JAMIE COLEMAN Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s massive game against Totton & Eling in the Wessex League 1. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Totton & Eling manager Steve Blackburn, his staff, players plus the committee and fans, who have made the journey to Andover tonight. The Millers have not had the best of starts to the season but they will look to cause us problems tonight and were unlucky recently when they lost 4-2 to neighbours Andover Town. Tonight’s game promises to be an exciting match and from my viewpoint, the lads have will want to build on the recent performances against Downton, Andover Town and Romsey Town. Since the turn of the month our results have gone all our way, we ended October with a bad defeat on the road to Laverstock but since then we’ve not lost in the league. November has been a really busy schedule, playing Saturday/Tuesday all the way through and we’ve picked up all 3 points beating Downton, Romsey and Ringwood who in turn are all good sides. We then played in the Russell Cotes cup where I pulled 8 first team players to give them a rest. It was a good chance to play players who haven’t picked up as many minutes as they’d hoped and pull some reserves in also. We lost 1-0 but on another day could have been 7 or 8 -1.

It was good practice all round, players needing minutes got them and players needing a rest got it. Focusing onto tonight’s big game, we need to put the loss to Hamworthy behind us. We need to keep playing with the high intensity that we showed on Saturday against a very good side that I think will get promoted to the Southern League. That shows how well we played against them as they tried to slow the game down and were playing for time from the start of the second half. Can I thank you all for your support on Saturday I thought you were magnificent and gave us such a lift when we needed it most. Please continue that level of support tonight, believe me it does make a difference to the players and hopefully we can take three points this evening to get us back up into the play-off positions and start to put pressure on the teams above us. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for our 5th home game in the space of 2 weeks. Welcome to our friends from Totton & Eling, who will hopefully make it a cracking atmosphere tonight under the Foxcotte floodlights. It’s been a very hectic couple of weeks but it’s also been an enjoyable one! The game against Downton wasn’t the greatest of performances but we did enough to earn the three points. No one will remember the performances if we get promoted this season. We will just remember the points we picked up and it’s the sign of a good side if we can pick up 3 points when we are not playing well.

6

The same could be said for the Ringwood game a couple of weeks ago. The pitch was in perfect condition but the weather wasn’t the greatest with a blustery wind but we got off to a great start through Shane Lock’s superb strike. Unfortunately, we couldn’t add that second goal that would have made the game safe but we did restrict Ringwood to long range chances, which Paddy had no problems with. It was pleasing to keep back-to-back clean sheets especially when you consider that Ringwood had recently taken 3 points of Bemerton and also scored 5 times past them. The league is still close with no team running away with it following Bemerton’s recent blip of two defeats in their last 2 matches. It shows that anyone can beat anyone on the day or evening and that no side can take the opposition for granted.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s game with Totton & Eling as we get back to league business following our defeat on Saturday to Hamworthy United in the FA Vase.

“WE CERTAINLY NEED TO PUT THAT RESULT BEHIND US AND CONCENTRATE ON THE LEAGUE; WE HAVE BEATEN DOWNTON, RINGWOOD AND ALSO A COMPREHENSIVE WIN OVER RIVALS ANDOVER TOWN.”

We knew Hamworthy would make it tough for us and they kept the ball really well, especially when they took an early lead. It took us most of the first half to get going and when we finally did we took our opportunity to score through Cookies penalty Having got back into the game and looking to get to half-time all-square, it was really disappointing to concede in the fashion that we did just before the break. We played really well in the second half and you could see that they were worried as they tried to manage the game by taking their time over goal kicks and throw ins.. We were well on the front foot and got a couple of chances that we just couldn’t convert and although it was disappointing to lose, we can take pride knowing that we have gone further in the Vase than any other New Street side.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

We certainly need to put that result behind us and concentrate on the league, we have beaten Downton, Ringwood and also a comprehensive win over rivals Andover Town, so we need to draw on all the positives from the last few games and start to get another run of wins together starting with this evening.

