JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for today’s massive game against Verwood Town in the Wessex League 1. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Verwood Town manager Adie Arnold, his staff, players plus the committee and fans, who have made the journey to Andover this afternoon. The Potters most recent form isn’t the greatest as they have lost to Bemerton Heath, ourselves and also to Downton last Saturday. Although they did put us under pressure in the second half in windy conditions – it was a credit to both sides to actually give a good, competitive game. Today’s game promises to be just as exciting and from my viewpoint, the lads have will want to bounce back from the disappointing defeat at Newport IOW last Saturday. Since our last home game, we have been in good form with goals coming from all round the pitch. The 8-1 win here over Totton & Eling was something we had been threatening to do and it was unfortunate for the Millers to be on the end of that result, during what is a difficult period for them after just losing their manager and some of their key players.

“TODAY’S TODAY’S GAME PROMISES TO BE JUST AS EXCITING AND FROM MY VIEWPOINT, THE LADS HAVE WILL WANT TO BOUNCE BACK FROM THE DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT AT NEWPORT IOW LAST SATURDAY ATURDAY.”

Saturday’s defeat to Newport was a tough one to take as we battled well in really tough playing conditions and but for a sticky period in the first half we defended well and created a few chances in the first half. The disappointing thing as well was losing both Josh and Cooky early on, which is never a good thing. Back focusing onto today’s big game, we need to put that loss to Newport behind us. We need to keep playing with the high intensity that we have showed in previous matches.. Can I thank you all for your recent support, I think you have been magnificent and give us such a lift when we need it most. Please continue that level of support this afternoon, believe me it does make a difference to the players and hopefully we can take three points this evening to get us back up into the play-off positions and start to put pressure on the teams above us. As this is our last home game before Christmas, can I wish you all a Merry Christmas and we will see on the 27th when we host Andover Town. Enjoy the game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

Good afternoon and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for our league game against Verwood Town. Welcome to our friends from Verwood, who will hopefully make it a cracking atmosphere this afternoon under the Foxcotte floodlights.

The same could be said for the Newport IOW game last week. By all accounts the pitch was in poor condition due to heavy rain overnight and was only just about playable.

It’s been a very hectic couple of weeks but it’s also been an enjoyable one! The game against Verwood a few weeks ago wasn’t the greatest of performances but we did enough to earn the three points. It was a game played in tricky conditions with a gale force wind. No one will remember the performances if we get promoted this season. We will just remember the points we picked up and it’s the sign of a good side if we can pick up 3 points when we are not playing well.

The league is still close with no team running away with it following Bemerton’s recent blip of two defeats in recent matches. It shows that anyone can beat anyone on the day or evening and that no side can take the opposition for granted.

6

Unfortunately, we couldn’t add that second goal that would have earned us at least a point against one of our promotion rivals. We need to be on the front foot this afternoon as we try to get back to winning ways but it will be difficult against a Verwood side that themselves will be looking to halt a run of 3 defeats, following losses to us, Bemerton Heath and Downton.

SCOOTS THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for today’s game with Verwood Town as we look to bounce straight back after our defeat against Newport IOW last Saturday.

“WE WERE WELL ON THE FRONT FOOT IN THE FIRST HALF AND GOT A COUPLE OF CHANCES THAT WE JUST COULDN’T CONVERT.”

We knew Newport would make it tough for us and they battled really well, especially after they took the lead. It took us most of the first half to get going and when we finally did we took our opportunity to score through Hoop’s free-kick. Having got back into the game, it was really disappointing to not force their keeper into any sort of action in the second half.. We played really well in the second half and you could see that they were worried as they tried to manage the game by taking their time over goal kicks and throw ins. We battled so well but it was the final ball that was lacking. Our cause was not helped by losing Josh and Cooky so early in the game. Speedy recovery fellas.

We certainly need to put that result behind us and concentrate on the league, we have beaten Downton, Ringwood and also a comprehensive win over Totton & Eling recently, recently so we need to draw on all the positives from the last few games and start to get another run of wins together starting with this afternoon.

