ANDOVER NEW STREET v WHITCHURCH UNITED MONDAY 3rd JANUARY 2022 KICK-OFF 3PM

welcome TO FOXCOTTE PARK

Happy New Year! Welcome back to Foxcotte Park. We trust you’ve had an enjoyable festive period so far and here’s hoping that continues this afternoon. It’s the first game at home for the Street since the abandoned match verses Verwood Town. It was very frustrating last week with the weather causing the game with Andover Town to be postponed, despite the best efforts of our ground staff to get the game playable. Two heavy downpours put pay to all the hard work they put in! Despite this disappointment, we have all your usual favourites inside today’s programme, including an interview with former Jam Boy and Street midfielder Alex Dockree. What’s more, win, lose or draw, you’ve been with us every step of the way. We wonder what 2022 lies in store for us but, today, we start the new year with our neighbours Whitchurch United, who will be sure to give us a tough game this afternoon. So here is to a prosperous New Year. #UpTheStreet

JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon, welcome back to Foxcotte Park and a Happy New Year to you all for this big game against Whitchurch United in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with Whitchurch, including their manager Glyn Cherrett, his players and staff, plus the committee and supporters of the Jam Boys. Of course, this fixture quickly follows our postponed home fixture last Saturday against Andover Town. I know everyone within the club was frustrated with the weather causing the postponement, but I’d like to thank ‘Reidy’ and his helpers for their efforts in trying to get the game on last Monday. The first pitch inspection passed but once there were a couple of downpours after that then the second inspection was always going to be a problem.

Blistering Our last home league game came against Verwood a couple of weeks ago and a blistering first half display put us in control after going a goal down. It was an allround team performance and we scored some quality goals. What made our performance all the more impressive was that it came against a team in Verwood who are an excellent side. It wasn’t like we were playing a side near the bottom of the league.

Unfortunately, one of the floodlights failed towards the end of the first half and although the game was played on until the break, the referee decided that the game would have to be abandoned. I’m not one for publicly criticising officials, especially at our level, but he never gave the club the opportunity to try and get the lights repaired in order to continue the game. It left us frustrated as we fell further behind in the table but also that we were in such a strong position at half-time and now we have another fixture to add into our backlog due to our success in the FA Vase. Throughout a season, at different times, you need to deal with certain situations and I thought we showed real energy and the lads were fantastic in their work-rate a couple of weeks ago at Fleet Spurs. Remember you can make a massive difference so please continue your magnificent support you have showed over the first part of the season by continuing that this afternoon and get behind us once more. We are bound to be tested in all sorts of different ways between now and the end of the season. If we work hard on and off the pitch, we can create great things. Thanks once again for your support and enjoy the rest of the festive period, and today’s game.

BOARDROOM

WITH FOOTBALL CHAIRMAN JOHN WARD

A hearty welcome to the players, staff and fans of Whitchurch United, here today for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has enjoyed a pleasant and relaxing Christmas and New Year. We have been playing cat and mouse with the teams at the top of the league over the course of this season so far, although a decent run has seen them continue to remain within our sights, we need to get back to winning matches and put our own run together with some important matches on the horizon and that today’s game will be by no means straightforward for us. Obviously, I hope we can continue our own spectacular recent form, especially at home, and produce one of the performances that seems to have become commonplace here at Foxcotte Park.

6

The league is still close with no team running away with it, Bemerton could only draw against Romsey Town, 1-1 and Folland Sports also drew by the same score-line at home to Whitchurch. It shows that anyone can beat anyone on the day or evening and that no side can take the opposition for granted. We currently sit in 6th position in the table, just outside the play-off positions, but we have a number of games in hand on the teams above that would see us move up to at least 3rd if we were to win them. I am confident that if we maintain the type of form we have shown here at home, we have the capability of winning today’s game. Equally, however, Jamie Coleman, John Smith and the team will be conscious that anything less than that scintillating form could result in us failing to achieve our best. From a personal perspective, 2021 has been an interesting year, in the course of which we have continued our work, off the pitch, in respect of upgrading the stadium. The fact there have been no definitive announcements does not mean that we are not closely considering all aspects of our premises.

One of the things that really excites me about my role at the club is the opportunity to interface and liaise with various organisations and bodies to help assist those organisations. We undertake a number of charitable events and if you are involved in a charity, or know someone who is, please do contact the club if you have any ideas as to how we can help your charity in fundraising or other charitable aims. Whilst we are helping these deserving bodies to obtain a helping hand, in doing so we also get the opportunity to talk about the football club.