Totton will of course have other ideas and will be looking to earn the three points themselves and won’t won make it easy for us as their recent performances against higher league sides shows they can cause teams problems, so we will need to be at our best tonight. We need to continue to work hard and that’s something I hope is evident to everyone watching. We have some important games coming up that could really shape s our season. Please get behind us again this evening, your vocal support can make a difference tonight. to Most importantly, enjoy njoy the game and stay safe.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT WEEK WHEN THEY MAKE THE TRIP SOUTH TO PLAY VERWOOD TOWN AT POTTERNE PARK

VERWOOD TOWN WHO? Verwood Town, aka the

Potters, from Potterne Park, are the Street’s opponents on the 27th November. Adie Arnold’s side drew 2-2 against Laverstock and Ford last Tuesday night and currently lie in 6th place in League 1, one place and level on points with Street but have played 3 games more. .HOW THEY DOING? After a great start with victories over Fleet Spurs (5-0) and Whitchurch United (4-1), they then suffered back-to-back defeats to New Milton Town and Folland Sports, The Town then won 3-0 at Infinity, but the Town’s league form has been inconsistent so far this season. That inconsistency is shown in the following weeks as they lost 2-0 away at Fawley AFC in the Wessex League Cup and then 5-4 at home to Newport IOW. Recent results include, a 2-2 against Andover Town, followed by a 3-1 reverse at home to Ringwood before a victory on the island and a 6-0 demolition of Millbrook last Saturday. WHERE? The Street make their first trip to Long Lane in two years. The Street faithful have an 82-mile round-trip to get there and back. It is pay on the day for Street fans and details can be found on the opposite page. There is seating in the main stand near the halfway line next to the dugouts. The Potter’s home record this season currently stands with 5 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats in their nine matches at home, scoring 24 goals but conceding 19.

welcome TOTTON & ELING

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Totton & Eling Football Club to Foxcotte Park this evening. The Millers make the journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time since their 3-1 defeat here in September last year. The Street winning thanks to goals from Brett Denham (2) and Michael Davis. Totton & Eling did get a late consolation through a Matt Scott own goal. This afternoon’s match promises to be a an entertaining game with Totton & Eling coming into the game in 17th position on 13 points from their 18 games played and are currently looking over their shoulders with bottom club Fleet Spurs now 3 points behind and with 3 games in hand. The Millers got off to the perfect start with a 3-2 home win over Petersfield Town, thanks to a brace from Brandon Jewell and Harry Edmundson also scoring. Heavy defeats at Folland Sports and at home to Newport IOW came next before a 1-1 draw with Whitchurch United came through an Alex Sawyer goal. Further defeats came in the Hampshire Senior Cup to Alton, Wessex League Cup to New Milton and FA Vase with a 4-0 loss at Moneyfields.

To find out more about Totton & Eling visit: www.totton-elingfc.co.uk

A disappointing 1-1 1 draw with Fleet Spurs was followed with an even more disappointing 41 away defeat at Infinity. The run of defeats was halted with a 3-2 2 win at home to New Ne Milton Town before further defeats at Verwood Town and Downton and a 6-0 0 home loss to leaders Bemerton Heath Harlequins. Harlequins A 5-1 1 home win over Infinity with Alex Sawyer getting 4 goals and Ben Roles also netting with Andrew Powell getting Infinity nfinity’s consolation. A 2-2 2 draw with Fawley was next with Sawyer gain on target along with Yusupha Badje. Dylan knight got both of Fawley’s Fawley goals to earn a point for the Oilers. A 1-1 1 draw with East Cowes Victoria started November – Sawyer again ain scoring for the Millers before 4 straight defeats following a 2-0 2 defeat at Ash United, a 4-2 2 defeat at home to Andover Town – in a game that the Millers were leading until late on and then saw Town score two goals in injury time to steal the points. points Eversley & California proved too strong in the Russell Cotes Cup and East Cowes Victoria took the 3 points on Saturday with a 4-1 4 win at Beatrice Avenue. The Millers will no doubt be looking to get 3 points this evening to help move them up the table.