Verwood will of course have other ideas and will be looking to earn the three points themselves and won’t make it easy for us as their recent performances against higher league sides shows they can cause teams problems, so we will need to be at our best today. We need to continue to work hard and that’s something I hope is evident to everyone watching. We have some important games coming up that could really shape s our season. Please get behind us again this afternoon, your vocal support can make ake a difference today. to Most importantly, enjoy njoy the game and stay safe. And have a great Christmas.

We were well on the front foot in the first half and got a couple of chances that we just couldn’t convert and although it was disappointing to lose, we must move on and look to the next game this afternoon.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD AGAIN NEXT WEEK WHEN THEY MAKE THE TRIP TO PLAY FLEET SPURS AT KENNELS LANE

FLEET SPURS WHO? Fleet Spurs, aka the Spurs,

from Kennels Lane, are the Street’s opponents on the 18th December. Fleet drew 0-0 against New Milton Town last Saturday and currently lie in 20th place in League 1, two points adrift of a host of clubs on 13 points, including Totton & Eling, Infinity, Ash United and Fawley AFC.

WHERE? After a horrendous start to the season and struggling to obtain players following their enforced move to the Wessex League. They lost their opening 6 matches with some heavy defeats before winning at Ash United 1-0. 1 Encouraging performances at Folland Sports, Andover Town and a draw with struggling strug Totton & Eling have given hope that Fleet and start to move up the table. This was helped with recent big wins against Infinity and Millbrook.

HOW TO GET THERE? THERE From Andover take HOW THEY DOING? After a great start with

victories over Fleet Spurs (5-0) and Whitchurch United (4-1), they then suffered back-to-back defeats to New Milton Town and Folland Sports, The Town then won 3-0 at Infinity, but the Town’s league form has been inconsistent so far this season. That inconsistency is shown in the following weeks as they lost 2-0 away at Fawley AFC in the Wessex League Cup and then 5-4 at home to Newport IOW. Recent results include, a 2-2 against Andover Town, followed by a 3-1 reverse at home to Ringwood before a victory on the island and a 6-0 demolition of Millbrook last Saturday.

10

the A303 towards London, London then onto the M3. Take Junction 4a, take the A327 exit to Farnborough (W)/Fleet/A3013. (W)/Fleet/A3013 Continue on the A327 taking the 1st exit on the first three roundabouts. At the fourth roundabout, take the third exit onto the A327 and Kennels Lane ground is 0.4 miles on your left.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? BEFORE The Street lost on their last Wessex Wesse League visit to Kennel Lane in December 2016, losing 2-1 courtesy of goals from Sam Knowles and an own goal. Overall the Street have won just 2 times of their 9 visits to Kennels Lane, Lane with the last victory coming back in October 2010 with the Street winning 2-1 thanks to a brace from Pamodou Touray. Sam Knowles scored Spurs’ Spur consolation goal. Fleet travelled to Foxcotte Park at the start of this season and were defeated 55 0 thanks to Luke Hooper hat-trick hat and further goals from Shane Lock and Lloyd Thompson.

bluffers guide Verwood Town FC... THE CLUB Originally believing the club to be formed in the 1920’s , Verwood now have information to show that it was formed earlier than this in 1905 and affiliated to the Dorset County FA that same year. Despite the early on-field results, the club flourished and after an initial move to the recreation ground, continued to play home games there until 1986 when it moved to Potterne Park According to long established club members and ex-players, traveling in and around Dorset by steam train and changing behind well layed hedge rows proved conducive to good team spirit and offered a different slant to country life. During the war years matches were organised against army teams. An ambitious move to Potterne Park in 1986 and a strong willing committee brought the club in 1989 to Hampshire League football. High league positions achieved and promotion to Hampshire League Division One in 1993. It was during this period that with the growth of the village into a town with a new name Verwood Town Football Club was established. In 2004/5 the Wessex League amalgamated with the Hampshire League and formed three new leagues. Verwood Town joined the new Sydenhams Wessex League Division Three. Two seasons later a third, place finish and promotion to the newly renamed Sydenhams League (Wessex) Division One. Progress continued apace with erection of floodlights, spectator facilities and entries into the FA Vase and later the FA Cup. In 2011/12 promotion to the Sydenhams League Premier Division was achieved. Consolidation with a solid 14th position finish was followed in ensuing