SCOOTS

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING FROM THE DRESSING ROOM WITH MATT SCOTT

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another big game as we take on our near neighbours Whitchurch United.

“SO FAR, THE PERFORMANCES ALL OVER THE PITCH HAVE BEEN TREMENDOUS, NONE MORE SO THAN THOSE OF HARRY LAWTON.”

I hope you enjoyed a good Christmas and New Year. I’d like to hope we gave you some festive cheer after our win against Fleet Spurs on the last Saturday before Christmas Day. . The win over Fleet Spurs was thoroughly deserved against an improving Fleet Spurs side. We knew that Fleet would play a certain way and our gameplan was executed to precision. We were 2-0 up at half-time after a commanding 45 minutes. The goals we scored were absolutely fantastic and well worked and we followed that up with a third goal in the second half from Harry Lawton. It was an added bonus to keep a clean sheet, although the only real time it came under threat was when Fleet were awarded a penalty in the second half but thankfully, they hit the post. The result, allied with others elsewhere going in our favour, meant we closed the gap at the top. I know it’s a horrible cliché’ but we really do not focus on any other team apart from ourselves and, of course, the club we are playing on any given day. We know that we are good enough and it’s exciting to see that we are now fulfilling our potential.

www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

So far, the performances all over the pitch have been tremendous, none more so than those of Harry Lawton. ‘H’ unfortunately picked up a nasty injury at Amesbury in the FA Vase that ruled him out for several weeks, but he has come back into the side and although he doesn’t often get in the headlines, he does an invaluable job for us. He covers every blade of grass and hunts down the opposition, never giving them any rest. And he was rewarded with his efforts against Fleet with his goal. Whitchurch have recently taken points off two big sides in the division with draws against Newport IOW at home and an even more impressive 1-1 draw with Folland Sports. We also know that once more and today will be a tough test for us.

IMPRESSIVE We can take heart from our hugely impressive home form. We’ve won eight of nine league matches so far this season at Foxcotte Park. Your support has been a driving force behind that, please keep it up this afternoon. It promises to be a fascinating 90 minutes today so please get behind us. Enjoy the match and stay safe.

welcome WHITCHURCH UNITED

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with Whitchurch United Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon. The Jam Boys make the short journey to Foxcotte Park for the first time since their narrow 1-0 defeat last season with Shane Lock’s early goal giving the Street the three points. Whitchurch won the last time the two sides met at Longmeadow, with the Jam Boys coming from behind to win the opening game of the season 2-1, Declan Shuttleworth and David Parry with the goals for the Jam Boys. Luke Hooper had put the Street into the lead. This afternoon’s match promises to be an entertaining encounter with the Jam Boys looking to return to the form that has seen them draw with both Folland Sports and Newport IOW recently, however, Street will be looking to get back to winning ways themselves after recent cancellations to maintain their promotion aspirations. The Jam Boys got off to a perfect start this season with a 2-1 home victory over Street, as mentioned earlier. This was followed with a 4-1 defeat at Verwood Town and then another win at home against Ash United with George Bishop and Nic Yeomans on target in the 2-1 victory.

To find out more about Whitchurch United visit: www.whitchurchunitedfc.co.uk

September saw the Jam Boys exit both the League Cup to Christchurch (5-1) and also the FA Vase to Ash United, 5-3 on penalties, after drawing 2-2 during the 90 minutes. There were also narrow league defeats at home to Infinity (2-1) and away at New Milton Town (3-2). A 1-0 defeat to Romsey Town in the League started October, but an encouraging 4-2 defeat at high flying Bemerton sandwiched a 4-1 cup exit at Tadley Calleva in the North Hants. Results then picked up with a 2-2 draw with East Cowes and victories at Fleet Spurs (3-1) and at Romsey Town (2-0). The Jam Boys then lost 3-0 to Andover Town at the start of November and this was followed with a 3-2 defeat at Laverstock & Ford. Ringwood were then brushed aside 3-1 before a Russell Cotes cup exit to Premier side Moneyfields and a 3-0 home defeat to Verwood Town. A narrow but much needed 1-0 win over bottom side Fleet Spurs rounded off November with Aaron Randall scoring the important goal. December has seen the Jam Boys secure a 21 home win over AFC Fawley, with Robbie Henderson and Ryan Long on target. Aaron Randall and Declan Shuttleworth then ensured a 2-2 draw with Newport IOW before Cameron George secured a point at Folland Sports. The Jam Boys ended 2021 with a 4-0 defeat at Ash United in front of an attendance of 126.