bluffers guide Totton & Eling FC... THE CLUB The Club was formed in 1925 as Bramtoco FC from the workforce of the British American Tobacco Company and changed its name to BAT Sports in 1971, the same year as they entered the Hampshire League. They progressed through the Leagues, winning Division Two in 1975 and being Champions of Division One in both 1988 and 1989. At that time the installation of floodlights, the construction of a small stand and a permanent fixed barrier enabled them to join the Wessex League. An additional stand and covered standing area followed in due course. Since joining the League they have twice reached the 3rd Round of the FA Vase, on the second occasion being drawn against AFC Wimbledon. With the weather causing the BAT ground to be unfit the tie was switched to South West London drawing an attendance of nearly 3000. Due to the imminent loss of their long serving Southern Gardens home they were forced to drop down a division at the end of the 2006-07 season and continued with their reserve side in Wessex League Division 2 at the end of that season and because of a restructuring in the leagues and still having their ground with a new one promised by Linden Homes they were put in Division 1 and changed their name to Totton and Eling Football Club. They worked hard in getting a side that would compete and were eventually rewarded in 2009 winning the 1st Division easily with over 100 points and goals regaining Wessex Premier Football again. The following year the club moved to the present ground at Miller Park at Little Testwood Farm which is adjacent to AFC Totton. They stayed in the Premier division until 2015 when, due to a lack of funds and a clubhouse and a real lack of people to help, the club got relegated to Division 1.

16

TOTTON & ELING – THE AREA Totton claimed to be the largest village in England until it was made a town in 1974. The town is often considered to be made up of several smaller villages, such as Testwood, Te Calmore and Hammonds Green (as well as the original village of Totton) which have been connected by new clusters of housing to form the town as it is today. This is backed up by the presence of several areas of local shops, which served their respective ctive villages in the past, and to an extent still do today. Until the 1967 forest perambulation fencing, New Forest ponies were free to roam its streets.

FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM ROMSEY Cricketers Arthur Trollope and Frederick Harold were born in Eling and fellow cricketers Stanley Pearce and Gerry Hill were born in Totton. Hill played for Hampshire from 1932 to 1954. A right-handed handed batsman and right-arm right off break bowler, Hill played ayed 371 first-class first games for Hampshire. Hill was spotted by the cricketer and writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle was playing golf with Hill's father when he spotted the young Hill playing on an adjoining pitch. Doyle then wrote to Colonel J. G. Greig, Hampshire's secretary, to arrange a trial.

STREET 4-2 ROMSEY TOWN SCOTT 11, LAWTON 46, JEFFERY 87. RUSHER 89

ODAM 56, MAGEE 78

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street left it late to claim the three points against a spirited Romsey side that had fought back from 2-0 down to level with 12 minutes to go, until substitute Josh Jeffery and Reece Rusher scored. There was a scrappy opening to proceedings with play mainly in midfield, though Romsey were a little fortunate when goalkeeper Jordi Valero dropped a corner under no real pressure and was rewarded with a free kick. On eleven minutes another corner produced a more positive outcome for the home side as Matt Scott rose above a crowded area to send his header high into the roof of the net. Street keeper Sean O’Brien tipped an Ollie Jenkins drive over the bar and Harry Lawton struch the cross bar late in the first half. A second New Street goal came straight into the second half as they made immediate and unchecked progress down the left side before Harry Lawton slid the ball past Valero and inside the far post. The twogoal cushion however lasted for little more than five minutes as the ball was given away in midfield and Jack Odam held off two challenges before beating O’Brien from a narrow angle. Romsey then produced three or four quick passes that took them in to the area, the ball broke loose and Liam Magee fired home from some fifteen yards to make it very much game on. Street came back with Lock hitting the bar and the game was in its final five minutes when they fashioned a carbon copy of their second goal. Again, the ball was worked down the left and this time substitute Josh Jeffery slotted the ball across Valero and inside the far post to restore Street’s lead. And Romsey conceded a fourth goal in stoppage time. Keeper Valero raced almost to the half way line to block Davis, unaware that the ball had gone loose for Reece Rusher to find the unguarded net from some thirty yards as Valero vainly tried to www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet return to his goal and it was game over in all respects.

STREET 1-2 HAMWORTHY UNITED COOK 21 (PEN)

FRANCIS 2, WILCOCK 44

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street bowed out of the FA Vase against a strong Hamworthy side , but made it an uncomfortable afternoon for the higher league visitors. Hamworthy took an early lead in the second minute when a free-kick was played into the Street area and was miscontrolled by the defence to allow Lee Francis to sweep the ball home from close range. Hamworthy looked to build quickly on their lead and Matt Neale slid the ball past the advancing O'Brien in the home goal but also past the post.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

The Street worked their way back in to the game and equalised on the twenty-minute mark. From a quickly taken free kick Max Allen found Shane Lock on the left, his cross struck the advancing defender on the arm and the referee pointed immediately to the spot. There was little in the way of argument and Ross Cook’s confidently taken kick bought the scores level. Cook was wide from the edge of the area and after another break down the left Beasley's fierce drive was beaten away by O'Brien. Then just before halftime Wilcock, who made ground on the left and deftly lifted the ball past the goalkeeper and high inside the far post from a narrow angle to give his side the advantage at the break. The home side pressed forward on the re-start and twice there was considerable confusion in the Hamworthy box but Street could not find the final touch with a corner being well held by goalkeeper Shane Murphy. The game became end to end but both sides could not find another goal so Hamworthy advance to next round, with Street far from disgraced and proud of their run this season in the Vase.