16

seasons largely safe from relegation. Three management changes from 2014 resulted in the First Team entering a more unsettled period which culminated in relegation and a drop to Division 1 for the start of 2017/18 season. The he club remains committed to grow however and push forward both on and off the pitch. In 2015 the Verwood Town Ladies Team was established participating in the Dorset Women's league, and together with the greater integration across youth and adult football we are now developing plans for improved facilities with our hope and wish to continue the development of football for all in the area. VERWOOD – THE AREA Verwood is a town and civil parish in eastern Dorset, England. The town lies 10 miles (16 km) north of Bournemouth and 13 miles (21 km) north east of Poole as the crow flies. The civil parish comprises the town of Verwood together with the extended village of Three Legged Cross, and has a population of 15,170 according to latest figures (2014) 4) from Dorset County Council. STREET 8-1 TOTTON & ELING ALLEN 12, LOCK 15, HOOPER 18, 22, RUSHER 57, 79, THATCHER 67, 80

PRENDERGAST 71

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street went goal crazy as they notched their biggest win of the season so far with an 8-1 8 demolition of Totton & Eling. It was however Totton and Eling who made the brighter start, moving forward neatly, with the home side only having a Luke Hooper shot that passed the wrong side of the post to show for their efforts until they took the lead after eleven minutes. Mikey Davis broke clear on the left with appeals als for offside being ignored and was stopped at the expense of a corner, Reece Rusher swung the kick to the far post where it was bundled in by a combination of Max Allen and Lewis Alderman with the former claiming the final touch. Within three minutes it was two as Davis again made ground on the left and Shane Lock stooped to head the cross low in to the corner of the net. Two more goals by the twenty twen minute mark effectively signalled game over as Luke Hooper seized on to a badly misplaced back pass to add number three and doubled his finish with a low drive across goalkeeper Jack Higdon after a poor goal kick gifted Street the possession.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

The home side started the second half seemingly determined to add to their lead with Hooper and Lock going close before goal number five came after a quarter of an hour. Again, Davis was the provider, pulling the ball back from the by line for Reece Rusher on the edge of the six yard box. As is customary around the hour mark both sides began to make use of their substitutes and a home change having an immediate effect with Cameron Thatcher scoring with his first touch of the ball, Rusher providing the chance after a run from the halfway line. To their credit the visitors never gave up and gained some consolation when a corner was only partially cleared and another substitute, Alfie Prendergast, found the corner of the net from the edge of the area with O’Brien possibly unsighted. Six one but still more to come as Reece Rusher came in from the right touchline virtually unchallenged and fired low across the keeper in to the far corner before Cameron Thatcher scored his second after a Davis shot rebounded off the bar – he really deserved to be on the scoresheet – and the substitute subs reacted the quickest to @AndoverNSfc slot the ball home.

VERWOOD TOWN 2-3 STREET DAVIES 68, KELLY 70

LAWTON 27, COOK 37, 59

WHAT’S THE STORY? With the wind at their backs Andover New Street were quick out of the blocks. Shane Lock and Max Allen were winning the midfield battles and the Verwood goalkeeper Callum Meyer was busy keeping the away side at bay. Ross Cook and Reece Rusher were in action and inter passing by the duo ended up with the ball being played into the Verwood box where in the 27th minute Harry Lawton bundled the ball over the line to give New Street the lead.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Verwood were struggling to get back in the game against the wind and Adam Pearson and Lewis Alderman were dominant at the back. New Street continued to call the shots and the home goalkeeper did well after good play by Josh Jeffery almost brought a second. It was no surprise, and something of a relief to the away faithful, when in the 37th minute Ross Cook, who had looked dangerous every time he got the ball, found the net from a narrow angle. New Street continued to attack and the home defence were under pressure, but although Jeffery went on a great run the shot went wide and the teams went into the warmth of the dressing room with the score still 0 - 2.

As expected, the second half with the wind now in their favour, gave Verwood the impetus and they went on the attack. However against the run of play in the 59th minute Ross Cook scored, increasing the New Street lead. Verwood, with the wind behind them, were now playing well and a last ditch interception from Lawton saved the day. At the other end Rusher went clear and found the net but play was called back for a correct offside. Verwood were now in the ascendancy and it was no surprise when in the 68th minute Ollie Davies, with the wind behind him, let fly with an outrageous strike which flew into the back of the net giving Sean O'Brien no chance.