bluffers guide Whitchurch United FC... THE CLUB The club was established in 1903 by a merger of Whitchurch Rovers and Whitchurch Albion. They joined the Hampshire League in 1958, and in 1989–90 they won Division Two and were promoted to Division One. In 1991–92 they finished third and moved up to the Wessex League. After finishing bottom of the league in 1993–94 they were relegated back to the Hampshire League. However, they finished as runners-up in their first season back in the Hampshire League Premier Division and were promoted back to the Wessex League. They finished bottom of the league in 2002– 03 but avoided relegation. After finishing bottom again, the following season they were relegated to the league's newly formed Division Two. The 2012–13 season saw the club finish as runners-up in Division 1 of the Sydenhams (Wessex) League, behind leaders Brockenhurst (only by goal difference) and gain promotion to the Premier Division. The Jam Boys remained in the Wessex Premier until the 2016-17 season saw them finish in 21st position and were relegated back to League One along with Verwood Town and AFC Fawley. Since then, Whitchurch have been battling for the majority of the past 4 seasons in mid table, although they did break into the top 10 in the 2019-20 season and were in a strong 8th position before the season was ended due to Covid-19. WHITCHURCH – THE AREA Whitchurch is a town in the borough of Basingstoke and Deane in Hampshire, England. It is on the River Test. Much of the town is a Conservation Area. Because of the amount of

Whitchurch is the Gateway to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); the third largest of Britain's 46 AONBs In 1888, Charles Denning and Clara Thomas set up home in Whitchurch, where Clara's father had purchased two houses for them in Newbury Street. Here Charles established a drapery business. It was also here that one of their children, Alfred Thompson or "Tom", grew up. He later became a renowned judge Lord Denning, Master of the Rolls. The house in Newbury Street is today marked with a commemorative plaque. FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM WHITCHURCH Richard Adams, the author of Watership Down and The Plague Dogs, lived in Whitchurch. NEWPORT IOW 2-1 STREET KELLY 22, 32

HOOPER 45

WHAT’S THE STORY? The Street slipped to their third defeat of the season as they could not recover from going two goals down in the first half on the Island. In bright sunshine the Andover New came close to taking the lead in the opening minute with Luke Hooper forcing a good save from Joe McCormack and the home side then retaliating with two corners in quick succession. Connor Kelly, who was to torment the Street left flank all afternoon, broke clear and his low cross took a deflection off a defender before hitting the post and being cleared to safety.

MOMENTS

HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

Newport wasted a free kick on the edge of the “D” – one of many strange decisions over the course of the afternoon – but broke the deadlock after twenty-three minutes when Kelly outpaced the defence on the right and slotted the ball past the advancing O‘Brien in the New Street goal.

Almost immediately the score was doubled as Kelly collected a through ball, this time on the left, the defence appealed vainly for an offside flag that was rightly not raised and the finish again was coolly executed. Street came back into the game and after McCormack had brilliantly turned a close range shot from Adam Pearson over the bar Street reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time. An attack was stopped on the corner of the penalty area, the referee awarded yet another free kick, and Luke Hooper lifted the ball over the wall and high into the far corner of the net. The Street battled hard in the second half but were indebted to O’Brien as he saved late on but despite plenty of the ball in the opposition half, the Street could not find the final pass to create an opportunity at goal and would leave the Island pointless.

Alex of Andover HE’S ONE OF A SELECT GROUP OF PLAYERS THAT HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH STREET AND THE JAMBOYS. MIDFIELDER ALEX DOCKREE REFLECTS ON THE UPS AND DOWN DURING HIS TIME AT FOXCOTTE PARK AND THE LONGMEADOW “No, I think the uncertainty of the season not going the full distance played a key part, we were always wondering if the game we had next would be our last!” The Street would end the nightmare 2020-21 season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Downton, which would see Street miss out on promotion by 1 point on the points per game calculations made by the League over the last two curtailed seasons. It was probably one of the toughest seasons in Dockrees career. But more of that later – let’s start at the beginning. Everyone likes a hometown boy done good. The same can be said of Alex, although he didn’t begin his career in football at one of the Andover sides.

