JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for today’s important match against Verwood Town in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Potter’s including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Verwood Town that have made the journey to Foxcotte Park this afternoon and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on this evening. Our last home game saw us take on Ash United and once we got the opening goal from Reece Rusher early on, we never looked back. I was really pleased with the performance of the whole side and also for Josh Jeffery, who never stopped working and was rewarded with his fine hat-trick in the second half. It was a game in which we showed all the attributes necessary to win; great pass and move football and a resilience when needed. Your support also helped, with your noise, when we kept pushing towards the end, so thank you for that. That game saw us play without a recognised central striker, but the entire side put in a good shift and helped us continue our fine form at home.

“IT WAS A GAME IN WHICH WE SHOWED ALL THE ATTRIBUTES NECESSARY TO WIN: GREAT PASS AND MOVE FOOTBALL AND A RESILIENCE

WHEN NEEDED”

Tremendous I thought the performance from the whole team on Tuesday night was tremendous against Totton & Eling. An early goal blitz, where we scored three times in the first half sealed the win, and we added to the tally in the second half. To be honest, it should have been more with their keeper pulling off a couple of good saves to deny us and we were also unlucky with a couple of our efforts being blocked or just off target. It was also great to see the new signings we have been able to bring in settle in so well. With the newest addition Mike Gosney not only putting in a great performance but also getting on the scoresheet. The whole teams display epitomised the strong and committed performance by each and every player and that was the basis for a deserved result in some difficult conditions. It is vital we focus on today’s game and try and get the three points to add to what has been a very, very good run of form for us, as we look to continue to move up the table. I know that the Verwood Town players will be really up for this game, they will be looking for a response after their last league game, so we need everyone involved with Andover New Street to give the appropriate response, and to give it everything in our bid to keep the three points at Foxcotte Park.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Verwood Town, here today for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home. We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into a strong position for promotion with our hardfought victories over Ash United and Petersfield Town a few weeks ago – which I hope we can improve on today.

Standard To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Today’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Verwood Town will be looking to move back up the table but come

6

into the game on the back of a heavy defeat to fellow promotion challenger, Bemerton Heath Harlequins. We will of course need to be on our toes to ensure we can maintain our winning form.

Sponsors Today is also a special day as we welcome all our sponsors to the club. The club cannot operate and function without help from the sponsors, and we are extremely grateful to all the sponsors. With continued activity on and off the pitch at the moment putting the club in the local spotlight we have been inundated with companies interested in becoming sponsors, guests and partners of this fine football club. The current success of not only the first team but the Swifts and ladies’ sides is not only down to the players on the pitch but the financial support off it. If you’re interested in any sponsorship or would like to discuss any corporate partnerships with the Football Club please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We have come through a run of tough games, but we still have further difficult games ahead. Starting with today’s game and with the likes of Bemerton, Romsey, Newport (IOW) and Downton all to come in March. It makes for an exciting end to the season. We have finally moved up from 5th position into the top 3 and have a real opportunity to go up this season with a strong squad, that in my opinion, could finish in the top half of the Wessex Premier.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on Verwood Town in another important game as we continue our pursuit of promotion.

“WE’VE GOT OURSELVES INTO A GOOD POSITION – NOW IT’S UP TO US TO PUSH ON.”

After a great start on Tuesday night when we went 3-0 up inside the opening 45 minutes against Totton & Eling and to be fair we possibly could and should have had more. What was pleasing was to come away with a clean sheet and to finally move up the table into the top 3, only 5 points behind Bemerton with 2 games in hand that we know we need to obtain maximum points from. . Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week.

Given the run we’ve been on it will be easy to get carried away. After 1 defeat in the last 17 league games that is no surprise. However, we have a strong and hungry management team, coaching staff and dressing room that will ensure we will not get complacent. As I’ve said, it’s a long old season and a lot can change.

All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on. This afternoon we take on Verwood Town, who are currently in 10th place and will be looking to bounce back to winning ways, so we know that we will be in for a tough game this afternoon. In my experience these are the games that are the toughest. We’ve already seen how competitive this league is, with some memorable games across the league, let’s hope that today is another one of those occasions. Get behind us once again this afternoon. Enjoy the game.

