Park of Innovation XXI century TEAM: individual project
Everything starts with the subscription to the Elop*6 project, a teaching, learning and service-providing platform focused on transdisciplinary and transcultural problem-solving processes in the field of built and social environments. This workshop counts on the partecipation of students from different university with the same goal to design a defined task. This year title is Crossroads - Crossfunctions and the host university is Stanford, in California. The elop* platform represents a pool of competences. The platform brings together specialists who recognize the need of transdisciplinary and transcultural approaches in academic learning and teaching as well as in practiceto develop robust solutions for a sustainable development and to create graduates who qualify themselves by a broad respect for neighbouring disc plines. It brings together faculty members, students, industry partners and further interest groups. 8

The task - It is to undertake a full study of the area and make a proposal for what a 21st Century Research Center really is. Shall this land be used exclusively for office or shall it be an 18-hour place vibrant with retail, office, services and housing or shall it be something in between or something new. Another element to take under consideration is the digital revolution has overtaken the production approaches of yesterday and ushered in a new type of working environment. The site - Recently a piece of campus land at the edge of campus and bordering downtown, Palo Alto, has been suggested for large-scale development. The area is placed in between two very important arterial infrastructure, the Caltrain line and El Camino Highway. Due to this condition, nowadays the area is mostly unused and the activities present on the site are not part either of Stanford system either of Palo Alto dynamics.
TOWER VIEW
PARK of INNOVATION XXI century
The project - The main concept that leads all the researchs and studies done in the time I worked on my thesis is the idea that a research park in the XXI century has to find its power and its starting point in the connection and interation between different people and different ideas. The prototype of private offices independent one from the other is not suitable for innovation. Instead the creation of mixed and common space helps the dynamics of a XXI research park.

Parasite - After some weeks of work, the idea to introduce an element that connects all the element of the project bursts into the project and my studies try to understand the effect that this element could have on the entire project. I work to discover the potentiality of this parasite element into the functional program of the area. It has to be the most important element of the project and it has to be the place of interaction between people and ideas. Porosity - After many tries and different hypotesis, I decide that the tower is organized according to one main function: housing. It is designed both for Stanford student both for start-up users that, in this way. can concentrate day and night working on their projects. Not to forget the importance given to the space for interaction the parassite element develop along the entire tower height organizing the public area inside the tower. Subdivision - The study goes back trying to analize the single compenents of the tower. It is composed principal by the flats and the parasite. The agglomeration of the previous hypotesis was not succesfull because it created a series of hybrid spaces where there was not clear the difference and the relationship betwenn the two main elements. Now with the subdivision of flats in separated cells the tower system is clearer and the connection spaces acquire a better interest.

Water bridge or pedestrian river TEAM: individual proejct The Golden Horn is a water creek in the middle of the city of Istanbul. Through the centuries it has played many differents roles in Instabul history, firstly representing the boundary between the occidental and the oriental communities; then, in the XX century, it became one of the most important harbour area in the Mediterrean Sea. Nowadays the Golden Horn has lost its own identity changing in a desert land functionless. The industrial buildings have been abandoned and the green areas realized by the municipality are not yet perceived as pleasant places by the inhabitants. The result, today, is an empty inside the dense tissue of a 18 milion people city; the water, instead of having a social power, is perceived as an element to escape from. One of the best opportunities in Istanbul is, at this time, totally wasted.
20
21

22
The project aims to a complete requalification of the Golden Horn area trying to push people to face and interact again with the water. The title, Upside-down: water bridge or pedestrian river, expresses the wish to investigate and develop the water potentialities in everyday life.
23
Along a pedestrian passage places under the water level, people could walk from one side to the other of the Golden Horn and live a unique experience through a serie of stages hosting small gardens, skate park and basket field, rest area, exhibition and performing area. The interisting aspect of this project is that all these activites are perceived through the filter of water, giving a new prespective and a new value to usual activities.

GARDANELLA village Multipurpose centre renovation
TEAM: andrea riva || rodrigo bandini || alessandro bonizzoni || nicola campri Towards a coherent strategy, a smart project the “Gardanella” center has already a wide and varied offer, the aim of the project is therefore to harmonize and improve the product in a specific, mesurable, realistic and achievable way. In addition to intervene on the built in order to increase its energy efficiency, the project itself consists of a circular path that encompasses the entire park. Made of eco-friendly materials it acts to reactivate the center leading people to live the lake, the real exceptional “main character” of the club. “The ring” as well as being a narrative fil rouge, acquires the function of a teaching tool and guide to discover the countless species of trees in a park that looks more like a real botanical garden. Finally, the new activities have been carefully inserted without interfering with those already present in order to implement even more the contact with the nature.