JEFFERY REFLECTS ON CUP VICTORY

Josh Jeffery came off the bench to make a difference in Streets recent wins against Downton and Andover Town in the North Hants Cup. Jeffery’s pace and ability to run at defenders has caught the eye in recent matches where he has come off the bench to make an impact during the latter stages of the game. This was capped with a spectacular strike against Andover Town last Tuesday and an important goal last Saturday against Romsey Town, just when Romsey looked to be back in the game after coming back to 2-2. The strike against Andover Town sealed a memorable victory against the local rivals from the Portway. The chance fell to Jeffery just outside the area, after the Town defence half cleared a Street corner and he proceeded to fire it into the net via the cross bar. The winger/striker was happy that he took his chance and hopes he has proven what he can do to manager Jamie Coleman. “The gaffer sent me on with a job to do and luckily I was in the right position at the right time,”.” said Jeffery. “The chance came straight to me and I was happy to get on the end of it and put it away, hopefully I can show the gaffer that I can do that week in, week out.” www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

The win against Romsey Town means the Street maintain their push for promotion and stay in 5th position with at least one or two games in hand with the teams above them. Jeffery believes that the Street have only just started to get going following their defeat at Laverstock & Ford. ”We We are just starting to get going and we are starting to pick k up momentum.” Jeffery told Word on the Street. “We had a slight blip against Laverstock but we are back on it now, we look good in possession and look capable of scoring all over pitch.” Jeffery admitted that he has been working harder in training and nd giving an extra 10 per cent to try and push his way into the side. The winger is happy that his hard work has paid off with his recent goals. “I’ve been working hard, I always give 100 per cent but sometimes you have to give 110 per cent,” said Jeffery. fery. “I’ve tried my hardest at every training session and it’s paid off with me getting on the pitch and making a telling contribution to the team and helping them progress in the cup and also getting the three points against Downton and also Romsey Town, especially my goal against Romsey as it made such a difference and swung the game back in our favour after they came back from 2-0 down to 2-2.”

YESTERDAY’S PAGES

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to an historic Street verses Totton & Eling clash at Foxcotte Park back in 2020 Andover New Street 3-1 Totton & Eling 26th September 2020 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2020/21 season with a 2-0 away victory over Newport IOW, thanks to a debut goal from Ally McCracken and Shane Lock securing the win in the second half. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 defeat at home against Peterasfield, with the unfortunate Scott KInge scoring an own goal late on. Cup defeats followed at Bashley and New Milton – on penalties 6-5, after a 0-0 stalemate over the 90 minutes despite dominating the game, the Street found it hard to put the ball in the back of the net. Totton & Eling were the next visitors to Foxcotte Park, who were also struggling after losing 1-0 to Cowes Sports in the FA Cup, they had also lost 2-0 at US Portsmouth and 2-1 at Andover Town. Also sandwiched between those two league results was a 6-1 cup defeat at Alton. The Street wanted to get off to a fast start but they had to wait until the start of the second half before the deadlock was broken. A deep Matt Scott free-kick on the touchline was met by the head of Alex Dockree, who headed back across goal for the unmarked Brett Denham to head home from close range. The relief for the striker to finally get off the mark was clear from the celebrations on the bench, with manager Danny Dolan and assistant Jamie Coleman rushing to meet their ecstatic striker.

Street then used all three subs in the next 5 minutes with Dockree, Urry and Max Allen being replaced by Scott Kinge, Michael Davis and Ally McCracken. It would be Davis to mark his debut with a spectacular third with a neat one-two one with Denham, before he found the top corner from the edge of the D. To their credit, Totton & Eling never gave up and got their reward with a consolation conso goal when a quick throw in deep in the Street half resulted in a cross being diverted into the near post past keeper O’Brien Brien by captain Matt Scott for an own goal. O’Brien Brien was then sent off when he brought down a Totton player outside his area and with Scott KInge taking over between the sticks to see the game out and ensure the 3 points.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS Portland United boss Franklyn Clarke has revealed his squad was invited to set their own targets for this season in the build-up to hosting Hamble Club.