We have made some important signings recently to improve what is already a strong squad with Jordi Wilson, Chris Flood, Joe Wright and Mike Gosney signing recently. And we have also signed a familiar face in Liam Hibberd a couple of weeks ago, with Hibbo coming on early in the second half in the game against Petersfield and starting on Tuesday night.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD IN A FEW WEEKS TIME WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO FACE ROMSEY TOWN AT THE AEC PROTECTION STADIUM

ROMSEY TOWN WHO? Romsey Town, aka the Town, from the AEC Protection Ground, are the Street’s opponents on the 12th of March. Totton lost 51 on Tuesday night against Winchester City in the Southampton Senior Cup, while the Town currently sit 8th place in the league with 50 points and are three points behind 7th place Downton. HOW THEY DOING? The Town got off to a poor start to the season, with three defeats against Newport (IOW), Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Folland Sports before a winning run of 4 matches for the Town, which started with a 3-2 home win over Fawley. Further wins over Totton & Eling, Laverstock & Ford and Ringwood Town followed before a 3-1 defeat at Verwood ended September. October saw Town start with a 1-0 win over Whitchurch, before a 51 defeat over Andover Town. They bounced back with a 5-1 win over Ash United and then a 3-1 win over East Cowes. The month ended with Whitchurch gaining revenge for their defeat earlier in the month with a 2-0 victory. November started with 2 wins over Petersfield and New Milton Town. A run of 2 defeats came mid-month against the Street (4-2) and Downton (3-1). The Town ended November with a 3-0 home victory over Fleet Spurs. December only saw 3 matches played but the Town remained unbeaten with wins over Millbrook (6-1) and Ringwood Town (10) and an impressive 1-1 home draw with leaders Bemerton Heath. 2022 started off well

10

for the Town with three wins over Fleet Spurs, Verwood Town and Ash United. A 2-2 home draw with Newport (IOW) ended the month of January. This month has seen a 2-0 defeat to Folland Sports before a 3-1 win at East Cowes, Oliver Jenkins getting a brace and also Owen Holloway also on target. The Town’s last league match ended in a 3-1 home defeat to Downton.

HOW TO GET THERE? The AEC Protection

Stadium is 39 minutes or 21 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A3057 towards Stockbridge. Continue along the A3057 through Stockbridge and Kings Somborne and all the way to Romsey. At the turn left onto The Hundred/B3398. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Bypass Rd/A27/A3090. The ground is on the left.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

our last match at the AEC Protection Stadium came in August 2017 in the Wessex League One and saw the Street lose 4-2 thanks to goals from Tom Ashton, Luis Morais and a brace from Daniel Fox. This came after Zach Hine gave the Street the lead after 34 minutes and Zach Neve got a consolation in the 70th minute. Since that defeat the Street won the return game in December 2017 with a 3-2 score line. The two sides then met in the FA Cup the following season, the Street triumphing 4-0. The two sides then met in the league in November 2019 with Street winning 5-1 but the season ended early before the return game could be played. Romsey then recorded a 2-0 win here in November 2020.

bluffers guide Verwood Town FC... THE CLUB Originally believing the club to be formed in the 1920’s , Verwood now have information to show that it was formed earlier than this in 1905 and affiliated to the Dorset County FA that same year. Despite the early on-field results, the club flourished and after an initial move to the recreation ground, continued to play home games there until 1986 when it moved to Potterne Park According to long established club members and ex-players, traveling in and around Dorset by steam train and changing behind well layed hedge rows proved conducive to good team spirit and offered a different slant to country life. During the war years matches were organised against army teams. An ambitious move to Potterne Park in 1986 and a strong willing committee brought the club in 1989 to Hampshire League football. High league positions achieved and promotion to Hampshire League Division One in 1993. It was during this period that with the growth of the village into a town with a new name Verwood Town Football Club was established. In 2004/5 the Wessex League amalgamated with the Hampshire League and formed three new leagues. Verwood Town joined the new Sydenhams Wessex League Division Three. Two seasons later a third, place finish and promotion to the newly renamed Sydenhams League (Wessex) Division One. Progress continued apace with erection of floodlights, spectator facilities and entries into the FA Vase and later the FA Cup. In 2011/12 promotion to the Sydenhams League Premier Division was achieved. Consolidation with a solid 14th position finish was followed in ensuing To find out more about Verwood Town visit: www.vtfc.co.uk

