Regents renew charter school sponsorship HANNAH PARENT STAFF WRITER
SoutheastMissouriStateUniversity sponsorsLiftforLifeAcademy,a charterschoolthatwasthefirstofits kindtoopenintheSt.Louisarea. Theschoolenrollsabout575 studentsandhasbeensponsoredby Southeastsince2000.Itstartedoffasa middleschoolandexpandedthrough the12thgradeinfallof2011. TheSoutheastBoardofRegents approvedanextensiononOct.19fora five-yearcontractwithLiftforLifethat willcontinueSoutheast’ssponsorship oftheorganization. VicepresidentoftheBoardof RegentsJimLimbaughsaidtheboard chosetosponsortheLiftForLife Academybecauseitwasgoingtobe governedbyavolunteerboardof directorsmadeupofcommunity leaders,ratherthanaprivatemanagementcompanylikeotherproposed charterschools. “Southeastwantedtogetinvolved increatinganacademicpathwayforSt. Louisstudents,”Limbaughsaid.“Forty percentofourenrollmentcomesfrom themetroSt.Louisarea,soitwas definitelyagoodinvestmentforusto getinvolvedwithLiftforLife.” Limbaughsaidthemostimportant goalistogetstudentsexcitedabout postsecondaryeducation,buttheyare notrequiredtoattendSoutheast. “PublicschoolsinSt.Louisare toughandtheeducationaloutcomes arenotalwaysverygood,”Limbaugh said.“Charterschoolsaremore structured,sothereislessdistraction. startedattendingLiftforLifeinthe sixthgrade.Shesaidthatherexperienceswithpublicschoolsbeforethat wererockybecausetherewasa differentprincipaleveryyearatthe publicschoolsheattended. “Irememberwhenmymom enrolledmeinLiftforLife,”Wagner said.“Myfirstyeartheretheywere alreadygivingusatourofSoutheast Universityandencouragingustothink aboutcollege.Idon’tthinkI’dbeata universitywithoutLiftforLife’s encouragement.Publicschoolsdon’t offerthesameopportunities.” AccordingtoDr.BillEddleman,vice provostanddeanoftheSchoolof GraduateStudies,LiftforLiferecieves $60,000foradministrativeneedsfrom thestateofMissourithanksto Southeast’ssponsorship. ThefounderofLiftforLife,Marshall Cohen,saidthatstudentswhoattend theacademycomefromSt.Louis’ poorestneighborhoods. “LiftforLifeAcademyhopestogive parentsanotherchoice,”Cohensaid. “WefocusongettingSt.Louisstudents academicallycaughtup.Wearemore hands-onthanpublicschoolsand placeemphasisonpostsecondary education.Weofferanotherchoicefor parents.” AccordingtoLiftforLife’swebsite, 95percentofthestudentsatthe academyareAfrican-Americanand over90percentofstudentslivein householdswithincomesbelowthe nationalpovertylevel. Theacademy’swebsitesaysthat mostnewstudentsenrollwithreading andmathskills1-3yearsbelowtheir gradelevel.LiftforLife’sattendance ratewas95percentinfall2011,as opposedto86percentintheSt.Louis PublicSchools. Recentresearchhasbeendoneon theeffectivenessofcharterschool
educationandhowitcomparestothe publicschoolsystemintheSt.Louis area. Anot-for-profitleadership organizationcalledFocusSt.Louisdid astudyon17charterschoolsintheSt. Louisareaduringthe2010-2011school year. FocusSt.Louisconcludedthat “charterschoolscanprovideapowerful modelforimprovingeducational optionsinlow-performingschool districts.However,accordingtothe latestdata,whilemanycharterschools areperformingbetterthanthe traditionalSt.Louispublicschools, noneofthe17charterschoolsmeet statewideacademicstandards.” Thereportemphasizedthattest scoresarenottheonlywaytojudge charterschools’performance.Itsaid oneproblemwithMAPtestingisthatit doesnottakeintoaccountwhere studentsstarted.Astudentmayhave improvedimmenselybutstillnotmeet statestandards.Thereportalsostated thatcharterschoolsarestillthebetter alternativetopublicschools,even thoughtheystillneedimprovementin someareas. LimbaughissurethatsinceLiftfor Lifenowaccommodatesstudentsuntil theygraduate,itwillbeabletokeepits students’educationmoreconsistent. “Expandingthecurriculumthrough highschoolisimportantbecausethe middleschoolstudentswon’thaveto gobackto[public]schoolinSt.Louis andpossiblygetlostintheshuffle,” Limbaughsaid.“Hopefullythe students’experiencesat[LiftforLife Academy]willgivethemthedesireto continuetheireducation.This expansionisabigchallenge,andthe potentialissignificant.Growthfor growth’ssakeisnotalwaysbetter.What wearemuchmoreinterestedinis outcome.”

