’d have walked up here bare footed to manage this lot. But I’ve got to pick somebody else, it has to be Reidy. Tactically, he’s very switched on, always knew what to do. When we managed together we always listened to each other and I’ve got loads of respect for him.

ROBBIE SKEATES

SWIFTS UPDATE Frustrating afternoon for The Swifts ends in a draw after 3 consecutive wins. The Swifts came up against an inform Headley United, who came into this fixture with an impressive win last time out. The Swifts started slowly with the visitors starting on the front foot. The Swifts then grew into the game and began creating chances, bringing some good saves from the Headley goalkeeper. The half time whistle sounded around Foxcotte bringing the two sides in level at the break with the home side perhaps edging the first half and unlucky not to be ahead. There was an instant reaction from the motivating words of Swifts manager Robbie Skeates as the home side creating multiple chances and were unlucky not to find the first goal of the game. Headley always looked dangerous on the break, soaking up the pressure and countering with real pace through the middle.

Some ome days it just isn’t meant to be and for our forwards that was the case this afternoon. Their keeper has made several crucial saves to deny us all three points.

Finally, Cam Thatcher who had been unlucky not to score earlier in the game found the net with an emphatic finish. The game settled once more with both teams struggling to keep possession before the visitors then equalised with a closeclose range finish. With th the game level entering the later stages of the match, the Swifts went on the attack and tried to find the winner that they deserved on reflection. The home side created chances but were halted by a determined Headley defence. The game finished 1-1, 1 with The Swifts looking to get back onto winning ways next weekend in a tough away trip to Moneyfields Reserves. Swifts manager Robbie Skeates said after the game; “It was a very frustrating afternoon, I feel robbed of the two points. However, some days it just isn’t meant to be and for our forwards that was the case this afternoon. Their keeper has made several crucial saves to deny us all three points. “That’s football, I’m now looking for a reaction next week, which is a very hard test for our side, awayy to Moneyfields Reserves, who went unbeaten all last season.”

LADIES ANDOVER NEW STREET 5 AFC BEDHAMPTON VILLAGE 0

HARRISON HAT-TRICK ENSURES THE STREET LADIES START THE SEASON WITH A WIN Andover New Street Ladies started with an impressive 5-0 victory in their season opener against AFC Bedhampton Village. The newly formed ladies side started the season in Division Two of the Hampshire Women’s League and Megan Harrison led the way with a hat-trick and further goals from Nikki Barnes and Shelena Woodley gave the Street the three points in front of a crowd of 108. The hosts were 3-0 going into the break when Nikki Barnes scored following a fine passing move. Street missed several decent chances after the break, before Shelena Woodley surged forward and broke into the area and managed to beat the advancing keeper.

Harrison arrison then completed her hat-trick hat with another great finish. Street Manager Kyla Tobin was delighted with the win and performance. She said after the game; “We We started the first half very nervously as we did not know what to expect following our move from Division 4 to Division 2. However, However once we settled down we played some good football, especially the move for the third goal. “Defensively Defensively we looked solid and we pressed well and kept a good tempo. tempo The only downside was the injury to Woodley. ANDOVER LAUNDERETTE

IN MEMORIAM

JOHN COLEMAN Last Saturday marked the 7th year since the tragic passing of one of the clubs most recognised officials – John Coleman.

Someone we will never replace. Not only was he a great workmate but he was a genuinely nice guy who was always willing to help and would go the extra mile.

John was a qualified coachbuilder who worked at Locomotors for many years before stints in the building trade and at Ducal before moving to Foxcotte Park. He died suddenly after being taken to Basingstoke Hospital in September 2013 and left a huge hole in our lives. Club chairman Martin Tobin described John as “Someone we will never replace. Not only was he a great workmate but he was a genuinely nice guy who was always willing to help and would go the extra mile.” “He was responsible for the catering, the pitch and the maintenance at New Street and was and still is a massive loss.” Both his sons, Sam and Jamie had played for New Street, with Jamie the club captain for the last few years. John’s smile, laughter and personality remains sadly missed by all those at the club.

