In our response to the competition of the extension of the Tampere Art Museum we looked at how a local museum could retain its relevance in the near future of our fast moving world. We’ve designed the museum extension by answering this question with the aim to make sure that people, especially young ones will use it, who would otherwise never go there on their own.

The first part of our answer was to make the building as interwoven into the public space as possible. This was possible, since the competition brief asked for rethinking the nearby public spaces as well. By patching up the existing urban fabric with small additions making the nearby Pynikkintori square a pedestrian friendly area we’ve created a framework for an accessible museum building. and creating. The museum complex contains the existing museum building and an addition which has two elements: the separate masses, which houses the different required functions and the connection piece between them, a multi-level public space. This element connects the different functions like mortar between the bricks and allows the museum to be an integral part of the surrounding public spaces. It consists of two decks and three courtyards.

The upper deck is what makes it possible to cross the museum block unobstructed on ground-level. The lower deck is what connects all the different functionalities of the museum in the belly of the building complex. . Both of these levels are public spaces. The whole museum is assembled around three different public courtyards which have different characters and they are essentially steps to lure people into the museum. In the summer the boundaries open up, and the courtyards merge with the museum creating a lush garden. Our aim was that people will come to this museum, not only when they want to see exquisite artworks, but also to relax, meet with friends, drink a coffee and enjoy nature.

The second part of our answer to the question of keeping the museum’s relevance is to avoid uniformity. Especially smaller museums must have a strong character to avoid being overshadowed by larger ones. Fortunately in this case the existing museum building is not only a very balanced and humble building but also an important part of Tampere’s history and a very strong character. That’s why we wanted to avoid the situation when the new addition overshadows the existing one. The programme required a much larger space than the existing building, so we’ve decided not to put one big building next to the old one, but several new ones which have a similar scale the existing one. Our building uses traditional materials with modern technology. he buildings’ skeleton is made of glulaminated timber columns and beams painted in white. The usage of timber allows the building to reduce its environmental footprint. Because a part of the building is underground it can use the isolating effect of the earth reducing the energy needs of the building. The walls of the masses are painted in different soft colors. This pays homage to the similarly styled wooden houses of the countryside. It makes the dull and long northern winter a little bit happier place.

How to be prepared for the art of the future is the final part of the question we’ve posed. A museum is built for the ages. Today it is impossible to not acknowledge that the world of art produces more and more unexpected art pieces. So we want to be prepared for art forms which don’t even exist today. So our museum is a three dimensional blank canvas, which can accommodate a variety of art forms. An important element of this is the smart roof of the exhibition places. Totally dark spaces, diffuse lights, directed spotlights or letting natural light in is possible with the roof element. The spaces for exhibition also differ in other ways: the two main exhibition rooms can be combined or separated in different configurations. We also changed our perception of how we look at circulation spaces. Instead of looking at it as a wasted space, it has to be an integral part of the exhibition. We also encourage to extend the museum outdoors by dedicating one of the courtyards into an outdoor exhibition space. This can be used to create art that engages the public in a way that would be impossible inside.

The memorial commemorates the countless victims of totalitarian regimes. Recent news show that we can still learn a lot from our past. We have to keep the memory of these dreadful atrocities alive in order to prevent something similar happening in the future. That’s why we’ve put the emphasis on displaying the process of totalitarian states dismantling society. The geometric composition hints at the utopic being of totalitarian systems where artificial principles rule over humaneness.

The memorial consists of a raster and two vertical elements. The strong raster put onto the square emphasises the horizontal directions implying that of an endless space. This endlessness signalises that we will never have grasped the whole picture we can only understand fragments of it. There are two vertical elements: „The Well of Remembrance” and „The Arches of the Spirit” The „Well of remembrance” is its counterpoint, a plane of water inserted in the raster. As an abstract mirror it gives the outside viewing perspective to the monument, and opens up the memorial in the vertical dimension as well. The whole memorial is build up of small bricks. It’s conveying its message by the multiplication of these simple elements. Near the vertical elements the bricks are sometimes transformed into plaques conveying messages from past and contemporary humans regarding totalitarianism.

„The Arches of the Spirit” serve the inner reflection. It is created by an eternal architectural element, an arch. An arch is a blank state, it can be part of a museum building, a viaduct, a colosseum or a totalitarian government building. By itself its function is not determined. By being arrayed in a matrix in this case, it becomes an exaggeration of itself. By gradually excluding the outside world it evokes subtle feelings prompting the visitor to dive into its own soul. The proposal uses two materials: large format stone pavements and traditional small sized bricks. The arched structure’s walls are built in a hollow way, so the monument is kept lightweight. All the brick elements are built with mortar in a traditional way. This way there is no need for additional steel or concrete structural elements. The quotes on the walls are etched into special bricks, which have a black finish. The chairs around the square are weatherproof steel chairs. They can be bolted into the pavement for security reasons.

The flat is of a typical configuration of courtyard typed houses in Budapest. The parts of the building facing the street were housing the representative apartments of the owner of the building. In the socialist times these apartments were split up into smaller ones. The generosity of the former configurations were most of the time lost. Our aim is to restore the elegance of the past with modern materials and finishes.