In the centre of Milan a big area surrounding the Garibaldi train station is the fulcrum of an important urban transformation. A strip of land included between viale Pasubio and viale Francesco Crispi is the site choosen to design the museum of modern art of Milan. The area is strongly oriented East-West and the two edges have different conditions; the northern one faces a urban system composed by small streets and historical houses; on the other side a congested road isolates the side from the urban environment creating a strong boundary. The museum have an area of around 4500 mq and the remaining area has been planned as a city park in the middle of a dense urban tissue. The building is divided in the wings: one designed for the permanent collection of Dan Flavin, the other one for the temporary exhibitions. The entire complex hosts also a bookshop, a cafeteria and an auditorium. 38

A NEW CENTRE in MILAN Student housing and children library
TEAM: andrea riva || benedetta omarchi
The project aims to develop and renew a big unused area placed in the centre of Milan; a strip connecting Piazza Missori to via Torino facing both historical buldings and new constructions. The goal is to realize a children library and a universitary residence creating a general plesasnt design of public squares and green spaces. The residental tower is organized as a series of duplex placed around a big void that lights the central foyer. The scheme is replyed three time every two floors hosting 18 units. The tower, inserted in a dense tissue of historical buidings, forms a new landmark in the city skyline underlining its importance in the urban dynamics. The Biba library faces, instead, the axes development completing the street flux orientation.

DOPPIO P AR C O JANUARY 2012 - university project
DOPPIO PARCO Augusta-Syracuse analysis TEAM: class project
This study consists of a strip of land bounded on the east by the Mediterranean Sea, on the west by the SS114, on the north by the SP3 and on the south by the SS124 and the SP14. The area, for a total of 105 km2, includes four different municipalities: Augusta, Melilli, Priolo Gargallo and Syracuse. The population in this area is 185.556. Due to the importance that characterized Sicily during the Greek period, the entire region is marked characterized by important archeological findings: the famous ruins of Syracuse with the Euryalus Castle, but also the lesser known cities of Thapsos and Megara Hybleas, are rooted settlements that for centuries have provided connections on the territory. The area, un the early 50’s, had become industrialized, later than other countries of the continent, and was one of the centers of the Italian economic and industrial expansion. 50
51
Andrea Riva PORTFOLIO
52
Today the area us a complex example of territorial organization in the Sicilian landscape. A place that is related to prehistoric conncetive tissues, “modern” and ancient settlements and heavy industries, 50% of which area bandoned and without a restoration project, is hard to fully comprehend. An area where the illegal building practice is so rooted that can be able to build a huge shopping mall at the foot of the Euryalus Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a difficult and complex challenge to deal with. Going through these areas was like diving into another world, fascinating and scary at the same time: a sublime experience, in the sense of the Burkian term. A 20 km long continous system that follows the same logic of expansion, which at night turns into a “provincial” Manhattan. After the analytical work carried out during the year, we have come to an awareness of the characteristics that this area has and the need for an intervention that does not change the state of affairs in terms of landscape images. The aim is therefore to use the existing declining and its latent fascination in all of its possible components, starting with the attraction of new employment related to the productive fields, until the interest for the landscape and local heritage. Our proposal is based not so much on a big scale and massive intervention, but on the desire to make a recovery that does not distort the shape of the existing reality, rather accentuating the particular characteristics of the history and memory layers.

COMPOUND Beyond Entropy
TEAM: andrea riva || nicola campri alberto cavallari To design a health center in Tanzania, in the middle of African continent, is a big challenge. The difficults become even bigger if the aim is to combine the needs of an hospital with the choice to build with raw-earth techinques, so as to develop a solution that is adapt to the available resources. The project starts from the idea of developing the local concept of compound creating a series of small modules that could be combined in the best solution possible. This choice, other than guarantee flexibility for further expansions, allows to create private and confortable settings satisfying both the sanitary requirements and the need of patients and helpers that are used to spend all the recovery in the hospital centre.

THE COMPOUND _ The term is derived from the alteration of the word in the Malay language Kampong. The compound is an aggregate housing that is built around a fence, the architectural gesture least to delimit a space. the evolutionary process sees the gradual replacement of individual buildings with a circular housing complexes able to join each other and adapt to the perimeter of the fence.