The memory of John will forever be remembered in the Street’s history and his passion and dedication remains with his son Jamie, now first team assistant manager and also the main club bar proudly named after the great man.

FORMED: 2013 | NICKNAME: THE BLUEBIRDS | 2018/19 SEASON: 18TH IN WESSEX ONE FOLLOW THEM ON TWITTER: @ANDOVERTOWNFC | COLOURS: BLUE & WHITE GROUND: THE PORTWAY STADIUM | MANAGER: RON BERTIE

WHO?

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Now in their 3rd season back in the Wessex One after being relegated as punishment for failing to take promotion to the Division One West of the Southern League, when they finished runners-up in the Premier Division in 2017-18. The following season saw major changes at the club with Ron Bertie in charge being assisted by Jason Holmes. The club finished 18th in the 2018-19 season with 26 points. The following season saw progression but was cut short due to the global pandemic.

Apart from the regular Charity cup match played each pre-season, season, the last competitive game between the two sides was last season at Foxcotte Park, with a below par Street performance fortunately winning 2-1 1 in October 2019. Callum Sweeney opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Zach Hine equalised before Jake Curtis headed in his first Street goal.

KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU A large number of players have played for both clubs, including current Street players Shane Lock, Alex Dockree, Danny Urry, Matt Scott, Gary Thorne and Gunner Yates have all played for the Bluebirds, while Dave Tasker, Owen Trapnell and Zach Hine are current Town players. Reece Rusher, Zac Neve and Sam Mills have also represented both clubs in the past. 68

STADIUM – THE PORTWAY STADIUM The club took over Andover F.C.'s Portway Stadium following a vote at Test Valley Borough Council in July 2013. The stadium stad had been built in 1989 at a cost of £850,000. A large stand with bench seating was built on one side of the pitch and slightly raise above it, with the other three sides left open. After being refurbished, the ground was reopened on 28 December 2013 forr a match against Team Solent, with Andover winning 4–0 0 in front of a crowd of 161.

LEAGUE LOOK THE LATEST IN SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE The FA Vase attracted most of the attention but there were five League Matches played, two in the Premier Division and three in Division One. The meeting of two of the season’s leading sides to date in Division One ended in an emphatic 5-1 victory for Laverstock & Ford over Alton. Russell Jones, always a contender for any Golden Boot Award, scored a hat trick with further goals from Archie Lovegrove and Dom Jackson. Phil Moore getting the Brewers consolation. Totton & Eling scored first at the Portway through Ryan Lomax but were then “joshed” as goals from Josh Hewson and Josh Bertie gave Andover Town the points. In the final game Whitchurch could not build on their midweek League Cup win over Portland, going down 2-0 at home to Petersfield for the Rams’ second away win in a row with goals from Jordan Sullivan and Jake Alford. The Vase started on Friday evening with seven goals at Fawley as Ringwood won 4-3 with goals from Ryan Osman, Callum Williams, Ryan Hamm and Sammy Brown. Declan Hartigan with two and one from Tom Rafferty for the Oilers. Continuing with the all-Wessex games on Saturday Eddie Perrett and Justin Bennett gave Bemerton Heath a two goal lead at the break at Portchester but Lee Wort (2) and Joe Johnson turned it round in the second half to complete a sad off-the field week for the Salisbury Club. Daryll Phillips and Cal Laycock ensured that Alresford and Stoneham finished