“Don’t worry I could talk about football all night,” says Alex Dockree as we usher our apologies for interrupting his Thursday evening. As the phone call ticked around the hour mark Dockree has reminisced about his playing career, as the conversation wandered from his time as a youngster at Whitchurch United, to joining his hometown club – Andover Town to finally playing for Street during two Covid-19 hit seasons. “It’s been amazing to recall my playing career!” he says. Dockree is excited, it’s the evening before the last day of term and Alex, who’s main profession when he isn’t playing football is a teacher, is already looking forward to the Christmas break. The former Street midfielder reflected on last season’s disappointing early ending, and we asked if the team had a hangover from the 201920 seasons unscheduled finish with 10 games to go?

“I started out playing men’s football for Whitchurch Reserves. I signed up in the New Year of 2008, as soon as I was eligible to play,” explains Dockree. “I had just turned 16 and wanted to step up away from youth football. “I played just under a dozen games for the reserve side that season and even got one goal but can’t remember who it was against or what it was like.” What he does remember was the following 2009-10 season as it marked his first team debut for Whitchurch, even though he played very few reserve matches that season. “There is a very good explanation for that. I was playing for Basingstoke Town Academy U19’s that season but was also dual signed with Whitchurch so when Basingstoke’s season ended, I was able to play for the Jam Boys. I had a good season with Basingstoke, and it helped set me up for the future.” Alex’s first appearance for Whitchurch was an important one too – “It was the Andover Open Cup Final against Otterborne. I can remember going into the changing room and some of the guys were like ‘who’s this kid?’ but Marc Rees stood up

going home to play rugby, so I wasn’t missing out by going home and I was also getting paid. I could get a train home from Cardiff for £8 then and I would make the most of getting my washing done at home. I’d also did coach up at Andover Youth on a Saturday morning, so my weekends would be fairly busy with football.” “Whitchurch were in a progression stage and building for the future, the aim was to get into the Wessex Premier. We had some talented players like Paul Coventry and Brett Denham in the squad, but we finished in 8th position.”

for me and said, ‘no he’s quality, we’ll be ok tonight with him in the side.’ Well, I came on and endorsed what Marc said, as I played well and even scored at the end of the game in the penalty shoot-out victory. “I don’t know what it was, but I didn’t feel any pressure when I was younger taking a penalty. The game was played at the Portway, and I can remember placing the ball and looking at the goal and it looked massive, and I just didn’t care, which I know sounds awful, but I was young and very confident. Missing never entered my head. These days I’m a bag of nerves over a penalty kick!” he laughs. Following that season Alex was furthering his education at Cardiff University. After partaking in pre-season training at Andover. “I took part in the pre-season training at Andover but knew that I would be at Cardiff when the season started. I joined the Cardiff Met university side and we were training and playing twice a week, we were trained by Christian Edwards , who had played for Swansea, Notts Forest and Bristol Rovers so he was very experienced. “University not only gave the qualifications to start me on my road to become a teacher, but it also helped my progression in regards my football career. It was a tough environment, but it stood me in good stead. These days I see a lot of young players have everything delivered to them on a plate. I think all young players need to learn discipline and the respect. Cleaning boots for the older pros is not a bad thing.” The 2011-12 season would see Dockree return to Whitchurch, “I got a call from Jim Macey, and he wanted me to play. My mates at Uni were

“The following season, I played just the one game for Whitchurch, which was in the FA Cup against Folland Sports. To be honest, I tried to please everybody and signed for both Cardiff Met and Whitchurch. In the end I had to make a call to Jim and say that I wasn’t coming back and that I would be playing in Wales. I know it made Jim cross with me and don’t get me wrong we are on good terms now, but I know he wasn’t best pleased with my decision. In the end it worked out well for both sides.”

“Going up a division after having such a successful season the previous year was very tough, most of the players you come up against have played at a higher level and are either looking to return up the footballing ladder or looking for one last pay day until they give up playing. Either way you’re playing against top quality opposition, week in, week out and it can be hard. I also wasn’t enjoying my football at the time. Andover Town had just reformed and were going well in Division 1 and I really wanted to be a part of it. So, after 6 games I made the decision to move to Andover Town. The players they had at the time was unbelievable. Quality all over the pitch; Lewis Benson, Claudio Herbert, Lloyd Foot and Michael Dixon. “That season for Cardiff Met was unbelievable we won everything. It was like all the seasons before we were geared up for this one season. We won the Welsh League Division Two and had to play at some horrendous places. I was also playing up-front for the side and some of things that the centre backs use to do behind the refs back were shocking! But we just got on with it. We were miles better than the other sides in the league and fully deserved the title. Whitchurch also achieved promotion. Missing out on the title on goal difference to Brockenhurst.” The following season was not so happy a time for Alex as he returned to Whitchurch for the challenge of Wessex Premier football.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make but I needed a change of scene and I always wanted to play for my local side. That season was another good one in the end, although we ended up finishing second in the league to Petersfield Town by a point. We drew against them on the Easter Saturday and felt that as long as we kept winning, they wouldn’t be able to catch us, unfortunately on the Easter Monday we drew with Tadley Calleva, and Petersfield never looked back.” Alex would also end the season missing out on silverware following injury in the Andover Open Cup against Otterbourne.