seasons largely safe from relegation. Three management changes from 2014 resulted in the First Team entering a more unsettled period which culminated in relegation and a drop to Division 1 for the start of 2017/18 season. The club remains committed to grow however and push forward both on and off the pitch. In 2015 the Verwood Town Ladies Team was established participating in the Dorset Women's league, and together with the greater integration across youth and adult football we are now developing plans for improved facilities with our hope and wish to continue the development of football for all in the area. VERWOOD – THE AREA Verwood is a town and civil parish in eastern Dorset, England. The town lies 10 miles (16 km) north of Bournemouth and 13 miles (21 km) north east of Poole as the crow flies. The civil parish comprises the town of Verwood together with the extended village of Three Legged Cross, and has a population of 15,170 according to latest figures (2014) from Dorset County Council. FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM VERWOOD Michael Giles – original drummer for King Crimson, had a home studio, Gordon Haskell – pop music vocalist, songwriter and bassist, Eddie Howe – AFC Bournemouth former manager and former player, Lionel Jeffries – actor, writer and director, Darren Kenny – Paralympic cyclist, Jessie Matthews – actress, singer and dancer and Buster Merryfield – actor. PETERSFIELD T 1-3 STREET AKOMAN-EHIKPA 66

PEARSON 15, LOCK 19, 21

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street made it three wins and nine points in eight days and completed the double over Petersfield but were made to work hard for their win by a committed home side in a game that was virtually decided by a fiveminute spell in the first half. Both goalkeepers were quickly involved with home custodian Tim Jackson having to leave his area to clear a through ball and Jordi Wilson at the other end claiming a high free kick in a crowded six-yard box.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Street slowly made their way into the game and the sixteenth minute was the prelude to a five-minute spell that in the end decided the destination of the points. Joe Wright’s quickly taken free kick found Mikey Davis on the left and his low cross was turned in by Adam Pearson at the far post, the tall defender having gone up largely to add his height to the attack. Two minutes on and the advantage was doubled as neat control by Chris Flood gave Shane Lock a shooting chance and though the first effort was blocked, he swept the loose ball past Jackson. The clock had yet to reach the halfway mark when Josh Jeffery won a corner – it was inches away from being an own goal the kick caused a scramble in the home sixyard box that was ended by Shane Lock forcing the ball over the line for his second to give his side a three-goal lead. The game was becoming scrappy, and the home side missed a chance when there were three passes inside the area before the ball was cleared when all three were shooting opportunities. At the midway point of the half Petersfield reduced the deficit. A long free kick was headed back across goal from the far post and Akoman forced the ball over the line. Jackson then saved at Flood’s feet but generally it was the home side going forward with a volley from Jake Burton almost shaving the crossbar. But the Street held on to secure the three points and move up to fourth.