KAROSTA
The sublime in the socialist city TEAM: andrea riva || gregorio pecorelli
During the Soviet period, the Military Port was a closed territory, inacessible even to the civilians of Liepaja City. The military Port, which covers approximately one third of the total area of the Liepaja City in its northern part, is a miraculous, paradoxical and unique place not only in the history and architecture of Latvia, but the whole world. The environement her us a singular reflection of the interaction between Russian military elegance and Soviet militarism. The present Military Port is a special distrcit. It is no longer an army town, but a unified touristic site, inspiring creative people. The site is located in the heart of Karosta; it is currently accomodates a number of private garages and a public bus stop. It is surrounded with soviet brutalist style apartement blocks. St.Nicholas Chatedral us located in the south of the site.

Karosta is an utopia. An idea of city. It is the sublimation of the socialist city. In this Soviet port, buildings sink in emptiness and there is no density. Karosta is a metaphysics city, with absolute and rarefied spaces, that man cannot live. For this reason is a ghost town. Its monumentality is in its own residential slab buildings and in its empty spaces. Through the simple aggregation of these typologies on the perimeter of the plot you create something new to this urban fabric: an enclosure, a court. A concluded space not surrounded by vacuum, but which is delimiting it. The court isolates us from the context throwing people in an “other” condition. Moulding outdoor space, reassembling fragments of a confused memory. Golden domes of an Orthodox church sparkle far away. A multicultural center introvert that wants to be a beacon of artistic activity
among the ruins. Its simple spaces are designed for flexible use and its spacious foyers for performance. The large central void is a space in the city, for art and reflection. Outside, the dialogue with this sublime state of disrepair of the city is maintained. Bonjour Tristesse. A simple element relates to the context: the wall, the perimeter. A “Hortus conclusus”. Abandonment is a state of sublime in architecture. Man no longer exists. Architecture is itself, perfect and silent while time it’s freeing it from what is not needed. Ruin has a cultural value. Karosta is a city and a not-yet-city. Landscape left to its fate is fragile monument. The construction of a new equilibrium must not forget its most ancient past, and its more recent one. Reflect and do not forget an idea of city. Monument-Memento-Memory.

The spectacularity of a phenomenonis often more touching in the moment of its epiphany: thus the will to avoid the direct view of the Northern Lights, reserving the visual communication with the outside to few favoured points. Hence the decision to fragment the observatory in private alcoves transforms the individual contemplation into a moment of reflection. This item becomesa sounding board to an ultimate synesthetic experience. The plant becomes a simulacrum of a constellation organized under a systemof orbits,so as to establishan intrinsic relationship between theland-based nature of the building and its tension toward the sky. The lack of rigidity in the orientation of the volumes favors the relationship with the natural environment, achieved not by mimesis but by contrast. Through the friction between the completion of private spaces and magmatic fluid of social areas flows an exceptional idea of living the building. 76

TEAM: andrea riva || arch. fabrizio leoni arch. luca de stasio This project proposal is oriented to colonize the artifact Cavalcavia Bussa with a new mix of urban functions related to the themes of sustainable mobility, the design of the open space, customs and collective farming in the vicinity, in order to give rise to a transformative process that, giving the city a place obsolete, converts it into a fully-fledged piece of fabric vibrant, open, multi-sensory and socially inclusive. As in many cases of international success, an infrastructure underused or in an advanced state of physical deterioration and functional, is a potential engine of local development, a reserve for the future, an accelerator of urban events. So the Cavalcavia Bussa, the legacy of urban visions and hypertrophic muscle and will wreck interrupted, it offers a change from non-place of the mere crossing, poor senses and meanings, emerging centrality, regained a chapter of the mental maps of the citizens.

SCANDURRA STUDIO
The internship at Scandurra Studio was a 2 months full-time period of intense work. During that time I dealtwith different projects according to the office rhythm. The varierty of tasks helped me to discover different aspects of the office dynamics. During the period I spent there, I dealt with working drawings for the EXPO GATE pavillions and for a residential building renovation. In a second phase I worked on a competition announcement for a primary school in MIlan. My task included all the main aspects needed to start the design phase. I analyzed the announcement requirements underllining the critical points and I studied the regulation in force about school planning. After that first step, I moved into the design aspect, creating different possibities to approach the building site.