“I got knocked out during the final, so I wasn’t able to take a penalty in the shootout. Otterbourne were a good side at the time and were managed by Richard Luffman. Fortunately, I was able to play in the Hospital Cup Final against Bemerton. I remember scoring to make it 2-1 after Claudio equalised and Lloyd Foot got the winner late on. It was a great final.” Dockree would continue to play at the Portway, although he remembers not always fitting into manager Neil Bensons plans. “I was starting from the bench quite often and I was knocking on the managers door, demanding to know why I wasn’t starting matches. I then got a chance up front and started to find the back of the net. I was very much a confidence player. If I started well then, I would be consistent always through the game. I also often scored in batches and if I scored one, I would more than likely get a second in the same game. It was at this time that Alex would receive recognition for reaching 100 appearances for the Town. “I got a hat-trick that game,” he recalls. “We played Fareham Town and I was presented with my 100 appearances trophy and then went on to score a hat-trick in front of nearly 200 people for my hometown club. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

26

It would get better for both Andover sides in 2017-18 when both would finish as runners-up in their respective leagues. Although both sides would be kicking themselves for not actually winning the leagues. “We were flying in the league, by this time we had Mike Gosney, Zach Glasspool, Jo Chamberlain, Joe Wright to name a few. We were about 15 points clear of Blackfield & Langley and bossing the league. We overcame losing to Blackfield at their place and we went to Hamworthy and came from a goal down to win 41 and went out in Bournemouth to celebrate.” That is where Dockree’s season would come to abrupt end, when he was involved in an incident that so nearly ended his football career. “I basically got hit on the night out and ended up fracturing my skull. I do not remember how it happened or who did it, but I was side-lined with the doctors telling me I could not play but I was desperate to finish the season. The most frustrating thing was I could not even go and watch the first three matches after the incident, so I was constantly refreshing Twitter to find out what was happening. “I was finally allowed to go watch the side when they travelled to Horndean and we lost 3-2 despite Zach Glasspool scoring twice. I think the day I realised we were not going to win the league was when we drew 3-3 with Team Solent at home.

“We were 3-0 down and Solent were not exactly a great side and then with 20 minutes to go we started a comeback with Joe Wright and Zach Glasspool scoring. Then Zach got his second to equalise with 3 minutes left and then Mike Gosney struck the crossbar in injury time and if that had gone in then I think we would have won the league. “Meanwhile, I had been working on my fitness to get myself back playing as soon as I could, and I penned in the Russell Coats Cup Final at the end of the season as the match I was aiming for. “I was in the gym every day, desperate to be ready for that game as I had scored in the semifinal, and I was relieved that I made the bench. I did have to wear head protective gear like current Wolves striker Raul Jimenez. People were concerned that I might do more damage to my head, but I wasn’t as the injury didn’t occur on the field playing. I never gave it a second thought. The final was frustrating to watch as Stoneham were bossing the midfield and I just wanted to get on the pitch to affect the game. And I was brought on at half-time and helped win the game 1-0. That would be my last game for Town as during the close season the club rejected promotion and the team disbanded. “I joined Alresford Town, along with a few others from Andover but I didn’t get the best of starts as I broke my foot in the last pre-season friendly, when my foot got kicked by a defender clearing the ball and I knew straight away that it was broke. My wife was not best pleased as we have photos of our holiday and I’m wearing shorts and a massive Robocop style boot! “I got back playing for Alresford, but again I wasn’t enjoying the long drives out for home games all the time and we were expecting our first child soon, so after 25 games I contacted the manager Richard Luffman and explained that things were not working out for me, and he was very understanding as long as I didn’t go straight back to Andover Town or New Street. I was honest with him, and he was fine with that. The itch to get back playing was still there for Alex and at the start of the 2019-20 season it was announced that he had signed for Street. “John Smith had always wanted to sign me, and a number of times made enquiries, but it just wasn’t the right time for me. When he came calling during the summer of 2019 it felt right. www.ansfc.co.uk