Roach seals Royales Move

In their midweek de-brief after the 6-0 defeat at leaders Horndean, Portland’s players set targets that were “in line” with Clarke and assistant Sam Poole’s lofty aims of their own. With Portland singing off the same hymn sheet, the Blues now turn their attentions to 16th-placed Hamble, who lie one spot and five points above the islanders in the Wessex League Premier Division. Clarke said: “We asked them to lead in terms of what they want from the season and where do we want to finish. “We asked them to set their own targets and where they’ve said they want to finish is in line with what me and Sam want. “In order to do that we need to be winning games like (tomorrow) coming, especially at home. “Our home form’s good, so we’ll be looking to continue that.”He added: “We feel we’ve covered all bases going into Hamble. They’re just ahead of us in the league so we’re looking to close that gap.” Skipper Ryan McKechnie (knee) is estimated to be two weeks away from full fitness and fellow midfielder Josh Williams serves a one-game suspension. Goalkeeper Mike Edgar misses out, so new signing Brad Smith could deputise between the sticks. Fellow new recruit Liam Sayers could also feature after scoring a hat-trick for the reserves last time out.

36

Folland Sports striker Clayd Roach has signed for Wessex Premier AFC Portchester. The Pacey Striker/Winger is current top scorer in the Wessex League 1 and will bring plenty of goals to the Portchester attack, scoring 16 in 9 starts this season! The Planemakers, who currently sit in second place in the league are surely to miss Roach’s goals as he nearly has scored half the sides total goals this season – 39. Roach’s last appearance for Folland Sports was back in mid September, when he was substituted during the 41 defeat at Bemerton Heath Harlequins

ROUND-UP Tabletoppers Horndean facing 'biggest game of the season so far' at lowly Amesbury

Manager Glenn Turnbull admits Moneyfields' FA Vase celebrations unlikely to be forgotten as they prepare for second AFC Portchester Dover Road meeting this season

Horndean boss Michael Birmingham takes his Wessex League Premier Division table-toppers to second-bottom Amesbury on Saturday claiming: It's the biggest game of our season so far.

Moneyfields manager Glenn Turnbull fears his side's FA Vase celebrations could provide Wessex Premier Division rivals AFC Portchester an added incentive to claim victory when the two teams meet for the second time this season at Dover Road on Saturday.

The Deans responded to just a second defeat of the season at Hamble by returning to winning ways with a thumping 6-0 home win over Portland last weekend. But Birmingham does want his players to rest on their laurels as they resumed normal service this season with a crushing success against the Dorset-based side. The Horndean boss admitted the manner in which his side went down at Hamble was 'unacceptable'. And he will be warning his squad not to start thinking they're in for an easy ride at second-bottom Amesbury or moving forward for the remainder of the season.

www.ansfc.co.uk

Turnbull recalls his troops 'celebrating well' after that victory as Moneyfields made it into the first round proper of the national competition. But with former Moneys manager Dave Carter bringing his Portchester side back to Dover Road for a league encounter this weekend, Turnbull insists that Vase defeat and the scenes after are likely to stick in their opponents' minds. The Moneyfields boss said: ‘As I say, they’ll (Portchester) be coming in looking for it, they’re on a bit of a roll, they’ve got points to prove. We celebrated well after the Vase win so I’m sure they’ll have that in their memory banks and will want to put that right. Ninth-placed Portchester travel to Moneys sitting three points and four places above Turnbull's men in the Wessex Premier table, although they have played four matches more. But the Moneyfields boss is wary of the challenge his side will face against a 'flying' Portchester side, who are on the back of successive wins having netted 10 times without conceding in their previous outings at Christchurch and at home to Amesbury.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 CRAZIEST PREMIERSHIP GOALS.... 10 GARETH BALE –

8

TOTTENHAM v LIVERPOOL 2012

TOTTENHAM v WATFORD 2007

Probably one of the funniest goals ever scored. Bale scored for both Tottenham and Liverpool during this game, netting an own goal against his side by virtue of his face. Steven Gerrard took a shot on goal from Jonjo Shelvey's corner, only for it to be cleared by a Tottenham defender as far as Bale's face just a couple of feet from the net. It ricochets comically into the goal, as if straight from a pinball game. Poor Bale.