AfteranaccidentinJulythatresultedinabrokenbackand brokenwrist,SoutheastMissouriStateUniversitysoccer coachHeatherNelsonwasexpectedtomisstheentire2012 season.Nelson’shusbandandassociatecoachPaulNelson becametheinterimcoachinherabsence.Nelsonsaidthatit wasadifficulttimeforherbecausetheteamisherextended family.Butshewascomfortablethattheplayerswereingood handswiththestaff. “Itwasdifferentwithoutcoachbeingthere,”sophomore centermidfielderToreyByrdsaid.“Paulrunsthepractices,andcoachwillgivesecondopinions,soitwasweirdnot havingherthere.Wetriedtostayconnectedwithherwhileshe wasgone.” ButonSept.9,seniorsoccerplayerMegHerndonwasplacedinintensivecareafteracollisiononherscooter.Though Nelsonwasnotmedicallyclearedtoreturn,shefeltthather placewaswithherteam,andshetravelledwiththeplayersto Memphis,Tenn. AccordingtoZacNickless,a SoutheastalumnusandformerplayerfortheRedhawksrugbyclub,the clubplaysothercollegiateteamsin tournaments. “Ifwehaveanymatcheshere,wewill playattheOsageCenter,”Nicklesssaid. “However,themainfacetoftheRedhawksteamistoplayincollegiatetournaments.Theywillactuallybeplaying inoneDec.1atSIUEdwardsville.” Therugbyseasonisplayedyearround.Duringagame,15membersper teamplayonthefield. Thayersaidbothteamsareoneinthe same,butplayingfortheScorpionsisa littledifferent. “Thefactthatthepeoplewhothe Scorpionsplayareoldermeansthat theyaremoreexperienced,”Thayer said.“Thismakesthemmorestrategic withtheirplays.” TheScorpionsfinishedtheirfall seasononNov.3andexpecttobegin anotherseasonnextspring. “AlotofAmericansportsfocuson theindividual,likeinfootballthereisa runningbackorquarterback—there’s singlestars,”Thayersaid.“Inrugbya lotoftimesit’smoreabouttheteam, likehowtheteamputstogethera drivetoscore.Whoeverscoresdoesn’t getthecredit,whoeversetthatpersonupwithapassgetsthecredit.It’s justmoreofateamgamewithalotof comradeship.”

EnglisheducationmajorsAnnieHolzenandSheaMoorearebothwriting novelswhilealsobalancingschool, extracurricularactivities,includingthe co-educationalnationalservicefraternityAlphaPhiOmega,aswellas jobs.Theyworkontheirnovelsduring breakstheyhavethroughouttheday andatnightbeforetheygotobed. Mooresaidsheisreallyexcitedtobe apartofthecommunitytheyhavebuilt aroundthis“insaneidea.”

International฀Education฀Week฀was฀established฀in฀1990.฀Southeast฀has฀celebrated฀it฀off฀ and฀on฀over฀the฀years.฀This฀year,฀it฀will฀include฀ more฀events฀than฀last฀year,฀when฀there฀was฀ limited฀programming. According฀to฀Suzanne฀McKinney,฀assistant฀ director฀of฀international฀programming฀in฀the฀ Department฀of฀International฀Education฀and฀ Services,฀International฀Education฀Week฀is฀not฀ only฀for฀international฀students,฀but฀also฀for฀ people฀who฀are฀interested฀in฀learning฀about฀ other฀cultures,฀studying฀abroad,฀religion,฀ dance฀and฀music. “International฀education฀has฀had฀a฀big฀ importance฀on฀this฀campus,â€?฀McKinney฀said. McKinney฀decided฀to฀reinstate฀International฀Education฀Week฀based฀on฀her฀previous฀ experiences฀as฀a฀graduate฀student฀at฀Appalachian฀State฀University. “Last฀year฀we฀brought฀it฀with฀limited฀programming,â€?฀McKinney฀said.ŕ¸€â€œWe฀did฀Student฀Presentation฀Night,฀International฀Social฀ Hour.฀This฀year฀we฀are฀trying฀to฀expand฀it฀and฀ encompass฀the฀full฀week฀with฀different฀types฀ of฀activities฀that฀will฀hopefully฀pique฀the฀interests฀of฀different฀groups฀on฀campus.â€? McKinney฀said฀she฀works฀to฀integrate฀international฀students฀with฀the฀campus฀and฀open฀ people’s฀eyes฀to฀the฀big฀world฀that฀is฀out฀there. “We’re฀always฀trying฀to฀expose฀people฀to฀new฀and฀different฀things,â€?฀McKinney฀ said.ŕ¸€â€œSometimes฀there฀are฀misunderstandings฀about฀cultures,฀whether฀that’s฀American฀culture,฀Chinese฀culture,฀Muslim฀culture.฀ ‌฀There฀are฀certain฀perceptions฀that฀occur฀ because฀of฀the฀media.â€? “I฀feel฀here฀Americans฀don’t฀know฀about฀