TOTTON & ELING 0-5 STREET COOK 17, LOCK 24

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street moved in to third place in the table, with a comfortable, almost routine win over Totton and Eling at Millers Park, completing the double over the home side and taking their total of goals scored in the last four League matches to twenty-two. Street showed their intentions straight from the first whistle with a close-range Chris Flood effort from a Harry Lawton cross saved by keeper Ciaran Hinds and new signing Mike Gosney having a shot cleared off the line. A neat home move was halted by goalkeeper Jordi Wilson saving at Traore’s feet before Gosney just failed to make sufficient contact with a Flood cross at the other end. The pressure was eventually rewarded in the twelfth minute when a Gosney corner from the right was bundled over the line by Harry Lawton despite the close attentions of a home defender. New Street were dominating possession, while having to be wary of Traore’s pace on the break, and after Flood had been crowded out by weight of numbers, they doubled their lead just before the half hour.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Gosney switched to the right flank and pulled the ball back from the by line for Shane Lock to react the quickest and turn the ball past Hinds. The home side escaped when a Flood header from a Joe Wright cross smacked against the underside of the bar, bounced down on the line and into the hands of the grateful goalkeeper, but the visitors were not to be denied and added a third on the stroke of half time. Gosney found space on the left and his low hard driven cross came off a defender’s foot on to his arm, and whilst there was no intention to handle the ball, under the present illogical rules it was a penalty and Chris Flood made no mistake from the spot. If three nil at the break suggested game over it was surely confirmed within sixty seconds of the re-start when Street added goal number four, Lock cleverly turning the ball in to Mike Gosney’s path and the finish past the advancing goalkeeper was cool and clinical. The home side responded with a break down the right and a chance, with a cross that was rather scuffed into Wilson’s arms by Dominey from close range. Lock had a shot well saved and the hard-working Mikey Davis was too high after being found by Lawson before Flood suffered a similar fate. Midway through the half it was five as a move involving four or five players ended with Shane Lock collecting his second and the side’s fifth goal, turning Davis’s cross past the overworked Hinds. The scorer then gave way to Ross Cook who immediately was foiled by the goalkeeper’s legs and Wilson had confidently dealt with a dangerous cross. Late on Cook had a free www.ansfc.co.uk facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet kick that was pushed round the post by Hi d

CLASSIC CLASH EXTRA

11.12.2021 | ANDOVER NEW STREET 3-1 VERWOOD TOWN (MATCH ABANDONED H/T) WESSEX LEAGUE ONE Shane Lock is pictured after Harry Lawton had put the Street 2-1 up against Verwood Town in our abandoned fixture in December last year.

However, during the first half one of the floodlights had failed and despite the club’s best efforts, could not get it working again .

Lawton would also score a second goal just before half-time to give the Street a 3-1 lead, after Verwood had taken an early lead.

This would result in the referee abandoning the game and hence today’s re-arranged fixture.

YESTERDAY’S PAGES

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to an historic Street verses Verwood Town clash at Foxcotte Park back in 2017 20 Andover New Street 2-0 Verwood Town 19th August 2017 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Verwood were the next visitors to Foxcotte Park . Kicking up the slope was not the only initial struggle New Street faced as 10 players were absent for various reasons in the league fixture. Michael Horne, Aaron Jefferies, Allan Ralph, Michael Richmond, and Charlie Rogers all played their first games of the season. Verwood Town were straight out of the blocks from the start and put early pressure on debutant Horne’s goal. The first real chance fell to their captain Russel Dyer who blazed over from just inside the box. A flurry of corners from the away resulted in a goal line clearance from Aaron Jefferies and a fine save from Horne. With Verwood not taking their opportunity to take the lead it was Street who would capitalise. An initial shot from Captain, Casson Spencer, saw Will Dennis make a good save but give the home side a corner. A tremendous cross from Zac Hine and great work from Turpin, creating space for team mates, meant that Crisp met

the ball with a towering header which flew into the net with just 11 minutes on the clock. The best chance in the later stages of the first half fell to Spencer. With just Dennis to beat, the New Street forward seemed to get the ball stuck in his feet and the final strike didn’t possess enough power to trouble Verwood’s keeper. Horne was still busy for Street and kept Joe Meyer at bay with a good save at his feet. With just a minute showing from the restart, Turpin made a great run and was found by a long ball from Pollard. From 20 yards Turpin struck the ball wonderfully and the ball powered its was past Dennis and into the bottom corner for the prolific Journeyman’s first goal of the season. Hine was next to go close as he cut in for the right hand side but his finish didn’t match his trickery. There was one last strike in the match through Spencer, who cut in from the left flank and let fly from 30 yards. The ball zoomed past the far post and kept the score 2 nil.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS The season targets Wessex League Premier title-chasers Horndean are pushing to achieve in final run-in Horndean boss Michael Birmingham revealed his squad are still chasing achieving two in-house season targets in their final nine Wessex League Premier Division fixtures. The Deans currently sit second in the table and remain in title contention, although leaders Hamworthy are a point ahead of them with two games in hand. Birmingham told how his side have long surpassed the first of three season targets by reaching the 35-point mark to ensure Wessex Premier 'safety'. Now sitting on 67 points from 31 league fixtures so far, they have been pushing for two more campaign aims for a sustained period. But Birmingham revealed they are 'not quite there yet' in terms of ensuring his second season aim is reached, while the Deans boss stressed his squad are 'nowhere near' securing his third and final target set out at the start of the season - but remained tight-lipped on the exact details of either of those ambitions. ‘ We made three targets (for the season), the first target was to hit 35 points to stay up - we hit that - second target we’re not quite there yet, the third target we’re nowhere near there yet. When we hit the second and third target I’ll know how we’ve done as a season,; revealed Birmingham. Horndean are preparing to head to second-bottom Hythe & Dibden this weekend with both leading scorer Connor Duffin and 11-goal striker Harry Jackson available again after serving suspensions. Dual-signed Chichester City forward Callum Overton will not be involved this weekend having featured in last weekend's win over Baffins Milton Rovers. But Karol Skoczen is in contention again after netting on his Horndean debut last time out after arriving from Alton. Birmingham added: ‘Terry (Cox) has come back in charge (at Hythe), and he’s got them going again. They had a great result at Moneyfields a few weeks ago, 3-1 beating them in their own backyard, so they can’t be taken lightly. They’re going to be a tough team to break down.’

