In early September 2014, I became aware of GDAY through a special interview released by designer Neville Brody announcing a global contest in Graphic design. My participation was encouraged by his presence as chair of the jury and my memory of his book “The Graphic Language of Neville Brody”, his works and their significance and impact. That, along with the fact it was a Yamaha Corporation initiative, struck me as a most appealing challenge. The task was enormous: to create a graphic form of KANDO. The Japanese word Kando means “for the heart” or “to be deeply moved”. Kando is an important Japanese philosophy that Yamaha Music and Yamaha Motor Co. have always embraced. The graphic process presented here is a compilation of the research, studies and drawings for “YK”, my proposal. Of my 22 slide entry, “page 3” was selected for the final 15 shortlist and considered for open public voting and “Grand Prize” award. Full results in www.graphic-day.com. André Clemente, March 2015