AccordingtotheOfficeofStudentConduct andInterfraternityCouncilPresidentRyan Manning,theorganizationsareSigmaChi,Pi KappaAlphaandSigmaTauGamma. Manningsaidhedidnotknowwhythese organizationshadbeenputonprobation. Socialprobationisapunishmentforfraternitiesandsororitiesthatdonotadheretothe bylawsoftheirorganizationortheuniversity’s codeofconductforstudents. “Anumberofthingscangetanorganizationonsocialprobation,”Manningsaid.“It canbeunderagedrinking,hazing,dirtyrushing,beingdisrespectfulatphilanthropy events,etc.” Decisionsofsocialprobationaremadeby SoutheastofficialsthroughJudicialAffairs. Onceanorganizationisputonsocial
probation,representativesfromnational chaptersoftheorganizationswillcometo Southeastforamembershipreviewtoevaluateindividualmembers. ClubRed,aneworganizationoncampus, willassisttheSEMOAmericanRedCross withitsmissiontohelpvictimsofdisasters andhelpprevent,prepareforandrespondto emergencies. KelseyBoeser,aseniorstudyingpublic relationsandadvertisingatSoutheastMissouriStateUniversity,startedtheclubon campusandisthepresidentofClubRed. “IstartedmyinternshipwiththeSEMO AmericanRedCross,andIdidn’tknowwhat theydidandeveryoneassumesthattheyjust doblooddrives,butitssomuchmorethan that,”Boesersaid.“Theysolelydependon volunteers,andespeciallyatthesetimeswith HurricaneSandy,thestudentbodycouldreallybeutilizedgettinginvolved.”

What part of the East Coast are you located? IliveinStamford,Conn.,whereIwork.It’sin thesouthwesternregionofConnecticut.It’s aboutanhournortheastofNewYorkCity,and I’mabouta15-minutedrivefromthecoastof LongIslandSound.
Was your area expected to get the efects of the hurricane? Oh,definitely.Therewerewarningsallover thetelevision.Theyweretrackingthestorm forawhile.Weknewitwasgoingtohit.But sinceI’veneverbeeninahurricanebefore,I honestlydidn’tknowwhattoexpect.Iwasn’t thatworriedaboutituntilaboutadaybefore ithitwhenmyfamilykepttextingmeaskingif Iwasreadyforit.
What kinds of precautions were you told to take, and did you do anything to prepare for it? InthebeginningIhadn’treallypreparedat all.IhadafewcandlesandthoughtIwasset. Itwasn’tuntilaboutadayortwobeforethe stormthatIreallypaidattentiontothewarningsonthenews.Thenewsiswhatreally worriedme.ItwasonTVconstantly,soIfinallyfiguredoutitwasabiggerdealthanIwas makingitouttobe.Ihavesomefamilyfriends inMiddletown,Conn.,thathavelivedhere forover10years,sotheytookmeshopping andtoldmeexactlyhowIneededtoprepare. Itwasn’tuntiladaybeforethehurricanethat IrealizedIcouldbewithoutpowerandwater forawhile.

What did you experience when the hurricane inally hit? Honestly,whereIlivenothingreallyhappened.Therewerehighwinds,about40-50 mph,withsomewindgustsof90mph, butthatwasthescariestthingthathappened.Theycalledforanevacuationofsome ofthecoastalstreets,butIwasfinewhereI was.Over50percentofStamfordlostpower though,soIwasveryluckytohaveitthe entiretime.

