CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER Piraeus, Athens
LARGE SCALE CULTURAL PROJECT ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION STUDY 2011 ACADEMIC PROJECT Fellow Team Members: Asimina Paraskevopoulou
The main concept idea was to create a landscape building, filling the threedimensional space at the site with a structure that re-creates the topography of the Castella Hill, using as reference the contour lines that the hill would normally form at the site. During the study of the surrounding topographical profile in order to define the main conceptual lines, we recreated the contour lines that were cut by the vertical support walls that surround the site on the northern part, and reformed them in order to create the defining for the project vertical walls, adjusting them in the meantime in order to host efficiently the required functions and uses of the Arts Center. These walls both express the required landscape continuity, as well as create an interesting bi-pole comprising on the one hand of the vertical surface organization of the Arts Center and on the other one of the horizontal one of the adjacent Ioannis Liapis designed Piraeus Cultural Center.

ISTANBUL URBAN EXPERIMENT PROJECT URBAN DESIGN 2012 ACADEMIC PROJECT Fellow Team Members: Demetris Venizelos Konstantinos Sakellariou
This project is an urban experiment on the limits of reality
and utopia, located in the Karakoy district of central Istanbul.
What if vast superstructures were created in a historic area of the city center of a metropolis? How would a radical new spatial experience of the contemporary city coexist with the multiple historic layers of urban history? Is such a shock enough to bring back to life an area that has been inert malfuctioning and unableto sustain modern life? The project explores the potentian of a design strategy that creates a thickened ground* in a central metropolitan area, through the diversion and conjunction of uses and services on several city layers. Services and land uses are no more static notions. They are flows and strings that run under, within and over the urban fabric, creating a pattern of a three-dimensional masterplan instead of a classic two-dimensional one. The forms of such urban structures express the notions of flow, diversion and weaving.
The masterplan is conceived as an 3d weaved structure of land uses, embracing and flowing within the old medieval urban fabric achieving thus its revitalization. *thickened ground: an urban area that supports multiple, different and concurrent urban functions that take place simultaneously and conjuct to each other by weaving themselves with the urban fabric, thus increasing the complexity in the dynamics of the urban space.

SHIP RECONSTRUCTION
Supervisor Professor: Stavros Gyftopoulos Assistant Professor: Thomas Mazarakos
The island complex of the Aegean Sea has some very specific characteristics regarding its geographical and demographic distribution, and according to this these criteria, and the study of the demographic, transportation characteristics and the health units present on them, we create a working scenario of a number of such hospital ships which perform circular routes approaching certain groups of islands each, and offer medical, information, prolepsis and short term hospitalization services, and which are based on the main islands that contain General Hospitals. In this way we believe that the basic medical needs
principles on the scenario of remodelling a ro-pax ferry into a mobile primary health unit. We define the area of operation of this vessel as the island complex of the Aegean Sea, which in turn defines the design properties and functional requirements for the project.
of the island population are serviced and the operations of the islands’ hospital infrastructures are complemented while the more serious medical needs to are assigned to the nearest General Hospitals. The reason that we choose a primary health unit as the project for this thesis is because the limited spatial and functional requirements of such infrastructure enable us to use as the basis for the rebuilding a vessel of relatively compact dimensions, that enables it to approach and moor even in the most demanding harbors of the smallest and most remote islands.

260 m CRUISE FERRY WARM CLIMATE OVERNIGHT RO-PAX VESSEL PROJECT RENDERS
The aim of this project was to research upon the exterior design and morphological analogies and balances, and the uses and functions distribution of a mega cruise ferry designed for the transportation of a large number of cars, lorries and passengers in overnight ferry routes lasting no more than 48 hours. This is a route profile that would suit in consolidated ferry services found both in the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea. The volume target that was set was a gross tonnage of 70000, with maximum o.a. length of 260 meters and draft of 7.5 meters, dimensions that we regarded as the limits of the usual port infrastructures used by such type of vessels.
32
According to the available dimensions, we organised the garage spaces in 5 decks, with the lower ones, located under the main deck (deck 3) and fore of the machine room bulkheads, suitable for cars and spotting 2.7 m of free height, while they can be accessed by fixed ramps leading to the main deck. The two main garage decks of the vessel have both 5 meters of free height, enabling comfortable transportation of almost any type of road freight, and extending on the whole of the hull’s length. Access between these two decks is guaranteed by a folding ramp, while the same type of ramp gives access to the car garage that can be found on the fore part of deck 7. Regarding the public passenger spaces that host a number of lounge, dining, recreational and retail uses, they can be found on decks 7, 8 and 9, positioned above the garage decks but bellow the cabin ones. That arrangement enables immediate access to the garage decks below during embarkation and disembarkation, easy access to the life saving devices on deck 8 and placement of the muster stations close to them and increased privacy and low levels of noise on the cabin decks located on the upper decks. The cabins themselves are organised in the 4 higher decks, featuring both inside and outside cabins, placed on the sides of the superstructures and spotting ample surfaced round shaped windows that allow excellent views of the surrounding ocean.