NEWPORT IOW 2-1 STREET KELLY 22, 32

HOOPER 45

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street slipped to their third defeat of the season as they could not recover from going two goals down in the first half on the Island. In bright sunshine the Andover New came close to taking the lead in the opening minute with Luke Hooper forcing a good save from Joe McCormack and the home side then retaliating with two corners in quick succession. Connor Kelly, who was to torment the Street left flank all afternoon, broke clear and his low cross took a deflection off a defender before hitting the post and being cleared to safety.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Newport wasted a free kick on the edge of the “D” – one of many strange decisions over the course of the afternoon – but broke the deadlock after twenty three minutes when Kelly outpaced the defence on the right and slotted the ball past the advancing O‘Brien in the New Street goal.

Almost immediately the score was doubled as Kelly collected a through ball, this time on the left, the defence appealed vainly for an offside flag that was rightly not raised and the finish again was coolly executed. Street came back into the game and after McCormack had brilliantly turned a close range shot from Adam Pearson over the bar Street reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time. An attack was stopped on the corner of the penalty area, the referee awarded yet another free kick, and Luke Hooper lifted the ball over the wall and high in to the far corner of the net. The Street battled hard in the second half but were indebted to O’Brien as he saved late on but despite plenty of the ball in the opposition half, the Street could not find the final pass to create an opportunity at goal and would leave the Island pointless.

YESTERDAY’S PAGES

Programme editor KEVIN PIPKIN looks back to an historic Street verses Verwood Town clash at Foxcotte Park back in 2017 20 Andover New Street 2-0 Verwood Town 19th August 2017 The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith. Verwood were the next visitors to Foxcotte Park . Kicking up the slope was not the only initial struggle New Street faced as 10 players were absent for various reasons in the league fixture. Michael Horne, Aaron Jefferies, Allan Ralph, Michael Richmond, and Charlie Rogers all played their first games of the season. Verwood Town were straight out of the blocks from the start and put early pressure on debutant Horne’s goal. The first real chance fell to their captain Russel Dyer who blazed over from just inside the box. A flurry of corners from the away resulted in a goal line clearance from Aaron Jefferies and a fine save from Horne. With Verwood not taking their opportunity to take the lead it was Street who would capitalise. An initial shot from Captain, Casson Spencer, saw Will Dennis make a good save but give the home side a corner. A tremendous cross from Zac Hine and great work from Turpin, creating space for team mates, meant that Crisp met

the ball with a towering header which flew into the net with just 11 minutes on the clock. The best chance in the later stages of the first half fell to Spencer. With just Dennis to beat, the New Street forward seemed to get the ball stuck in his feet and the final strike didn’t possess enough power to trouble Verwood’s keeper. Horne was still busy for Street and kept Joe Meyer at bay with a good save at his feet. With just a minute showing from the restart, Turpin made a great run and was found by a long ball from Pollard. From 20 yards Turpin struck the ball wonderfully and the ball powered its was past Dennis and into the bottom corner for the prolific Journeyman’s first goal of the season. Hine was next to go close as he cut in for the right hand side but his finish didn’t match his trickery. There was one last strike in the match through Spencer, who cut in from the left flank and let fly from 30 yards. The ball zoomed past the far post and kept the score 2 nil.

WESSEX LEAGUE

LATEST NEWS Portland United boss Franklyn Clarke has revealed his squad was invited to set their own targets for this season in the build-up to hosting Hamble Club.

Roach seals Royales Move

In their midweek de-brief after the 6-0 defeat at leaders Horndean, Portland’s players set targets that were “in line” with Clarke and assistant Sam Poole’s lofty aims of their own. With Portland singing off the same hymn sheet, the Blues now turn their attentions to 16th-placed Hamble, who lie one spot and five points above the islanders in the Wessex League Premier Division. Clarke said: “We asked them to lead in terms of what they want from the season and where do we want to finish. “We asked them to set their own targets and where they’ve said they want to finish is in line with what me and Sam want. “In order to do that we need to be winning games like (tomorrow) coming, especially at home. “Our home form’s good, so we’ll be looking to continue that.”He added: “We feel we’ve covered all bases going into Hamble. They’re just ahead of us in the league so we’re looking to close that gap.” Skipper Ryan McKechnie (knee) is estimated to be two weeks away from full fitness and fellow midfielder Josh Williams serves a one-game suspension. Goalkeeper Mike Edgar misses out, so new signing Brad Smith could deputise between the sticks. Fellow new recruit Liam Sayers could also feature after scoring a hat-trick for the reserves last time out.