36

ALSO... Baffins Milton Rover’s boss Shaun Wilkinson admitted his side are a ‘soft touch’ at the moment after their dismal Wessex League Premier Division run was extended. Three weeks after being seven minutes away from taking over top spot, Rovers slumped to a 3-2 home loss to AFC Stoneham last night. That was their fifth defeat in six league games, and they have now taken just five points from a possible 24. They trail leaders Hamworthy by nine points, having played two games more, and are eight behind second-placed Horndean having played the same number of matches.

ROUND-UP Hammers land home tie in last eight of the FA Vase

Newport FC announce start of new stadium work this week

Hamworthy United are poised to welcome another bumper home crowd to the County Ground as they get set to face Southall in the quarterfinals of the FA Vase.

Preliminary work at the site of the new Newport Football Club ground at the Racecourse is to begin this week.

A hat-trick from Bailey Rowe sent Tim Sills’s side through to the last eight of the national competition on Saturday, as they sealed a 31 victory over Tunbridge Wells. And Hammers will be at home once again in the next round, as they were drawn against Combined Counties League Premier North outfit Southall.

Newport FC chairman, Pete Westhorpe, said: “There are one or two issues that need to be agreed with the Isle of Wight Council before the main work on the new stadium can begin, but I know supporters will be encouraged to see this preliminary work get underway.”

Sixth in their respective division, Southall have come through their past two Vase ties on penalties. They beat Clevedon 5-4 from the spot after a 1-1 draw in round four, before holding their nerve to overcome Stansfeld 4-2 on penalties on Saturday, following a goalless stalemate. Their next clash in the competition is set to take place on Saturday, March 12. Should Sills’s side be victorious, they would scoop £4,125 in prize money, as well as then be just one step away from a Wembley final. www.ansfc.co.uk

The main part of the works will be the creation of a visibility splay from the proposed access to the Racecourse, by cutting back the hedgerow. New hedgerow planting will be undertaken to compensate for this, with the works supervised by an ecological consultant, with the approval of the Isle of Wight Council.

The club is currently ground sharing with Ryde Saints at Smallbrook, Ryde, while the new stadium is constructed. Part of that ground-share agreement requires new floodlights at Smallbrook to be provided.

Peter added: “I am pleased to say we are moving forward on this issue too and I expect there to be some tangible developments in the very near future.” If remaining issues with the council are overcome, the hope is that work can commence on the new Racecourse stadium — to include an all-weather pitch, l bh d l ki g i M db l t d i th t

COMMUNITIES RALLY TOGETHER!

By Sam Emery

Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin may have proved profitable for, say, fencers or roofers but certainly not for cash-strapped Non-League football clubs.

Last Friday, Storm Eunice blew the stand down again along with the club’s TV tower. It is estimated that repairs this time round could cost the club around £20,000.

Five full days of heavy rain, high winds and even snow left Britain battered and bruised last week with a trial of destruction in its wake. Naturally, the fixture list was decimated up and down the country, while some clubs were left counting the cost of extensive damage caused to grounds and clubhouses.