LAW Enforcement Academy STUDENTS ARE NOW OFFERED FOUR SIX-HOUR COURSES IN ADDITION TO THEIR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER CERTIFICATION

SoutheastMissouriStateUniversityhas followedotheruniversitiesandbegunto offercollegecredittostudentswhoenrollin theLawEnforcementAcademylocatedat Southeast. Thestudentscantaketheclassesinadditiontoearningfullcertificationtobecomea lawenforcementofficerinthestateofMissourifromthePeaceOfficersStandardsand TrainingCommissionthroughtheMissouri DepartmentofPublicSafety. “It’sprettyexciting,”saidCarlKinnison,directoroftheLawEnforcementAcademy,full-timeprofessoratSoutheastand formerchiefoftheCapeGirardeaupolice department.“I’mtheonetryingtomakeit happen.” ThosestudyingtobecomelawenforcementofficerswhoareenrolledintheLaw EnforcementAcademy’s720-hourprogram willqualifyforthe24hoursofcredit. Thecreditwillgotowardthestudent’s completionoftheir720hoursaswellasearningtheirbachelor’sdegreefromSoutheast,if
theyhavesignedupforthecourses. Therearefoursix-hourcoursesmembers willtake,andtheycantakethemduringwhicheversemestertheparticipantwantstotake themoverthecourseoffulfillingtheir720 hoursthroughtheAcademy. TheclassesareLE199LawEnforcementI, LE299LawEnforcementII,LE399LawEnforcementIIIandLE499LawEnforcementIV. Peoplewhowanttobelawenforcement officersdonothavetohaveacollegedegree, buttheydohavetoattendastate-accredited academy. AccordingtoDr.MichaelBrown,professor emeritusoftheCriminalJusticedepartment, inthepaststudentswithadegreewould applyforalawenforcementofficerjoband thenfindtheyhadtohavecertification fromanacademytogetthatjob.Now,studentsintheacademywhoalsowanttoearn abachelor’sdegreecanapplythe24hoursof collegecredittowardthebachelor’sdegree andtheirhoursatthelawenforcement academy. Studentswhowanttoenrollintheclasses wouldhavetofirstenrollinthelawenforcementacademyandthensignupforthefour classesthroughtheSoutheastbanner. Theacademyrunsfor18weeksinthe spring,fromJanuarytoMay. Theclasseswillbetaughtface-to-facein classrooms,asmandatedbyMissouri’slaws regardingbasictrainingclasses. Thesearen’ttypicalcollegeclasses,Kinnisonsaid. Kinnisonsaidthefourclasseswould appealtopeoplewhowanttoworkin
municipalities,forexample. “We’vegotfourstudentsexpressingan interestintheclassesalready,”Kinnisonsaid. Kinnisonsaidtheclassesshouldbetaught startinginJanuary2013. Otherschoolshaveseensuccesswithsimilarprograms. TheUniversityofMissourihasanacademy butnotaspecificcriminaljusticeprogram. Studentscantakesimilarcoursesthrough otheruniversitieslikeColumbiaCollege,but itcountstowardtheirhoursattheacademyat

DruryUniversityinSpringfield,Mo.,offers students18hoursofcollegecredittowardthe required700hoursattheirlawenforcement academy.Thecreditsarethecoreclassesfor theAssociateofScienceinLawEnforcement,

asopposedtoelectivecoursesonly,according toTonyBowers,thedirectoroftheLawEnforcementAcademyatDrury. “Wearestartingtoseemoregraduatesof theacademycontinuetheirprocesstoward theAS[AssociateofScience]andtheBS [BachelorofScience]degree,”Bowerssaid. Brownwasinstrumentalintheprocessthat begantwoyearsago. Hehelpedgetthefourclassestoqualifyfor collegecredittomakeiteasierforstudentsto graduatewiththeirdegreewhileattending theacademy,insteadofdoingsomuchofit separately. Brownbelievestherearefourthingsstudentscandotohaveabetterchanceofsecuringajob. Studentsshouldearnacriminaljustice degreesotheyhavethecredentials,getan internshipincriminaljusticesotheycan gethands-onexperience,haveacleanbackgroundtopassthebackgroundcheckand attendastateaccreditedacademytobea licensedofficer. “Ican’tstresstheimportanceofkeeping yournosecleanandpassingthatbackground check,”Brownsaid.