36

Folland Sports striker Clayd Roach has signed for Wessex Premier AFC Portchester. The Pacey Striker/Winger is current top scorer in the Wessex League 1 and will bring plenty of goals to the Portchester attack, scoring 16 in 9 starts this season! The Planemakers, who currently sit in second place in the league are surely to miss Roach’s goals as he nearly has scored half the sides total goals this season – 39. Roach’s last appearance for Folland Sports was back in mid September, when he was substituted during the 41 defeat at Bemerton Heath Harlequins

ROUND-UP Tabletoppers Horndean facing 'biggest game of the season so far' at lowly Amesbury

Manager Glenn Turnbull admits Moneyfields' FA Vase celebrations unlikely to be forgotten as they prepare for second AFC Portchester Dover Road meeting this season

Horndean boss Michael Birmingham takes his Wessex League Premier Division table-toppers to second-bottom Amesbury on Saturday claiming: It's the biggest game of our season so far.

Moneyfields manager Glenn Turnbull fears his side's FA Vase celebrations could provide Wessex Premier Division rivals AFC Portchester an added incentive to claim victory when the two teams meet for the second time this season at Dover Road on Saturday.

The Deans responded to just a second defeat of the season at Hamble by returning to winning ways with a thumping 6-0 home win over Portland last weekend. But Birmingham does want his players to rest on their laurels as they resumed normal service this season with a crushing success against the Dorset-based side. The Horndean boss admitted the manner in which his side went down at Hamble was 'unacceptable'. And he will be warning his squad not to start thinking they're in for an easy ride at second-bottom Amesbury or moving forward for the remainder of the season.

www.ansfc.co.uk

Turnbull recalls his troops 'celebrating well' after that victory as Moneyfields made it into the first round proper of the national competition. But with former Moneys manager Dave Carter bringing his Portchester side back to Dover Road for a league encounter this weekend, Turnbull insists that Vase defeat and the scenes after are likely to stick in their opponents' minds. The Moneyfields boss said: ‘As I say, they’ll (Portchester) be coming in looking for it, they’re on a bit of a roll, they’ve got points to prove. We celebrated well after the Vase win so I’m sure they’ll have that in their memory banks and will want to put that right. Ninth-placed Portchester travel to Moneys sitting three points and four places above Turnbull's men in the Wessex Premier table, although they have played four matches more. But the Moneyfields boss is wary of the challenge his side will face against a 'flying' Portchester side, who are on the back of successive wins having netted 10 times without conceding in their previous outings at Christchurch and at home to Amesbury.

TOP TEN COLLECTION THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT THE TOP 10 GOAL CELEBRATIONS.... 10 FABIAN ESPINDOLA –

8

THE BACKFLIP THAT BACKFIRED

MASK OF ZORRO

Memories get etched in our minds not only if they are great, but also if they are terrible, like Argentine footballer Fabian Espindola’s goal celebration during the 2008 match between LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake which is among the best goal celebrations in Soccer. Fabian generally celebrated goals by doing backflips. Right after scoring for his team, Real Salt Lake, he went up to his fans and began his back-flipping routine. But, unfortunately, he landed awkwardly on his ankle, and it took him several moments to realize that he had hurt himself. In fact, he had broken his ankle with his wrong moves, which kept him out of the games for two months. To make things worse, the goal he was celebrating was declared off-side and hence rule out.

FACUNDO SAVA – THE

Former Argentine footballer Facundo Sava joined Fulham in 2002. While moving to Fulham, he decided to carry with him a rather bizarre tradition of celebrating goals. He would take a Zorro mask which he stored in his sock, and wear it. When he played for Fulham in the English Premier League at Craven Cottage, he whipped out his mask after scoring against Charlton Athletic which is among the best goal celebrations in Football. In fact, during his two-year stay at Fulham, Facundo continued to do the same, and, wearing the mask, he ran up to the supporters to celebrate each of his seven goals.

