Describe your signature style My style is a fusion of contemporary and classic with an eclectic slant. Symmetry is prominent in most of my interiors.
What should readers know about the business? With over 25 years design experience I am one of the most longstanding interior designers in Scotland.
What’s been your biggest design challenge and how was it overcome? Working on new-build projects from the ground up – being part of a team of specialists, including architects, and working together to create a bespoke, finished home. Overcoming and working within specific timelines has been a challenge at times; however, as part of a team everyone is aiming for the same end goal.
How does your business differ from others on the market? My relationship with clients is the most important aspect of what I do. Tuning into clients’ needs, lifestyle and personality is key. I have many longterm clients who come back to work with me as there is a positive connection and trust between us. This results in the best design.
What’s exclusive and unique to the business and why? Carol Yates Design offers a strong bespoke element and a unique and personalised design service from creating furniture, lighting and cabinetry to being involved in different parts at the build stage.

Where do you gather inspiration from? Holidays are a key inspiration for me. Influences tend to inspire certain projects – colours of the South of France to city styles of Paris and NYC. I love Italy, especially the south – a little piece of it usually finds its way into my interiors, especially in my home. What words of wisdom can you offer potential clients ? Invest in a key piece of furniture, something you really love. It can be the starting point of the design process. Describe your signature style Designworks does not have a signature style as each project is assessed individually, either as an architectural or interior solution or both, which then evolves to the satisfaction of our clients before it proceeds with works on site. What’s been your biggest design challenge and how was it overcome? Being involved in Scotland’s millennium project to restore the interior finishes of the Great Hall at Stirling Castle – sourcing, selecting and making the 9m-high feature curtains. The decorative trimmings alone weighed approximately half a ton! What’s exclusive and unique to the business and why? Designworks provides a bespoke and personal interior design service working in conjunction with its own architectural practice to create imaginative and inspiring residential and commercial projects throughout the UK and

abroad – all to suit clients’ requirements and budgets. What should readers know about the business? Designworks is a family business established over 40 years ago, now with two generations involved. It is made up of a professional interior design team and architectural practice (principally interior design-led) with a large showroom and offices in Glasgow’s west end. How does your business differ from others in the market? We are interior designers and architects but also have a showroom on two floors with furniture, lighting and accessories together with a vast selection of fabric and wallpaper books. All clients visiting the showroom will receive advice from professional interior designers. Where do you gather inspiration from? We constantly research progressive interior trends both in the UK and abroad and to this end visit various interior design exhibitions in Europe and world wide every year. What words of wisdom can you offer potential clients? It is never too early to discuss an interior design project; however, clients invariably leave it too late. In ten words, good design is… A combination of client and Designworks involvement exceeding client expectation.

Describe your signature style We prefer a traditional style with classic lines, calm colours and quality fabric. The result is an atmosphere of relaxed opulence with an easy living feel. It’s important to us that the space not only looks beautiful but is practical for the client’s needs. What’s been your biggest design challenge and how was it overcome? Often the brief can be completely unrealistic to the space in hand; for example, creating a minimalist look in a period property. It can be done to fabulous effect with careful planning and creative design. What’s exclusive and unique to the business and why? The passion for the business is still there after 20 years. The shop is always changing with accessories arriving every week to complement any scheme we are working on at the time. We source from all over the world to get the right piece.

Describe your signature style? A combination of materials with earthy tones and whites, alongside textured elements of wood and stone. The feel of the material is as important as the look. Glass splashbacks bring depth and feature in many of our kitchens as well as clever lighting. Less is definitely more and rather than introduce layers of embellishment we look for good function and a form that sits comfortably in its space.
What should readers know about the business? Our range of products allows us to reach out to a broad spectrum of clients; and we can offer budget-conscious solutions right through to luxury installations. Our multifaceted approach to each project gives you flexibility to choose from a design and supply solution right through to a fully managed service from concept to completion. What’s been your biggest design challenge and how was it overcome? Without doubt the development of our 5000 sq ft. studio in the southside of Glasgow, which occupies an industrial building with 6m-high ceilings. To maintain the feeling of space and height, without it being cold and unattractive, required consideration. We chose ceiling rafts to house warm lighting, creating an inviting environment. Partitions allow you to see beyond them, recreating the feeling of being at home.
How does your business differ from others in the market? Years of experience and knowledge mean we can guide customers by listening and understanding their requirements. We offer much more than off-the-shelf products. We offer style, bespoke design, great value and a first-class service. We strive to make a positive difference to the way you live; after all, happy customers are what make us successful.