Basford United’s Greenwich Avenue stadium suffered extensive wind damage last Friday, leaving them with an estimated repair bill of £10,000. Stands and turnstiles were damaged, with one roof destroyed, while exterior fences came down and gas, electricity and water supplies were disrupted.

Perhaps the hardest hit, once again, were Tadcaster Albion. For the fourth time in seven years, the adjacent River Wharfe burst its banks with such ferocity that it took down most of the steel barrier on the far side of the Brewers’ Ings Lane ground, opening the floodgates for around 1.5 metres of water.

Perhaps the most harrowing sight of the weekend was the metal roof of the stand at Pagham FC being wrapped around a parked van in a nearby road with the entire structure ripped from its hinges.

This comes as a huge kick in the teeth for the North Yorkshire club who have played an integral part in the town’s Tadcaster Flood Alleviation Scheme which was formed following the devastation of the floods in 2015. The clubhouse at Ings Lane was raised to prevent a repeat and that seemed to do the trick when floods struck again in 2020 and 2021. Not this time though with water ingress expected through the floorboards. As a result, Taddy are now back in limbo with the Environment Agency yet to sanction vital repair works before their next home game against Stocksbridge Park Steels on March 5. Another club who suffered a repeat deluge were Barton Rovers, who were hit by the effects of a major storm for the second time in five years. In February 2017, the Southern League Division One Central side’s Sharpenhoe Road home was battered by Storm Doris which sent a floodlight pylon crashing through the main stand, leaving Barton with a £9,000 repair bill.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Trees at Egham Town’s Runnymede Stadium were felled, and a stand destroyed, causing the postponement of their home game against Southall, while the away team’s dugout at Hartley Wintney flipped over the pitch side hoardings and onto its roof as their Green Lane ground was also hit. Meanwhile, Potters Bar Town have set up a GoFundMe page in order to help the club meet ground grading regulations, following extensive storm damage. A similar fundraising effort in March 2019 raised £5,000 towards the £50,000 improvement costs as the club just about made the deadline to maintain their Step 3 status. But 70pmh winds on Friday blew one of the new stands completely on its back, causing much damage, as well as to the Water Irrigation Canons, the Home Dugout and a Storage Unit. In times like this, communities are at their strongest, rallying together in support of a vital asset. It shows nothing should ever be taken for granted.

league look The Buildbase FA Vase has to lead the way today with many congratulations to Hamworthy United and equal commiserations to Brockenhurst who went out by the cruellest way possible, the penalty shootout. A crowd of 661 packed into the County Ground to see Hamworthy United beat Southern Counties East side Tunbridge Wells by three goals to one with Bailey Rowe the individual hero with all three goals, while the visitors’ response came deep into second half stoppage time. Brockenhurst travelled to Southern Combination League leaders Littlehampton Town, coming back from 1-0 and then 3-1 down to take the tie to penalties. The Badgers goals came from Silvano Obeng and Christie Ward while the equaliser was scored by Alex Haynes in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time and all this after Shane Murphy saved a penalty in normal time. However, the penalty shootout went very much the Sussex side’s way with the final tally 4-1. And the attendance? A mere 1,276. The position at the top of Division One is every bit as tight as that in the Premier Division and changed little on the day with four of the top five clubs all winning. Bemerton Heath remain on top after comprehensively beating Verwood at Moon Park by 6-0 with Justin Bennett (2), Rudi Plummer, Eddie Perrett, Danny Young and Kane O’Keefe the six shooters. In the early kick off a lone goal from Jordan Browne gave Newport the points at Smallbrook against Fawley – a spirited performance by the visitors – while Follands matched Bemerton by scoring six at Ringwood Town though the visitors did notch a consolation through a Harry Smith penalty. The Follands goals were led by a hat trick for Will Gange with two from Jamie White and a single from Connor Rowe.