The other significant area of study was the modeling of the hull form of such type of vessels, namely high speed displacement ro-paxes, capable of speeds up to 30 knots. The challenge here was to study existing hulls of ferries of the same speed capabilities, regarding both their geometry and hydrodynamic features, as well as the relationship between efficient and low drag hull design and maximization of garage space on the main deck, and produce an appropriate hull form, in accordance to the established laws of hydrodynamics and coefficients, in order to better understand the geometry and form of displacementtype hulls.

The Nuovo Leudo di Dio is the last remaining leudo navigating, with its base being Sestri Levante. She was constructed in 1925 by the skilled shipwright Antonio Muzio, for the transport of wine in barrels between Liguria, Elba and Sardinia. In 1972 it was restored into passenger use with its hold converted into guest quarters and the addition of two coachroofs, and in this configuration we found her dragged on her supports on the beach of Sestri Levante.
The leudo was a lateen rigged merchant sailing boat used until the early 20th century for trade predominantly between Liguria and Sardinia. The main goods transported were ligurian wine, sardinian cheese, slate, ceramics, salt and sand, while its compact size and particularly shallow draft served in order for it to be able to land on the beaches of Liguria to unload its cargo, owing to the shortage of proper ports in the Republic of Genoa.

BASED ON THE CIRQUE DU SOLEIL© AFT LOUNGE ON THE MSC MERAVIGLIA CLASS CRUISE SHIPS The UPSIDE DOWN cocktail and entertainment lounge project was inspired by the 2012 romantic fantasy film with the same title. Our target was to capture the ambient, the atmosphere, the colors, the mood and the spatial references of the film, and to find a conceptual interpretation of these factors suitable for the project of a multiuse public space on a cruise ship.

On the final solution, we selected to express the contrast of the two planets in the film as the contrast between the flowing, curvy forms and lines on the floor and the triangular, hard-edged ones on the ceiling, while the linear led illumination compliments both surfaces enhancing their respective character and intended expression. The columns found in the lounge are used both as references to the tower structure connecting the two worlds in the film, and as concave-shaped mirror-surfaced forms that create deformed and reversed reflections of the space, on the background of the plain dark blue walls that leave the column, roof, floor and furniture composition express the concept of the two contrasting environments, while the use of semitransparent polycarbonate at the low walls and furniture create the desired elevation and gravity-beating effect in the space.

Regarding the exterior design of the project, our target was to produce a modern, elegant, balanced and harmonious result taking into account both the inherent volume and dimension proportions of catamarans, namely the increased beam to length ratio, the need to produce attractive, luxurious and functional exterior and interior spaces as well as our own conceptual, aesthetic and design requests. Thus, the project is characterized on the exterior by the relationship between structure and glass surfaces, with the former’s generous area serving our request of maximum natural illumination on the inside, and the latter’s plastic and three-dimensional treatment adding a level of detail to the design ensemble. Furthermore, visible is the relationship between horizontal, vertical and angled lines that create a harmonious design result, with the circle pattern on the sides of the lower deck doubling both as an interesting design feature complementing the rest of the yacht as well as portholes for the crew cabins on that deck.
47
49m POWER CATAMARAN MAIN DECK INTERIOR STUDY
In the interior, our scope was to design comfortable, pleasant and functioning spaces, with contemporary, refreshing, calming and timeless design languages, with particular attention given to the use of natural and artificial lighting as design gesture. On the lower deck are featured the crew cabins, the four gensets aft and fore of the cabins for better weigh distribution and space utilization, mechanical spaces on the bows and the two garages on the sterns, featuring access to both the outside of the hulls as well as the space between them, enabling tender use while moored between other vessels.

On the main deck are found the services and the public spaces of the yacht. The former are positioned in a centrally positioned cluster enabling both optimal connection with the guest quarters of the yacht as well as the right vertical connection with the lower deck crew cabins and technical spaces and the guest cabins on the upper deck. The latter feature aft an integrated lounge and dining space that dominates the deck and becomes one of the defining aspects of the project, utilizing all the beam available, having continuous and high glazing on the sides that enable the space to be bathed in natural light and direct contact both with the surrounding outside open spaces of the yacht as well as optically with the ocean all around. In the center of this space is the main staircase going up to the Upper Deck, while fore there is a relax and fitness space featuring a sauna, a jacuzzi, a workout station and a photochromatic shower.