9

PETER ENCKLEMAN –

VILLA v BIRMINGHAM 2002

The fact that this goal should never really have stood just adds to its bizarreness – not to mention that it happened during a particularly fiery derby game between Aston Villa and Birmingham. Olof Mellberg's throw-in looked to have been routine, until it was horrendously misjudged by Villa goalkeeper Enckelmen. The ball grazed his boot slightly and he could only watch in horror as it dribbled into the net, piling onto Villa's woes that saw them ultimately lose the game 3-0.

PAUL ROBINSON –

To be fair, this goal came from a miscommunication between the Watford defenders. Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson took a massive free-kick from his own area that somehow bested England team-mate Ben Foster, taking an unfortunate bounce before finding itself in the net. Foster could do nothing about it, and could only watch on as his side went on to lose 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

7

MICHAIL ANTONIO –

WEST HAM v SOUTHAMPTON 2015

West Ham winger Antonio is not known as being the most gifted player the Premier League has ever seen. But his iconic strike against Southampton, scored through a combination of all four of his thrashing limbs, was a mess in anyone's book. Antonio starts by running into the Southampton box pretty confidently, before taking a tumble after tripping on his own feet. He nosedives straight into the ground, where he heads into a cluster of Southampton defenders, only for the ball to somehow ricochet off of the melee of players. It definitely gets a touch off of Antonio's head, which is on the ground, before bouncing into the net and past the goalkeeper. Antonio has absolutely no idea of what just happened, but celebrates accordingly.

6

JASON CUNDY –

TOTTENHAM v IPSWICH 1992

For someone known for his robust tackles, it was only fitting that Cundy's most famous goal came by way of an attempt at a challenge. In Cundy's effort to clear the ball, he took a tumble – and, with the help of the wind, the power of his kick and a whole lot of luck, saw his attempt fly over Ipswich goalkeeper Craig Forrest and straight into the net.

38

5

DION DUBLIN

3

STAN COLLYMORE –

COVENTRY v NEWCASTLE 1997

LIVERPOOL v BLACKBURN 1996

4

2

Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given made sure to look to his left and right after picking up a ball from a high cross when taking on Coventry City, but crucially not behind him where a lone Dublin was lurking. Given placed the ball in front of him for a goal-kick but was unaware of the lurking England striker, who managed to scoop the ball from under the goalkeeper's eyes and net it smoothly into the Newcastle goal.

TIM HOWARD –

EVERTON v BOLTON 2012

Goalkeepers providing assists is one thing, but goalkeepers scoring goals is another. Adam Bogdan would be forgiven for blaming the wind when he conceded a rather spectacular effort from opposition goalkeeper Tim Howard back in 2012. Sylvan Distin's back pass made Everton's Howard make a rushed clearance, forcing him to sky the ball, which ultimately catches the wind, beating the outfield Bolton players and bouncing just outside of the box before landing in Bogdan's net. Howard, to his credit, felt bad for the goal, stating after the game: "For our goal I was disappointed from a goalkeepers' union standpoint. You never want to see that happen. It's not nice, it's embarrassing, so I felt for Adam but you have to move on from it."

Newer Premier League fans will not be able to appreciate the quality of modern football pitches compared to those back in the day, which roughly resembled a Sunday League pitch. Against Blackburn, Liverpool forward Collymore fired the ball from inside the Blackburn half and shot towards goal, though it did not look to be the cleanest of strikes. It seemed to be an easy job for England international Tim Flowers to take care of – he even has his handss ready and outstretched – but thanks to the torn-up up pitch, the ball took a cruel bounce on a rogue mound of dirt and flew high over his shoulder and to the net.

1 DARREN BENT – SUNDERLAND v LIVERPOOL 2009

Ah, the infamous beach ball incident goal. The cruel irony of this goal is that it was at the fault of a Liverpool fan who somehow thought it would be a funny idea to throw a beach ball onto the pitch of the Stadium of Light. Pepe Reina looked to have been comfortable saving Bent's shot, only for the forward's effort to be hit by the beach ball – eventually diverting the effort into goal. Referee Mike Jones allowed the goal to stand, giving Sunderland all three points against the Reds.