7

TEMURI KETSBAIA –

THE PSYCHO OUTBURST

Former Georgian footballer Temuri Ketsbaia joined Newcastle from AEK Athens in the summer of 1997. Upon his arrival in England, he mainly remained an unused substitute. Apparently, his omission from the line-up and being made to sit with the substitutes made a huge impact in his mind, and he went on to display his displeasure after he scored a late goal against Bolton in a 1998 match. After scoring the goal, he went crazy. He ripped off his shirt and threw it into the crowd. Then, like some kind of a psychotic anti-capitalist, he attacked the advertising hoardings and created something that deserves to be a part of the best goal celebrations in football history. The poor boards suffered the attack of his dangerously swinging right boot as he flew into this fit of rage, to show the anger he had been nursing.

6

CARLOS TEVEZ –

CHICKEN DANCE

9

TIM CAHILL – THE

HANDCUFFS

Tim Cahill is an Australian footballer, who is the top scorer of all time for the Australian national team. He was transferred to Everton before the 2004-05 season. Since 2005-06, after every goal he scored, he maintained the trademark celebratory tradition of pretending to exchange punches with the corner flag as he put the Everton badge between his teeth. n a match against Portsmouth in 2008, he went a little ahead with this celebration as he decided to dedicate his winning goal to his imprisoned elder brother. He crossed his wrists as though he were handcuffed, and after several seconds, he punched the corner flag which is among the best goal celebrations.

38

Carlos Tevez is an Argentine footballer whose tango flare goal celebrations started since his Boca Juniors days. Since then, he has shown many unique celebratory acts. But his most remarkable celebration was in a Copa Libertadores match against archrival River Plate in 2004 which is among the best goal celebrations in Soccer history. After scoring an important goal, he decided to celebrate by taking his jersey. But he didn’t stop at this clichéd move and went a step ahead to do a Chicken Dance. But later, he explained why he selected that particular move. The football fans gave River Plate the nickname ‘Chickens’ after their tragic defeat against Uruguay’s Peñarol in the 1966 Copa Libertadores. Tevez received a red card after the celebration and subsequently missed the final.

5

BRANDI CHASTAIN

JERSEY RIP

We often see footballers rip off their jerseys to celebrate, to the point where it is almost an unoriginal move. But, this is true only in the case of men’s football. The scenario is completely different when it comes to women’s football. That is why one of the biggest moments of celebration in the history of women’s football is the iconic act by Brandi Chastain of the United States. Her celebration in the World Cup match against China in 1999 is among the best goal celebrations in football history. After scoring the winning goal in the penalty shootout, one of the best female footballers, Chastain, ripped off her jersey in elation. She was on the front page of every American newspaper and magazine. She later called it nothing more or less than momentary insanity.

3

DIEGO MARADONNA –

THE LOOPY CELEBRATION

Diego Maradona is one of the greatest footballers whose contribution to football is not only important for Argentina but the entire world. In the first group game of the 1994 FIFA World d Cup, Argentina had to face Greece, and Maradona scored the winning shot. Naturally, he broke into a celebration. But, the celebration went a little too far and became one of the best goal celebrations in Soccer history. He ran towards a camera, screaming, screami and stared like a lunatic, his blood-shot blood eyes round and bulging. This gave rise to suspicions that he was probably under the influence of drugs, and he was forced to take a blood test. Tragically, he tested positive in the Drug test after the match against gainst Nigeria and was subsequently sent home.

2

ROBBIE FOWLER – THE

SNORT

4

MARCO TARDELLI – THE

TARDELLI CRY

Robbie Fowler is a former English footballer who also lent his immense talent to one of the richest football clubs, Liverpool. verpool. Often referred to as the ‘God’, Fowler has several fans who believed his alleged cocaine addiction at that time. In 1999, after a great display of sports rivalry between Liverpool and Everton, Robbie pulled a celebration stunt that cost him dearly dearl and became one of the all-time best goal celebrations in football. After tucking a penalty shot, he dropped on all fours and pretended to snort the by-line, line, right in front of the Everton fans. Liverpool’s manager, Gérard Houllier’s explanation that he was trying to mime the Cameroonian grass-eating grass celebration. Tragically, he couldn’t convince the FA who slapped Fowler with a fine of £60,000.