48

Andover Town were the only losers going down to a Russell Jones goal for Laverstock & Ford at the Portway with Andover New Street completing the top five with a hard earned 3-1 win at Petersfield. The Street goals – two from Shane Lock and one from Adam Pearson - all came in a five-minute spell midway through the first half with Aaron Akoman replying after the break. Romsey are going through something of a bad run and went down 3-1 at home to Downton with the visitors’ goals coming from Sam Howe with two and Callum Butler. John Cole with the home goal. Three welcome points for East Cowes Vics as they completed the double over Ash United with a best of three goals win at Beatrice Avenue. Sam Cant and Jimmi Burton for Vics and Jordan Devanney with the single strike for Ash. With Infinity’s resignation from the League,

New Milton were left without a game which just leaves the two matches involving the bottom two. Fleet Spurs fared much the better winning 2-1 at Millbrook thanks to goals from Tom White and Ryan Goddard – the Millbrook goal coming from Mark Barker, but Totton & Eling’s struggles continue after they were beaten 5-2 at Whitchurch. Ryan Long with two, Grant Powell, an own goal and Nathan Lynch – a long time since that name last appeared in these columns – for the Jamboys and a brace for Sam Ellis for the Millers. Spurs now have a three-point gap between themselves and their rivals at the bottom.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN Football, as we all know, is an international game that is also a global language, more effective than almost any other form of crosscultural communication. The world, generally, has got smaller and as the most popular sport on the planet, football has become something of an emollient, making relationships easier and business more fluid.

The consequence of globalisation is that we are all inter-connected, all part of the same problem, all part of the same solutions. No longer can we ignore what’s happening on the other side of the world because today, if a major economic hub sneezes, we don’t just catch a cold in Europe, the backside literally drops out of the economy. And when there’s a pandemic in China, the mobility of people makes it near impossible to control. Around 50 years ago, such a problem could arguably have been more easily contained. We have all benefitted from globalisation and our football has become more interesting as a result. Look at the Premier League and its multi-cultural teams. Furthermore, we can now take an interest in football around Europe and actually watch the games. Just as our food, lifestyles and entertainment have become more varied and cosmopolitan, so too has football and the way we consume it. So, it is somewhat mystifying when people started moaning about the inconvenience of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). If there is a complaint to be made, it is of the frequency of the AFCON (every two years), but this is one of the factors to consider when a club sign leading African players. For professionals from Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana and the rest of the continent, the AFCON is every bit as important as the European Championship is to players from France, Germany and Belgium. Because the standard isn’t as high, that doesn’t devalue the competition in the eyes of those taking part, it belongs to them and is their second most valuable and prestigious event after the World Cup. Around 50 players employed by English clubs took part in the AFCON, while little more than 150 were drawn from domestic football in their respective countries. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of high-quality African

54

players coming to the fore, such as Mo Salah and Sadio Mane at Liverpool, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Dortmund, Arsenal and Barcelona and Riyad Mahrez at Leicester and Manchester City. African talent is willing to travel – Nigeria, for instance, has almost 400 players plying their trade around the world, in 66 different countries. If clubs buy African players, AFCON is something they will just have to live with. Clubs know well in advance about the competition, so they should provision for being without a star player or two for a month. It’s not just Africa, either, having squads drawn from all over the world of football means you also have to take on their external commitments. That could be African, Asian or South American. Some managers felt a little hard done by because they lost players mid-season, but with the Premier League comprising almost 60% expatriate players, they may need to do some rebalancing of their squads. The situation is even more acute in Italy where 63% of players are expats and Portugal, where they are close to 60%. As African players become more and more valuable and the top stars go on international duty for a month every couple of years, it may not pay to have too many Africans in your pool of players because of the disruption their absence will cause. Multi-national teams make for more excitement, more diversity and higher levels of talent and good quality football. The globalisation of the game is not something we should be discouraging, far from it, but we have to acknowledge that international football is part of the deal – what makes players like Salah so appealing is the fact they offer something that so many other players cannot provide. CIES Football Observatory’s best sides for the big five leagues for the first half of 2021-22 provide a very vivid picture – there were three Africans in their Premier League XI (versus two Englishmen), while Ligue 1 had four Africans and Serie A two. Today we have leagues that are essentially all-star competitions of varying degrees of competency and their quality is determined by how much money is available. Hence the Premier League has more than 40% of the world’s top players playing for its 20 clubs. Africans are very much part of that story, and their presence and influence will continue to grow in the years