RETURN OF THE REPLAY By Sam Emery

The return of replays in the FA Cup showed its value to Non-League clubs this week. The FA made the decision to scrap replays last season in order to ease fixture congestion in light of an adjusted schedule due to the pandemic. Drawn ties went straight to extra time and then penalties, if needed, to avoid a midweek rematch. There were fears among lower-league clubs that the change could become permanent but The FA reintroduced replays for this season’s competition. They were made mandatory in all rounds of the qualifying competition and up to and including the fourth round proper. In 1991, penalties were introduced after the first replay to avoid a series of rematches. It was 50 years ago last weekend when it took Alvechurch and Oxford City 17 days and six games to reach a conclusion. Their five fourth round qualifying replays – 1-1, 1-1, 0-0, 0-0, 1-0 – after the initial tie finished 2-2 broke the previous record of nine hours, 40 minutes set in the 1924-25 season by Leyton and Ilford. The FA’s eventual rule change was welcomed. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, the benefit of replays were laid bare. Solihull Moors were picked for broadcast by ITV4 when they took on League One side Wigan Athletic in front of a sell-out crowd. Stockport County didn’t have a seat to spare either when over 10,000 packed into Edgeley Park on Wednesday night for their replay against Bolton Wanderers, with the BBC cameras in attendance. Each club also received a healthy FA broadcast fee of £32,500 to go along with their bumper admission revenue. Both nights promised to be memorable for new fans and old but the ties wouldn’t have happened had it not been for replays. There is, however, another way of looking at the dynamic replays can create. On their way to a third round clash with Tottenham Hotspur last season, Marine twice won on penalties.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

The first was in a second round qualifying tie at Runcorn Linnets before winning again on spot kicks at EFL side Colchester United in the first round proper. If Marine were to have played a replay against the League Two side, arguably, their FA Cup run might have ended sooner and Jose Mourinho and co. wouldn’t have stepped foot inside Rossett Park. Alternatively, St Albans City have benefitted three times from replays in their adventure to the second round proper this season. They beat eat Concord Rangers, Met Police and Corinthian-Casuals Casuals all on home soil after drawing in the away tie. Sometimes, though, replays will give the opportunity for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Josh Coulson, the Southend United centre-back, centre always joked ed he was glad he headed a good chance over the bar late on for Cambridge United against Manchester United in a huge FA Cup fourth round proper clash. The reason being was it meant the U’s ended up drawing 0-0 0 and would take on the likes of Wayne Rooney ey and Robin van Persie United in a replay at Old Trafford with 74,511 in attendance. With replays scrapped from the fifth round onwards, the top-flight flight clubs should be happy enough to let the lower-league league sides keep on having their big days in the famous fa cup.

league look Not a good day for our sides in the Vase today with only four of the eleven sides competing going through to the next round and two of those from allWessex ties. In the last two mentioned Andover New Street went down 2-1 at home to Premier Division Hamworthy United, a Ross Cook penalty equalising an early goal from Lee Francis before Max Wilcock scored the winner on the stroke of half time. Two high scoring sides, Bashley and Shaftesbury, shared four goals in the Forest before the hosts went through 6-5 on penalties. Liam Farrugia and Harry Bunce the Bash marksmen with Aidan Shepherd and Luke Delaney replying for the visitors. The two sides to progress at the expense of opposition from other Leagues were Brockenhurst and First Division New Milton. Brockenhurst defeated Hellenic League Brimscombe & Thrupp 4-1 thanks to two goals from Kieran O’Donnell and singles from Christie Ward and Mitch Speechley Price and all credit to New Milton who made the long journey to Cornwall and defeated Wendron United by six goals to three. Tyrrell Sampson led a fine team performance with a hat trick while Freddie Horlock, Joe Kimber and Charlie Turner added the other three. Bemerton Heath were defeated 4-1 at home by Clevedon Town from the Western League – Justin Bennett with the goal – and Christchurch exited at the hands of Wellington from the same League, going down 5-2 in Somerset, Finn Lowe and James King with the Church goals. The three remaining ties ended in high scoring defeats at the hands (or feet) of sides from the Combined Counties League, Blackfield & Langley lost 6-2 at Raynes Park Vale – Rafa Ramos and Sami Makhloufi with the two goals, while US Portsmouth went down 5-1 at Frimley Green, their consolation goal coming from Joe Johnson.