Football, a game of great passion, often induces the display of raw emotions. Like former Italian footballer Marco Tardelli, who executed one of the most iconic goal celebrations in Football history. Marco scored the second goal for his team against West Germany in the 1982 World Cup final. He celebrated the goal with sheer ecstasy that deserves the top spot in the list of best goal celebrations of all time. In his unadulterated delight, he sprinted around the field towards the Italian bench, pumping his clenched fist. Tears streamed down his face as he wildly shook his head and screamed, “Goal!” The childlike rapturous celebration now became famous as the “Tardelli’s Cry”.

1 PETER CROUCH – ROBOT DANCE

One of the tallest soccer players, Peter Crouch, talked about his lanky body. He showed off his dance moves at a party before the 2006 World Cup and decided to take his cool moves to the fields. After scoring the winning goal in a friendly match against Hungary, Crouchie unleashed his Robot. And his dance created one of the best goal celebrations of all time. The audience also got to see his smooth futuristic bogie after the friendly win against Jamaican and thus, the robot dance became his classic goalcelebrating move. However, he retired his Robot in fear that it could get over-appreciated if he continued to display his move. But his fans again witnessed the legendary Robo-Crouch after he scored against Ukraine in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

NON-LEAGUE MANAGERS By Jon Couch

For some reason, I’ve got a rather anal fascination with the mentality of football managers at the moment. You may recall in my last NLP programme column, I highlighted the new-age approach of the modern-day coach and questioned whether their scientific methods were over-complicating the simple and beautiful game. Since then, we’ve seen a number of notable shifts in momentum across the Non-League game that only emphasizes my point further. I’ve said for a long time that Non-League managers are one of a kind and that has been proved beyond doubt so far this season. Take the situation at Barnet. No fewer than 11 managers have occupied the hot seat at The Hive over the last three years and only now are they actually showing signs of stability and, with it, progression. The Bees were mighty fortunate to avoid the drop from the National League over the two Covid-hit seasons and this summer recruited former Leeds, Liverpool and Australian international Harry Kewell as their new manager. As talented a coach as Harry clearly is, this never seemed the right fit and it was no surprise to us at NLP Towers to see the experiment come to a premature end with the club having taken just two points from their first seven games. The answer, we believe, was under their nose all the time. Dean Brennan had been hired alongside Kewell to “oversee off-field football matters” – a role every bit as odd as it sounds. Dean is one of Non-League football’s brightest young managers having plied his trade at Hemel Hempstead Town, Billericay, Kingstonian and Wealdstone and it’s no surprise to see him turning things around at The Hive in the manager’s chair.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

Another team forced into a change c were Stockport County. Simon Rusk, fresh from the Brighton & Hove Albion academy, showed glimpses of why he is so highly-rated highly in the game but hardly pulled up trees with one of the divisions biggest budgets. Cue then Dave Challinor, lured from Hartlepool epool United having steered them back into the Football League last season and suddenly Stockport look like world beaters. Don’t be surprised to see Challinor adding another promotion to his glittering CV come May. Phil Brown was another who struggled to adjust. The perma-tan tan boss may have managed in the top-flight flight with Hull City but looked a fish out of water in the National League at Southend United, prompting the Shrimpers to make an enforced change just 10 games into the club’s first-ever Non-League League campaign. cam Indeed, testimony to the unique nature of a Non-League League manager’s job came from former England international Carlton Palmer in The NLP last week. Speaking to Matt Badcock, Palmer told how his short spell in charge of Grantham Town proved a huge eye-opener, opener, admitting that he wasn’t fully prepared for the rigours of managing in the seventh tier of English football. Palmer did, however, say he learned some valuable lessons in charge of the Gingerbreads and says he is ready for another crack of the whip with a fresh attitude and approach in place. I, for one, hope Carlton gets the opportunity to put right his wrongs at Grantham to put that vast experience e to good use elsewhere. He will, however, be the first to admit that it’s no easy task.