facebook.com/AndoverNewStreet

“Again, I didn’t get off to the best of starts as I injured my knee in a pre-season friendly, playing on the Charlton Astro pitch, so my competitive debut didn’t happen until the end of August when we lost 2-1 to Alton in the FA Vase. “After that though we went on an amazing run of results. We had a brilliant squad with the likes of Luke Hooper, Rafa, Jason Silver and Jazz Beavis and were eyeing promotion before Covid hit and put a stop to the season. It then seemed to take ages for us to get back training and we lost a couple of key players. “It was a shame it didn’t work out for Danny Dolan as manager, as he is a great guy and a good technical manager, but JC and Smithy are doing a great job this season and I fully expect the squad they have at their disposal to be promoted at the end of the season.” The most important question for Alex is, who will he be supporting this afternoon? “New Street! It should be a really good game between two good sides and hopefully a big crowd. I’ve got many more friends at the club now compared to Whitchurch, so it has to be Green and Black!” @AndoverNSfc

Andover New Street 1-0 Whitchurch 27th October 2020 4 United THE BOSS The Street got off to a bright start in the 2020/21 season with a 2-0 away victory over Newport IOW, thanks to a debut goal from Ally McCracken and Shane Lock securing the win in the second half. This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 defeat at home against Petersfield, with the unfortunate Scott Kinge scoring an own goal late on. Cup defeats followed at Bashley in the League Cup and then at New Milton Town in the FA Vase, after a 0-0 draw, the Linnets advanced on penalties. A much-needed win at home to lowly Totton & Eling came next with Brett Denham getting off the mark with two well taken goals in the second half. The first came from a deep Matt Scott free kick that found the head of Alex Dockree, who headed back across the goal for Denham to head home from close range. The second came shortly later when Denham played the ball towards Kai Sterne, but the ball went loose back into Denham’s path and as he continued his run, he hit a first-time effort low into the bottom corner. A third goal arrived from debutant Michael Davis, who scored the goal of the game when he found the top corner from the edge of the box, Totton would get a consolation through a Matt Scott own goal late on. The Street looked in a commanding position 2-0 up at half-time against Andover Town, through a spectacular Danny Urry strike and a Scott Kinge header, but a bizarre second half and some questionable referee decisions resulted in a 5-2 defeat and the Street finishing

Further draws against Hythe & Dibden, Downton and Fawley saw the Street in mid-table and losing ground to the sides at the top of the table. Their next game was against Whitchurch, who were also struggling for results near the bottom end of the table. The Street got off to the perfect start when Cameron Rohart-Brown managed to break clear on the left and found the perfect ball across for Shane Lock to score after just 5 minutes on the clock. The Street fans hoped this would signal more goals, but Whitchurch defended well and limited the Street to few opportunities from then on and the game went onto until with minutes to go Whitchurch substitute Nick Beattie was badly hurt following a clash with his own player. After a lengthy delay, the Street would manage to hold on to the lead until the end to get their promotion push back on track, although the season would eventually finish early due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

NOTICE THREATENED ON NEWPORT FC AND RYDE SAINTS GROUNDSHARE

There are plans to end an agreement between Newport FC and Ryde Saints, which sees the football clubs sharing Smallbrook Stadium. In a letter to players, supports and club members, Ryde Saints says ending the deal would mean The Port would have just 30 days to find somewhere else to base itself.

Ryde Saints chair, Jamie Humm, has written to say the groundshare was made on the agreement Newport FC would upgrade Smallbrook's floodlights. As previously reported by the County Press, in May, the lights were a 'key component' of the deal, Mr Humm wrote. Mr Humm says an offer of cash has been made instead, in recent months, but claimed it was only a 'fraction' of what the new lights would cost. Mr Humm wrote accepting anything other than new floodlights would be a 'betrayal' to Ryde Saints and its supporters. Currently homeless, Newport FC has permission to build a new ground at the Racecourse Roundabout, near Whippingham. Its old site, St George's Park in Newport, is going to become out of town shopping, including a drive-through McDonalds. In October, an alternative plan for a to Seaclose Park was dropped, leaving Newport 'disappointed.' At the time, Newport FC chair, developer Tony Wake, pledged to move ahead with the Whippingham plans. He said: "There are still one or two issues we need to sort out, but we hope to begin work on this high-quality sports stadium by the end of the year and have it ready for use by the summer of 2022." In its letter to fans, Ryde Saints said it had taken into account the money brought by Newport FC to Island Speedway's Smallbrook bar. It also recognised the commercial importance of the sale of St George's Park. Mr Humm wrote that he believed some Newport games are due to be played at Beatrice Avenue, the home of East Cowes Vics, although a previously agreed groundshare has ended between The Port and the Vics has ended. Mr Humm wrote: "As chairman, I recognise we could, and maybe should, have been quicker to move and more robust in our management of Newport."