one all at Arlebury Park before the visitors came out on top in the penalty shoot-out and penalties were also needed at Baffins Milton Rovers where again it was the visitors who won through. Tommy Scutt and Sam Emeney scored for Baffins with Conor Whiteley getting both goals for Bashley. Lymington continued their fine start to the season with a three goal win at Amesbury courtesy of Craig McAllister, Conrad Churchill Churc and Sam House while on the other foot Portland’s problems show no sign of improving with Hamble Club scoring four times without reply in Dorset. Brendon Chebby (2), Mackenzie Gange and Ryan Wilkins completing a bad week for the Blues. Follands went down wn by the only goal of the game at Blackfield, scored by River Smith but there were no goals at all at New Milton with the home side eventually defeating Andover New Street 6-5 6 on penalties. Based on last seasons form the last of these ties looked like a home h win but not to be as goals from Callum Butler and Edgar Zanin gave Verwood a fine two nil success at Hythe & Dibden. Eight games against “foreign” opposition on the day -Newport Newport entertain Calne Town today – and five successes for the Wessex League. Brockenhurst ckenhurst came from behind at Corsham, a Jude Nwachukwu penalty leaving the score at one all with the Badgers going through 6-5 6 from the spot and penalties also at Westwood Park where Aidan Redford and Alex Wright scored in Cowes Sports’ two all draw with Devizes. This time it was five four in the Wessex Side’s favour in the shoot-out. Mal Thomas hit two and Leo DeCarbo one as Fleet Town beat Newent Town from Gloucestershire 3-1 1 and in front of the largest crowd of the day Romsey routed Selsey 4-0. 4 Some 250 people saw James Clifton (2), Keiran Hancock and Charlie Rattley score the goals that earned Romsey a home tie in the next round. Further north Tadley Calleva also scored four, with a hat trick from Josh Drew and an own goal proving too much for visitors Wallingford Town who could only manage one goal in reply. On the debit side Brandon Hayward gave East Cowes Vics the lead at Beatrice Avenue only for Western League Westbury United to score twice in the second half and Downton found Farnham Town to strong in Surrey, losing 4-2 4 with Lee Vint and Ben Smith on the scoresheet. Lastly another bad day for Shaftesbury as Badshot Lea returned to base with a 4-0 0 victory to their name.

THE LAST WORD BY MATT BADCOCK - EDITOR AT THE NON LEAGUE PAPER If you’re reading this, then it’s good news – you’re reading a football programme, an increasingly endangered species. Like many things post-coved and in this ‘new normal’ there are lots of things different at our NonLeague grounds now. The National League have given their clubs the option of not running programmes this year and we’ve seen similar in the EFL. In this digital world an increasing number of clubs are looking at those avenues rather than the printed page. Everyone will have their views on this traditional aspect of football match going. But here we are, in a programme, talking about competitive NonLeague football. Hopefully that is as good to read as it is good to write. For many months now we’ve not had much competitive football to write about in The NLP. Yes, we had some play-off games, but the return this month of competitive football starting with the FA Cup has been most welcome. Of course, everything around the game is different. We’re all getting used to the added things we have to do. Book a ticket online beforehand, fill out a test and trace form, sanitise our hands as we enter the ground, follow oneway systems. 70

It’s very different to what we left in March when the 2019-20 20 season stopped in its tracks. Players are turning up in kit, staying out at half-time time for team talks – the current weather helps – and sitting sit apart on the bench. But, when the whistle goes, it’s back to the football we’ve all missed so much. Crowds being allowed back in stadiums was a massive breakthrough. Hopefully Steps 2 and above will soon follow because all clubs need that money coming through the gate. From a reporter’s point of view, we’ve never covered such a fluid situation. Things changed literally by the hour. Sometimes even within ten minutes of being told one thing, another call would come through saying it was now something else. e It’s been a challenge! Without crowds it would have been impossible to start the season. Then the fears for clubs as soon as the pandemic broke out would have been multiplied. I remember one week, way back in the summer, being told four different opinions opin on the start date for 2020-21. 2020 One said September/October, another ventured November, someone else thought January and another, informed person, feared not at all! Already we’re getting used to clubs withdrawing from the FA Cup at the last minute because of positive tests and there will no doubt be late cancellations of games throughout the season. We can all play our part. Help clubs stick to the crucial social distancing rules that need to be adhered to. Fill out test and trace forms and throw a couple of extra quid into the coffers. Every little helps, including ncluding reading this programme. Enjoy your football!