league look In Division One Bemerton Heath remain on top, and in style, after an 80 win over Totton & Eling, the second time the visitors have conceded eight in as many weeks The game was a personal triumph for Bemerton’s Justin Bennett who scored six with Kane O’Keefe and Ronan Clancy making up the eight. If one is allowed to inject a personal note the writer saw Justin score countless goals for Andover and can recall a five but never a six. Newport bounced back from last week’s defeat with a hard fought 2-1 home win over Andover New Street thanks to two first half goals from Connor Kelly, Luke Hooper with the Street reply. Both Follands and Andover Town scored four at home, Follands against Ringwood Town and Andover against Infinity. Will Gange, James Johnson, Jo Sutherden and Gus Banhire were on target at Hamble – Ringwood’s scorer being Joe Petty – while Josh Bertie with two, Ben Emans and David Jerrard were the marksmen at the Portway. Laverstock & Ford continued their current run of form with a 3-1 win on their first ever visit to Ash United – Archie Lovegrove, Jake Rawkins and Dom Jackson with the goals with a Stan Staines penalty for the hosts, while Verwood lost for the third game running as Downton scored three without reply through Shaun Prentice, Sam Howe and Marcel Laptas. Romsey Town were the highest scorers after Bemerton, beating Millbrook 6-1 at the Bypass Ground with the scoresheet showing two goals for Oli Jenkins and one apiece for Liam Magee, Jack Odam, Owen Holloway and Ant Croucher and Jake Long credited with the Millbrook consolation.

Welcome wins for Petersfield Town and Whitchurch United over East Cowes Vics and Fawley respectively. Petersfield won 3-0 courtesy of goals from Max Paddon, Ryan Kennedy and Aaron Akoman while Robbie Henderson and Ryan Long scored the Jamboys goals with the Fawley scorer not reported. Lastly a good point for Fleet Spurs in a goalless draw at New Milton that leaves four Clubs level on 13 points at the bottom of the table – Ash United, Infinity, Totton & Eling and Fleet Spurs, three of them new to the League this season.

HOLD THE WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN The European Super League concept is controversial whichever way you look at it, but if a structure was implemented that could be aspirational and integrated, would the rest of football be so severely disadvantaged? Most of the 12 initial advocates (six from England, three apiece from Italy and Spain) have dominated domestic football in their respective countries for generations, with the exception of Tottenham in England. You could argue that clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City are Johnny-come-latelies to the trophylifting game, but the super league is, to some extent, a symptom of the way football has evolved in modern times. Whether we like it or not, clubs owned by wealthy owners is the model for multinational football. Those that have that model are succeeding, those that don’t yearn for it. What needs acknowledging is the fact this model is not going to disappear voluntarily. In another decade, there may have been another sea change and clubs like Newcastle United may have joined the elite. Since 1946-47, the Super League 12 have won 79% of their domestic league titles – that’s an astonishing figure. If anyone thought that one or two-club domination is a new phenomenum are wrong, it has merely got more polarised. And let’s be frank, the wealthy have invariably risen to the top. Furthermore, over the past decade, the big six clubs in England have won 85% of domestic honours, while in Spain, the big three have secured 90%. In Italy, 75% of prizes have gone

54

to Juventus and Inter Milan. The elite clubs are generally unpopular with the rest of the league, largely due to envious vious opponents who resent their wealth, influence and power. On that basis, having them out of the way would surely please some people. But if football was just about football the game, then this would be a legitimate argument, but what’s driving much of the angst is the legitimate fear a super league would redirect money from stakeholders like broadcasters and major sponsors towards a glamorous product and dilute the attractiveness of those left behind. If we did but know it, there are two Super Leagues already in existence, the Premier League and the Champions League. Just consider the way the last 16 is shaping-up shaping in the latter, with. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Manchester City already qualified and Atlético, A Inter Milan, Barcelona and Juventus possibly following. The super league 12 have provided eight of the last 10 Champions League finalists, the only other clubs to reach the final in that timeframe were Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain Germain in 2020. 2020 Of course, none of this would work if a European league – removing the word super would help get the subject on the table – wasn’t part of a fluid system where riches could be shared. And it is doubtful if a Champions League could sit alongside it. There’s e’s a long way to go and the story is far from over, but don’t for one moment think the subject will go away.