CHRISTMAS NON-LEAGUE APPEAL

By David Richardson

The appeal of football at Christmas showed its popularity once more even in challenging conditions for supporters. Despite Omicron cases rising over 100,000 in England and the weather being as wet and windy as ever, fans still turned out in big numbers for the festive fixtures. Attendances in Non-League have been impressive after fears the pandemic may put off some spectators returning to matches. But football – coupled with the hard work of club volunteers – has shown it can be a safe space. The failed European Super League plan is likely to have also benefitted the lower levels with some supporters turning their back on the top-flight. Non-League’s affordability remains as does the ‘real’ feel of attending matches and standing on terraces. The game as these levels is continuing to grow and the Boxing Day schedule provided further proof of that. Stockport County welcomed 8,896 for their Boxing Day clash with Altrincham. It was the highest crowd on the day outside of the Championship and the club’s biggest league attendance since 2008. Elsewhere in the National League, there was 3,830 at Torquay United in their game against Yeovil Town. A crowd of 3,759 was at Hayes Lane for Bromley’s televised fixture with Southend United as 3,699 took in the local derby between Aldershot Town and Woking. In National League North, AFC Fylde and Chorley had 2,608 spectators while the derby between Spennymoor Town and Darlington saw a crowd of 2,404. There was also 2,082 at AFC Telford United for the visit of Chester. Dorking Wanderers welcomed a record crowd of 2,048 on National League South and put on a show with an 8-0 victory over promotion rivals Havant & Waterlooville. Tonbridge Angels had the next highest of 1,669 against Maidstone United followed by Oxford City with 1,208.

The Northern Premier League had a combined total of more than 30,000 in attendance for their final games of the year on December 27th. There were ten four-figure crowds across the four divisions, including more than 2,000 at FC United, Matlock Town and Marine. A total of 12,213 fans went through the turnstiles in the 11 Premier Division games, averaging at 1,110 per game. In the West Division, the average crowd was even bigger coming in at 1,155 across the seven games, including a 2,150 sell-out for Marine’s local derby with Bootle, who won 3-0. There were 1,679 at Clitheroe for their 5-1 win over Colne, while 1,100 saw Leek Town win away at Kidsgrove Athletic. There was a fourfigure crowd in the East Division too, where Marske United lost at home to Stockton Town in front of 1,250. Horsham hosted 1,284 for their fixture with Lewes in the Isthmian League Premier while 1,314 were at Bury Town against Stowmarket Town in the North division. In the South East, Herne Bay won 7-2 against Whitstable Town in front of 1,119. Banbury United attracted their biggest league attendance for 52 years of 1,221. The Southern League Premier Central leaders beat Stratford Town 1-0. Bromsgrove Sporting had 1,658 against Stourbridge and Hednesford drew 1,142 for their game with Rushall Olympic. The depth, and support, of the English pyramid continues to be incredible. It was also heart-warming to see many NonLeague clubs supporting the #NoHomeKit campaign over the Christmas fixtures to raise money and awareness around homelessness. The idea - created by charity Shelter – called for clubs to ditch their home kit and instead wear an away or third kit in an act of support and solidarity for people without a home.