Our team are exclusive and unique, always taking time to listen and understand what’s required, and thinking about the way your space is to be used. Where do you gather information from ? In spring we were in Italy at Europe’s largest furniture trade fair, where the emphasis was on industrial elements and metals. The past also provides inspiration; such as Frank Lloyd Wright and the Bauhaus movement. What words of wisdom can you offer potential clients? Whether you are remodelling an existing space or adding an extension, make sure you have a broad spectrum of textures and colours to choose from and style that suits you. Describe your signature style Elegant, classical, simple and above all comfortable. We design traditional, contemporary and eclectic interiors to suit our clients’ tastes. We love colour even if that means 15 shades of taupe. We have high expectations of all our trades to produce beautifully executed interiors wherever they may be. What has been your biggest design challenge and how was it overcome? Two new-build villas in Lagos, Nigeria. The clients were great fun, but the logistics a nightmare. The soft furnishings were of the highest quality, largely thanks to our team of upholsterers and track fitters. They travelled from the UK, and the whole project was delivered on time and budget. What’s exclusive and unique to the business and why? We have to climb inside people’s lives. This can be disconcerting for our clients, so we balance creativity, sympathy and practicalities. Experience has taught us that it’s no good if a place looks stunning if it doesn’t work day to day. What should readers know about the business? We plan, design and deliver all manner of properties from large country houses to town

Sometimes it only takes a small hook to provide inspiration for a whole project, so it might be a colour, an object, a picture, a piece of fabric, the architecture of the building or the view – and then again it comes back down to instinct. What words of wisdom can you offer potential clients? Be honest and realistic. We know it is hard for a client to discuss the budget for a project, but much harder for the designer to design and deliver the right type of interiors without an idea of the amount the client is prepared to pay. Be realistic about the timeframe, particularly when planning consents may be involved, and respect your designer’s responses on both. In ten words… good design is Thoughtful, elegant, arresting, innovative, unobtrusive, practical, long-lasting, thorough, aesthetically pleasing.

Describe your signature style? We’re an independent Scottish company with our roots placed in traditional hand-built cabinet making since our inception 28 years ago. In the last decade we’ve entered into a more contemporary market, applying the same handcrafted techniques to our bespoke cabinetry to achieve a unique fusion of clean-lined artisan furniture. What’s been your biggest design challenge and how was it overcome? Designing our showrooms. Selecting a style that epitomises exactly what we do isn’t easy. As our portfolio is diverse with each project tailored to suit the individual user, it was strange not to have that component informing the design process. Instead, our decisions are informed by the character of the properties whilst grasping the rare opportunity to indulge in everything that we find inspirational and aspirational.

Encapsulating this as a new concept within a competitive luxury brand market was a challenge, to offer something innovative and different to discerning clients with a more eclectic taste. Describe your signature style Every Strathearn floor is original, the materials are outstanding and the craftsmanship is impeccable. What’s been your biggest design challenge, and how was it overcome? One of our heritage projects in Northumberland Street. The years had really taken a toll on the traditional townhouse’s subfloors, leaving them uneven and bulging. Our task was to carry out extensive repairs and restore a strong, stable base to ensure the new flooring would look wonderful and last for another few centuries – at the very least. The subfloor was key to this project as we were installing oak parquet with a bespoke white oil finish. What’s exclusive and unique to the business, and why?
