BELLHAUS Atelier and Galerie presents HEALING HANDS, a group exhibition exploring themes of love, grief, and healing through the works of Marelize van Staden and Kudzanai Katerere. The exhibition delves into the transformative power of artistic creation by means of stone sculpture and lino printmaking.
KUDZANAI KATERERE
For Zimbabwean born sculptor Kudzanai Katerere, his stone artworks have always been rooted in a yearning for the healing power of love.
When the artist found stone sculpting, a prominent craft in his home country, the challenge to distinguish himself weighed heavily. In a dream the soft, round face of a woman was revealed, and his unique aesthetic was born. “Stone is a very patient material,” says Kudzanai. The repetitive and meditative action of chipping away at stone has taught him one of the most fundamental aspects of healing - patience.
Mentored by internationally acclaimed Namibian sculptor, Dorte Berner, Kudzanai has not only refined his practice, but learned that maternal love can exist in unconventional ways.

MARELIZE VAN STADEN
HEALING HANDS is linked to the therapeutic effects of making, for artist
Marelize van Staden. Her artistic journey was spurred on by a siren call from her psyche. When her husband passed away, Marelize’s world came to a standstill. It was through crafting lino prints, initially in black and white, and later the addition of gold leaf inserts, that her healing could take place. Many of Marelize’s lino prints show carvings that would conventionally be negative space. These etches add texture and dimension to her work while communicating that scars and bruises are to be loved, in order to heal.
