The kitchen can be a fascinating place for young children. They see grown-ups working briskly in there, watch the steam rise from pots on the stove, and smell what’s on the menu that night. Even older kids might be intrigued by how baked goods and meals come together. It isn’t always convenient to invite them into the kitchen to help, but consider doing so when time allows.
Parents get something out of this kitchen togetherness, too. First, there’s the quality time you’ll share. Then there’s the pleasure of sitting down at the table together to enjoy what you’ve whipped up. Blueberry Muffins
DIRECTIONS

cup oatmeal

cup blueberries, washed

1. Preheat oven to 400° F. 2.
In a large bowl, mix together flour, oatmeal, sugar, salt, and baking powder.

In another bowl, break the egg and use a fork to beat it just a little bit. Then add the milk and vegetable oil, and mix.
Line a muffin tin with paper liners or lightly spray with nonstick spray. Fill each muffin cup about ½ of the way up.

In a food processor, pulse bread until fine crumbs form. Transfer to a medium bowl.
Add turkey, cheese, and onion. Season with salt and pepper, and mix gently just until combined.

Sushi Rolls
INGREDIENTS 1 cup sushi rice 1½ cups water 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar 6 sheets nori

DIRECTIONS
1. Place rice and water in a saucepan,
cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to a simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and leave for 10 minutes covered.
2. Spread rice into a container and allow
to cool, then sprinkle with combined vinegar and sugar. Stir thoroughly.

DIRECTIONS In large, heavy stockpot, brown Italian sausage, breaking up as you stir. Add onions and continue to cook, stirring occasionally until onions are softened. Add garlic, tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce and water. Add basil, parsley, salt, crushed red pepper, and black pepper. Simmer on low, stirring frequently for at least an hour. Cook spaghetti according to package directions.

Chunky Chili
INGREDIENTS 2 pounds lean ground beef 1
cup chopped yellow onion
1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper, to taste 1

2 tablespoon brown sugar 1

Brown ground beef and onion in large skillet. Drain off grease and add salt, pepper, and garlic powder and fry until beef is done. Transfer to stock pot or large kettle and add remaining ingredients. Cook over medium low heat for 30- 50 minutes or longer if desired.

Easy Made Tacos
INGREDIENTS 1 pound lean ground beef 1 cup chunky salsa 10

1 medium tomato, chopped 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Stir salsa into beef. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly; reduce heat to medium-low.

Cook beef in 10-inch skillet over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until brown; drain.

Caramel Apples
INGREDIENTS 1
cup butter

cups packed brown sugar

cup light corn syrup

can sweetened condensed

Insert 1 wooden stick into each apple. In a heavy saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and milk Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

thermometer reads 248° (firm ball stage) about 30-40 minutes and for a softer caramel cook just 240°

Set on generously buttered wax pa per to cool (make certain to gener ously butter the paper). Dip each apple into hot caramel mixture; turn to coat.

Fudge Brownies

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8 inch square pan or line with foil. In a medium bowl combine melted butter and cocoa and stir until cocoa is dissolved. Add sugar and mix well. Add eggs one at a time and stir until well combined. Stir in vanilla, flour and salt until you no longer see any flour. Spread in pan and bake for approximately 25 minutes. Cool completely before cutting into squares.

Sugar Ghost Cookies
INGREDIENTS 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened 2 cups granulated sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 batch Royal Icing (see below)

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until smooth. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Add flour, baking powder and salt; stir thoroughly. Preheat oven to 400°. Roll cookie dough out onto a floured surface. Roll dough until it is ¼ to ½-inch thick. With cookie cutter, cut dough into fun shapes.
Place cookies onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Keep cookies at least 1-inch apart.

Bake cookies 6 - 8 minutes.

With beaters or a standing mixer, whip the egg white and lemon juice until frothy. At medium speed, beat in the confectioners’ sugar.
6. Then beat on high until the mixture
is thick and glossy, about 3 mins. Royal icing will set to a firm, glossy finish when applied to a cookie.
