ABOUT ME

“But suddenly I realized that thinking was for fools and that the clever ones use inspiration Alexander DeLarge , A Clockwork Orange, 1971 I strongly believe in inspiration being a great asset for any designer. To me it means to be daring and try to think outside of the box, putting yourself out of the comfort zone. As a matter of fact, architecture is an open process that finds inspiration outside of its boundaries and stimulates me to dive far beyond mine. Science, literature, music and art, along with the senses and emotions associated with them, are the main fields from which I draw ideas and inspiration for my designs. These, together with curiosity and passion, are what pushed me during these years to step outside of my safe zone, starting a process of growth to re-invent myself from scratch and look at the design process from ever changing points of view.

RESILIENT ARCHITECTURE

The Water Management Think-Tank

Course: “Resilient Architecture” Graduation Studio - Master Thesis - TU/Eindhoven Year: 2016 - 2017 Professors: Dr. Irene G. Curulli, Assistant Professor Dr. J.C.T. Voorthuis, Associate Professor (UHD) Philosophy in Architecture Ir. J.P.A. (Jan) Schevers - Expertises, Docent

“Resilient Architecture” is a graduation studio focusing on the reuse of dismissed shipyards and water dynamics in the Delta of the Netherlands. This graduation builds on resilience, exploring possibilities and limits of a design structured on water. The latter is the linchpin of the project, shaping landscape and crossing the entire building as a nervous system, lending space dynamism. The final outcome of this research is a resilience strategy, carried out through a water-based ecological infrastructure, able to connect natural and built environment, to simplify the intricacy of water management, putting in contact research users and public users. Thus, the bond between resilience and design is crucial. The Water Management Think-Tank is an open port for anyone with a mind, with or without scientific background, that can be used to discover new frontiers. This design aims to provide an instrument where spaces and events collide increasing the exchange between building and neighbourhood, industry and city, twisting the concept of the office environment creating spatial interactions by means of physical and visual connections that occur through water. This project represents a whole system where environment and architecture are connected, providing the concept for a building influenced by climate and not vice versa.

SEA DOMINATED AREA

TRANSITION AREA

The plurality of bodies involved in the process of water management requires a well structured organization. This system results in a complex matrix of professionals and institutions, coordinated by the Delta Commissioner, that constitute the so-called “multi-disciplinary approach”.

The water management shall be able to answer problems of economic, political, social and environmental concern. Due to this varied nature, the outcome cannot be expressed by a single solution, rather by a wide range of strategies, adaptable to the different scenarios.

This intricacy results in a difficult communication with users, whose knowledge concerning the matter is small. Thus, comlexity is stressed by a lack of awareness.

EXCHANGE: link between three different systems (users - knowledge - environment) INTERACTION: reaching a condition where the edges between the systems are more convoluted generates more interaction BUFFERING: the level of interaction reached shall be processed through buffering elements able to filter the exchange between systems The masterplan is based on the interaction between the three system. It represents the buffering elment processing the exchange users/researchers. Water is a connector and shapes the landscape and the way users experience it

WATER SYSTEM

LANDSCAPE

BUFFERING ELEMENTS

The masterplan is structured on several layers. Water is let into the area and it’s the main buffering element shaping the landscape and connecting the different functions. Water storages, connected by a flow crossing the entire plot, provide more room for river and help the Noord and Maas discharging water thanks to areas that can be flooded.

Landscape is based on biodiversities present in the area. Willow forests, marshlands and a wide range of different plants distributed along the waterfront contribute to create an everchanging experience for users, functioning again as buffering elements, filtering the contact between users and research.

Former buildings are re-used to host different functions setting a preliminary experience for visitors. These “buffering elements” host activities based on the concept of informal learning outside the classroom. They combine resilient functions with open air and indoor activities, in order to ease the contact with users.

BAMBOO CASE

Course: Architectural Engineering - Production&Parts Year: 2014 - 2015 Professor: Ir. J.P.A. (Jan) Schevers - Expertises, Docent

The assignment for this course is to design a movable pavilion starting from the detail. “Bamboo Case is a project based on functional dimensions and standardization of the parts. The aim is to reduce costs and improve efficiency during transportation and construction stage, solving, at the same time, problems related to atmospheric agents. In order to achieve this goal the design is structured around modular elements, repeated on a regular grid to generate a clear and well organized structure. Particular attention is also given to materials, combining bamboo, natural rope, polycarbonate, recycled plastics, aluminum and wood, while steel and concrete use is minimized.

Concrete blocks connected by steel plates and shaped in order to hold the adjacent plinth.

Wooden cladding covers the plinths and I-Joist beams are used as structure of the floor

A layer of wood protects the floor beams and rockwool is laid in between them. Atop, wooden boards support the structure of the floating floor

The inside box is made out of wooden beams (I-Joist) and connected to the outer one through squared shaped timber elements.

The insulation panel is fixed to the structure through the aluminum frame. Then, steel profiles and screws connect polycarbonate slabs.

The bamboo on the outside is connected to the wooden beams of the primary structure, hiding the polycarbonate box.

HOUSE FOR A PATRON

Course: Art of the plan - Masterproject II Year: 2014 - 2015 Professors: Ir. Renato Kindt/ Ir. Wouter Hilhorst

The course focuses on the making of the plan. Interior design, interior elevations and materials are the primary goals to achieve. Spaces are organized around the main core, embodied by the courtyard, which constantly features the interior space. Sculpturality and permeability of rooms are the main characteristics of the house. These, together with plays of light contribute at creating different experiences throughout the design. Different functions (private house, workshop and exhibition volume) are merged together: private and public realm coexist.

NEW NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ARCHITECTURE OF ROME

Course: graduation project - Bachelor Thesis University of Rome “La Sapienza”, faculty of Architecture Ludovico Quaroni Year: 2012 - 2013 Professors: Arch. Orazio Carpenzano/ Arch. Alessia Maggio This project aims to provide a more dynamic structure to the Flaminio district in Rome. Although this area has been a catalyst for cultural activities since the 60’s, it is characterized by a strong urban fragmentation. The goal of the New National Library of Architecture of Rome is to establish a connection throughout the neighborhood and stimulating exchange within its adjacent zones, lending a sense of unity to the urban fabric and finally becoming an aggregation point itself.

Eindhoven Metropolis Challenge (Eindhoven) 2nd place Year: 2016 Team: Andrea Somma Caterina Corsi Federico Iezzi Kiana Aryankia Tamar Tsanava The challenge consists of providing the committee with a design, within 24 hours, representing the city of Eindhoven in 2066. Eindhoven - city as a machine, is a new concept of growth where living space develops in proportion with the economy and services of the city. By merging the high-tech with the existing bucolic realities, city keeps a human scale and grows vertically in layers. From the bottom to the top, the buildings become self-sufficient units which provide the needs of the citizens living on the top part of the city. 76
