TIMELESS TAPESTRY Catalogue
Embracing Namibia’s Enchanted Narrative
Embark on a journey through the evocative landscapes of Namibia, a nation poised on the cusp of global recognition and celebrated as a haven by visitors worldwide. In "TIMELESS TAPESTRY," the inaugural exhibition of 2024 at BELLHAUS Atelier & Galerie, we delve into the profound connection between the local hearts and the captivating homeland that is Namibia.
Commencing on Thursday, 15th February at 18:00, with the official opening at 18:30, this exhibition endeavors to rekindle a dormant patriotism, challenging locals to rediscover the inherent wonder of their magical land. Curated by Andrea Behnsen, the owner of BELLHAUS Atelier & Galerie, the showcase invites thirteen international artists to contribute their distinctive impressions of Namibia through a diverse range of mixed mediums.
In "TIMELESS TAPESTRY," witness the artistic interpretations of Amy Ayanda, ANHA, Cara Saven, David Ross, Gregg Price, John Bauer, Lucie De Moyencourt, Marilila Kyrtata, Marlene Neumann, Michael Chandler, Renee Rossouw, SomethingGood Studio, and WANDERLAND.
Andrea Behnsen, the visionary curator, selected these artists with the intention of reminding Namibians of their remarkable country, often overlooked by its own residents. The collaboration with international artists serves as a bridge to showcase the intrinsic beauty of Namibia through fresh eyes.
Many artists embraced unfamiliar mediums to capture the essence of Namibia. Fine art photographer David Ross suspended six gravity-defying mobiles, each portraying Namibia with splattered feather ends that dance like a sandstorm in the breeze. Renee Rossouw carved the country's contrasts into wood, capturing the drama of the Namib Desert with a youthful, dopamine-inducing approach.
Michael Chandler, known for painting ceramics, explored oil on canvas board, drawing inspiration from rocks as cultural fossil records. Chandler's series of nine paintings invite viewers, especially Namibians, to appreciate the simplicity of their homeland. Renowned ceramicist John Bauer's signature matchbox tile mosaics present the essence of Namibia in uncanny color palettes, emphasizing the magic of its endless space.
Cara Saven, collaborating with Andrea under Cara Saven 4 Decor, injected contemporary flair into table linen adorned with symbols of home, fostering conversations about Namibia's uniqueness. Interior designer Marilila Kyrtata, based in Greece, contributed artwork for some of the decor pieces, intricately examining overlooked details of Namibia.
Lucie De Moyencourt, an internationally acclaimed ceramic shell artist, crafted unique pieces mirroring the view from a small aircraft, capturing the geological wonders from above. BELLHAUS Atelier & Galerie, known for pushing artistic boundaries, presents "TIMELESS TAPESTRY" with a blend of collectible fine art and accessible pieces for art enthusiasts. Rather than seeking validation beyond borders, this exhibition encourages introspection, urging Namibians to draw inspiration from their own soil and stories as they grow outward.

The Salt Road
The Salt Road sparks a foreigner’s imagination; as a material engineer, I am fascinated by it. Unable to exist or persist in the climate of Cape Town, forming a preposterous idea. In the desert, however, the ingenuity and spirit of making it happen and being able to use the material at hand. Sea water and salt are used to navigate the environment. This idea sparks my curiosity and makes my heart burst. What if one built a salt hotel as spectacular as the ice hotel?
After the Rain
One spends much of their life waiting for rain, it is a metaphor through literature, poetry and conversation. Many a conversation is had with God about rain, dancing to beckon the deities above. We depend on rain and so the moment after the rain is a moment of silence, after the last shot in war is fired The relief of having survived and now there is a moment before life starts to grow again. The moment before the buds begin to form, a moment of pure joy.
When the wind has moved the Sand
This is both a destructive and constructive force. In clay and pottery, we love clay deposited by water or wind. When the wind moves, the dunes can engulf a road or reveal a house. A house buried for many years emerges out of a moving dune. There is something wonderful about how sand mummifies and preserves, how things are lost to the sand and how treasures are found. When the wind moves the sand, revealing a lake of diamonds, it temporarily becomes the richest place on earth, and then it is gone.

MICHAEL CHANDLER
Michael Chandler is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Cape Town. Known for his blue and white ceramic work and his fine, whimsical illustrations, Michael is also the mind and eye behind his eponymous studio-cum-gallery-cum-shop - Chandler House. Michael is an 'outsider’ artist; he was never been taught at an institution, but rather he studied Art History and much of his work is concerned around telling stories and histories, both worldly and personal and ones. With interests in botany, the esoteric, cooking, decorative arts and ancient history - to name a few, the nine paintings of rocks that he has painted for TIMELESS TAPESTRY speaks of his deep interest and reverence for the early indigenous people of Southern Africa, and the traces of their culture that they left behind.

The series of wooden carved paintings I made for TIMELESS
TAPESTRY attempt to capture the essence of the dry Namibian desert landscape. The slowness of carving embodied as silence, the purposeful minimal approach embodies the barren beauty, rich in contrast. The colours selected lends itself to a surreal approach in painting, highlighting the unfamiliar and magic that this land beholds.