48

Lastly Fareham had the benefit of a home draw but it proved to no avail as Abbey Rangers ran out 5-3 winners at Cams Alders with Jack Breed (2) and Gary Austen the Creeksiders marksmen. Good to see that Bashley, Brockenhurst and Fareham had attendances in excess of 200 while New Street’s was only marginally below that figure. Newport moved two points clear in Division On with a 3-1 victory at Ringwood thanks to two goals from Joe Craig and one from Joe Hancott, the home goal scored by Callum Horton. Andover Town continued their impressive run of results with a 3-0 victory over Ash United at the Portway with Josh Bertie, Ben Emans and Waledin Ahmed on target while Laverstock & Ford are now seventh after defeating Infinity 6-1 at the Dell, Archie Lovegrove scored three, Tommy Campbell-Smith two with Graham Mankin making a rare appearance on the scoresheet to complete the six. Leon Lambert notched the Infinity goal as they remain in the bottom three. Verwood remain in the leading group after scoring three without reply at Whitchurch through Ed Fisher, Jake Kelly and Ollie Davis and Downton improved their position with a 3-1 home defeat of Romsey Town - Sam Howe with two and Shaun Prentice against one from Jack Odam - while East Cowes moved up the table courtesy of a 4-1 win over Totton & Eling at Beatrice Avenue. Four different scorers for Vics in Jimmi Burton, Charlie Marsek, Toby Snow and Jamie Wright while Alex Sawyer was the lone Totton marksman. Goals from James Clifton and Ben Bolton gave Fawley the points at Petersfield while Fleet Spurs scored perhaps their best win of the season to date in beating Millbrook 4-1 at Kennels Lane. Tom White notched a hat trick backed by a single strike from Steve Gibson but Millbrook, currently enduring a bad run, did not report their scorer. Lastly on the day Follands became the first side to reach the last four of our League Cup, a single goal from Will Gange giving them victory over Baffins Milton Rovers.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN Unless something dramatic happens, it does look as though football in Britain will soon welcome back terracing of some sort at the highest level of the game. For a generation of fans, terracing has never really been an option, unless they watched lower league or nonleague football. As an example, my youngest son, aged 26, seeing the swaying hordes behind the goals in a 1970s game on TV, couldn’t believe the authorities took such huge risks in cramming people on concrete steps with just a few barriers in place. We have, to our cost, learned. That’s not to say that standing at matches isn’t commonplace, for fans seem to reject their seats for the entire 90 minutes at some grounds, ignoring any appeal to sit down and threats of ejection. In most cases, the stewards have given up and allow it to continue. But this tells us there is a segment of the average football crowd that really does want to stand up. In theory, the reintroduction of standing on an official basis should reduce ticket prices, although it is unlikely to change much as there will be costs involved in recalibrating stadium seating plans. In the longer run, one can only hope clubs try and introduce a more acceptable pricing structure. This is important because the majority of people who will warm to the return of terraces will be the younger members of the footballing community. Like many fans, I graduated from

54

crumbling terraces and moved into the stands when I was no longer prepared to tolerate the hustle and bustle, and when I could cou afford the admission. Today, I might occasionally stand at my local club and I do enjoy the age-old age ritual of leaning against a rusting barrier, craning my neck here and there to catch a glimpse of the action. It’s clear the terracing is where the real rea fermentation of the football spirit takes place. You make more noise if you stand up and being seated makes people more reserved. If you want further proof of that, just consider a music gig where artists often encourage the crowd to get out of their seat. sea Will we feel comfortable using terracing again? With covid-19 19 in its post-vaccination post stage, how will we react to being shoulder-toshoulder shoulder with hundreds of people in a confined area? From the spectator’s point of view, what is more hygienic – sitting closely together or standing side-by-side? side There’s an argument there’s little difference, but at the same time, there’s a strong case to suggest that being on a terrace (not the sardine-like sardine experience that epitomised swaying crowds of the 1960s and earlyy 1970s) gives more scope for movement. In theory you can give yourself as much room as you want if the crowd capacity is kept to a modest level. In a seat, you have very little control, other than to get up and leave. I believe a carefully-controlled controlled terrace, ter in terms of numbers, could provide a solution for football spectating in the post-virus post climate. It won’t be to everyone’s taste – ultimately, it may not be to mine – but it would be sheer stupidity to restart football and not allow people the room to o breathe their own air
