ANDOVER NEW STREET - v - WHITCHURCH UTD 05/11/2022 | FOXCOTTE PARK
THE MANAGER
Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Foxcotte Park to all our supporters for this afternoon’s game against our visitor’s Whitchurch United. I’d like to welcome the Jam Boys management team, their staff, players and all officials and supporters who have made the short journey to Andover this afternoon. Whitchurch are a club, who have struggled over the past few seasons at the wrong end of the League One table. This season they have shown in patches what they are capable of and come into this game on the back of a creditable 3-3 draw at New Milton Town. The Jam Boys have always been a tough opposition for us, and I expect nothing different this afternoon. We will need to be at our very best to get a positive result. We come into the game having continued our impressive unbeaten run in the league and also progressed in the FA Vase, with an excellent away performance at Street a couple of weeks ago. I thought the Vase tie against Street was a good advert for the Wessex League.
I’m not being biased when I say my team were magnificent, and so were you in the stands. We were at it from the very beginning and showed great character to come from behind against the run of play and show the attacking prowess we have as we grew stronger in the second half. The momentum followed us down to Hamworthy Rec again where we were again resilient. Having got into a strong position just before halftime, I was disappointed to concede a penalty on the halftime whistle. A few choice words at halftime had the desired effect. With Locky scoring late on to secure the points and then Cooky completing his hat-trick. Please give it everything you’ve got from stands. We’ve had plenty to cheer in recent years and we all feed off each other here, which I know we will be doing again today as we set about making Foxcotte Park a fortress it usually is.
I’M NOT BEING BIASED WHEN I SAY MY TEAM WERE MAGNIFICENT, AND SO WERE YOU IN THE STANDS. WE WERE AT IT FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
Enjoy the game.

Action from a previous meeting with Whitchurch at the start of last season. The Jam Boys came from behind to win 2-1, after Luke Hooper had given the Street a 1-0 lead. Here the Street go close late on as they put pressure on the Jam Boys defence.

THE NLP PAPER
ANDOVER NEW STREET - v – WHITCHURCH UTD 05/11/2022 | FOXCOTTE PARK
THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER WITH JON COUCH – NLP REPORTER The word ‘legend’ is a term used pretty loosely in football these days, but there aren’t many people in the Non-League game who consider Neil Cugley as anything but. Last week, the veteran boss stood down as manager of Folkestone Invicta after 26 years and 1,299 games in the dugout, making him the longest-serving manager in the top eight tiers of English football since Arsene Wenger left Arsenal in 2018. “He changed my life,” striker Ade Yusuff told us. “A lot of managers I’ve had haven’t really understood me as a player – maybe even a man, sometimes – whereas he’s allowed me to be myself. That’s helped me to flourish on the pitch under him.” Twenty six years. It can never be underestimated just what an achievement that is, especially in this day and age where managers are lucky to last 26 days before the knives come out. That, though, is where Non-League football is cut from a different cloth. Yes, there are still the odd overreactive parting of ways but I like to think there is a genuine loyalty that high-end clubs could learn from. Cugs may have stepped away from the dugout but his heart and soul remains at Cheriton Road. His wife runs the bar and his stepson is one of the club’s biggest fans. You can bet Cugs will join them on the terraces, barking his usual instructions, on a Saturday afternoon from here on in.
Cugley’s exit got me thinking about other Non-League legends from the dugout, of which there are quite a few.
On the south coast alone, Tommy Killick, at Poole Town, and Dave Diaper, at Sholing FC, have been at their respective clubs for over 20 years, while Terry Brown, at the age of 70, has recently returned to the Aldershot Town dugout on an interim basis, leading the club to three straight wins on the back of Mark Molesley’s departure. You can’t buy experience like that. So, with Cugley swapping his trench coat for gardening gloves, who is the new managerial stalwart who has served his club the longest? The answer to that is Bacup Borough boss Brent Peters.
Twenty-five years ago, then Borough chairman Frank Manning and co-director Graham Schofield walked into a local pub looking for help to rescue the historic club from extinction.
Little did they know that the man they were talking to would still be holding that baton twenty-five years later. The likes of Cugley, Peters, Killick, Diaper, Brown and others are the lifeblood of their club and the NonLeague game as a whole. Loyalty is everything in life in general – it’s so gratifying to see it rewarded.