"Our vision at Wanderland has always been to create a new platform for our artists to showcase their work. Their stories are told as their products are shared. What differentiates us from other art-into-design brands, is that we see the value in presenting the various artist's work as a collective. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts by creating an authentic new visual story of the South African creative landscape."
Wanderland Collaborates with South African artists to create textile treasures. Our products become storytellers in themselves, sharing the stories and artistic expression of the artists who created them.
OASIS SCARF:
"Oasis is inspired by the Namibian Landscape of sand and stark contrasts. The Matriarch African Elephant, The African Fish Eagle, A couple of African Giraffes and some small Steenbokkies are all taking some home rest at moment of cooling water." - Renée Rossouw
LINES DROUGHT:
“Line Drought was a series of 7 charcoal pencil drawings made during the height of the Cape Town drought in 2017. The scarcity of water and its relationship to the larger issue of global warming made me want to express the feelings around it in a very earthy palette, guided by more intuitive drawing that felt like a very long meditation. I drew non stop for 2 days, almost speechless.” - Renée Rossouw

"Informed by nature and shaped by hand. In the moment of forming a new piece, I use my senses, and respond instinctively to the clay. Inspiration has come from Butoh, a form of Japanese dance theatre, with a philosophy of finding the dance within.
The tea bowls , for me, have become a dynamic conversation with both colour and form. Each new bowl, takes a little from the previous one, and pushes ahead in the void. The colours relate to my experience of life at the coast, and high desert areas. According to Socrates, beauty is not the object of art, but the object of philosophy. Beauty is a way of achieving knowledge.
My practice then, is one of self discovery. I believe the tea bowls should draw you in, entice you to pick them up, explore the weight and texture, and find pleasure in the colour.

ARTIST-DESIGNED BLANKET - ‘DANCING TIGER’ X KHAKOON
This blanket was designed by Khakoon, multi-talented husband and wife musician-artists duo from Pretoria, South Africa Khakoon is home to a selection of tactile and earthy artworks, textiles, ceramics and posters all produced by the couple under the notion that “home is the future”.
Whether you snap up an album or an artwork, the spectrum of their creative output plays homage to their safe space where they create in tandem; he writes, she sings, he starts a painting & she finishes it, their process is nothing short of Incredible A collaboration was inevitable
“On our continued quest to embrace nature through art and craft, we ' ve been contemplating how the wild beast or 'tiger' that is life and the world around us, could be better navigated and perhaps even 'tamed' to the degree in which we have more time to spend with our loved ones, enjoying the outdoors, playing, dancing, singing, catching a fish, picking a flower, throwing a stone, or watching the sunset ” – Brendon Erasmus of Khakoon
ARTIST-DESIGNED BLANKET - ‘ELULA’ X LULAMA WOLF
This blanket was designed by Lulama ‘Wolf’ Mlambo, a 27-year-old visual artist who lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa 'Elula' translated means “The Easy One”. “The idea behind the blanket was to bring a sense of ease into ones existence at any time in their life, to implement rest and motivate that life can be simplified with more introspection, - Lulama Wolf “
A principal theme in Lulama’s work is space, spirituality and influences from vernacular architecture. She explores the human condition in extremely imaginative ways creating hyper visualized characters

DAVID ROSS
David Ross explores suspended sculptures also know as ‘mobiles’,influenced by his parents’ artistic roots in London’s vibrant art and interior design scene in the late 60’s & 70’s Surrounded by modernist art and furniture during his upbringing, he draws inspiration from kinetic art masters such as Jean Tinguely and Alexander Calder, as well as his father, John Alexander Ross, an industrial designer and avid mobile craftsman. Combining a childhood affinity for designing by hand and working with machined process and a passion for various raw materials like clay, paint, wood, and metal, David, with a career in photographing contemporary design and modern architecture, has developed two distinct mobile series.
Bright Mobile 001 / 002 / 003 (Medium)
The first series features vibrant shapes bursting with colour, attached to seemingly ‘floating’ brass rods. The colour palette is influenced by muted, dusty primary colours arranged in a spontaneous configuration.
Alexander Mobile 001 / 002 (Large)
In contrast, the second series showcases oxidised and patinated all-brass mobiles. The geometric shapes, derived by scissor snipping cardboard shapes instinctively, a take on subjective design interpretations, resembling organic forms like plants, leaves, and birdlife. The oxidative textures evoke weathered rocks, sea life, and shells. Balanced meticulously and once suspended, these mobiles create a tranquil, meditative atmosphere, especially in breezy spaces, inviting viewers to look up and experience the calming effect of their movement.

Marlene NeumannANHA
Terri Brown, the creative force behind ANHA, is a jewellery and accessories brand rooted in the vibrant city of Cape Town, South Africa. The inception of ANHA took place during the challenging times of the COVID lockdown, where I sought solace and escape through the avenue of creativity. What started as a personal endeavour to stay occupied and express myself blossomed into the beautiful journey that is ANHA.
ANHA boasts two distinctive collections, each a testament to my passion for craftsmanship and self-expression. The Mixed-Medium Collection is a lively fusion of polymer clay and exquisite acrylic finishes, while the Signature Collection exclusively features bespoke laser-cut acrylic. Every piece I create is a labor of love, from the initial design sketched on paper to the final touch of gold-plated finishes that bring it to life.
The process of creating these pieces is a deeply personal and fulfilling experience for me. I find joy in every step, from conceptualising ideas and mixing colours to achieve exclusive shades to the moment the pieces are baked and adorned with the finishing gold-plated touches. What began as a means of personal adornment soon transformed into a desire to share this empowering feeling with other women.
ANHA is more than just jewellery; it's a celebration of beauty, confidence, and completeness. Each piece is a reflection of my journey of self-discovery and creative expression. I started by making pieces that made me feel beautiful and confident, and soon realised the transformative impact they could have on others. Now, ANHA is an invitation for women to experience that same sense of empowerment when they wear my creations.
In essence, ANHA is a connection between me as the artist and the women who choose to adorn themselves with my pieces. It's a shared journey of self-discovery and expression, where each accessory becomes a unique statement of individuality and strength. I invite you to embrace the beauty within yourself through the artistry of ANHA, where every piece is not just an accessory but a reflection of your own unique story.