league look Three games completed on Monday in the Premier Division with the top one being at the County Ground where a single first half goal from Eddie Hodge in front of an attendance in excess of 200, gave Hamworthy United victory over Brockenhurst and narrowed the gap between the two sides at the top of the table to three points, with Hamworthy having two games in hand. AFC Stoneham remain in fifth spot after a 3-0 victory over Blackfield & Langley, courtesy of goals from Mat Bainbridge, Nathan Clements and Jim Orvis while Shaftesbury’s fine home form continued with a 3-1 defeat of Portland United. The scores were level at one apiece at the break but by ninety minutes two goals from Aidan Shepherd and one from Asa Phillips had proved enough with Matt Burrows claiming what was in the end a consolation goal for the visitors. The games at Portchester, Bournemouth and Christchurch all fell victim of waterlogged pitches. Division One saw the games at Andover New Street, Fawley, Newport and Romsey succumb to the weather but the four games that were played produced 21 goals between them. In the early kick off Ash United continued their recovery from a bad spell with a 4-0 defeat of Whitchurch United with Harley Webster, Jordan Robertson, Toby Bunce and Emeka Nwaubani all on target. A good three points for Ash but a disappointing outcome for the visitors after recent performances against Newport and Follands. Six goals were equally shared between Downton and Ringwood Town at Wick Lane after the visitors had led at the break. Sam Howe with two and Marcel Laptas for the home side and Harry Smith, Ryan Hamm and Callum Horton earning a point for the visitors.

Across the other side of Salisbury six goals at Laverstock & Ford as well with the home side coming out 4-2 victors over Millbrook. Archie Lovegrove led the way for Laverstock with two, backed up by Russell Jones and Harley Roberts with Mark Barker claiming both the Millbrook goals. This win took Laverstock in to the top five in the table, which has been something of a closed shop for some time and both Downton and Laverstock reported attendances of over 200 on the day.

The final game was a close fought encounter at Verwood with New Milton claiming the spoils by the odd goal in five thanks to a double from Ben Cooper and a single from Chris Long with the Potters’ goals coming from Diop Evans and Joe Freak. The four games scheduled for Tuesday were reduced to two with the postponements at Alresford and Baffins, leaving one in each Division, the last fixtures of 2021. In the Premier Division Moneyfields crossed to Cowes Sports and won by five goals to one after being three up at the break. There were two goals for Tyler Moret, one each for Joe Briggs and Tom Cain plus an own goal with Connor Furmidge notching the Cowes consolation. At somewhere around 9.30 in the evening the final whistle sounded at Fleet Spurs ending both a 1-1 draw with Petersfield and Wessex League Football for 2021. Khoury Taylor and Marvin Orepo scored the goals for their respective sides leaving the home side one point adrift at the bottom of the table while Horndean and Bemerton lead the two Divisions going in to 2022.

HOLD THE

Back Page WITH GAME OF THE PEOPLE EDITOR NEIL JENSEN Industrial action in British football is relatively uncommon, but there could be something stirring on the horizon if recent mumblings are accurate. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, for one, has suggested players could consider going on strike over the issue of their personal welfare, while Chelsea’s boss, Thomas Tuchel and Liverpool’s Thomas Tuchel are unhappy about the scheduling of matches during the pandemic. Foreign coaches have always been critical of fixture planning and the potential for congestion, but with health issues coming into the equation there is certainly more chance of some sort of protest from players, many of whom have not been vaccinated until recent weeks. Public reaction will be mixed towards the plight of footballers earning vast sums of money, but in truth, football should have been suspended once the pandemic started to affect squads. At the very least, it should have introduced emergency competitions to cut down on travelling and more recovery time between games – a simple, regionalisation, such as those used during the second world war would have been an ideal solution to keep the industry running at a lower speed. Suspension of some competitions, such as the Football League Cup would also have helped. The most likely outcome will be limited, if any, change. On one hand, the size of the top

54

complaint, Manchester City, for example, have over 30 players out on loan and the English “top six” clubs have around 100 players on loan deals. But if one club is more impacted by the pandemic than others, then it changes the competitive landscape, and not necessarily by levelling things out. How will the public react? It will probably be mixed, but it does, in a way, raise questions about the forthcoming World Cup in 2022. We’ve seen how players have carried on with their Black Lives Matter demonstration by taking the knee before kick-off. The game has made it clear it will not tolerate racism, yet nobody is applying that same sentiment to Qatar and the World Cup. If feelings are running high, then surely England, for example, should NOT be going to Qatar in protest about a suspect regime and an inappropriate venue for the global game. Of course, it will not happen, because football can shelve its moral code when it is inconvenient, as we have seen in the case of Newcastle United’s new owners. But we should also realise we’re all part of the same hypocrisy – Saudi Arabia is an ally of Britain and in late summer 2020, sold some £ 2 billion worth of weapons to the middle eastern state. The year 2022 may see more controversial takeovers and investments as football attempts to fill the gaps caused by the pandemic, which will surely deliver new types of providers. For the good of football, all stakeholders have to do what’s right rather than what’s allowed.
